The Acropolis of Athens is an iconic 5th-century B.C. temple complex located on a rocky hilltop in Athens, currently undergoing restoration. Visitors can explore this historic site by purchasing a Special Ticket Package that includes access to other nearby attractions like the Ancient Agora, Temple of Hephaestus, and Hadrian's Library. Additionally, tourists can enjoy stunning views of the Acropolis from retro-chic design hotels situated near the Parthenon's east gate and the Acropolis Museum.
A couple of things to know before you go: 1. A long walk to the top but not as bad as expected. A considerable amount of stairs, but enjoyable. The granite at the top is very slippery—watch out. 2. Very limited bathrooms. There are no restrooms at the top. The ones at the bottom are insufficient for the amount of people. 3. We went at 5 PM to avoid the heat. It was pleasant at the top with a good breeze. I’d recommend the later time slots as the low sun makes for better pictures. 4. I bought my tickets the day before. The earlier time slots were sold out. It seemed that people were buying tickets onsite, so you don’t necessarily need a reservation. A must-go while in Athens. Better than expected.

Visiting the Acropolis was honestly one of the highlights of my trip to Athens. No matter how many pictures you’ve seen, nothing really prepares you for standing up there in person. The view over the city is incredible — you can see the whole of Athens stretching out below, with the sea glimmering in the distance. I went early in the morning to avoid the heat and crowds, and that was definitely the right move. Climbing up is not too hard, but wear comfy shoes and bring water — the stones can be slippery. Once you reach the top, the Parthenon and the other ancient temples feel almost unreal. You can actually feel the history around you, it’s crazy to think how long these structures have been standing. The atmosphere is peaceful, especially if you take a moment to just sit and look around. The Acropolis Museum nearby is also worth a visit — it’s modern, cool, and helps you understand what you’re seeing up there. Overall, it’s an absolute must-see in Athens. Go early, take your time, and enjoy the view — it’s one of those experiences that truly stays with you. 🇬🇷✨

What can I say? One of the most iconic archaeological sites in the entire world. An absolute must visit, come early at 8am either with a guided tour or with pre book tickets because it gets very busy as you'd expect. We visited in late October,it was 24c which was perfect weather. Our visit was with a guide from Viator. I will visit again just so I can explore the slopes which we didn't have the chance too.
Phil W — Google review
You know the feeling when you feel that you are in a special place, where something important for the human race happened there, that's the feeling here! A place that I saw so many times in the books, finally in front of me. Different kind of emotion, amazed by what people could build with such different instruments from the one we have now with the progress of the technology.
Ossama — Google review
The entrance fee is €30, and you can buy tickets online (highly recommended to avoid queues). It’s best to visit early in the morning to avoid the crowds. I bought my ticket for 11 a.m. because earlier slots were sold out, and walking around while constantly dodging people wasn’t the best experience. Still, the place is absolutely incredible — no matter how many photos you’ve seen before, it never stops amazing you. Definitely worth the visit.
Eva P — Google review
A phenomenal experience that you simply have to live through. We had tickets in advance online, and at the entrance we waited about 5 minutes. There was a crowd, but it was still pleasant. Bring water—the walk is naturally tiring and steep, and at the top the sun really beats. Enjoy the view of the vast city of Athens from above, as well as the history and the remains that are indescribable to see, knowing that someone lived there so long ago, and just like this. Fascinating! Remains from the earliest settlements, as well as from the later sanctuary, offer countless things to see and enjoy.
Marija K — Google review
How do you rate this any less than five stars? So much history and beauty in one place. I have mobility issues and thank goodness the elevator was working!! Scary ride up, but so worth it!! The entire time we were there, we felt speechless! Absolutely awe inspiring!!
Andre D — Google review
I couldn't believe it but this place is over 2500 years old and it's still standing. The idea that it was built on this tall hill made it even more awesome. The history was interesting too. I learned the Athenians were welcomed inside whenever enemies were approaching. We had an excellent tour leader, too.

The Parthenon, a restored ancient temple with iconic Doric columns dating back to 447 BC, is a must-see landmark on the archaeological site in Athens. Visitors can explore major historical and archaeological sites such as the Acropolis, the renowned museum, and other significant cultural museums like the Benaki Museum of Islamic Art and the Museum of Cycladic Art. In addition to historical sites, Athens offers vibrant neighborhoods and pedestrian streets for visitors to explore.
I came on a weekday, but it was still crowded because it was the end of the travel season,The view overlooking the city of Athens, a magnificent structure, was magical. Although there was nothing exciting, I was glad to have seen it with my own eyes. The birthplace of civilization, the oldest city, the once prosperous and powerful city in the world.
Paula S — Google review
A must see if visiting Athens. Its uneven surfaces for parts of it so walking boots are recommended. The Parthenon is very impressive and the View of Athens from the tip shows how big Athens is. Worth getting a guided tour to learn the history of the site.
John M — Google review
We've been there at the end of October, which is is probably the best time of the year. Weather is usually still sunny, while at the same time its not too hot. And the Acropolis is not overcrowded even tho you will meet lots of ppl. Keep in mind this is one of the worlds most visited must-see hotspots. You have to book a time slot in advance when you buy the tickets. If your kids are EU citizens and under 18y old, they do not have to pay the current 30 EUR entrance fee! They get free entrance, but passports/IDs are required to proof your citizenship. You can not book these free kids tickets in advance online. So you will have to line up at the two ticket offices. Once at the office you usually wont get instant access. So plan for another 2-3 hours waiting time ahead. We went to the acropolis museum (extra 20 € pp, kids free). Try to visit the museum before you actually visit the Acropolis as you will learn a lot. Once you are on the top you will understand why this place is so special. View is spectecular and you will notice how massive the buildings must have been. Enjoy!

