The Old Bazaar in Skopje is a lively and colorful area, showcasing the Ottoman architectural style with its mosques, markets, shops, and cafes. Visitors can immerse themselves in the city's culture by exploring museums like The National Archeology & Ethnology Museum and The Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art. Walking along the Kaldrma roads, also known as Sampietrini to foreigners, offers a glimpse into traditional Skopje with antique shops and quaint cafes.
The Old Bazaar in Skopje is a must-see destination filled with history, vibrant culture, and lively atmosphere. Wandering through the cobbled streets and maze-like alleys, you’ll discover everything from traditional shops and galleries to cozy coffee houses and excellent restaurants. The architecture blends Ottoman and Byzantine styles, with highlights like the Mustafa Pasha Mosque and historic inns, fully immersing visitors in centuries of heritage. Shopping here is a real experience—local vendors offer handmade crafts, antiques, and souvenirs at very reasonable prices. As you explore, the scent of grilled kebabs, fresh bread, and Turkish coffee fills the air. The area is also known for its friendly service and rich blend of Macedonian and Albanian cultures. The bazaar is not just about commerce; it’s a center for cultural events, nightlife, and people-watching. Whether you visit early in the morning for a quiet stroll or at sunset to see the stone streets glowing under golden lights, you’ll be captivated by the energy and charm of this part of Skopje. It’s well worth dedicating 2-3hours to truly soak it all in.
Hynek — Google review
The Old Bazaar in Skopje Old Town is a place that could be a charming dive into the city’s Ottoman past, but it ends up being an overwhelming and uncomfortable experience. The architecture is undeniably interesting, with its narrow cobblestone streets, old stone buildings, and remnants of a bygone era that give it a certain historical allure. The preserved shops, caravanserais, and traditional facades offer a glimpse into Skopje’s past, and for history buffs, this could be a highlight. However, the atmosphere is marred by issues that make it hard to enjoy. The area is overcrowded with gypsies, some of whom engage in persistent begging that feels intrusive and, at times, intimidating. This detracts significantly from the experience, turning a leisurely walk into a stressful navigation through constant solicitations. Additionally, the strong presence of Muslim culture, including frequent calls to prayer echoing from what feels like countless mosques, can be jarring for visitors not accustomed to it. While this is part of the area’s cultural fabric, the sheer volume and intensity can feel overwhelming, especially when combined with the chaotic crowds. The bazaar’s authenticity is a double-edged sword—it’s vibrant and bustling, but the lack of order and the aggressive street interactions make it feel less like a cultural gem and more like a disorganized mess. The absence of visible efforts to manage the crowds or maintain a welcoming environment for tourists only adds to the frustration. For every moment of architectural charm, there’s an equal dose of discomfort that makes the visit feel like a chore. In short, the Old Bazaar has the potential to be a fascinating stop in Skopje, but the intrusive begging and relentless noise from nearby mosques make it far less appealing. It’s a shame, as the historical elements deserve better presentation.
Hristiyan V — Google review
The Old Bazaar in Skopje was an unforgettable experience that truly captured the charm and spirit of the city. Walking through its narrow cobbled streets, I felt surrounded by history, with Ottoman-era architecture, old inns, and beautiful mosques creating a unique and timeless atmosphere. The blend of cultures and traditions gave the place a vibrant and authentic character. I loved browsing the small shops filled with traditional crafts, jewelry, and souvenirs, and the aroma of local food and coffee made the visit even more delightful. The lively yet welcoming atmosphere made it easy to spend hours exploring. The Old Bazaar was a perfect mix of history, culture, and everyday life—a highlight of my trip to Skopje.
Mohsin R — Google review
historic marketplace that has been a hub of trade and culture since the Ottoman period. Lined with mosques, hammams, and artisan shops, it blends Eastern and Western influences, offering a vibrant glimpse into the city’s multicultural past and living traditions. Enjoy walking and around but be aware - on Sunday only few shops and restaurants are open, most of the shops are closed.
Matej S — Google review
Visiting this place is like taking a trip back in time. It is one of the largest and oldest bazaars in the Balkans, dating back to the 12th century. The narrow cobblestone streets are filled with Ottoman-era architecture. The atmosphere is vibrant, full of craft shops, jewelers, cafes and restaurants. I found it great for a stroll, buying simple souvenirs and soaking up a genuine atmosphere.
Luana B — Google review
A very interesting place, calm and vibrant in the same time. Worth to give it some time, both during daytime and in the evening, not only for shopping or having a beer or a coffee, but for a slow walk, to enjoy its history and spirit.
Pirvu I — Google review
Charming bazar with great food, but watch the weather Visited on 26 October 2025 and spent about 2 hours exploring and trying food. The Old Bazar is a cute, small, historic area full of character, with lots of different things to try — perfect for wandering, taking in the architecture, and sampling local treats. We especially enjoyed some lokma at Lokmades Skopje, which was absolutely delicious! It was a bit rainy during our visit, and some roads had standing water due to poor drainage, so I’d suggest visiting on sunny days for a more comfortable experience. Overall, a must-visit spot for those wanting a taste of traditional Skopje and local flavors. ✅ Recommended.
Enrei P — Google review
The Old Bazaar in Shkup is simply phenomenal. The variety of shops, traditional craftsmen, and inviting restaurants is truly impressive. Walking through its narrow streets feels like stepping back in time, as if the modern world briefly fades away. This place isn’t just historically significant — it also carries the unmistakable cultural heritage of the Albanian people. A visit is always worth it.

The Millennium Cross is a prominent monument located at the highest point of Vodno Mountain near Skopje, Macedonia. Standing at 66 meters tall, it was built in 2002 to commemorate 2,000 years of Christianity. Visitors can access the cross via a cable car and enjoy picturesque views of the city below. The area also offers opportunities for outdoor activities such as trekking on mountain trails and exploring historical landmarks like the Skopje Aqueduct.
It was good! Cable car was great, the attendants unlike in some other cities, like in Funchal and Santiago, with cable cars do not rudely ask you to ride with strangers or fill it up that you do not enjoy the ride! (In one of the photos it was filled up because they choose to and it was on the way down)
Charlie C — Google review
Currently closed so only able to ascend to the foot of the cross and not go inside. Area around is in need of some TLC, as there are limited facilities, a good deal of rubbish scattered on the mountainside and just portaloos if you need the toilet. Having said that the view is amazing on all sides and the ride up in the cable car is quick and great value (100MKD per person) so if you have a spare hour or two it's worth a visit.
Idris E — Google review
Impressive structure. Great view. There is food and drnk at the top. The tram ride up is great (windows could have been cleaner).
Roundglendive — Google review
Cool place with nice views. It's missing some toilets and maybe some lovelier cafes/restaurants. Still, definitely worth visiting for the views but also to see the HUGE cross close-up.
Vlad C — Google review
You will need to use Cable Car to reach the top easily. It costs only 100 MKD (nearly 2 euros) for two way. There are options to hike but might take a lot of time. Be aware of the timing of Cable Car. Runs only every 30 mins. The top requires around 15-20 mins to visit unless you wanna hang out and enjoy the view for longer time.
Amiel S — Google review
Sad some "idiots" build something right next to the cross (comm tower) which kinda destroys the vibe. To get the best view of Skopje, take a right down a path next to the cable car building, which gives a great view of Skopje . But also go behind the cross, where u can find some platforms overlooking a beautiful valley
ForSeTi — Google review
Nice to go up with the cable car and magnificent view! Unfortunately the lift in the cross is broken down, and the place is empty and rundown. You can get something to drink but no more than that.
Johan R — Google review
I hiked all the way from the city center via "Dimitar" trail. The view of the city and the hike itself is very nice. The route is just not maintained very well and the different trails are hard to find since the signs are very rare or even destroyed. All in all nice if you want to leave the crowded city for some hours.

