GALA Yuzawa Snow Resort is located in Niigata Prefecture, offering a variety of scenic trails for skiing and snowboarding. The resort has its own bullet train station, making it easily accessible from Tokyo Station. With 15 runs and nine lifts, it provides options for skiers of all levels. After a day on the slopes, visitors can relax in the spa area with an onsen and unisex swimming pool.
Went for a day trip from Tokyo during the start-of-spring public holiday. Quite a few trains were nearly complete but could reserve still a place a day in advance. Once at the last stop of Gala, all was very well organised. Bought ski pass in 5 minutes, despite a full train decending just upstairs from the train station. Then ordered online at a kiosk my skis and boots, paid with credit card. Highlighted expert skier but think that related to the settings of the ski bindings, not the skis itself - they were very basic Fischer skis, felt plastic with no stability of edges. Better check for advanced skis if available... Then able to book a cheap locker at another kiosk and drop all stuff and normal shoes. And then take the gondola up, ski sticks you take yourself at exit of top gondola. Very easy all in all! Over 3m of snow, there was a new dump the day before, excellent sun, everything open, the black slopes were not groomed. Very nice for a day!!

This snow/ski resort, is accessible for everyone even you are not doing ski.
The ticket price for gondola, not too pricey.
But, if you only want to play snow, maybe this is not for you.
In fact, you can play snow outside the door near the rental area, with barely no one there. (No need to ride the gondola).
There were too many people, and it can be dangerous if you are not aware of the ski-people.
Even the parking space was full, and we need to find ourselves a parking spot, 15 minutes walking from the entrance.
But still, there are many things to do other than skiing that you can choose.
We were so lucky to have a snowfalls!
But still, it was a good experience for all of us, especially me, who loves Japan the most.
A very ideal ski resort that is accessible via Tokyo. If you are looking for a nearby ski experience near Tokyo, this is the place. Can get very crowded on some parts but there are also some places here that are not crowded. All in all a good place and would recommend.

Great ski/snowboard resort for beginners to intermediates. Access from Tokyo’s amazing (walk right off the Shinkansen to the resort, pick up your rental gear, then walk to life and go!)
Views are beautiful and slopes are not so crowded on weekdays. Try to cafe which is on the edge of the slopes and is a great spot to take a break.
Lots of fun with family. Rent 2 sledges for a family. We spend 3-4 hours over here. If you wanna play snow. You better rent weather proof suit and rubber boots.
Train from Ueno to Gala YUZAWA is convenient and easy.
Trip start 8am it takes only 1 hr to arrive at Gala YUZAWA.
Buy ticket and equipment rental take around 20-30 mins.
Gondola will take around 10-12 mins to get the ski mountain.
It’s a good place to visit even though you don’t ski.

We had a good experience at Gala Yuzawa Snow Resort. As soon as we arrived at the station, there were people guiding tourists were to buy tickets. On the same floor, there are counters where you get your gondola and lift tickets. If you won’t be skiing, like us, you just need a gondola ticket and you will be able to go up and down as many times as you want during the day. The ride takes just a few minutes. We had big bag packs and left them at the station because it’s the only place where they have big lockers. We rented moon bikes at the top, they give you a helmet with a camera. When the activity ends, they give you a QR code so you can download your video.
GALA is easily accessible via shuttle from Echigo Yuzawa Station at Platform 5 (take the orange line). If you are not a local, don't worry because everything would be available in various languages as well.
For example, if you are there to rent anything, forget the fear of being unable to communicate with the staff on what you want including your sizes etc. They have self-selection stations that allows you to pick and choose what you'd like to rent from sets to ala carte if you happen to bring some of your own gear eg. snowboarding wear etc.
Prices are very friendly as well, with the snowboarding board, boots and helmet at a friendly 8500 yen, and a half-day, one-day lift ticket at 6500 yen.
Be prepared to be greeted by powder snow with a variety of narrow and wide slopes. I was here on a Saturday in January but in the peak afternoon it wasn't that crowded at all on the wide slopes and you could still snowboard comfortably. Be wary though, the slopes may be a little steep for first-timers so do find an area to grasp the basics first.