Absolutely stunning!!! You have to pay to get up there, but it is worth it. Incredible views of Athens and observing the scale of these structures blew my mind.

The Parthenon at the Acropolis completed our Athens trip!!! Amazingly beautiful with breathtaking views of the city. The walk up to the top is a bit tiring but it you have a disability card they will let you use the elevator at the North entrance. It’s worth the visit!

The Acropolis/Parthenon experience was nice. The climb up wasn’t so bad (just kind slippery floors and wear shoes with good grip). We bought tickets a day prior for the 6pm slot and were allowed in at 5.45pm. The good: Overall a pretty place. As a history buff, it was a special experience to be standing at a place where so much history was made. Got some nice photos of the structures against the evening sun. There were shaded spots here and there for some respite from the sun. The bad: The €30 ticket price. It isn’t justified given that there are a lot of works actively being done inside. There were a lot of scaffolding and machinery around. The structures were also cordoned off. You just feel like a visitor going through the area and snapping pictures instead of feeling like you’re really experiencing what it must have been like to be up at the Acropolis back then. Some may be okay with this, but I just feel a €20 ticket would make more sense.
Salman S — Google review
Magnificent Greek architecture! The uphill walk with marble stairs was worth it. It’s best to arrive before opening time to avoid the crowds. We were in awe of the ruins, and the view of Athens was incredible.
Kim K — Google review
Simply amazing! As impressive as a wonder of the world. Climbing those marble stairs really makes you understand the grandiosity of this civilization. To add the cherry on top, finally there are no scaffoldings. I would recommend going at the last entry time for the golden hour experience. I also recommend climbing any of the neighboring hills to see the Acropolis from an incredible perspective.

The Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a restored stone theater constructed in 161 CE, hosts concerts and performances. It is historically significant as the site of the first recorded victory in theatrical competitions by Thespis in 534 BC. Thespis, a renowned performer of ancient Greece, is credited with being the first actor to play his own character on stage rather than relying solely on the choir for storytelling.
Iconic amphitheater makes for a stunning venue. If you’re in Athens as a tourist book tickets to whatever is on here during your stay and go, you won’t regret it. Be wary of the steep steps to get to the seats, take your time and be careful. Sitting here amongst the crowd is a wonderful experience.

If you can spare just one night in Athens, make sure you visit this magnificent Roman-era auditorium. Be wise and chose a concert or theater and you'll never forget the experience of watching world class artists under the starry Athens sky, below the Acropolis and the Parthenon. Highly recommended.

A Timeless Venue in the Heart of Athens This remarkable site stands as one of Athens' most iconic and culturally significant landmarks. Whether attending a concert, theatrical performance, or ceremonial event, visitors are immersed in an atmosphere that blends history with grandeur. Every occasion held here is elevated by the venue’s architectural beauty and profound heritage. A visit is not only recommended—it’s essential for anyone seeking to experience the soul of Athens with the reverence it so richly deserves.

The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is absolutely amazing. It’s incredible to stand in a place where performances and music events have been held for centuries. The atmosphere is breathtaking, and imagining the ancient concerts and plays that once took place here makes it even more special. A truly unforgettable part of visiting Athens!

Watching a show at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, just beneath the Acropolis, is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. My husband and I were lucky to attend the final performance in October 2025—a classical concert featuring ballet and opera pieces. We enjoyed every single moment. Thank you, Athens! 🩰🎭🏛️🎻
Huda S — Google review
The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is one of Athens’ most breathtaking landmarks: a place where history, art, and atmosphere blend perfectly. Nestled on the slopes of the Acropolis, this ancient stone theatre is stunning both by day and even more magical at night during a live performance. The acoustics are incredible & every note and word carries naturally, even to the highest seats. If you’re visiting Athens during the summer, definitely check the Athens & Epidaurus Festival schedule as attending a concert here is an unforgettable experience. Be sure to arrive early, as the steps can be steep and seating is on marble. Be sure to wear shoes that do not damage the stones, so heels and platforms are not allowed. Smoking and drinking is also prohibited (water is ok though). A truly unique place where you can feel the echoes of ancient Greece meeting modern culture.
Serpents C — Google review
We saw a tribute to Maria Callas here in 2021 and it was magical. A full moon above the Parthenon with beautiful music in an ancient marble theater. It was a once in a lifetime experience.
Cynthia J — Google review
A beautiful place and only when you stand there in person do you understand how huge it is. The idea that theatrical performances took place in this place several thousand years ago and how many people could fit there at once is incredibly fascinating.

