Meli is a popular ice cream parlor located in a central area of the old town, close to a water fountain. The shop offers an array of fresh goat's-milk ice cream with unique flavors such as ricotta and fig, yogurt and pomegranate, and a signature philo pastry flavor. Customers have praised the delightful mix of creamy vanilla, almond, honey, and 'Angels hair' in the traditional dish-based Kantaifi ice cream.
Delicious, freshly made loukoumades (Greek donuts). Definitely go here!
Silviya K — Google review
Picturesque little spot to sip cappuccino freddo and Greek cardamom coffee and enjoy the most wonderful hot and fresh loukoumades - Greek donuts with honey sauce.
M T — Google review
Lovely place for a coffee. We came here in February when all the shops and cafes are quiet. The latte we had was very nice. The lady serving was very friendly and this is a lovely welcoming cafe with nice tables and chairs and plenty of seating just inside and outside. Will definitely return.
Sue V — Google review
Its really tasty and has a nice location its also not expensive and has an adequate price. You lay 6€ for a big portion of Lokoumades (serving for two people)
Mia S — Google review
When I say this ice cream is a delight and food for the gods, when it contains Angels hair it really is! I chose the traditional dish based I ice-cream called Kantaifi which is creamy vanilla, almond, honey and Angels hair this is a delightful mix of crunchy and creamy and the angels hair is a bit like a really sweet shredded wheat without the taste of cardboard. The Ice cream Parlour is quite central in the old town right next to the water fountain. The service is cheerful and quick and the staff are really friendly, you can even have a taste of one of the 40 different flavours! There's even a few chairs to sit and relax outside, this was my second visit made better by the fact that the ice cream is made from goats milk so fabulous for those who have issues with milk. Would recommend any day of the week.
Helen F — Google review
I came to this restaurant and offered to buy anything, as my toddler son desperately needed to use the restroom. The unfriendly owner said no, didn’t realize I spoke Greek and proceeded to tell me to “Get out” in Greek. Do not recommend based on service alone. Plus not everything is homemade.
Elizabeth B — Google review
They offer a variety of desserts based on loukoumades. We tried the traditional version with honey and walnuts: fresh dough, quality honey (not always the case in places serving loukoumades), and just the right balance of everything. A great spot!
Markos D — Google review
Even though the loukoumades were supposedly freshly cooked most of them were very dry and very hard to chew. Of course we ate everything because it's loukoumades but they weren't too "fluffy" or something. Maybe it's the type

Restaurant
Bankery is a popular and trendy cafe-restaurant located in the bustling Rethymnon Center, attracting both locals and tourists. The restaurant features a fantastic bar where skilled bartenders serve high-quality coffee and craft excellent cocktails. It offers a diverse menu including crispy pastries, hearty breakfasts, and fast-food options freshly cooked daily. The energetic atmosphere makes it a fun place to grab coffee or chat with friends, although it can get quite loud due to its lively energy.
Delicious Eggs Benedict. Good coffee. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Atmosphere was cosy and welcoming. Looking forward to our next visit.
Harry V — Google review
A very nice and trendy cafe with impressive Christmas decor. The place offers good sweet and savoury pastries and pies. It is a good place for breakfast. Beware that the place is very popular and gets crowded, it is often hard to find a table. There can also be a lot of smoke and noise.
Agisilaos P — Google review
Really nice place to go and enjoy your brunch , nice atmosphere and most important of all very tasty food! The ingredients were fresh and our coffee good. Service was fast and the staff very polite. For sure I'll go again
Lizeta P — Google review
Bankery is a fun place to grab a coffee and sweet treat! It's decorated in a really fun way, and the waiters are also dressed with the theme. The place can get quite loud, so it's not the idea place to work (unless you love loud places), but it's fun to sit and enjoy a coffee or chat with friends. The energy is lively, so it's not a quiet coffee shop. Also, smoking is allowed indoors, which is very typical in Greece.
Erin H — Google review
What a fantastic meal. With a mostly attentive staff. About the only drawback is that the "inside" is really the inside and outside patio as one giant area that you can smoke cigarettes right beside a table in the non smoking area, that part sucked. However we will go back.
William B — Google review
My American family of four that included an 11 and 13 year old was craving a big breakfast. We had been hanging out in Old Town every day and hadn't seen anything that would fit the bill. Then we saw photos on Trip Advisor and decided to give The Bankery a try. No, it's not The Bakery. It's Bankery because it used to be a bank, and still has the huge vaulted door downstairs!) It took awhile to get noticed by the wait staff once seated, but then they were so nice and so attentive! The kids had a lovely plate of eggs and bacon, and my husband and I shared the Variety Breakfast Platter for two. It was fabulous! A ton of food with a great selection of Cretan favorites and traditional American/ British choices. It was way too much for two so the kids shared and we brought the rest back to our villa. In addition, I had been craving some "American" style drip or filtered coffee. Couldn't find it anywhere. Here at Bankery I finally found it. Even better, it came in a great big glass mug that I could add all the creamer I wanted. I cried with delight I was so happy. I even ordered a second, it was so good. The manager and wait staff were very friendly and just couldn't do enough for us. We appreciated the free refills of cold clean bottled water as it was a hot day outside. In addition, the setting and decor was really hip and happening with good music. It would be a nice trendy bar if it were in Chicago. Yet there were lots of children present. The only thing that deterred from our enjoyment was that our table was surrounded by heavy smokers, but A) that is the culture, B) as Americans we're just not exposed to that anymore so it takes getting used to, and C) we were seated outside so that helped to dissipate the smoke. Lastly, the bill was incredibly reasonable for all the freshly squeezed juices and food that was ordered. All in all we had a great visit and we are so glad we stopped here.
CJ E — Google review
Very cozy place with great food, coffee and drinks. Very polite staff and the appropriate place to study/work - since there is an abundant provision wall plugs and extremely fast internet.
Σπύρος Ζ — Google review
A good choice for coffee and breakfast for two. Good location, right in the heart of Rethymnos. Although the service is quite friendly, they allow smoking in the cafe, which is quite annoying for the non smoking customers!!!!!!!!