Echigo Yuzawa Station is a convenient stop on the Joetsu Shinkansen line, easily accessible from Tokyo. It's renowned for its natural hot springs and has become a popular ski destination due to its accessibility from Tokyo. Additionally, it's a confluence of the Shinkansen train and local train network in Niigata.
A day trip from Tokyo to explore Yuzawa offers a quick getaway, just 70 minutes from Tokyo Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen Toki. This train is faster than the Tanigawa, making fewer stops along the way.
Inside the station is CoCoLo Yuzawa, a plaza with a variety of shops & restaurants offering local specialties. Next to it is Ponshukan Marketplace, specializing in a diverse range of Niigata food & sake — an excellent spot for picking up souvenirs.
Just outside the station’s West Exit is Echigo Yuzawa Onsen Street, a charming area lined with shops & restaurants, perfect for experiencing the town’s hot spring culture.

It's good station, I went to Echigo Yuzawa from Otorii Station, just to see snow. There are many seller here to buy some merchandise
I've passed through this station three times now (all in the summer), and while small, it has a lot of stuff to do. There's a huge area with gacha capsule toys, several restaurants, a really long area filled with souvenir shops, and even the sake onsen. Lots of accommodation in the town, and it's really easy to walk around outside on foot (in the summer).
Steam rises from rooftops; snow falls like feathers. Yuzawa hums with laughter and clinking sake cups — the warmth of strangers sharing winter. The train rests here longer, as if to taste the hot spring air.
Tourist Tip:
Famous ski and onsen town. Station has Sake Museum “Ponshukan” with tasting stations. Excellent overnight for snow or autumn leaves. Try onsen eggs and rice crackers.
Easy access to the snow & ski resorts around. The station has good connectivity through multiple options of bullet trains - Shinkansen, shuttling between Tokyo and Niigata. The station building is accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. Also, there is a beautiful food and souvenirs area inside the station, a convenience store too. Right outside the front of the station is a hot water feet dipping place.
Best places to go see snow if you want to go by Shinkansen. The only snow resort next to a shinkansen station. Only 2 hours from Tokyo and very easy to reach to. Also Genbi Shinkansen starts from here to Niigata which is an amazing art-sy kind of Shinkansen so it is fast but every compartment is designed by a different designer so it makes the ride fun as well. Highly recommended to go there.
If you don't want to ski and just see snow conveniently from Tokyo, this is easy and faster way to reach. Also the station has souvenir shops and snow gear for rental of you do plan to go skiing. Lockers are available to keep your stuff if you want to just go out for fun.
Food is also extensively available. Great place.
This station is the confluence of Shinkansen train (bullet train) and also the local train network in Niigata. The local train network in Niigata does not have automated gantry for stored value cards, eg seca. Stored value card can be used to purchase single trip tickets at the machine. When entering to the platforms, passengers need to show the ticket at the ticket counter to receive a stamp. Upon arrival, to present the stamped ticket to the ticket counter and will be collected. So it is still manual. The Shinkansen has its own automated gantry for its tickets.
The station has a big area of duty free shopping for the local produce in Niigata. There is also a visitor information centre and postal service.
There is a cafe with bakes and also a standing noodle bar. A convenient store is also present.
Train station with lots of restaurants and shops selling local produce. The ponshukan (sake shop) with many sake vending machines is a popular novelty though kids are not allowed. Free shuttle busses to various ski hotels and taxis are available just outside. A few restaurants too.

Kagura Snow Resorts is a popular ski destination located in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. It is known for its high-altitude location, offering quality snow and non-piste slopes from November to late May. The resort is interconnected with Mt.Naeba and Kagura by Japan's longest cable car 'DRAGONDOLA'. With backcountry trails, chair lifts, rentals, and a ski school, it provides a range of amenities for visitors.
There is a lot of snow and the snow quality is good due to the high altitude. Depending on the climate of the year, there is still snow in May, so skiing and snowboarding can still be enjoyed. The resort is connected to other nearby ski resorts, and you can cross the mountain to access other ski resorts by paying a connecting gondola fee. There is a wide variety of courses that can be enjoyed by everyone from beginners to advanced skiers.

