Theme park
Water & Amusement Parks
Huis Ten Bosch, located in northern Kyushu, is a sprawling theme park that replicates the charm of a 17th-century Dutch village. The park features traditional European-style hotels, restaurants, museums, windmills, and gardens. Additionally, visitors can explore an owl forest, enjoy gondola rides and high-tech light shows, experience virtual reality attractions and even skate on an illuminated ice rink.
You can tell the care and love they've put in this theme park! We booked a stay at the nearby Hotel Okura so it was easy to stay at night for fireworks (it was spring season so there seemed to be fireworks every weekend). The best part was that the place wasn't crowded so it felt really serene yet still fun for families. We're already planning to visit again to conquer some of the VR attractions we missed.
Gina N — Google review
Visiting Huis Ten Bosch during Christmas was like stepping into a European winter fairy tale! The entire park transforms into a glowing wonderland, with millions of LED lights covering buildings, trees, and canals — it’s easily one of the most beautiful illuminations in Japan. There’s a giant Christmas tree in the center plaza that lights up in sync with music, and the seasonal decorations throughout the Dutch-style town add a festive, cozy vibe. Everywhere you walk, there’s holiday music playing softly in the background, creating a warm and cheerful atmosphere. The Christmas Market stalls sell warm treats like hot cocoa, mulled wine, roasted meats, and festive desserts. You can also shop for unique ornaments and European-style holiday gifts. The parades and performances feel very special during the holidays, especially when paired with fireworks in the evening. If you go, dress warmly — it’s chilly, especially by the water! I recommend staying until after dark to really enjoy the lights. It’s perfect for couples, families, or anyone wanting to get into the holiday spirit. Huis Ten Bosch at Christmas is unforgettable — 100% worth the trip!

A magical place in Japan that transports you to Europe. Unlike most of Japan's theme parks, this one is not that crowded. It has rides and attractions suitable for all ages, also has team lab attractions which I enjoyed. The flower theme changes every month. It was rose season when we visited. Since the area is wide, it would be better to plan your visit ahead. Advisable for a full day visit. There is also a wide selection of restaurants and food stalls available, including affordable ones just outside the entrance (such as Ringerhut).
Kaye D — Google review
Trip Highlight in Fukuoka! Our day here was the highlight of our Fukuoka vacation! Our family thoroughly enjoyed all the sights and rides—there’s so much to see, do, explore, and eat. We visited on a weekday, so it wasn’t very crowded, and we were able to enter most attractions with ease. The place is beautiful, well-maintained, and very organized. Staff were friendly and attentive, which made the experience even better. I took a break at one of the coffee shops, and was pleasantly surprised by how good the coffee and food were. We also did the boat ride during sunset, and it was absolutely wonderful—a peaceful and scenic way to end the day. Definitely a must-try, esp for families and groups!

This place is big and fun. There are bicycle rental for 3000¥, 1 hr later 1000¥. There is a sightseeing boat from Welcome gate to Canal city ( not in hakata) . We waited 30 minutes for the Zipline. It was very fun and adventurous! There was also a bus from the gate to Attractions. There are some good restaurants everywhere. A shooting game is near the pier ( I didn't win any :( ) At the attraction town, there's a chocolate shop with a challenge. The VR took 25 minutes but it last only 3 minutes. Inside the hotel, there's a french buffet all you can eat, for only 16.800¥ 2 adults 1 child. There are two inside playground for children, the other one which is more tech, needs to wait 45 minutes :/. Other games to average 20 minutes. There is also a 90 meter ferris wheel 🎡. A water park is included too! A fishing game is inside a mall. My family won the first and second place!!. At 20:10, near the water park there is a light show that lasts 10 minutes and fireworks at 9 PM . I recommend you to not use map, it may be a little hard but It will be fun finding places! But from huis ten Bosch station, since 8 30 pm I didn't see the huis tên bosch express for Hakata station
Binh N — Google review
Such a fun and quirky theme park, some parts feels like you are transported directly to Amsterdam, yet a keen eye may spot some differences. The activities in the park will keep young and older kids entertained for a whole day, and eateries on site while more expensive than the cities are reasonable for a theme park. Easy access by direct train from Fukuoka. Bear the crowd by visiting on a weekday.
Charles Y — Google review
Very easy to park and get in. Was a weekday so not so busy. A few visitors so we enjoyed all the park had to provide. Some things are a bit dated but that does add does nostalgia to it. Fireworks short at 10 min although if you know the time it’s fun. Recommend to see at least once.

