Bodies of Water
Nestled amidst lush, forested hills, Lake Okushima is an artificial lake that captivates visitors with its stunning turquoise waters. This hidden gem may require a bit of effort to reach, but the breathtaking views make it worthwhile. The lake's color shifts from vibrant blue to emerald green depending on the time of day and weather conditions, creating a picturesque scene that feels almost surreal. Known for its enchanting 'Shima Blue,' Lake Okushima offers a perfect backdrop for memorable photos or romantic moments.
A lake that resulted from the Shimagawa Dam. It is famous for its "Shima Blue" color. We went here on a snowy weather so the blue color was not visible. Despite that I still enjoyed the pure white view. It was so beautiful to look at. Will revisit again someday to see the Shima blue color.
Aibi Y — Google review
A nice lake with a dam in a very beautiful surrounding, however not so easy to get there and there are very few cafes and swimming did not seem possible, (some guides told it was - but at least we did not see anyone swimming on a hot summer day) also the infrastructure there is not in a very good condition.
Sebastian K — Google review
Shima Blue is a local reference to the crystal-clear blue color of this lake. I recommend visiting, even if just for a short time, or circling around it either by bicycle or car.
Tamas S — Google review
If you’re a nature enthusiast, definitely worth visiting in the summer for a short getaway or a fun kayaking adventure! Photos taken from Akazawa Bridge on 2023/7/4 Recommend: 1. Driving up Akazawa Bridge 2. Couple stops at the observations decks along the way, soaking up the view 3. Shimagawa Dam: for snacks, foot bath
Shane L — Google review
It is a beautiful lake and you could technically walk around it but you will be on the street where the car goes. It might be ok if u are on the bike but I decided not to go for a walk cuz I prefer walking in the nature and not a car street. Lake itself is pretty but not the best. I might have had better experience if I had a bike.
Sayaka S — Google review
You don’t see much of the lake if you walk around it, and you are walking on roads most of the time. It takes an hour and 20 to make the loop. There is free parking just next to the dam. No onsen by the lake.
Marie C — Google review
If you’re nearby come look but it can done within 10 minutes

The Nakanojo Museum of Folk and History, located in the former Agatsuma Daisan School building, offers a glimpse into local folk art and the daily life of the school. The museum showcases valuable materials from prehistory to modern times. Visitors can experience a nostalgic journey back in time within this important cultural property designated by Gunma Prefecture. The museum is accessible and provides an enjoyable atmosphere for exploration.
I learned so much about Nakanojo and Agatsuma after visiting here. The town’s fascinating history and story are preserved here. There’s really a lot of information, so much that I will return for a second visit. I recommend visiting for anyone in the area. The main exhibit was cool and I enjoyed learning some things in the ninja and Shrine sections also.

(Translated by Google) The museum building itself is a former elementary school building that was completed in 1888 and has been designated as an important cultural property by the prefecture. There are displays in the classrooms of the school building, allowing you to feel the atmosphere of those days. The exhibition itself has a lot of information, and if you look at it carefully, it will take you so long that you won't believe it's a town museum. Isama Studio Park, located in Gunma, was funded by the local government and is housed in a former schoolhouse where director Oguri Kohei's award-winning film "The Sleeping Man" was shot. The park features a permanent exhibition showcasing the movie set of "The Sleeping Man" and vintage movie equipment. It also serves as a venue for art exhibitions during the Nakanojo Biennale. Additionally, there is an attached RV park for visitors to stay at.
(Translated by Google) We stayed at the attached RV park. The old school building is now a studio. I have no interest in filmmaking at all, so I didn't really understand what was going on, but I saw people involved in film production working all night. Many staff members come from all over the place at night and return in the morning. It's a strange place. Lol (At this time, it seems that filming for a movie that will be released soon was taking place.) Although it is an old-fashioned school building, the building itself seems to have been well reinforced. You can come and go as you like, so it's a great place to stop by and take photos. (Translated by Google) During the biennial Nakanojo Biennale, it is the venue for exhibitions of works. The permanent exhibition also includes a movie set for ``The Sleeping Man,'' the first film produced by a local government. It's not unusual these days for local governments to produce films, but this was the starting point. It was released in 1996, so it's been 25 years already. The Koji Yakusho in the picture on display is also quite young. There is also a movie set by Masayoshi Yamazaki. I haven't seen ``The Sleeping Man'', ``The Moon and the Cabbage'', or ``Shadow Stepping'', so I didn't really get a sense of reality from them, but I'm sure those who have seen them will be very impressed. This allows visitors to fully experience the area and nearby attractions such as Mount Asama and the unique Onioshidashi Volcanic Park.
great place, excellent view, curvy road like S. Germany. Many tourists, some are speeding, souvenir shops are over-priced, food portions are small but indeed one of my favorite places.

