Located in Carlisle, Thin White Duke is a trendy bar and restaurant housed in a stylishly converted monastery building. Since its establishment in 2010, it has gained popularity for serving the best burgers in the city. In addition to their renowned burgers, the eatery offers a variety of seasonal dishes ranging from classic fish and chips to flavorful curries and steaks. The bar is also known for its unique cocktails and diverse selection of gin.
After visiting the area all day round , we came across this place and decided to have a drink. So pop in. What a lively gem it is. All the staff were helpful and polite. They were offering nice drinks in cask and keg. Perfect place for din. So romantic atmosphere and happy vibes. Very well clean toilets even the whole place was awesomely great. We hope to visit it again in the future when in area. Surely recommend.

Loved this place. Great service. Menu amazing. Although no kids menu they made so much effort with my little girls and gave them small portions. Best cauliflower (burger) I've ever tasted. We live two hours away and I'd consider driving it just for that! 😄
Kara M — Google review
We were a party of 6 adults and 2 kids, who had booked a few days in advance for a Saturday afternoon lunch and a couple of drinks. We were led to a downstairs table which was perfect for our party. Great buzz around the place from the customers at other tables, with a feeling of still being quite private. Ideal for conversation with the music not overly loud. Food order was taken swiftly and drinks were brought first. We had all came down from Edinburgh with only a few hours in town, so the service was fast which we appreciated. Food was excellent, portions were plentiful and tasty. Good value for money and a wide range of menu choices. Anything left on plates was because of the volume of food!! Adult portion was halved for kids; no problem for staff to accommodate this request. Cannot fault the staff on duty on Saturday 11/10 at 14:15....I was particularly impressed with each of the staff who attended to us. Would highly recommend and would definitely travel +1hour to do it again. Well worth a visit 👍🏼

Popped in here on the off chance I might find a GLUTEN FREE choice , and I was right!! The GLUTEN FREE MENU is very impressive, lots of choice!! I went for the Spring Chicken dish which was very well cooked , very well presented, and very tasty!! I just came to Carlisle for my tea as I'd travelled from Settle on the beautiful, scenic railway, and I have to say , I made a great choice!! The staff were very helpful and polite too , which makes a refreshing change!!

My family are from Essex and we are on holiday and wanted a really good sunday roast and due to the other very positive reviews we tried this place. And i can say with full confidence that that was the best roast i have had in a very long time. I couldn’t put my fork down and i’m honestly so happy that i found this place because ei have no bad things to say about it. Staff are very friendly and very welcoming when i had a person in a wheelchair with me, they offered us use of a ramp with the front entrance and moved chairs out the way for them. They also have a disabled toilet on the lower floor and regular toilets upstairs that were really nicely decorated. The atmosphere in the place is really nice and i thoroughly recommend this place to everyone. IF U WANT THE BEST ROAST EVER COME HERE ON A SUNDAY.
Isabelle N — Google review
This place looks incredible with the exposed brickwork, copper piping lights and scene filled resin tables. Service was quick, plenty of ales on tap, food was tasty. I had the flat iron steak, cooked perfectly, my only critique would be a little over seasoned. Highly recommend.
Don M — Google review
Food was nice. Initial service from greeter made us feel like an inconvenience from the outset. Ok it was a walk in and we didn't reserve a table, simply tell us no room and we would find somewhere else. After pointed to "that table over there" by the maitre d a nice lady came over who was very polite and took ours drinks order. Then back to misery guts who asked if we were ready to order, one of us hadn't decided so he stood over us waiting for a choice and impatiently said he could start with anyone. How about get lost for 2 mins whilst we choose? Anyway the food was actually really nice. Nice lady checked on us to make sure all was ok and to ask if more drinks were needed. Good sized helpings. Sadly no room for dessert. Go back? Probably not after that welcome. Either face didn't fit or someone was having a bad day. Don't take it out on the customers fella.

Carlisle Castle, situated in northern Cumbria, is a formidable 12th-century fortress and former prison that now houses a regimental museum and showcases Roman artifacts. The castle's history intertwines with the captivating tales of Mary, Queen of Scots, who was held captive there by her cousin Queen Elizabeth I. Visitors can explore the site where she was imprisoned and even walk along Ladys Walk, where she once strolled under the watchful eye of Sir Francis Knollys.
Large intact castle dating from 11th and 12th centuries with a huge amount of history attached. There is much to see, museum, castle keep and just walking around the walls. There is a nice reasonably priced cafe. It is well worth a visit if you are in the area. There is plenty of reasonably priced parking in the adjacent car park
Alan H — Google review
A really interesting castle and the most iconic site in Carlisle. This is a must visit site when in the city and entry also includes access to the military museum housed on site. There are lots of areas to explore within the castle including well preserved structures.
Matt H — Google review
The Castle is very impressive and the staff were absolutely passionate and knowledgeable. They gave great insights and getting the guide book made it easier to know where you were and find out more about each venue. The added bonus of the war museum showed great history as well. Definitely worth a visit and £15 to get in was not bad.
Warren S — Google review
I had decided to have a bit of a wounder in and around town, the castle, Tullie house then get something to eat before head home. Had an explore around the castle witch was fun or it was rather empty I was expecting more things in the rooms. But saying g that it was still worth the money decided recommend to everyone.

Every time we come home, we visit and find something we didn't notice the last time. Staff here are extremely knowledgeable and I recommend doing the tour! Carlisle has some of the most interesting history through all ages in time.
Ryan M — Google review
We visited on a Saturday around 12pm and it was not busy, we were able to book tickets online and we were admitted quickly. The site has a lot of history and you can access the military museum as well as a fascinating keep. There are facilities including a cafe and gift shop.
The M — Google review
Fantastic castle, just on the outskirts of Carlisle town centre. There are many rooms, floors, and wall walks to explore with great views of the surrounding area. Huge carpark just outside chargeable but something like £3 for the day. Small gift shop and cafe on site also.
Steven M — Google review
Stunning piece of history. Today we had 2 trainee tour guides, they both knew their history and facts about the every facet of the Castle's history; however, one was slightly softer spoken and tolds us about the armoury and testing gas masks & was kind enough to invite us on tour of the dungeons with a larger group, when he really didn't need to. (Only wish I had asked this kind gentlemans name). Easy to park. Limited access for disabled, but still enough to soak in the history. (Even if upstairs is off limits) Cobbled stones in areas. A little cafe, limited allergy options, but cold drinks and ice cream.

Carlisle Cathedral, a small cathedral with free entry, offers a glimpse into 15th-century art and stained glass, as well as treasury exhibits. Situated within walking distance of Carlisle Castle and other historical attractions, the cathedral is part of the city's rich history. The castle itself boasts a Norman keep dating back to 1092 and houses Cumbria's Museum of Military Life.
A beautiful but small and modest cathedral church. A lovely homely feeling, and a magnificent awesome east window spanning nine lights. The cathedral ceiling in the choir and sanctuary are also most definitely worth seeing, decorated with beautiful guilded angels. Very welcoming and most definitely worth a visit If you are ever in Carlisle City or the surrounding area.
Daryl W — Google review
A spectacular old cathedral in the northeast corner of England. It is a personal favorite and I would recommend a visit. Begin in 1123 in the Norman style, it was built with local red sandstone. Much of the church was rebuilt in the 13th century in the Gothic style. The ceiling is spectacular. Owen Jones designed and specified the painted star ceiling in Carlisle Cathedral’s choir during its 1856 restoration under architect Ewan Christian. The wooden barrel vault dates to the 14th century, but the medieval scheme was lost, and Jones—a prominent Victorian decorative artist known for his work on the Crystal Palace interiors—created the blue background with gold stars and angels, drawing from historical styles. It was later repainted in 1970 for preservation, maintaining Jones’s original vision. The east window is impressive. It is the largest and most complex such window in England at 51’ by 26’. It depicts events from the life of Christ; some of the panes in the upper portion are original, dating back to 1350. Parking in the area is good. There are several car parks within half a mile.
Shane G — Google review
So nice to be able to wander around with the dog. It’s a beautiful cathedral with some unique points of interest, including the ceiling. Perhaps not the most impressive in the country but it holds its own. The grounds are also very pleasant.
Marques — Google review
I visited the cathedral on June 2nd and was warmly welcomed by the kindest staff. Two gentlemen offered me a map, pointed out the must-see spots, and shared a timetable. They also noticed that my friend had stayed outside with his dog and proactively let me know that dogs are allowed inside. That thoughtful gesture really stood out. It was heartwarming to see how genuinely kind and attentive they were. And the cathedral itself? Absolutely stunning. Truly worth a visit!
Patricia P — Google review
Very old and interesting. The stain glass windows are in very good shape considering the age. The organ pipes along with the organ itself are really worth the visit. There are lots of buildings on the site which you can look around the library is interesting the entrance to which is through the cafe, the cafe has a large area outside and quite a large area inside the food is good. Would recommend trip here.
Ian F — Google review
Today, accompanied by both my sons and grandmas, we spent a truly memorable two hours at Carlisle Cathedral—an experience that was both calming and profoundly awe-inspiring. The cathedral’s serene atmosphere speaks volumes beyond words, inviting quiet reflection within its historic, hallowed walls. We were fortunate to be greeted by a highly knowledgeable guide who kindly provided us with a detailed map and patiently answered all our questions, enriching our visit immeasurably. Although the organ wasn’t playing this week due to half-term, which was a slight disappointment, it gave us an opportunity to treasure the visual and spiritual grandeur of the space even more deeply. We took the chance to purchase a CD of the cathedral’s magnificent organ music, promising to carry a piece of the experience home with us. Carlisle Cathedral, with its timeless beauty and thoughtful stewardship, is a gem that left us inspired and grateful—a place to revisit time and again with loved ones.
Alexandra K — Google review
Magnificent, pocket sized, deep-red sandstone cathedral, with a magical painted ceiling that will give you neckache for the time you will want to keep marvelling at it. It’s a small building with a pretty cloister, not really something you’d spend more than half an hour poking around, but if you’re in Carlisle, it’s definitely worth going out of your way to go and see this. Check opening times though, it isn’t always open. And maybe help support the cathedral by having a bite to eat at the cathedral cafe, as in the UK, this really is one of a kind - painted ceilings like this are what you see occasionally in France, but very rare in the UK. I remember being blown away the first time I saw it, I’d never seen anything of the kind before. Quiet, rarely many people, you’ll generally have the place to yourself.
Gordon D — Google review
Stunning cathedral…. Unfortunately we only managed to get a glimpse as it was graduation day and the ceremony was on. Lots of work going on in Carlisle which will only enhance the town more. Lots of shops, the centre is quite big with major dept stores. Lots of eateries and pubs, spoilt for choice really.

Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery is a diverse museum featuring historic relics, weaponry, fine art, and natural sciences. The museum has recently refurbished two permanent galleries to showcase its nationally important collection of Pre-Raphaelite art. Visitors can explore Carlisle and Border history as well as the area's natural history on the first floor Border Galleries. Tullie House also boasts beautiful gardens with a variety of herbaceous plants, shrubs, and bushes that are meticulously maintained by the gardening team.
What a superb museum. So many interesting displays that we ended up having to call time due to our brains being overloaded. The Roman exhibition is very well put together, as is the story of the city through the ages. Definitely worth a visit
Mick O — Google review
Excellent museum, the dinosaur exibit very well laid out and informative. Plenty of space inside for wheelchairs users. Recommend to buy the annual pass as there is loads to see.

Tullie House has always been my favourite museum in the North West- Rich in local and Border History, Tullie House never fails to impress. Their limited time exhibitions are always presented to a very high standard, and I recently visited the rEvolution Dinosaur exhibit, which was a solid 10/10. The Tullie refurbishment makes the building look fresh and new.
Alesha E — Google review
Attractive local museum which has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment. Nice cafe and arts and crafts related talks are sometimes held. Cafe gave a positive impression, did not consume anything there. Only looked at some free displays, some impressive artefacts like a prehistoric gold bangle and a large key to one of the old city gates. Attractive tiled stairway, mosaic floor and bannister with coats of arms
Hannah W — Google review
The kids absolutely loved it. It is so changed since I have been there. The exhibitions were great and the Dino exhibit was really interesting.

It’s our second visit to Tullie Gallery this year – and once again, the exhibition left us truly impressed! 🎨😍✨ There’s something about this place that keeps calling us back… always inspiring, always worth it. 💫🖼️ If you’re ever in Carlisle, don’t miss it! 📍👀 #TullieGallery #ArtVibes #CarlisleCulture #GalleryLove 💕🎭
Babs B — Google review
The extra exhibition of dinosaur world is interesting and informational. However, at the lower floor of Roman exhibition was disappointing. For example, my young grandson was spelling out a name, that required a ,"u" after helping to search, no u's , so I spoke to assistant, apparently, no U's. This does not take into consideration, that our children learn phonetically, having a letter missing, is annoying. The rest of our explore was fine.
Penny P — Google review
Recently opened exhibition Dinosaur rEvolution is well worth visiting. Great fun for a family and people of all ages. New discoveries about dinosaurs led to the new way of thinking about how they looked and how they lived. It is bright, it is interactive, it is informational, and it is fun.

Amazing Sunday Roast! Came for my Wifes Birthday with are little Boy and we were blown away with how tasty everything was. I had the starter of chicken goujons with a cheese and BBQ sauce, it was delicious. We both had the roast 10/10 ❤ finished off with cookie dough and the OB sticky toffee pudding. The staff were very professional and polite. Suggesting the burger for are one year old who couldn't get enough if it ! We are looking forward to coming back 😊

Fantastic experience at The Old Bank! We came as a group of foodies with kids and we were very well looked after. The service was quick (we had pre-ordered), the staff caring and helpful and the food was delicious! I had Sunday Roast Chicken and it was a bit dry but my starter (fish cake) and the side of cauliflower cheese was so delicious that it compensated for it. Those who had the roast beef absolutely loved it. Quirky place. Lovely vibes.
Elodie Y — Google review
We went to The Old Bank for a Sunday Roast, and it was epic! The portions were huge, the meat cooked to perfection and came with all the trimmings. The staff and service were just incredible - all were super friendly, attentive, and really lovely. They allow dogs too, and made a proper fuss of our 2 Frenchies, so we all felt very well looked after. We also had the madras kiev and lasagne bites starters, which were amazing, and also very generous portions. Highly recommend this great restaurant to anyone in the area. We will definitely be back the next time we're in Carlisle!

What an absolute gem of a find! The Old Bank exceeded all expectations – the food was excellent, full of flavour and beautifully presented. The cocktails were fantastic, crafted with real care and creativity. The service was just as impressive – warm, friendly, and attentive without ever being overbearing. Matt and Harry have created something really special here, and it shows in every detail of the experience. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will definitely be back again soon. A big well done to the team – highly recommended!

Blown away by The Old Bank! As soon as I read the menu outside I was already interested by the choices the chef had made, and I was not disappointed. I ordered the steak and beef cheek pie and my partner ordered the Chicken supreme, we both cleaned out plates. The decor is quirky and fun and the toilets were even very nice! If I lived anywhere near Carlisle, I'd be here all the time!

4th October 2025 were booked in arrived on time but a large group were in and Obviously did not want to leave when they were meant to . Staff poor at dealing with this and we along with several other couples had to wait 20 minutes before tables cleared and cleaned . During this time I asked for a drink but the waitress wasn’t very clued up and the gin and tonic I ordered she was going to put cola in it !! When it did Come it was drowned in tonic with no taste of gin . This was replaced by a manager .we were looking forward to a great meal as reviews were great what we got was not the best .we ordered a pie which sounded fabulous it came with mash carrots and a sauce all of these were good but the pie was small the pastry dry and the crust burnt and the filling almost non existent very disappointing. We did order a sweet my wife had sticky toffee pudding which she said was excellent and I had a run and raisin dish with banana. It has some sort of pastry as part of it which was not great I found the raisins and the banana but no a taste that would suggest any rum had been In it . Overall I appreciate the place was very busy and the group of approximately 30 persons who overstayed their time had caused problems and maybe we suffered as a result of this but this was a special meal for my wife’s birthday and it was not a great experience

Came in off the street ( very rainy!) and knew nothing about the place. Amazing food - my partner and I shared a first course - risotto - and a main course - steak pie. Absolutely delicious and more than enough for the two of us. Highly recommended!!

Visited on Sunday for the full Sunday roast beef dinner one of the best I’ve eaten x3 large slices of beef and all the trimmings additionally a cauliflower cheese that was divine in a separate side dish but included in the price . OT had the steak burger and he wasn’t disappointed. Service was very attentive and cheerful staff . background music playing created a relaxed vibe .