Mustafa Paša Mosque, situated on a hillside overlooking Skopje's Old Bazaar, is a well-preserved 15th-century mosque with stunning Islamic patterns and decorations reminiscent of those found in Turkey. The mosque features a peaceful rose garden and offers breathtaking views of the old town. Visitors can explore the interior when there are no religious activities, leaving their shoes at the entrance as per tradition.
Visiting the Mustafa Pasha Mosque in Skopje was a peaceful and inspiring experience. The moment I entered the courtyard, I was struck by the beauty of its Ottoman architecture and the calm atmosphere that surrounded the mosque. Its elegant dome, slender minaret, and intricate details made it one of the most stunning landmarks I saw in the city. Inside, the mosque was serene and beautifully decorated, with intricate patterns and a sense of history that added to its charm. The well-kept gardens around it offered a quiet place to pause and reflect, away from the busy city. The Mustafa Pasha Mosque was both spiritually uplifting and historically fascinating—a true gem of Skopje.
Mohsin R — Google review
Had a chance doing our prayer in this beautiful old mosque. The ablution is outside. The mosque is not that big. It's built in 1492 during ottoman empire. The mosque is largely intact from its original state and no additions have been made. It has 2 floors with narrow stairs where the second floor is for women prayer hall. However, if no crowd, the women can pray at 1st floor at the women prayer hall area.
Jamaliah S — Google review
Beautiful mosque to spiritually relax and do praying of afternoon while exploring the old town.
Habib — Google review
beautiful mosque which you can visit as a tourist so long as you are respectful and cover up. nice gardens as well. sometimes I like to think of a different life wherest I am but a small kitten, running around the gardens in a mosque, with no thoughts of particular importance, feeling the grace of god sustaining me day after day…just shower thoughts I guess
Antonia P — Google review
Well worth the hike up the hill. See Skopje Fortress while you are up here. Nice garden to sit in before or after.

This old Turkish mosque is in the centre of Skopje old mmarket which reminds me of old Turkish shopping and eatery districts. It is a small and pretty mosque. You may enjoy shopping and eating traditional food around.

The Mother Theresa Memorial House in Skopje is a modern museum and memorial dedicated to the life and legacy of the renowned Catholic nun, Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, also known as Mother Teresa. The building's architecture combines contemporary design with traditional elements and features an eclectic design along with a striking modern chapel.
This place is not something great or splendid like other tourist attraction. But that is the life of mother Theresa. It is small and free. It will remind her life. That’s why this place is so meaningful and symbolic.
Mothusi — Google review
The Mother Teresa Memorial House in Skopje was a deeply moving and inspiring place to visit. From the moment I arrived, I was touched by the peaceful atmosphere and the way the building beautifully honored her life and legacy. The architecture itself was striking, blending modern design with a sense of reverence that made the visit feel very special. Inside, I loved exploring the exhibits that showcased her journey, from her early life in Skopje to her incredible humanitarian work around the world. The personal items, photographs, and stories gave me a profound appreciation of her compassion and dedication. Visiting the Mother Teresa House was not only memorable but also uplifting—a true highlight of my time in Skopje.

A beautiful and inspiring place to visit in Skopje! The Mother Teresa Memorial House is free to enter and filled with information, photos, and exhibits about her life and work. It’s very well organized and peaceful, making it easy to learn about her incredible story. Highly recommended for anyone interested in history, culture, or just looking for a meaningful stop while exploring the city.

The house of Mother Teresa is a must visit place when you come to Skopje! It’s small and free entrance. There’s a souvenir shop at the first floor and exhibition hall at the second floor. At the third floor, a serene church is there! The entire visiting time is around 10-20 min!
Frank Y — Google review
Nice presentation of her life story both in Macedonia, Ireland and finally India. Her being awarded the Noble Peace Prize. Of her canonisation to her passing. On the way to the small chapel there are photos showing the many famous people she had met from the Reagans to Queen Elizabeth II.

Tribute to one of the biggest woman of 20th century. Who would say she was born in Skopje (of course Wikipedia..)… very nice small house, visit wont take long but gives you the basics about her life you should know. Entrance free, donations possible.

I found out many interesting details about Mother Theresa, especially details related to her early life and prior becoming a missionary, by visiting this memorial house. The entrance is free of charge.

Stepping into the Mother Teresa Memorial, you're immediately struck by its simplicity. It's an ordinary place, yet deeply solemn and humble, radiating the very essence of where love was born, nurtured, and spread across the globe by open and generous hearts.

Nestled in the heart of Macedonia, the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle for Independence stands as a grand testament to the nation's quest for sovereignty. Officially inaugurated on September 8, 2011, this expansive museum spans over 6,400 square meters and is dedicated to chronicling the rich history of Macedonia's fight against Ottoman rule and its eventual independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.
Absolutely amazing museum! It’s huge, with three well-organized floors that follow a clear chronological timeline. The wax figures and artwork are incredibly detailed, and most of the info is translated into English, which was very helpful. The stained glass room at the end is stunning—definitely the highlight. Tickets were affordable and also do student discount
Bilaal K — Google review
This is a great place to understand part of the history of the great Macedonia. The ticket is around 5 or 8 euros. There's access to bathrooms. It's amazing to see the realistic of the wax figures, the flags, the attires, etc. There are original parts of the wars as well (war cars, cameras, helmets, paper letters, Utensils, maps and so on). It's definitely a place to visit.
Jhon S — Google review
The atmosphere of the museum was wonderful. If you’re interested in different cultures, this is definitely a place worth visiting. It features wax figures and historical information. I spent about two hours exploring the entire museum from start to finish, and it was absolutely worth it. At the entrance, they mentioned a student discount in the summer of 2025, the student ticket was around 120 denars. If you’re in the area and looking for a place to explore, I highly recommend it.
Yaren — Google review
I don’t often write reviews, but I have to make sense of one of the strangest museum experiences I’ve ever had. Starting with some history, this museum was built as part of the controversial 2014 project, which many Macedonians described to me as a nationalist project by a conservative government seeking to put their parties mark on the city after their rejection from NATO due to the naming dispute with Greece. Many reviews describe this place as a Madame Tussaud’s of Macedonian revolutionaries, that is true and lends the place an eerie feeling, as many of the figures are only denoted with very brief plaques that seem to assume the visitor already has a decent knowledge of Macedonian history. The only actual antiques to be found are an extensive and very interesting collection of various guns, weapons, and artillery, along with many historical documents that are often not translated into English. Otherwise, the huge halls covered with massive mythologizing paintings feel reminiscent of a certain Soviet bravado, made more curious by the fact that nearly every painting I could find with a date was created in 2012. Generally the dates of the paintings are not clearly displayed, which feels like a very purposeful emission. I don’t know how to quantify this experience in a number of stars but overall I would say it is a place worth visiting not necessarily for the history but for watching an exercise in a nation-building “antiquisation”. If you’re only here for a couple days, you can skip it.
Erin N — Google review
This is not a museum, but a truly unique experience. The organizer of this place really deserves a huge thank you because they have conveyed the history of Macedonia in a very striking and memorable way. It is one of the must-see places when visiting Skopje.
Çağla G — Google review
Really informative museum about the struggles of the Macedonian people in their fight to establish their country and protect their culture and language. I recommend everyone visiting Macedonia visit this museum to understand this important history. The museum is well set up and easy to follow around. Do give yourself at the least 2 hours.

Matka Canyon Trail is a nature lover's paradise just a short distance from the city center. Accessible by bus or tour, this green oasis boasts mountains and the ancient Matka Lake. Visitors can enjoy walking in nature, breathtaking views, and even take a boat trip for an unforgettable experience. The trail is relatively easy and suitable for all ages, making it perfect for a few hours of peaceful relaxation surrounded by stunning scenery.
It was a great short boat drive in a gorgeous canyon with natural beauties. Unfortunately wife did not preferer the longer trip to the caves but I heard they were great as well. We also walked the trail before the boat trip quite some distance. Definitely suggest to younger group do that but go prepared with food and beverages. BUT CARE ABOUT THE NATURE AND DO NOT LITTER. It is not difficult to bring them back and dump in a bin. The less litter means, other people also allows your foot steps.