First the most important chairlift breaks down, so we cannot make it back to Naeba with skis, then they shut down the Kagura Gondola too early. On the Website the operating hours are 3pm, as you can see in the photo, it was closed already 1440. Terrible experience.
Best resort I've visited on Honshu yet! Plenty of back country, both accessible from the lifts and via a hike. Good rental options. Plenty of pistes for beginners. Good parks by Japanese standards. Don't bother with Gala or Naeba which are both more crowded and are lower altitude so have worse snow.
Excellent resort. Piste and off-piste skiing, access to Backcountry gates, and a variety of high speed chairs, gondolas, and tram. The snow here seems more prevalent than other resorts in the area. The mid-station serves up some delicious food at well.
Nice beginner/intermediate areas. A lot of trails with beautiful views of the landscape. The infrastructure is a bit less compared to more famous areas & the wait times at the ski lifts are pretty long. But the beauty of the trails make up for it.
Changing area is very small, limited food options. Closes at 4:30. Buses are frequent and multiple buses come at each specified time.
I've snowboarded here many times and the service is always speedy and polite and the access is great. The courses are very long and wide so it never feels crowded even at the ski lifts. There're two types of buses that leave from Echigo Yuzawa: local and rapid so make sure you check the times.
15 mins away by bus ¥380 adult ¥100 for ski bag or large baggage from Echigoyuzawa train station to mitsumata ropeway. It is very big ski resort powder is Kagura very true. But the top lifts close at 14:00 other lifts from kagura area close at 15:30. Other lifts near the base close at 16:15
That’s such an amazing time skiing here last year in. February. We had two days from really really nice weather and great snow with the powder. We were travelling from Canada, I wish that we could be back there right now but Covid has made other plans for you. Please enjoy some photos

Naeba Ski Resort is a bustling winter sports destination in Japan, known for its diverse terrain catering to skiers and snowboarders of all levels. The resort boasts high-quality powder snow and offers various levels of trails, including a 4-kilometer long downhill route. Additionally, there's a snow amusement park suitable for visitors of all ages. The facilities are comprehensive, and the resort features the world's longest aerial ropeway connecting it to the adjacent Kagura ski resorts.
It’s far from Tokyo but it’s absolutely worth going, I’m an amateur snowboarder but the snow was fluffy and soft which made it easier for me and more enjoyable. The lift ticket was also a fair price and if you’re good at this you could do it as many times as you want, the queue isn’t too bad.
The staff are friendly and there was someone needed help which they sent snowmobile asap and managed the situation. Less crowded than Gala so it’s much better.
You could rent your ski or snowboard equipment and clothes from nearby shop as on the resort it might be expensive.

Naibos ski resort is the biggest and best equipped in the area if not all of Niigata. It has high speed lifts, gondolas, and conveyor belt lifts for beginners. If this is the first time skiing with friends of varied ability or with a family this is probably the best ski resort to go to. It's huge and has a gondola that gets you to the next ski resort over. With it's huge size and variety of terrain it'll satisfy anyone. There is the Prince hotel which is literally at the bottom of the slopes so you have a close place to stay and the prices are a fraction of that in the USA. Single day lift ticket are under 7000 yen or less than $50 for a full Day ticket. Check around as you can get discounts or they have a 5-hour ski pass for 5000 yen. Naeba it's also great to spend several days at as it's so big you cannot ski the entire resort within a single day. It'll take several.
It's a very beginner friendly ski resort, lots of green line with different difficulty, and easy to difficult blue line to practice advance. Dragondola has a pretty view and different style course in Toshiro ski resort. You can get different level of restaurant cross all building. It's also easy to get from public transportation. Recommend for all the beginners especially for the first time skier/snowboarder. For middle/advance player you can choose others like Kagura ski resort.
The ski resort was a great choice for beginners. It offered plenty of space for me to practice, and there were also areas where I could have fun with my younger brother, who couldn’t ski.The food was also fantastic, with a variety of options that made it easy to refuel during the day. Overall, it was a wonderful trip, and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone just starting out or looking for a family-friendly spot.
One of my favorite ski resorts in Japan! About 2 - 3 hours away from Tokyo. Tons of food options between the resort and hotel. Plenty of space for children of all ages. Slopes are more for beginners and advanced skiers and snowboarders with a couple options for experts. Lots of activities and places to visit outside of the resort as well. Let Naeba be your first experience!!

