Located in Hirados Kagamigawacho district, the St. Francis Xavier Memorial Church offers stunning views of neighboring temples and the surrounding town. The church is named after the first Jesuit missionary to come to Japan and stands as a testament to the history of Christianity in the region. Despite being unable to enter at this time, visitors can admire its beautiful architecture from outside and peek through two windows for a glimpse of its interior.
Beautiful historical Catholic Church devoted to Francisco Xavier. Gorgeous building exterior and beautiful interior. A must visit for Catholic believers and tourism.

159 steps up to reach the church. The outside is nice but the inside is quite small.

Must place to visit as the historical site in Hirado. Fact that this Buddhist temple assisted in hiding Christians during their persecution in the Edo and early Meiji era is less known.

Beautiful view of the Hirado castle and the ocean. The church is rather on the small side. Nothing really there to see.

Tabira Catholic Church is one of the many churches on Hirado Island, built after the Meiji Restoration in 1868 when the ban on Christianity was lifted. The church's beautiful brick exterior showcases a blend of Japanese and Western architectural styles. It has a rich history dating back to the time when Christianity spread in Japan, and it maintains its significance as a place of worship.
It's a special brick church with very artful looking from all side. I only stay at the outside as there were some events going on in the church. Please keep in mind this is a church, not a tourist building. If you ever visit here, please respect the church's rules and don't go inside unless you're praying or invited to. Look carefully at the roof and you will see some Japanese architecture details mixed with a western-style building.

Nice stop. The stained glass windows are beautiful. No photos allowed inside but postcards are available if you leave a donation.

Famous catholic church in nagasaki. Its our 2nd visit here. 1st time we went, we couldn’t get inside because something was being repaired. Not allowed taking picture inside the church. Sacred place🙏😊
Mats O — Google review
The external structure of the church is beautiful. It shows the age of the church. I heard the stained glass windows are beautiful. Sadly, we couldn't go inside because the church is scheduled for rennovation. Giving 4 stars so that I can change this to 5 stars when I do get to see the beauty inside.
Jude M — Google review
It is beautiful and the church looks like very old but well preserved and maintained. It located on hilltop overlooking the hirado street.

Miura Catholic Church, established in 1899 and relocated to its current spot in Miura-cho in 1931, features a stunning white Gothic-style exterior. Perched on a hill overlooking National Route 35 just outside Sasebo Station, the church offers a peaceful and solemn environment. Visitors can enter from the right side of the building to admire its neo-gothic architecture and traditional Japanese wooden flooring.
Very beautiful church conveniently located near Sasebo Station. Gorgeous view from any angle especially on a sunny day.

we came on rainy day and the church was closed. too bad we can not ask permission to enter the church. it was located on a higher land so from infront we need to climbed several sets of steep stairs. from the outside it is a small beautiful church.
Lenny L — Google review
Visited during winter, 2020. The main entrance is located on top of a hill, which is accessible via a flight of stairs. Church was peaceful and queit, with a clean and solemn environment. You have to take off your shoes to visit the church as it has traditional japanese wooden flooring. Good place to visit in Sasebo.

Beautiful church up on the hill.
Frank S — Google review
The church is considerably near Sasebo Station, around 5-10 minutes of walking. You have to climb around 3 floors worth of stairs to reach the entrance. The inside is clean and neat, to be expected of any Japanese location. Nothing you can't see in any other Catholic church. The stained glass isn't that special. If you want to take a picture of the whole church, you have to cross the street on the other side. Quite interestingly, I think it kind of looks a bit similar to that castle which you can see on those children's movies ;) Anyway, maybe I'm quite unimpressed because I see all sorts of churches where I live from in Manila

Currently, the Kuroshima Catholic church is undergoing renovations to ensure its safety during earthquakes. Due to this, access to the cathedral is prohibited at the moment. However, prior to these renovations, it was astonishingly constructed in the 1800s and can be found on a secluded island in southwestern Japan. The restoration work is expected to be completed in 2020. After that time, I highly recommend visiting this magnificent cathedral which stands as a testament to both its beauty and historical significance.
Really a beauty on this small island. And seeing how history has been preserved so well. The carvings is beautiful.