Kujukushima Pearl Sea Resort in Sasebo, Japan is a waterfront complex known for its stunning coastline and rich cultural influences. Visitors can explore an aquarium, shop at various stores, dine at restaurants, and enjoy boat rides. The resort hosts several festivals throughout the year, including the winter oyster festival featuring flavorful oysters and the annual Yosakoi Sasebo festival in autumn.
This sea cruise is actually really fun and if you happen to be considering it, do it! I went on a clear day in December and the weather was about 58, so it was totally fine. The boat itself is spacious with tons of seats, but you can also go out on the deck and up in a very small crows nest — elevated by about ten spiral steps. It’s not super high but it’s a cool view and I was surprised it was freely open to the public. Small snacks and some drinks and souvenirs are sold on the boat, and there is comprehensive English audio for the island tour. Honestly this compares very favorably to Matsushima in Sendai, I liked this a lot better even though this is not nearly as famous.
John B — Google review
I really liked the experience. I went there on Tuesday, and there were still a lot of tourists. Luckily, I managed to get on the cruise ahead of time, as it departs every hour and the trip lasts 50 minutes.
Rhea — Google review
A relaxing hour-long boat ride that thoughtfully presented the beautiful islands. Can go up onto the deck for an elevated view. There are toilets, gift corners, and drinks corners on board.
Karen H — Google review
Fast ship, well organized, clean facilities. Waiting area was climatised with free wifi. The tour itself was beautiful. We had quite a lot of exhaust to inhale but it was worth it nonetheless.
Margot E — Google review
Nice place for a one day visit with the family. There is an open park, restaurants, aquarium, and terminal for tour ships of the 99 islands. The aquarium is not that big and offered a discount for Sasebo residents (which includes the US military) There are also sea kayaks for rent.
Alan B — Google review
Loved the 99 island boat trip. So relaxing and you could see all the oyster farms
Lyn Q — Google review
Excellent views, I enjoyed every bit of it, all the aquatic animals were healthy
Adebisi K — Google review
The boat ride was well worth the visit. Beautiful place cruising around the small islands, and interesting how the big boat can turn around on a very small inlet; almost like a Disney boat ride on rails under the water.

Hirado Castle, located in Hirado City, Nagasaki Prefecture, is a restored 18th-century hilltop castle offering panoramic views of the Hirado Strait. The castle was originally built in 1599 by Shigenobu Matsuura, a powerful feudal lord.
Only open from 8:30 am to 5 pm, my visit was short lived as I arrived 30 minutes prior. The grounds are vast and only little ground was covered, but from my experience it was a wondrous experience getting to see the beautiful architecture of the walls that barricade around the castle itself. There is a tour offered that provides a rich history background but is an optional offer through the main castle, which I was not able to see myself in this trip. So much was left unseen so another visit seems to be in order for a more riveting experience.
KG & — Google review
Definitely a must see if you are in the area or within driving distance. This castle is small but very interactive and keeps you entertained. There are games and you can learn about the history as well. On the very top floor of the castle they offer a photograph service that is done via your phone through an app. That was a big plus. I would recommend parking in the shrine area as it is easier to access the castle and this way you can see the shrine as well which is pretty nice and a good size.
Japan E — Google review
Beautiful, historic place to visit. We went on a Saturday and it was not very busy. Lots of walking to do around the area where the castle is located.
Cigi L — Google review
Authentic entrance... I thought it was abandoned when we started into the property grounds. Overgrown foliage and the sound of crickets or similar, I felt like I was in an old Indiana Jones movie. Once by the castle, the outside structure was a replica of the original, but the inside was completely modernized and more like a museum. The view from the top was awesome though. Not a fan of the many spiders, but the wildlife around was their territory!!
Ellie C — Google review
You can walk around the castle grounds and explore. There is no entrance fee except for the main tower where you can get a good location to view the vicinity. There are other viewing spots around the castle as well though. There’s also a shrine within the castle grounds. Nice to visit when in Hirado.
Bernadette G — Google review
I went out of my way to see Hirado Castle and don’t regret it! Entry was ¥520, and it’s worth it, for the fantastic tower view and small museum. Going up in the tower you’ll get a great view of the city of Hirado, Hirado Bridge, and the ocean. The castle complex is also really cool. There’s some replica buildings, a small gift shop, and right there in one small area. If you’re English speaking- be aware that nearly all of the museum is in Japanese. It’s a great museum though and is worth checking out if you’re willing to use GoogleLens. Lastly, bring cash. The gift shop only accepts cash payments and the ticket machine in the tower only accepts cash.
Cassandra T — Google review
1700 Historic Castle of the Matsura clan. Large area to explore and opportunities to take awesome photos of the castle, city and bay area. I had fun wrestling in the sumo area. Free access but 500 yen to go inside the museum and top view area.
Pedro C — Google review
I went to Hirado Castle on a fairly overcast day, but it was still fantastic. The inside of the castle has been made into an interactive museum. You can do a quiz and write kanji on a projector screen. It was really fun. Just be warned that you will probably need a car.

