Grái kötturinn, also known as The Grey Cat, is a charming semi-basement café nestled on the serene Hverfisgata. This bohemian spot is renowned for its diverse breakfast offerings, with the Truck being its star attraction. This American-style combo features pancakes, toast, bacon, eggs, and fried potatoes. The café takes pride in crafting their own bread and whipping up delectable treats like pancakes, tuna salad, and hummus from scratch.
This place is awesome!! Cozy space with bookshelves, good art and funky music, not to mention the delicious breakfast. My husband says the best hot chocolate ever. So glad we found this place!

Cozy place with nice options for breakfast/brunch. There are only a few seats so you might need to wait. Personally I didn't like the coffee but my wife did. Not the cheapest place but okay for Iceland. Worth trying (Cuban sandwich was very good).
Ondřej S — Google review
Cute little café with an americanized menu and nice decór. Good breakfast options. The place has very few tables, so you might have to wait. I would not say it's cheap, however one has to consider that Iceland is expensive.
Katherina F — Google review
Small place, not worth waiting 20min outside and 1 hour for simple breakfast. I wasn't in the rush, but still didn't plan to spend 2 hours to have 2 fried egg and cup of coffee. Coffee was good when its arrived after 15min. Waiters was nice but looked very tired, when you have such a busy place, why not to employ one more person. Plus prices is like Iceland - unique. Small breakfast £30 without Coffee. Give 4 only for hard working staff.

We've only been here for 3 days and this is our 3rd time in. We enjoy the espresso so much, we went ahead and got a stamp card, since we'll be here another week. The menu is small, the food is simple, and you can't go wrong. If you only stop in once, make sure you get pancakes! And if you're really hungry (or sharing) go for the infamous The Truck. A lovely little hole-in-the wall to fuel up in for a big day.
Daniel M — Google review
👍Overall 10/10. ⚠️The place is quite popular so once the tables are full, you have to wait outside on the bench. However, inside is super cute and the food is very good. Typical Iceland prices where I paid $55 for a breakfast that would’ve been $24 in the states but I learned to just close my eyes for the bill on this island and enjoy the trip 🫣😅
Kevin M — Google review
Good little breakfast spot Great hot chocolate. Fresh squeezed oj is a bit sour. Pancake flavor was not as good as I hoped and they are super thick and dense. Portions are huge so plan to share… fairly small and guessing maybe seating for 30 people ish. Was a line when they opened for us but only a few tables deep. Order at the counter after they admit you to choose a seat.
TravelR — Google review
Celiacs beware! Other reviews say there are gluten free options, by this they mean you can modify the meal by removing any bread. However, there is not a substitute gluten free bread or pancake. So only come here if you simply want eggs and potatoes. I ordered a gluten free order of Eggs & Bacon. To make it gluten free they removed the toast and gave me an extra egg. Except- when the order came out there were huge pieces of bread on the plate touching every food item. It seems the cook is the one that brought it out and when I asked if it was gluten free she was confused and asked me if I had ordered gluten free to which I said yes. Then she took the plate in the back, a few minutes later- not nearly as long as it took for the food to come out the first time, she came back with a plate that looked exactly the same except the bread had been removed. The food was what you would expect. The eggs tasted like eggs. The potatoes had a nice crispy shell. And the bacon was very good but some may think it salty. The homemade hot sauce was good, not too spicy and slightly sweet- might not be to everyone’s taste. The service is fine, you have to go up to the counter to order and pay. Wait staff does not come to the table except to drop off food. That said I was very impressed by the staff, there was one person managing seating people, taking orders, processing payment, making beverages (barista), and all with a kindly manner. The space is VERY cozy, sort of an underground bookstore cafe with warm/dark mood lighting. Lots of red and mustard yellow aesthetic. Clientele was causal, familial, and mixed. Kitchen is Soy (Soya) free.

Sandholt is a historic family-run bakery in Reykjavik, known for its wide variety of freshly baked goods, including sourdough bread, pastries, and cakes. The cozy eatery offers breakfast staples, sandwiches, and pastries alongside coffee and organic wines. The French-style pastries and bread are highly praised for their close resemblance to the original concept. Visitors can enjoy items from the breakfast menu such as shakshuka and pancakes topped with Icelandic strawberries.
Don’t let the queue to eat in scare you! It moves quite fast and the experience is well worth it. My friends and I enjoyed a variety of dishes and the pastries. The kleina was a standout! Probably one of the best we’ve had in Iceland. Surprisingly the yogurt with lemon curd was my favorite dish. The thick, creamy yogurt paired with the lemon curd was incredibly decadent. The interiors are warm and cozy. Despite the busyness, they are able to maintain a relaxing atmosphere. My friends and I were delighted that we got to sit in a booth filled with pillows. We felt right at home ☺️

Wednesday at 10:00 am and waited about 15 minutes to be seated. Friendly hostess and waiter. Our order wasn’t put in and after everyone around us received their drinks and food the waiter realized his error. We weren’t in a hurry and things happen. The food was delicious and I would highly recommend any of the pastry selection! We stopped back after walking around the city for a loaf of sourdough bread too.