I like this place for the reason that it has all the planes and altitudes we need for fun with snow. From beginners to advance players can have fun at this resort be it ski or snowboarding. Even we have plenty places to have fun for childrens.
There are good enough food restaurants available there to quench your hunger. Rental gears are easily available at the spot or from nearby places around there.
Also, this place is accessible by bus 🚌 easily from Yuzawa station which is about 1 hour bus ride.
Prince Hotel near the Naeba ski resort offers customers retro furnishings and all the necessary 70s amenities, classic dish choices from the era and staff service that encourages you to be independent and self-reliant.
If one wishes to relive or experience the unique charm of the 1970s, Prince Hotel provide their customers with a nostalgic journey at a reasonable price (about $800USD for seven days stay)

Good ski resort for the long covered snow escalator. However getting to and from the slopes is difficult due to oversubscribed buses from Echigo Yuzawa station. We had to wait for an hour each way. Only recommended for absolute first timers requiring the snow escalator.
Had wonderful experience at Yuzawa Nakazato snow. It was our first time experiencing snow and ski, so my children were excited too. We took ski class for 2 hours, most important is the place not too crowded so we can practice skiing well. The price was reasonable too, value for money.
I’ve done snowboarding in some few places in Japan since I’ve started it here but this is one of the nice place and mostly for beginners to intermediate friendly. We went with our lab members and most of them were beginner. But everyone learned how to ski or snowboarding. I’ll recommend you if you’re a beginner or wanna learn. It was actually hot 🥵 though it was snow.

Echigo Sake Museum Ponshukan, located inside Echigo Yuzawa Train Station, is a sake lover's paradise. The museum offers a unique Sake Tasting Room where visitors can sample over 100 different sake varieties from more than 80 Niigata breweries using automatic vending machines. For a small fee, guests receive tokens and a cup to enjoy their choice of brews.
This place is definitely worth a stop on the Shinkansen! There are 130 coin operated vending machines to choose from. Most of them dispense sake, but they also do soju, plum wine and red wines as well. Coins are 100 yen each. Most machines take 1 coin, and premium drinks are 2 or more.
There is space to put your bags or coats if you don’t want to carry them around, but nothing is secured, so do so at your own risk.

Like everyone in the reviews are saying - definitely a must do when you arrive at the station! I found out about this place via google map reviews and honestly - despite not being a sake fan I enjoyed myself a little too much with the plum flavoured sake. Again - as mentioned, you need to line up and provide a 500 yen that will be broken down into tokens that you can insert to get a tester of the sake you choose. There’s so many and it’s easy to get a little overwhelmed but be like me and stick to the right hand side where the plum sakes are. You don’t be disappointed!
A sake(Japanese rice wine) tasting shop with over 110 sakes available from different local brewers of Niigata.
Niigata brewing is renowned for its non-sweeten and mild-dry taste that differs from the famous Harima and Kyoto brewing. Here the local sake are with different sweetness, dryness and even fruit aroma.
To begin with, buy some tokens at the entrance and you will get a small cup. Place your cup under the outlet of the sake slot you picked, then insert token (1-2 respectively) required and press the yellow button, the sake will be served.
Such a complete collection of local sake is rarely found in other places. It is recommended to start a research to screen out the Niigata sake that you may be interested first before tasting them here.
#56 Midorikawa would be my personal favourite that light drinkers from aboard can easily accept its mild yet elegant taste.
Such a great way to sample lots of different kinds of sake! This shop is located in the train station. There are machines with different sakes containing a variety of signage described flavor profiles at varying price points per sample. Tried a small handful of sakes and they were all really solid.
I visited around 6pm on a Tuesday. The place seems to have a crowd all the time.
You pay at the front counter and get your coils to use to drink your sake. There's a huge range to select from and you can get more coins if you wish to.
This is the Sake Tasting Room in the Ponshukan Marketplace. All Niigata sakes. The most expensive of them all is numbered 115, Shirataki SEVEN at 10 coins a cup.
There are also salt & miso stations to go with chilled cucumber for 150 yen a piece. Pairs well with any warmed, chilled or room temperature sakes.
Great variety of Sake and other liquors to choose from. 130 types in total. ¥500 gives you 5 coins, most of the sakes are 1 coin per cup. The premium ones are 2 coins and above. Definitely worth a visit if you're around the area.
You exchange ¥500 for 5 gold-coin tokens and then use those tokens in the vending machines.
There is more than enough sake to choose from. Nearly 100 sake to choose from! You can also choose Shōchū and I believe I saw wine but we were there for the sake.
You can also get cucumbers to munch on. You can either have that with various types of salt or miso paste.
Water is available to cleanse your pallet.