The Ancient Agora of Athens is a significant historical site located northwest of the Acropolis. It served as a meeting place for the city council and local residents, playing a pivotal role in the early days of democracy. The Stoa of Attalos, an impressive marble structure built in 159 BC, stands as a testament to its rich history. This large square was not only an administrative and political center but also a hub for cultural and commercial activities dating back to the 6th century BC.
This is a fabulous place to visit in Athens. It is moderately priced and quite extensive. The buildings are well preserved and the museum is quite interesting with beautiful pottery and other artifacts. On the balcony of the museum are interesting busts and below are detailed sculptures. To see the entire enclosure plan for 1-2 hours. There are steps to navigate. Bring water, although there are vending machines near the church. I highly recommend a visit.
Rodger H — Google review
The park is big enough that even with a few groups of people milling about, it felt like my wife and I were on our own. 100% would recommend. If you find a good bench, you can enjoy the peace and quiet. While enjoying the beautiful views of the acropolis. The archeological sites is beautiful as well. The museum is included in the ticket and is a short walk through. The Temple of Hephaistos is my highlight for sure! Watch out for the wildlife👀
Zach K — Google review
We visited the Ancient Agora on the first Sunday of November, so entry was free! I’d recommend using the audio guide to truly appreciate the rich history behind the ruins. The site offers amazing photo points of the Acropolis and is just a short walk from Thissio station — the main entrance is on that side. Don’t miss the Temple of Hephaestus and the Stoa of Attalos museum inside. Wear comfy shoes and carry water, as there’s quite a bit of walking. We even spotted several turtles roaming around the site — our kids had so much fun watching them! There are lovely cafés and the Athinaion Park just outside, perfect for a relaxing break after exploring. A peaceful, family-friendly place where you can really feel the ancient spirit of Athens. Definitely worth spending half a day or more here!
Parul A — Google review
This was a great experience! The whole territory, not just the temple. You can refill you water bottle, use bathrooms - for me it's always important that a site has well maintained facilties. And not so many people. Since we couldn't get into the Acropolis top (because of the ticketing system and unavailability to buy tickets on site), this place was actually even better at the end. And with the great views. Just a small note - the church on site is closed.
Nate W — Google review
First and foremost, make sure you know where to enter from especially if you are buying your tickets online and you have that 1 hour window to enter the site. Tip: The entry isn’t near Monastiraki Square. Do buy tickets online on the Hellenic Heritage Tickets website to avoid entry queues. The ancient Agora itself is in unrecognisable ruins so it’s good to get a look at the marble tablet guide that’s on the way down from the Temple of Hephaestus. The museum has a lot of articles and information that was really helpful to understand the Agora and life back then.
Gita — Google review
Well worth a visit. It houses the only intact preserved ancient temple- the Temple of Hephaestus. There is also a well maintained, modern museum with interesting displays and insightful information. It is a great way to soak up some of Ancient Greece without the crowds you get at the Parthenon. The reason I only gave it 4-stars is I felt the entrance fee of €20 per person was a bit steep.
Deb B — Google review
We absolutely adored our visit to the Ancient Agora. There was plenty of space to roam around (without feeling crowded by tourists) and the Temple of Hephaestus was just stunning. We were especially in awe when we could glimpse the sun peeking through a hole in the ceiling structure — magnificent! In addition, there is a museum on-site (included). We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Ancient Agora of Athens!
Serena J — Google review
One of the most amazing sights I have ever been to, it’s what you expect from an ancient site, ruins, sand and dust. BUT there is much more to this sight OMFG, firstly the people working there are amazing, there knowledge of the site wow, then there are the diggers/archeologists keep doing what your doing the world needs this site. Now about the site the Temple of Hephaestus is amazing so preserved wow, the Ancient Agora (markets) show how the Ancient Athenians lived beautiful, the church of the Holy Apostles and to be able to stand where Socrates once stood or sat was a thrill. It’s amazing how the Greeks have kept up with the world socially without loosing the identity and this site is a prime example. A real must wish there was more stars

Greek restaurant
Kuzina is a modern Greek kitchen located on Adrianou Street in Monastaraki, offering stunning views from its terrace. The restaurant has been recognized by the BBC as one of the world's top 10 restaurants with a view. It serves creative Mediterranean dishes such as feta cheese mousse dumplings, handmade striftaria pasta, and lemon mousse. The restaurant also features a private dining room for special events and is led by renowned chef Aris Tsanaklidis.
Kuzina in Athens is an absolutely outstanding Michelin-recommended restaurant that offers an exceptional dining experience overall. The food was truly remarkable—I was particularly amazed by the lamb. I usually don’t enjoy lamb due to its distinct gamy taste, but Kuzina’s version was perfectly prepared with no trace of unpleasant odor. It was incredibly delicious! The starters were also impressive—the fish and octopus were both exquisite. The octopus was cooked to perfection—tender yet firm, not too tough nor too soft. The restaurant’s terrace boasts a truly unique and breathtaking view directly facing the Acropolis. It’s a spectacular sight that adds a magical touch to the dining experience. However, securing a reservation can be quite challenging as the place is fully booked almost every day. I highly recommend making a reservation well in advance if you plan to visit.( 7pm is the best you can see the day light also the sunset ) Service at Kuzina was also excellent—attentive, professional, and welcoming. That said, the only downside was the cleanliness of the wine glasses and water cups. Many had visible lipstick or lip balm stains, likely due to issues with the dishwasher. The ice bucket also appeared less than clean. This is an area that could definitely use improvement. Despite this, if you’re looking for a perfect evening with incredible food under the shadow of the Acropolis, I highly recommend Kuzina!
C V — Google review
We chose this restaurant because it is Michelin recommended and has a view of the Acropolis, so we were quite excited. For starters, we ordered the marinated octopus and the fresh blue crab salad. For mains, we had the spicy tuna, chicken, and twelve hour braised pork. Both starters were delicious, especially the blue crab salad. It had an Asian-inspired flavour, the crab meat was generous, and the seasoning was just right — not too heavy, which made it a perfect appetizer. The octopus was also very tasty and not chewy at all. Among the three mains, the chicken was the best. It was tender and the potatoes served with it were cooked in olive oil and very flavourful. The spicy tuna was really spicy, which is rare in Western cuisine, so if you enjoy spicy food you will love it. The weakest dish was the braised pork — it tasted like meat that had been boiled for soup, not appetizing at all. The best part of the experience was definitely the view. We had a corner table with a direct view of the Acropolis, which was a lovely surprise. It was a great spot for photos too.