A must-see if you’re visiting Skopje. Unfortunately the bus timetables are very reliable and the buses don’t seem to follow it, and taxis will haggle you aggressively while you are walking out or waiting for the bus. When you leave, make sure you walk further out to reach the bus stop. The trail itself is beautiful. It takes you along the water, and you get amazing views of the Canyon. Unfortunately at the end the trail ends abruptly, though opposite the cave you can’t see anything. Nonetheless the views are worth it! Even better if you can rent a kayak or take a boat.
Ethan P — Google review
It’s a must be there place when the temperatures are high. You can either take a boat, pedal boats, kayak or jump and dive from the rocks like all the locals. Make sure you go where the locals go to be safe when jumping into the water. So crystal clean and refreshing artificial lake. It has been built for the Dam that produce free energy for Skopje. By the side to the Dam you could see an opening where the soldiers camp to protected the Dam during the II World War as it has been a target to be destroyed which has never happened. The Cave is such a nice and cold stop with a fresh air, nature shaped walls and lake inside. Many of this cave is still not discovered as some places are very narrow. Very high steps leading to the cave, slippery surface and rails inside due to the nature of this place and some small uneven stones, so make sure you do not fall while admiring the cave. And use a torch 🔦 to see where you going while your eyes get used to the darkness. Not recommended for elderly or unfit people. I nearly made it 😂 (Only shows how unfit I am at the moment). However the boat trip is for everyone who loves being by the water. And after you can enjoy a drink or food at a local restaurant that serve fantastic food.
Angel J — Google review
The Matka Canyon is so beautiful. We went there with a tour (we got the tour from getyourguide website and we left the tour with pleasant memories) the weather unfortunately wasn't sunny but even with this kind of weather, the view was amazing. The boat trip was fun.
Büşra K — Google review
Very enjoyable trail, only 30 minutes by car from Skopje..we chose the st. Nikola trail…quite easy for us, it brings you to a church where you can also do a picnic, then you can continue after the church, going down and rescue a point where a boat will come and pick you up to go on the other part o the lake…to call the boat, you need to ‘ring a bell’ which is actually just a piece of wood and a piece of metal. The ride (just a couple of minutes) was free of charge but we left some money to the driver of course …we loved it there! Very much advised for some hours of hike in the nature
Margherita M — Google review
Great place to visit in Macedonia. You can do a boat tour that brings you to a cave, get inside and visit it. There is also a path to walk around the canyon but I recommend the boat.
Dorian A — Google review
wonderful place for chill-out, picnic, hiking, outdoor activities... didn't walk the entire trail, we went to the Cave with a boat. Yhe cave is astonishing and well preserved (a bit slippery, but worth the trip!)
Zoki G — Google review
One of the natural highlights in North Macedonia. The canyon is beautifully located close to Skopje. It is, however, quite busy and touristical. Don't expect to be alone: come early to have a good parking spot. Don't drive to the furthesr parking spots because the street will get very narrow and difficult to drive because of all pedestrians. There are some restaurants and there are also rental companies for kayaks. You can also walk next to the canyon.

The Archaeological Museum of the Republic of Macedonia is a grand institution showcasing over 7000 archaeological artifacts from ancient Macedonian times. Housed in a newly constructed building with impressive architecture, it features relics uncovered through excavations across Macedonia. Visitors can marvel at Byzantine treasures, 3D reconstructions of early Macedonian faces, and replicas of an early Christian basilica. The museum offers a fascinating journey through history, including Phoenician royal necropolis exhibits.
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Archaeological Museum of the Republic of North Macedonia in Skopje. The museum's extensive collection of over 7,000 artifacts, ranging from the Paleolithic era to the Ottoman period, offered a captivating journey through the region's rich history. We were particularly impressed by the Lapidarium, featuring stone monuments with inscriptions in Greek and Latin, and the well-curated exhibits in the Prehistoric Archaeology and Antiquity departments. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM, with the last tickets sold no later than 5:00 PM. Admission for foreign visitors is 150 Macedonian denars per person (approximately €2.50) . The staff were welcoming and knowledgeable, enhancing our overall experience. We highly recommend this museum to anyone interested in exploring the historical and cultural heritage of North Macedonia.

I was rather surprised that such a big building in a prominent location was so restricted inside. Maybe all the other rooms are for staff and conservation? There were staircases to the second floor (in UK speak) that were roped off, maybe there would have been more up there? I read everything in a museum and it took me 50 minutes. Presentation is in bullet points: object, location, era. If somebody entered not knowing the basics of classical to Byzantine to Ottoman, they would still not know, except rough guesses of the centuries. Very little narration, particularly about everyday life and society. A hard to find basement includes waxworks of historical figures, with labels at their feet or even behind them. This floor was uncanny and I had to check I hadn't just walked into storage. Three stars for the actual quality of the artefacts.

Nice, entry it's 400 dinar. Pretty much expensive for this small museum. Eventing it's clean and nice and well readable. Also Accessible The price in the website absolutely not updated. It seems to have been recently renovated.

Amazing museum with a rich collection of artifacts! Well-organized exhibits, beautiful building, and a perfect location in the heart of Skopje. A must-visit for history lovers and tourists. Highly recommended!

The facade of this museum is one of the most grandiose sights in the city. Built in 2014, the building has an ancient-style architecture, with massive columns and an appearance that truly impresses. It is located on the riverbank, and the Bridge of Civilizations leads directly to its entrance. Even without going inside, the external architecture is imposing and makes for spectacular photos, especially at night when it is fully illuminated and reflects on the water.

From the outside it's bombastic, but once inside houses a lovely set up little museum. The presentation of the displays is really appealing. Also, massive plus: there are some plaques with braille and pictures of the most important pieces with raised edges, so visually impared people can also experience them. I'm guessing the braille is in Macedonian, but still! More accessability than most places!

I want give 5 stars if I think about collections does this museum present ....is absolutely brilliant 💎 and staff in ticket office is friendly and helpful with any problem / But why you have two different prices for tickets to entrance ( 200 mkd for Macedonians and 400mkd for tourists ) .... how is possible take benefits from EU for rebuilds historical sites in Macedonia ( this money is from taxes people who living in EU ) ....but after from this people want more money for ticket / I see this practice in countries out of Europe

Fabulous! So much history over 4 floors. 10-12 centuries of items from glass vases to grave stones, all found in Northern Macedonia. I spent hours here and the wax figure of a lady wearing a glowing dress with shells as buttons I enjoyed the most!

Nestled within the historic walls of a former railway station, the Museum of the City of Skopje is a captivating destination that chronicles the vibrant history and resilience of this remarkable city. This cultural gem not only showcases exhibitions detailing Skopje's evolution from its earliest settlements around 3000 BC to modern times but also serves as a poignant reminder of its tumultuous past, particularly the devastating earthquake in 1963.
This is a cool little museum about the City of Skopje. While at first it appears that it may concentrate largely on the devastating earthquake of 1963, it does delve into the periods BC and AD, before brief texts about the history of Skopje during the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes/Yugoslavia, as well as The Balkan Wars, WWI and II, as well the period of Socialism under Tito. All texts are in Macedonian as well as English, as well as some in Albanian and French. The exhibits are spread across two floors, with the Ancient period on -1, and the modern era on Floor 0. Entrance is completely free. There is a ~14 video (in Macedonian) that shows historical videos from around the time of the earthquake and is worth a watch. The museum will likely take around 2 hours max if reading and viewing all texts and exhibits, and even less if you are just taking a look. The staff are friendly and are there to answer any questions you may have.

Interesting place for a wander. Went to learn about the earthquake, but much more there. A few amazing Neolithic pieces, some traditional costumes frescos copies. A little of everything.

Really liked this museum. Small exhibitions but good for getting in touch with the city. Not overcrowded. Free entrance. Located in the old railway building that was half destroyed by the 1963 earthquake.
Matej S — Google review
The museum definitely feels lackluster, but the admission is free and there's English explanation for most exhibits, which makes up for it. The building itself is a former railway station that was partly destroyed during Skopje's 1963 earthquake. I loved that they left the partly destroyed part as it is, showing the destruction of the earthquake as it is. Which matches with the main theme of the museum, showcasing the history of Skopje before and after the earthquake. The museum also has another section showing some archeological items, but doesn't provide much explanations. Most of the building is still under renovation so only a small part of it is accessible.
Yuhng Y — Google review
There is 9.12 Saturday. Museum should be open but it isn't. None information on site about that. There is only a notice that museum is close at 3 pm, which is also against mormal time schedule and information here.

A free museum dedicated to Skopje’s history. Despite being free, it is far more interesting than the paid museums in the city, with the exception of the one dedicated to Macedonian Independence. A must visit if you are in the city, as the building itself which was damaged during the earthquake and the surrounding area too deserves a visit!

The museum is small and simple, with free entrance. It has a few interesting pieces such as an chessboard and some traditional costumes. You can easily visit it in less than an hour — a nice short stop if you’re exploring the city. 🎨🏛️

Canyon Matka, which means "womb" in Macedonian, is a popular outdoor destination located 15km southwest of central Skopje. It is home to medieval monasteries and the oldest artificial lake in Macedonia, Matka Lake. The nature here is magnificent, with a path offering stunning views. However, visitors should be cautious of scammers and rude people trying to prevent others from enjoying the view.
Amazing experience! If you visually i recommend renting a kayak and being more adventurous 😊 If you visit either pets or kids, you might want to hop on a boat instead.🫶🏼 The hike is easy but still not the safest for kids or people with low stamina. You can still walk a little into the first part to get the nice views for those nice gram posts! 🫶🏼🥰

An amazing place to walk around. There are cheap kayaks there that you can see, but it is more recommended to take a cruise in a large motorboat that is very cheap for half an hour. You can also walk around on foot, but I think it is unnecessary.