Just found out that there is Mount Kusatsu, I always go to the hot springs. Today we arrived at Mount Kusatsu. It's a shame because it's foggy and the weather isn't good, you can't see the sulfur, the road is being repaired, and the parking lot is closed, a little below there is a place to park, there are wild blueberries growing on the rocks, the area is really beautiful and amazing, you can feel the clouds and sky very close. Ikaho Green Bokujo is a charming petting farm where visitors can interact with various animals, including sheep and dogs. It's a popular spot for families with kids, offering the opportunity to feed goats, horses, and other animals. While some visitors found the cost of activities to be a bit high, many enjoyed their time at the farm. The beautiful fall scenery adds to the experience, making it an ideal destination for a day trip. Additionally, there are opportunities for barbecue offers on-site.
You can see sheep and dog show in this farm. Also you can feed goats, horses, sheep and other animals. Most visitors were families with children but adults can enjoy too. All animals seemed to be well taken care of but some of them looked hungry and irritated.

We found ourselves facing a shortage of manpower, which made things a bit challenging. Navigating the area was particularly tricky for us as foreigners.
Ferdinand B — Google review
This a great petting farm to visit with the kids on a nice day. It can get expensive though with the fee to pet each animal at multiple stations though. My kids enjoyed it, so I guess the cost is irrelevant. Oh avoid the Game Center area, because once the kids gravitate towards that well, they will just want to stay there. I just tried to redirect their attention the best I could lol
Aaron E — Google review
Entrance tickets is ¥1500 (adult). There's vege for the animals for sale in the farm at ¥400/cup. Rabbit and guinea pig petting at ¥700/10mins. Quite pricey, and there wasn't much animals. Mostly sheeps and rabbits. Animals are quite well-managed tho! Clean!
DORRIS A — Google review
Good place for kids but the opening hours are too short while the events and shows schedule are not frequent. In-door grill of beef is also good lunch. Worth to buy the combo.
Tsz C — Google review
It is not a very cheap place to visit, but I suppose it would be a fun way to spend time together, particularly if you have children. Parking is free but in addition to the entrance fee, every single attraction costs extra money. So if you have the time to visit every attraction, it may be worth it to invest in the all access pass. The ice cream and the moumou is deliciousness that is a must-have at this park. Walking the goats around is also pretty fun.

Chatsubomi Moss Park, located in Nakanojo Town, Agatsuma County, Gunma Prefecture, is renowned as the birthplace of chatsubomi-goke, a type of moss that thrives in highly acidic water. The park features boardwalks and platforms offering stunning views of the moss-covered landscape sustained by an acidic spring. Visitors can admire the striking contrast between vibrant green moss on rocks and flowing water.
Cute little moss park. Entrance fee of 600 yen per person. Free shuttle bus that comes every 5 or so minutes. About a 300m walk up the hill to get to the boardwalk. Probably take at most an hour to walk around with gratuitous amounts of photo taking.
Michael W — Google review
Good side trip from Kusatsu Onsen. Take the bus or walk the trail to the moss area. We chose to walk the trail heading back and saw the nice little shrine on the way.
Khairani A — Google review
This natural park features a fountain of hot spring water that supports a kind of moss adapted to living in the acidic water. It looks beautiful when the weather is rainy and cool, but unfortunately I went in mid-August after a historic hot and dry spell, so most of the moss had gone dormant or died back. It's still a beautiful location and there are trails that go off from here to internationally recognized wetlands in the mountains. As far as I know, you need a car to get here and finding it can be a bit tricky. Parking is free but there is a charge for entry of 500 yen if I remember. A shuttle bus is available from the visitor center to the moss area, but the 30 minute walk through the forest is easy and beautiful itself. A small shop at the entrance sells local products and ice cream. Although it doesn't seem too touristy yet, there were a number of foreign visitors -- I just hope it doesn't become overrun with horrible bus tours.
Aaron M — Google review
I suggest this is a must visit if you travel to Kusatsu village. A bit of drive from the village but believe me it worth the effort. The place still not very touristy. So you can have your solitude walking there. Very very nice, i love it.