The best bakery and lunch spot in Reykjavik! We have been here several days and noticed the line always out the door here and there’s a good reason! The line moves fast, waited about 10 minutes. Food, atmosphere, and service were 10/10. We had the pasta of the day, chicken salad, and tried several desserts. Everything was fresh and delicious. We will be back before we return home!

We came twice and had very different experiences. The first time, we came early and were sat at a table without much issues. Our server may have been new but was not familiar with the pastries and asked us to point at them on our phone (pictures). Otherwise it was a pleasant breakfast and the pastries (poppyseed bun, cinnamon danish, pan au chocolat, croissant, and a honey bun) were very good. Coffee and tea were well made. 5/5 experience. On our second trip the server was more knowledgeable but seemed to not care at all. She rushed us to order and offered no pleasantries (which would have been fine if not for the other issues). We ordered a poppyseed bun, pistachio danish, doughnut, waffle with bacon, lemon poppyseed bread and a salted pretzel. When the food came, we learned that she hadn’t heard us correctly when we ordered the pretzel and punched in an extra waffle instead. We pointed this out and the server acted like we had changed our order, giving us an attitude. Most of the laminated dough pastries were delicious, however the lemon poppyseed bread was dry and mealy. We finally got the pretzel after the other food had been finished (no rush at all for a cold pretzel they grabbed from the display) and they had brought one with no salt. At this point we just ate it and then paid (where we learned she had punched in 3 waffles from the cashier). Overall: Ambiance 4/5 Service 1/5 Laminated Pastries 5/5 Waffle 5/5 Soft Breads 4/5 Cake Breads 1/5 Pretzel 3/5 Coffee/Teas 4/5

This is one of the most popular bakeries in Reykjavik, and for good reason! We loved their pastries and couldn’t help but go back for a second time right before we had to fly back home. Get there early if you can! The crowd seems to pick up after 9:00A. In addition to serving up a variety of baked goods and chocolates, Sandholt is also a restaurant that serves actual breakfast and lunch dishes. When we went in at 9:30A one day, the entryway was packed with people waiting in line for pastries and others waiting for a table to dine in. + POPPY SEED BUN: This twisted golden bun was soft and bready, sprinkled evenly with poppy seeds and drizzled with a light sugary glaze. The bun itself didn’t have a strong flavor, but it goes well with a cup of coffee and was a great way to start the day. + PISTACHIO DANISH: This flaky pastry had a slight crispiness and was swirled with crushed pistachios. The layers were buttery and thin and I liked how this wasn’t too sweet. + BROWN SUGAR BUN: A must! Similar to a cinnamon roll, this bun was delightfully soft with a brown sugar cinnamon spread inside. Small pipings of frosting came on top, finished with crunchy chocolate pearls. Some of the brown sugar was caramelized on the bottom of the bun, giving it a little extra chew. It was such an indulgent treat. Pricing is not too bad considering the great quality of each pastry. If you only visit one bakery in Reykjavik, make sure it’s Sandholt!

Location: Laugavegur 36, 101 Reykjavík, Iceland — right on a main street in downtown. • Type of place: Bakery / café / brunch spot. A long-standing family bakery with a mix of traditional and more modern items. • History: Operating since 1920, and still under family oversight. They maintain a blend of old recipes & baking traditions, but also innovate somewhat. ⸻ Vibe & Atmosphere • Cozy, warm, pleasant interior; marble counters, nice presentation. • A spot many locals & tourists like for relaxing, meeting friends, enjoying pastries & coffee. • Often busy, especially mornings; queues are common, both for sit-in and takeaway

My boyfriend and I went here twice on our trip to Iceland! Both times the food and drinks were amazing! Super cozy restaurant with fresh made everything! The first time we went we got the Swiss mocha, orange juice, shashuka with pork and the salmon avocado toast! We also got a brown sugar bun that was a little too sweet for both of us but still really good. The second time we came here we got two Swiss mochas, the shashuka with bacon, the salmon avocado toast, the skyr with fruit and lemon curd, and we also got a chocolate cinnamon bun and a slice of marble cake to go. Everything was super delicious! My boyfriend ended up liking the shashuka with pork better but still said both options are great! We went on Saturdays both times around 12pm/1pm and the wait was only about 10mins or so just depends on your group size but they’re very efficient and friendly!

