Architectural Buildings
Bauhaus Dessau, designed by Walter Gropius in 1926, is a highly influential building that showcases the hallmarks of Bauhaus design. The glass facade and absence of visible supporting elements on the corners are iconic features. The Cafe-Bistro continues the tradition of being a meeting place for program participants, employees, and friends. This architectural masterpiece still looks fresh and contemporary despite being almost a century old.
I love this place. This place answered me plenty of questions about the why, the where, the what, the who and the when. It is great to learn about the motivations, learn about the who were these people, to learn about the where and when have the gone after Dessau. I have spent two days and three guided tours and I will for sure come again.

A Masterpiece of Vision: A Review of the Bauhaus Dessau My recent visit to the Bauhaus building in Dessau, Germany, was more than just a tour; it was a journey into a living monument of architectural and educational history. The experience profoundly illustrated the singular vision of one man, Walter Gropius, who, against incredible odds, brought the modern art and design movement to life. It is nothing short of astonishing to consider how he single-handedly managed to fund, design, and create the entire institutional framework, all while navigating the tumultuous political landscape between the two world wars. The moment you step into the building, you are immediately struck by its revolutionary design. The famous staircase, the sun-drenched workshops, and the seamless integration of various functions speak to Gropius's genius. I was particularly moved by visiting his personal office, located in the bridge connecting the two main buildings. This space, a hub of creativity and leadership, felt like the very heart of the movement. Seeing the workshops where masters and students collaborated, and the student hostel where they lived and breathed art, brought the curriculum to life. The building is a manifesto in itself, a physical embodiment of Gropius’s belief in the unity of art and technology. The self-sufficiency of the institution is a testament to Gropius's strategic mind. He devised a curriculum that drew students from around the world, creating a vibrant, international community. He hand-picked a legendary faculty, including Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky, and created a marketing machine to attract global talent. This was all done while facing immense political pressure and shifting ideologies, which ultimately led to the school's closure. Despite these challenges, Gropius’s unwavering commitment ensured that the Bauhaus's influence would endure. The tour is incredibly well-curated, and I highly recommend taking it to truly appreciate the scale of this achievement. The theater, the student cafeteria, and even the gift shop—which is filled with beautiful designs—all contribute to an experience that is both educational and deeply inspiring. For anyone with an interest in art, architecture, or history, the Bauhaus Dessau is a must-see. It's a powerful reminder that with clear vision and relentless determination, one person can shape the course of history.

Amazing! This place was a world leader and is symbollic and of the modern movement in architecture and design in Europe in the 1900s. Celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. It has been restored, true to the original design after being closed by the racist regime of the 1930s. Well worth the visit for architects and designers.
Paul E — Google review
Must-see for those interested in modernism and architecture as a whole. You can roam a part of the building freely. However, all classrooms and the entire student flats block are sadly inaccessible for visitors (except if you book a night in a flat!). The shop has a great selection of souvenirs. The workers were warm and friendly.

The ticket for Bauhaus+Museum+Master's Houses is 27€ and it's completely worth it. The place is amazing, and the temporary exhibitions are always really good. Will visit again!

This is a simply fabulous historic building. Once the home of the revolutionary Bauhaus School and designed by Walter Gropius it stands as a memorial to an innovative school that only survived from 1919-1933 but had a huge impact on architecture and design across the whole world.

This place, showcasing the architecture and arts of legends, can inspire you for years. Revisiting this historical place that changed the world evokes an amazing feeling.
Milan P — Google review
Mmmmm I love the bahhaus movement and the art from that time, but the institute itself doesnt do much for me. The exhibitions inside are about the history of the buildin; its beginnings, its time during nazi rule, its reconstruction, and its preservation. Another one focused on the design of one of the bauhaus styled lights. Both were interesting but I was hoping to simply see more bauhaus art (go to the museum for that). The structure itself, while iconic, didnt do much for me either. I think when it was built, it would have been revolutionary. I did love seeing the bauhaus styled lamps irl though :)

