Nestled just a short drive from Yuzawa, Iwappara Ski Resort is a fantastic destination for winter sports enthusiasts of all skill levels. With its wide, gentle slopes, it's particularly welcoming for beginners looking to hone their snowboarding skills. The resort features an array of ski lifts and even has a dedicated play area for kids, making it perfect for family outings. Visitors can also take advantage of equipment rentals and various dining options on-site to refuel after an exhilarating day on the slopes.
Ski trails are wide and straight, suitable for skills practice. It has 20 trails of different difficulties where everyone from beginners to advanced players can enjoy. Night ski is available till 7pm. Free shuttle bus from and to Echigo Yuzawa Station.

theres not that many runs so it gets boring after skiing here for one day. the runs are all relatively easy and there is only one black run so if you’re more advanced it would be quite boring. the freshly groomed snow is a bit hard and icy but the ungroomed snow is very soft.
Emily — Google review
I loved the service and location. Very much accessible and easy to get around. Nearby location to have fun ski or snowboarding. Rental service was good. I loved the rental gears too. Very neat and fitting. All very good condition gears. Recommended if you are planning to have fun there.
Kuber S — Google review
Unfortunately the snow condition was bad when I went. When I went to the top the vision was unclear making it dangerous Especially the green course on the top, it was so narrow that I had 2 big crash with other people. While I recommend beginners to play at the bottom green zone, I wouldn’t recommend going to the top for beginners
Gigi ( — Google review
Iwappara Ski Resort is a very beginner-friendly ski resort! The view is incredible.
Kevin H — Google review
If you are a beginner, this is a place for you. The terrain is flat and broad. Booked a 2 hour lesson from klook (SGD 190++ for 4 person). Can't believe we know how to ski after the 2 hour lesson!
C___J — Google review
One of the best skiing areas I have been in Japan. There are a variety of different ski lifts to go for different levels of difficulty. The highest peak closes at around 4:30pm which is a safe thing as during winter it gets dark rather early. However, if you still want to ski during the night there is also a night time area where you could ski well into The night. If you choose to go there be sure to bring plenty of warm clothes and gloves and they tend to freeze, yes, freeze as the snow melts on your gloves and freezes again. You can choose to live in one of the few hotels that are on The mountainside (1/4 up The mountain I think) where they provide Japanese style living quarters with public bathrooms and onsen (little small) as well as catering (small portions for those who are used to western portions). On a good day with clear weather the view is simply stunning. And is worth every penny and minute getting there.
Ryan X — Google review
It has a wide slope and good for beginners but the ski and snowboard rental here is not good. It only 2.5 hrs away from Tokyo by car. Good for 1 day trip

Nestled in the picturesque Niigata Prefecture, Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort is a charming destination perfect for families and beginners. With its welcoming atmosphere, this small ski area features 16 trails that cater to all skill levels, including a dedicated kids' snow park. The longest run stretches an impressive 2,000 meters, making it ideal for those looking to enjoy leisurely skiing or snowboarding sessions.
My favorite ski resort so far in Kanto, 4-5 hours away from Tokyo. It's perfect for beginners. Has several resting spaces and more than 2 ski/snowboard schools.
Iloveboule — Google review
Very busy but well organized. Food is a bit pricy but not too bad compared to other facilities. Good quality lifts. It was a fun day
Wayne Y — Google review
Good ski resort for the long covered snow escalator. However getting to and from the slopes is difficult due to oversubscribed buses from Echigo Yuzawa station. We had to wait for an hour each way. Only recommended for absolute first timers requiring the snow escalator.
Hin W — Google review
Had wonderful experience at Yuzawa Nakazato snow. It was our first time experiencing snow and ski, so my children were excited too. We took ski class for 2 hours, most important is the place not too crowded so we can practice skiing well. The price was reasonable too, value for money.

I’ve done snowboarding in some few places in Japan since I’ve started it here but this is one of the nice place and mostly for beginners to intermediate friendly. We went with our lab members and most of them were beginner. But everyone learned how to ski or snowboarding. I’ll recommend you if you’re a beginner or wanna learn. It was actually hot 🥵 though it was snow.

It is great venue to learn or mastered your snowboarding or skiing skills. 1. Have convinience store 2. Have food court 3. Have public toilet 4. Parking lot are big 5. There is rental board 6. Area smoking available 7. Best view both at the bottom or the top 8. Have parking for disability people 9. Accesible by private car or public transportation like Train 10. have many track that suit well from beginner to expert snowboarder.

Not so crowded so very relaxed when skiing. Suitable for both amateur and professional skiers.

Train station
Echigo Yuzawa Station is a convenient stop on the Joetsu Shinkansen line, easily accessible from Tokyo. It's renowned for its natural hot springs and has become a popular ski destination due to its accessibility from Tokyo. The station serves as the main gateway to the area and offers various activities year-round, including hiking, camping, skiing, and snowboarding. Additionally, it's a confluence of the Shinkansen train and local train network in Niigata.
A day trip from Tokyo to explore Yuzawa offers a quick getaway, just 70 minutes from Tokyo Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen Toki. This train is faster than the Tanigawa, making fewer stops along the way. Inside the station is CoCoLo Yuzawa, a plaza with a variety of shops & restaurants offering local specialties. Next to it is Ponshukan Marketplace, specializing in a diverse range of Niigata food & sake — an excellent spot for picking up souvenirs. Just outside the station’s West Exit is Echigo Yuzawa Onsen Street, a charming area lined with shops & restaurants, perfect for experiencing the town’s hot spring culture.
L C — Google review
It's good station, I went to Echigo Yuzawa from Otorii Station, just to see snow. There are many seller here to buy some merchandise
Muhammad P — Google review
I've passed through this station three times now (all in the summer), and while small, it has a lot of stuff to do. There's a huge area with gacha capsule toys, several restaurants, a really long area filled with souvenir shops, and even the sake onsen. Lots of accommodation in the town, and it's really easy to walk around outside on foot (in the summer).
Grant M — Google review
Steam rises from rooftops; snow falls like feathers. Yuzawa hums with laughter and clinking sake cups — the warmth of strangers sharing winter. The train rests here longer, as if to taste the hot spring air. Tourist Tip: Famous ski and onsen town. Station has Sake Museum “Ponshukan” with tasting stations. Excellent overnight for snow or autumn leaves. Try onsen eggs and rice crackers.
Stray L — Google review
Easy access to the snow & ski resorts around. The station has good connectivity through multiple options of bullet trains - Shinkansen, shuttling between Tokyo and Niigata. The station building is accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. Also, there is a beautiful food and souvenirs area inside the station, a convenience store too. Right outside the front of the station is a hot water feet dipping place.
TAHIR C — Google review
Best places to go see snow if you want to go by Shinkansen. The only snow resort next to a shinkansen station. Only 2 hours from Tokyo and very easy to reach to. Also Genbi Shinkansen starts from here to Niigata which is an amazing art-sy kind of Shinkansen so it is fast but every compartment is designed by a different designer so it makes the ride fun as well. Highly recommended to go there. If you don't want to ski and just see snow conveniently from Tokyo, this is easy and faster way to reach. Also the station has souvenir shops and snow gear for rental of you do plan to go skiing. Lockers are available to keep your stuff if you want to just go out for fun. Food is also extensively available. Great place.
Pankaj R — Google review
This station is the confluence of Shinkansen train (bullet train) and also the local train network in Niigata. The local train network in Niigata does not have automated gantry for stored value cards, eg seca. Stored value card can be used to purchase single trip tickets at the machine. When entering to the platforms, passengers need to show the ticket at the ticket counter to receive a stamp. Upon arrival, to present the stamped ticket to the ticket counter and will be collected. So it is still manual. The Shinkansen has its own automated gantry for its tickets. The station has a big area of duty free shopping for the local produce in Niigata. There is also a visitor information centre and postal service. There is a cafe with bakes and also a standing noodle bar. A convenient store is also present.
Trotting H — Google review
Train station with lots of restaurants and shops selling local produce. The ponshukan (sake shop) with many sake vending machines is a popular novelty though kids are not allowed. Free shuttle busses to various ski hotels and taxis are available just outside. A few restaurants too.

