Old Beechworth Gaol, located on Ford Street, is part of the impressive Justice Precinct listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. The site was originally a government camp and later became a police reserve in 1856. Constructed of local honey-colored granite, the complex includes several historic buildings such as the former Telegraph Office, Court House, Police Station, Chinese Protectors Office, and Gold Wardens Office.
The Gaol tour in Beechworth is definitely worth a visit! Our tour guide was fantastic—friendly, knowledgeable, and had a great sense of humor that made the experience even more enjoyable. It was fascinating to hear the stories of those imprisoned there, especially the infamous Ned Kelly and his gang. The history and stories brought the place to life in such an engaging way. If you’re visiting Beechworth, this tour should be at the top of your list! Highly recommended!

Had an awesome time at the Old Beechworth Gaol tour! Graham was a great guide and really knew his stuff/made it super interesting. Loved the Kelly family stories, but also learned heaps about the gaol’s history. Wish there was an opportunity to keep looking after the tour.
Chantelle M — Google review
We took the kids to the Beechworth Gaol during the school holidays. The tour was well priced and it was easy to book online. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and was able to answer all of the questions from the group. We highly recommend the tour for all ages. It's a great part of the local history.

fantastic old goal...guided tours run almost every hour and is the only way to checkout the inside of the prison something to remember ...first tour at 10am .. HM Prison Beechworth was built on the site of Beechworth's first stockade. It was designed by Victoria's Public Works Department and constructed using local granite that was quarried with prison labour... Beechworth was one of nine panopticon prisons built in Victoria. Construction began in 1857 and the prison opened in 1860, though was incomplete and only had single cells for 36 prisoners. The capacity doubled when the building was completed in 1864. Beechworth initially housed male and female prisoners. Female prisoners were assigned washing and needlework for government departments. Between 1865 and 1881, eight executions were carried out at the prison.Ned Kelly served six months at the prison in 1870-71 for assault. He was again held there during his committal trial for murder in 1880. Kelly's mother, Ellen and two associates of the Kelly family also served sentences at the prison the late 1870s for the attempted murder of Constable Alexander Fitzpatrick. Twenty suspected sympathisers of Kelly were held in 1879 in an attempt to limit support to the Kelly gang. The prison's iron gates were installed due to fears there may be attempts to break the sympathisers out of the prison.

Love the hands-on experience of visiting the jail 💗 was a bit cold so we got some food at the cafe and got a very informative book about the prison’s history from the cafe too 📚Love it, will definitely come back next year!!!
Chloe Z — Google review
We did this tour on the recommendation from friends, and it did not disappoint. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and had a good sense of humour. We really enjoyed the history and discovered how hard prison was for naughty people even up to the mid 1990s.
Jan B — Google review
The tour guide was awesome, knew his stuff and history and loved telling the story. Gail only closed in the early 2000s so some infamous people looked up here. Kelly History deep with his Mum locked up for a few years.
Andrew N — Google review
Beechworth Gaol had not only the Kelly & gang incarcerated here but also Kelly's mentor & tutor - the "gentlemen" Bushranger Harry Power. Somehow Harry Power's tales are subsumed by Ned Kelly's but it is just as interesting. Other inmates here included a whole bunch of modern day tax evaders & Melbourne's infamous underbelly crims. The newer additions include the conjugal visits area in the gaolers yard as you make your way inside on the right & a swimming pool area - gated off on the left. I expected the Gaol to be bigger but it is small with about 110 to 123 inmates capacity. There is the heritage Kelly era wing, the newer ones plus the Hangman's room & the Noose. A group of us - pre-purchased online tix for the 10 am tour Sun 23 Feb recently. A huge crowd of almost 40. The next tour only had a handful - so perhaps this is a better timeslot. Free parking in front of entry gates & also side street. There is a Cafe Truck in the entry yard too & a nice reception re-purposed area & toilets inside before tour starts. Tour ran for 45 mins & Guide thankfully used audio speaker. Typical Oz humour delivered with full on ocker tones- which you wonder if overseas visitors understood. Exercise yard - with the metal mirror (you will find out why) is also the site of 1800s hard labour (breaking granite & carting it), the chain gang tales all made for the grim reality not only the gold rush lawless period but also the 20th century penitentiary system. You get more of the blood & gore penitentiary stories under the pentagonal wooden roofed & similar shaped guard room inside. The replica Kelly gang armour suite is lined up here (by this time it is an oft repeated sight for us having started the Kelly trail at Glenrowan.). For dedicated Ned Kelly & Harry Power stories - do the Ned Kelly Trail tour run by the Visitor's Centre. Beats me how the confined cells & dire deeds of yore can be re-purposed into arts, entertainment & hospitality...Takes it beyond the "dark" tourism into the 21st century enlightenment I suppose. One way of maintaining historical sites like this for future generations but the essence of harsh reality of colonial past would be lost surely. Whatever works to make it a viable site. Pentridge Prison is already a popular re-purposed hub but ..er..rrr..rr - it ain't for me.

The Beechworth Honey Shop, a historic establishment dating back to 1888, is a must-visit destination in the heart of Beechworth. This iconic shop offers an educational experience for families, showcasing the history of beekeeping and allowing visitors to sample various local honey varieties. Additionally, guests can take a free tour to learn about the fascinating story behind Beechworth Honey.
The Beechworth Honey Shop is definitely worth a visit! The store offers a wonderful variety of products, from skincare items to an impressive selection of honey in different flavours. It’s a great spot to explore, and you can really tell that it’s a must-visit when you’re in Beechworth. The staff are friendly and always willing to help, making the experience even better. Whether you’re looking for something unique to take home or just want to learn more about honey, this shop is a lovely stop on your trip.

This is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited. If you’re going to Beechworth, you can’t miss it! It’s such a lovely spot where you’ll discover a wide variety of honey flavours, honey drinks, honey creams, honey candies, and candles made from 100% beeswax. There’s also a tiny room that feels like a mini museum and a special space where you can write a letter to the bees — it’s especially made for kids, but honestly, it’s irresistible for everyone. You’ll find so many charming little things! Buy Australian honey — support Australian beekeepers! 🐝
Luz S — Google review
You can get Beechworth Honey from most shops, but it is best to go to the "dinkum original" shop here in Beechworth. The shop is large, and full of honey and other produce. It is well worth popping in. Recommended! Thank you.

A must stop in Beachworth! My friends and I spent ages tasting all the different types of honey and never felt rushed. Very passionate, knowledgeable and helpful staff. Wide range of products to get including honey, candles, sparkling honey drinks, lollies, balms and more.

GOOD OPTION FOR THAT ELUSIVE BEECHWORTH SOUVENIR! Large shop many items associated with Beechworth honey - naturally the honey itself with many options, honeycomb, honey utensils, chocolate blocks with honey.. honey yoghurts... the list goes on! People with mobility issues will be fine here as its all on on even floor. Staff are pleasant and helpful.

I received my 3 glasses brooches today and they are all divine. The highland cow, cat and sunflower. The magnets are super strong and the pins are also easy use. It's very light to wear you don't notice its there. Holds glasses like a champion. Just gorgeous! Thank you

The Burke Museum in Beechworth is a historical and natural history museum housed in a building from 1857. It's named after Robert O'Hara Burke, known for the tragic Burke and Wills expedition. The museum features over 30,000 historic items spanning 150 years, including Aboriginal weapons, 19th-century taxidermy, and Gold Rush artifacts. The Ned Kelly Vault offers an extensive exhibition on the infamous bushranger.
Such friendly staff. They go out of their way to share more history was great. Nice size museum of history loved the little street set up soon many pieces of history to take in. Worth a look for a small fee .
Kristy E — Google review
A must-go place if you are keen on the history of gold rush. The museum collected thousands of old items from local residents which were put behind shop windows to restore the town street in the late 1800s. The taxidermy exhibitions under maintenance the day I visited which was a pity.