The Masters' Houses in Dessau, Germany, are a collection of homes designed by Walter Gropius for the Bauhaus school's faculty. The largest house was occupied by Gropius and his wife Ise, while the others were semi-detached properties with identical modular floor plans. Recently rebuilt by Bruno Fioretti Marques, the master house features contemporary elements such as light concrete and milky glass.
Have you ever ask you one of these questions: How architecture influences our live experiences? Who are these greatest modern minds in arts? Why could it happen? You will find a lot of answers here in Dessau Meisterhäuser. Some promises, you will even find answers on questions you haven’t asked before to come to this place.
Michael S — Google review
The houses look great from the outside, but are a disappointment inside. A little film made when one of the houses was first built, showing all the modern devices in the home showed what the houses could look like inside. Is money the prob lem, or do the foundation believe. It's better to show empty rooms?

I wrote a 1000 pages Bauhaus Book after visiting such an amazing creative site … imagine seven of world’s most creative minds live with their families in one place as neighbors. The energy is there since 1926 … it is still giving its creative power to the visitors since a hundred years … thanks to the company and the authorities that helped in rebuilding this world heritage Mecca … Amr Helmy

I came here just after sunrise, more for the light than with an interest to see the inside. These houses are stunning for their time, so influential...

A magnificent monument of modernism. If you haven't been, I definitely recommend it. All the Bauhaus-related exhibitions are worth seeing.

I would fully recommend doing a tour, you learn so much more than you would going around on your own and you are still free to wonder around yourself afterwards. It’s a super inspiring and story rich place to visit. Would recommend to anyone even remotely interested in design and modernism.

Really great experience for people who loves art, architecture and history….Inspiring place where a world changing idea came true!!Must visit!

The master house has been rebuilt by the berlin based studio Bruno Fioretti Marques in a contemporary way: volume and windows has been restored with new materials like light concrete and milky glass. Inside you will find a permanent installation of Olaf Nicolai with shades of white in the wall and temporary pieces of other artists. You can also see small models of the houses.

Kornhaus Dessau is a historic restaurant located on the banks of the Elbe River in Dessau-Rosslau. It offers a delightful dining experience with fresh seasonal fruit, veggie skillets, and banana foster fresh toast. The restaurant is known for its vegan options and has received positive reviews from travelers. With its beautiful location and delicious menu, Kornhaus Dessau is a must-visit for those looking to enjoy a memorable dining experience in the area.
Imagine sitting in the same place of the haus Masters (Gropius Klee kandiniski Mucha Schlemmer Mies Von der Rohe) I went there yesterday, about 4:30, I didn’t have a reservation but I was trying my luck, they gave me a river view table but told me I have to move at six because it’s reserved I had a very nice meal and a fantastic view and a very powerful Bauhaus vibe I searched for pictures for the masters of Bauhaus in this restaurent but I couldn’t find , While it's difficult to find a definitive list of every single Bauhaus master who visited the Kornhaus Restaurant, the history and context of the building make it highly likely that many, if not all, of the masters who were active in Dessau would have gone there. Here's why: * Designed by a Bauhausler: The architect, Carl Fieger, was himself a prominent figure at the Bauhaus. His personal connection to the school and his work as a draftsman for Walter Gropius ensured a close relationship between the restaurant and the Bauhaus community. * A Symbol of Modernism: The Kornhaus was a public building that perfectly embodied the "New Building" style that the Bauhaus championed. It would have been a point of pride and interest for the architects, designers, and artists of the school, much like the main Bauhaus building and the Masters' Houses. * A Social Hub: As a popular and modern excursion restaurant situated in a scenic location on the Elbe River, the Kornhaus would have been a natural gathering place. The Bauhaus masters and their families lived and worked in Dessau, and a new, beautifully designed restaurant would have been a prime location for social outings, dinners, and events. * Collaborative Project: The fact that the interior was a collaborative effort, with lamps designed by Marianne Brandt and the color scheme handled by the Bauhaus wall painting workshop, shows that the school's artists and designers were directly involved in the project. This would have given them a vested interest in visiting and showing off their work. In short, while there may not be specific photographic evidence of, say, Wassily Kandinsky or Paul Klee dining there on a particular date, the Kornhaus was a significant project and a social landmark in Dessau during the Bauhaus's most productive years. It is almost certain that the masters, who were deeply engaged in shaping the city's modern identity, would have frequented it.