Sandholt is the perfect spot to relax and enjoy Reykjavík life for a while. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, and the staff is incredibly friendly and attentive. There’s a big variety of pastries, sandwiches, and hot dishes - everything looked delicious. We tried some pastries and coffee, and it was honestly one of the best bakery experiences we’ve had in Iceland. Prices are very fair for the quality you get. The location is great, right in the heart of the city, and it’s also a lovely place to sit down for lunch or brunch. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a place with great food, warm vibes, and a true Icelandic touch. 💛☕

Restaurant
Kaffivagninn is a charming breakfast and lunch cafe located by the water, known for its delicious smoked salmon breakfast plate. The restaurant, which dates back to 1935, was originally a literal coffee wagon where people would gather to enjoy their coffee. Over the years, it has evolved into a popular spot for both locals and visitors.
Had a delicious late lunch at Kaffivagninn - fresh fish & chips and 'cod tongues' in a garlic butter. Service from Anna was excellent. Restaurant is recently renovated - view over the harbour, lighting and music make it the perfect spot to enjoy a slightly wet afternoon!

We stopped in for dinner and can't recommend it enough! We had made reservations online, which I also recommend. They've only been reopened for a little over a week, but they were pretty full for dinner. The place is very cute and cozy, seated right on the water, and we got a window table with a nice view of all the boats. We ordered the fish soup, lamb tenderloin, and the "Joi Special". The food was amazing! Everything tasted fresh and had so much flavor. And we had the best waiter, Oskar. He made us feel like old friends over for dinner, and even brought out a beautiful dessert when he found out it was my birthday. Can't wait to go back and try more of their dishes!

Icelandic Gem! Thank you Carlos, Katarina, and Demetrius for making our visit so special. The hospitality was absolutely wonderful and the food was out of this world. My partner and I both had the Chef’s special- it was warming, filling, a fair price- and most importantly, delicious. If we had more time, we would return in a heartbeat. Definitely make time to stop by this beautiful harbor-side restaurant!

After 2 weeks of the Ring road trip, this is the first restaurant we came for a nice lunch because this is the oldest restaurant in Iceland, is situated by the harbor in downtown Reykjavík harbor. Amazing food with nice presentation.

Had dinner at Kaffivagninn and absolutely loved it! We ordered the fish and chips, super fresh and perfectly crispy. The atmosphere by the water was cozy and relaxing, and our server Antoniya was so kind and friendly (taught us Icelandic), which made the experience even better. Great food, great vibe, and great service definitely recommend stopping by!

There are plenty of great places to eat in this area of Reykjavik. Bit this restaurant just felt right. Fresh fish daily and a really nice outdoor seating area Oskar was charming and welcomed us. Told us the story of the restaurant. Food is fantastic and doesn’t kill the budget. Catch of the day and creamy seafood soup were our choices. Highly recommend this place. Oskar really knows what he’s doing!!

Loved the fish and chips and the chef special was also delicious, very rich and hearty. Staff were so nice, the seating and ambiance were modern but cozy and pleasant. Waterfront view, lovely scene with the boats. Prices were Icelandic reasonable, around $40 USD per plate.

Before visiting Reykjavik, I asked GPT what should not be missed. Kaffivagninn, Iceland' oldest restaurant, was on the list. Additionally, it came highly recommended by George, our guide at nearby Reykjavik Bike Tours. Thankfully for us, the restaurant had just reopened after an extensive interior renovation. From our travels to other Scandinavian countries, my wife and I know to order fish soup. Even better, Kaffivagninn’s serves traditional Icelandic fish stew…with melted cheese and Béarnaise, plus sweet rye bread and butter. And the Fish & Chips with red cabbage slaw is melt-in-your-mouth scrumptious. Here, service perfectly complements the food. This was a totally FIVE STAR experience!

Brauð & Co, located in Reykjavik, is a bakery known for its exceptional bread and pastries. The shop, housed in a small building adorned with colorful graffiti, offers a variety of freshly baked goods including stone-ground sourdough, blueberry and liquorice bread, rye bread, croissants, pretzels and buns. The cozy dining area can accommodate only a few people at a time.
Walked toward to visit Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavík, Iceland. Saw this bakery shop on the way. Smells amazing and lots of locals inside. It was a good sight! I wasn't hesitant to pop in! The twist buns and croissants etc looked amazing and smells really nice! I don't like the cinnamon so they recommended the vanilla or toffee flavour. That was the best bun I've tasted. The flavour and the texture. It was soft and warm. Yum!! We went back there to buy 4 more. Must try! One bun cost £4.95
Siri — Google review
The bakery is small and busy, so I felt rushed and didn’t have much time to consider all the options. I decided on the first thing that appealed to me, which was the pretzel croissant. Not a bad choice. It’s got the flaky texture of a croissant with the distinctive pretzel taste of lye. Quite unique and I recommend trying it. We also got some cinnamon and pecan pastries. I can’t personally sing their praises because I’m not a fan of those flavours, but the people who ate them enjoyed them. It would be nice to have a. dining area, but there is a small playground near the bakery where you can sit and eat.
Nicole C — Google review
It’s a cute little spot that serves a variety of pastries. We tried the famous Icelandic cinnamon roll and a square shaped pastry (not sure about the name, hahaaa) both were very cinnamon-y and quite sweet. It’s a great place to sample local sweets, though the only downside is that there’s no seating area, so everything is to-go. Other than that, it’s a perfect little nook! :)
Max L — Google review
honestly the best pastry I’ve had in a long time! I tried the caramel & müsti - absolutely incredible! A bit pricey, but totally worth it. There are only two seats by the window (otherwise it’s mostly to-go), and we were lucky enough to grab one - super cozy spot and 100% recommend! 🥐☕

Simply amazing. I love a proper bakery and these guys are legit. So much to choose from. I grabbed a couple of traditional Icelandic treats and both were very good. One was a chilli cheese twist bread and the other a flaky vanilla and cinnamon pastry. So so good.