My mother told us that this place is a must visit. And guess what, Mum was right. We loved our visit here. Fascinating history on a fascinating part of the state and country. Beautifully curated throughout. And thank you so much to the local gentleman who gave us a wonderful overview of the building and the exhibits and the terrific tips on what to see in the local area

This is truely a hidden gem. Much like the tradis its much bigger inside. Don't let the first room fool you into thinking that is all. A wonderful side room has prominent people of the local area as well as at the back a small replica of an old main street.
Paul H — Google review
I’m so glad we made the effort to visit here when we dropped into town. Such and incredible story of why the town set up the museum. Great displays but my favourite was the street shops and their period displays. Great work. Keep it up.

small museum in Beechwood...most exhibitions are from the Beechwood area with an extensive collection of taxidermy animals including an extraordinary Thylacine Tassie tiger from the Beechworth area ..they are all over 100 years old but in great condition..probaly not everyone's cup of tea but its history ...also a great selections of rocks and minerals and some fossils ...they have also set up a street scene from old Beechworth times ...not expensive and doesn't take that long to get around so worth a visit when in the area
Warren B — Google review
Fantastic little museum. Only $5 for adults or $3 concession. Has a fascinating collection of local rocks and native fauna taxidermy. Some in better condition than others. Has a recreated historical Beechworth alley where you can view objects from a hundred years ago. A newer instalment has a more personal analysis of the town. A historic citizen and a modern citizen are placed next to each other and their story is told. Sometimes it works more than others.

Government Buildings
Historic Sites
The Beechworth Powder Magazine, built in 1859, was a response to Victorian Government regulations on black powder storage. Miners were required by law to leave bulk gunpowder in this solid granite building overnight. It features safety measures such as wooden nails and lightning rods to direct any potential explosion upwards. Located just a short distance from the town center, it's an interesting historical site for visitors to explore before embarking on their walks or scenic routes back to Beechworth.
The Beechworth Powder Magazine is located a short distance from the centre of town at the end of Camp St It was constructed in 1859 by T Dawson and Company at a cost of £1500... The Powder Magazine stored black-powder used for blasting on the goldfields, and miners were required by law to leave bulk gunpowder in the building... The unique design of the building of solid granite, with a slate roof to ensure that any explosion would be minimised by the building’s structure and up out the roof... This amazing small building behind a solid wall is one to be seen well worth your time
Matt I — Google review
Another wonderful example of Victoria's gunpowder magazine, a telling relic of Victoria's gold heritage. Magnificent granite walls around the compound and a neat skilfully built stone building.
Trevor M — Google review
A historic building that makes Beechworth “historic”. Part of the towns mining history and is mostly observable from the outside. Sounds like the building was restored in the 80s but not sure when or why it would open up. The carpark has a bin and is the starting point for a great 7km loop around the neighbouring historic park.
Jarrod B — Google review
Not a lot so see just walk around the outside. But it’s an important old historic building preserved by the national trust. Built with thick granite blocks it’s quite impressive. It also has a big granite wall around it. Lovely area it is situated. Easy short walk to the building.
Shez H — Google review
Unfortunately not open to the public, however you can walk around it. I think it's about 150 years old
Mark D — Google review
If you're taking the scenic route back to Beechworth, it's worthwhile to have a quick stop off to see this bit of history. There is also a bush path leading to who knows where as I didn't take it.
Don T — Google review
Not sure about the stated opening hours. They state it opens 10am & closes 3pm, however I was there at 7pm and the door/gate was open. The sign also states access to the grounds only, so it’s not like the hours are for entering the powder magazine itself. We had a quick walk around & then walked over to the Beechworth cascade. On the way there is a creepy little abandoned home on the small hill. People must go at night as you can smell the put out fireplace & it was lined with soft drink cans. There must’ve been a house fire as the bedroom was pitch black and the floor was missing. A simple home - lounge room, bedroom, kitchen & bathroom/laundry. Would love to know the history of this place!
Bella B — Google review
Historic Beechworth, has a lot to offer, the powder magazine, is another example of the history of Beechworth and the mining process. The magazine was built in 1859 to store the powder as part of the mining process, it's interesting that the roof was built in such a way that just in case, just maybe, if the building blew up the blast would go upwards very smart architecture. There really is not a lot to see that's for sure you can have a walk around the building and like everyone else I'm sure we would love to see is it just as bland inside and is it outside. It makes for some great photos with granite walls and building. On our last adventure we got to see the old cottage that was near the carpark, it would be great to see the trust, take possession of the cottage and restore it to allow tourist to see what a miner's hut looked like. With such a modern world it would be great to show our young generations how it used to be. When we visited in Dec 2022 the gorge drive was not accessible due to the recent rain had destabilized a bridge, you could not drive through, but people were leaving the cars in the car park and taking a walk in. it is a 5Km drive so beware it's not a simple short walk. the kids loved the cottage and having a squizzy around the building. hope you once again enjoy the visit here. xx Handley Family

Stopped in with my 4 yr old about a month ago. This store has the goods! From the classics, the new and popular, you will be able to enjoy some sweets from here. We ended up settling on a mixed bag of Halloween themed treats and I can say they certainly did not last long! Store is very busy and particularly narrow. Not pram friendly. Parking available on street and timed
Maria S — Google review
“ shabby Alice in wonderland “ Honestly Each chocolate does not taste that good. So I completely ignored sweets and just buying tins and some garden decoration. Store atmosphere is cute but dusty. Felt like manmade wonderland. Things are everywhere without any organisation or done by not the professional store designer. It is ok because here is not in Paris ( of course ). If you want to have better taste chocolate, close your lips and go get lint chocolate from Coles. This is the chocolate store in the country area, that’s all.

The Beechworth Sweet Candy store on Camp St is a must go to place while visiting Beechworth!!! The first thing to hit you as you walk through the door is that delicious intoxicating scent, WOW, I'm still dreaming about the smell of it awaking my senses, they have sweets treats, Chocolates, and Candy everything you may imagine they put Willy Wonka to shame, sorry Willy! The store is nearly overwhelming with the choice of that sweet tasting candy 🤤 I thought I died and when to chocolate heaven! It is a beautiful store with a great checkered floor to match and super clean! To the staff member who had taken our photo, we can not thank you for your kindness and your dedication to making your customers happy. One picture I have added, we hope it reminds you of the great service you have shown us! Don't forget the seagull people and your amazing spider picture it was a pleasure meeting you!. Dating back to 1858, this impressive building complex was constructed with local honey-colored granite and includes several historic structures such as the former Telegraph Office, Police Station, Chinese Protectors Office, and Gold Wardens Office. Today, it stands as a museum showcasing Beechworth's rich history including its involvement in gold mining and World War II.
A great historic precinct with so much history. We did the tour of the courthouse for $10 per adult. Very good value with a captioned presentation on the walls going through 4 cases heard in the courthouse. After the presentation you are free to wonder the rooms and even dress in judges garb if desired. Natasha was our guide who was very knowledgeable and spoke in a clear voice. Well worth visiting particularly if you want to learn more about Ned Kelly and his associates. The law library is also very impressive.

If you want experience the deeper history of Beechworth, then the Court house is a great place to start. Beechworth has an amazing number of little places you can take the kids or yourself to go and have a visit to learn about Beechworth. The court House is of course famous for its association with Ned Kelly, but it also is an amazing place to come and see a historic building, built in 1958 and was a working courthouse right up to 1989, this courthouse has been an interesting and integral part of the community just as much as the Beechworth Goal Has. I love how you can almost access nearly every room of the courthouse minus the lady's balcony and a storeroom. But the Library happened to be our favourite room, it was filled with old law books and just had that nostalgic feel about it, the kids loved the library and the holding cells. (They used to have an audio spill that used to play but that feature was not there anymore. It did make for a great way to experience the court room.) The kids love being able to explore and sit where the judge and lawyers would sit and they did a little court play of their own. It was cheap to get in costing us a family of 6 $10. you could pay a bit extra for a guided tour which would probably have been great. There were souvenirs you could purchase for reasonable prices. Accessibility: The courthouse is wheelchair friendly, and you can access most of the courthouse bar the cells I believe. The staff are welcoming and encourage all to come and take part in the history of Beechworth. Great place for kids and anyone to come and visit.