A Sunday train to Carlisle, a brief escape on a grey, windy afternoon. A short stroll led us to The Last Zebra - a name that promises something a little different, and a modern, lively interior that delivers. It's busy, popular, and suits almost any company. Service was a highlight: our Canadian server, with her soft English and warm manners, made the visit even brighter. Food was quick, simple and well done. A charming spot to linger over a meal or simply watch the world go by. As for the name, it's cheeky, memorable, and entirely justified. The Last Zebra isn't just the last of its kind; it's one you'll hope to see again. ✨🦓

We came here on a recommendation from a lady at the military museum in the castle and we are so glad we did! The best food we had all week and very good service too. We had halloumi fries, broccoli and green beans with Parmesan, chunky fried fish as a three dishes deal (£26) plus chicken kebabs. Really great beers too
Claire J — Google review
We booked here after our usual place was fully booked on a Sunday. We were seated quickly by the polite staff. We ordered 3 different drinks from the juice bar section of the drinks menu , that arrived promptly, and were beautiful! When the waitress came to take our order, we were disappointed to hear that the lamb and chicken Sunday roasts had sold out, this was a bit of a blow because that's exactly why we'd gone in, it would have been appreciated if we had been told about this before we had ordered the drinks, it was only 3pm, but guessed that they may have been previously very busy. Myself and my husband opted for the beef dinner, my daughter opted for the chicken karaage. When dinner arrived, it was presented well, it looked very appealing. It tasted nice, but would have been nicer if it had been warmer, so slightly disappointed .My daughter loved and recommends the chicken. Overall the decor was tasteful. The staff were really polite and friendly but we felt that the food was a bit of a let down. Drinks were amazing though. So we may give this place another go, but maybe earlier on in the day!

Had an absolute blast at Walkabout! The energy was on point — great music, lively crowd, and solid drink options. What really stood out was the service — Thalia behind the bar was incredible. Super friendly, quick with the drinks, and just a great vibe all around. She really made the night feel even more fun. Can’t wait to come back!

The bouncers didn't check our IDs and while I was in the patio area, I was told by a bouncer to have 'some respect for myself' even though there were many people wearing much less than me as it was Halloween. Also, my friend wasnt allowed back in after having fresh air and was unable to get their things. The bouncers were incredibly unprofessional and were acting like they were on a power trip instead of prioritising the safety of the customers.

Travelling through Carlisle for a trip and spent the night at Walkabout. Archie was, no, is the best server in the world. Been a couple of times when we've been passing through Carlisle. The food is ok for what you get, feel like the prices don't reflect the portions. The tables seem to always be sticky too.

We did a bottomless brunch here. Thalia was our server she was so lovely and helpful. She was quick at serving us drinks and she also let us modify some drinks that weren’t on the menu. It was the perfect brunch

Don’t remember how I got there. Don’t remember how I left. All I know is that as soon as I stepped in the building, Archie appeared out of thin air like the answers to all my prayers. My guy was pouring drinks like his life depended on it. Fast. Flawless. Utterly, truly majestic. At one point i saw him make six shots with one hand and hype up a group of girls with the other. Pretty sure he called one of them a queen and it healed her emotional trauma. He isn’t just some random guy on the bar…he’s also a part time therapist. He handed me a shot of tequila and comforted me while I sobbed uncontrollably about my dead stick insects—told me it was okay to hate my mother for feeding them to my crusty cat that has no teeth and smells like beef hoola hoops. His presence heals all wrong in your life. I would follow this man into war. I would name my first born child after him. If he told me to fight the devil himself, I would do it with no questions asked. If you go here and Archie isn’t working…leave. If he is, prepare for the best night of your life. All hail Archie.

Our favourite place in the city. Top tier hospitality and customer service. Truly delicious cocktails and a broad selection of wines. The most beautiful, atmospheric, hidden gem, in Carlisle, The Lane is stunning inside, every floor of the bar is different, with many cozy areas, including a roaring open fire downstairs, perfect for cocktails on a cold Winter night. I love it and we cannot wait to come back!

Always my favourite bar in Carlisle. The staff, drinks and decor are second to none. Whether it’s a lovely day enjoying the beer garden or a typical English weather day enjoying being sat by the fire this bar has it all covered. The hospitality is always out of this world and brings that elevated extra touch each time you visit. The attention to detail on the design of each area really makes each space luxurious and different to typical bars, highly recommended a visit for any occasion.

Cracking little bar, nice location and friendly staff. We had a few drinks here the other weekend whilst celebrating our anniversary and bumped into some old pals so were there for quite a while, felt right at home - it is small, it can get busy - as can any bar. Everyone was having a good time and the atmosphere was mint
Richard S — Google review
First visit late on a Friday night. The staff were fabulous, friendly and helpful. A very good choice of gins, where I was able to try one that was new to me. It's located at the top corner of Botchergate so perfect for watching the world go by. Located opposite the Citadel it's a great first stop off the bus or train. It's a small bar, but set out well to maximise space. It was clean and tidy too. As it was still warm we chose to sit outside, where staff checked on our needs and advised us of last orders. I am definitely going to visit again as I feel I could easily while away time relaxing here.

We visited a couple of nights ago while in the area. The staff were super friendly, drinks reasonably priced and the board games were a great touch! The decor of the place is super pretty too. Thoroughly enjoyed our night. Will definitely be back if we visit the area again. Thank you!

We initially loved this bar on our day out in Carlisle. We met here 1st and it had a great vibe. We came back late afternoon prior to getting our trains home. My daughter went to the toilet. Was gone less than 1 min and came back to our table outside. One of the bar staff came running out after her saying ‘Have you just been sick in the toilets - someone’s left lots of toilet roll everywhere’. My daughter prostrated that she’d had just been in there for a very quick pee- but the staff member was so rude. It totally ruined the bar for us and we left. Please be careful what you accuse people of! We were just having a drink before our train. Not drunk and certainly not vomiting!

Me and my friend visited this place earlier this week. We were looking for a safe place to leave our luggages while visiting Carlisle city. We were advised at the train station to go to this bar so we did :-) there was absolutely amazing and very friendly staff who took our heavy bags and kept them safe. We could enjoy our city walk and later on we actually had some drinks before our train was scheduled. I seriously would like to recommend this bar not only for your luggage storage but also for drinks and having a good time there :-)

Brunton Park, the historic home of Carlisle United Football Club, is a traditional and charming stadium that reflects the club's deep community roots. The older architecture gives it an authentic feel, standing out from modern stadiums. While it could benefit from upgrades, the terraces for home fans and the off-centered away stand add character to the venue. Stewards are praised for their helpfulness, especially towards families with children.
Really enjoyed my time up in Carlisle covering a match. Very hospitable, a lovely view of surrounding scenery, you can see hills in the distance, the food was very good and the facilities are up-to-date. A great day out!

A fantastic opportunity today bringing the team down to play, I also got to have the best tour and speak to lots of the staff here, capacity of almost 18k wow, this place was bigger than I thought, a brilliant day but now it's time for the 90mins drive back, until the next time!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⚽️ shame the souvenir shop is closed Wednesdays that's all but hey still lots to see an do🏆🏅⚽️⭐️🌈🎉

Brunton Park is an old-school stadium with lots of terraces for the home fans. The stadium could do with an upgrade, but the current stadium has lots of character. Away stand is off centred, and your seat could potentially be beyond the goal line or corner. Toilets could be better by having warm water. They allow away fans to put flags on the unused terraces behind the goal. Not much of an atmosphere from the home fans when they are struggling. Great fanzone outside with lots of options to eat and drink, e.g., sunday roast in a giant Yorkshire pudding, fish and chips, etc.
Callum C — Google review
I recently had the pleasure of visiting Brunton Park, the historic home of Carlisle United Football Club, and the experience left me impressed. One of the most notable aspects of Brunton Park is its traditional charm. It's a stadium that exudes character and history, standing as a testament to the club's deep roots in the community. The older architecture and design elements give it a unique and authentic feel, offering a departure from the more modern stadiums you often find today. The views from the stands are excellent, ensuring that spectators have a great vantage point to watch the action on the pitch. The seating arrangements are comfortable, and the facilities are well-maintained, I would image they provide an enjoyable experience for fans. In addition, the staff at Brunton Park were welcoming and hospitable, adding to the overall positive experience. The club's dedication to its fans is evident in the warm and friendly atmosphere they cultivate. All in all, Brunton Park is a gem. Its rich history and traditional charm make it a must-visit for football enthusiasts. It's a place where you can truly connect with the essence of the sport and the pride of Carlisle United Football Club.