Stopped by Brauð & Co while on vacation after seeing it on "Somebody Feed Phil." When Mr. Rosenthal said that Brauð & Co makes the best cinnamon roll in the world, he was not joking. Hands down - it's the best cinnamon roll I've ever had. I love a gooey center, and Brauð & Co somehow made their center gooey and molten like a lava cake. Americans, please note: the cinnamon roll is fully cooked. The center is supposed to be that way and it's FABULOUS! I think the cinnamon rolls in heaven will be like this. Go for the recommended standard cinnamon roll and thank me later! Way to go, Brauð & Co. You have achieved cinnamon roll perfection!!

The first place we visited after arriving in Iceland on October 11 was this bakery, and we absolutely loved it. The staff were as friendly as before, and one of the male staff members was especially kind to us. We were in a hurry to catch a whale watching tour, but his warm attitude really brightened our day. Thank you for your kindness and for making our visit so pleasant! The bread here is amazing, and your friendliness made it even more memorable. 💛
YUNM L — Google review
More than hype. Legit good. I wondered if I would like this place, as from photos it’s hard to tell if their famous cinnamon buns are moist or dry. I can attest they are very moist, especially when warm still fresh from the oven, full of butter, perfect balance of cinnamon and sugar including a bit of crispness in the outer rings from outer sugar crystallizing during the bake. Other pastries were also great. This place is legit good!

Reykjavik Roasters is a renowned coffee spot in Reykjavik, celebrated for its exceptional brews and skilled baristas who have won awards worldwide. With two locations, one near Hallgrimskirkja church and the other close to Hlemmur Square, it's a popular choice for locals and tourists alike. The original location on Karastigur boasts a modern interior but limited seating, while the second location offers a hipster vibe with unique decor and fine coffee options.
Cute simple stop for coffee and a light bite. We got cappuccinos with oat milk, porridge & the toast with red pesto. Staff was really nice. Found seating pretty quickly. Overall very good.

A proper coffee shop; no decaf, no syrups. Coffee and pastry were nice, over £12, however the service I received was not appreciated. I only noticed something was not right after standing there and drinks arriving to those who came way after me. This happened because of a shift change I believe. When I thought it was my drink as she said flat white, I asked if it was oat. She stated no, it's normal and I said that I was waiting a while and other drinks were being served. She said, without looking at me, it's not your fault, it's not my fault, nobody told me. Fair enough but you can see I'm the only one standing there for a while. Luckily kids were waiting patiently, the vibe inside is chill. And then kids played outside in the open play area while I had my coffee and they shared their hazelnut chocolate croissant.
Damla K — Google review
Reykjavik Roasters is a good local coffee shop. The atmosphere feels bright and surprisingly colorful. The staff did not put off the same vibe. They were on task and executed the orders with a robotic like precision. The coffee itself was pleasant but didn’t give me that first “wow” sip in the morning boost that I get at my favorite coffee shop. I still recommend it if you’re in the city and craving your caffeine fix.

Best cup of coffee on Reykjavík - well done and an adorable shop…roast is light and smooth. Service was wonderful and you can sit and stay or they did do take away…which we were meeting friends so grabbed it Togo.

The bakery welcomes you to take photos, it has the best cinnamon rolls. We bought 3 different pastries but the cinnamon roll was the first one to be finished. There was a line to get service but it moved very fast.

The location is perfect, set up in a small house on the intersection between main roads leading into town and roads leading up to the cathedral. It’s cute and full of coffee paraphernalia. As a bigger man, it feels a bit cramped, but the coffee is high quality, which makes up for a lack of space during peak time, and the staff are kind and friendly, so it’s worthwhile. Sadly, prices have gone up a lot! But the last time I visited was well over ten years ago…

Great coffee in this little coffee shop! Loved the vibe and the quality—definitely a cozy spot worth stopping by.