Had a chance to see Canyon Matka and Vrelo cave by boat and I highly recommend to not skip a visit when travelling to Skopje. Place itself with a unique flora and fauna offers stunning views. Unfortunately, I have also noticed that the place is quite polluted with litter

Canyon Matka, just outside Skopje, North Macedonia, is a genuinely beautiful spot that left a strong impression. The view from the canyon is stunning, with towering cliffs and lush greenery creating a dramatic and serene landscape. It’s a fantastic place for a relaxing visit, perfect for soaking in the natural beauty. The well-maintained trails and the dam’s walkway make it easy to explore and enjoy the scenery. There are a couple of cafes nearby for a quick coffee, adding to the laid-back vibe. It’s a great escape from the city, and the peaceful atmosphere makes it well worth the trip.
Hristiyan V — Google review
We appreciated the visit a lot, especially since the temperature is very high in the area in summer, the refreshing atmosphere and cold cave was nice to see. 7€ per person if you want to take a boat (with 20 other people), kayak were 200 dinar per person. A lot of cars, we paid 5€ to a restaurant to park our cars in a safe place. I recommend having nice pair of walking shoes and avoiding summer ones, since it is all going uphill. We highly not recommend the restaurant since I’ve heard that it is the only one in the area, « expensive » « not that good », they’re plenty restaurants in Skopje and in its periphery.
Saperlipoete _ — Google review
Matka is a canyon located fifteen kilometers southwest of Skopje. It covers an area of approximately 5,000 hectares and is one of the most popular recreational areas in North Macedonia. Lake Matka, located in the Matka Canyon, is the oldest artificial lake in the country. Ten caves can be found in the Matka Canyon. The most popular, Vrelo Cave, is located on the right bank of the Treska River and can only be reached by boat or kayak. Numerous stalactites can be seen in the cave, including a large stalactite in the center, known for its shape as "The Pinecone." At the end of the cave are two lakes. The smaller one is 8 meters long and 15 meters deep, while the larger one is 35 meters long and 15-18 meters deep. Matka Canyon is also a "reserve" for numerous plant and animal species, including some unique to this region. Near the marina is the Monastery of St. Andrew, but unfortunately, it is closed to visitors. I recommend a kayak or boat trip to the Vrelo Cave. Parking can be difficult on weekends, so it's best to start your trip early in the morning.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Skopje, established in 1964, stands as a symbol of solidarity among artists and art institutions worldwide. Following the 1963 earthquake, a valuable collection featuring works by renowned artists like Picasso and Christo was assembled to aid in the city's reconstruction. The museum's permanent exhibition titled 'Solidarity, an incomplete project?' reflects this history.
Great gallery with an extensive collection of works from the former non-aligned movement countries. When I visited in December 2024 the gallery had heaps of works on both levels. Also affords great views of Skopje. If you're into modern art make sure you visit while in Skopje.

The only problem is, I took the help of Google Maps, I walked through somewhere nowhere, I found nothing, turned back and went around someplace, somehow I find the building. There is no sign of the museum. Inside of it is great, it has such a wonderful view. There are different exhibitions going on at the same time. It was nice.
Feyza K — Google review
Checked online that museum was open. Then it wasn't, but the lady let us in because she acknowledged the website said it was. The ground floor was dedicated to architectural drawings, and the upper floor was being prepared for another exhibition, so the highlight of our visit was a chewed pencil on a white plinth. Go to the national gallery instead, much more to see and in a great building (although sadly smelled strongly of cigarettes throughout).

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Skopje is situated on a hill near the city’s medieval fortress, offering panoramic views of Skopje from all directions—including the east, west, and the south-facing Vodno Mountain. This modernist landmark was built following the 1963 earthquake as part of the city’s architectural revival and stands today as a symbol of Skopje’s modern identity. Designed by prominent architects, the museum features a clean, elegant design, abundant natural light from both its sides and rooftop, and a thoughtful integration with the surrounding landscape. The museum regularly hosts a range of cultural events, from contemporary art exhibitions to musical and community gatherings. Most recently, it was the venue for the charter celebration of the newest Rotary Club in the city—Rotary Club Skopje Kamen Most.

Amazing space from the architectural point of view. Unfortunately not all the floors were open but the exhibition that I managed to see was worth it. Very low price (around 1-2€) for a great museum. The staff is very polite and helpful. Great panorama view of the city.

Interesting architecture with a very quiet atmosphere. Great place to visit with interesting artworks exhibitions and film. Costs about 2 euros to see. The atmosphere is great and you might find yourself sitting down lost in thought. I think it was gifted by the Polish government from what I read. But overall 10/10 and a great place to be when visiting Skopje.

Very strange experience. Google Maps showed it as an abandoned walkway, but when we got there, I had to buy a ticket even though there was basically nothing to see. We even had to ask to be let outside to view the only exhibition/installation they had. Overall, very random — and even the bathrooms didn’t have toilet paper.

Another disappointment on a sunny Saturday - museum closed without any warning online and without any sign in person. Only a guard who opens his window and tells you… what a shame…

The Stone Bridge, a historic 15th-century arched bridge, is an iconic symbol of the capital city. Spanning the Vardar River, it connects the old town and new town and is adorned with traditional craft vendors. At night, colorful lights illuminate the bridge, creating a romantic ambiance. From the bridge, visitors can enjoy stunning views of the river and surrounding mountains. Nearby attractions include the Holocaust Memorial Centre and Museum of Macedonian Struggle for Independence.
The Macedonian Government has done a lot to revitalize the down town into a real show place for the nation. The history that you are presented with thru the statues and the monument is tremendous. One such is the Stone Bridge. We are glad we walked the city and it was easy with finding a flat in the city center. We enjoyed absorbing the culture and the history of this landmark city and culture! The Stone Bridge in Skopje, North Macedonia, is one of the city's most iconic landmarks, spanning the Vardar River and connecting the old bazaar with the modern city center. Built during the 15th century under the rule of Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror, the bridge is believed to rest on Roman foundations, symbolizing the continuity of Skopje’s urban history. Constructed primarily from solid stone blocks, the bridge features 12 semicircular arches and has served as a key crossing point and a stage for significant historical events, including public executions during the Ottoman era. Despite damage from earthquakes and wars, the Stone Bridge has endured and remains a powerful emblem of Skopje’s cultural heritage and resilience.
Kirk B — Google review
The stone bridge on the river Vardar connects Macedonia Square on the right bank and the Old Skopje Bazaar on the left bank of the river. There are two different opinions about its existence. According to the first, it was built in the 6th century, shortly after the catastrophic earthquake in 518, during the reign of Emperor Justinian I. Others believe that the bridge was built in the second half of the fifteenth century, between 1451 and 1469, the time when the Ottoman empire was ruled by the Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror. The bridge is built of travertine stone blocks bound with iron hooks and fastened with cast lead and crushed stone and mortar. In its original appearance it contained 13 semicircular arches, it had a length of 213.85 m (329 steps) and a width of 6.33 m. Today, the bridge is accessible only for pedestrians, but historically it was also used for traffic. It was named "Stone Bridge" because it was built using crushed stone. In addition, the bridge is historically also known as the Dushan Bridge, in honor of the Serbian king Dusan. Stone Bridge is considered a symbol of the city of Skopje. Stone Bridge is presented as an integral element on the coat of arms of the city. Alhamdulillah for the opportunity to have arrived here.
Rahmah R — Google review
The Stone Bridge in Skopje, often hailed as the city’s iconic landmark, is a disappointing and frustrating experience that fails to live up to its historical significance. Spanning the Vardar River and connecting Macedonia Square to the Old Bazaar, this 15th-century Ottoman structure is undeniably striking with its 13 arches and solid stonework. However, any appreciation for its architecture is quickly overshadowed by the appalling conditions surrounding it. The bridge is plagued by an overwhelming number of insects, to the point where crossing feels like a battle. Visitors practically need to cover their faces entirely to avoid being swarmed, making what should be a leisurely stroll a deeply uncomfortable ordeal. The sheer volume of bugs is not only irritating but also raises questions about the lack of basic maintenance or pest control in such a central location. Worse still is the aggressive begging that dominates the experience. Groups of individuals, often described as gypsies, don’t just ask for money—they practically extort it, creating an intimidating atmosphere that makes crossing the bridge feel unsafe and stressful. Their persistence is relentless, and it’s shocking that such behavior is allowed to persist in Skopje’s most prominent public space. The apparent absence of police or municipal intervention is nothing short of absurd, reflecting a broader neglect of public order in the city. It’s as if the authorities have completely abandoned any effort to maintain a welcoming environment for visitors and locals alike. While the bridge’s historical and architectural value could make it a highlight of Skopje, the reality is a chaotic mess. The combination of swarming insects and aggressive begging, coupled with the authorities’ inaction, turns this landmark into a frustrating symbol of the city’s dysfunction. Visiting the Stone Bridge feels like navigating a gauntlet rather than enjoying a historic site.
Hristiyan V — Google review
This bridge is the city's most iconic symbol, connecting Macedonia Square to the Old Bazaar over the river. Its original construction dates back to the 15th century, during the time of Sultan Mehmed II. With its 13 stone arches, it has withstood wars and natural disasters. It is a pedestrian-only thoroughfare and offers fantastic views of the new buildings and other bridges along the river. It's impossible to visit the city and not cross it several times.