Mona Lisa, a long-standing establishment in Rethymno, is renowned for its local treats. Their sweet tarts and ice cream are made from fresh sheep's milk, offering a unique and authentic taste of the region. While their ice cream selection may not be extensive, the quality of their products is exceptional.
The most delicious kadaifi I have ever eaten. The baklava is also extremely delicious. I highly recommend it.
Виктория Д — Google review
Excellent gelato, I tried the lemon, and mango (more of a sorbet), both had great flavour and texture. Not many options compared to other gelato places nearby, but 1 of the best we tried in the town
Matt H — Google review
Don't be tempted with all the ice cream in the area. This is the best ice cream you will ever eat! Creamy, smooth, so tasty! Best ice cream ever. And the workers are soooo nice! No wonder it's still standing from 1950!
ליאת י — Google review
Never had the sheep milk ice cream before. It’s wonderful and creamy. Better than even cow’s milk. Had the parfait and chocolate. They also have a pasty shop. Go get some!
Robby A — Google review
The most typical and traditional confectionery of Rethymno (since 1950). You must try the galaktompoureko (Greek custard pie) which is probably the best you can get in the whole country. Not to be missed are the kantaifi, baklava and vieneza (a local speciality) sweets. Ice cream is also really delicious and is made of local sheep milk. The place is mainly to take away and there are a few tables. You must pass by this place if you are in Rethymno, it is a delicious time travel to Cretan confectionery.
Agisilaos P — Google review
This is a nice cake shop. I tried a few of their products.. all good. Especially love the mini tart with jams on top.. nomnomnom.. Chocolate cake was quite ok, it feels like dark chocolate digestives in a cake version. Lol The “galaktoboureko” (sth like that lol) was great! Friendly owner :))

Patisserie
The Cream Society, located at 53 Moatsou street, is a contemporary pastry shop founded by Lefteris Kokonas, a skilled pastry chef with experience from Athens King George Hotel. Emphasizing small batches for freshness, the shop offers popular treats like the smooth lemon tart and the blond chocolate and orange mousse. Influenced by traditional French methods learned during his pastry studies in France, Kokonas adds his own unique touch to classic desserts.
Service a bit confused, but very helpful. Place is located at the main road so sitting outside of the cafeteria is a bit loud. Not much space inside and very basic interior. But the main thing here is pastry and that is TOP! Absolutely stunning creations, greatly married flavours, a pure delight! Hands down best pastry shop in Rethymno. Tip: if you want to try more than one thing - they have mini versions of tarts and desserts - it’s worth taking it!
Fleur T — Google review
We visited this patisserie almost every day during our holiday and especially enjoyed the small ice cream and the cheesecake. Both were outstanding, and we can only highly recommend this place!