Crowded and SUPER rude staff, no smile, not friendly, cashier basically rolled her eyes at me and couldn’t wish we get out there faster. Maybe it’s an Icelandic thing? It’s our first day in Iceland, very disappointing, was gonna buy beans from them, very glad we didn’t

Icelandic restaurant
Restaurant
Café Loki is a charming Icelandic restaurant located in downtown Reykjavik, just opposite the famous Hallgrimskirkja church. It offers traditional Icelandic fare such as fish soup, meat stew, and freshly baked rye bread. The café provides a cozy and relaxed atmosphere with a wonderful view of the cathedral. Visitors can enjoy the scenic views during sunset while trying the traditional Icelandic rye bread ice-cream known as Rugbraudh ice-cream.
At Café Loki in Reykjavík, I had the best dessert of my life rye bread ice cream with skyr cake. The rye bread ice cream has a rich, caramel flavor from toasted rye bread, topped with whipped cream and rhubarb syrup, making it a unique Icelandic treat. The skyr cake, light and tangy, complemented it perfectly. The café is located across from Hallgrímskirkja, Reykjavík’s iconic church. Designed by Guðjón Samúelsson, construction began in 1945 and was completed in 1986. The church’s striking architecture, inspired by Iceland’s natural landscapes, makes it a must-see landmark.

Thank you for letting us very late on Sunday evening and served us food even the kitchen was about to close. All of the food was amazing, staff was super friendly, talked us through all the menu. For me Staff always define the venue, all the dishes we try was delicious plus the views outside, perfect combination. Highly recommend!

Amazingly well placed cafe with great coffee, super nice staff and awesome Icelandic breakfast, lunch and dinner options. I really could not fault it as it exceeded our expectations. And right in front of the beautiful Hallgrimskirkja. Full marks.

We had the priest coffee which was strong! I personally have never tried Brennivín and kind of regretted it since it was early in the day. We also tried the lamb soup and the Viking platter! The lamb soup was hearty and homemade vibes. The Viking platter honestly tastes just like it looks! Nothing amazing, just dried fish, rye bread, and the well-known fermented shark. The ammonia really hits you hard and an added double whammy with the Brennivín shot. Probably wouldn’t recommend this if you have stomach sensitivities! Haha, but a good experience nonetheless. My absolute favorite was the rye bread ice cream! I would totally recommend. I think hands-down best thing I tasted in Iceland.
Dasom — Google review
For context, we only ordered the fermented shark and rye bread ice cream. The fermented shark is actually quite good! You have to chew it for a bit and there’s an ammonia flavor at the end, but it is actually a quite mild flavor. The rye bread ice cream is very tasty. There’s a lot of rye bread mixed in (maybe 1:1 ice cream to bread ratio lol). There’s a caramel sauce over whipped cream on top. All in all, a tasty snack! Note that the portions are small!! There’s just four tiny pieces of shark (IMO that’s enough for 4 people!) and the ice cream is one small scoops worth. Total for the two was just under 3000 ISK.

It was my first time eating traditional Icelandic food so I was really excited. The lamb soup was huge, and comforting. The meat was tender and the soup felt like home cooking (in a good way) I read Independent People earlier this year so it really did make me feel like an Icelandic Farmer in the winter. The malt tasted like a cross between Supermalt and Dr Pepper which I enjoyed but the standout by far for me was the Rye bread. It was my first time trying it but it was amazing. Have been thinking about it ever since. The staff were super friendly too and you can see Hallsgrimska from the entrance.

Amazing food and atmosphere. You could have a church view next to the window. I went there twice and had different food. Lamb shank is my favourite! Both the meat and vegetables had great taste.

Great food. We say upstairs (reccomended) for the view of the church and cool mural with loki history. Great food and dessert and wonderful service. I had lamb and cod and carrots cake was just divine. Great traditional food in great location. Truly a unique little spot worth the price will go again

Snaps Bistro is a charming French-style restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere and a beautiful conservatory. The bistro offers a mix of French cuisine, cocktails, and even vegan options. Its breezy interior features wooden floors, a stylish square bar, and large windows that create an inviting ambiance for all kinds of patrons - from hipsters to families to business people.
Snaps Bistro is simply exceptional! We had the Beef Bourguignon, and it was absolutely divine—perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. The lobster soup was equally phenomenal, rich, and comforting. To top it off, their cocktails were nothing short of legendary. The atmosphere was cozy and vibrant, making it a truly unforgettable experience. If you're in Reykjavik, this place is a must-visit!

I ordered the cod and absolutely recommend it! We also had a non-alcoholic passionfruit cocktail and an amazing alcohol-free sparkling Cava truly top-notch 👌 , one of the best we’ve had! Adam was so nice and brought such great energy to our experience. Would definitely come again! 💃🏻

Our entire experience at Snaps was amazing, we went for tea on our first night in Reykjavik the food was outstanding, one of the best meals I have ever had. We were staying at Hotel Odinsve next door to Snaps and had breakfast here which was also incredible, had everything you could possibly want for breakfast and more. We will definitely return when we come back to Reykjavik.