Had a very good dinner on the rooftop with spectacular views. The staff was overwhelmed by a large dinner party that was near us that affected their level of service it seemed, but we were in no rush. It is pricier than other places in Athens. Still with the views and atmosphere and some pretty good food, this place is worth it for a special meal. Book ahead if you want optimal terrace seating with views.
Christine T — Google review
Highly recommend the rooftop as a must do! The best view from the roof terrace of the acropolis, temple of Hephaestus and the ancient agora. Book in advance! We enjoyed the Greek salad, feta cheese dumplings, black cod and pork tenderloin. The service is wonderful.
Terri C — Google review
The food was splendid. It is a modern Greek restaurant. It seems to be modern takes on traditional Greek food. Their Greek Salad has crumbled feta, not a block of feta in the more traditional style. The salad contained croutons that I think were from a rye olive bread, they were lovely on their own and a load from an artisan bakery in the UK would probably cost £10. I had the olive fed chicken which was lovely with a lovely crisp Greek white wine. I had proper Greek Coffee. I am travelling alone and ultimately I found what I really wanted 2 doors down, informality, live music, beer and dolmades.
Richard M — Google review
We got seating at a table up on the rooftop with a nice view of the Acropolis. Appetizers and meals were all freshly prepared and delicious. Prices are very reasonable. This place was recommended by our driver and it certainly did not disappoint.

Kuzina is definitely worth all the money!! We were 5 of us and we were celebrating the 40th anniversary of our parents. Our parents wanted a dinner with a view and everyone had recommended Kuzina. The view, stunning. The atmosphere, calm. The food, UNREAL!! We had a great spread from the appetizers to the main course. For our apps, we had the Blue Crab Salad, Greek Salad, Sea Bass and one more dish that I can’t seem to remember the name but it was cheese balls. For our mains, we had the Tenderloin of Lamb, Spicy Tuna and Pork. Everything is delicious and our server was a delight. When we come back to Greece, we will definitely come back to Kuzina!

Second visit to Athens and The Hills—once again, they blew me away! First came here three years ago with my son after the Acropolis. This time, back with the whole family for our 25th anniversary, and it was the standout experience of our trip. Very lovely relaxed dining experience and had a table looking out over the acropolis. We were here for 3.5 hours, having and 3 course meal and drinks. No pressure from waiting staff. Geros Tou Moria Restaurant is a hidden gem that has been serving authentic Greek cuisine since 1927. This family-owned establishment offers a warm and cozy atmosphere, making it a beloved spot for both locals and travelers. The menu features traditional dishes made with fresh, local ingredients, and the friendly staff are always ready to guide you through their offerings.
Spontaneously ended up at this mini rooftop. If you’re looking for a place to sip on a cocktail after you tour the acropolis this is the place. I had the Paloma which was very refreshing after trekking up the hill to the pantheon! I really enjoyed the beautiful colors and scenery of all the little cafes. It’s one of the most picturesque areas of Athens!

Amazing atmosphere with great food and excellent service. Beautiful setting with live music on the weekend and traditional dancers. Excellent drinks and reasonable prices. The baklava is delicious, and the orangepie is rich and tasty. A great place to spend an evening.

Went here as an impromptu dinner spot after a lovely welcome from the waiters and were not at all disappointed. The orange juice was fresh and I tried the tomatoes with stuffed rice for the first time - these were cooked so well and full of flavour. The seating was nice outside with some lovely live music as well!
Krita S — Google review
Cozy rooftop with gorgeous view. Sit on the rail by the inside restaurant to hear the live Greek music and see the traditional dancing. The grilled octopus was perfect, and local wine was a great recommendation. They have many tables linking the steps up the hill which is a fun experience to try on our next visit. The tzatziki was excellent and we put it on everything. Great date night spot and worth the drive from Athens to Plaka. Reservations recommended!

I had an awkward experience here. I am a half black half white American, and I’m not sure what exactly it was, but the staff treated me very strangely especially when it was time to pay. It was as if they didn’t think I was going to, because they were hawk eyeing my every move it seemed. Also, some of the patrons would point and murmur and it just felt very uncomfortable. At this point I have been to quite a few bars and restaurants and have never felt like this, and I don’t exactly know what it was about me that made everyone behave so strangely here. On a side note, the life music and the vibe was very nice and interesting, so as a local or someone who looks like a local, you’d likely have a better experience. I wanted to like this place but there were just too many moments where I felt like a zoo animal that I just can’t recommend for others who look like me. The lamb chops were okay but very chewy and not quite as good as other places nearby. Good luck!

Were greeted so warmly by the host and waiters. Great food, everything was delicious. Quick and gracious service. Lovely musicians and dancing entertainment. Highly recommend.

We lived our dinner at geros Tou Moria. Food was best and entertainment was so fun. Loved the dancers and the music. Nicolas our server suggested food selections from menu. He made our night unforgettable. Our only regret is that it was our first night and we had been up for 48 hours straight so we couldn’t make it through to the end of the show.

Bakery
Takis Bakery is a family-owned establishment located in the picturesque Koukaki neighborhood, near the Acropolis. Originally starting as a small shop selling koulouria Thessalonikis (Greek sesame bread rings), it has since evolved into a full-fledged bakery. The bakery offers an array of over 30 different types of bread and pastries, including the popular Thessaloniki-style koulouri and various baklava options such as pistachio baklava.
Wow. Delicious bread and home baked food and cake. 100% recommend the spinach pasties. Great tasty treat to keep you going for 2.50 euros. Always a queue. Think it's shut on a sunday

One of a few sourdough bakeries to find in Athens. An old-school style store, it doesn't look fancy or luxury like bakeries around Syntagma, but for sure you have a nice experience. I always have sugar surge and dried throat with typical bread, that's why it's worth a long way to come here and try their products. The price may be a bit higher than others, but compared to its quality, don't bother.
Wendy N — Google review
WHAT A PHENOMENAL SPOT! Everything we had was so fresh and the service was very attentive. The price was also very good for everything we got. No space to eat, so it’s more a take-away type of situation with this bakery.
Jean-Nicolas G — Google review
In my opinion it’s the best bakery in Athens. The workers are all very friendly , their food is very delicious and fresh made, very good price and gave us the best highlight of our visit to Athens
Mina B — Google review
The range of products is staggering, breads, sandwiches, rolls, pies, tarts, croissants, cookies, sweet or savory, you name it. We couldn’t possibly try everything but surely they all look delish. The zucchini tart, sesame raisin roll and pistachio cranberry dingy were inhaled and down the hatch instantly. This place is wildly popular. The small corner store has a lot of charms and personalities with whimsical wall hangings. Always ppl queuing up. I wished I had more time to sample everything.