We called in for breakfast on our final day and wish we had found this wonderful little piece of heaven earlier. The restaurant has a lovely chilled atmosphere and is beautifully decorated. The staff are welcoming and friendly and make you feel at home, then the food ... What an absolute delight, the menu ranges from sweet to savoury and is beautifully presented and tastes delicious. I will absolutely be returning here when we come back in a few weeks. #update seriously impressed with the whole restaurant we have returned several times and each time it is consistently amazing. Well done

very good breakfast and brunch location, maybe the best! Owner sits next to us having freddo, not taking care! Service terrible, since years not enough people working here! 2 people serving, i guess 1 in the kitchen. Waiting time for food today 1 hour! 5 tables with people, rest empty

A nice place to have a lunch. I like the decoration. We had some sandwiches which were tasty and good sized, price was fair. The mojitos are good as well but in my opinion a little expensive. Unfortunately the service is really bad. Very unpolite and seems like in a bad mood. I felt like getting ignored multiple times. The waitress with the pink mask was nice tho. This gives my review 3 stars. Ambiente is nice but I couldn’t enjoy my stay 100% because of that service.
Niko M — Google review
This place is absolute heaven! We had breakfast there every single time because we were hooked after the first day. I ate french toast, eggs benedict, omelett and pancakes. Everything was absolutely delicious and looked amazing. I should have taken pictures of the other dishes. The girls working there are very friendly and courteous. This is definitely the number 1 breakfast place in Rethimno. The prices are more than fair considering the large portions and the high quality food. Look no further.

Cute instagrammable spot. I had the scrambled salmon, amazing. My boyfriend ordered the sweet mornings, and it was very disappointing. It looked like a 5 year old picked it out. A few pancakes, some cake slices thrown on the plate, two frozen donuts and two old mini crossiants. The drinks were good.

Today I stepped into a sweet paradise! Even though I asked for the girl’s name twice — the one who kindly helped me choose a treat — I still managed to forget it 🥲 Still, I want to thank her for the way she approaches her work and the atmosphere she created around her. She gave me a boost for the whole day! Outstanding person — if I had to put it in two words. Special thanks to the pastry chefs for crafting such exquisite art… I’ll be back — and next time, not alone, but with friends! P.s. I teg my favourite 🥰

Less then 2 hours ago I've bought few chocolate cakes, take away for our hotel room, from the first patisserie I came across in Rethymno, Skartsilakis Patisserie, after an exhausting excursion to Santorini. Before coming in my holiday to Crete I asked my Greek work colleagues if they normally do good chocolate cookies in Greece/Crete and they said not really but they told me they do a lot of other very good sort of food. I can say Skartsilakis Patisserie is a place which brings back the childhood emotions. The cookies bought from there were so delicious. We'll come back to this patisserie in our next visit to Rethymno to try other products too, as we have another few days left from our holiday in Crete. Sorry for not taken any pictures to post it!

2,40€ for take away cappuccino is too much! additionally price list wasn't visible to costumers according to regulations. taste and coffee quality are really low which tastes more like warm water with coffee flavour. preparation of an excellent coffee needs far more than a nicely decorated environment and a friendly face and smiling personnel. improve all these and I m convinced you will have one of the best coffee shops in the city and in a place everyone needs perfectly located in the heart of a busy street

Cafe
Méli is an ice cream bar situated in the heart of Rehtymno, offering a delightful selection of high-quality ice cream flavors. Visitors can opt to relax in the outdoor seating area while savoring their coffee and indulging in some delicious ice cream. Alternatively, they can grab a cone with various optional flavors and take a leisurely stroll around the city. The establishment also offers classic Greek cakes, although some patrons found them excessively sweet.
Good quality ice cream and lots of flavours to choose from. Welcoming environment and the service was excellent. I was impressed on how they handled a small accident we had on our table. Top!

I can really recommend their ice cream (delicious!), but their classic Greek cakes gave me diabetes. I did not expect my portokalopita (orange cake) to arrive on a plate dripping with glucose-fructose syrup, it was almost nauseatingly sweet (and to make matters worse the serving size was humongous, I found it taxing to finish it since I don't enjoy wasting food). My friend ordered a semolina cake, which also came completely soaked in the syrup, please beware of their Greek cakes unless you enjoy eating sugar by the spoonful.
Maciej T — Google review
This gelateria/café/sea-view spot is every bit as good as the internet says. Funny thing is, we almost walked right past it. From the outside, it looks like just another average street café. The long ice-cream counter doesn’t exactly shout for attention, and the sign — covered in vines and written in Greek — doesn’t help either. So don’t bother looking for “Meli” in big letters, you won’t see it. Inside, it’s buzzing but not chaotic. No lines for the ice cream, which is what we came for. And it didn’t disappoint: silky, rich texture, great variety of flavors, and scoops that are generous for €2.85. Service is friendly, quick, and no fuss. They offer the usual drinks, cakes (tempting, but we’d already stocked up on sweets elsewhere), and possibly food as well. The seating is actually quite nice — small armchairs that are comfy and a bit luxe-looking, with enough space between tables that you don’t feel crammed next to strangers. Add the sea view, and it’s a place you could linger longer than planned. According to the internet, the ice cream is made with goat’s milk. Can’t confirm, but the pistachio I had was outstanding either way. Creamy, nutty, and just right. Highly recommend.