(Visited February 14 2025) - where do I begin? I was honestly not expecting to like the place that much. For starters, as someone who has never seen snow or even gone to a ski resort, I did a lot of research before deciding on Yuzawa Kogen vs Gala Yuzawa and I’m glad I did! The place can be chaotic. We arrived at the ski resort around 10:45am and it took us an hour to finally rent our equipment get dressed and enter. A few things
1) the rental area is on the 1st floor, you fill out a form and decide what you need ( we were hella unprepared so had to get most of the stuff - 6 adults, 1 toddler)
2) they don’t rent out beanies or snow gloves so make sure you bring them along! They have them up at the mountains after the ropeway lift but it’s pricey and for adult size. Think you can buy them outside the resort as there are numerous areas that sell or rent ski equipment
3) the rental gear are so clean. All the outfits are fitted with a plastic over it for hygienic purposes
4) the ropeway run a certain time .. there are special places to put your ski equipment
5) the top of the mountain is spectacular. There is a small cafe (coffee , hot chocolate and basic snack) that also sells gloves etc and there’s an Italian restaurant but it was super packed when we enquired. There is another restaurant further up the mountain but we didn’t go that far up.
6) not sure if it was a lucky day but there was barely anyone at the top. There were ppl each time the ropeway arrived but they would ski down. Nevertheless the place is so gorgeous and it snowed a bit while we were on top!

Our trip to Yuzawa Kogen in December 2024 was an unforgettable experience! We stayed at Naspa Ski Resort and enjoyed a short stroll from the train station to the Yuzawa Kogen ropeway. The breathtaking views of Yuzawa town nestled beneath the majestic mountains were a stunning welcome. The picturesque scenery was truly captivating, leaving a lasting impression on our minds. Yuzawa Kogen's natural beauty and effortless accessibility make it a must-visit destination for any ski enthusiast or nature lover.
Kogen Yuzawa Resort is conveniently located near Echigo-Yuzawa Station, making it very accessible. As someone from a tropical country, this was my first time experiencing snow—and it was truly delightful! The resort offers snow gear rentals, a café, and even a mini market for convenience.
For foreign visitors, I highly recommend getting the JR Tokyo Wide Pass, as it's very useful for reaching this resort and exploring other nearby destinations.
Just beside Yuzawa Toei Hotel. They have Skyrope for an overlooking view of the city. At the summit they have a nice Italian restaurant. And a nice view to relax when you’re not skiing.
Pleasant ski station for family, for snow board beginners who get lessons (4000¥) from 13h30 to 15h30 and then try the 2.2km long panoramic course (green level). For advanced skills, only a few black and red levels (it is better purchase a connection/link to Yuzawa Gala for an additional +2800¥). There are 3 or 4 restaurant closed to the entrance, and 1 restaurant on top of the ropeway (650¥ ~ 1400¥) with a panoramic view !
Dogs were not allowed in winter season, but maybe in summer season.
Beautiful Snow sightseeing destination near Tokyo. We visited on 5 January, 2023. We did not ski. We bought the ticket for Ropeway and Snow Park (¥3200per). There are also other ticket options. I have attached a photo of ticket price.
Under the Ropeway and Snow Park ticket, we could spend time on the park playing with snow. The park is just beside the ground ski learning area. There are play equipment freely available at park- slide and sledge car for racing. Though the park seem childish, we had lots of fun.
The ropeway takes one station up to the observatory. Amazing view from there! But it was colder than the ground area and no activity to do. Overall, if you want to enjoy snowfall and good winter getaway even without skiing, this place is highly recommended.
Visited in August 23 - after 3 weeks mainly in Tokyo it was great to be out in the fresh air. I arrived early on a Sunday on the train to get the first cable car up! Great views. Lovely Gardens at the top. Walked up to the waterfall nearby too. A very welcome break from the hustle of the city.
This is the first time I tried skiing, and Yuzawa Kogen resort will have a place in my heart. The resort has lift and a nice slope which I think fits very greatly on beginners like me. There is also a rope way that takes you up in the mountain for an amazing view, in which you can also bring your ski. There are also nearby shops and restaurant to eat once your taking a break.