Delicious croissants! (The tea in the photo is not from there) If you want to eat it right away, there are little wooden standing counters just outside. Definitely will go back.

This place was a gem!! The owners are so incredibly kind - my husband and I were looking for a certain pastry and they went out of their way to check on the baking time and even told us to take our other items (without even paying) and walk around then come back and pay for everything when the pastry was done baking. Genuine kindness, a cute atmosphere, and FRESH high quality goods. Definitely recommend giving them a visit :)

The most wonderful bakery. I ate here every morning of my trip with my girlfriend. Their breakfast pies are the best I have ever had and their traditional pastries are some of the best flavors I have ever had. I have travelled all through Europe in my life eating the incredible cuisine and this could be the best bakery anywhere! The people are so kind, I wish I could bring them home with me!

History Museums
The Acropolis Museum, a modern glass and steel structure, has been open to the public since 2009. Its design allows for stunning views of the Parthenon from almost every corner. The museum showcases artifacts unearthed around the citadel, offering insight into the culture and daily life of ancient Greek civilizations. While there is debate about whether certain exhibits should be returned to Greece, visitors can appreciate beautifully crafted copies in place of the originals.
A truly spectacular museum that is packed full of highly beautiful and interesting artefacts. It was informative, spacious and well-thought out. You can easily spend a few hours exploring. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Athens, and I would highly recommend a visit. Pre booking your tickets online means you can head straight to the turnstiles at your allocated time - which is well worth doing.
Joel P — Google review
A great stop if you are exploring Athens. The building is modern with huge windows and a clear view of the Acropolis itself. Inside, you will find ancient sculptures, pottery, and a cool glass floor that shows ruins underneath. The top floor has the Parthenon pieces laid out like they were originally placed at scale, and the cafe has a solid view. Easy to enjoy even if you are not a history buff.
Rashaad — Google review
We were initially unsure whether to visit the Acropolis Museum, as some reviews claimed it wasn’t worth it. However, we decided to go anyway — and we’re really glad we did. The entrance fee was €20 (current price as of autumn 2025). We went around 6 PM and it was almost empty, with no lines at all. The museum was open until 8 PM, so we had plenty of time to walk around and explore. The museum itself is beautiful. It features an impressive collection of artifacts found on the slopes of the Acropolis, as well as everyday objects from different periods of Athenian history. There are also many statues, architectural fragments from temples, and other fascinating pieces. On top of that, the museum offers lovely views of the Acropolis and the surrounding area. We later found out that there is an audio guide available — just look for the QR code inside the museum. We wish we had noticed it earlier! Overall, it’s definitely worth a visit. We had a great experience.
Darya D — Google review
One of my favorite museum experiences worldwide! Bernard Tschumi’s masterpiece covers Athens historical layers by physically reconstructing them through five different levels. The context and the place in the city are omnipresent and shine through the building. The museum is generously laid out and there’s hardly any waiting times. The flows through the exhibits work smoothly and although there are huge numbers of visitors there is never any feeling of crowding. Full points for this jewel!
Andreas L — Google review
Be prepared to be amazed by history where myth and reality are hard to distinguish. Modern, spacious, with a lot of light, this is a big museum, be prepared to spend ~4h if you wanna see everything. I advise people to bring headphones to listen to the audio they offer. Be careful, any backpacks have to be stored in a locker room. And check their cafe, it has a wonderful view! Their shop has a variety of books in several languages.
Sandra R — Google review
A very well-thought-out and well-organized museum with beautiful unique exhibits. It uses modern technology in a great way to bring the glory and power of ancient Greece to life. The museum also has a nice café with good service and a view of the Acropolis — not the very best view, as you can see from the photos, but still lovely. Definitely worth a visit!
Az R — Google review
It's incredible to visually learn about the history of the place and the people - the ART!!! The museum is beautiful and in the evening hours it's lit up and you can see the Acropolis and Parthenon on the hill out the windows and from the large outdoor patio. I spent three hours (with the free audio guide)!

Philopappos Hill, also known as the Hill of the Muses, is a small peak located opposite the Acropolis in Athens. It is connected to surrounding hills and features a network of paths for hikers to explore. The hill serves as a green oasis in the heart of Athens and boasts significant archaeological finds. Additionally, it is home to the Acropolis-Philopappos Project by architect Dimitris Pikionis, recognized as a monument of world architectural heritage.
One of the best hills in Athens to see all the city around. Especially early morning, fantastic view and quiet place to meditate. I think Plato and Socrates were here many times. You should see it.
Devran S — Google review
It’s a beautiful area to walk through, with a forest-like setting and stunning views over Athens. However, I wouldn’t recommend visiting in the morning during summer months like August—it was extremely hot, almost empty, and the walk involves many hills. There’s only one small kiosk at the entrance for snacks, so come prepared.
Eman M — Google review
One of the best spots to see the Acropolis view. You’ll need to walk a bit, but the path is filled with street performers and beautiful scenery. You might even spot some turtles having a family argument on the mountain trail. Also, Socrates’ prison is along the way and definitely worth a stop. The uphill walk can be tiring, so good shoes are a must
Sertaç G — Google review
Some of the best views in Athens are from this hill and even better, it's very easy to walk up. I highly recommend going around sunset time, a sunset from this hill is splendid. Take your time here, walk around the grounds, visit the prison of Socrates.
James C — Google review
Walking through Philopappos Hill felt like stepping into ancient nobility. The peaceful paths, olive trees, and marble ruins made me feel as if I were one of the Athenian aristocrats from centuries ago. From the top, the view of the Acropolis and the city is breathtaking — quiet, timeless, and full of grace.
RJ — Google review
Athens is a walking city and taking a walk/hike up this hill is worth it! It was lovely to experience being on the hill top towards sunset! Great views and a nice place to just relax for a little. Several different trails to take and easy to walk, but rocky on top, so watch your step!
Lisa K — Google review
It was a delightful hike and we got to see all of Athens the same way that I would if we had gone to the Parthenon, so it was very rewarding since we couldn’t go to the former. It’s free to access and beautiful to admire. I just wish they had toilets other than the chemical ones back down at the entrance or something.
Nicole K — Google review
Amazing views of the entire city, and entirely free to access which was amazing! I recommend checking this place out if you want amazing views of the acropolis complex without having to pay for entry. We only cared about seeing it from afar and seeing the entire city so this was perfect!