Decent food and service, but not quite what the commercials make it out to be. On the plane, we saw a commercial for this place, so we made sure we tried it out. It very much reminded me of restaurants in France. It's pretty small, pretty tight, pretty small tables. But, the food portions were pretty big. I had a burger. The service was OK. The atmosphere was OK, but it was a bit crowded and buzzy. Many customers, I imagine a mix of both locals and travelers, seemed a bit pretentious. That's the impression that I got. Nothing special here. Just like most of Iceland. I didn't get this vibe from about eight other restaurants we experienced. Get ready, Iceland. Because I'm about to drop some other reviews and this is about as good as it gets. I was pretty disappointed with Iceland. We did get to see some Northern Lights right outside as we exited that evening. #iceland #review #travel #foodie

What a wonderful establishment! Not only was I greeted right when I walked in the door our food was timely supported as well as Aran the bartender was immaculate. She was knowledgeable, kind and so quick with her service definitely will be coming back and definitely five star.

Love the place aesthetically and good service but the fish of the day is bad. Everything boiled from fish to potatoes which were soggy. Carrots undercooked. I hope it improves as I’d be willing to one day try again as I like the location.
Nick W — Google review
Unfortunately, the restaurant staff could use some hospitality training. I sat down around 1 pm with my laptop and a small pastry I’d bought elsewhere, planning to order a coffee. Even though the restaurant was completely empty, I was immediately asked to leave. In the end, I decided not to stay or order anything — that’s not the kind of attitude guests expect in a hotel restaurant. If people were actually dining, I’d understand, but when it’s empty, this kind of behavior just feels unwelcoming.
Alex E — Google review
The staff at Slippbarinn are so friendly and accommodating. I had an early bus (not enough time to do the whole buffet), so I asked for something to go and the host explained that since it was buffet only, I could just grab a pastry on the house. Not to mention the pastry was delicious! It’s a great atmosphere and I would definitely recommend Slippbarinn and the Reykjavík Marina hotel.

Not sure if my cousin’s wife asked for a private room or staged a polite coup in Icelandic. Either way, we got one — and honestly, it felt like VIP treatment. The staff rolled with it like pros and set us up with a beautiful spread of breads, cheeses, and meats that looked like it belonged in a magazine. Service was spot on — friendly, efficient, and accommodating. Five stars, no hesitation.

We had a pretty good experience at this cocktail bar and restaurant. We called in a reservation which is always good. We were greeted right away, but just from observing you could see they were having issues with service. Many tables looking to order or for tabs. We stayed. The host was a champ, stepping up getting things started. Craft cocktails were creative, tasty and eye-catching. We had the fresh fish in a pan and steak sandwich, both great selections. The fish did was fresh and exceptional. Our guests had burgers. They were good but had had spicier sauce on them not noted on the menu. It worked out. Overall a good experience but no real great connection to the place or staff. This place is located down by the water in Reykjavik downtown.

We love the fish of the day in pan which is the cod that day, and the seafood soup with shrimp scallops. Cosmopolitan is quite ok, the dessert chocolate cake is even better than expectation as normally it would be so sweet but not for this one. Not 5 stars just because of the price, and the waiter didn’t remind that the hotel guest can have 10% off.

My boyfriend and I came here on one of our days in Reykjavik! Definitely a spot with lots of locals! Staff were super friendly and helpful with converting their menu to English for us! We unfortunately missed breakfast but we got the Salmon lox bread which I really enjoyed, it had lots of good flavor to it and my boyfriend got a bleu cheese potato omelette which was okay but if given the opportunity he would get something else.

Now I know why Pedro Pascal chose this place to visit. I heard stories from other people about this place. I finally came on a gloomy rainy day and OMG that was spectacular. I'm a sucker for eggs benedict and these were the best I ever had. And even though I'm a fan of Braud-style cinammon rolls, the soft buns with frosting here were a dream. Yassss! Will come again.

Lost a customer today .. shame ! I have been a patron for years: not anymore! Extremely rude Spaniard employee at the counter, gave me a “dress down” for taking in a gluten free muffin bought next door to have with “their” pricy cappuccino, after her colleague shortly earlier advised me to do so, being their kitchen closed ( by 2 min only , I’d like to add) and could not “ possibly “ accommodate any food requests to serve that I could eat . A bit of emotional intelligence, empathy , common sense and good manners go a long way in business , dear Kaffihús Vesturbæjar owner. Just a thought! Regards .

Nice neighborhood café for breakfast. Good espresso drinks, and you can pick up pastries from Brauð & Co right next door. The granola with skyr and berries was fresh and tasty (the blueberries here are surprisingly big). The place has a unique style and seems mostly local outside of the more touristy areas of the city. A good spot to sit, read, or grab a bite if you’re nearby.

Went there twice during our trip. We ordered toast, tomato soup, and cauliflower soup — all amazing. The staff we met were polite, and the restaurant's decoration was quite original, definitely worth seeing. The best thing about this place is that it's pretty affordable for Iceland. We had a great time!

The first impression when entering was nice but the guy that served us looked like a rehabilitated addict that never worked in a café before. When trying to place the chocolate cake on the plate he touched it with his finger and licked it after and wash it only with water and no soap. We were in shock when witnessing that. He tried to hide the mess with whipped cream but I haven’t asked for it on the chocolate cake. The apple crumble with the syrup looks like someone just threw up on the plate. The place is cute.