We took skiing classes as well (paid of course). You can get the complete ski kit on a rental for 11000 yen approx and training per person was 8000 yen. The scenery is beautiful and food is good.

The coach was helping me to get up to the hill and the coach is very nice,this is my first time skiing in Japan, the coach was skilled, it is fun interesting and cool. it’s hard to walk with the boots, the coach called me big dock but it was fun. free sandals, warm with thick jacket.the googles was not expensive it is cheap. My family have been to NASPA twice this year and each time we have really enjoyed ourselves. The rooms are clean, the staff are friendly and the ski area is perfect for children. Rentals are quick and easy. Definitely would recommend this place dor a weekend getaway.

Kandatsu Snow Resort, also known as PineRidge Resort, is nestled in the snow country Echigo Yuzawa area of Niigata Prefecture, Japan. The resort boasts 13 ski runs with a 540-meter drop and a maximum slope of 45 degrees. Accessible via a free shuttle bus from Gala Yuzawa station, the resort offers convenient rental services for ski and snowboard equipment at affordable prices.
Lost one side of my gloves at the ground base and the staff was kind enough to send it to my place in Tokyo in just 2 days. The communication was very smooth. Really appreciate their help.
The resort overall level best suits non first time beginner to lower intermediate riders. The main gelande is packed but you can always find secluded areas. The courses are quite short but the park and beginner zones are great. Beautiful scenery and quality snow.
Rental snowboards come with Burton's StepOn by default. You can also ask for strap ones.
For a day trip, JR Ski Ski deals are the best ones to my knowledge.

I only came to Kandatsu because Gala was closed, and I was not disappointed. I loved the slopes, which I feel had something for every level. I lost my insta 360 going down a black slope but I managed to find it buried in the snow the 2nd time I descended from the top haha. Unforgettable experience. The resort and rental is very well organised, and the food at the middle of the mountain is nice too. Highly recommended.
Found this place because the ski resort I originally planned to go to was closed. So glad I did because this is a hidden gem! The runs are nice with an awesome view and not too busy which was handy as we had young kids learning to snowboard! Staff were accommodating and helpful

Nice resort next to Echigo Yuzawa. It is a good place for intermediate and beginner skiers. Very popular for snowboarders. It can be crowded during the weekend. The mid level chalet has a few good restaurants. The base chalet caters everything you need to ski. Access from Tokyo is easy with Joetsu Shinkansen. 70 minutes from Tokyo station.

theres not that many runs so it gets boring after skiing here for one day. the runs are all relatively easy and there is only one black run so if you’re more advanced it would be quite boring. the freshly groomed snow is a bit hard and icy but the ungroomed snow is very soft.

If you are a beginner, this is a place for you. The terrain is flat and broad. Booked a 2 hour lesson from klook (SGD 190++ for 4 person). Can't believe we know how to ski after the 2 hour lesson!
One of the best skiing areas I have been in Japan. There are a variety of different ski lifts to go for different levels of difficulty. The highest peak closes at around 4:30pm which is a safe thing as during winter it gets dark rather early. However, if you still want to ski during the night there is also a night time area where you could ski well into The night. If you choose to go there be sure to bring plenty of warm clothes and gloves and they tend to freeze, yes, freeze as the snow melts on your gloves and freezes again.
You can choose to live in one of the few hotels that are on The mountainside (1/4 up The mountain I think) where they provide Japanese style living quarters with public bathrooms and onsen (little small) as well as catering (small portions for those who are used to western portions).
On a good day with clear weather the view is simply stunning. And is worth every penny and minute getting there.
It has a wide slope and good for beginners but the ski and snowboard rental here is not good. It only 2.5 hrs away from Tokyo by car. Good for 1 day trip

It's a fine campsite. Fees are reasonable. We paid about 4,000 for 4 people, 1 campsite. We brought our own tents. Some of the plots are a bit rocky, though. They also have glamping options available. It's right by a river with an artificial waterfall, which is really nice. You can swim in the water, too.

A fun little fishing experience for children. There are small ponds dotted down the length of a river filled with fish. Armed with a bamboo fishing rod and a choice of different baits you try to pull them out of the river. Once you have caught them you can clean and gut them, and then roast them on skewers on a charcoal grill.
There is also one pond where you can pay to try to catch the fish by hand.
The Fishing Park also has a large BBQ area where you can buy platters of meat, vegetables and noodles and grill them over the flames - no need to bring anything yourself.