It’s a landmark place in Dessau with the historic building and stunning views on the water. Food and drinks were disappointing unfortunately. The goat cheese salad looked sad, although the cheese was good. We ordered specialty deserts from Kornhaus, and although served in a nice manner, they were average. The house made lemonade with maraquia had very artificial taste. Probably the best is just have a coffee there for the experience and the views.
Ira H — Google review
Amazing view of the Elbe, above-average prices, but the food is delicious, and the service is good, too. Two dark beers with cherry juice + 2 main courses with meat/fish costed us 50 euros. The portions were generous. Comparably simple, but tasty food. Maybe, you shouldn’t expect too much from this architecturally iconic place.
Slava S — Google review
Super nice venue, the view of the Elba is really nice, the food was top class, and the service was friendly and efficient.

It locates by the beautiful river side so you can enjoy the view from the window or it must be good outside seats in the summer. Food was pretty good. Even bread was tasty. Staff can speak English little bit but they tried to do their best and their service was very good.

Historical place museum
The Bauhaus Museum Dessau is a striking glass museum that showcases the history of the iconic art school, featuring ceramics and furniture. Visitors can enjoy young, sustainable cuisine and delicious home cooking at the on-site cafe, which offers soups, sandwiches, quiches, and changing daily dishes. The museum boasts one of the world's largest collections of Bauhaus design and architecture. It is recommended to visit in conjunction with other Bauhaus sites in Dessau for a holistic experience.
This museum is a must see for all Bauhaus enthusiasts! I wasn’t aware about the broad spectrum of the artists. It is not only about modern architecture. You may ask what else have they developed in the times of the ‘Weimarer Republic’ in Dessau and until the 1933? I love the place because it shows you the development of simplified furniture, various fonts, stylish lamps, wall papers, colorful pattern and more. Everything what almost every one of us uses in our daily life. Don’t forget to combine your visits with guided tours in the ‘Meisterhäuser’ and the ‘Bauhaus’ university.
Michael S — Google review
The Bauhaus Museum Dessau is a fascinating, if paradoxical, experience. It is a must-see for anyone interested in the movement, but it challenges one's expectations from the moment of arrival. The collection itself is nothing short of incredible, offering a comprehensive and deeply impressive look into the history, thought, and work of the Bauhaus school. The inclusion of original sliding plans and elevations is a particularly a standout feature, providing a tangible connection to the creative process of the masters. It is within this collection that the true spirit of Bauhaus lives. However, the architecture of the museum building presents a profound disappointment. From an outsider's point of view, it feels like an antithesis to the very principles it houses. The building is a sterile composition of glass and steel, a modern box that seems to abandon the core tenets of Bauhaus philosophy. For me, Bauhaus is not defined by these industrial materials alone, but by the thoughtful application of proportion and the golden ratio—a design heritage that can be traced back to the ancient temples of Egypt and Greece. This architectural language of harmony and carefully considered space feels entirely absent. The internal journey, however, tells a different, more compelling story, following the five-act structure of a classical drama. The visit begins with an introduction, a gentle and informative entry into the world of Bauhaus. The collection then builds, escalating into a rising action as you delve deeper into the works. The climax arrives as you encounter the core of the exhibition, a moment of profound revelation. It is this curated narrative, rather than the building's shell, that delivers the true essence of the Bauhaus legacy. Ultimately, while the architecture misses the mark, the Bauhaus Museum Dessau is a powerful experience. Its collection is a triumph of curatorial work, and the narrative flow it creates within the space is a testament to the enduring ideas of the school. Go for the art, and be prepared to be both impressed and provoked by the building that contains it.
Rma Y — Google review
The main reason to stop over in Dessau on my way to Berlin was to visit the new Bauhaus museum designed by a group of young architects from Barcelona. Both the building in itself and of course the collection are highly interesting to visit. I was particularly impressed by the access to most of the old drawings that you can consult. The only thing I really missed was an in-depth review of what happened during the nazi period and during the DDR era when some of the original Bauhaus teachers were forced to work for their oppressors. This summer of 2024 there is a separate exhibition on the nazi period in the Bauhaus museum in Weimar, but even this is rather meager. The museum shop is of limited interest.
Sebastian R — Google review
A nice 'small' exhibition with references from the founding to the 'road to the Nazi era.' However, I would have liked at least some 'critical context' on the 'subordinate role of women' in the Bauhaus 'male society' (or did I perhaps miss that?)
Michel C — Google review
Fantastic museum, great commentary. Delicious coffee and cake. Friendly staff. Crap pop music in the shop: come on folks, raise your game. Would a bit of Steve Reich, Brian Eno, or John Cage be so terribly difficult?
William B — Google review
A wonderful new museum which was built as part of celebrations to mark the centenary of the Bauhaus School, which was located in Dessau in the 1920s. It is huge - costing Euro 30m to build. It provides excellent display spaces for very many Bauhaus objects and artefacts.
Roger M — Google review
Amazing buildings and impressive exhibitions about the Bauhaus. The ground floor huge space consists museum shop and a cafe. 1st floor consists of an exhibition. You can start on one side and finish on the other side of the building. This a round exhibition. The basement has lockers and a WC. I paid 9 euros for the entrance.