This place is fantastic! Cheap to visit. The court house is in original condition as it was on the last day is was used. Lots of interesting information to read. Ned Kellys trial began here in August 1880 before it was transferred to Melbourne. Don’t forget to go around the rear of the building where one of the old stable buildings still stand. Also the old stone lock up with would be terrible to be locked up in. The whole area is so interesting and next door is the telegraph office to visit as well.
Shez H — Google review
am assuming due to couple of luxury hotels the beach has been really well maintained. Which is a really good point. I don't remember spending almost the entire day at any other beach but this. A beach worth visiting and spending time. Take a nice dip in the Arabian Sea. lie down on the beach get sun bathed and have yummy food on the shacks there. p.s Our favourite shack was "Gloria". Mr Satish was a polite and very helpful host. Tried the others as well (Misha and Amish) but we found this the best. Gloria shack is between Misha and Amish, close to the beach opening of Mahindra Club.

This building & later improved facade is a fitting place for a Visitor's Centre. Staff are helpful & welcoming. Place also retails locally made goods & detailed touring maps. Of course you can get a lot of free maps & info pamphlets. 4 hour free parking available on both sides of the road. Town Hall is in the historical precinct & only a short walk from Beechworth centre. Everything of interest in Beechworth is walkable distance from town centre unless venturing out to Woolshed Falls. Buy your tix here for the 45 mins Ned Kelly Walking Trail tour which also starts here. This is a good way of learning a lot & getting a feel for the harsh reality of a small gold rush colonial settlement, Ned Kelly's life & incarceration. You can also buy tix here for the Courthouse immersive Ned Kelly Trial. Visit website or enquire ahead. Town Hall itself is a lovely building that reminded me of Ballarat's which is also used as a Visitor's Centre. Beechworth is one of those charming country towns where the pace of life slows, you get to see a magpie jauntily hopping across the road in front of the oncoming car & listen to the soothing sound of Church bells tolling on Sunday reverberating through the town...

Staff were extremely helpful, did the Gold & Ned Kelly walking tours as well as the Courthouse experience. The lady staff member advised me on the best way to get the 3 experiences as well as the Gaol tour done in the shortest time. Also helped me find accommodation at short notice. Dave my tour guide on both walking tours was very knowledgeable, answered all my questions & valued my opinions. Overall, a very enjoyable experience, highly recommend.

One of the smaller visitor centres we’ve visited, but nonetheless, just as helpful and friendly. The visitor centre is actually within the Town Hall with the hall itself open for viewing.

The ladies in the office were very helpful, offering us local tips to enhance our stay. The Ned Kelly walking tour was an easy stroll through town and good amount of time. Chris the tour guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. Would recommend!

Very helpful staff. Lots of local information available inside. There's a chapel at the back which must be well aged. The honour roll on the walls shows just how much the local population contributed in both world wars.

Mayday Escape Rooms in Beechworth offers an immersive and thrilling experience for families and groups. Participants must collaborate to solve puzzles, find clues, and crack codes within themed rooms like The Pirates Booty or The Curse of Tutankhamun. Located within the old asylum, this attraction provides a unique setting that adds to the excitement. Visitors from Sydney found the experience worth traveling for, praising the cleverly designed puzzles that offer a multi-layered challenge and an immersive environment.
Went yesterday with my boyfriend and his son. It was so fun watching them being so puzzled since it was their first time doing an escape room. We tried the butcher room and the effects are jump scare that it made me scream. Must work as a team for clues. Good thing my boyfriend is really into it. His son gave up lol. But cracked it with some hints. Definitely a try!

We did the butcher shop and really liked it. A friendly team looks after you. Immersive, strong story line, excellent puzzles with great, realistic effects and a generally more unusual theme. Think Curium. Some minor issues with calibration wasted a few minutes, so if you think you got it but "computer says no" best check with the game host via walkie talkie.

I highly recommend this. A truly immersive and atmospheric escape room, themed around the location it occupies (the old asylum!). It captures the details no other place possibly can. The staff are amazing and friendly, and they stock an amazing range of escape room style games in their shop. Definitely worth a visit whether you are driving past or visiting Beechworth for the day. Can’t wait to escape all the rooms!

Fantastic experience at Mayday Escape Rooms. We did Room 745, it was challenging (for us 😂) but heaps of fun, with some really great thought-out puzzles. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and were genuinely enthusiastic. Highly recommended.

My friends and I went on a little regional Victoria escape room tour and these rooms were the highlight of our trip. The space that they are built in is so highly immersive and the puzzles and design fit so well. The owners Chris and Tim were awesome and their passion for the industry and creating unique experiences is more than apparent. I only wish there were more rooms for us to play! Definitely worth the drive.

My 13 year old and I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of solving the mystery of Room 745! Challenging enough to keep it exciting, yet still made us really think! All the staff were amazing, especially owners Tim and Chris. Just an exceptional night out ❤️❤️❤️

Having now played just about every escape room in regional Vic I can confidently say the offerings at Mayday were my favourite of the bunch! Being designed and built inside the old Beechworth Asylum is such a genius and immersive idea that really sets these guys apart from other venues. All 3 rooms here were designed with an endless amount of love and charm and it shows from the moment you walk in. Owners Chris and Tim were so accommodating and amazing to chat to all day. It's clear just how passionate they are about their line of work. I can't wait to see what they build next! 11/10.

Took my kids and my niece and nephew here during school holidays. It was my first escape room ever - so a bit apprehensive with 4 kids - and it was challenging but we had so much fun. We did the butcher room. Many thanks to the organisers for letting us go a bit overtime to finish it! Definitely would do again in future

Nestled in the picturesque town of Beechworth, The Ox and Hound Bistro offers a delightful dining experience with a focus on rustic French and Italian cuisine. Chef Sean Ford's dedication to traditional values is evident in his uncomplicated yet delicious classic bistro fare, featuring dishes like chestnut fettuccine with rabbit ragu and barramundi topped with caponata.
Been here twice, haven’t been for a while, not easy with busy tweens, but when she was a tots, so easy to bring her out! We like be on road trip, so one of the best to try when in Beechworth, recommend!!

What a lovely evening, both waiters on the night were super helpful and answered all my concerns..I am coeliac and I was assured that the restaurant was aware of cross contamination etc. The menu was assuring, I chose the duck and it was beautiful. Print to the main, they brought out some home cooked gluten free bread. Yum..🤤. My husband who is deprived of gluten in the home, enjoyed the rabbit ragu. We shared a gf panna cotta. Beautiful town, lovely restaurant , and great service. 10/10.. and, I was able to purchase a loaf of bread the next day.. thank so much, lynelle

Beautiful place to have a nice romantic dinner while you’re in high country. Small intimate space. The menu is based on lots of local produce to go with local wines. Perfectly cooked, well balanced delicious food. Loved the Rabbit fettuccine and the chestnuts soup.

