Then I ordered #144 Dau Hu Xao To- stir fry tofu and veggies in a black bean sauce served with white rice. This was my first time trying this one and I would order it again. It’s not spicy at all, had a nice deep flavor and a good size portion. My friend ordered her usual #11 Pho Ga and loved it.

It’s so good! We came to town for a concert and love farm to table restaurants so we got reservations here. When you walk in, you pass what initially looks like a slightly overgrown flowery landscaping. As you continue, you realize it’s food! Some peppers, some herbs, and more. When I think family style, I envision a vat of food that each person has to scoop onto their plate (like Bucca de Peppo or Stroud's) so I would never have chosen that if the server didn’t explain it better. The first and second course had multiple dishes. It was more of a tapa style tasting menu. Absolutely fabulous! I am floored that it was only $80 a person for that much food. We love to go to different tasting menu options in Kansas City and I can tell you, none of them are only $80. I had heard of Vicia through the STL magazines and the James Beard Foundation, so I had high hopes. Luckily our experience lived up to the hype. The restaurant itself is beautiful with open space and lots of windows. Depending on where you sit, you have a great view of the kitchen as well. The staff were welcoming, professional and friendly. Very good first impression. I was initially considering getting an appetizer and cocktail before starting dinner, but I'm glad I didn't or I would have been uncomfortably stuffed. We decided to go with the "Let us cook for you" menu option where they choose the dishes to eat that night as well as the regular and elevated wine pairings. They described it as similar to a tasting menu without the formality of one, which I think is a fantastic idea. The chefs also adjust the portion size based on your party size, which is helpful if there are more than just 2 people in a party. This allowed us to sample a lot of the dishes and not have to think about it. The first course consisted of 5 starters (Albacore tuna sashimi, turnips, mussels on the half shell, focaccia, crispy rice). My favorites were the sashimi and crispy rice. It can be tough to pair wine with so many dishes, but the sommelier talked about the wines and we had fun deciding which wine went with which food best. Second course was three dishes (Sugar snap peas, lamb cavatelli and BBQ pork collar). The lamb and pork were so rich and delicious with the peas to cut through with some nice acidity and sweetness. For dessert, we were given the crepe creme brulee and a small piece of chocolate cake for my birthday, which was super nice. I tell you, I'd never thought to brulee a crepe, but holy cow it was amazing. Not too sweet with a nice crunch and soft texture together. Would 100% recommend. I ordered the chicken shawarma sandwich and was surprised by and delighted with the inclusion of pickles, it was so tasty!  The fries were so savory as well, I'm guessing fried in peanut oil.  The serving size of the fries was much larger than expected and could easily be shared between 2 people.  Our group ordered the stuffed grape leaves and several people in our party took a piece of baklava for the road, it was extra nutty and absolutely delicious. There was plenty of seating and the space was clean.

He walked past me like he did not see me standing there holding the bag of food and saying excuse me and trying to get his attention, he then went to the bar area and behind the register and continued to ignore me. First time I mistakenly parked in a handicap spot. Decent food that was reasonably priced in my opinion. I ordered the tonkatsu ramen, asain crepe, siracha shrimp and bubble milk tea. The tonkatsu ramen wasn't very flavorful as it lacks that rich creamy tonkatsu broth. The crepe tasted good but it could have been crispier. The siracha shrimp tasted good as well but nothing special. Their bubble tea was sweeter than normal milk tea and lacked actual tea taste. I personally stay away from Asian restaurants that have a variety of Asian cusine but this was one I don't regret trying. Next time I come I will try the hotpot and other dishes that seemed interesting. I definitely need to try more of their dishes as I think this place has potential.

As much of contradiction as that may seem to be, let me assure you that it can be and has been done. There is a way, though I am not privy to it, that people can make these scrumptiously dense and yet airy, filling and yet not doughy little bits of sorta-round soul-stirring tasty bits of goodness. If I knew how to do it, I think that perhaps I wouldn't be on the hunt for places that do it well. And yes, I do, at times, wish that I had had the foresight in my childhood to have asked my grandmother how she made her biscuits. She died before I was emotionally aware enough to ask. But that experience from my youth stays with me in ways that I've not yet found appropriate words to express. So that's what I feel when I think about experiencing biscuits and gravy. For me, the gravy was too watery and lacked a good balance of sausage, as in, not nearly enough. And what was there, were tiny. No real chunks. More like crumbs. Yes, it was woefully bereft of sausage, so much so that I wondered if they had used an entire patty. The sausage seemed to lack flavor, or seasoning and boarded on bland for me. Again, I am trying to balance my own desires with how a business does their offerings. The biscuits were just too thick for me. They tasted more like cornbread to me and lacked the flakiness that southern-style biscuits tend to have. I don't really know how to accurately describe these biscuits other than to say, for me, they weren't biscuits that I am accustomed to. So for me, there is still only one place, so far, that has come close to granting me a tasteful moment of childhood smiles and grins in the form of biscuits and gravy. The Bar was in the Rear and yes the still serve the food. It was early afternoon if it was even past noon when I discovered the new renovated "Arkansas Fried Chicken" I can't wait to visit it at night. Ow & check it out.