A nice cozy cafe. The coffee crumb cake and skyr ostakaka (Icelandic cheese cake with berry jelly) were delicious! The 2 stars i am giving are for location and decór. The food is simply unacceptable. I had a toast that was dry and tasteless and when i asked for some mayonnaise for the chips (chips out of a bag), it was brought to me unwillingly. The chocolate chip cookie was truly ineadible. Baka Baka is a versatile establishment situated in a historic building in downtown Reykjavik. By day, it operates as a popular bakery and cafe, offering an array of freshly baked pastries and organic sourdough breads made with Icelandic stone-milled flour. The menu features signature items such as cardamom buns and sourdough croissants.
We tried Cinnamon rolls at a few popular places and this one was our favorite! Just the right amount of sweetness with a texture I enjoyed. We liked them so much we went every day for breakfast while we were in Reykjavik.

Had expectations high due to the reviews. Ordered the cardamom bun. Chewy and cold. Nothing special. Had the homemade sausages, small portion, 2 sunny side eggs and salad served was a mishmash not to my liking. But the service staffs are awesome a d hardworking. Polite yet friendly to everyone. Hard to get such staffs. Kudos to the team.

Visited this location in October 2025. Great service and atmosphere from this location. They’re a lot busier during breakfast. We ate breakfast and dinner on different days. Breakfast was a pleasant shakshuka with some tea. Liked the spices for the shakshuka. Good options (pastries!) and service. Dinner was great service, but the pizza we got needed more oomph or a standout flavor profile with the potato pizza. The crust was great though!

That was the best French toast I’ve ever had in my life! The service from EIBA was exceptional — truly above and beyond. I asked for my French toast to be served with maple syrup and whipped cream, which isn’t a usual request in Reykjavík, but she made sure it was done perfectly. The French toast itself was soft, flavorful, and delicious; the berries were fresh, and the lemon curd struck the perfect balance — not too sour. The maple syrup was impressively close to authentic Canadian syrup. My flat white was hot and perfectly made.

Welcome to Deig, a vibrant bakery nestled in downtown Reykjavik that’s making waves with its delightful offerings. This charming spot is an offshoot of the renowned burger haven Le Kock and opens its doors early for breakfast until their scrumptious goods run out. At Deig, everything from bagels to doughnuts is crafted in-house, ensuring freshness and quality.
Cool atmosphere and great service. The donuts are amazing especially the crullers, the jam in the filled donuts was amazing too, I could have just eaten it with a spoon. Also tried the bagels and coming from the northeast USA where bagels are a religion this pace did not disappoint. It was odd they only had 4 kinds of bagels but they had an everything and that is best type so all is well. Did the smoked salmon with caper cream cheese, which again, is a holy thing from where i am from and this place does it right. Do not miss this place in your travels of Reykjavik!

A cafe that sells bagels with a variety of fillings. Ordered the tuna salad and veggie filling to go with Parmesan bagel. The bagel is warmed up and kept crispy. Though the tuna salad is the usual what you get and doesn’t have the wow factor, but it has the homely taste. Hot chocolate is just right and not thick. Nice and warm breakfast on a cold day.

Really excellent breakfast spot! We were obsessed with the donuts! Might even be the up there as a top 5 donut in my lifetime. Bagel and cream cheese were great too. Definitely recommend if you’re in the area.

It's highly rated for good reason. Great bagel sandwiches and selection of pastries and drinks. Breakfast here is a must. You might have to wait in line, but there is plenty of seating.
David S — Google review
This bakery was absolutely amazing! Everything in the case looked incredible, but the crème brûlée donut was next-level. They actually sprinkle sugar on top and brûlée it, so it has that perfect golden crunch when you bite in. The filling inside was creamy and rich but not overly sweet — seriously one of the best donuts I’ve ever had. And the pretzel bagel with chive cream cheese was just as good in a completely different way — perfectly chewy, a little salty like a pretzel, and the cream cheese was fresh and full of flavor. It’s clear they really care about quality and details here. Whether you’re stopping in for breakfast, coffee, or a treat, this place is a 10 out of 10 bakery. I’d go back in a heartbeat — and definitely for another one of those crème brûlée donuts!
JT C — Google review
Traveled from the U.S. after seeing DEIG Workshop all over social media — the hype is real for the crème brûlée donut, which is absolutely worth trying. Unfortunately, the bagels and sandwiches didn’t live up to expectations, especially compared to what you'd find in American bakeries on the east coast. It does have a cool vibe and a great selection. It is worth visiting for the atmosphere and donuts.

These were some of the best doughnuts we have ever had! Perfect texture and flavor. If I had one complaint, it would be that the filter coffee was a little too strong for my liking, but that's coming from an American not used to European coffee culture. The bagel sandwich we had was also very good.