(Translated by Google) Touring from Aichi I took the ropeway early in the morning hoping to see the sea of clouds. I took the easy course in a T-shirt, jeans, and rider sneakers... I thought it would just be a walk, but it turned out to be training level 💧 A complete beginner shouldn't just go on a whim in light clothing. I tried my best to get to the Nyonin-do, but it took me an hour and a half. I didn't have the stamina and it was tough. The people I passed on the way back were well equipped and had sturdy shoes. My knees were shaking and I was sweating like crazy. I took a break until my clothes dried. Please warn any lightly dressed amateurs trying to climb. Pizza restaurant
Ristorante pizzeria alpina Yuzawa Plateau is a popular spot that can get crowded quickly, so it's advisable to arrive early. The English menu and friendly staff make the dining experience pleasant. Despite the wait, the quality of food justifies the pricing, especially for flavorful vegetarian pizzas and pasta served warm. The drink selection is impressive for a ski resort restaurant.
Fantastic dining experience for our hungry family taking a lunch break while skiing. The service was friendly and fast. The place was very cosy with stunning views. The food was absolutely delicious! Overall a convenient and memorable experience!
Khairul A — Google review
Surprisingly good italian food on a ski slope AND midway up the mountain. Usually, you will be hard pressed to find decently authentic and good European fare in Japan, let alone up a ski slopes but this one takes the cake. Go for their pizzas.
Vincent C — Google review
Pizza and Italian cousin at almost double price of normal Tokyo price. Within 1 minute walk from Gondola (Gala - Yuzawa Kogen) station at Yuzawa Kogen side. I tried their best pizza, Bishmarck with Maitake mushrooms and…It cost 4500JPY or so and…tasted not bad, but…my colleagues had told me that their pizzas were amazing…but…probably they had other kinds of pizzas there. Mobile signal was super weak there and the staffs know it, but it seemed they hadn’t tried to improve the situation. It took 20 minutes for a customer in front of me to make the payment by Apple Pay because of the mobile network connection and the terrible operation of the staffs. One young female staff was communicative. I am sorry to say, but it seemed that staffs there were not trained well enough for operations even though they don’t seem bad. There is a huge room to improve! I hope they will.
Yushi J — Google review
This place gets crowded, fast. Make sure you get in early and have a table. We had to wait for atleast 40 mins to get in :( English menu is available, staff is friendly. Pricing is decent considering the quality of food is good. We tried a couple of pizza and pasta (vegetarian). All flavorful and served warm. Drink selection is better than I have seen in some of the ski resorts in the region. Recommend visiting if you love Italian food.
Praful B — Google review
Nice restaurant with proper social distancing. But.... The pizza was a joke. I think it is possible. To find better options buying frozen ones for microwave. For what you get, the price is wayyyy too much. Seriously!
Fabio P — Google review
Wow. I second the other reviews about this place being surprisingly good. The pizza was excellent, and so were the salads. I understand they are short on staff so everything is done online (ordering and paying). Would absolutely recommend this place and will come back. It is on the expensive side to be japan though.
Chris B — Google review
Its crazy that one of the best Italian restaurants in japan I have been too, is also on top of a mountain ski resort. Lol The food was great, little overpriced but I can understand because they have to ship the food all the way up there. Scenery was amazing with mountains and snow. Only bad thing is that the lines were long but it was worth it.

Yuzawa Museum of History and Folklore Yukiguni-kan is a small yet fascinating museum located in the heart of Yuzawa. Housed in a traditional gabled farmhouse made of keyaki wood, it was established around 1935 and showcases artifacts from Jomon period sites, old folk tools, equipment, and even a fossil Calyptogena dating back 4 million years.
A must-visit place if you’ve read Kawabata Yasunari’s novel Snow Country. The scenes from the book came vividly to mind — this is the very heart of Echigo-Yuzawa.

A wonderful small museum that tells the history of Yugawa area and part of the livelihood of the Novel Prize Laureate, Kawabata Yasunari. The bestseller, Yukigini (Snow Country) , he wrote was based on his romance with a lady here. The museum has outlined this story and his life of literature. A must go even though you just want to do snow sport.

Yuzawa Fishing Park is a picturesque spot where you can indulge in mountain stream fishing and easily reel in char, landlocked salmon, and rainbow trout. The best part? You can have your catch char-grilled on the spot or even try catching a fish by hand. Located just 10 minutes from Yuzawa IC exit of the expressway, it's an accessible destination open from late April to early November.
Wonderful morning views with fishing and on spot BBQ facilities.
Malik K — Google review
A fun little fishing experience for children. There are small ponds dotted down the length of a river filled with fish. Armed with a bamboo fishing rod and a choice of different baits you try to pull them out of the river. Once you have caught them you can clean and gut them, and then roast them on skewers on a charcoal grill. There is also one pond where you can pay to try to catch the fish by hand. The Fishing Park also has a large BBQ area where you can buy platters of meat, vegetables and noodles and grill them over the flames - no need to bring anything yourself.

The winery harvests grapes from its own farm, where local children also participate in grape picking.

This is a cool little place on the outskirts of Urasa. The buildings are distinctive with their wooden beams and white walls. Rows of grape vines are dotted around the surrounding fields. Head into the main winery building where there is a shop and a tasting counter with an array of the different products they produce. The last time we went the sparkling wine was the pick of the bunch. Down the stairs you can see the barrels in which the wine ages and can also see some of the snow that lines the basement walls to regulate the temperature throughout the summer. Across the little road is the restaurant. An open kitchen with a varied menu and a full wine list of their own wine by the bottle or glass. Always a good meal.

(Translated by Google) Agricoa Echigo Winery is located in the corner of Yashikinomori Park, a 20-minute walk from Urasa Station. Grapes are also grown in the surrounding area, and by this time, in the height of summer, the grapes were ripening. The winery had been renovated and had a beautiful interior, and they had snacks to go with sake and souvenir food from Uonuma, so it was nice to have a better selection of products than I had expected. Our goal was wine tasting (for a fee), but since I was driving, I couldn't drink, so my companion drank some. As a result, I purchased the most expensive Domaine Echigo Merlot red at 6,000 yen because it was rich and had a good scent. I'm looking forward to seeing what Uonuma's wine tastes like. There is also a snow storage room in the basement, so I went to check it out, but it was dark so I couldn't really see the condition, but it seems like the snow is used to keep the temperature low all year round and allow it to mature. When you think of Niigata, you think of sake, but in Uonuma, where there is a difference in temperature between day and night, the grapes are probably good, so the wine is also worth paying attention to. (Translated by Google) This is an art museum located in a corner of Yashikinomori Park. The sports culture exhibition room has exhibits related to baseball, the Olympics, sumo wrestling, etc. On this day, there were exhibits of paintings and photographs by local people related to Hakkaisan, as well as Hakkaisan stones. What was surprising was that there was a Koizumi Yakumo literary reference room. I personally liked the author, so I watched it with great interest. Lastly, I had a cup of Lafcadio Coffee at the Ikebi Café in the lobby. Enjoying coffee while looking at Mt. Hakkaisan is the best taste. Thank you for the meal. As a side note, the harmony between the Matasaburo Kaze statue and the outside scenery was wonderful. GALA Yuzawa Snow Resort is located in Niigata Prefecture, offering a variety of scenic trails for skiing and snowboarding. The resort has its own bullet train station, making it easily accessible from Tokyo Station. With 15 runs and nine lifts, it provides options for skiers of all levels. After a day on the slopes, visitors can relax in the spa area with an onsen and unisex swimming pool.
Went for a day trip from Tokyo during the start-of-spring public holiday. Quite a few trains were nearly complete but could reserve still a place a day in advance. Once at the last stop of Gala, all was very well organised. Bought ski pass in 5 minutes, despite a full train decending just upstairs from the train station. Then ordered online at a kiosk my skis and boots, paid with credit card. Highlighted expert skier but think that related to the settings of the ski bindings, not the skis itself - they were very basic Fischer skis, felt plastic with no stability of edges. Better check for advanced skis if available... Then able to book a cheap locker at another kiosk and drop all stuff and normal shoes. And then take the gondola up, ski sticks you take yourself at exit of top gondola. Very easy all in all! Over 3m of snow, there was a new dump the day before, excellent sun, everything open, the black slopes were not groomed. Very nice for a day!!