(Translated by Google) I visited for the first time after hearing that this rare moss was in full bloom. Apparently, it's the only moss that grows in colonies where hot springs gush forth. The area smelled of sulfur and steam was rising. The water was clean but had a strong sulfur content, and no fish or other living creatures were to be seen. After paying the entrance fee at reception, I boarded a minibus, got off, and walked up the steep slope. There were walking sticks available to borrow where you get off the bus, so we recommend that elderly people use one. There are no toilets at the colony, so be sure to use one before getting on the bus. Nestled in the picturesque mountains of Nakanojo city, Nakanojo Gardens is a stunning collection of seven distinct gardens that beckons nature lovers and families alike. This botanical paradise features a meticulously designed rose garden, vibrant hydrangeas, and an enchanting maze garden that invites exploration. While summer showcases the blooms at their finest, autumn reveals the nearby apple orchards bursting with fruit.
Grade A++ gardens. Grade A++ tourist destination for anyone visiting Gunma prefecture. During our visit, we loved the variety of natural sounds and beautiful colors in the sunlight. Nakanojo Gardens is not an expensive place to visit at all and you get so much for the money spent. My family and I spent nearly all day here. There’s also two places for kids to play and many places for the older folks to relax. I can’t believe we have this treasure in my hometown!

One of the highlights of Nakanojo. Beautiful spot to take pictures and view flowers. The rose garden in October is beautiful and well maintained. The cherry blossoms in spring are also gorgeous. The entire hillside is lined with sakura trees so there’s no shortage of cherry blossoms to be seen.

I went on a Monday afternoon at the end of July, and the gardens were pretty dead, which was perfect because it was like I had the whole place to myself. The weather was cloudy, which gave the pictures moody and melancholic feel.

Beautiful Rose Garden. I came in Autumn, I think spring is better with cherry blossoms and apricot flowers. It takes 2 hours and 30 minutes from my place to Nakanojo.

A beautiful botanical garden nestled in the mountains of Nakanajo city. You can enjoy a nicely planned rose garden, beautiful hydrangeas, and a neat little circular maze garden. The flowers are great in summer, but don't neglect fall when the apple orchards next door are in full fruit. There are also several small food and drink stalls around the grounds. The Rose Cafe in particular offers good coffee at a decent price to drink whie watching the roses. There is also a gift shop where you can purchase various goods made in Gunma. This includes jam and tsukemono pickles made by a company located just down the street. If you are headed up to Shima onsen this garden is definitely worth an hour of your time.

Visited mid October. We arrived a bit late, after dusk, but don't regret it at all, it was just harder to photograph. Definitely advise driving with the windows up as the smell can be a bit much in some spots. Views were fantastic, there were a few cars parked here taking Instagram photos so be prepared to not be able to stop anywhere as you drive through. There are lots of places to pull over, however the good ones are busy. If you do manage to get a spot, it's very scenic and well worth the trip. We saw volcanic gases steaming up in many places, and on the opposite side of the mountain there was a sea of clouds which was objectively more impressive than the views at this spot. We hired and drove a new Crown up here, which was a great experience for those who appreciate mountain roads, however you quickly get stuck behind unconfident people. If you're this type, please don't spoil the experience for the rest as the roads are very windy and narrow. Kusatsu is located at the base of the mountain, a lovely little town with a hot spring running through it and many onsen, well worth the visit.