The Tenkaiho Observatory is a popular hilltop lookout point in Sasebo, offering stunning views of approximately 200 Kujūku Islands. It is known for its colorful flowers, with rape blossoms in spring and cosmos in fall attracting many visitors. The observatory provides panoramic views of the entire Kujuku Islands and is favored for its sunset views, especially during the spring and fall months when canola fields and fall foliage are particularly beautiful.
One of the best sunset views I’ve ever seen. It’s a quiet park, with an observatory deck where you have a full view in all angles. On one side, you can see Sasebo city and the harbor, and the other side has the seaside sunset with several island scattered in the sea. There are some more far away islands near the end of the sights, making the scene even more interesting. Overall, this is a great spot to enjoy sunset.
Jason C — Google review
We took taxi from cruise port to get to the 99 islands and made reservation with the driver to come pick us up in 2 hours, because the public transportation was not convenient. What an amazing experience looking at these varieties of small islands, the most beautiful bay in the world!
Yan Z — Google review
Really pretty place with lots of parking and clean toilets. Nice to walk around as it was very quiet. And omg the view. You definitely have to visit
Karl C — Google review
Beautiful spot to appreciate mass plantings of cosmos (early fall) and mustard seed (spring, often coinciding with Sakura blooms). Stunning sunsets overlooking 99 Islands. Quick drive (15-20 mins) from downtown Sasebo, on the way to Shirahama beach. Plenty of free parking.

To get here you have to drive up hill so be sure your car will survive if it’s a tiny k car. But the view on a clear day is totally worth it. Just climbing the little platform makes a huge difference in vantage point. Worth a short 20 minute detour. Great phot ops

For a breathtaking 360-degree view of Sasebo and its surrounding islands, make your way to the Ishidake Observatory 石岳展望台園地. Perched high in a tower, this vantage point offers unparalleled vistas, especially during sunset and the golden hour. Accessible by car or motorcycle, with an option for an adventurous bicycle ride, reaching the observatory involves a scenic but challenging 300-meter walk from the parking lot.
Beautiful view, very quiet. A short walk from the parking area through the canopy. We liked it a lot.
Margot E — Google review
Absolutely stunning view. Unfortunately the 300m pathway to the top is slippery, muddy, and full of stones / steps. Definitely not suitable for people with mobility issues. No facilities on site (toilets, vending machines, etc). The lookout tower has definitely seen better days, and could do with some maintenance and a good clean. Free admission, and plenty of parking. The weather wasn’t fantastic when I went, but was still a great experience overall. Had the whole place to myself. Definitely worth a visit if you’re physically able and in the area.
Evalyn V — Google review
Visited about 8.30 am on a sunday. Nobody was there. So, enjoyied the view without disturbance. While i was there, people staeted to arrive. There was not much space for more than 10-15 at a time.
Mahesh — Google review
Free admission, opened daily and closes at 2100. Once you arrive at the small parking lot, you'll have to walk about 300 meters up the stone and muddy (if it just rained) walkway. A little bit of a challenge, don't wear heels, make sure to wear boots or sneakers No wheelchair or handicap parking, not recommended for the elderly or handicapped. There isn't a toilet available in the area, the toilet is located at the bottom of the hill at Mori Kirara, which is the Botanical gardens/Zoo. The climb to the top ain't easy. There's a small area with a beautiful view just below the observation deck. Climbing up the stairway to the top you'll get a wonderful view of the area, it's a breathtaking experience. Recommend to travel here on a clear day and don't go after a rainy day.
Jay J — Google review
This is a peaceful beautiful location. I walked from a distance away, but there is easy parking and the climb is very easy and clean. Perfect place for a picnic lunch with a stunning view.
Trish D — Google review
Beautiful view. I caught it on a clear spring day and it was wonderful. Much better than Matsushima in Miyagi. Word of warning: there's only one road up and down so be careful, drivers, walkers, and bikers.
Frank N — Google review
Beautiful place to enjoy the sunset....when the day soo sunny you can see the sunset from here...but the place is quiet far from the bus stop if you walk...There's no public transportation to go until the car park...you better go there by car or motorcycle...or if you want more exciting experience...you can go by bicycle...even though the road is not easy for it but i think it will be unforgetable and your effort will be paid after you arrived there and saw the sunset....very-very beautiful....and make it sure the weather is not cloudy or rain
Shmily H — Google review
Absolutely beautiful location! My husband and I saw so much of the area we are calling home. It was breath-taking and well worth the trip. The small hike up to the observation tower was very nice too.