Lots of people seem to be mistakenly writing reviews here about the ski resort or about a restaurant.... The title though is Dragondola Station... And oh boy the Dragondola is just phenomenal. 5000 meters and 20 minutes of stunning views of rivers, lakes and mountains. If you're skiing Naeba it's worth the additional 700 yen on top of your lift pass just to ride up and back. Not to mention it connects Naeba to the far superior Kagura resort. Only problem is it closes slightly early at 15:30.

We usually stay Nakazato hotel and enjoy snowboard with my friends. Here you can find long and wide track with less people. Top 3rd lift is one of the extreme one. Once you try there you don’t afraid anything at all.

Yuzawa Museum of History and Folklore Yukiguni-kan is a small yet fascinating museum located in the heart of Yuzawa. Housed in a traditional gabled farmhouse made of keyaki wood, it was established around 1935 and showcases artifacts from Jomon period sites, old folk tools, equipment, and even a fossil Calyptogena dating back 4 million years.
A must-visit place if you’ve read Kawabata Yasunari’s novel Snow Country. The scenes from the book came vividly to mind — this is the very heart of Echigo-Yuzawa.

A wonderful small museum that tells the history of Yugawa area and part of the livelihood of the Novel Prize Laureate, Kawabata Yasunari. The bestseller, Yukigini (Snow Country) , he wrote was based on his romance with a lady here. The museum has outlined this story and his life of literature. A must go even though you just want to do snow sport.

Interesting little culture/history/folk museum in the center of Yuzawa. Sections on traditional ways of life throughout the four season, as well as art and objects related to the novel Yukiguni. It doesn't take too long to go around the 3 floors and it is good value at 500 yen per adult.
It was raining outside. Perfect way to spend the afternoon getting to know the area and its history and about Yasunari Kawabata and his famous book. Well worth the 500 yen entry fee.

we arrived a day earlier before trying out this place as our very 1st skiing experience. kidz love it & my two teenagers tried skiing. we had a blast … were lucky as the weather’s bright & sunny.
We didn’t have enough time to actually go inside the ski resort but I must say it was pretty empty. As mentioned in comments - good for beginners and for kids but I think the price is a little expensive. Having said that, the area outside the resort is free and has tons of snow so my son was perfectly fine and happy!

Hotel Futaba is a serene hot spring hotel located in the historical Echigo-Yuzawa Onsen area, surrounded by the natural beauty of Mount Tanigawa. The hotel offers comfortable Japanese rooms with private bathing facilities and traditional tatami flooring. It features four different onsen zones, two on the 7th floor with fantastic views and two on the 6th floor with diverse pools.
Been here twice already. Really enjoyed my stays. The room is big and comfortable. There is hotel shuttle van service pick-up and drop-off at the train station every 30 minutes. And if renting snow gears at the hotel, there is also a drop-off and pick-up services at the snow mountain.

We had 2 missing items during our stay: one Tumi toiletry bag and a pair of Prada sunglasses.
The last time we saw the lost items was before we left the hotel to a ski resort nearby. They were put on the table in the room. Therefore, only cleaning staff who came in the room at 10 am or the staff who came in during dinner time (18:00 - 19:00 hrs) to prepare for the futons had access to the room while we were out. We reported the lost items to the hotel management but received no response, not even an apology. This is very disappointing and really changed our good image on Japan and the Japanese.
Sadly Japan is not safe any more !!
Loved staying at this ryokan. A great traditional experience and the perfect place to wind down after a long day snowboarding. Shinkansen station was im easy walking distance with heaps of shops nearby. You can purchase ski passes and rent a snowboard here too, with a shuttle bus taking you to the snow resorts. The only fault was that it cost 500 yen per luggage to store them after check out.
Wonderful traditional style ryokan / hotel with the best onsen options. We soaked in the open watching the snow fall around us. The in house dinner and breakfast were delicious. The room was comfortable and service excellent.

We visited in autumn so no snow yet. I imagined it would have been a great place on winter. Nonetheless there is a spectacular view of the town from a coffee shop there which is very relaxing. Small activites at autumn with the gliding var which my kids enjoyed. The garden would have been great if it was springnor autumn. We still had fun though.