Located 4 kilometers south of the city center, along Franzstrasse, Heidestrasse, and Damaschkestrasse in Dessau-Torten district, Siedlung Törten is an impressive example of Bauhaus architecture. This townhouse complex holds significant cultural value as it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing. Only open from March to October, visitors can explore this remarkable landmark daily from 10:00 to 17:00.
Siedlung Törten My visit to the Siedlung Törten housing estate in Dessau was a powerful conclusion to the Bauhaus story. After seeing the artistic hub of the main building and the experimental single-family home of Haus am Horn, Törten demonstrates the ultimate goal of the movement: to use modern technology and design to solve real-world problems. This settlement, a direct vision of Walter Gropius, is a masterpiece of social architecture that aimed to provide affordable, well-designed homes for the working class. What makes Törten so remarkable is its pioneering use of prefabrication and standardization. Gropius and his team developed a system of mass-producing components, like window frames and door units, allowing the houses to be built with an efficiency and speed that was revolutionary for the late 1920s. Walking through the neighborhood, you can see how this modular approach created a cohesive and harmonious community. Each house, while part of a larger whole, retains a functional beauty. The designs are simple, clean, and entirely focused on providing comfortable, livable spaces. The Siedlung Törten is more than just a collection of buildings; it's a testament to the social conscience of the Bauhaus. The houses were not just boxes to be lived in, but were designed with a sense of community and dignity. Seeing these homes today, still standing and still inhabited, is an incredibly moving experience. It’s a physical manifestation of a belief that good design should be accessible to everyone, not just an elite few. It beautifully proves that the radical theories of the Bauhaus were not just academic ideals, but a practical, enduring blueprint for a better world.

Nestled along the serene Ebertallee, Meisterhaus Kandinsky | Klee stands as a striking example of Bauhaus architecture, showcasing a harmonious blend of simplicity and vibrant color. This unique property was home to two artistic families who creatively shared their living space, resulting in rooms that each boast distinct colors and views while maintaining an overall mirrored design. The exterior is characterized by its stark white and black palette, which beautifully contrasts with the colorful interiors that invite exploration.