There were 3, 300 Jewish Northern Macedonians before the second world war. Afterward there were 300, most being sent to Treblinka and murdered. This Holocaust museum provides videos and documentary about the experience. Nestled in the heart of Skopje, City Park, also known as Gradski Park, stands out as a lush oasis amidst the city's urban chaos. Spanning approximately 500,000m2, it has been an integral part of the city for over a century. Bordered by prominent streets and the Vardar River, this expansive green space provides serene strolls, picturesque gardens, and various children's activities such as the Skopje Zoo.
Very relaxing park, with some lakes and rivers all over the place. Easy reachable from the city center. And even in addition to walk passed the riverside. Also a quick visit to the stadium.

A fairly nice park that runs along the Vardar river. There’s soccer and tennis courts. Some cafes, mobile coffee, smoothies and juice spots throughout the park. There’s a pond, some exercise equipment and closed off areas for dogs. Much cleaner air than in the city due to all the trees and location. It’s fairly large, plenty of places to hang out. In the main area they often have events, especially for children.

The city park is located behind the zoo. The large park has many channels of water with waterfowl and turtles. There are many bridges, benches, shelters and drinking fountains. Children can play on the playgrounds and there is a workout ground. Great park for walking, jogging, biking or just enjoying the scenery.

Although I don't have pictures, I can say this place is quite amazing. Seeing children riding bikes alone, seeing youths playing tennis, and enjoying solitude and quietness is a green flag park. The trees, the food cars, and the green of the park, makes it a great place to visit in a weekend or just for fun.

Iskra R — Google review
Nice place for a walk and relaxation in Skopje. 80% of the park is in the shade, because there are many trees and greenery. During hot weekends there are always crowds. If you visit on a weekday when there are fewer people, you can also see squirrels around the trees. There are plenty of benches to sit on, but when it's the weekend, it's hard to find a free bench. The park is beautiful in every season. There are running tracks, a dog park, props for children, and there are also summer discos. There are many stands for coffee, donuts, popcorn and other things. The downside of the park is that the trash cans fill up quickly and trash is not picked up quickly. More trash cans should be installed or cleaned more often. There is a free parking lot near the park, which is the site of the former car range, on the other side of the Vardar River.
Spase M — Google review
It's nice, there's a playground for kids, some sculptures, green maze, dog run, small pool with ducks and turtles, trucks with coffee or/and fresh juice - even tennis courts and carousel... the park is divided in 2 parts - one is more "wild", it's more green and has water channels with cute bridges over them. But there's also less people and no trucks with drinks. There is only one thing I don't like in here - garbage everywhere... but if you don't mind it, just grab a blanket, get a book and a smoothie and find yourself some nice spot in there.

The National Gallery of the Republic of North Macedonia Daut Pasha Hammam is a unique cultural institution located in Skopje. Housed within a historic 15th-century Turkish bathhouse, the gallery offers an unexpected setting for its diverse collection of modern and traditional art. The building itself, with its original features like domed roofs and intricate architecture, adds to the atmospheric experience.
Definitely a must see while in Skopje. The entrance fee was nominal like $2, and the art was very nice. A plus is the beauty of the building as this was previously a Turkish bath house. The inside reflects the beauty of this history.

I recently visited the museum, but unfortunately, my experience was unpleasant due to the behavior of one of the staff members at the entrance. When I arrived, he told me that visiting hours were almost over and refused to let me in. What disturbed me most was that he kept touching me while speaking, even though I clearly asked him not to. His tone was rude and aggressive, which made me feel disrespected and unsafe. I truly hope the museum management takes this matter seriously to ensure a safe and respectful environment for all visitors.

Again, with tempered expectations, you should get your 100 MKD worth of interesting art pieces in a rather well organized and interestingly renovated old Ottoman building. Neither the place nor the art pieces are mind blowing, but it is very well air conditioned and cheap to enter. Reason on its own to visit it!
Mustafa K — Google review
I know art is subjective but I guess I didn’t enjoy the current installation at the gallery. The gallery is small, hot, smells funky and I think is being renovated. Took me only 5-10 minutes to walk through and read all the info. Maybe I’m here at the wrong time but I don’t understand the hype. Couldn’t really appreciate how it’s a renovated hammam either, it just looks like they’ve put white plaster over everything. I think I felt really intrigued of part of the installations with the crocodiles but felt the meaning didn’t really click with me once I read the information. The artist has skill for sure but just felt the gallery atmosphere and flow of the rooms was a let down.

For 100 MKD, you can spend about an hour enjoying the paintings, murals, and sculptures created by many Macedonian artists.. The inside is well cared for and clean as well.

The building of the Daut Pasha Hamam, which is part of the National Gallery of Macedonia, is the most interesting part of the visit. It's well worth discovering. There are parts that compare how the ceiling used to be to what it has become. The architect in charge of renovating this building did a great job. If only the exhibits were half as interesting as the renovation. I hope that the exhibited collection will improve with time.

100% recommend. Great conversion of an ancient hammam into a museum for (modern) Macedonian art. Some really good art pieces.

The Skopje Aqueduct is a remarkable ancient structure located in the village of Vizbegovo, just 2 kilometers northwest of Skopje. It is one of the largest and best-preserved aqueducts in Macedonia, with scenic arches that are believed to date back to Roman times. The exact age of the aqueduct remains uncertain, as it could have been constructed during the Roman Empire, Byzantine Empire, or Ottoman Empire.
Really awesome experience for the more adventurous traveler. Not a typical tourist attraction. There was no one in sight. The aqueducts stand alone in a field and cross a river. Most tourists would probably find the site boring, but it's a unique local experience. Getting there requires either walking, driving, or taking a taxi. Most travelers would find the walk uncomfortable, both in distance and from a security perspective, as you are eventually isolated. I would not recommend doing it alone for most people. You pass through a very small neighborhood and reach the site. Unfortunately, there is litter everywhere. However, litter is a bit of a cultural trend here, so it's not particularly surprising. The site is unmanaged and unkept. This is not a tourist attraction, but it is an historic relic and an experience of its own. If this is your sort of thing, as it is mine, you'll love it!

Interesting aquaduct of which you unfortunately won’t hear from almost anyone. The place is falling apart and is surrounded by trash and waste. You can drive up to it with a car, saddest part is that they don’t value this unique construction and don’t really know if it was built during Roman, Byzantine or Ottoman era. Worth the visit to this hidden gem, hopefully the city will wake up and try to preserve and protect it so it’s not covered by graffiti and human waste
Viktor S — Google review
It is an amazing piece of Roman architecture that still stands the test of time and nature. It is located in the middle of a landfill, and the flies can get annoying. If you are coming from the city center, you have to take two buses and then walk in the middle of the landfill to get there. If you like ancient and Roman ruins, it is definitely worth seeing.
Jason P — Google review
It’s a quite deserted & neglected, but a great piece of architecture. The Aqueduct is sturdy & strong & quite long, it’s said to be from the Roman era, parts of it is under maintenance. To get there by public bus, take #9 or #19 from the centre, get off near to the Point Retail park shopping centre, then walk 25 minutes, partly on dirt road.
Connie W — Google review
I was surprised by how majestic and stable it was. The whole building seems more like in bizantine style, which make it even more unique. Besides fantastic views the area around it is a literal garbage dump for locals. It stinks out there.
Kamil — Google review
A beautiful historic monument and a great spot to escape the city’s smog and chaos. Sadly, as in most developing countries, the charm quickly fades once you notice the beer bottles, plastic bags, and random rubbish scattered everywhere. It’s almost impressive how people manage to litter in the most scenic places. Indian and Bangladeshi tourists will probably feel right at home — a true touch of authenticity!
Ki N — Google review
This would be a great place to visit but it is horribly neglected. There are heaps of garbage. There are some shacks built leaning into the aqueduct. Not only does it not look nice, it doesn't feel safe either. The road there is also in a very poor state. It's unpaved and very narrow. Such a shame.
Jordan P — Google review
Very fascinating! Part of it has been reconstructed, but most is untouched. It's nice to see how it used to be and what is left. It's a short drive from the center and even our taxi driver had never visited it but if you like this sort of things, I completely recommend.