I made a reservation in advance, but it seems that some people are free to come in on the day. The inside of the hall has a very quiet and relaxing atmosphere. Although it is difficult to access Kuroshima, it is worth a visit. (Translated by Google) A Catholic church in Kuroshima, Sasebo City. This is a representative church in the village of Kuroshima, which is a component part of the World Heritage Site of Hidden Christians in the Nagasaki and Amakusa Regions. When the Hirado Domain, which ruled Kuroshima during the Edo period when Christianity was banned, closed the ranches on the island and recruited settlers to cultivate the fields, the hidden Christians of the Omura Domain all migrated to Kuroshima. At that time, many hidden Christians migrated to remote islands to escape oppression as much as possible. As they secretly continued their faith for generations as parishioners of shrines and temples, at the end of the Edo period, believers were discovered at Oura Cathedral, and two months later, islanders from Kuroshima began to come forward one after another to confess that they were believers. When Christianity was lifted in the Meiji period, about 600 islanders were baptized, and even today about 80% of the islanders are Catholics. My main destination on this Kyushu trip was Kuroshima. Kuroshima Cathedral was founded by Father Marman, who was appointed to Kuroshima during the Meiji Period. The Romanesque style church made of bricks is beautiful from the outside. The bricks were originally fired on the island, but later, large quantities of bricks were brought in from outside the island and transported by hand to the planned construction site by the islanders. I rented an electric bicycle, but even so, the climb from the port to the church was so steep that my legs were exhausted. I can imagine the hardships of the people who transported the bricks at the time, but at the same time, I think they must have been so happy to be able to practice their faith so freely that they went to such lengths. The interior is also wonderful, with the sanctuary covered in Arita ware tiles, and the wood grain of the ceiling is not natural but hand-carved to make it look as luxurious as possible. The rose stained glass is particularly famous. It is also depicted on Kuroshima souvenirs. The sight of the stained glass colors reflected in the sunshine inside the church was very fantastic. Even now, the island's believers hold masses and funerals in this cathedral, so please be careful not to cause any trouble to the locals. Kuroshima Cathedral has been depicted in many movies, manga, anime, and more. Last year, it appeared in the anime movie "Kimi no Iro" directed by Yamada Naoko. The interior of the school chapel where the main character Totsuko often prayed was modeled after the cathedral, and it also features impressive stained glass. Many fans make pilgrimages to the holy sites of the work, and this time I was one of them. At the Welcome House on Kuroshima, in addition to Kuroshima Shrine and Kozenji Temple, you can also get pre-written goshuin stamps from Kuroshima Cathedral. There are also seasonal goshuin stamps. You might wonder if it's okay to have goshuin stamps at a church, but Godalmighty is the answer (lol). Kuroshima also sells original goshuin stamp books, so if you're a fan of goshuin stamps, please come to Kuroshima.

I don't know anything about religious values, but I was told that it is a very impressive structure, and that the three-story brick structure is very rare. The back side is also dome-shaped. It is a symbolic building of Kuroshima, and it is amazing that something so magnificent could be built on such a small island. (Translated by Google) The cathedral stands out against the blue sky. I visited in mid-December 2023 on Sasebo Quest. It was my first time on Kuroshima, I was at the mercy of quite a steep slope (lol) By renting an electric bicycle, Even though it's supposed to be electric, it's just as tiring as pedaling up a hill on a regular bicycle. It was only downhill near the cathedral, but it was always uphill. It's a steep slope whether you go clockwise or counterclockwise, Instead of going around the cathedral first, I think there will be more downhills if you take the route starting from the temple. (Well, the slope up to the temple is just as ridiculous.) If you have your own bike or bike, it might be a good idea to bring it with you. There are also rental scooters with seats attached to them (as electric bikes). According to the person who rented it, it doesn't climb hills (sweat). There were some people riding buggies, You might be able to rent it somewhere if you look for it, but I couldn't find it through the Kuroshima introduction. Photography is prohibited inside the cathedral, so I wasn't able to take any pictures. Things like crushing riverbeds and putting them in small bottles, There were free souvenirs inside, including a rainbow-colored cell phone strap. I donated 100 yen and took it home. Inside, you can go all the way to the back, which is rare. For the first time, I went near the altar of a church. The stained glass was also beautiful. I wanted to take a photo! ! I thought it was used on a daily basis, There were scriptures, prayer beads, etc. stored in the table area of the seat. I got the impression that the church was cherished by the residents. It has the atmosphere of a living church that is part of everyday life, not just for tourism. If you want to feel such an atmosphere, please visit. Bridge
Ikitsuki Bridge is a must-see attraction that connects Hirado and Ikitsuki Island. The bridge offers stunning views of the coastline and an observation deck nearby provides exceptional panoramic vistas. Visitors can also explore the Ikitsuki Island Museum, which showcases the region's whaling industry dating back to the Edo Period and features a permanent exhibit dedicated to Christians who practiced their religion in secret.
The Ikitsuki Ohashi Bridge, the world's longest truss bridge, spans 400 meters and is a marvel of engineering built in 1991. Designed to withstand wind speeds of up to 50 km/h and tidal currents of 11 km/h, the truss design was selected for its strength, stability, and cost-effectiveness, connecting Ikitsuki Island with Hirado of Kyushu. In Baltimore, Maryland, the Francis Scott Key Bridge, with a 366-meter span, was the third longest truss bridge until it was tragically destroyed in 2024 by a container ship accident. Beneath the Ikitsuki Ohashi Bridge, beautiful Stabit blocks are strategically placed for coastal protection, forming mesmerizing patterns and dissipating wave energy to prevent erosion. The blue color of the bridge harmonizes beautifully with the sky and ocean, creating a picturesque view. The Ikitsuki Strait has a rich maritime history. Since 14,000 BCE, these waters have been bustling with fishing activities. By the 16th century, the narrow strait became a whaling hub, attracting whalers from across Japan. Hirado was Japan's first city to open to foreign trade, welcoming merchants from the Netherlands and Portugal. This openness led to significant cultural exchanges, including the introduction of Christianity. As persecution began, many Christians found refuge on Ikitsuki Island.