We went at the end of october and the leaves already turned yellow/red, it was beautiful! Perfect for a weekend getaway staying in a ryokan and walking through the woderful alpine routes (they are 3 levels). You can buy the tickets for the ropeway also directly in the ryokan you will stay (it's cheaper). The air is incredibly pure and fresh over there and the views stunning!

We came in December and were lucky to come after heavy snow. Only 2 lifts operating but a bargain at only 1000 yen / day with discount from our hotel. Perfect for our beginner family. By the end of our 1 1/2 days, Id ridden the same routes over and over but still enjoyed it.
Really only 3 green/easy runs. Not overly large collection of other runs. But plenty enough for two days fun while you learn to ski.
You can pick up some nice cheap packages from ViewPlaza inc 2day lift pass/shinkasen/food/on-snow-hotel for about 16000 yen+.
It is easy to get to 1hr on train 10 min on bus.

After 3 weeks in a very hot Tokyo with a few days spent in Osaka and Hiroshima in August 23 I just wanted to get out of cities! Last day of my JR Pass I boarded the Shinkansen in Tokyo and 2 hours later was 200km away in Yuzawa and into the stunning mountain scenery! I visited on a Sunday and arrived before the ropeway opened. Great to be out in the open, fresh air, first lift up too so was lovely and quiet. The botanical gardens are nice but the views are better - spectacular. Nice cafe - a bit confusing as it's the choose what you want on the machine and take order to counter type. Great for kids too as there's a metal bobsleigh, playwark and chairlifts. Spent about 3/4 hours there then went to see the nearby waterfall at Food falls.

The ride up the rope lift comes every 20mins starting at 00. So every hour, 20th and 40th minute. And the ride takes about 12 mins from boarding and alighting. On the top the view is spectacular and there are some activities you can do like a luge ride and a short hiking path.

And the first Japan attraction I tried was Gala Yuzawa Ski Resort in Niigata Prefecture, one of the best and the closest snow hills/mountain from our tropical home.
You always need to aware and keep all the tickets save with your life (lol) I mean seriously, besides that you need to be more than on time, the level of preciseness for Japan train system is not a myth. You need to find the right train line at least 15 minutes before departure, see the time schedule and the platform (but do not worry, Tokyo Rail Days Indonesia will make it easier)
Wherever you stay, Shinkansen train (yes those high-speed train) will start from Tokyo Station. Called Max Tanigawa Shinkansen or the Double Decker Shinkansen you will enjoy the Japan scenery behind your window, the total time between Tokyo – Gala Yuzawa Station is 77 minutes and its direct train station to station. They will also serve you hot soba soup to add into your dip which is perfect for the winter weather during my time of visit.
It is a little pricy in my opinion. But the experience is worth it.
Fun note: The waiting queue is usually quite long so remember to write down your names and walk around before your turn comes.

We traveled half way around the world from the States for our vacation to stay at this facility. I think the best and only great thing about this place is its location, as the facility seems dated and the room we stayed in smell like the previous guest smoked in the room. We informed the staff of this and was told that it is not smoke and was suggested that it may be perfume. Unfortunately, instead of being provided the option of moving to a different room, the only solution they provided was to spray a Febreze like product to try and cover the smokey scent. We end up opening the window during the whole time of our stay. I had high expectation for this place because of the high reviews, but I would definitely not stay here again. I am certain not all rooms smell like this, we just got unlucky, and unfortunately the staff does not seem like they want to resolve this issue.

I loved this place. It's really beautiful but it would be better if I went there a week ago. Autumn leaves have already started falling down.
From the bus stop at the Naeba Prince Hotel, go inside the Hotel and take the right hand side walk way to N plateau building. Going down to1F and purchasing return tickets, ¥3,800 per person, before taking the free shuttle bus to dragondola station.

Due to its higher altitude, Kagura has one of the longest season in Japan (Nov-May) and there was still plenty of snow late (photos taken 30 Mar) and not too slushy, whereas at Naeba next door there wasn't much white stuff left.
There are two restaurants both not huge (they're packed during lunch hours), with other options over at Kagura or Mitsumata area. Strangely the restaurants offer no view of the lake despite both of them being right next to it! Instead go up lift Y for a spectacular view of the lake.