This snow/ski resort, is accessible for everyone even you are not doing ski. The ticket price for gondola, not too pricey. But, if you only want to play snow, maybe this is not for you. In fact, you can play snow outside the door near the rental area, with barely no one there. (No need to ride the gondola). There were too many people, and it can be dangerous if you are not aware of the ski-people. Even the parking space was full, and we need to find ourselves a parking spot, 15 minutes walking from the entrance. But still, there are many things to do other than skiing that you can choose. We were so lucky to have a snowfalls! But still, it was a good experience for all of us, especially me, who loves Japan the most.

A very ideal ski resort that is accessible via Tokyo. If you are looking for a nearby ski experience near Tokyo, this is the place. Can get very crowded on some parts but there are also some places here that are not crowded. All in all a good place and would recommend.

If you’re around Tokyo, if you can squeeze it in on your itinerary, please do. This is an amazing place! Winter Wonderland indeed. We went there around February this year. Be prepared with winter clothes. There are rental gears inside, but you can also bring your own. 🤍

Great ski/snowboard resort for beginners to intermediates. Access from Tokyo’s amazing (walk right off the Shinkansen to the resort, pick up your rental gear, then walk to life and go!) Views are beautiful and slopes are not so crowded on weekdays. Try to cafe which is on the edge of the slopes and is a great spot to take a break.

Lots of fun with family. Rent 2 sledges for a family. We spend 3-4 hours over here. If you wanna play snow. You better rent weather proof suit and rubber boots. Train from Ueno to Gala YUZAWA is convenient and easy. Trip start 8am it takes only 1 hr to arrive at Gala YUZAWA. Buy ticket and equipment rental take around 20-30 mins. Gondola will take around 10-12 mins to get the ski mountain. It’s a good place to visit even though you don’t ski. My kid really like to play here.

We had a good experience at Gala Yuzawa Snow Resort. As soon as we arrived at the station, there were people guiding tourists were to buy tickets. On the same floor, there are counters where you get your gondola and lift tickets. If you won’t be skiing, like us, you just need a gondola ticket and you will be able to go up and down as many times as you want during the day. The ride takes just a few minutes. We had big bag packs and left them at the station because it’s the only place where they have big lockers. We rented moon bikes at the top, they give you a helmet with a camera. When the activity ends, they give you a QR code so you can download your video.

GALA is easily accessible via shuttle from Echigo Yuzawa Station at Platform 5 (take the orange line). If you are not a local, don't worry because everything would be available in various languages as well. For example, if you are there to rent anything, forget the fear of being unable to communicate with the staff on what you want including your sizes etc. They have self-selection stations that allows you to pick and choose what you'd like to rent from sets to ala carte if you happen to bring some of your own gear eg. snowboarding wear etc. Prices are very friendly as well, with the snowboarding board, boots and helmet at a friendly 8500 yen, and a half-day, one-day lift ticket at 6500 yen. Be prepared to be greeted by powder snow with a variety of narrow and wide slopes. I was here on a Saturday in January but in the peak afternoon it wasn't that crowded at all on the wide slopes and you could still snowboard comfortably. Be wary though, the slopes may be a little steep for first-timers so do find an area to grasp the basics first. Love the big space, friendly prices and fast services. Cheers GALA!

This is the top station for the dragondola, you reach here after 25 min ride, which you can enjoy the scenery Up here, there’s some food trucks that sell very good snacks. Also one coffee stall The building inside has a very cool fireplace and udon stall, with many seats, very good for resting Also there’s a separate ski lift (payment separate) where you can go up further more , this one is ski lift so there’s no shelter but a lot of fun

Lots of people seem to be mistakenly writing reviews here about the ski resort or about a restaurant.... The title though is Dragondola Station... And oh boy the Dragondola is just phenomenal. 5000 meters and 20 minutes of stunning views of rivers, lakes and mountains. If you're skiing Naeba it's worth the additional 700 yen on top of your lift pass just to ride up and back. Not to mention it connects Naeba to the far superior Kagura resort. Only problem is it closes slightly early at 15:30.

(Translated by Google) This was my third time experiencing the Forest Adventure, but this was my first time trying the "Adventure Course". It was a completely different level from the Canopy Course, and I was nervous at first, thinking, "It's so high!?" In addition to being 15 meters above the ground, the footing was unstable, and I couldn't help but cry out (laughs). But as I got used to it, I gradually became calmer and learned how to use my body and place my center of gravity. People with strong core muscles can do it easily, so people who like muscle training or have an athletic constitution might enjoy it as a little training. Personally, I thought, "It's a good mental training, too." There were times when you had to make calm decisions while high and shaking, and you had to concentrate on your movements... The advanced riders had completely different perspectives and ideas, and it was interesting to see that up close! Anyway, it was a course where I made many new discoveries, not just "crossing". I feel like your potential can be brought out by the people you go with, so I think it would be a lot of fun if you go with friends who like sports.

I have a fear of heights, so I couldn't go with them, so I decided to change the time so that my husband could accompany our two daughters, although they each took separate courses. I'm a photographer who just wanders around below. I thought my older daughter, who usually loves athletics, would be scared, but she went ahead and enjoyed it. Adults landed on the zip slide with too much force, so many of them fell down dramatically. My husband also fell on his back, but it looked like he was enjoying it too. A black T-shirt that you don't mind getting dirty is good... When it gets crowded, you have to wait for the person in front of you to cross, so I recommend going first thing in the morning. There was one staff member for both courses, but they did not provide one-on-one assistance. They will teach you the tricks so you can do the rest on your own. Even the kids who thought they were probably not good at it did their best to clear it on their own. As stated in the guide, the canopy course took 1 hour, and the adventure course took 2 hours, including the time spent waiting for the person in front of me, to complete all 5 courses. There are vending machines, but no shops. The toilet was very clean. A kitchen truck came and there were shaved ice, crepes, etc. There is a trampoline and you can play freely. It's definitely not possible for me, but I think it's a place that both children and adults can enjoy. Nestled in the heart of Japan, Yuzawa Kogen Ski Resort's Nunoba Area is a delightful destination for winter sports enthusiasts and families alike. Following World War II, skiing gained popularity among Tokyo's elite and visitors flocked to resorts like Nunoba. The area has evolved over the years, now featuring a convenient moving walkway designed specifically for novice snowboarders, making it easier to navigate lifts while enjoying the snowy slopes.