Nature & Parks
Woman-Warrior Park is a small but richly adorned green space featuring numerous statues, including a striking woman warrior figure. The park offers a peaceful retreat from bustling city tours, with ample shaded areas, benches, and refreshing fountains. While the name may suggest otherwise, the park showcases various carved figures of male soldiers, writers, politicians, and revolutionaries.
One of my favorite parks located downtown. There is so much history condensed in this little land told by all the statues in it. There is the memorial of the army and pilots that lost their life’s in the war of 2001. One dedicated to all the women and children vanished from their homes in the Aegean Macedonia, today’s Northern Territory of Greece, one of the many genocides done to the Macedonian people. One dedicated to the formation of the first party that rose against the Ottoman Empire on these lands. Individual statues of the president of the small 10 days existence of a Republic formed during the wars against the Ottomans and the young warrior that knew he didn’t have the enough men in his army but still went into battle and died a hero (asked the last 6 men in his army to all kill each other so they don’t die by the enemy’s hand and they did knowing they lost the battle). One of the first meetings of the newly formed government of the freed Macedonian territory. I don’t know what the deal is with the Greek methodology God statue is but it’s there and it looks nice. This park is between the City Trade Center and the Government Building, close to the city hospital and the city fresh market with the public square on the other side of the park which you can also access through the Triumph Gate. It is beautifully green in spring and summer and while it is in the middle of a busy area, it is perfectly peaceful.

my favourite park in the great city of skopje. I mean these benches (shown in photo)… say less 😏 perfect for a cheeky afternoon nap or to just lie down and contemplate the world and our existence in this harsh capitalist society which values our output over ourselves

Nice park with some fascinating statues and monuments, including the first statue I’ve ever seen of a whole group of people at a table.

A beautiful small park filled with statues and history. The park pays tribute to the role of women across the rich history of Macedonia. The Woman Warrior Park (Gradski Park) in Skopje, North Macedonia, is a small public park that holds historical and cultural significance. The park is home to a notable monument, known as the “Monument to the Woman Fighter” (Споменик на жената борец), which commemorates the role of women in the anti-fascist struggle during World War II.
Cristian G — Google review
Pretty brilliant park with intriguing and exciting architecture. When i see an innovative bench it does add to my enjoyment of a park, and this one had this great one, perfect for lying down. One downside… lots of statues of men… idk what that was about
Pia B — Google review
Small but beautiful park in Skopje dedicated to woman fighters in spite of the many statues of men in the same area. The City of Skopje has many statues throughout and these are impressive as well. We walked through the park on our walking tour of the city. Great use of our short stay in Skopje.
Jamie W — Google review
In fact, very little space to sit on a bench or a blanket on the grass, most of the space is taken up by monuments. I know what they are for but nevertheless there are too many of them. On a hot day you can breathe in the shade of the trees.
Deux M — Google review
A statue per person... It's kind of weird but that's the one of the whole thing of Skopje, but this park especially, my god so many statues. There is a mixture of odd-looking Yugoslav style (which is definitely cooler) and modern style. Downside is those ugly graffiti. Yeah, people do it everywhere but that's the responsibility of the municipality: protect the art and take care of it.

Museums
The Museum of Macedonia, located in the Old Bazaar, is a national institution showcasing the archaeological, ethnological, and historical heritage of Macedonia. Housed in a newly built complex, it offers diverse exhibitions from anthropology, archaeology, ethnology, history of arts, and conservation departments. With approximately 66,000 items on display spanning from the Neolithic Age to the Byzantine and Turkish Periods, visitors can explore the rich and diverse history of Macedonia.
The museum is from a different era and the building has been indifferently maintained over the years - it’s a glorious throwback to Yugoslav days. The Ethnographic section is the best with a good array of bridal garments. A good proportion of the exhibits have English explanations. Staff were great. Don’t put it top of your list in Skopje, but if you’ve a spare hour, this is worth experiencing.

Extremely small, basically 1 room that brings some information about Macedonian/Greek of the mid 1920s till today. Few information. The museum building is mainly empty and partly run down. But: no entrance fee (at least with my visit there)

Go near the statue entrance bc it's the most detailed of the 3 parts on Macedonian culture related to clothing, housing and farming. It is so beautiful and I had the whole place to myself! I spent a lot of time looking at all the colours and embroidery. It needs some love and money so please go and support this amazing part of Macedonian culture. ❤️🙏😊

Hard to find the entrance. Air conditioning was not on and made it very hot inside. One building was nice. But the other was poorly lit and smells bad. Great look at the history of the country. Just wish the building were better taken care of.

Adriaan V — Google review
The museum is situated in an interesting building, which seems to be left a bit abandoned. The exhibition is split into 2 parts... both of which are in different halls within the same complex. The first part is a nice displayed related to the history of Macedonia; but too much reading looses interest.... The second half of the exhibition is a large collection of cultural related artefacts. Unfortunately this is displayed in a very old fashioned style with small captions. The place has potential but needs investment. Overall it was interesting to understand Macedonian culture & history. I would recommend to visit this place while wondering around the old bazaar.

We booked very easily with e-mail, very responsive. The place is conveniently located near Skopje, important winery. The location has multiple attractions for staying and spending time. We had a short tour with explanations on wine making process. Then we had the actual tasting of 5 wines, according to what we chose. The wines were good and nice presentation. We felt hurried to move on wine by wine on the tasting part which was the single negative point, everything took 45 minutes, but overall a good experience. Price was somewhere mid, depending on wine selection, but no appetizers included. By the way, some neutralizer is required, maybe bread only or crackers.

We actually drove up here to try to book a wine tasting and see the estate. The only thing they offer is that you’re allowed to eat at their restaurant and pay full price for wine by the glass — that’s the way you can taste their wine before buying bottles. Strange. But the food was good, and the service was fine. Still, it’s odd that when you want to buy wine for a larger amount, you have to go through that process. In the end, we bought much less than we had planned, since it was an impossible way to taste their wine. But again, not at all the experience we thought we could have. The website is down, and it really feels like the place doesn’t really care for tourists coming to buy their wine.

Wonderful hosts, we had 7 course wine pairing dinner which lasted for 5 hours. It was a pure pleasure. The staff is excellent, presentation amazing and food superb. We had the honour of tasting some magnums and double magnums of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon from 2007. Wines are amazingly crafted, long lasting and represent terroir in best way. I highly recommend visiting this place

The Cube escape room Dexter, Evil mansion in Skopje offers a thrilling indoor activity for friends and couples. The rooms are intricately detailed with challenging puzzles to solve. The staff is friendly and provides drinks, creating a fun atmosphere. While the Evil Mansion lacks a clear sequence for unlocking the door, it still offers an exciting experience. Additionally, there's an outdoor area for parkour enthusiasts.
The escape games 'Evil Mansion' and 'Dexter' at The Cube are super fun with friends. The staff is nice and gives you drinks. Plus, they've got an outdoor area where you can do some parkour. I'd totally recommend The Cube, just like their other locations. It's a great time for sure!

Fountain Olympia - Mother of Alexander III of Macedonia is a beautiful fountain located in the northeast side of Karpos's Rebellion Square. It features a set of sculptures representing the Mothers of Macedonia, with Olympias, mother of Alexander the Great and wife of Philip II, being one of them. The fountain is surrounded by these statues and is a great spot for taking photos.
Amazing fountain with a lot of sculptures on it just right beside the Old Bazaar. The sculptures on it are very beautiful and detailed. However, it seems like the fountain wasn't regularly maintained, with visible stains on the statue and the bricks, and graffiti on its signages.

The Fountain Olympia, also known as the Fountain of the mothers of Macedonia, is a prominent landmark in Skopje, located nearby the Old Stone Bridge. The fountain features sculptures representing various stages of motherhood, including a status of Olympias, the mother of Alexander the Great. Statues of women with children surrounds the fountain, symbolising the nurturing aspects of motherhood. The fountain’s Designs include floral motifs and sculptures of the Macedonian phalanx army, horses and lions, reflecting Macedonia’s rich history. The Fountain Olympia serves as a tribute to the mothers of Macedonia, and is a popular spot for both locals and tourists. Good experience to be here.
Rahmah R — Google review
Amazing storytelling and such an interesting story behind this statue and the conflict between Macedonia and Greece. After some reading I learned the following on Alexander’s mother: The “Fountain Olympia – Mother of Alexander III of Macedonia” refers to a historical figure, Olympias, rather than a specific fountain. Olympias was the mother of Alexander the Great, also known as Alexander III of Macedonia. Her life and role in history are significant, particularly due to her influence in Alexander’s rise to power and the shaping of his ambitions

BANG! Another fantastic fountain located in the centre of Macedonia’s capital city. That’s one thing that’s guaranteed in this wonderful city, a beautiful fountain. What I like about fountains, other than the sound of running water, the beautiful architecture and often the historical symbols it’s built for, is what they represent. Running water is symbolic in many cultures for renewal and cleansing and when I see a fountain, personally, I like to take that time to reflect on what do I need to let go of. What baggage am I holding? (Emotional and physical… 10kg travel limit means culling is often a necessity). Anyway if you visit this fountain maybe adopt that kind of thinking and see what journey it takes you on. Only if you want to of course! No pressure!