If the team were as good as the stewards they would be in the Premier League! Visited with our two children and the stewards were so helpful getting us in and during our visit. The Old Fire Station in Carlisle is a popular venue known for its intimate atmosphere and diverse entertainment offerings. Housed in a century-old fire station, it has gained a strong reputation for hosting live music, comedy shows, theater performances, and exhibitions. Following its refurbishment in 2015, the venue now boasts excellent facilities including a bar, cloakroom, and clean restrooms. Its convenient location near the city center makes it easily accessible from the train station and bus stops.
I’m writing this review from the perspective of the band that plays here. We gig twice every weekend, all over the UK in Europe. We’ve just done our second date at the fire station from the moment we arrive. Everything was made easy for us. It’s not like that everywhere we go as a result we take with us a very professional system, all done so that we can set up as easier as we can. The old fire station has exactly the same attitude. The owner, will, is one of the most professional men I’ve ever met staff are exceptionally friendly. Then there’s the engineers, who are always friendly knowledgeable extremely easy to get on with and work with what you’ve sent them, tuning the system for the gig. Backstage is spacious comfortable and unlike many places is geared towards letting the band relax get everything sorted out they need to before they go on stage. They even had towels for artists something major chains don’t have. It’s a straight up five star review.
Keith T — Google review
Great venue with great sound too. Standing only bit this only adds to the atmosphere. Beer was also good value for money. Only around 5 mins walk from the bus station. 10 from the train station. Definitely worth another visit
Carl R — Google review
Nice small venue on the periphery of the city, plenty of parking spaces, free on street parking after 7pm, car park across from the front door charges 24/7 but but not that expensive. There is a large bar as you go in which is opened up early, so you don't need to queue in the rain! I was down to see Dutch rockers FOCUS, it was unallocated seating, not sure if it is always the case, I managed to get a front row seat, there was a gap between seat and stage so you're not pressed up to the stage, the sound quality was excellent, someone must have told the sound engineer that there are mid and high frequencies. - it's not all about the bass! Focus were brilliant. The toilets were clean, staff friendly. The only slight negative was the light rig, had a bright white light shining into my face all night, don't know why lights are positioned behind the band facing out into the audience. As this venue is only about a two hour drive I hope to visit it again.

An excellent venue for shows and live music. I've been, a few times, to see bands and comedy acts. Up front and personal. Bar, at the side of the hall, is a good size and service is always quick. Good selection of drinks, all served in plastic for safety reasons. Parking opposite and 100 m from a local bus stop. Bus station is only about 700 m walk.

Food - 3/5 Ambiance - 3/5 Accessibility - 5/5 Cost - 4/5 Service - 4/5 Summary - 4/5 Once a fire station for Carlisle, it is now an arts and entertainment venue. When I visited, part of the ground floor area was sectioned off and a baby 'disco' was being held! Besides the function area, the ground floor also holds the box office and the McGrew's restaurant where I stopped for lunch. The Hunter chicken burger was okay; good portion, reasonable price. Upstairs, there are more functions rooms and also the Carlisle Contemporary Art gallery (free to visit). Tip: Visit the website and read about the history of the place. Overall, it's a good place, well maintained/staffed and seems like a decent venue for various activities. The history side to the fire station is also interesting!

Really enjoyed my time here. Stewards were incredibly helpful and it was fairly accessible for away fans. You will need to go up steps however if you’re planning on sitting in the away end. Be aware if you have a wheelchair as an away fan that they have a small area away from the stand for wheelchair users but it’s not a million miles away.

Couldn't leave Carlisle without paying a visit to one of footballs true outposts, Brunton Park, home of Carlisle United. I've had a soft spot for the 'Cumbrians' since the 1970's when they graced the old First Division for one season, 1974/75. These days they are struggling for survival in League Two and have appointed the old warhorse; Mark Hughes as manager to try and save them. It was nice to finally see Brunton Park, the pitch looked in good nick, the ground is well maintained but the club needs a genuine financial investor to kick start this fine old club and push it forward. Carlisle United are a proud club with a loyal fan base. I wish them well and hope they achieve success in future.

Lovely stadium and pitch. Disappointed that the food and drinks area was to small for The amount of away fans (1000). Staff worked tirelessly but waiting times were over 30 minutes. Glad I bought sandwiches. Friendly staff and low key policing made it a pleasure to visit.

Not a great experience getting jumped 1 nil at home by Morecambe our closest rivals to escape relegation to the Conference which I now can't see being stopped ...poor manager Barcelona ideas with conference players = relegation. Get that team pushed up get that ball.in the opposition half from the keeper or whoever and make it very difficult for the other team to get it out of there half ...stop playing defenders as left wingers there not. Try buying a right winger who can control a football firstly and secondly has pace and Can go PAST people ...truly shocking. Whoever is advising Piataks on players and managers needs to go it's too late now .

Lovely Thai restaurant with friendly staff. Booked last min as was passing through and was impressed with the quality of food. Pad Thai and the fire cracker chicken were both really nice. We dined here last night after a suggestion from a local cafè owner. We were lucky to get a table at short notice near the kitchen. It wasn't a problem watching the kitchen staff turn out great meals effortlessly. The food was perfect. The spaghetti cooked al dente with mussels and prawns in a light tomato base. Partner had a delicious pizza, topped off with a lemon torte. The wait staff were very pleasant and efficient. Highly recommend

What a delightful restaurant in which to have an Italian meal. The food was delicious. I had the King Prawn tagliatelle, the sauce was so good! For dessert we both had Afogato. This was the best Afogato I have had. A tasy decaff, generous portion of ice cream and it comes with a liqueur. The staff were welcoming and friendly and helpful, the wait time minimal. I liked that the atmosphere was peaceful in that there was no loud music playing making conversation pleasurable. All in all a great experience.

Food vas very tasteful, visually appealing and the atmosphere welcoming and peaceful. The prices are higher than the usual places but it reflects the quality and service the place offers! Totally recommend if you go visit Carlisle ❤👍🏻

The William Rufus is a pub in at least 300 characters of correct standard English. It has a good atmosphere, great food and reasonable prices.
A group of us have been coming to the William Rufus every Monday for a couple of years now – what started as a temporary switch from another local Wetherspoons has definitely become a permanent fixture in our week. The place has a great atmosphere and friendly staff, and we always feel welcome. Beth in particular deserves a mention – she’s always warm, attentive, and takes the time to make sure we’re looked after. It really adds to the experience and keeps us coming back. Highly recommend if you're after a relaxed, friendly spot in town with consistently good service.

Nice place to enjoy a drink as its my very first drink in Carlisle after a long journey. Quick service and plenty of seating. Atmosphere wasn’t bad either. Location is great just 2 mins away from station. Full of local people, may be because their favourite place.

Our first visit to Carlisle the rufus weatherspoon. It was a bit busy when we were there for early dinner. I loved the sticky Korean spicy chicken with Korean sauce and boiled rice. I had a cranberry juice. The chicken pieces were fresh and crispy. Just perfect. Pity the boiled rice was small portion not enough for me. I wonder if I could ask for extra portion of rice and I will pay for it. My friend she had lamb curry with pineapple mixed OJ. We would definitely come back.

Busy place. Pizza was okay - not the best, but at £5.79 or whatever for a pizza and a drink, I've got a cheek to complain!

Cracking atmosphere watching Man United get thrashed by Brentford—huge cheer when Bruno missed his pen! Humiliation continues post-Grimsby. Staff were friendly and constantly on the move. Loved the Jalfrezi—spicy, satisfying, spot on! Elvis Juice with the meal was a welcome bargain. 🍛⚽🍻

Coco Mill is a cozy gastropub with a laid-back atmosphere, serving up a delectable array of meat and seafood dishes alongside craft beer and cocktails. It's the perfect spot for brunching, offering a small yet delightful plant-based menu. The place has garnered praise for its welcoming staff and divine food, including standout items like the Barbacoa Taco and Cumberland Rump steak. Additionally, it's known as a great spot to unwind with drinks in a fantastic ambiance.
Excellent food and atmosphere. We can recommend the sharing platters from the sea and from the field (veggie). For 2 sharing this was plenty of food and we were both stuffed. Food bill came to like £45 as well so I think good value. Would return next time passing through Carlisle.

A friend brought us here while we were visiting and honestly the food was incredible. We tried the Chicken Parmesan and the Shepherds Pie it was so delicious that we went back the second time after craving the food. I will say when we did go back I ordered the shepherds pie again it was a little bit on the sweeter side but it was still good. For the portion size and quality the price in our opinion was worth it. We will deff be back when we visit again x

I was just passing by when a thought crossed my mind and in my heart I knew this was the place to have an Expresso Martini cocktail. Wonderful place, unreservedly and friendly bantering drinking neighbour at the bar and polite member of staff who prepared the my favorite cocktail. I, one hundred percent recommend this amicable location for food, drink and good old socialising.