(Translated by Google) Latest posts Good news for first-time snowboarders. A moving walkway has been created in Nuoba. Snowboarders only have one foot fixed on the lift, so it is not easy to get on and off the lift. At first, you'll have to practice walking and climbing, but since you can hold the moving pavement in your hands and ride it, you'll quickly become proficient. I'll upload a photo. Then, a lot of flags were put up, making it look colorful and fun. Another good news is that it seems that snowboarding will be allowed for families as well. Starting this year, Nunoba looks like it will become a heavenly slope for beginner snowboarders. Posted a year ago We will take care of you if the ropeway stops due to strong winds. In the past, there were many single lifts here, and there was a queue of people waiting for the lifts. In terms of lift tickets, it is part of Yuzawa Kogen Ski Resort. There are lift tickets available only here, but they are only for beginners. The beginning is a little steep for people at that level, but the range is wide enough that anyone can handle it. This is a practice slope that will help you become a beginner with a sense of stability as you gradually make your line straighter. Nunoba is a ski slope for beginners to advanced skiers, so if you can ski steadily here without falling, you are a great beginner and can go up to the plateau on the low way. As long as you are skiing the beginner course, you will be fine. Let's use the ropeway on the way back. Beginner boarders will want to practice here, and since it's so wide, you'll be able to go next to the leaf dropper for a long distance, so you'll be able to get out quickly. If you do something like that in Gala, you'll definitely get hit on by someone. However, since it's so wide, why not add about 10 meters of compacted snow along the lift, set up mini poles like Naeba and Kagura, and create a free slalom course and a cob line that anyone can use? I feel like it's going to be a popular ski slope. Once you've done this, you can simply remove the mini poles as long as there's no heavy snowfall, and it's a hassle-free process. If you hang one flag at a time at the start, it will be more spectacular. If you create something like that, I think people who come down the Dicentra Mountain Course will not pass by. It's not worth the effort to decorate the side of the ski resort for this lodge in Nunoba. Let's all take better care of Nunoba Slope. Nunoba can be seen from the shuttle bus that runs along the street, so it's important to create an image of a fun ski resort. If so, I think I'll come to Yuzawa Kogen next time. Joetsu Kokusai Ski Resort is an expansive winter destination that caters to all skill levels with its vast network of ski runs, halfpipes for snowboarding and a kids' snow park. The resort boasts a stunning view and numerous restaurants and snack areas for guests to enjoy. While the facilities themselves may appear dated and in need of renovation, they still provide a comfortable stay with buffet options available.
What a wonderful place! This is second time i came here for ski Excellent reception as usual , great view and delicious food. Although the hotel it's a little bit old decor, but still an awesome place to ski. Highly recommended !

We stayed three nights in January. The room is spacious but a bit old and required renovation. Dinner, bkf and lift pass are included. Food variety is limited (no sushi) but when considering the price, it is as expected. The major problem are the ski ground. There is insufficient signage to show direction, and you dont know what level of slope the liftchair will take you to. There are insufficient chairs for you to change boots. Three persons share one locker with only one key. Overall, the hotel is okay for the price charged but the ski facilities needs some improvement.
Tony C — Google review
90% of the time spent on ski lifts than actually skiing. Not worth it. Our legs and knees hurt because none of the ski lifts have footrest like in Europe. If you’re gonna make people sit on ski lifts all day at least have footrest. Most of the ski lifts also don’t have safety bar. It’s a beautiful resort but it has the strangest layout where to get somewhere you need 2 even 3 connecting ski lifts. Worst part other than the non existent footrest is the fact that the ski lifts are extremely slow. Slowest ski lifts in the world. Better to ski somewhere else.
N K — Google review
Too many ski lifts, felt like a lift resort than a ski resort. Should be renamed to Joetsu Mendokusai. Have to pay for parking and also not many food options even though there are tons of resting cabins.
Yaqub M — Google review
I really liked this huge ski with fantastic view. But the signs were not good enough.
David C — Google review
A good resort for beginners and strong intermediate skiers. Very old school. Lifts tend to be a bit slow, and the layout is quite annoying, with a long transition from the front part of the resort and the rather nice hinterland. Scenery is very pretty, the broad layout providing beautiful views. Showing its age but definitely worth a visit.

Nice ski resort with many slopes which are interconnected to the other resort too. They have night skiing too but only for 2 slopes.
Div — Google review
I'm going to be honest. The resort itself is outdated and in need of a remodel. If that does not bother you, it is a nice stay. The buffets are okay. The snow itself was beautiful and the family had a great time sledding and skiing. The beginner hills kind of lead to advanced ones. Hard to learn if it's busy. Overall a fun trip.

Great place for snow sports an hour away from Tokyo. One day pass around 60€ and many restaurants on spot with normal prices. Many slopes and slope ranges

Night ski was fun. In Yuzawa, I prefer playing snowboard at this snow mountain. The ski track is pretty fun, but needed to go up high to the top. Beautiful view. The snow here isn’t powdery though. It’s quite hard. But overall, I had a good time here.

I would say this is the go-to-resort when you are in Yuzawa. Especially if you are advancing from a beginner to intermediate level. The runs here are diverse, fun and easily accessible. It feels like a neighborhood ski resort and perhaps that’s one of the many charms it has. The family and I enjoyed the various FnB venues it has and there’s sufficient signage (and maps) around to keep you informed. It is also relatively inexpensive and there are also options of different rentals to choose from. I think this is the best ski resort in the Yuzawa area.
T F — Google review
Always a favourite, shuttle bus really easy to follow and get to & fro echigo-yuzawa, routes are fun, view is spectacular especially during sunset. Not a huge range of routes, but should keep you busy for a day or two. Loads of rental options. Lots of food options on the slopes Get your passes before hand via kkday e.g. to save quite abit.

I had mixed feelings for this ski resort, some staff were good but some were the worst among Japan in my eyes. It was especially bad when we took a shuttle to the guesthouse near the Hatsukaishi area. When we got off, the shuttle driver stopped us from leaving and said it's the wrong station. Despite being a foreigner, my Japanese level is well enough for all the communication to be in Japanese. I tried to show him the location of our accommodation by using Google map, the driver said "there are so many hotels around the area and I DON'T CARE where you stay" in a really rude way and refused to look at my phone. I was convinced by the driver, what else could you do if a local insisted that you are going the wrong way? So the 9 of us moved our baggage back onto the bus. Later we found out it's the wrong station the driver brought us to, I tried to ask the driver to take us back to the station we initially got off, which was just 5 mins drive away. And he refused to talk to me anymore by saying "I don't understand you" (but I had been talking to him in Japanese like for 5 mins). He just told us to talk to the staff inside the resort centre and ran away with the shuttle. The staff inside told us that we initially got off at the correct stop. And it took us almost another hour to get back to the right place for the waiting time of another shuttle etc. This happened on Jan 23, 2025. Have to say other shuttle drivers and the centre staff were good. But that particular shuttle driver was awful. There are some additional problems with the staff controlling the ski lift. I stayed mostly around the Hatsukaishi area. Most of the time when I or friends fell from the lift while getting off, unlike other Japanese ski resorts, almost all the staff was indifferent to stop or slow down the lift and it was really dangerous. They just made gestures or yelled at you to leave ASAP.

Very nice and beautiful ski resort nearby Gala Yuzawa station. There are so many free shuttle bus to take in every station. You can take the Shinkansen from Tokyo here. Very convenient for transportation. The ski course are so wonderful and huge. People here are not as many as in Gala. And restaurants serves great dishes. So come here and enjoy it!

It is very big ski resort and has many shops and hotels inside or along the line of ski lanes. The lough it self is modern but not as please as Gala. For advance skier is recommend because it more variety and good for tourists as they have many restuarants too.

Maiko Snow Resort is a winter sports destination that offers skiing and snowboarding, equipment rentals, and a hotel with dining facilities. The resort can be reached by taking the Shinkansen and shuttle bus. Despite being busy on weekends, guests have plenty of choices for brand-name snowboard rentals, with around 30 minutes wait time for the gondola. Once at the top, visitors can enjoy hours of snow activities in the soft white powder.
We took Shinkansen + Shuttle bus to arrive Maiko Snow Resort at around 10am, and it was already full of skiiers ~ the snowboard rental provided lots of choice of different brands. As it was a busy weekend, the wait for gondola was around 30min. However, once reaching the top you can spend hours there.