Historical landmark
Mausoleum der Fürsten zu Anhalt/Dessau is the final resting place of the Dukes of Anhalt, constructed between 1894 and 1898 with a captivating blend of Neoclassical and Renaissance Revival architecture. The mausoleum boasts a majestic dome towering at 43 meters high. Its surroundings include a park that doubles as Dessau's zoo, offering visitors an opportunity to explore both history and nature in one visit.
(Translated by Google) The Dessau Mausoleum, formerly the burial place of the Dukes of Anhalt, was built between 1894 and 1898 near Georgium Park at the request of Frederick I of Anhalt. The architect Franz Heinrich Schwechten and the master builder Teubner were commissioned by the High Renaissance architects. August Hooff designed the surrounding park between 1894 and 1896. A listed historical monument, it is the last domed building in Dessau since the bombings of World War II. Until 1958, the mausoleum's crypt housed the burial places of members of the Dukes of Anhalt. That year, for political reasons, the GDR authorities secretly removed the coffins, and the remains were placed in a mass grave in the Ziebigk Cemetery. In November 2019, following discussions between the state of Saxony-Anhalt, the city of Dessau, and the House of Anhalt, they were buried in a ceremony in the central crypt of the former city church and palace. During the GDR era, the mausoleum served as a warehouse for the fruit and vegetable trade and for the Vaccine Institute. In the 1970s, it also temporarily served as a summer kiosk for the zoo. In the 1980s, the mausoleum underwent several renovations, but its deterioration did not prevent it from falling into disrepair. After the restoration of the dome and roof in 1986, further work followed between 1990 and 1993, and again in 1999 to prevent water infiltration. Despite these interventions, a complete renovation, estimated at five million euros, is still necessary. In 2007, an association was created to fund and develop the building's use. It organizes tours and events open to the public. The mausoleum is also used as a venue for film screenings, theater performances, and orchestral concerts during the summer. Since 2017, the renovation work has been supported by a youth construction workshop.

It is a small museum, but it has some very interesting artifacts. I loved the fact that you can get inside the Ju-52, and examine the F13 and J1 closely. A small gift shop is also available. Outside, a small collection of soviet jets, that can also be closely studied. Friendly staff.

A really cool museum about Junker and all his contributions to aviation as well as other fields of life.
Muhammad A — Google review
Very nice museum with an exceptional collection! Unfortunately it stands as a clear symbol of the failures in Sachsen-Anhalt's duty to integration of its migrants. Our Dessauer neighbors must understand they are being lied to that "migrants don't want to work". I, personally, have been seeking employment since arrival as a museum archivist or docent - my career of several decades in my home country. This museum could be even more lovely, factually accurate, and attractive to tourists in my skilled hands. What Professor Junkers saw for Dessau's future is a vision that we all should know. He believed in every one of us - and when we believed in ourselves, we created masterpieces that are still unmatched today. Considering that the restrictions on my employment rights allow someone to pay me only 85 cents per hour and I have a work history in the archives of National institutions, I'm quite sure my long-term unemployment isn't some mistake by either myself or the various archival institutions of Sachsen-Anhalt. Please think of this when certain factions among us like to point the finger at the individual. Statistics show that work refusal is shockingly rare in the migrant community, and not even all that common within the Citizenship demographics. As long as there are cobwebs on Tante Ju, you will know the State leadership is telling lies.

Unfortunately nobody speaks English there, also exposition is not multilingual. On top of that all places like interior of a plane or simulator were closed. Big disappointment. Outdoor exhibits look not really cared of, similar the surroundings. Overpriced for what it offers.

The park Park Luisium is a remarkably attractive and picturesque location, marred by numerous pathways being unavailable due to necessary repairs following the floods of 2013. However, it is anticipated that within a few months, the park will regain its former splendor and radiate an awe-inspiring abundance once again. Its proximity to the city makes it conveniently accessible and creates a cozy atmosphere suitable for leisurely afternoon strolls.
A beautiful park where you can walk and relax. It’s better to do in the evening because there are few people there, just nature, birds and horses.