This is the highest point of all public roads in Japan, situated in Gunma prefecture and a short distance from Nagano prefecture's boarder. This point is 2,172m from sea level and a few kilometers away from Yokoteyama Shibutoge Ski area, (which is worth a visit during autumn especially on a clear day).

Route 292 highway is not too difficult and scenic, weather permitting you can see great views en route Shiga on clear/sunny days. Do check ahead if highway is open before heading up, to 2200m highest point on Japan highways which is not too far 1/2hour. Usually not crowded, there are ‘rest stops’ at scenic view lookouts but no toilets. Closer to 2200m near mountain pass (head in the clouds), visibility may drop drastically on overcast days, when you find yourself driving in the clouds with close to zero sight its time to head back slowly or seat it out (warning :).

Really nice drive if you have time in your trip for it. Part of the road was closed due to volcanic activity, but it was still really scenic. A few places to stop and get photos.

Great landscape and wonderful drive from Manza to the Monkey park. Not to be missed u less you are afraid of height. The stretch of road of about 5km along the ridge line allow a panorama view of the Nagano and Gunma Prefectures.

Neat to say we’ve driven on the highest peak of Japan’s National Roads. Seems to be a popular spot for cyclists and drivers alike. The views of surrounding mountains are stunning. You can see Kusatsu Onsen from here as well. The pull-off for the highest point is quite small, so it will be crowded during holidays. There are many other pull-offs at other points in the road on the way up to the highest point though. In late April/early May there is a snow corridor section along the road. The closest restroom is in the Shibutoge Hotel, and they request donations/purchases to use the restroom. What’s fun about the building is its half in Gunma and half in Nagano.

(Translated by Google) My life was saved because someone told me that I should bring the trekking poles that were left at the entrance. It's supposed to be only 1km long, but the slope is steeper than I expected, and the terrain is rocky underfoot, making it quite difficult to walk. No, depending on the time of year, it's more dangerous than difficult to walk. When I went there in late autumn, I felt slippery underfoot due to fallen leaves, the terrain was difficult to understand, and the roads were narrow, so I felt in danger several times. Plus, there's the fear of bears. It was thrilling. It may be fortunate that the journey is downhill on the way there and uphill on the way back. You can just do your best on the way up, but if you miss a step on the way down, you'll be in trouble because the sides are even steeper. There were some parts where we had to go along ropes, but I realized the greatness of our predecessors who installed it. (I guess this won't be a problem for people who are used to mountain climbing.) It's good training for people who exercise. The waterfall itself was very beautiful and impressive. It was an elegant waterfall, but the combination of the gaping hole and the red rock surface and joint-like rock surface gave it a unique atmosphere. Due to the time of year, there was no sign of people, and I felt a sense of awe while being in nature for the first time in a while. We need places like this to remain. Even at the early winter temperature, I was sweating at the waterfall, so I recommend choosing the right time of year to go and making appropriate preparations.

Nestled in the serene depths of Lake Okushima, しゃくなげの滝 (Rhododendron Falls) is a captivating natural wonder that enchants visitors with its beauty. Accessible via a small parking lot just off the loop course, this waterfall can be heard from afar, hinting at its impressive cascade. Although you can get quite close to it, a protective fence limits your view to the side, leaving some aspects of its grandeur hidden from sight.
If you all the way go to Shakunage falls, pick up one of the many fist-sized pieces of rock from landslides in the area. You will know what do do with it when you get to the falls. I did not do this and I regret it. Please learn from my mistake.

Nestled in the heart of Japan, the Former Ōshi Station is a charming relic from a bygone era. Once a bustling hub for transporting iron ore from the Gunma Iron Mine, this station has been transformed into a quaint museum showcasing vintage freight cars and remnants of its operational past. The original hopper building still stands, offering visitors a glimpse into its historical significance.
It’s small. It’s in the middle of many attractions like Top Nakanojo Gardens etc. This attraction should be on your list of sights to see while in Nakanojo. There’s something nostalgic about it and I like that sort of thing. There’s plenty of parking. The only issue is that it’s easy to see inside the toilet room from the outside, which is awkward.