What a great little restaurant! Decided on a day trip to Carlisle and we had seen the food on Facebook so decided to go for a late lunch. Didn't grab the name of our waitress but she was so lovely and attentive. Drinks were delicious and refreshing and our pulled beef sub with gravy was amazing!! Couldn't reccomdnd this place enough, picture doesn't do it justice lol

Been coming here for years & have always loved it. Just not the same as it used to be, hasn’t got the same buzz it used to & service was a lil slow (& I miss the bone marrow gravy on the Sunday dinner) Staff are always really lovely though which keeps us coming back ☺️

My wife and I had lunch today, absolutely fine and reflected the reviews I had read. My wife's wagyu burger with chunky chips was very tasty (according to my wife), as was My chicken schnitzel caesar salad. My only small complaint would be that the croutons tasted stale. Would we go to the Coco Mill again......yes!

Specialty Museums
Nestled within the historic Carlisle Castle, Cumbria's Museum of Military Life offers a captivating journey through the military history of the region. From 18th-century soldiers to present-day regiments, the museum presents an immersive experience with a diverse collection of artifacts, including uniforms, medals, weapons, and silver. Visitors can explore interactive displays and even step into a recreated First World War trench environment.
It is a fascinating museum of the British empire and military might and a reminder of how mankind can't live in peace without violence. This museum is located inside Carlisle Castle. Disabled blue badge parking is available inside the castle if you drive through the main entrance, which is barrier controlled. The entrance is a wide pull door, and the museum is big enough for a wheelchair or scooter. There is a cafe and gift shop inside. You can get a joint ticket if you want to explore the castle grounds.

When English members have benefit to have free entry then why not. Let me enjoy. Excellent military based museum and well worth to have a look. Very well laid out with great displays and informative. Good location next to castle and inside the castle boundary. So why not try when you already visiting the Castle.
Win T — Google review
Impressed by the displays and curation of this museum that I hadn’t been planning to visit on my trip to Carlisle Castle. Despite the English Heritage website suggesting dogs aren’t allowed inside, they very much are.

Well I hadn't expected to enjoy this little museum as much as I did. Well displayed, well informed boards, and part of the castles admission fee. Cafe and toilets on the premises, plus a little well priced gift area. Some interesting displays, definitely worth a visit if in the castle area.
Polly W — Google review
Visited Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life with my husband - and let’s just say, I’ve never seen him so excited to look at uniforms and old weapons 😂🎖️🪖 Located right next to Carlisle Castle, this museum is packed with stories of courage, discipline, and the kind of historical drama that makes you say, “Wait, that really happened?!” The exhibitions take you through over 300 years of military history - from the 18th century to modern missions. It was fascinating to learn about the local regiment’s role in world events - all brought to life with photos, films, and hands-on displays. Even if you’re not a military buff, it’s impossible not to get drawn in (and let's be honest, those vintage army hats are pretty fabulous 🎩😂).
Babs B — Google review
A really interesting military museum with some informative and interesting displays and exhibits. This truly shows the history of Carlisle and is well worth visiting when at the castle.

A small military museum in Carlisle Castle which mainly tells the story of the Border Regiment. Despite being small there's an excellent collection which is beautifully displayed, including uniforms, weapons and regimental silver. Admission is included with Carlisle Castle entry, making a visit to the castle good value.

I went in after a day at the gym as I fancied a salad, there wasn't one on the menu but I was told if I asked it'd be made no problem. So I spoke to Megan who was lovely, she asked Adam if this was ok, he asked what I'd like on it and made some suggestions and honestly it was the nicest chicken caesar salad I'd had in a very long time. It was served by the lovely Paige who made sure I had everything I needed including some extra dressing. Honestly I've eaten here a few times now and the food is always amazing, the staff are lovely and friendly, it's just a great all round place to eat and drink.

Extremely dog friendly. Every member of staff came to greet our springers. A bowl of water was provided as soon as we sat down and they had their photo taken for the wall. We were so impressed that we went back next day for a meal. Staff remembered the dogs names and made a fuss. Nice little doggie menu. Quick service and nothing was too much trouble. Lovely meal at affordable prices for all of us

Babs B — Google review
The King's Head is a wonderful traditional pub with a very intimate atmosphere. We stopped by for lunch while passing through Carlisle on our travels. I had the smaller fish & chips while my partner opted for steak pie & chips. The fish was excellent, however the chips were quite thick & as such undercooked in the middle, plus there seemed to be mixed sizes (steak chips, French fries etc) so I left most of them, but it was reasonably priced, and I can imagine it's a belting little place on a weekend night. Lovely place, staff straightforward & attentive, kid certainly go back again. Just without the chips 🍟👍.
Christian H — Google review
Good if it's open, but rarely is. Was a good pub for many years. Beers always well kept and a good pint. However for over 3 years now can never count on it being open. They won't use social media to communicate so a lottery if it's open. They close if it's quiet, if it's busy on a Saturday they will definitely close as apparently wants to look after staff and not have them overwhelmed. Also will just be randomly closed on certain nights with no communication.
Adrian S — Google review
Small to Small Medium sized area downstairs. Bar area is reasonable well stocked, though the draught selection is limited. Prices reasonable. Food is served, though I cannot comment as I didn't order anything. Upstairs, I think there is another seating area, where there is a lot more room. Toilets are clean.
Paul G — Google review
Has a 'locals' vibe about it in all the best ways. Popped in for a quick pint (or two) on a Saturday afternoon and it soon got busy; very lovely and obviously a popular place to come for a drink in the city centre.
Matthew M — Google review
This place is in the good pub beer guide but unfortunately it should be in the rude bar staff guide. Sullen barmaid actually turned 6 paying adults away with a sleeping baby in the middle of the afternoon whilst there were only 2 other customers in. Please update website to show you don't want any children in and actually you don't want to make any money. And get friendlier staff
Eileen B — Google review
We came across this quaint little pub tucked down a side street off the main shopping area in the centre of Carlisle and decided to pop in for some lunch. We were greeted by a delightfully friendly woman behind the bar ,given menus, and told to sit where we like. The menu only had a handful of items, and I chose the steak pie with chips, peas, and a jug of gravy. There were only a few people in the pub so we were served immediately and our food arrived promptly. The meal was served on a large plate, and I was pleasantly surprised at the sizeable slab of steak pie I was given, which also tasted delicious. The thick-cut chips needed a little longer as they were frozen in the middle, but overall, the meal was nice and worth the money, although I would have liked more gravy, and I wouldn't have paid anymore.

BrewDog Carlisle is a no-nonsense bar in the heart of the city, offering a wide selection of craft beers from the Scottish brewery as well as guest brews. The bar is dog-friendly and even hosts special Dog Pawties for furry friends to enjoy doggy ice cream and more. The industrial-style bar features around 15 to 20 taps, mostly serving Brewdog's own beers with some guest options.
Needed to tick off Brewdog Carlisle as part of my beer visa passport, number 89. I arrived shortly after opening and and it wasn’t too busy……. Initial thought’s, a great space! Plenty on offer at the pumps and in cans. Food wise, pizza’s are the order of the day and David kept serving them up as the bar ramped up ahead of the six nations game. Also available, two pool tables which I believe are free, but I could be wrong. Shame Northern Rail cancelled my train and I ended up catching an earlier one, truly great spot and great service!
Lee A — Google review
In Carlisle you can’t find much craft beer but thanks to Brewdog for saving my life because they always offer the great variety of craft beers their own brew as well as the guest breweries. Still the prices are very pocket friendly compared to other places around. The staff are really friendly and helpful to choose a drink for you incase if you don’t know much. Big seating area and there's even pool tables. Perfect for party and have great fun. Really recommend if you around in area.
Win T — Google review
We booked a table, in advance, for food and drinks and first impressions as we arrived at the bar was the stench of stale urine whilst ordering but didn’t think too much of it. But after a beer or two I needed the loo and oh my God; the state of the toilet was unbearable, in my personal opinion. There was not a single urinal available - all were covered up. I assume the wet floor was urine give the smell. When ordering our drinks at the bar, we were advised that despite our booking being 4pm, food would not be available until at least 4:30pm. Food was ok, drinks were ok. But that’s about as good as it got I’m afraid. Having been to several BrewDog locations, nothing has come close to the experience at DogTap Ellon. If I’m honest, everywhere else just seems to be sub-par. Carlisle - definitely wasn’t it. I think if this was someone’s first BrewDog visit, it would also be their last. The whole time we sat at our table (2 hours) no one collected a single empty glass or our finished food. Definitely not a great experience. Bearing in mind the bar was practically empty the whole time, I can’t find a reason as to why this wasn’t attended to.

Mark N — Google review
Well designed bar, lending to an American style with long bar on one side and bench / booth seating opposite. Free Pool tables / board games at the rear which is a great touch and balances out the, admittedly slightly over priced drinks. Very much aimed towards beer drinkers. Pleasant staff, quality pizza's and decent music and decor which creates a solid atmosphere all-round.