The Temple of Olympian Zeus, a vast ancient temple dedicated to Zeus, was built in the 6th century B.C. on the site of an outdoor sanctuary. Located near the Acropolis, the area is surrounded by olive and pine trees, offering a serene environment with pathways and cobblestone streets for runners and joggers.
Simply amazing to see this place. Athens is full of culture, great cafes, great coffee cafes, and of course the history. The walk up was a bit of a struggle but once on the top the views were amazing. Highly recommend this as a place to see.
Doug B — Google review
Waste of money. Embarrassingly poor quality of experience for either the tourist that wants to try to understand the history, or the more experienced historian. Zeus, the father of Athena, and therefore Athens, deserves so much more reverence, explanations, context, basic efforts to help visitors. The information when you do get any is really scant, and doesn't help you understand the current philosophy for preserving and restoring the site. You might as well stand at Hadrian's gate, take a few photos and save the 20 euros for the entry - you are really only missing out on section after section of roped off stones. Yes, there is a free information QR code, it's so bad. Yes, there are QR codes next to stones, didn't work, and that's assuming your camera can read them - some are very distant behind barriers. There are buildings, one with a frieze and sign saying 'place of relief' - is that a joke? What is it? There are buildings, even tell of a mosaic, who knows, there was a black and white drawing. I could go on. This is an approach to displaying antiquity that is in itself ancient, lazy and half arsed. Take the free photo opp and move on, go up the road to the Panathenaeic site, now that is brilliant.
Jaime T — Google review
We really liked seeing this ancient structure from outside the gates, didn't pay to get in. You can see everything from outside the gates, that you would pay to see up close. Either way a very beautiful site, a must see if first time in Athens.
Sami S — Google review
If you can visit this site during “free” days - do it, otherwise take a free picture near the Hadrians gate, it is not with to pay 20 EUR per visit. Just few columns, nothing much to see.
Svetlana F — Google review
Very cool place to visit. Not nearly as crowded as the Acropolis, but there is a lot less to see. We did have trouble accessing the QR codes that were being used for the self-guided tour however, but they did have some very informative signs that we could use as well.
David V — Google review
If mythology/history has a lot meaning and you are mostly there to know about history of these rocks and ruins you should go and check the place otherwise I wouldn't recommend going, for me it's ruins where u can not explore anything because it is prohibited to go near everything. Waste of time and money, but if u have good camera you can take nice shots with pillars and acropolis together. p.s official website says different price for tickets and if u buy ticket at that place it costs different price, also opening hours are different on website and irl.
Christina — Google review
Honestly I dont see why anyone would pay to see something you can see pretty well from the gate. Its in scaffolding which kind of takes away from everything but its understandable why they have done it. Personally Im very glad I didnt pay or keep it on our itinerary and instead just walked by.
Carissa-Rae F — Google review
The oldest history ever. It's so amazing to think this area is over 2500 years old and much is still standing. The way it was built is beyond imagination but it's there. The climb to see it was fairly tough but everyone in our group did fine and 2 people had just had knee surgery too. If you're in Greece you MUST see it.

Flea & Street Markets
The Monastiraki Flea Market is a bustling labyrinth of eclectic outlets offering a wide range of goods, from souvenirs and artisanal crafts to furniture and army surplus. The market's vibrant atmosphere is enhanced by the backdrop of the Acropolis, creating a unique shopping experience. It appeals to shopaholics, art enthusiasts, and those interested in local culture and creativity. Visitors can explore diverse offerings while enjoying bargaining for souvenirs and goods.
This is take great place to shop for souvenirs, jewelry, coins, antiques, and just about anything you can imagine. The prices are quite reasonable and it's not very expensive. There are also many, many nice restaurants in this area along with kiosks where you can buy super cheap drinks like water, energy drinks, beer, and Europeans love to smoke, so you can also get cheap smokes everywhere. It is well with the trip.
Michael H — Google review
At first glance it’s just a narrow street with repetitive souvenirs being sold from store to store, but if you go to the end and turn right, you’ll get the real flea market. It’s less crowded and shady. Ready lovely to just browse and hassle free.