Kevin U — Google review
Very crowded on weekends. It seems that they have very cheap tickets for high school & college kids, so they probably make up 90% of the visitors. You could spend more time waiting in lines than actual skiing/snowboarding. The ticket line took almost 30 mins. The gondola queue also took almost 1 hour, and even longer in the morning. The lowest/main lifts also took about 20-30 mins of waiting in line. The rental at the ski center is very small & not really able to handle the crowd. They just make you to pick your own wear, boots, board and line up carrying everything for 1 hour in a cramped space in order to check them out. Probably best to get rental from the shops just outside the ski center.

Waist deep powder snow. Great for all levels. Lessons available. The lift placement is well thought out. Though they often have some lifts closed for seemingly no reason... Not crowded. Staff at the rental shop we're very unhelpful though. I was disappointed by that..

One of my favorite resorts in Yuzawa. Lots of off piste riding to be found as well as varied ungroomed courses. Good terrain park, cheap tickets not too crowded. Also they have 500 yen nighters! If you need accomodations there are tons of hotels, inns nearby.

Shiozawa Juku Bokushi Street, located on the old road connecting Gunma and Niigata, has been restored to showcase its historical charm. Once a dilapidated postwar shopping street, it has undergone significant improvement with many old shops relocating to new buildings. While there are some tourist-oriented establishments such as cafes, ramen shops, sake breweries, and souvenir stores, the area manages to maintain an authentic atmosphere without being overly touristy.
Enjoying beautiful town walk through the Shiozawa-juku! From the web site; Shiozawa-juku flourished as a post town along the Mikuni Highway connecting Edo and Echigo, and developed as a production center for specialty textiles such as Echigo Jofu (Important Intangible Cultural Property) and Shiozawa Tsumugi (Traditional Craft). It is also known as one of the heaviest snowfall areas in the country.

This is a street on the old road between Gunma and Niigata that has been restored to give an impression of how it looked in the past. It was just a rundown postwar shopping street, so it is definitely improved … also many of the old shops moved into the new buildings. Muikamachi Hakkaisan Ski is a charming ski resort nestled in the picturesque Yuzawa-Ishitaruyama Ski Area of Niigata, Japan. This destination is perfect for both skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts, featuring narrow yet thrilling slopes that cater to those seeking steep descents and moguls. While it may not boast an extensive variety of runs, the available trails are more than sufficient for a satisfying day on the mountain.
Hakkaisan is a mountain I have been wanting to snowboard for many years. We didn’t get a powder day but could imagine how epic it would be on a powder day. We were able to duck into the trees and off to the sides and still find fresh even though it hadnt snowed for a few days. We counted about 30 other people on the mountain.

Not crowded ski resort with maybe not wide variety of slopes, but it was enough for me. Great deal with JR package: shinkansen + local train round trip with a full day ski pass, 50% discount for rentals only for 12000 ¥.
Sasha L — Google review
Recommended by a snowboard instructor in Mitsumata as a go-to place when the weather is bad in Kagura. It was pretty nice and not crowded at all (Sunday today). Just wish that the ropeway was a gondola instead because they let way too many people on during busy periods (there are temperature checks and need to wear a mask or face covers and can't talk). Also, the lifts are very slow. But once you get up to the top, you can enjoy a long run to the bottom.

Nothing attractive about this place: difficult to access by public transport (i.e. 3-4 buses a day from the closest train station, 10 km away), I would say it is not beginner friendly, as there are few slopes, gondola was quite crowed in the weekend. The worst part: they asked us to wear masks and refrain from talking (What?) In the gondola.

The Statue of Kakuei Tanaka, proudly situated in front of Urasa Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen, serves as an empowering symbol. Constructed by local volunteers, this monument not only represents the growth and development of Niigata prefecture but also reflects the admiration and respect felt by the locals for Tanaka's contributions.
Urasa city a great place if u love to feel the Japanese traditional way of living. Paddy field in winter become a stunning village experience. Very beautiful with heavy snowfall that makes all your photos cinematic like quality. I had a very great moment spending 5days here in winter.

(Translated by Google) On Sunday, August 18, 2024, I visited the bronze statue of Kakuei Tanaka in front of the Shinkansen station in Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture. It is also the biggest post-war reconstruction effort, and I saw that there is a bronze statue of the man who made Japan resilient by implementing the Japan Resilience Plan, so I included it in this itinerary. Not only in Japan, but all over the world, and even He has made a great contribution to the Sino-Japanese friendship, and I think his contribution to Niigata Prefecture is truly wonderful😃. When you come to my prefecture, you realize how wonderful the railways and roads are. Then, Joetsu Shinkansen, Hokuriku Expressway, I think the Kanetsu Expressway is wonderful😃. These days, there are too many politicians and government bureaucrats who only care about their own interests, such as vested interests and slush funds. This is what I felt after seeing the snowy Echigo and Uonuma areas, and also seeing the phantom Platform 10 in Nagaoka. In his later years, he was treated as a criminal due to the instigation of prosecutors and the media, but I think it is no exaggeration to say that it was thanks to this man that the Shinkansen network was built all over the country. Urasa Station felt a little lonely, but I feel like it would be nice for more people to visit Echigo in winter. (Translated by Google) I've been going to Uonuma in the winter for about 20 years, but this is the first time I've seen one up close. This is the only place in Niigata Prefecture where there is a bronze statue of Kakuei. In response to petitions from local people, a Shinkansen station was built in Urasa, which had not been planned, and he was known as ``the man who stopped the Shinkansen'', and water came out not only on the main roads in the prefecture but also on small roads and melted the snow. He is a person who has done so much for Niigata that I can't even mention it enough, such as installing the pipes. To people from a certain age onwards, some people may call it God. At any moment, I feel like I can hear "Yo!" and "Ano..." in that sloppy voice. (Translated by Google) There is probably no other more suitable place to install a bronze statue of Kakuei Tanaka (lol). This is because Urasa Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen, which towers in the background, is said to be a ``political station'' that would not exist without his efforts. A "political station" is a station that is built based on the wishes of local politicians, disregarding profitability and convenience. This station, which was built in the former Niigata 3rd ward, which was Mr. Kakuei's election base, will have an average daily ridership of only 1,290 people in 2023, the lowest number of passengers among Joetsu Shinkansen stations. Although the station is pointlessly spacious and magnificent, there is not even a shop on the platform (see photo), and the interior is sparse, so it is often referred to as an ``active ruin station'' by railroad and ruin-related YouTubers. If you come here, I highly recommend that you also visit the station as a set (lol). Now, this bronze statue has one very interesting feature, have you noticed something strange about it? That's right, I don't think the statue feels hot or cold (lol), but for some reason there is a snow guard installed. Apparently, her daughter, Makiko Tanaka, later installed an additional one because she couldn't stand the sight of her father buried in the snow. When you hear all this, it seems like a beautiful story, but even though volunteers put in the money to make it happen, it seems like the local voters are not paying enough attention to the Tanaka family's debt of gratitude. ?” It can also be interpreted as saying. If that's the case, that's pretty rude. Makiko, who was raised as a princess, may have taken it for granted that people would support her, unlike Kakuei, who was a master of ``heart-to-heart''. However, the day finally came when the anger of the local people exploded at Makiko, who ignored the wishes of the supporters' association and often acted recklessly. Makiko was defeated in the 2012 general election for the House of Representatives as the incumbent Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in the Democratic Party of Japan. It is a crushing defeat that does not allow for a revival under the proportional representation quota. In the first place, local voters are not ``vassals,'' and I think Mr. Kakuei would have understood that tension. Each bronze statue has a different history and story, so it was interesting to research it (lol).