Luisium is a palace and landscape garden in Dessau-Roßlau, Germany. It is a part of Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 1774 work started on a small palace in the style of an English country house, which Leopold III, Duke of Anhalt-Dessau built for his wife Margravine Louise of Brandenburg-Schwedt, thus the name Luisium. The small park has a most charming house and some simple but noteworthy follies in its grounds. Go on a Sunday when a local quintet can sometimes be found playing classical music in one of the arbours. Easy walking and easily photographable

Very good zoo which has an extremely low entry fee with 3.5 Euro. Best parts are the feeding options for little and big children. You can buy a full bag for a euro at the gate or use a vending machine at the animal pet areas for 10 cents. You can stay for 2-3 hours and even the food and drink prices in the park are great. Animals were nice and the park was clean aswell.

Best place to go with kids. You can spend your whole day in this area... Lovely quiet area with natural environment and chirping of birds. The Alter Räucherturm is a fascinating destination for those who appreciate graffiti, urban exploration, and the allure of forgotten places. While the structure itself may not be conventionally beautiful, its charm lies in the vibrant street art that adorns it. Climbing the 130 steps to reach the top rewards visitors with a panoramic view of Dessau, making it an adventure worth undertaking. However, caution is advised as some steps are loose and broken glass can be found on the viewing platform.
Cool place, specially the rooftop.. You can seat on the stools and breathe peacefully. Even you can see almost full dessau in front of your eyes.. A pure 360° view. Climbing up 8 storied building will not disappoint you. Loved the place and the environment too.
Muhammad ( — Google review
This place holds an obscene amount of memories and attachment to me. As a kid, my father used to take me here every now and then, after visiting my grandparents or getting ice cream in the city center. Back then, and to this day, the view is amazing. One of the few spots that give a panoramic overlook of the entire city, it really is a great place to spend an evening with friends or a partner. Its height and relative distance to the surrounding housing makes it remote enough to hang out with friends and listen to music, or engage in "recreational activities" without disturbing others, while still being central enough in the city to be easily reachable by pretty much any means. The entire facade of the building is covered in streetart and grafitti, stickers and the residue of social encounters. Personally, i find it adds to the atmosphere. Ive had a lot of pivotal character developement here, and it will always stay one of my favorite places to go if i need some space from the world around me. All that being said, it does have its flaws; with it being right next to the train tracks, it does get rather loud when ICEs pass or locomotives are moved. People with a fear of heights may also not have the easiest time with this place, since it is... well, a tower. Some people may also be put off by the occasional trash around the actual viewing platform, and though ive personally never really been bothered by it, you wanna be really careful if you come here with children, as theres usually a broken bottle or two spread around the corners of the platform. Lastly, the thing that is most offputting to me is that the stairs along the side of the tower arent very well maintained. It is not uncommon for one or more of the first couple steps to be missing from one day to the other, making it difficult, if not dangerous to descend them in the dark. Once again, i am not too bothered by this, but people who arent familiar with the setting or have trouble walking may want to take this into consideration. Overall, the place is a little run down, but that, combined with its relative remoteness makes it one of my favorite hangout spots in the city.

(Translated by Google) I don't know whether you should travel to Dessau because of the smoking tower. But if you're nearby and have the necessary breath, the climb is definitely worth it - especially if the weather is good. You will be rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view of Dessau. You can like the environment or not, including the numerous graffiti. But maybe that's what makes it so special. It could be a little more well-kept - and it would be a good start if visitors would take their souvenirs with them. Interestingly, even after so many years of retirement, you can still smell the smoke.

Unfortunately, the place cannot be recommended to parents with children, there are broken pieces of glass everywhere on the viewing platform and people have often done their business in the corners, judging by the smell. I thought it was an experience worth climbing out of the tower. (Original) Wahnsinns Aussicht!