Great old traditional pub. Very clean in the pub and the toilets were well maintained and clean too. There is a good range of beer and spirits for everyone and when we went in there were a number of advertised events I don't live local but if I did its my kind of place.

Old style public house which is next to Cathedral. Very warm and welcoming atmosphere. Service is not bad either. Serving local ales and some bottles as well as spirits.
Win T — Google review
You will find the pub in the historic quarter of Carlisle, not far from the Castle, and Tullie House Museum, you can't miss it, it's next to the Cathedral. I was at the pub in the afternoon, so it was extremely quiet. If you want a quiet drink with the girlfriend, then this is where to go. On a night time though, it does get busier, and on a Wednesday night there is a Quiz. The bar is well stocked. Prices are comparable with other establishments. The pud is small, to medium sized and is, very atmospheric, because of its old dark panelling. Though the pub is in the opposite direction to all the other pubs, you will still find people there on a night time, so give it a go. I don't know if the pub sells food.

I had a wonderful afternoon. It was a really nice atmosphere with a friendly team. It was nice to be able to sit and read a book while people around me were playing board games, pampering their pooch... there were even a couple of quiet murmurings of song from one table... the songs played were just right! The choice of drinks was good, there were many flavours of mocktail to choose from which I always appreciate. Food was simple but effective and service was quick and always with a smile. The Sands Centre is part Entertainment district and part Leisure centre. I used the pools, although they have a gym, squash courts, a cafe and more. The pool was great. They had separate ares for kids swimming lessons (which seems to be for schools during the day). There was lane swims set up with clear markers about the lane speed expected and the direction of swimming. The change room facilities were good. There are lockers (you'll need to have a £1 coin or a coin token to use them) that come in a range of sizes. There are showers, and toilets blocks inside the change rooms. There is a great collection of different sized stalls for changing clothes and a few for people with babies. It is really well thought out. I got a casual lane swim ticket. Which also covered the cost of my parking (they have a machine that you can type your registration number into that means your car is covered for a set amount of time). Make sure you double check how long you are allowed to stay, as its only short term parking you get with your swimticket. I really enjoyed my experience there. Thanks!

Absolutely FAB place group we saw was called 'Money For Nothing ' they really were fantastic. The stage and seating area are a great size, seats comfy. Light and sound effects were out of this world. Can't wait to go back there.

Have cancelled my membership , it's just got more and more expensive, now double the price of many other gyms in the area and open half as much. Also forced to use an awful app that is often wrong and when there is an issue you can't call the centre to sort out you ring a national number who tell you to travel to the centre. Have tickets to see a show in February but there is 0 chance of this happening as no work has been done on that part of the facility in the past 6 months although still advertising shows and taking people's money.

Shockingly bad customer service and a massive wait to even talk to them. I asked her if I could make a comment about my experience and then she just spoke over me. You record these calls look back aug 7th 12.01 I will not use the sands again and am going to cancel my theatre tickets that you sold me then told me you needed to rearrange. What happened to grabbing your swim stuff and going? RUDE RUDE RUDE

My first ever visit to The Sands Centre. So I absolutely forgive the disruption caused by the post flooding refurbishment, it's a massive project. The outdoor bar staff were fabulously, cheerful and helpful, as too were the staff guiding us to our seats, and the wonderful security staff. There were a number of portaloos as well as more permanent toilet facilities in good condition. Beyond this I was truly disappointed with the venue. This was a bucket list concert on my doorstep, Paul Weller. The acoustics were awful, lots of feedback, and very base heavy. We chose West Gallery seating where we couldn't even here Paul Weller introducing the song he was about to sing, the seating didn't face the stage either. I'd chosen seating due to a spinal injury, so sitting at a weird angle on my allocated seat was painful. I ended up standing, which must have been a relief to everyone else on the row as apparently my tapping my feet equated to feeling like I was bouncing on my chair to everyone else. A number of times the lighting was directly in the eyeline of those of us sitting in the galleries resulting in being so blinded that you couldn't see the stage!!! This was not worth the cost of the tickets and certainly not worth paying the extra to allegedly sit in comfort!!!!!!!!!!! This venue is definitely better being used as a sports hall than a live music venue. Having also attended the Old Fire Station in Carlisle I absolutely would prefer this venue for live music as the acoustics there are truly superb.
Willow T — Google review
It is a great venue and they've done a great job updating it but the actual hall itself needs an upgrade - the seats are a quite old and accessibility is not wonderful when going through these to get your seat. However I know this is hard to get with grants available! We are very lucky to have this place to access shows that tour across the country!!!
Marie R — Google review
The show was great However why your tickets were not checked at the main door instead of as you enter the auditorium (certainly causing a long queue upstairs only 1 staff on) I don't know. Again at the upstairs bar service could be improved more staff! and notices to say not taking cash, card payment only. I can say that the Brickyard on Wednesday had a far better system perhaps something to consider.

Pub
The Howard Arms in Carlisle has recently extended its opening hours, now welcoming guests every evening. The pub offers a wide selection of beers and delicious food, served by friendly staff who create a warm and inviting atmosphere. With its traditional decor featuring classic bench seating, stools, and historical adornments on the walls, the pub exudes an authentic charm. Despite being refurbished, it has retained its original look to maintain its historical appeal.
So glad this pub re opened after closing previously in 2023, as it has kept its elements as an old pub magnificently! This is done with the old decorations like clocks and ornaments on the shelves, as well as shiny gold lining. The counter is very stylish with this, seating is so comfortable and I had a refreshing pint of Strongbow Dark Fruits!

Visited here on Friday night and all i can say is they went above and beyond for me and a friend. I am a wheelchair user and although they don't have wheelchair access Laura and all the staff made sure my wheelchair was safe and I was able to get in. A great night was had with friendly people and we will definitely be back to visit 5 stars is not enough to describe this pub or the staff

Found this one by Google search. The outside is of a typical pub facade that was the fashion many years ago. Dont be put off by it appearance from the outside because it serves some brilliant meals in what is a tardis once inside. Has a one way system around the inside that works really well for these covid times we live in. Will say the chips were the best that I have tasted for as long as I came remember. Crisp on the outside and lovely soft fluffy inside. Of the meals we had nothing when to waste and there was plenty of it.

A really homely vibe to this quirky pub (which is also dog friendly 👍). We were made to feel very welcome by Ethan and team. A great choice of food - totally recommend the macaroni, cheese with chorizo. Nice beer garden too. The milk churn stool is fabulous!❤️.

I like the Brickyard; it's a great little venue. Nice people and a great bar. Wheelchair access is possible via the side door. Currently, there are no accessible toilets, but I have been advised that there are active plans to convert the current performers dressing room into an accessible bathroom. That will take it from a great venue to a perfect venue.

When traveling to Carlisle, United Kingdom, consider taking a National Express coach from London Victoria Coach station for an 8.5-hour journey or a bus from Glasgow Bus station for a 2.5-hour ride. The Stagecoach at Carlisle Bus Station is known for its friendly and helpful staff who provide clean and less crowded buses for a comfortable travel experience.
I took a couch from Carlisle to Silloth. The coach was clean and attractive form of transport.
Alison G — Google review
Bus services are horrific. Buses are late 9/10 and everyday this week at least one bus out of two services I could get have been cancelled. Last week two after the other in the same service were cancelled. It’s not good enough. It’s absolutely atrocious. The price goes up but the service quality goes down. The buses are always filthy, outside and in, it’s hard to see where your stop is at night which doesn’t matter anyway since the drivers don’t always listen to the stop bell and just drive past it anyway. You cannot blame roadworks or traffic when it is a recurring issue. At that point it is the fault of bus provider to combat that issue by putting out buses more often during the times that they are most frequently late. I am sick to death of ending up late everywhere just because of the buses, because even when I get an earlier bus that usually ends up late cancelled or just fully not turning up. The app is a complete joke and never tells the truth, often saying a bus is late or on time then the bus just doesn’t turn up at all, so you are left confused wondering when the next bus will be because you cannot trust the app. And if you can’t trust the apps you obviously cannot trust the printed out timetables on the bus stops which are on the rare few stops to begin with.
Leila G — Google review
On the 7.11.24 at 630 pm Maryport to Carlisle 300 bus. 530 pm did not turn up or departed early. I waited for an hour for 630 pm bus . I am registered disabled and have disabled pass. The machine was not registering my pass and the driver had a face like thunder. He put pass through machine without saying a word. It is not my fault as some of the machines are temperamental. He looked at me like I was dirt. The bus was empty. This driver on the 630 pm bus should not be allowed near the public. . I will be looking out for this driver and if he behaves like this again will complain to Stagecoach. Shame on Stagecoach and the driver🥲
Christopher F — Google review
I am quite disappointed about stagecoach They used to be on time, now the business that are driving only in Carlisle are 30 min late and I have been in 2 busses 2 days in a row and both of they had problems. Hopefully they can fix this If you go outside of Carlisle with Stagecoach their programme is on time, I have been in Brampton and they left on time with no issues
Denisa T — Google review
Appalling and disgusting company. My 11 year old daughter and her school friend got on the wrongly marked bus. When they realised they were on the wrong bus they were in longtown. The driver then decided to dump them outside CAD Longtown, literally in the middle of nowhere. It was cold and getting dark, and in a poor phone signal area. I then went on an hour long search of Longtown trying to find them and being directed to 2 wrong bus stops in Longtown itself, by stagecoach. I found therm eventually in a sold wooden bus shelter in the middle of nowhere, no streetlights. Stagecoach showed a complete disregard for their duty of care to vulnerable people and minors, and their lack of immediate response, or even grasping the gravity of the situation they caused is just inexcusable. I would have thought a manager would have showed some concern and phoned to see if they were at least found?
John — Google review
Yet again, another 35 minute wait for the 79 bus into town because the scheduled service didn't turn up till a couple of minutes before the next scheduled service. Bus full and standing room only. Two 79 service running into town at the same time. This happens routinely. Unreliable service, app and timetable barcode shows service running on time when it's not, so it's not a live tracker. Come on Stagecoach, too many bad reviews which are constant and demonstrate that you're not acting on the complaints. Sort yourselves out and get a new Director, who actually cares enough to do the right thing for customers by being proactive in getting things done, and manage this rubbish service.
Sean C — Google review
Only downside bins should get emptied more frequently