St. Panteleimon is a historic church in Macedonia, dating back to 1164 and renowned for its vibrant medieval frescoes. Nearby, the Imaret stands on the foundations of the 9th-century monastery associated with St. Clement, who opened the first Slavic school and translated Scriptures. The region boasts beautiful churches, historic monuments, and a medieval castle atop the city. Notable attractions include St. Sophia Church, St.
A small Byzantine church dedicated to St. Panteleimon, located in the surroundings of Mount Vodno. I joined a group tour to visit here, but I heard taxi prices should be around 5€ to 7€ to visit. The church is known for its religious frescoes that indicated the development of the Renaissance in the 12th century. The church grounds are quiet and relaxing, while also providing a beautiful, unobstructed view of Skopje. It is best to experience this church with a guide, there's so much history in each little detail of the church. It's mesmerizing how well preserved the original frescoes from the century are, considering the church had been through an earthquake.

Quiet and peaceful monastery. It's a bit of a drive from the center through narrow and winding roads but worth it. There's parking right outside the monastery. Gates were closed (arrived around 4pm, used the black gate near the parking) but not locked, and so were the church doors. You may have the place to yourself. No entrance fees. Good views of the city from here

Small church outside Skopje. Entry fee is 120 MD, because it doubles as a small museum. The frescos inside are incredibly beautiful. I was lucky to have a passionate guide who took plenty time to explain the images. It's hard to believe some fresco are 800+ years old, with how stunning the colours still are.

Skopje Zoo, situated in Skopje, North Macedonia, is a well-known 12-hectare attraction that has been around since 1926. Initially facing concerns about its animal exhibits, the zoo has undergone significant improvements to meet EAZA standards and is now a candidate for membership. Home to various animal species like lions, tigers, elephants, birds, and reptiles, the zoo also features an educational center and a play area.
The price of ticket is very cheap and the space is lager than expect. There are many kinds of animals consider the size and price. There are elephant, bears, Lions, bison, zebra and various monkeys. There is no giraffe anymore. It needs to be maintained. But still good for kids! But if you are traveler without child not like us, you don’t need to visit here.

This was an excellent visit from start to finish, and a highlight of our visit to Macedonia. We were greeted at the door by Filip, who welcomed us inside and led us through the main hall to where the tour (guided by Jordan) would start. Jordan has an extremely detailed yet approachable way of explaining the winemaking process. Even though we have a good foundation in our wine knowledge, we both felt that we learnt a lot during this tour. The setup was incredibly intimate - we were one of two couples touring the winery that day, and we were able to ask all the questions we wanted both during the tour and tasting. After touring the premises and learning about the Kartal(ov) winemaking approach, we were led upstairs to a cosy tasting room where a charcuterie board (including great local cheeses) had been prepared for us. This part of the visit lasted around two hours; there was no pressure to rush through the wines - everything was explained to us thoroughly, and we were able to take the time to appreciate both the food and wine. The wines themselves were of a very, very high quality and possibly the best first exposure we could have had to Macedonian wine. We especially liked the Temjanika, Stanušina and Vranec. Jordan and Filip take a great deal of care in every aspect of the experience - making sure that everyone feels at home and attended to. We loved chatting with Jordan not only about the wines we were tasting, but about winemaking in general and life in Macedonia. We will definitely be back.

Booked a tour & tasting for 2 through their website. Quick response via WhatsApp confirming the date, time, and cost. We arrived a bit early but Jordon graciously welcomed us and started the tour, explaining the history of the winery, the process of making their wines, the grape varieties, and so much more. He and his brother Fillip’s passion are present in every bottle we tasted. It was a wonderful experience, which was evident in how fast 2 hours went by 🙂

There was quite a trip from the city centre but it was oh so worth it. We were greeted by the pair of brothers who started the winery. Both of them gave a wonderful impression. I believe the trip around the place was a very interesting and educating experience and I got to hear all about the process of making their wine. The time of tasting the wine came and it did not disappoint! I got to try one of their rosè wines, 2 of their white wines as well as 3 of their red wines. As a not so experienced wine drinker this was the place to open my eyes to the possibilities that the world of wine has to offer!

He gave an amazing tour through the wine processing facility and explained all the steps in detail. We learned so much from the experience. The wine tasting afterwards was just as good, if not better. Not only were the wines delicious, but Jordan explained each wine in terms of flavour and pairings, also in relation the the available charcuterie and cheeses (which were superb). I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Must visit if you are in Skopje!

The Macedonian Opera and Ballet is a stunning architectural marvel that draws inspiration from Finnish organic design, seamlessly blending with the natural landscape of mountains and topography. Spanning an impressive 172,200 square feet, this venue features two theaters, including a larger one designed for optimal viewing experiences with its unique sky-blue seating arrangement. The exterior showcases dramatic geometric planes that slope towards the Vardar River, creating a striking visual impact as visitors approach via descending stairs that reflect intricate fractal patterns.
We attended a performance at this wonderfully comfortable opera house on the recommendation of our free walking tour guide. (Alexandra). We loved the modern feel of the interior, we also loved the layout of the seating, doesn't matter where you sit, you seem to get a good view, the seats were so comfortable. the whole lovely vibe of the place, just added to the experience of the excellent performance of cavilieri rusticana.

It was a great privilege to attend yesterday's stunningly beautiful Italian-Macedonian co-production of "Rigoletto"! Brilliant set design and direction, the magnificent Leon Kim, a perfect rendition of the classics, note for note, moment for moment. A true feast for the senses! (P.S.: And the concert hall is new modern and comfortable!)

I have always had amazing experiences and great entertainment at the Macedonian Opera and Ballet. While it is not the biggest theater or the fanciest, it resembles a cinema hall on the inside, but it's comfortable.

The Macedonian Opera and Ballet brings the most popular ballets and operas during the year. Buying tickets online is possible if you want to secure your tickets on time. The programme is inspiring and varied, presenting famous classics like "Swan Lake", "Nutcracker", "Aida", "Carmen", etc., and includes new and contemporary works through the year. The Gala Ballet and May Opera Nights are splendid.
Stoјan N — Google review
Quite an interesting shape of the structure inside with a lot of corners, creating a sharp feeling. The seats on the gallery are tilting - which I found great and contemporary. The whole building needs love, from the outside to inside, quite dirty outside and a humidity problem at places inside. My partner said Norma was fantastic, I couldn't watch the whole thing and went outside 📛🤩😂
Manos F — Google review
After looking forward to the performance of Nabucco this evening, we ended up leaving after the first Act. This was nothing whatsoever to do with the performance. It was all down to a very poorly run opera venue where many members of the audience were allowed to get out their mobile phones during the performance, showing absolutely no manners or consideration. I have been to many Operas across Europe and there is always an expected etiquette that is followed of no mobile phones during a performance. Not here. Usually there is an announcement to turn mobile phones off but there wasn't one made at this venue. We complained to the management and asked for our money back but they declined. They said they usually make a mobile phone announcement but that members of the audience ignore it. I have never seen that before at an opera and it's the responsibility of the opera venue to make sure the audience have a good experience without inconsiderate people ruining it for others as was the case here.

The Murat Paša mosque in Turkey is highly recommended for its welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. It is a peaceful place located in the Old Bazaar, offering a serene and cool environment. The mosque's non-Muslim friendly approach is evident as visitors are warmly welcomed inside, where friendly people greet them with smiles. They are also encouraged to stay and assist during the evening prayer. Additionally, the presence of a fountain in front adds to the beauty of this remarkable mosque.
Comfortable place to do praying in the heart of the old town of Skopje.
Habib — Google review
The Murat-Pasha Mosque is located in the very center of the Old Bazaar in Skopje. According to the inscription on the marble plaque above the entrance door in the Murat-Pasha mosque, it is explained in Arabic that it was built around 1802 and 1803, after its original structure was burnt in a fire in 1689. There is a drinkable water fountain in front of the mosque, that adds to the beauty of this remarkable mosque. We didn’t enter the mosque since it was not prayer time yet, but we were fascinated by its simple yet beautiful exterior. Also being located right in the centre of the Old Bazaar of Skopje, it serves as a continuous prayer house for the locals and tourists. Good experience to be here.