We held our 50th wedding anniversary at the Enoteca after we had left it to our daughter and son to find us an appropriate location. They didn't let us down. Restaurant
Provenance is a revered establishment with elegant arched windows and cozy wooden furnishings. It has received two hats in The Age Good Food Guide, making it a sought-after destination. The degustation menu is highly recommended, offering an unforgettable dining experience complemented by carefully selected wines from the North East region and optional sake pairings. Owner-chef Michael Ryan's cuisine is described as Japanese-influenced, blending contemporary design and textures with the finest local and seasonal ingredients.
We were fortunate to eat at Provenance on a quiet Monday night. We enjoyed the meal immensely. So many varied tiny dishes with a fabulous array of tasting. Highlights for me were the whipped roe with pickled cucumber, the fish skewer with pickled daikon, and the rice pudding with stewed apple (I’m a sucker for rice pudding). She mentions the bbq squid and the sashimi with beetroot and pomegranate. I enjoyed a local Vermentino and a Tempranillo. A memorable experience - reflecting a lot of care, skill and imagination. ❤️
R B — Google review
Phenomenal meal. I am a communications professional who is lost for words to describe how amazing the meal was. In over 14 dishes served there was not one that wasn't perfect. There was a number of dishes I wouldn't have ordered for myself as I wouldn't have thought I would like it, only to have them and realise I was completely wrong as they were spectacular. This restaurant deserves every perfect review they receive.
Curtis H — Google review
Stay: Absolutely treat to be spending 2 nights here The entrance and front yard and the smart use of a heritage building give you a real unique combination of European charm and modern Japanese decor on the interior. Our Saturday morning came with a full in-room breakfast with locally sourced ingredients. Highly recommended for a weekend retreat. 5/5 Food: The restaurant, with its prestigious 2-hatted status, set high expectations, but the experience didn't fully meet them. I can only speak to the summer menu during our January stay. Highlight for me was the dessert with cherries, fig leaf gelato and almond jelly. Some of the dishes are on the saltier side and lack balance. But all in all, refined and showed elements of fusion Japanese cuisine, but it fell short of the excellence expected from a 2-hatted establishment. 4/5
Anthony C — Google review
I highly recommend this place! It’s my partner’s and my favorite local restaurant for celebrating special occasions. The food is the best Japanese fusion cuisine I’ve ever had. Each dish is beautifully presented in the traditional kaiseki ryori style—small plates reminiscent of a fine multi-course Japanese meal—but with a creative and respectful Western twist. Having eaten a lot of Japanese food, I found this truly impressive! The service is warm and welcoming, and the restaurant’s design is intimate, thoughtfully detailed, and full of character. Thank you, and we can’t wait to return!

We had the absolute pleasure of dining here on our visit to Bright. The food was well portioned and inventive and well presented. Every dish was made with care and showcased not just produce of the region but the chef’s skill. Staff were helpful and conscientious without being obsequious. The desert was not much to look at but absolutely blew my mind! We will be back!
Evee C — Google review
Very average food for the $170/head set menu and loads of pickled vegetables (which meant my wife couldn’t eat half the dishes even though she mentioned dietary requirements, it often meant she missed a protein dish and just had daikon instead). They are certainly taking advantage of their reputation. Far better modern Japanese interpretations in Daylesford or Bright.
Scott P — Google review
Loved the way four little dishes were served in three ensuing bento boxes. Removed that oooh ah of 12 individual dishes. With all those flavors and ideas obs there were going to be things you liked better than other but that seemed to be the culinary journey. Delicious little puddings to finish, as well. It’s expensive and the owner/chef/waiter was a bit off hand but you are there for the food and with luck, good friends, like we were. We had a great time

Beechworth Berries, located in Beechworth, Victoria, is a family-friendly destination offering various activities for all ages. Visitors can enjoy picking and eating fresh berries, exploring the nearby bushland, or trying their hand at gold panning along the banks of Beech Creek. The farm also provides an educational experience about sustainable farming practices and traditional Australian country life.
The place is easy to find with parking. Staff are friendly and helpful. They offer pick your own and takeaway. They have chickens and cute flower gardens everywhere. Pretty reasonable prices, you only have to pay for what you pick. Some small things to keep in mind is sunnys, sunscreen, a hat and pockets. Would highly recommend.
Sue D — Google review
If I could give less than 1 star I would. I visited this farm over the weekend and I was so appalled at the pricing and way that they operate that I left without picking berries. I have been to many berries farms before which are traditionally ran by the same rules, you pick berries, you weigh them at the end and you pay for what you pick. We arrived with 4 adults and 3 little kids. This place was going to charge all of us just to enter, then everyone who entered had to pick a minimum amount of strawberries. The kids had to pick a minimum of 250gm and the adults 500gms. We did not want almost 3kgs of strawberries so asked if the kids could just pick and the adults watch, we were told no, everyone who enters has to pay. This is a very strange business model for a berry picking farm and takes away from the culture of community and offering a fun activity for the kids. I understand this is a business and needs to operate but I'm sorry $14 for 350gm of frozen berries is insane. We left without picking any berries, very disappointed. This place has become a money grab! Very sad to see.
Samara C — Google review
We absolutely loved this place for strawberry picking! There’s no entrance fee, and the staff were incredibly kind, taking the time to chat with us!! The strawberries were amazing—both in taste and size! The best part was that it’s dog-friendly, so Ollie (our dog) had a great time too. After picking, we sat down and enjoyed the fresh strawberries together, including Ollie. We’ll definitely be back!
Natalia H — Google review
My little one had so much fun picking the strawberries and there was such an abundance that you didn’t have to worry there won’t be any “good” ones left towards the end of the day. I personally haven’t been a huge fan of strawberries to begin with and i (plus my partner and son) ate half of the pile in the pic! Doesn’t get anymore fresh than that. The fruit itself was so juicy and flavourful, best strawberries I’ve had 🍓 Can’t wait to come back when we visit Beechworth again 😊

Nice place to pickup berries. We picked strawberries and got really nice ones. No entry fee and you can pay whatever you are picking. Enough parking available and toilet too. Strawberry kg $14. They have some fresh ice cream too. Must try dairy milk with strawberries. Taste good. Good place to hangout with kids on weekend or any day.
Md S — Google review
Love love love this place. You can hand pick fresh berries - strawberries everywhere! Or if you are lazy just buy a punnet if the freshest sweetest most delicious strawberries you will find. They have ice cream, jam and sauce to purchase too. Staff are friendly and it’s easy to get a park. Great place to bring kids to. Love everything about this place.

Best Strawberries around, so good to be able to go and pick our own. We all had a great day in the sun and came home with a few too many but well worth it. Fantastic experience for the young fella. The staff we excellent and the fresh ice cream was a treat after being in the sun.

People said kind hearts are the garden and kind deeds are the fruits, and I would say this farm is well illustrating this. The texture and sweetness of their strawberries are overwhelming, the staff are accommodating and the environment is tidy. Stop by to satisfy your craving for berries here! They also have raspberries and blueberries. I should have picked more on that day, 500g is far from enough. Ps. They open 8-4 everyday.

Chiltern-Mount Pilot National Park is a forested park that features Woolshed Falls, numerous walking tracks and the stunning views from the granite peak of Mt. Pilot. The park has plenty of dirt tracks, including 4wd ones, while some are accessible by 2wd vehicles with sufficient ground clearance, notably the one leading to the summit of Mount Pilot which promises breathtaking views and unforgettable sunsets.
Beautiful spot not far from the freeway or Beechworth,, great views from the top , would be lovely at sunrise or sunset,, first time there so not super sure but for the runners and hikers, we went off track from the peak, near some spots to be careful on, car tracks through there but didnt find any single trail,, will need to go back and explore further

A great spot for birds. Please be respectful of the birds here, there are quite a few coming here and getting carried away with their attempts to capture bird photos. It is much better to get them in their wild natural state snd if you miss out you miss out, its part of the adventure and charm of it! I havent explored it all but a great spot for birds and with other excellent sites nearby. Chiltern, Rutherglen and even Wentworth are all excellent bases. Come early in the morning as the sun is rising or near dusk to get the best chances of seeing bird activity. Be sure to bring a bit of insect repellent and water in the summer. Drive slowly on the tracks so not to kick up and spread dust everywhere. Plenty of decent walks throughout

Following a 2017 redevelopment, the site has become an idyllic place for relaxation and leisurely strolls. Visitors can enjoy lush green lawns and picturesque surroundings near Lake Sambell while taking in the vibrant autumn foliage.
Loved. It is so tranquil, and if you sit and meditate for a bit you hear and see so much wildlife. It would be nice if someone encouraged more of the bees as in hives as they are making natural hives around the garden. The small lizard population is amazing and so nice to see thriving in this magical garden.