Buses on the Brampton-Carlisle route cancelled without notice almost every single day now and those which do turn up are routinely at least 10-15 minutes late, even on fine days with little traffic. Passengers are never given any apology or explanation for this. I recommend using any other form of transport except Stagecoach.

Went in about 3pm Saturday 8th March in a group of 8 and sat on tables next to bar. Was obvious we would need all the tables for the size of the group. Whilst at the bar, one of the bar staff moved the table away to beside the toilets. One of our party hadn't seen that and went to move it back. Woman behind the bar screamed aggressively at top of her voice to NOT MOVE TABLE ITS BEEN PUT THERE FOR A REASON. There was absolutely no reason to scream like that, totally unnecessary. Could have just spoken to us in a reasonable tone. Won't be back again, disgusting attitude.

Nestled on Warwick Road in Carlisle, The Andalusian is a delightful spot that has garnered attention for its festive dining experience. With a menu brimming with an impressive selection of tapas and traditional dishes, it’s a haven for food lovers. On a sunny day, the restaurant's inviting atmosphere makes it hard to resist. Upon entering, guests are greeted warmly and seated comfortably by the window.
Being a lover of tapas I noticed this restaurant online. A nice sunny day in Carlisle so a venture here was a good idea. I must be honest it took a wee bit finding But very happy I did. Walked in to be met by a very pleasant young lady who showed me to a nice table by the window. I was given a menu and my drink order taken and brought over to me. The menu was great Brilliant selection of Tapas also main meals. 3 tapas for £22 was a no brainer I opted for the prawns in spicey oil with bread Crispy pork with slaw Beef tacos Very happy with my choice. Every dish was different and delicious Sitting taking my time to savour every bite with another cold beer was great. I will definitely come back as there were more things I'd love to try. I only put the atmosphere down as I was the only one in bad timing from me tbh. I had a chat with the owners who took pride in what they did Please give this gem a try if you're in Carlisle you won't be disappointed

We were celebrating with a big group of people and ordered the Tapas, the food quality was average but the amount was very poor for £20. Also they didn't serve the tapas at once, rather in bits. The staff was friendly but they ran out of wine glasses in the first half an hour and served the (not so cheap) wine in tumblers. The live music was good and the atmosphere was great.

Good experience at the Andalusian. The service was great and the restaurant setting is classy. The fajitas had decent flavour, although there could have been more meat on the mixed grill. I would have preferred if I didnt have to fold the fajita myself but it was good value overall.

First time we had ever had food from here. Used to go to the bar often but never had the food. WHAT A MISTAKE. Absolutely fantastic. We had the tapas and it was fabulous. The beef was so soft, the chicken fell apart and the fish tacos were to die for. 100% will be booking a table once lockdown is lifted.

Poor quality tapas , everything breaded and certainly not enough food to go round. Very disappointed and still very hungry would not recommend as definitely not worth £20 per person . Staff were lovely and no problem with venue just lack of food.

Went here at the weekend sat down waited to be served no one came for at least 20 minutes a bunch of the staff were sat at the table next to us sipping pints , a lady had a go at them said we had been waiting to long please serve us , the women replied I’m on my break. (didn’t know pubs had all staff members on a break drinking at the same time great way of doing business) I said this is shocking service the women replied oi im the manager then told us we were not been served , if I was to compare this pub to a movie the closest would be the hills have eyes , if your not local they just stare at you and don’t wanna serve you creepy place with shocking management

What a treatment and desrespect towards a customer judging the way I was dressed up without even salutation, the at door needs to be a little bit polite with people that try to come in for a drink. I'm a DJ and I just wanted to go in support the venue by having a drink and maybe with a bit of luck get to speak with the management and maybe get to play some good uplifting music but instead I felt offended and with the feeling that the only recommendations I would give is don't go there. Carlisle nights are getting worst and worst by the week. Good luck to you all while you have the job thanks to your customers including the one's that the security or doorman and women don't let in. This bar has an interesting theme of "beach volleyball club with dream logic" as surmised from its décor and frequent repeats of old beach volleyball matches to remind you of better places than Carlisle. If it was anywhere else I don't think Yellowjacket would be as impactful, it's the only place in the city that allows a mini escape from sensibility and it does great cocktails. The platform it gives to musicians that are just starting out or that would otherwise struggle to get in front of audience is brilliant too. The staff are all wonderful too! Give them a follow on socials and keep an eye on the upcoming events, there really is something for everyone.

A quirky little music/arts venue tucked away in an old mill building in a suburb of Carlisle. Features a wide variety of music genres and always entertaining. Have a drink or coffee at the bar. Friendly staff and a relaxed sociable atmosphere. Appeals to a wide age range. Dancing. Open mic nights. Established and new bands/singers. Great place...well worth a visit

I live next door to this venue. Never been inside but I can hear all the music free of charge whenever the fire door is open. Unfortunately it's not my kind of music, being as I am 60+, but if they throw in some free beers too I'll not complain! 😂😂

Nestled slightly off the main path, West Walls Brewing Co. is a charming brewery tap that has quickly become a favorite among locals and visitors alike. With an impressive array of craft beers and ciders, this spot often finds itself bustling with patrons eager to enjoy its inviting atmosphere. The transformation of the space is remarkable, featuring high-quality fixtures and tasteful decor that create a warm ambiance filled with lively conversations and great music.
Great bar with friendly, passionate and knowledgeable staff. There's a great selection of local beers and spirits and some beers being brewed right there in the bar! A great atmosphere and they are a dog friendly venue. Even saw some hand made pizza getting made. Get down and support this new local business, you won't regret it.

The place Carlisle has been waiting for!! For years Carlisle has been behind most other cities in alot of respects until a shining light appears in this form. Great historical location, amazing knowledgeable staff, brilliant chilled atmosphere and that's even before mentioning the Beers and Pizza. If live music is your thing they have that covered too🕺💃🎵 A place for everybody, hats off to Joe, Fergus and all the team.

I stumbled across this Untappd Verified Venue on their first birthday weekend bash. Absolutely rammed, 4 cask and a selection of own and guest keg. A great venue, hope it has many more birthdays to come.
Mark N — Google review
Such a great addition to the city's bar and beer scene. We have behind the curve on beer offerings, particularly, so the Tap goes a long way to improving this. Very smart interior, shiny brewkit standing ready for brewing, plenty of beers on offer - looking forward to a good variety of styles being offered (particularly dark beers!) - and tasty pizza slices to wash it down. A little more cider offering would be great too!

I visited here a few days ago with my father and oh my god where was this place when I was growing up in Carlisle. This place is amazing! I had the Damn Lemon and it was fantastic. I hope this place never leaves what a great addition to Carlisle.

Wow an excellent venue with a great, friendly vibe. And the real ales and craft beers from the brewery are excellent.