(Translated by Google) [The late Mr. Kakuei Tanaka] Attentive, considerate, considerate, and behave in a manner that is respectful and respectful. A person with an outstanding sense of balance. For better or worse, he was a great politician of the Showa era. After this person... There will be no politician better than Mr. Kakuei. Dignity and measure. In these days of distrust of politics, I think today's politicians have a lot to learn from their willingness to make any effort or ingenuity to make things go according to their ideals. I believe that he has left many legends behind with his decisiveness and ability to execute. Mr. Kakuei Tanaka was a unique person who had a great influence on Japan, not only as the prime minister, but also as a person m(_ _)m "Interesting episode" ``I could get from my home in Mejiro, Tokyo at the time to my parents' house in Niigata with just three turns.'' After leaving the Tanaka residence, drive along Mejiro Street for about 10 minutes, then turn once onto the Kanetsu Expressway. After passing through Mikuni Pass and getting off at the Nishiyama Interchange in Niigata Prefecture, turn and turn again. I actually only made three turns during the 220km journey to my parents' house in Niigata! Or so 😅 “Mejiro Pilgrimage” Mr. Kakuei always said, ``Politics is numbers, and numbers are power. And power is money.'' This means that money and power are the means to answering the demands of the electorate. At that time, as many as 400 people visited Kakuei's home in Mejiro, Tokyo every day to ask for a favor. For the local people of Niigata, it seems that the standard itinerary is to enjoy sightseeing in Tokyo by bus and then visit Tanaka's residence in Mejiro. Kakuei was said to have made sure to respond to these petitions. He was a person who was able to give Mr. Kakuei his own kind of consideration, ``even if the result wasn't what the other person wanted, I wanted them to feel like I was listening to them.'' Mr. Kakuei, who always answered ``I can do it'' or ``I can't do it'' on the spot, took about 5 minutes to respond to each request💦 And after 400 petitions were completed, Mr. Kakuei himself decided the order of the petitions and took a commemorative photo at the end. There is a heartwarming story that remains. Mr. Kakuei is so special that a bronze statue stands here. When he returned to Niigata, many supporters had gathered in front of the station. Apparently he remembers people's names and converses with them. I think this memorization technique can be called ``the technique of grasping people's hearts.'' ``Demonstrates excellent ability to control people's hearts even when arrested'' 1976 (Showa 51). In an unprecedented situation, a former Prime Minister was arrested in connection with the Lockheed incident. Kakuei, who disappeared from the media after his arrest, was interviewed by Soichiro Tahara five years later. Mr. Tahara, who said that this interview inspired him to become a political journalist, said, ``His ability to think and take action is amazing. There is no one else like him.Of all the politicians I have ever met, Kakuei Tanaka is without a doubt the most amazing!'' [How to control people's hearts, Part 1] Mr. Kakuei, who placed the most importance on the funeral, said, ``It's okay to be late for the celebration, but be the first to rush to the funeral. It's important to be there for people when they are sad.'' He rushed to the funeral parlor first, openly weeping, and mourned the deceased. A week after the funeral, new flowers were given to the deceased, saying, ``When the flowers wither, the grief of the bereaved family increases.'' [How to control people's hearts, part 2] Mr. Kakuei, who is famous for his skill in using bureaucrats, also had the skills to win over bureaucrats to his side in order to make things run smoothly. For all civil servants at section manager level and above, we track not only their own birthdays and wedding anniversaries, but also their children's birthdays. It seems that he always gave gifts and built a relationship of trust. Furthermore, these words captivated proud bureaucrats. "I'll give the credit to them, and I'll take the blame. Don't show favoritism or criticize them by name. When you scold them, use the word 'sashi'. When you want to praise them, do it in front of the crowd!" As expected m(_ _)m [How to control people's hearts, part 3] The reason why the Tanaka faction, which at one time had 140 members, boasted an iron bond was due to money and status. It is said that Mr. Kakuei gave millions of yen per year to all the members of the Tanaka faction. This is what he said about his political philosophy: "The world is not all black and white. It is not all friends and enemies. There is a gray zone in the middle, and that is the widest one. You will never be able to gain control of the world if you do not master this gray zone!" Mr. Kakuei was loved by people of all ages for his personality, which was both ``pure and cloudy''. At that time, there were apparently many people in Japan who imitated Kakuei's favorite phrase, ``Maasono,'' in a fake voice. I don't think there will ever be another Prime Minister who makes me feel so close to him. Phew~(^o^; I worked hard from books I had and articles on the internet. Was this helpful to you?

Yakushoji is an ancient Buddhist temple with a rich history, belonging to the Chizan school of the Shingon sect. Founded in 1045, it houses intriguing artifacts and relics, including the real head of a headhunter. The temple also has ties to Myanmar's political struggles, as it provided shelter to Ba Maw, a prominent figure in Myanmar's history who sought refuge there for five months.
Buddhist temple where Dr. Ba Maw who used to be main part of Myanmar political struggles under British time. Also Ba Maw is very educated man who can speak English and French and studied in Rangoon and India and later gained master degree from Cambridge University and PhD from French. It's interesting to see the relationship between Japanese and Myanmar and especially how Japanese helped and assist Ba Maw to hide for 5 months in this very quiet and peaceful place. Any Myanmar citizens should visit that place if you come to Minamiuonuma city.

(Translated by Google) I visited there because I heard there was a large Katsura tree. The temple is located on a somewhat high place, and you can clearly see the Katsura tree from the gate. It's definitely a big tree. When you approach it by climbing up the stone steps, it is a mysterious large tree that looks like multiple trees fused together. The stone monument says 2,000 years ago, but I don't think that much time has passed. However, it must have continued to stand for hundreds of years, overlooking the mountain village of Echigo. It made me feel the flow of eternal time. Also, the leaves of the Katsura tree are heart-shaped. It's a nice big tree. It is known that Burmese Prime Minister Ba Maw defected to Japan in August 1945 and was sheltered at this temple by the 77th chief priest, Katsutsu Tsuchida. The main hall was rebuilt in 1783, and the precincts also have a nice rustic feel. There is still a new Fukujudo in the north, and is it Daikokuten? was enshrined. Above all, the Katsura tree, which is said to be 2,000 years old (some say 250 years old, some say 400 years old), is famous and wonderful. There is a monument in the precincts that is said to be the best in Japan, but it has not been certified. There is no doubt that it is the best in Niigata Prefecture. Apparently there are paintings by Tsuguharu Fujita and Millet in the treasure hall, but unfortunately it seems to be closed at the moment. The principal image of Yakusho-ji Temple is Yakushi Nyorai. It is said to have been founded in 1045 by the monk Zenju, but temple legend has it that in 1780, a bird carrying a lit candle from a visitor dropped it onto the tiled roof of the main hall, causing the temple to burn down. The temple has suffered two fires and all ancient records have been lost, so the details are unknown. The current main hall was subsequently built in 1783. From the end of the Edo period to the early Meiji period, the seventh head priest of Yakusho-ji Temple, Osaki Gyochi, greatly promoted the temple's fortunes. It is said that immediately after World War II, Prime Minister Ba Maw of Burma (now Myanmar) went into exile and, with the help of volunteers, hid at Yakushoji Temple until 1946. In December of that year, he turned himself in to the Allied occupation forces and was subsequently pardoned and returned to Japan. One of the best parks in the area. A giant stage provides shade in summer and is a popular place to set up base for the day. There is a big pond and a few streams flowing around. The bbq area has brick BBQs which can be reserved as well as a sink for washing. There are a selection of different climbing frames for kids and some trampoline-like bouncy cushions. There are also a few giant balls around which kids can borrow and play with. Masses of space to run around and tire out little legs. There is an interesting little museum in the far corner. (Translated by Google) My great-grandfather trained at Hakkaisan, and the shrine gave him a sacred object, which he took from the family and made into a branch family. My great-grandfather was a Shinto priest at his family home, and since my grandfather passed away, there is no successor, so the family is currently closed. I left my hometown to get married, but I am very happy to receive reviews from you all. When my grandfather was still active, my family and I would visit the shrine every year from late August to early September, also for family business matters. Due to the nature of our work, we avoided visiting during busy periods, so I will post about things other than events. Safe childbirth, Shichigosan, unlucky years, illness, prayers for success, happy marriage... there are many things that we cannot avoid on the journey of a long life. When you are troubled or sick, when you are at a crossroads in life... Visiting the shrine surrounded by pure air will allow you to reaffirm the vitality of human beings! You will be able to become one with nature and discover your true self and hints for life. The priest, head priest, and other related personnel are calm and collected and listen carefully to what you have to say. Because you can come into contact with nature, it can be enjoyed by people living in big cities, as well as by people of other religions, as long as they respect nature. There is also a gondola station a short drive from the shrine. It is also recommended as a base for those who want to see the mountain scenery. For lunch, please use the nearby soba restaurant. Due to the mountain climate, we recommend visiting from Golden Week to early October. It is not a well-known shrine that is featured in the media, but it is a quiet and relaxing space. You can get away from your busy daily life and become one with nature both in body and mind, so please speak gently to the forests, flora and fauna of Mt. Onsen. I think you will feel refreshed when you return home. Don't be so tense because it's a sacred mountain, but rather come here with a relaxed attitude. Sorry for the long and disorganized post. Mountains
Mt. Makihata is a remote mountain with an elevation of 1,967 meters that offers marked hiking trails and breathtaking views. Beyond the forest limit, visitors can hike along the ridgeline and enjoy panoramic vistas of the famous 100 famous mountains from its peak. The summit can be identified by a mountain sign at Mikiya, while the real peak can be reached by walking towards Ushigatake from Cologne.
We started our hike to Mount Markeyhatha around 11:00 a.m. after finding a convenient parking spot for 500 yen per day. The hike was quite challenging, with steep sections and sunny weather throughout, but it made for a rewarding experience. The trail had a total of 7 or 8 stations, and we started from the 3rd station. After some tough but enjoyable hiking, we reached our shelter at around 5:00 p.m. There's a free mountain refuge where you can stay overnight, and though small, it comfortably accommodates several hikers. The shelter had two floors, and after having some food, we rested early around 6:00 p.m. The next morning, we woke up at 4:00 a.m. to a breathtaking view of the stars. After a short 30-minute hike, we reached the summit of Mount Markeyhatha just in time to witness the sunrise. It was absolutely mesmerizing—one of the most beautiful sunrises I’ve ever seen. I highly recommend this hike, especially for the sunrise views, but would advise avoiding the rainy season as the trail can become wet and muddy. Overall, an incredible experience and one of the best hikes I've done so far!