My nose crinkled a bit when I first heard of this Goats Milk Ice cream, but I thought I ought to give it a try as it comes highly recommended. First of all, I could not detect any ‘goatyness’ at all, the ice cream was really creamy and smooth in texture. The menu is extensive, and it was hard to choose. We settled for a Chocolate Orange ice cream, and it was Da Bomb!! Chocolate ice cream with a few candied orange pieces in it, drizzled with a smooth delish orange sauce, as well as chocolate sauce. Topped with whip cream and chopped almonds. It was decadent and flavorful!! It was busy, but service was still pretty quick and prompt.
Kajsa M — Google review
The ice cream here is definitely some of the best I’ve had! The ice cream is made from goats milk which is great as I have a slight intolerance to cows milk 🥰 I didn’t react to this at all! Super happy

A highlight of any holiday in Rethymno. We first visited last year on the recommendation of our driver who picked us up at Chania Airport - we weren't disappointed! The best ice cream, gelato, patisserie and coffee. My favorite being the incredible fruit salad. Lovely friendly staff in relaxing surroundings. Perfect 💕
Kathryn A — Google review
Lovely place to stop for just a drink and or a snack. Sensible prices compared to UK, staff were very friendly and attentive. Lovely house white wine @ just €4 a glass, with a side dish of nuts included.
Steve A — Google review
We tried many desserts here. Simply the best place for a coffee if you enjoy sweets like me. From ice cream to incredible cakes, you can find whatever you can imagine. I had an strawberry cake with bitter chocolate that it was so good I had to take another one to go. Really give it a try if you are in Rethymno.

Pastry shop
Niktari's Bakery is a beloved spot in Rethymnon, known for its delectable pastries and great coffee. Visitors often make it a point to stop by when exploring the old town, enjoying their crusty breadsticks and divine koulouria, which resemble bagels. The bakery also offers fresh orange juice at reasonable prices. Despite getting busy during the day, the friendly staff and flavorful, well-made treats make it worth the wait.
In the morning we picked up some coffee and fresh orange juice here before we went to the beach. Of course together with some nice bakery. Prices good and people are friendly.

We stumbled upon this bakery by chance and were absolutely blown away. The staff is friendly, welcoming, and they speak English. Hufe variety of pastry and beautiful sweets. We tried the Ferrero and the dubai chocolate style dessert , and both were mind blowingly good. They tasted even better than they looked, and they looked fantastic!

Bleona is super nice and she helped us discover a lot of amazing Cretean treats, very happy with the zaffrane, chocolate orange, handmade praline of hazelnuts and crunchy peanut butter. Fairly priced and friendly atmosphere :)

Fabulous shop. Wonderful atmosphere with such an exciting array of interesting goods on offer. Lots of hers doctors and natural produce in addition to many delicious high quality treats. Bought an assortment of nuts and sweets there including amaxing pistachio balls for my husband's to take to chemo. Really wish we'd bought a whole lot more now as they've run out and are very missed. Fabulously helpful staff in a beautiful shop. I could spend hours there

If you're on the hunt for delightful treats, look no further than Kanakakis Patisserie. This charming spot is renowned for its scrumptious offerings, including soft and crunchy loukoumades—Greek-style donuts that are perfectly syrup-soaked and utterly irresistible. The patisserie also excels in crafting custom cakes with impressive speed and precision, thanks to their friendly staff who go above and beyond to ensure customer satisfaction.
Best quality traditional sweets in town!
Venetia K — Google review
Follow up: Go on a Sunday morning, when the dough balls are coming out fresh. They are divine. Do not miss. Order them with cinnamon, honey, and sesame seeds or nuts. This family run store has been in exists for decades. They built their reputation on a Greek treat ‘Loucomades’. I have eaten them for 40 years and today was the first time I’ve ever been dissatisfied. The fried dough balls were cake like rather than light and crispy and were covered in honey, sesame, and cinnamon. Maybe someone lost the family recipe??? I hope they were just having a bad day. Ask for fresh fried. The cafe Freddo I had was reallly good, but almost 4 euros. A bit on the pricy side of gourmet coffee in Rethymno