The Square Macedonia is a public square in the city of Skopje, capital of Macedonia. It is one of the most popular meeting points for its citizens and has been designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The square's design features a series of waterfalls that flow into a large basin, creating an idyllic setting for gatherings and events.
Macedonia Square is the main square of the capital city of Macedonia, Skopje. It is located at the heart of the city and it is the biggest one in the country. What makes this place so special and different from all other is its beautiful architecture and design. There are many statues and monuments situated all over the square so you can get more familiar with the rich history of Macedonia. The most noticeable item here is the outstanding fountain above which the statue of the ancient warrior king Alexander the Great is placed. The popular Macedonia Square is an ideal place for spending excellent time with family or friends as there are many cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy the splendid taste of traditional Macedonian food. Also, the square is situated near many stores so you can have unforgettable shopping experience as well. It was slightly raining when we arrived here, however we still had a great time, taking photos and enjoying the fresh air. Grateful to have arrived here.
Rahmah R — Google review
I would expect a dimmer environment in the evening. He would show the colored lights more vividly. In order for the ambience to be romantic, it is necessary to reduce large sports lights. Looking at their old photos, they did a good job. A beautiful country that deserves more tourism. I also recommend you to visit the museum.
Nazmi D — Google review
This is the main square and the true heart of the city. It’s huge and full of life, surrounded by cafés and restaurants. The focal point is, without a doubt, the massive “Warrior on a Horse” statue, which everyone recognizes as Alexander the Great. The scale is impressive, with the bronze statue standing on top of a very tall pedestal. The square connects several major landmarks, including the famous Stone Bridge that leads to the Old Bazaar. It’s the perfect place to start exploring and feel the city’s energy.
Luana B — Google review
As a tourist I can say that you can expect spectacular views there. It's exceptional. As a historian I must point your attention to the whole Skopje 2014 project, that turned out to be just one big corruption opportunity for politicians. Just devastating how much money was wasted.
Kamil — Google review
⭐ 5/5 — Beautiful architecture and great atmosphere Visited on 25 October 2025 with my fiancée. We stayed around an hour taking photos because the square is truly beautiful — a perfect mix of classic architecture, statues, and a stunning water fountain show with lights that create a great atmosphere for pictures and relaxing for a bit. You can also take a short walk around the square to see different spots and enjoy the vibe. The area was a little crowded, but expected since it’s the center of the city. Very clean and well-maintained. You can reach the square easily by car or bus, but the inside is blocked for vehicles so you must continue on foot — which adds to the charm. One thing to be careful about: if you’re staying inside the square and need to bring your car in, make sure you only talk to the official guard. Someone tried to scam us by pretending to charge money to enter, but our apartment host confirmed there’s no fee and the real guard let us through safely. Overall, a must-visit spot in Skopje — especially for photos, architecture lovers, and anyone wanting to feel the heart of the city. ✅ Highly recommended.

Macedonia Square is the main square of Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia. It is located in the central part of the city, and crosses the Vardar River. The square has several structures, the most prominent is the statue of Alexander the Great. Many structures in the square are relatively new, but the stone bridge connecting the new and old city is from 15th century. There is a nice walking path along the river and many souvenir stores in the Old part of the city. We visited in the morning, so the square was almost empty. Unfortunately the area is not maintained well, some part is quite dirty but it's worth visiting.

Memorial
The Monument to Alexander III of Macedonia, located in the city center of Skopje, is part of the Skopje 2014 project initiated by the government. This ambitious plan aims to revitalize the area with various interventions and new buildings, including a triumphal arch, fountains, memorials, churches, museums, and sculptures. The centerpiece of this project is a 22-meter-high monument of Alexander the Great surrounded by over 50 other sculptures within a 1.
Tremendous statue in the city center honoring Alexander the Great! The "Warrior on a Horse" statue in Skopje, North Macedonia, was unveiled in 2011 as part of the government-funded “Skopje 2014” project, aimed at reshaping the city’s identity through grand neoclassical architecture and monuments. Though officially unnamed, the statue clearly represents Alexander the Great, a highly contentious figure in Balkan history. Standing 22 meters tall including its pedestal, the bronze monument dominates Macedonia Square and symbolizes national pride. Its erection sparked controversy both domestically and internationally, particularly with Greece, due to the ongoing dispute over historical and cultural claims to Alexander’s legacy. The statue has become a central landmark in Skopje, blending nationalist symbolism with modern political narratives.
Kirk B — Google review
The center of Skopje is truly impressive! It's filled with massive and striking monuments, especially the one dedicated to Alexander the Great, which dominates the main square. Fountains, statues, and wide boulevards surround you – it feels like walking through an open-air museum. The city has a unique vibe, blending old and new. A perfect place for a stroll, photos, and soaking in the atmosphere.
Nena — Google review
The Warrior on a Horse monument in Skopje was an absolutely stunning sight and one of the most impressive landmarks I visited. Standing tall in the center of Macedonia Square, the sheer size and detail of the statue immediately caught my attention and left me in awe. Surrounded by fountains and lively atmosphere, it created a grand and unforgettable setting. I loved walking around the square, taking in the monument from different angles, especially as the water features and lights added even more beauty to the scene. The statue perfectly captured the spirit and history of Skopje, making it both powerful and inspiring. Visiting the Warrior on a Horse monument was a highlight of my trip and a memory I’ll always cherish.
Mohsin R — Google review
The "Warrior on a Horse" sculpture in Skopje, North Macedonia, is a grandiose and misguided attempt at historical glorification that borders on the absurd. This oversized bronze statue, implicitly tied to Alexander the Great despite his complete lack of connection to modern Macedonian identity, stands as a glaring symbol of historical revisionism. To make matters even more laughable, it’s positioned with a statue of the Bulgarian Tsar Samuel looming in the background, creating a bizarre juxtaposition that only amplifies the historical inaccuracies and nationalist overreach. Artistically, the sculpture is a bloated spectacle. The warrior, perched atop a rearing horse, is rendered with technical precision, but the exaggerated scale—over 14 meters tall—feels more like a caricature than a tribute. The intricate details of the armor and horse’s form are overshadowed by the sheer pomposity of the design, which seems desperate to impress rather than inspire. The historical context is where this monument truly falters. Alexander the Great, a figure of the ancient Kingdom of Macedon, has no meaningful link to the modern Macedonian nation, making the statue’s implied association feel like a deliberate misstep. The presence of Tsar Samuel’s statue nearby, a figure tied to Bulgarian history, only deepens the absurdity, as it muddles competing national narratives in a way that feels almost comedic. This pairing underscores the "Skopje 2014" project’s tendency to cherry-pick historical figures for political gain, ignoring both historical accuracy and regional sensitivities. In short, the "Warrior on a Horse" is a visually overblown and historically incoherent monument that fails to resonate beyond its nationalist agenda. The addition of Tsar Samuel’s statue in the background only makes the scene more ludicrous, turning a potentially dignified square into a confusing historical mash-up. Rating: 2/5 – A technically competent but laughably misguided attempt at grandeur, better suited as a case study in political overreach than a work of art.

This statute is huge! I can see it from my hotel a kilometre away. Very speculator! The fountain with its constant changing of pressure and flow became a water show. There is a little train 🚂 you can take for a ride on or sit in one of the many cafes and restaurants to watch everyone and everything.

The park is fun but the stuff is very rude and demotivating with children. They were talking about age limit, but the rules did not apply equally to all children. There are children who are tall and active, and younger, who were not allowed to pass all levels. The staff needs to work on their relationship with children.
Kijara C — Google review
I had a great experience. Very fun and appropriate for kids and adults. I liked the zip line. I went on the first and second floor adventures. The first one was easier, but extremely fun. I think kids from 7,8 years and up can manage the round. The second floor was more difficult, and you need to be in a good physical shape to finish it. I didn't go to the third floor, because the second floor drained all of my energy. So I will try it the next time I go there, it looks as it'll be the most challenging one. So overall it was a great experience, especially if you and your kids are outdoorsy type of people that like challenges and want to skip and jump and live a little on the edge 😁

Came to a birthday party. Serving staff was great. The play area has some spots that need improving/updating and some toys that need to be fixed or thrown away. Employees were nice, but I believe should be a little more attentive to the smaller kids in the play area when there’s a wider age difference. Bathroom is adorable! Made for the little kids. Plenty of lockers for items to be stashed away. Cute area for kids to sit at, although of course they’d much rather play.