The service is highly recommended by satisfied customers who appreciated the flawless service and helpfulness of Nigel, the owner.
Rented ebikes for 2 days while staying in Beechworth. First day we cycled to Jakandandah , mostly downhill, so we were more than happy to have the assistance on the way back ! Scenery is gorgeous and lots of shade underneath the trees. The next day we went to Milawa and stopped off at the different wineries and cheese shops on the way. We had arranged to be picked up by James, which was a good decision after all the delicious wine & cheese that we had consumed! Would highly recommend this company, nothing was a problem for them, booked it over the phone with Michael, Nigel sent me a detailed email with all the places to go and James in the shop gave us the bikes, explaining everything to us. Finally , bikes were great & very comfy ! Having come all the way from Ireland to visit our son, many tks for making our stay in Beechworth so memorable.

Scenic Rail Trail Adventure with Exceptional Service and E-Bike Comfort. We rented two e-bikes to cycle from Beechworth to Yackandandah along the scenic Rail Trail, covering approximately 26km each way. The ride to Yackandandah was relatively easy, but the return journey required a bit more effort as we were already tired, and the gentle uphill gradient made us grateful for the e-bikes' maximum power assist. The route was picturesque, with beautiful views and sightings of cows and horses along the way, adding to the charm of the experience. A special mention goes to Michael, who managed the bike hire with exceptional professionalism and kindness. Despite being the only person in the shop and juggling a steady stream of customer enquiries, he remained calm, patient, and incredibly helpful throughout. We arrived at the shop later than expected, but Michael graciously only charged us for a half-day ride. He also kindly reassured us that we didn’t need to rush back, as we could simply lock the bikes outside the shop upon our return. This level of service was much appreciated and truly made our experience stress-free. If you’re looking for a memorable biking adventure with outstanding service, I highly recommend this shop. The combination of beautiful trails, well-maintained e-bikes, and Michael’s excellent customer care made it an experience we won’t forget!

Great bikes, friendly service and excellent communication. We just completed 3 days from Beechworth to Bright self guided as a family and Nigel had great recommendations along the way. He was kind enough to set up our bikes the day prior and helped us attach our Thule trailer adapter for our baby. The bikes were excellent and we had no issues at all. Our family of 4 rented bikes (including a follow on tandem and a trailer for the kiddies) from these guys and I cannot recommend them enough. Nothing was too much trouble for them! We were super disorganised and called on their busiest day to rent bikes for the next day and request shuttle services. They were super responsive and accommodating, they communicated extremely well and gave us great tips about where to visit, as well as practical info like where the toilets are along the way! The bikes too are very high quality. We rode from Beechworth to Bright over two days. Spectacular scenery. Can’t wait to go back and will definitely rent from Michael, Nigel and James again. Brewpub
Bar
Liquor store
Located in Beechworth, Australia, Bridge Road Brewers was established in 2005 by Ben and Maria Kraus. The brewery's dedication to handcrafted beers and the local community led to its rapid growth. Visitors can enjoy a variety of housemade craft beers, bar snacks, and pizza in an old-timey hotel with a vaulted ceiling. Additionally, the brewery offers a unique coffee experience for cyclists on the Murry to Mountains Rail Trail.
Bridge Road Brewers is truly a gem for anyone who loves craft beer and a welcoming atmosphere. The moment you walk in, you can feel the character of the place, rustic, warm, and full of energy. The staff are incredibly friendly and always happy to recommend something based on your taste, whether you’re a fan of light, refreshing beers or prefer something darker and more complex. The variety of beers is impressive. Every brew feels carefully crafted, and it’s clear that a lot of passion goes into what they do here. I especially enjoyed trying the tasting paddles, which is such a great way to explore different flavors in one visit. On top of that, the food is outstanding. The menu pairs perfectly with the drinks delicious wood-fired pizzas, hearty snacks, and plenty of options to share if you’re with friends or family. The outdoor seating area is another highlight. It’s spacious, relaxed, and perfect for enjoying a sunny afternoon with a cold beer in hand. It also feels very family-friendly, with lots of groups around, and you don’t feel rushed at all, you can sit back, chat, and enjoy the vibe for hours. What really makes Bridge Road Brewers special is the combination of amazing drinks, great food, and genuine hospitality. It’s more than just a bar; it’s an experience. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, this is one of those places you’ll want to come back to again and again. Highly recommended!

I really wanted to love this place, unfortunately I was just really underwhelmed. The wine was lovely and the pizza was good but the roast potatoes were more like diced potato tossed in fat. They were not roasted and were not crunchy at all. The apfelschorle was simply shelf stable apple juice with sparkling water in it. Staff were friendly and accommodating. The couple on the table next to us where cold and requested the heater on, the staff informed them they could not turn on the heater but offered to re seat them somewhere closer to a heater. Unfortunately I wouldn’t return.

Came by with my family last week for lunch and the atmosphere was really great. Staff were friendly and helped set us up with the high chair. Beer selection was wide but we were actually very pleasantly surprise with the apple juice + soda water. Refreshing over lunch! Pizza was made well and we loved the thin crust. But burger was a little disappointing - the buns were hard, dense, and cold, and didn’t hold the content of the burger well. It was too big to actually eat in a single bite. Certainly recommend the pizzas and apple juice!

Such an amazing venue! :) The food is amazing, the service is exceptional and the beers are the icing on the cake. If you are in Beechworth and are looking for a place to eat, relax and enjoy some sun, you will have to visit Bridge Road. Thank you kindly to Belinda and all the amazing team. We look forward to dropping in next time we are in Beechworth. Keep well

Fantastic brewery with an excellent tap selection and food menu. Friendly staff, kid friendly and take away beers available. Inside and outside dining options. Playground for the kids with parking on site at the rear
Jon W — Google review
One of the best breweries we have visited this year in our Victorian Beer Passports. The beers are amazing and the pizzas are just as great. The tasting paddles are huge but are the best way to experience the wide range of beers they make. I don't like sours or dark beers usually and yet left with a four pack of their sours and the dark ale. Staff were also lovely. I will be back next time I pass through town.

The Ageing Frog Fish Bar is a popular spot known for its delicious gluten-free meals, particularly its signature crunchy and flavorful gluten-free batter and renowned potato cakes. Despite being landlocked, the fresh fish regularly makes its way to this Victoria establishment. The generous servings of chips are quite impressive, making it advisable to opt for a small serve. Visitors praise the freshness of the fish and the variety of options available on the menu.
Potato cakes are one of the best l have had. I was disappointed in the fish as l asked for flake and they gave me a substitute fish. I ordered via phone and kept driving.