When I went hiking in October, the weather was clear all the way up to Gunma Prefecture, but when I looked up at Mt. Tanigawa just before the Kanetsu Tunnel, I saw waterfall clouds flowing from the Niigata Prefecture side, and when I came out of the tunnel, Niigata Prefecture was covered in mist and drizzle. However, I put on my rain jacket and started walking in the drizzle, and as I passed through the forest, the mist thinned and the sunlight began to shine. I broke through the mist and looked back, and below was the most amazing sea of clouds I have ever seen, and above was a magnificent view of autumn leaves. On this day, I also saw a rare white rainbow made of mist instead of raindrops. 👌 From here, it was a tough climb, but the view was spectacular when I climbed up to Mt. Makihata. I further climbed to the summit sign of Mt. Makihata and enjoyed the view, but it was the first time I had seen such an amazing sea of clouds, and the Niigata side was all sea of clouds. I enjoyed a blissful traverse from the summit sign of Mt. Makihata to the highest point of Mt. Makihata, and then to Ushigatake. Further ahead, from the summit of Ushigatake, I enjoyed the sea of clouds on the opposite side to the one seen from Mt. Makihata. Mt. Hakkai, Mt. Echigo-Komagatake, and Mt. Nakanodake pierced through the sea of clouds, also a spectacular view. Everyone I passed at Mt. Makihata that day was high and happy from the spectacular view of the sea of clouds. I thought the front would definitely be different, and when I looked at the satellite photo, I saw someone coming from the back, so I guess the entrance is at the back. That's what I thought, and I was right. The parking lot has a long, vertical structure that is difficult for first-time visitors to understand without an information board. I watched the Youtube explanation video posted on the homepage beforehand, but it was terrible. This means that in order to access the easiest trail to the top(from Shiori pass), you only have a window of 4 months and a few weeks. All other routes are harder and longer. The drive is also not very easy, especially for those who are not used to driving in the mountains. 2. Trails: All the 3 peaks of Echigosanzan (Three mountains of echigo - Nakadake, Echigo-komagatake and Hakkai) are sacred mountains, and sacred mountains are not supposed to be an easy trek. The sacred mountains are traditionally for Shugyou (Ascetic training, Sadhana), and not sightseeing. The trail from Shiori pass is considered the easiest, but the trail becomes quite steep near the summit, and the trek can become unpleasant in the oppressive heat. 3. Crowds/Finding a parking space: Shiori pass is more famous for its views of Takigumo or "Cloud Waterfall". The fog in the lakes nearby accumulates and travels up through the mountains, and it looks like a huge and stunning waterfall. The fog can be seen at daybreak, which means that a lot of people arrive late at night, and due to limited parking space, finding a parking spot can be a problem. My suggestion is to plan your trek on a weekday. I left my place in Tokyo at 0100 in the morning and arrived at Shiori pass at 0445, after a 3.5 hour drive. Get down at the Koide exit on Jouetsu expressway, drive on the route 352 for 40 minutes or so before arriving at Shiori pass. The parking lot was half empty on a Thursday morning, so parking was not a problem. I was lucky enough to get a splendid view of the "sea of clouds" both from the parking lot and from some points early in my trek. It took me a little over five hours to cover the 7.2 km distance from the parking lot to the summit. The first half of the ascent from parking lot to Oguroyama is a relatively easy trek, but it gets steep after that and there are ugly rocks to climb before reaching the summit. The view from the top is spectacular, but it will largely depend on the weather. People who are interested in enjoying splendid panoramas in good weather should check the weather forecast regularly before planning a trip to this mountain.

I ran out of gas at Dogyoyama, and was pulled into the trace and headed towards Edori Pass. At the top of the mountain, the weather cleared and the wind subsided, allowing us to enjoy the best views. It was a very easy hike since the last one we climbed was Mt. Hiragatake, which was in a desolate state! What about the remaining snow? So I brought crampons with me, but there was almost no snow on this mountain, so I didn't have to use them. Should I use crampons right below the summit? I thought about that for a moment, but since I followed the kick steps of my predecessors, I climbed the summit without any problems! The Chojagahara Archaeological Museum is a charming destination that offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich archaeological history of the Chojagahara Site and the Itoigawa Region. This small yet captivating museum showcases an impressive array of artifacts, many of which date back to the Neolithic era, including exquisite jade beads, ancient stone tools, and beautifully crafted pottery. The exhibits are thoughtfully presented in both Japanese and English, making it accessible for all visitors.