The sky blue color of the bridge matches the color of the sea and is very beautiful, and the area around the bridge has been developed as Ohashi Park, with a roadside station selling Ikitsuki specialties and an observatory with a panoramic view of the bridge. Road closures may occur during strong winds and chain restrictions may apply during snowfall. Park
Megane-iwa, also known as Glasses Rock, is a natural wonder located in Hirado, Japan. According to local legend, this 10-meter-tall rock formation was created when a devil-monster kicked a large stone, resulting in two large holes that resemble a pair of spectacles. While the origin story is fascinating, it's more likely that Glasses Rock was formed over time due to erosion.
Such a beautiful sight. Google maps sends you to a strange location where you end up parking next to a sweet older man’s house right outside the entrance to Megane-Iwa. He came outside and told me that it was okay for me to park by his home and walk up the steps to the park. My daughter loved the playground and I love the sights of the “glasses rock”

A free and beautiful public park, it seems the locals have grown weary of such an amazing sight as no one was there at the time. It was quite a peaceful and mysterious experience and there was a shrine/altar and a separate building that was padlocked. I’m sure to keep from people from desecrating the building. It truly is remarkable how nature can create such wonders. Located within a small neighborhood, parking would have to be managed within the small communal streets. I was stopped by a friendly local living just below the sight and was told that I could park just in front of the entrance as there aren’t too many passersby to witness the rocks formation. I went closer to the evening time around 6pm as it was beginning to grow dark which added to its mysterious allure. I wonder what it is like during the day as I plan my return to the rock.

Google map directions weren't as accurate, you could easily by pass the Megane-iwa (I've tried editing the directions on Google Maps to no avail atm, will try another day). The Glasses Rock is kinda hidden by the tall tree in front as you walk on the path. If it's your first time, when you reach the park that will be your destination for the Glasses Rock too.. The shrine is a beautiful serene place just below the Megane-iwa. There's a park for the kids to play as you enjoy learning the rich history of this marvellous place.

Such a beautiful gem tucked away here in Sasebo! Great spot for family photos. I have also taken maternity photos here as well.
Lindsey R — Google review
I went here last April 2019. Had to take the Midori Huis Ten Bosch Ltd Express train from Hakata Station to Sasebo station. Luckily I had a JR North Kyushu Rail Pass. But from downtown Sasebo I had to take the local Matsuura Tetsudo Railway from NakaSasebo. Had to climb a steep flight of stairs. I got off at Sempukuji station and went off on foot to find the Meganeiwa. Luckily I do have basic Japanese language skills and was able to ask some locals for directions. After 1 or 2 deadends I finally sighted the Glasses Rock. It was an awesome sight. A bit of a walk though, and no English signage to guide you. Maybe next time I'll just take a taxi from Sempukuji.

Yamada Catholic Church is one of several churches on Hirado Island, all built after the Meiji Restoration of 1868 when the ban on Christianity was lifted. The church, located in the back of a village, exudes beauty and dignity despite its small size. Built in the Taisho era, it has historical roots connected to the hidden Christians of Amakusa. While visitors may not be able to enter the church, its striking presence is worth admiring from outside.
Divinely inspired. Ask the caretakers about the story behind the butterfly wings that make up the wall panels depicting the 7 sacraments.

(Translated by Google) A church designated as a pilgrimage site for Jubilee. Is the exterior a hybrid of stone and brick? The cherry blossoms are almost in full bloom, so it's a great time. It was my first time visiting Ikitsuki, but it was quite a short drive by car. The bridge has no sidewalks or bicycle paths, and the Hirado side has many ups and downs. The church building is also located on a considerable hill, so I think the only way to get around is by car.