Best fish and chip shop i’ve ever been to! been here twice now on holidays and both times the food has been incredible! the home made chicken nuggets are the best, made with real chicken breast and so crispy, they even gave us extra nuggets. chips are perfect cooked. staff are so friendly!
Chloe W — Google review
Ageing Frog offers classic fish and chips with a twist right on the Beechworth main street. Medium chips are $11 and were perfectly crispy. Loads of contemporary menu items including fish burgers 🍔. Friendly prompt service ready in 5-10 minutes.
Donna M — Google review
Surprisingly good fish and chip. Don't let the shop front fools you, despite the classic looking frontage this fish and chip place actually delivers really great dish. Their selection is quite vary but we ordered the usual flake both fried and grill. Im glad to say that not only they really generous with the serving but the fish is really really fresh. Potato cakes also very very well cooked, this is the first time I saw this style of potato cakes which is different than your regular fish and chip shop. Chips are also nice and crisp again their chips is just different, fresh and tasty. The only think that I'm not a fan of is their stuffed mushrooms. Perhaps it's my tastebuds. Would I recommend it? Absolutely yes.
Ronny W — Google review
Get takeaway here quite often, the chicken sandwich and lamb roll are awesome! Fresh well selected ingredients cooked and assembled with precision and care to create a simple and delicious meal. The beef spring rolls though, it has to be said are easily the best spring rolls I have had anywhere. I can't quite explain how good they are on here, it's the sort of thing you have to experience at all costs if you are in the area. Great work guys. Keep up the good work
Zac C — Google review
Id like to support local business but this food is pretty bad. It was incredibly oily, everything felt soggy, nothing was crispy. The portions were confusing, minimum chips was tiny but cauliflower fritters were plentiful. Most of it went in the bin unfortunately as it was basically inedible. My partner said the shop was not very clean which put her off eating any of the food at all. It was well salted but aside from that not cheap and there’s lot of room for improvement.
Mandy G — Google review
I think this is the best fish and chip shop I've eaten at. It's unique. I ordered deep fried cauliflower with yougart sauce, vegetarian dim sims and chips and all were superb (and not expensive). The shop is small and quaint. Go, you wont regret it.

Walked in to be greeted with the biggest smile. Teens who make you feel welcome and are happy. Such a lovely start. Ordered grilled flake, two potato cakes and medium chips. Really loved it. More than enough. Give them a try - great quality and a happy place.

What an outstanding venue!! Unsure as to where we will have a coffee and some food, we dropped in at Project Forty Nine. Whatever you are looking for, they will have it here 😊 There is such an extensive range of items for sale in here. The staff are very helpful and friendly. There are 4 tables outside and a few tables inside if you were looking at sitting down for a bit! Thank you for the wonderful coffee, food made with love and such care. We will visit again when I'm next in town 😊

Place is easy to find, lots of parking on mainstreet. They have limited seating with a few small tables inside and out. They offer takeaway drinks and lots of sandwiches/sweet treats. The menu is small but has quality items on it. Coffee was nice and so was the food. Staff are friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend a booking. Dogs are allowed outside, and the prices are quite reasonable. Would recommend.

This was my first visit to Beechworth, and it does not disappoint. This cafe/continental store has a broad range of international small goods and Quality wine. We enjoyed our coffee, bacon n cheese toasted roll, peach muffin and apple muffin. The decor is eclectic, a little quirky and some contemporary. ❤️

This place is SO good!! Coffee was so delicious, awesome range of pastries, and the panini’s… I had the ham one - with picked cabbage, house pickled cucumber and, I think, hot mustard - amazing! Great range of wines and spirits, charcuterie stuff.. I could have gone nuts… Would go back here everyday I was in Beechworth…

Incredible. Bring a torch or use phone torch or can buy one for a couple dollars which is also a magnet as well. Steps to climb, need to be aware of holes in walls. Incredible experiences from start to finish, even if not a believer.

Freaky as hell! Absolutely loved the night tour I done. The guide was awesome too. Very theatrical. Got lots of pics and recon i got something 👻👻
Thomas W — Google review
This was so much fun. Our guide was amazing, her knowledge was exceptional. We had plenty of opportunities to find a “ghost” or other unworldly beings.
Christine P — Google review
Wow!! What a great night! Lynda, our guide, was so chill and informative. The whole tour was just amazing. My daughter and I love the paranormal, and this tour was just so good because there were no theatrics or embellishments. It was a group of people with an interest and curiosity. The team take their work very seriously, with so much respect to the asylum and all the energies that still reside there. Definitely coming back.
Kylie B — Google review
Did the history tour and very much enjoyed it. Tour guide didn't sensationalize anything and gave a thoughtful insight into mental health care from the past. Some interesting buildings and stories!
Andrew J — Google review
So. Used to live in Albury around 20 yrs ago and did this tour many times when it first started up. The original hosts were very theatrical and engaging, there was substantially more access to buildings and the tour just seemed more genuine. We did do the kids tour, which the kids loved, however now there is limited access to buildings (previously a uni owned it) and the tour seems to not have the feel of how it used to. There is also more staged items. It would have been good for more stories: like the haha wall or the umbrella and moonlight - stories from the old tour. Staff were good and controlled the audience. If this is your first time likely you will love it. It is am amazing facility with a rich past. Try and look around during the day as well. Note also there is a similar facility in Ararat which has similar tours, would highly recommend.
Stephen D — Google review
We did not do the ghost tour but it was great walking around the grounds and great photo opportunities.

We stopped in Beechworth for a coffee and to buy a few bottles on wine from the area as we were travelling in our motorhome. The owner who was very knowledgeable assisted. We told him what we were after he asked pertinent questions and voila purchased a bottle of The Ninth Mile Pinot Noir and A. Rodda Cabernets. Both excellent wines

Fantastic place! Lachlan is knowledgeable, welcoming and personable. Introduced me to a new grape variety I'd previously not heard of and even hunted down some wild mint growing in the back for me to take home. If in Beechworth absolute must to drop in!

Had a great experience here when visiting Beechworth last week. Lachlan introduced us to some great wines - all locally sourced. He was a friendly host with plenty of knowledge and some bonus jokes. We’re keen to return later this year to check out the area being built out the back that will become an eatery.

What a wonderful spot to stop at. The owner poured freely tastings of wines from the Beechworth vineyards. Lachlan explained the French Sab Blanc and the Reisling whilst plying us with dirty jokes, not tooo dirty by the way. Visit there, it is a wonderful cosy place to sit and sip the afternoon away. Oh and make sure you take your sense of humour!!🤣🤣🤣

The Town Hall Gardens on Williams St and is right next to the Burke Museum... This park is a wonderful part of Beechworth, and you have to go there to see the size of the Bunya Pines they are bloody big! The Gardens are absolutely stunning with a little bit of hiding history if you don't take the time to look around... One of the Bunya Pines has lights running all most to top and along some branches, which at night looks spectacular! This little pretty park has great seating, or the lush green grass is so inviting to lay back and look high into the Pines... Here at the park is a beautiful little fountain which again at night looks wonderful and there is a memorial, The name liveth for evermore.

Waterfalls
Newtown Falls is a picturesque waterfall located in Beechworth, Victoria, Australia. It can be found on Gorge St and is particularly stunning after a fresh rainfall, with a significant amount of water cascading down. The original wooden bridge from the 1800s has been replaced by a stone one built in 1874. While the scenic drive to the falls may be closed due to floods, visitors can still access it on foot and even see another cascading fall further down.
Newtown bridge and Newtown waterfall ..the bridge itself The Newtown Bridge is a single arch granite bridge built c.1875. The bridge spans over Spring Creek at Beechworth and is 24.8 metres long with a kerb to kerb width of 6.3 metres. The arch span measures 15.5 metres overall. The apex of the arch is adorned with two superimposed keystones while the lower (actual) keystone has been somewhat dislocated. The upper stone marks the centre of the smooth faced assailing course of granite. The capping stones have two carved weathering strips which run along the full length of the parapet. The weathering groove is open-ended thus allowing water to run off the surface of the capping stones. The parapet walls form an elegant curve at both ends while the darker coloured capping stones provide a distinctive contrast against the lighter stones of the parapet walls.... the falls vary on the time of the year water going over but still very effective

If you're staying in Beechworth and like to go for a stroll, why not make this cute waterfall on the outskirts of town your destination? A twelve minute amble from the centre of town to get to this photo opportunity. Sadly you can't go down into the gorge but only see it from a small viewing platform. Limited parking so don't be lazy...walk there!
Don T — Google review
A group of bushwalkers started at the Bridge and walked along to Spring Creek. Very enjoyable walk, though a lot of rocks and tree roots along the way. Medium fitness required
Judy B — Google review
It’s literally right there on your right when you turn the corner of Gorge St. Looks amazing after fresh rainfall with a huge amount of gushing water. The original bridge in the background was wooden built in the 1800s & was then replaced with this stone one that was built in 1874 & opened in 1875. The scenic drive is currently closed off (November 2022) due to floods, but you can still walk through by foot and see another cascading fall further down. ….what a difference a couple of days makes. Last photo is 2 days later & much less water but still beautiful and enough. If you’ve got time, keep walking further down along the track & you’ll get to see some Australian native animals such as the kookaburra and wallabies if you’re lucky.
Bella B — Google review
You can see the falls from a limited area. The road further down is not open
Janine W — Google review
Easily access water falls and cascades within the township. The creek was cut from rock and reminiscence of gold rush days. The stone bridge forms a perfect background for a nice photo, especially on wet season where the flow is quite impressive.