Nagushiyama Park, located in Sasebo, is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts. The park boasts a peak of 234 meters, offering stunning views of the surrounding sea, Kujukushima, and Saikai National Park. During springtime, the slopes come alive with approximately 100,000 Kurume and Hirado azaleas in vibrant shades of pink, red, purple, and white.
Beautiful place! Wear comfortable shoes and clothes for hiking. Small playground. The ice cream shop was closed before 5 pm

The blooms are beautiful. Until April 30th . But after 5 PM it is free entry and you can see the sunset it’s fabulous
D P — Google review
When the azaleas are blooming and the weather is clear this park is breathtaking. Near 180 degree views from the top. It must have taken decades to plant all the azaleas as they stretch as far as you can see. Good parking. Y500 entrance fee per person is a little expensive for a family. Nice drive up here, too, on very windy roads.
Joe N — Google review
Beautiful all year round, but particularly around April when the whole place is covered in a rainbow carpet of azaleas (tsutsuji). The islands in the background are the northern Kujukushima Islands (99 Islands).

Nestled in the heart of Sasebo, Yumihari Park is a hidden gem that offers visitors a unique blend of history and stunning natural beauty. Once home to a secret Japanese military base, remnants of its past can be discovered along the winding road leading up to the park. The highlight here is undoubtedly the observation deck, which provides panoramic views of the breathtaking Kukuju Islands—affectionately known as 'the Ninety-nine Islands of Nagasaki.'
The height is higher than most of 99 island observatory.

I had the pleasure of visiting this incredible park, and I was blown away by the stunning views! From the top, you can see the entire city of Sasebo, and it's absolutely breathtaking. It truly feels like being on top of the world. The park itself is impressively clean, which really enhances the experience. The well-maintained paths and lush greenery create a serene environment that is perfect for a relaxing day out. Whether you're looking for a peaceful walk or a picturesque spot for photos, this park is a must-visit. It's a hidden gem that's definitely worth exploring! Highly recommended!

This is a good place to enjoy a little history and take in some wonderful views. There are numerous picnic tables throughout the park and it would make for a great date location for you and your special person. Bathrooms are very clean normally and there are several vending machines in the event you become thirsty.

Amazing park, such a clean place. It feels great to walk in such clean nature and well taken care of. Recommended!!
Pierre R — Google review
Nice quick walking path with three spots to view Sasebo from above. There also a path from the Yumihari Hotel to reach the park. Dogs must be kept on leash and there a water fountain as well as public bathrooms and vending machines. Few spots to sit around park. Some areas have been overground with nature but the main paths are cleared. Plenty of parking , I went in August so I would suggest bringing mosquito spray if you plan on walking in the other areas beside observation deck.