It wasn’t as “blue” as I expected to be, but it was a nice quick stop. The parking is limited and one way street to go around the lake. There is a nice cafe by the parking spot. Nice 10-15min walk. Might be better view if the weather was nicer.

Shinaki Dam is a must-see attraction for nature enthusiasts. While not the largest dam, it offers stunning views and vibrant surroundings that make it worth a visit. Visitors may even catch glimpses of local wildlife from the dam, adding to the allure of this cool destination for dam aficionados.
If you're in Dam, obviously a must see for its surroundings. Not the biggest one around, but great color and outlook.

(Translated by Google) Dam tour: Gunma-Shinaki Dam. (202410M) Gravity type concrete dam, height 43.5 meters, crest length 106.0 meters. A multipurpose dam built on Yukawa, Tone River system, for the purpose of river maintenance and power generation. The dam lake, Joshu Yunoko, is characterized by its emerald green color. This seems to be due to sulfur flowing into the water. The river water that flows into this area becomes highly acidic, and the dam is responsible for neutralizing this acidity. As a result, the Azuma River, which was once known as the River of Death, was reborn as a river full of clear fish. Dam card: Currently being distributed at Shinaki Dam Water Quality Management Office. There are trees and it is not visible from the parking lot halfway up the slope. What I saw and felt when I went there. The lake surface is murky. The area of the lake is smaller than I thought. The valley is deep. Looking from the left bank, you can see the flow from Kusatsu in the distance. What I thought was that if the water quality is not improved, the dam will not last. There are neutralization plants other than Kusatsu. Is the valley deep because it is highly acidic? Is there enough capacity to store and lift the sediment? Also, how do they handle the solidified sediment? Are they using the lifting facility on the side of the management office? And so on. There were many. But Nakanojo Town is large. It spreads all the way to Shibu Pass. Is this the former Rokugo Village? I gave a dam card to someone who happened to be with me. When I told him that the Yamba 1 million card was still being distributed, he was happy to go right away. Nestled in the heart of nature, Momotaro Waterfall is a breathtaking destination that captivates visitors with its stunning blue waters. Even after heavy rainfall, the water remains crystal clear and abundant, creating a picturesque scene that's hard to forget. Accessible via a short drive from Tokyo—approximately two and a half hours—this hidden gem offers ample parking near Shima Onsen and the Shima Intake Dam sign.
The dam is under construction, access to the waterfall is closed, the view is still beautiful, and worth a visit.

The deities enshrined here are Susanoo no Mikoto and Hondawake Mikoto. The sacred zelkova tree is a magnificent tree with a circumference of 9.7m, a height of 15m (the upper part of the main trunk is dead), and an estimated age of 700 years. Suhoson is the younger brother of Amaterasu Omikami (Amaterasu), and is a ferocious yet kind-hearted god who is also famous for defeating Yamata no Orochi. He is the father-in-law of Oanamuchi, the deity enshrined at Azuma Shrine, also known as Warimiya, which is the general guardian of Azuma and is enshrined nearby. Hondabetsu no Mikoto was Emperor Ojin, the 15th emperor. Hachiman is a deity that was revered by the Genji and Taira clans, and is also the god of military fortune. No wonder it was invited to the foot of Yamashiro. On the other hand, there is something interesting about the above-mentioned solicitation of Sushoson. Could it be related to the influx of the Izumo gods into eastern Japan after the ceding of the country by the great lords? Or perhaps he prayed to Susho no Mikoto, who is said to have controlled the floods of the Hii River in Izumo, in order to prevent the Azuma River from flooding due to the huge debris flow caused by the eruption of Mt. Asama. There's no way to know it now, but Nakanojo City is a hotspot, with shrines dedicated to Izumo gods scattered here and there. Hanareyamakuhi Park is a hidden gem that offers an enchanting escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

(Translated by Google) A quiet park. There is a mixture of hand-carved and machine-carved monuments. It's cool even during the summer day. However, there are mosquitoes, so insect repellent is a must. (Original) 静かな公園。 手彫りで彫った文字の碑と、機械彫りの碑と混在してある。 夏の昼間でも涼しい。 ただ藪蚊がいるので虫除け必須。