(Translated by Google) 2024.10.30 The Chojagahara Ruins are designated as a national historic site. Approximately 3 times the size of Tokyo Dome, It has an area of 13.6ha. The remains of a large village from the middle of the Jomon period (5,000 to 3,500 years ago) spread out in the center of this site, and are also known as a production and trading base for stone axes and jade beads. Although the area that has been excavated so far only accounts for about 3% of the entire ruins and 10% of the village ruins, the general outline of the ruins has been grasped from the remains of many dwellings and a huge amount of excavated items. In the ruins park, buildings such as the pit dwelling have been restored, and various hands-on learning activities can be held. I didn't have much time, so I only toured the inside of the building. The archaeological museum exhibits Jomon pottery, stone tools, and jade beads. It was very good. 🤗 Why not try it yourself? Admission is charged (300 yen), and there is also a shared ticket with the Fossa Magna Museum. Various ruins are introduced, but I think the main one is the Chojagahara ruins. The excavation survey has only progressed to about one-tenth of the total, but even so, it seems that many pieces of Jomon-style pottery have been unearthed, including fragments of the characteristic flame pottery, so I'm looking forward to future research. I think the exhibits are of high value overall, but after visiting the Fossa Magna Museum, I can't help but feel that the exhibition methods are rather plain and lack visual impact. I don't know if young children will be interested in it, but I think it's worth seeing if you're interested in ruins. There was a dead-end road, so I took a detour. The archeology museum was very nice. It is said that only 10% of the ruins have been excavated so far, so there are great expectations for future research. Itoigawa is the birthplace of magatama excavated throughout ancient Asia, which shows the scale of distribution both domestically and internationally, and I believe that its importance is a treasure not only for Itoigawa City but for all of Japan. Geographically, it makes sense that the Jomon people were able to process highly hard magatama beads, that they had a surplus labor force, and that they had a relationship with Izumo and Suwa, where Nunagawa Hime was the center. It can be seen that there was a united kingdom of Izumo, Koshi, and Suwa of the Kunitsukami lineage that opposed the ancient Yamato dynasty. It was deeply moving to see glimpses of a huge kingdom that spanned from the Jomon period to the entire ancient period by chasing jade. Jade is also difficult to find. It makes me think about how ancient people identified and processed it, and what kind of spirituality the claims of each village contained in addition to the authority material. I drew a book about Suwa, but I would like to consider writing another one with a story centered around Itoigawa. https://www.amazon.co.jp/Understanding the history of Suwa Taisha Shrine and the structure of Japanese political festivals in 2 hours - Yasu Bunko - Keisuke Yajima - ebook/dp/B0BKF225SN (Original)

Noborikawa Riverside Park offers a soft ground for camping, but campers should be cautious of small holes and gravel areas. The park features separate toilets for men and women, as well as wheelchair accessibility. It provides a great panoramic view of Mt. Kinjo and Mt. Makiki, with nearby amenities such as a 7-Eleven and day-trip hot spring facilities.

I'm from Chiba Prefecture, but this is the first time I've seen such a beautiful and wonderful river park. The kids loved it too, and they played in the river two days in a row. Leave it cleaner than when we arrived! The only things you should leave behind are footprints and words of gratitude. I hope people will abide by the rules and continue to use the park for a long time to come. Tsukimizu-no-Ike Pond is a small but charming pond located in the forests of Shimohayakawa region. Despite its small size, the trails around the pond offer delightful forest walks, especially during May when wisteria vines bloom, adding a beautiful touch of violet to the surroundings.
Very small but picturesque pond in the forests of Shimohayakawa region. The trails around the pond take you past dozens of massive boulders, remnants of the huge landslide that created this pond. Definitely worth a visit if you enjoy forest walks. In May the wisteria vines around the pond bloom, adding a nice splash of violet to the forest. This pond seems to get a lot of salty reviews from people who either don't appreciate nature or don't understand how that flowers don't always bloom when we want them to. Don't pay attention to the haters, it's definitely worth stopping by. Note: There is a tea house by the pond, but it is sadly no longer in use. The public restroom near the entrance is reasonably maintained and open throughout the season. The pond is inaccessible in winter due to snowfall, but you could probably get there with snowshoes if you really wanted to.

Going to the north side leads to wisteria trellis and huge rocks, but the road condition is quite bad. It seems like you can go around the pond if you try hard, but I don't know if it's worth it... One of the giant rocks, Kodateiwa, has an observation deck, but it's not really something you can climb. I regain my composure and head towards the front, but the shop is closed and there is only a desolate atmosphere. Contrary to the description on the information board that says "highly transparent and cold", the water surface is quite murky...huh? If this is the case, the moon will not be reflected on the water surface, so in that sense, it may be a pond where the moon is never seen. ? . Sakado Castle Ruins, located on a mountaintop, offer scenic walking trails and panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. The Shirosaka course provides an easy climb with winding steps and stairs. Despite the strenuous uphill climb, visitors are rewarded with beautiful autumn leaves and stunning vistas from the top. The castle's historical significance is evident as it withstood a siege during the Otate Rebellion. However, climbing in summer is considered dangerous due to exposure to direct sunlight and steep slopes.

We started climbing at 5 o'clock, but there were people coming down one after another, and there were quite a few people climbing behind us as well. The course is well maintained and has good visibility. You can see the Minami Uonuma basin. Most of the ridgeline is uphill, and it's quite a worthwhile climb. Although it is a low mountain at 634m, it is a good mountain where you can enjoy the scenery and the slopes. We reached the top in about 45 minutes. Hakkaisan was visible to the north. It's quite spacious, so you can eat your bento lunch slowly. When I talked to the locals at the top, they told me that it took about 30 minutes to get to the top, and for people who were even faster, it took them 25 minutes. Descending from the Shirasaka course. The slope is quite steep and it feels like it's going down all at once. If you are aiming for a mountain castle, it is more interesting to climb from here as there are castle ruins here and there. This took just under an hour. (Translated by Google) My important tidy spot. It takes just over an hour round trip to climb 634m along the ridge, but it is quite a demanding hike. The scenery and the wind at the top of the mountain are soothing every time. You can climb the mountain with just the right amount of effort and a sense of accomplishment, wearing only jogging clothes. It gets quite crowded after 9 o'clock on weekends, so I recommend visiting on weekdays or early in the morning. There are three parking lots, and the road to the castle has stairs, making it cheaper to walk. The shrine of Fuji Gongen is enshrined at the site of the main enclosure, and the enclosure and moat remain well. This is a place that can be called a mountain castle. It is a scenic spot overlooking the Uonuma Basin from the main enclosure ruins. Mountain peak
Iijisan, located near Minamiuonuma City in Niigata Prefecture, is a majestic mountain offering breathtaking views. It is a dormant volcano with an independent peak resembling Mt. Fuji, and it's one of Niigata's top 100 mountains. The mountain has four trails, with the one starting from Iwahara Ski Resort being a popular choice due to its short distance and scenic views throughout the climb.

I want to come again. Because the rice is delicious. Well, after going down the mountain, I think I'll sweat it out in the mountain hot springs and have lunch at Kariki. There are four mountain trails, but we chose the one that starts from Iwahara Ski Resort. Historical landmark
Urasa Castle Ruins are conveniently located near Urasa Station, with a 10-minute walk to the mountain trail entrance. Information signs along the way provide guidance for visitors. The trail takes about 20 minutes to reach the main fort, with no steep climbs or dangerous areas. While lacking stone walls, the main wall's steep cliffs offer a spectacular sight. In early spring, the area is adorned with beautiful wildflowers like Katakuri, adding to its charm.
(Translated by Google) Urasa Castle is located almost right in front of Urasa Station, and it takes about 10 minutes to reach the entrance to the mountain trail. Information signs have been installed at important points for the convenience of visitors. There were no particularly steep climbs or dangerous places, and it took about 20 minutes to reach the main fort. Although there were no stone walls, the steep cliffs of the main wall were spectacular. If it's a slight incline, you can climb it by crawling, but the cliffs of Urasa Castle are very difficult to climb. Double Horikiri can only be seen when the grass dies, but since we live in an area with heavy snowfall, I think April to early May is the best time to see it. The view from the main castle is good, and you can see Osaki Castle and Rokumanki Castle in the distance, and beyond that you can see Sakado Castle, which was the base of the Ueda Nagao clan. During the Otate Rebellion that occurred after the death of Uesugi Kenshin, he became part of Kagekatsu Uesugi's sphere of influence and intercepted the Hojo clan's army that came as reinforcements for Kagetora Uesugi.