Sasebo Port, located in Japan, has a rich history dating back to the establishment of the Sasebo Naval District Headquarters. The port boasts modern architectural monuments built by some of Japan's best technicians. In 2015, the International Terminal was completed, allowing large cruise ships to dock and making Sasebo more accessible to tourists. The port is also known for housing bases for the U.S. Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
Spent a Few Days while I was on WEST-PAC 02-03
Les S — Google review
The port isn't to talk about with the terminal there. They did have vendors selling their wares and an information counter. They didn't have greeters playing music or inside terminal free tea service, or free painted fans or banners with your name hand printed on it like two other terminals. We did buy a Kimono. So, it did end up being worthwhile. A free shuttle service was there to bring us to the covered street shopping mall.

With clear signage and informative boards, finding this temple is relatively effortless, although the narrow roads require cautious driving. The vibrant hues of fiery red autumn leaves and golden ginkgo trees adorn the surroundings, creating a mesmerizing sight. At the heart of this sacred place lies the principal figure of Kannon Bodhisattva, accompanied by Nio statues in Okunoin.
Magical place.

Theme park
Arita Porcelain Park is a unique theme park that features gardens and a reconstruction of Germany's Zwinger Palace, showcasing exquisite porcelain displays dating back to the 17th century. The park offers workshops and galleries where visitors can witness master artisans creating intricate porcelain pieces. This renowned porcelain holds historical significance as Japan's first porcelain, prized for its delicate craftsmanship and timeless beauty. While it attracts art enthusiasts and collectors, it also serves as a cherished souvenir for travelers due to its functional use in daily life.
It's great to see this historical masterpiece made by Japanese craftsmen. Beautiful and elegant and would make you feel like now you want to visit EU. But this place is filled with tourists. For some reason Chinese tourists love the drug store at entrance. 😀😀
Shan A — Google review
It is heart breaking to see this place going up in ruins due to declining interests from tourists. The palace building is so beautiful but sadly it is out of bounds. You can get a taxi from the arita station. The bus only plus on weekends.
Saurabh — Google review
It is a beautiful place, that anyone should visit to get a totally other experience in Japan. They rebuilded one of the most impressive German „castles“, the Dresdner Zwinger, there. Sadly the park has not the financial backbone anymore to keep everything at 100%, but the staff around try there best. Right now (May 2025) there is no ticket fee anymore - so to keep the Porcelain park alive, get some souvenirs and keep on telling people about it.
René H — Google review
I rolled into Arita Porcelain Park after bumping down a pothole‑pocked lane that felt more British countryside than Japanese ceramic village. Then suddenly there it was: a startling, massive replica of Dresden’s Zwinger Palace, planted smack in the middle of rural Kyushu—looming like Godzilla and completely surreal. First thought: Why is this place being allowed to unravel? The Tudor‑style cottages and faux‑European façades are faded, and I even spotted excavators tearing one of them down. It’s the kind of place that feels like it could close unless someone—government or private—steps in soon, and that's a shame. The neglect got under my skin. Behind that palace there’s a picturesque baroque garden leading down to a quiet lake and a miniature putting‑golf course that felt eerily abandoned. I sat in a little cabin out back, imagining I’d discovered a secret urban‑explorer site—it’s charming in that gritty, half‑forgotten way. If the wife ever gives me the boot, I'm renaming myself the Viscount of Kyushu and moving in. Once inside, though, the shops were at odds with the pikey state of the place: there’s a proud, polished pottery shop stocked with Arita ware, and a tasting corner where you can sip sake—in classy mugs, of course. Loads of excellent edibles from Saga all in one souvenir shop. It’s obvious someone cares, at least about that side. I wouldn’t make this your whole day—but if you enjoy architectural oddballs, faded grandeur, or just a bit of silliness mixed with actual craft, it’s a fun detour. All in all, I had a pleasant time here and because it's such a wildcard I'm giving it a high score. Hot tip? Pair it with a stop at Takeo Onsen down the road to balance the eccentricity with genuine local atmosphere.

Lovely park, full of European images and footprints. Because we arrived on Sunday, most shops didn't open. Wish they had more tourist friendly hours.
Caroline W — Google review
It’s a beautiful park, sadly most of it is closed, abandoned and not operational. There was charming pottery workshops that you could do anytime but they only send the ready produce to Japan. Clearly not suitable for any foreigners, possibly that’s why it’s getting abandoned.
Emilia S — Google review
View is beautiful, buildings are a bit old and run down but still looks great and give that classy European feel. It’s a great place to spend about an hour to walk around and take some photos. Unfortunately this place had became a tourist shopping spot instead of a place to relax. During our visit, many long tour buses unloading dozens of loud speaking tourists, hoarding photo spots. Taking numerous shots at the same angle until one find a satisfying shot.