Truly a gem that is solely worth visiting Beechworth for

We were looking for a place to have a quick drink before our meal at Provenance when we stumbled across this cute little wine bar. We sat at the bar and had a quick tasting. The lady that ran us through the tasting was lovely and the wines were fantastic. We ended up getting a small single cheese plate that was incredibly generous and delicious. Any place that has the Will Stud triple cream on the menu is a winner. 😁 We ended up leaving with a bottle of the Quasimodo which is a fantastic drop.

The Stanley Pub is an appealing choice offering uncomplicated rooms with private gardens, in addition to a cozy bistro/bar. Apart from the historical Stanley Pub, which houses a bistro and bar recommended by Age Good Food Guide, there isn't much else here. However, the charming countryside surrounding the area is filled with orchards and provides a delightful atmosphere. The pub can be found at stanleypub.com.au and more information about it can be obtained from visitvictoria.com.
Fantastic little country pub with wonderfully cosy atmosphere. Dining rooms feel more like you’re at a friend’s house. Food is absolutely stunning. Asian fusion menu with many options designed to share. Anyone looking for something different will be rewarded for coming out of the way to visit. Just a few minutes Beechworth. Don’t come expecting run of the mill pub fare (Parma etc) you’ll be disappointed. 10 out 10 team, you’re in our top 10 Victoria country pubs.

Mixed feelings about this place. Had lunch here with my son on a wet and rainy afternoon. Loved the feel to this place, very cozy with an open fireplace and plenty of charm. Very busy when we visited, all tables booked out and very busy around the bar too. Tried the Korean corn cheese for entree, very good! And the carnivore special for mains, the young fella opted for the pork Belly bites. Desert was the apple pie from local Stanley apples. The food itself is absolutely sensational, like a really high-class restaurant, certainly not your traditional pub grub. Wait time was a little long, in my opinion, but they were very busy. Our waitress was servicing several other tables as well as ours. What disappointed me mostly was the price though, very, very expensive! I review a lot of pubs and hotels and these guys would have to be the most expensive I've experienced, and then to add a 10% surcharge on top was unbelievable! I can understand a public holiday surcharge, but a weekend surcharge? Never had anyone charge me 10% extra for the weekend before. Guys, the weekends would be by far your busiest days, and I think slugging you customers an extra 10% for their patronage is just bloody rude. Total price for a Saturday lunch for just 2 people was $202 bucks! I don't think I will be back sadly

Had lunch here today. The chefs know what they're doing that's for sure. The steak was perfectly cooked, everything was delicious, wait staff were efficient and lovely, and such a cosy space, beautiful warm fire.

The vibe was definitely a highlight, creating a really pleasant atmosphere. However, I found the food to be just alright, especially considering the price point. The staff service also wasn't quite as great as I'd hoped, falling a bit short of expectations.
Prajwal P — Google review
The Stanley Pub is sensational. The central dining room oozes 'cosy modern', and there's a beer garden to enjoy a meal on the patio too. The Asian fusion inspired gastro pub menu leaves so many customers in state of indecision they offer a try-a-bit-of-everything item at $73pp. We enjoyed the fish of the day and beef eye fillet- both cooked to perfection and plated like artwork. Service was easily the best we've had in the region. This small town pub is a destination worth seeking out- online booking is easy.

Visited here on the back of their eponymous craft beer. Turns out the town is the pub…but what a pub. Normally I will hold back on exotic pub menus on the basis that “basics are always best” - no need for that here. The extensive menu has a wine list to more than match. It has a table served and picturesque outdoor dog friendly beer garden making it the perfect way to while away a lazy Sunday afternoon. I will definitely be back!

Beechworth Historic Park is a 1080-hectare area featuring old mine sites, eucalyptus and native cypress pine forests, creeks, gullies, and granite outcrops. It offers interpretive walks with opportunities to spot kangaroos and koalas. Visitors can explore the park's natural beauty through a pleasant gorge drive with stop-offs or take a ~5km loop walk on a dirt road.
Beautiful town ,lots of historic buildings & the scenery is stunning .

Nice walk, not too difficult, plenty of shaded areas.
Echo F — Google review
Beautiful walks, peaceful, hardly anyone there. Some paths are a little unkept, but pretty good. Toilets would be good (tho there are plenty of trees 😉)
KM — Google review
A pleasant ~5km gorge drive with stop-offs. The track is all one way with a few small car parks to stop and take a hike. 4-wheel drive is not needed in the summer, but it may difficult when the track is wet. The gorge looks great and the water is crystal clear.
Kerbray — Google review
We did a ~5km loop at 6:30am to avoid the summer sun and heat, and it was just beautiful. Most of the time the walk is actually on a dirt road, so plenty of space to walk safely.
Rachael A — Google review
This place is quite a stunning place to visit with so much history and nature a in the one place. The gorge is absolutely amazing. There is a small area where a couple of cars can park so you can walk down to the water and can relax in the water holes.
Meral C — Google review
Great place to enjoy a picnic with family or friends somewhere around the park as you have many places to sit back and enjoy what the park has to offer. You could even walk from town to the park as it is so close. But it it only a 1 way road and basically only a couple of car spots around the park unless you stopped at the powder magazine.

Awesome area to explore. Amazing views, wildlife, native plants and amazing boulders. Plenty of history to see and many things to do.

Lake Sambell in Beechworth offers a picturesque setting for various activities, from leisurely picnics to invigorating walks. Visitors can pick up delectable treats from local establishments like Beechworth Bakery, Beechworth Berries, and The Beechworth Sweet Co. For those who prefer a more active experience, the area provides opportunities for walking, running, boating, canoeing, kayaking and fishing.
Such a cute little lake to have a picnic if you’re in the area!
Madisyn R — Google review
I feel this is a must if you visit Beechworth. A lovely spot - easy parking - just out of town. THEN - a great walk right around the lake. A fairly easy walk if you take your time. Great photo ops. It is well worth it. Picnic spots, reading spots, walking etc etc.
Michael M — Google review
Lake Sambell is a big part of Beechworth locals and visitors' activities from walking and running trails to boating canoeing and kayaking to fishing! The lake has a wide variety of freshwater species that include yellowbelly, trout, redfin, tench, and trout-cod... This 2 km loop is an easy trail with a great walkway in places to make it easy with some stairs near the historic gold site, it takes an average of 35 mins to 45 mins to complete the full circuit... This lake was built after a £200 donation from John McConville to transform the hole left behind from the miners in the mid 1800's, the engineer, Leslie Sambell, created the lake in October 1928... The water of Spring Creek is bringing life back into the heart of Beechworth rather than being diverted to wash gold... Lake Sambell offers a great view for visitors who stay at the Lake Sambell Caravan Park as the beautiful sunset and forever changing sky's of this amazing lake.
Matt I — Google review
A beautiful lake which is located about 5 minutes drive away from the Beechworth town centre. This place is a good place to chill, relax and destress. The lake is very clean and the water is crystal clear. There are ample of parking spaces. There is also a public toilet nearby. Come over to this lake for a swim, some picnic, to take photographs and leave good memories with you.
Terence K — Google review
Really lovely for picnics, swimming and kayaking! The wildlife is also really nice - there's so many birds.
Maddy G — Google review
A beautiful place to sit by the lake and enjoy aloneness or bbq with family.
Wage P — Google review
Great little beach lake to swim at. Toilets and playground are pretty clean, lots of room for everyone to share the area. The lake is pretty warm to swim in and perfect for paddle boarding and canoeing, but lots and lots and lots of reeds, would be better if the council could clear some of them out.
Lisa S — Google review
Great for a dip after a mountain bike ride. Not too cold in summer. There is a pontoon to swim out to. Picturesque.