A lively and colorful market in the heart of Athens! Great place to wander, shop for souvenirs, antiques, and handmade items. Fun atmosphere with street music, friendly vendors, and plenty of cafés nearby. A must-visit for a taste of local culture.
Lela A — Google review
Great place to pick up some memories to take home. A lot of items are repeated throughout the shops, so take your time browsing to find your favourite designs and best prices. It's alley upon alley of beautifully crafted gifts and souvenirs. The postcard shops don't sell stamps but the post office is not far. Make sure to check the Best Before/Expiry date on any food items. Easy to get to by Monastiraki metro station. Plenty of restaurants in the area to eat and take a rest as well, if you don't mind paying a little tourist tax.
Tansy C — Google review
The Monastiraki Flea Market is one of my favourite places in Athens, and not just because of what you can buy there. The treasures on offer range from the genuinely traditional — komboloi, bouzoukis, old records — to the utterly absurd, like mobile phone cases with cat faces proudly stamped “Made in China.” It’s this mix that makes the place irresistible. But what really matters here isn’t the merchandise, it’s the atmosphere. The market is alive with chatter, bargaining, laughter, and the constant ebb and flow of locals and travellers. You’ll catch the smell of souvlaki curling through the air, hear snippets of music from a nearby stall, and if you take a turn into one of the side alleys, you’ll find cafés perfect for sitting with a coffee while watching the whole buzzing theatre play out around you. It’s less about consumption and more about immersion — though yes, you might walk away with a komboloi, a bouzouki, and, why not, a ridiculous cat phone case. Monastiraki is a must in Athens, because it gives you all of Athens in miniature: history, humour, chaos, and charm.
Arik — Google review
Unending rows of all kinds of shops - souvenir stores, clothing stores, leather goods, and antique stalls. Depending on the day of the week and the time of day, it may be relatively calm (first thing in the morning) or overrun with tourists. I found the prices to be touristy-high but lower than in other areas. Most goods appeared to be made in Greece.
Jonathan B — Google review

Opos Palia is a local restaurant located just a short walk from the Acropolis Museum in Athens. Despite its unassuming interior, it offers an authentic dining experience with fantastic food at reasonable prices. While some may be wary of eateries near tourist attractions, this gem stands out for its delicious dishes and generous portions. The menu features enticing options like grilled vegetables salad with balsamic vinaigrette, juicy grilled squid, and flavorful pork steak.
We really liked this tavern. We had lunch here in the summer. We took two tables outside. We were served very quickly. The food turned out to be very delicious. The prices were reasonable. I liked the green salad and the stuffed tomatoes and peppers. My wife liked the octopus. A special shoutout to the person who created the cocktail menu. You don't find craft beer in every Greek tavern. The beer here was excellent. The homemade lemonade was also good. I would recommend this place to everyone who wants to visit Athens and try local cuisine.

Very good restaurant in town, the price is incredibly friendly, but the food and taste are also fantastic, be aware: the portion is big, but it is so yummy. We have 7 people, ordered 10 dishes, we afraid that we have to waste the food, but no, we finished all! Recommend the fried shrimp and squid, lamb, 4 cheeses mushroom, and eggplant in the oven!

This restaurant was recommended by my guide who lives nearby, and it turned out to be a great find! It’s located very close to the Pantheon but away from the busy tourist streets which gives it a much more local feel. There’s plenty of seating though you might need to wait a few minutes to be seated during peak hours. I liked it so much that I went there twice. So far I’ve tried the moussaka, Greek salad, and local meatballs with rice. Everything was absolutely delicious. The portions are generous and I could barely finish my meal. Highly recommend this place for authentic food and a relaxed atmosphere.

ended up eating here for both lunch and dinner — that’s how much we loved it! The grilled Talagani was absolutely incredible, and the soutzoukakia meatballs tasted just like something my grandma would have made — full of flavor and childhood memories. The atmosphere is cozy and lively, the service is quick, and the prices are fantastic for such generous portions. Totally recommend! 🇬🇷✨

Had a good experience dining here - tried the shrimp saganaki (excellent and highly recommended), moussaka as well as the grapevine wrapped rice. All in all, a pleasant experience as food was served promptly. It’s a very popular place so staff might be hard to get the attention of at times.

Excellent place to grab a bite after a long day touring the Acropolis. Many places in Plaka are tourist traps with overinflated prices but the prices here were very reasonable and the food was delicious. We only ordered 3 appetizers(baked feta, 2 sides of bread, chickpeas and zucchini balls) and were full pretty quickly as the portions were large. Would definitely recommend.

O Thanasis is a popular restaurant located near Monastiraki Square in Athens, Greece. Since 1965, it has been a family-friendly establishment offering classic souvlaki grills and pitas. The restaurant is known for its no-nonsense approach to traditional Greek dishes, with a focus on meat-centric options like gyros and souvlaki. This was our very first meal in Athens during the heat wave, and my son couldn’t have picked a better spot. It’s in the busy area by Monastiraki Square, but the service is super fast. The yogurt kebab was juicy and packed with flavor, and the Greek salad tasted so fresh. Portions are generous, the beer was ice-cold, and the lively vibe made the crazy heat much easier to handle. Such a great start to our trip. Highly recommend!

I had the yogurtlu kebab, and it was tasty and full of flavor. The portion size was huge, and although the prices are high, it was okay considering the restaurants location and the big portion size. The place was packed and had a lively vibe. We also got tzatziki, pita bread to dip in the tzatziki, and red wine, all of which were good. Due to its touristic location, the restaurant might look like a tourist trap, but they actually serve delicious food.

The meat I ate at Thanasis Kebab was generally juicy and cooked to the right consistency, but it was quite salty for my taste. The plus points of the place were the large portions and the well-cooked meat. Despite being ranked 46th among the top 100 restaurants on Taste Atlas and 1st in Greece, I personally don't think it deserves these scores in terms of price, service, or taste. I believe its central location is what makes it popular. If you're considering eating here, I'd recommend you think twice

Restaurant
Aglio, Olio & Peperoncino is a charming Italian restaurant located near the Acropolis Metro Station in Makrianni. Despite its small size and limited outdoor space, this eatery is celebrated for its delectable pasta dishes, daily specials, salads, and bruschetta appetizers. The authentic flavors and original trattoria ambiance make it a favorite among visitors.
If you are in Athens and fancy something other than Greek Food. You need to try this restaurant. I now live in Athens for 2 years and still one of my favorite restaurants. The food is consistently amazing and delicious. From the Salads, appetizers to the home made pasta to the wine. The anchovy bruschetta, to the trout salad. I can’t speak highly enough about this place.