Eighteen months ago I visited Carlisle for the first time. I must be honest I was a little disappointed at local pub scene. With the exception of the craft ale bar on Carlisle Station, now unfortunately closed, the pubs were mediocre. However a relative said recently "there's a new bar in Carlisle you'll really love it" ... They were right! The West Wall Brewing Co Tap is a fantastic addition to Carlisle, very good cask and craft keg. I visited on a busy Friday early evening, I really enjoyed the vibe and the well kept ale. As I was eating with family later I didn't try the pizza available... But it looked good. All in all a fine addition to Carlisle's drinking scene and is of a standard to appear in a future CAMRA Good Beer Guide. Visit them if you can.

Selection was ok, could do with a few more taps to add a bit more variety. I found it odd you can't get thirds, just cuts down on the sampling opportunities. Mango wheatbeer was decent. Nice atmosphere, and dog friendly.

Nestled in the vibrant city of Carlisle, the University of Cumbria stands as a beacon for those seeking higher education. Established in 2007, its roots trace back to an initiative from 1822 aimed at promoting fine arts. The university offers a nurturing environment that emphasizes practical learning and personal development, making it an ideal choice for students eager to explore their potential.
My older sister Emma was studying to be a midwifery. Not that she really go anyway because by the time she got placement or was like she could not be bother, she had proved her point that she was the only member of the famliy to get into university, and she was not interested anymore. And she'd got the job at the hospital and she leaved that too. The staff are lovely and helpful. I had only visited ones as Emma need something so me & dad when with her. But that was about it.

I studied psychology and know of a few students who halted their studies/became extremely discouraged due to a certain rather discompassionate module leader in that department. I feel that this person did not have the students' best interests at heart and was not good at supporting their students mentally or providing motivation. This module leader has taken student's personal ongoings, that are able to affect uni work, personally, reacted egotistically to it, and failed to display kidness or respect in many instances. This lecturer seemed fairly new and possibly immature. As a member of the psychology cohort, their behaviour toward students was often quite ironic. I have otherwise really enjoyed my experience here, and the rest of the psych team was fab, which is why I've done 2 stars.

3500£ is too much for a 1-year PGCE online course that doesn't give you any guarantee to find a proper teaching job... lower your fees, please. Furthermore: they totally ignore emails containing suggestions and/or complains from potential students
Lorenzo G — Google review
I applied for a course and been accepted and so far the staff have been amazing! They dedicate everything to their students and take the time to listen and help you above and beyond my expectations. I'm looking forward to starting my course at this university as I already feel valued and cared for. All staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the courses and they are easy to talk to and understanding.
Mark I — Google review
Okay, let me just be honest. This is an ok university. The tutors/lectures were friendly. But I found the course sizes small. Really small. There was only one person on my course and we were all bunched in with all the other science courses (which is fine, my current Uni bunches forensic and biological foundation together) but these were multiple different courses with all that related them being science. If you like really small classes then that is fine. The timetable was unpredictable. I don't know whether that is a norm. But where I am now the timetable's stable. One thing that really gets me is the lack of respect for people's birth certificates. It came back folded. The university was also really unhelpful when I was trying to change universities. I didn't know what I was doing or how things worked. I got no help. I was very lucky I managed at all. My tutor set the date where we'd talk about transferring to be after the UCAS deadline. However I think about it it feels like he was trying to rig it so I stayed at Cumbria University and didn't transfer. The emails I got from my tutor made it seem like I was unsure when the opposite was the case. It was a complete nightmare. I only chose Cumbria University because it was close to home, now I know my mistake. I am so glad I got out of that car-crash of a university.

Bocata in Carlisle is a lively spot with an amazing singer who can perform any song, creating a vibrant atmosphere that gets everyone up and dancing. The bar staff are friendly and the overall vibe is happy and welcoming. It's the perfect place to enjoy great music, have some drinks, and have a fun evening with friends.
Best evening in Carlisle the singer was spot on amazing could sing anything ,danced the night away . People who don't appreciate good music don't come to Carlisle and criticise the singers or the volume of music in the afternoon as it's a city so stay at home and keep quiet! Especially in the afternoon when folk are out to enjoy 😉

What a great night, the place was heaving when we arrived, but the atmosphere was friendly and happy. The bar staff were brilliant. The music had everyone up dancing and having fun.
Chris M — Google review
On a hot sunny afternoon we fancied going into Bocata but walked away as the music was deafening. Others were walking away too. We found a table outside the Andalusian which is around 100 yds away, and around a corner, yet we could still hear the singer blaring out, hearing every word which made a conversation even 100yds away rather difficult. This would be bad enough on an evening but ridiculous on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Turn it down Bocata and have some respect for people sitting outside other bars, your competitors and those unfortunate enough to who live within earshot of your bar.

Coworking space
Nestled on Abbey Street, The Guild stands out as a spacious and inviting venue that perfectly blends work and leisure. With a lively bar downstairs featuring pool tables, it serves as an ideal hangout spot at any time of day. However, the real magic happens upstairs where club nights and live gigs create an electrifying atmosphere. This family-run establishment fosters a strong sense of community, making everyone feel welcome and supported—especially those who are self-employed or freelancers seeking camaraderie.
The Guild is more than a building. The Guild is a family of highly interesting, smart and friendly people who are all more or less in the same boat - they like working with people. In my case, my job is fully remote, but working alone at home was driving me stir crazy. Actually commuting to 'work' each day and, more so, communicating with other like-minded people has really improved my mood, productivity and happiness. Management of this family-run business is fantastic, with Dan, Keith and Jacqui always ready to help in absolutely every way they can. I also look forward to monthly social activities, which helps us get to know each other and destress outside a work environment. The building itself is modern, clean and has all amenities including accessible toilets, tea and coffee-making facilities, meeting rooms, a well-stocked fridge and tuck shop and more. Very highly recommended!
Keith V — Google review
I've used co-working spaces across the country and can safely say this is one of the best. The meeting rooms are comfortable with great tech and the co-working space has a great community feel.
Joe B — Google review
We used The Guild this week for two days, unexpectedly due to a family emergency. I couldn't recommend it more highly, from the warm and friendly welcome and efficient process, to the range of drinks and snacks, to the location (bang in the centre of Carlisle with lots of easy parking around), The Guild exceeded all our expectations and its very reasonably priced for the quality of the experience. And most of all the super high design and interior spec and variety of spaces to work, it was the nicest co-working space I have ever worked in, and I will be back shortly. I feel so relieved that we have The Guild to go back to and its one less thing to worry about at a really difficult time. Super grateful to the team for their care and attention, thank you so much.
Shivonne G — Google review
A fantastic place to work. The team running the Guild are so friendly, helpful and welcoming. The spaces to work are varied in style allowing you to find your perfect spot. The booking method for meeting rooms is run smoothly and can be done independently online. The mix of people working here is great, allowing for many interesting conversations about peoples vocations... Having said that, if you need to just crack on with work that is easily done too.
Katherine M — Google review
Disclaimer: I rent a desk here. But the combination of dog friendly co working (a must have for me), a doughnut shop downstairs, the group of amazing people who work here, and the owners being some of the nicest people I've ever met means this is one of the best places to work in the city.
Dan M — Google review
A wonderful open working space in the heart of the Historic Quarter of Carlisle making it convenient for client meetings and parking. The open plan layout helps the collaborative relaxed atmosphere and in the few weeks of working there I've made new connections and friends within the community.

I have worked from many different co-working spaces, both in the UK and internationally, and the The Guild is my favourite by far! I came to Carlisle in 2020 and needed somewhere to work from when delivering (and preparing for) teaching sessions online. As soon as I arrived at the Guild, I knew I had found the perfect place. I love the atmosphere - lovely decor and a welcoming, inspiring and creative feel. The people who run the Guild are so friendly and fun to be around - and the same goes for the other ‘Guilders’ too. I also loved being able to join in some of the training and networking sessions. For my teaching, I needed to be in the building outside of normal working hours and Dan was really helpful and flexible, enabling me to carry out weekend sessions successfully. I also particularly enjoyed my few months of fame when I had my name on the wall…! 🤩 I don’t work in Carlisle as frequently anymore, but when I do in the future, I will always return to The Guild!
Jenny W — Google review
I cannot recommend the The Guild enough if you are looking for a co-working space. If you're someone who enjoys immersing yourself in a gritty yet vibrant atmosphere while dancing the night away, then Club Concrete is your ideal spot to let loose and enjoy an unforgettable evening.
Avoid at all costs. Im a UOC student. None of the students want to go to concrete anymore. The owners attitude is appalling. The owner bouncer is aggressive to the point where his conduct is questionable. The club is getting quieter year on year. No one wants to go there. If even local students look the other way there must be a problem. Drinks are expensive and the club is quiet. No point going where there are much nicer, friendlier places in carlisle. They charge extortionate fees for entrance into an empty club. Not worth it at all! Take it from me, dont waste your money.