Playground
Lake Sambell Playground is a shaded play area situated by the man-made Lake Sambell. The main structure offers various activities such as a spiral slide, climbing wall, binoculars, fireman's pole, and more. Additionally, there are other amenities like swings, a flying fox, and an outdoor BBQ for visitors to enjoy. The playground is adjacent to clean toilets and provides a pleasant setting for families to relax and have fun.
After we settled into the beautiful Lake Sambell Caravan Park, our adventures began with a small walk of part of the Lake Sambell itself... We found the lake circuit walk that started near the caravan park off McConville Avenue, which is a beautiful place to start! The path led us through a peaceful bushland area where we listened to kookaburras have a good old laugh! Along the small part of the lake circuit, we found it had small but interesting woodland glades with a little wooden bridge, which near some TLC from the local council! The lake circuit track led us to this amazing playground/ BBQ picnic area where there is a great playground for the kids while you cook a feed with beautiful views of the Lake... There are also toilet facilities available here at this beautiful location.
Matt I — Google review
Great place to bring family..Lake Sambell has clear spring fed water with awesome sandy beach & a small pontoon further out to dive from. Playground is a bonus with some gold rush themed play equipment. Please strictly supervise your kids... Toilets are located nearby. Free car parking is next to playground & lake. I did a drive through (one way circuit - enter via McConneville Avenue) & stopped here briefly on my recent visit to Beechworth. It was a hot day & was very tempting for a dip!!
The M — Google review
Nice little playground by the lake. Very popular with the locals. You can also access the foreshore there and there is a BBQ and toilets.
Boris D — Google review
Visited in the rain. Cooked on the outdoor bbq. The toilets are quite clean and have toilet paper and sinks. The only bad part was the duck. Or goose. He just wouldn’t leave us alone whilst we were cooking. He would slowly waddle up to us, thick headed and stare at us with his beady white eyes, checking out whatever we were cooking. When we’d shoo him away he’d look offended for a bit then circle around us to have another shot from a different angle. He was rather stupid and couldn’t get the hint. More of a dumb dinosaur than a goose I came to this campground almost 6 years ago and the same goose was there then. I suppose no one has strangled him out of frustration - yet.
B A — Google review
Lake Sambell is tucked away only a short distance from the city centre. It's a lovely place to go for a walk, picnic or on warmer days take to the water. The Chinese garden is a quaint start to a leisurely walk along the lakes foreshore.
Don T — Google review
lovely spot, sandy beach by the lake, easy water access great for kayaking and fishing one of the only place you can catch and keep a Trout Cod, play area is shaded, free BBQs and Toilets, great walking and cycling tracks.
Zac T — Google review
Beautiful setting to let the kids play. There is plenty of shade, barbeques, ducks, walking track, picnic tables. It would be very easy to spend an afternoon outside. There are very good paths for strollers. If only I had my fishing rod and/or swimming suit. The toilets are accessible and clean. The park also has sinks and water fountains.
Aaron D — Google review
Very good little playground. Don't let your kids discover the blacksmith hammer if you're hungover.

The Beechworth Asylum, which operated for 128 years since its opening in 1867, had the capacity to accommodate 1200 patients. It was at this historic site that John Cade discovered the link between lithium carbonate and bipolar disorder management, revolutionizing mental health care. Visitors can explore the asylum's rich history and take part in paranormal investigations led by knowledgeable guides.
We did the ghost tour as well as the paranormal tour. Both guides were highly entertaining and knowledgeable. To see the buildings relatively untouched, this is a fantastic snapshot into Australia's dark psychiatric past. I found the scratch marks on the back of the doors, bite marks on the doors and door frames, and patient graffiti fascinating. I highly recommend a visit here.
Charlie T — Google review
Asylum tours are always a must! This one has such a nice history behind it and our tour guide was amazing! I’ve been on the Ararat Asylum Tour previously and this one just wasn’t quite as good. Still a must to do, however you don’t get to see as much of the buildings
Madisyn R — Google review
We recently visited Beechworth Asylum and it was an incredibly intriguing experience! The historic site offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the eerie beauty of the old Mayday Hills Lunatic Asylum. The guided tours are well-researched and provide a deep dive into the history of the asylum, including the stories of its former residents. The atmosphere is suitably spooky, making it perfect for those who enjoy a bit of a thrill. The tour guides are knowledgeable and engaging, adding to the overall experience. The asylum's architecture and preserved interiors are fascinating, giving you a real sense of what life might have been like back then. Whether you're a history buff, a fan of ghost stories, or just looking for something different to do, Beechworth Asylum is definitely worth a visit. It's a unique and memorable way to spend a few hours in Beechworth.
Nikki H — Google review
Did a daytime Asylum tour, the group was very small which made the tour much more personal. Our guide was friendly and informative. Even though it was daytime the inside of the buildings still had a very eerie feel. Highly recommended, would like to return for the ghost tour.
Daniel S — Google review
We stayed at 'the Linaker' being hotel rooms in the former nurses quarters. While there we took part in this history tour of this former 'Asylum' and explored the lush grounds. It certainly was not a nice place to be locked up in especially in its early life when it was easy to commit someone but not as easy to get out. I thoroughly recommend the tour which was informative although a touch horrifying. Definitely worth a visit to explore the Mayday Hills precinct whether you decide to partake in the tour or not.
Don T — Google review
There’s an asylum tour you can do, but I personally couldn’t afford the $45pp for 90min. So just walked around the outside myself & did a little of my own research. It opened in October 1867. It was designed to accommodate the ever growing population of the prison center. It also housed those with Down Syndrome, epilepsy, ADHD… The men were put to work as farm labourers, carpenters, blacksmiths, painters, shoe-makers and tailors, while the women worked as launderers, knitters, seamstresses and domestics. Sitting up on the hill it was believed wind could clear their minds. Medication wasn’t introduced until 1950s, so their methods back then were obviously questionable. The perimeter wall was demolished in 1955 to establish an “open door” policy. 1960s a nurse training school was established. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the development of other residential options meant there were fewer patients. By 1996 the hospital consisted of 2 wards & the process of decommissioning was underway. A venue used for weddings is the Chapel of the Resurrection, to the west of the site. It was built in 1868 as the mortuary for the complex, and was converted to the chapel seen today in the 1960s Spirits are believed to still be stuck there. Some of the surrounding properties are privately owned, so do not just walk freely everywhere.
Bella B — Google review
Former 19th century "Lunatic Asylum" set on beautiful grounds (trees donated from Royal Botanic Gardens). The site is a little unkempt but that just adds to the slightly eerie feel of the place. A few interesting signboards that explain different aspects of the site's history - well worth a walk and exploration.
Andy P — Google review
My family and I went to the paranormal investigation last night. While overall it was a quiet night regards interaction, my daughter’s and myself experienced individual experiences. The buildings are steeped with history and it was a privilege to be able to still walk around them while they are still standing. Our tour guide Josh was informative but didn’t use this to influence our expectations which was great and he did his best to try and call the spirits forward, even extending our tour by half an hour. We spent a good hour in the admin building before going on to the grivellia, cellar, women’s ward and laundry. Thank you for an awesome night.