Authentic people, authentic Italian cuisine , the owner of the restaurant prepare the dishes himself. ♥️ If you are stressed and you like fast food this is not a place for you. If you have taste, looking for a relaxed atmosphere, nice food and positive people, this is the place for you. I definitely recommend this place, simple, authentic, unique.

My amazing place in Athens It is probably the best Restaurant in Athens. The size is just right. The familar atmosphere and the quality and the taste of the dishes is astonishing. I'm everytime come excited and leave satisfied. A big thumps up👍. Keep going and never change please🙏

A booking for 8 family members of which many are Italian. The food was absolutely brilliant . Great portions full of flavour and a testament to the Italian heritage of the chef. The staff provided suggestions and the service was as good as the food. It is always tough to hit the right spot with Italians and Italian food outside of Italy but this place did so with ease. Pricing is excellent and thoroughly recommend.

We came in right before closing and everyone could not have been kinder. We had cocktails, the Greek salad, the bruschetta with speck, and the dish named after the restaurant. All of them were divine. The pasta dish was so simple and so very elegant. And the bill was far less than 50€. Staff spoke English and the menu was also translated. Strongly recommend.

By far the best, most delicious, perfectly cooked pasta in Athens. With the loveliest staff and chillest vibe. 10 out of 10 always.

Had a lovely dinner here. Spaghetti Aglio Olio was on point, and we got the spiciness we asked for, superb! I really enjoyed the salad made with rocket leaves, fresh and delightful flavours. Service was great, the decor was thoroughly charming. I highly recommend for an enjoyable dining experience.

Japanese restaurant
Birdman Japanese Bar + Grill is a cozy spot that offers a unique blend of Japanese cuisine and Greek flavors. Located in an unassuming alley below Syntagma Square, this eatery is the brainchild of chef Aris Vezenes.
The restaurant was incredible, food, drinks and vibes. Amazing playlist today. The broccoli skewer was a really notable dish as it was incredible and I don’t necessarily love broccoli. I would highly recommend it to my friends to go there. I had a great time.

What a night! Great music, great food, great service, and if that weren't enough, great cocktails. I know there are many different restaurants and bars in Athens, but there's no other place where they all come together in one place.
Deniz E — Google review
What an evening! We were greeted by vinyl soul music and lovely hosts. We enjoyed our evening at the bar in front of the busy grill. Perfectly executed food: we had a wide range of japanese skewers, fresh appetizers and nice cocktails and draught beer. Everything was exeptional. Service was lovely as well and always there, when we wanted to order. Perfect in every way! It gets really busy, so plan ahead and book a reservation! Definitely one of our highlights on our trip!

I’ve been to Birdman twice 6 months apart and each one was a true culinary experience. A friend had originally recommended this spot and after our first time, we could not wait to get back to Athens and visit this restaurant once again. Their version of fusion foods are exceptionally prepared and truly delicious. This time we invited our friends and we could not have enough of anything we tasted. We will surely be coming here the next time we visit Athens.

The atmosphere is vibrant yet cozy, the music is great, and the service is spot-on friendly, attentive, and fast. Every dish is packed with flavor; the wagyu skewers and crispy rice are unforgettable! The cocktails are perfectly balanced and beautifully presented. Definitely one of the best dining experiences in Athens stylish, fun, and full of energy. Highly recommend booking ahead!
Burcu E — Google review
It was a complete disappointment. They cut the Wagyu steak three times and then grilled it again. They even sliced the last one completely and re-cooked it. When I told them I couldn't accept this, that the meat had lost all its juices, they tried to convince me for nearly 10 minutes. Finally, they made a new one, with all their sullenness. If you don't even know how to cook meat, at least be polite to the customer and admit you couldn't do it. Once cut, you can't re-cook it! Other than that, the food I ordered was average. The place is small and uncomfortable. The people wearing black aprons are so sullen that they drain your energy. Only the waiters and bartenders are friendly.

One of the very best spots in Athens. The atmosphere, the people, the music, and the service are outstanding. The food is out of this world: yakitori, nigiri, katsu sando, tataki, tartar, and gyoza are perfection. Cocktails and sake are excellent, and the vibe is always great with top DJs. I come to Athens frequently, and this is the place I never miss. A true must-visit in the city. As a wine lover, my only wish would be for a larger wine list, since everything else is so thoughtfully curated. Special mention to Vasya, who is simply amazing—her warm welcome, professionalism, and ability to organize everything flawlessly make every visit exceptional. Eftechia, with her passion for wine, and Chris at the bar, with his energy and talent, also deserve recognition. And truly, the whole team makes Birdman such an organic, welcoming place where service and hospitality shine every time.
Erdem T — Google review
We visited Birdman on a Sunday evening and were greeted by very polite and helpful staff who made us feel welcome throughout our visit. Although the restaurant is quite small, it has a pleasant and relaxed vibe that adds to the overall dining experience. The food was nicely cooked and enjoyable, with good attention to flavour and presentation. However, in comparison with other Asian restaurants in the area, the menu and dishes felt a little less distinctive. The cocktail, while well-made, was noticeably small in portion for its price, which was a little disappointing. Overall, Birdman offers a friendly atmosphere and well-prepared food, making it a nice spot for a casual meal, though it could benefit from a touch more originality—and perhaps more generous cocktails—to stand out among its peers.