Megane-iwa, also known as Glasses Rock, is a natural wonder located in Hirado, Japan. According to local legend, this 10-meter-tall rock formation was created when a devil-monster kicked a large stone, resulting in two large holes that resemble a pair of spectacles. While the origin story is fascinating, it's more likely that Glasses Rock was formed over time due to erosion.
Such a beautiful sight. Google maps sends you to a strange location where you end up parking next to a sweet older man’s house right outside the entrance to Megane-Iwa. He came outside and told me that it was okay for me to park by his home and walk up the steps to the park. My daughter loved the playground and I love the sights of the “glasses rock”
Sarah K — Google review
A free and beautiful public park, it seems the locals have grown weary of such an amazing sight as no one was there at the time. It was quite a peaceful and mysterious experience and there was a shrine/altar and a separate building that was padlocked. I’m sure to keep from people from desecrating the building. It truly is remarkable how nature can create such wonders. Located within a small neighborhood, parking would have to be managed within the small communal streets. I was stopped by a friendly local living just below the sight and was told that I could park just in front of the entrance as there aren’t too many passersby to witness the rocks formation. I went closer to the evening time around 6pm as it was beginning to grow dark which added to its mysterious allure. I wonder what it is like during the day as I plan my return to the rock.
KG & — Google review
Google map directions weren't as accurate, you could easily by pass the Megane-iwa (I've tried editing the directions on Google Maps to no avail atm, will try another day). The Glasses Rock is kinda hidden by the tall tree in front as you walk on the path. If it's your first time, when you reach the park that will be your destination for the Glasses Rock too.. The shrine is a beautiful serene place just below the Megane-iwa. There's a park for the kids to play as you enjoy learning the rich history of this marvellous place.

I went here last April 2019. Had to take the Midori Huis Ten Bosch Ltd Express train from Hakata Station to Sasebo station. Luckily I had a JR North Kyushu Rail Pass. But from downtown Sasebo I had to take the local Matsuura Tetsudo Railway from NakaSasebo. Had to climb a steep flight of stairs. I got off at Sempukuji station and went off on foot to find the Meganeiwa. Luckily I do have basic Japanese language skills and was able to ask some locals for directions. After 1 or 2 deadends I finally sighted the Glasses Rock. It was an awesome sight. A bit of a walk though, and no English signage to guide you. Maybe next time I'll just take a taxi from Sempukuji.

Saikaibashi Park, a sprawling 37-hectare park in Nagasaki Prefecture, is renowned for its stunning cherry blossoms and picturesque coastal views. The park features a wooden playground where kids can play while adults relax on the grass and take in the breathtaking scenery. Visitors can also enjoy activities like sledding down a hill with rented toboggans.
We went on a rainy day and had a blast! Make sure to park on the 3rd entrance if you're coming from Sasebo. The first entrance is on the North side of the bridge on the right. The second entrance is on the left side after you cross the bridge. And the third entrance is around the corner. We didn't use the third entrance and it was a long hike out, uphill carrying both kids after we were done playing. we had to hike back to the second park entrance. This was right before the kids nap, so I recommend you plan your parking appropriately. The big green slide is 300 yen to use. I'm not sure if it's per use or unlimited use, but we paid 300 yen and used it four or five times each. this was the only thing I found that we needed to pay for. There a few snacks and vending machines around, but we did not use those for this trip. Took us about 35 minutes from Sasebo on the non-toll road. Tolls back are 260 yen at this time. Scenery is beautiful and we look forward to going back again to enjoy the park more.

A gorgeous park full of sakura and breathtaking views. It also has some beautiful views of the Saikai bridge and Shinsaikai bridge. If you have little kids, there are playgrounds as well.

Beautiful views. There are two bridges that can be seen from the pedestrian bridge. You can take many photos and admire the views. Looking around is interesting enough even if it would only last some minutes (or more depending on you). There’s a curfew for passing the bridge. There’s a shop and a ceremony hall on the way if you come from the Saikai products center side of the road. Didn’t have time to explore much other than the view of the bridges but there are many lookout points and the park seems bigger than upon initial seeing.