The food was really good. Was it value for money? Probably. This was our most expensive meal in Iceland. It was a great meal on the whole. And the food was excellent. The plating was also very good. Everyone was satisfied. Except for the volcano white chocolate dessert which was actually not worthy of being on the menu. We left it uneaten. It was too sweet and rich to enjoy. The flavors were very good. The Atlantic crab could be skipped. Maybe Sumac on the whole was a better experience and our best in Iceland for food.

I stayed at The Reykjavik Edition for a week and ate at Tides every day, which let me run through most of what the kitchen does. The style is modern Icelandic with very clean flavors, great seafood and lamb, and a clear focus on top local produce. Evenings run a tasting format while breakfast and lunch are simpler, which keeps the quality high across the day. Execution was consistently precise. Raw plates were bright and well seasoned, cooked plates showed good heat control, and seasoning stayed disciplined. One night a kitchen equipment issue meant the team pivoted to a tartare led service and it turned into a memorable, creative dinner rather than a compromise. Menu touches like 1,000-day aged Feykir cheese, careful use of the Josper grill, and well judged desserts fit the concept. For me this was the most complete hotel restaurant experience in Reykjavik, and easily worth planning into a stay.

I am in love with this place, elegant, beautiful atmosphere and the service was incredible since the hostess welcomed me to my server Nabila, she is super nice, friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and hospitality. I decided to order the testing menu and a cocktail 10/10, she also recommended to me to order a red wine (Malbec) to pairs with the main course, it was lamb, she definitely wasn’t wrong with that advice, because elevated all the flavors. If you go to Iceland I highly recommend to get a special diner here.

This was our most memorable dinner of our 8-night stay throughout Iceland. Pricey, but SO worth it! The restaurant is simply stunning. The lighting, music and decor all combine to create the most incredible atmosphere. The service is beyond top notch. We had a special birthday for one of our family members, and the chefs went above and beyond to accommodate his dietary restrictions (vegan) in creating a delicious appetizer and over-the-top dessert. Highest compliments to the chefs! Filipe, the bartender, makes craft cocktails as good as they get (try the Mexican Old Fashioned). Our server, Victor, was so attentive and skilled. Just a 10/10 experience all the way around.

Four of us came here for dinner on a Saturday evening as the capstone to our 9 days in Iceland, expecting the Michelin-recommended experience to be a worthy finale to our amazing trip. Sadly, that was not the case. While the food was excellent, the service was genuinely quite bad, and I don't say that lightly. Basic slowness turned to outright rudeness by the end of the night, a comically antithetical twist on the Michelin recognition proudly displayed on the wall near our table. It took 30 minutes before we even received our starter popovers, and another 50 minutes after that before we were served the first course. Nearby us, other tables were being compensated with additional popovers for the restaurant-wide delay. For us, nothing, not even acknowledgement of the delay from our waitress except to say it was "being plated" when we finally, desperately, asked her when we could expect the food to arrive, about 10 minutes before it actually came. The only thing that came at a reasonable interval was dessert, a decadent slice of basque cheesecake with the smoothest mango sorbet and thinly sliced orange garnish. After our dessert, the waitress brought us our check, and I started to ask if she could split it for us for convenience, but she abruptly left after I'd gotten only a few words in, and went to the table next to ours to converse with them for several minutes. I don't mind that she was more attentive to other tables, but it highlighted the mediocrity of our own treatment, especially in light of the chronic delays. The rudeness to us at the end of an unacknowledged painfully slow meal was one final nail in the coffin. When we finally paid our bill and were ready to leave, they interrupted our exit to have us join them at the counter to resolve a 2000 ISK gap in their calculations, an awkward and hilarious gaffe at the end of our inglorious experience. At this price point and given their Michelin recommendation, we were disappointed at how lackluster our experience was. I would recommend spending your money elsewhere.

Reykjavík Roasters, formerly known as Kaffismidhja Islands, has been a pivotal player in Reykjavik's coffee scene since its establishment in 2008. With multiple locations, the Asmundarsalur outpost stands out for its setting within a Bauhaus building turned exhibition space, offering stunning views of the iconic Hallgrimskika church.
Here’s the translation: Single-origin coffee from Brazil Santos – fresh, perfectly roasted, and very tasty. I had it as a cappuccino with oat milk – a very high level of coffee. A pleasant place with a young, welcoming atmosphere. Excellent service.
Hanita R — Google review
Reykjavik Roasters has several branches around the city including this place along Brautarholt street. There is a fair-sized indoor seating area, they do a typical coffee shop food menu along with their range of coffee drinks. Opening hours are 7am to 5pm daily. We stopped by recently and were served a very good espresso macchiato and americano. Espresso was bold with good flavour, both drinks were nicely prepared and tasted good. Dishes being served to other patrons during our visit looked pretty good as well. Would gladly return to Reykjavik Roasters based on this experience.

Reykjavík Roasters is a great spot for coffee! The cappuccino was excellent, the staff were super friendly, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. A perfect place to relax and enjoy a quality cup of coffee in Reykjavík.

Went there for breakfast. Seemed like a spot for locals too, which is a good sign. The staff is not the fastest, but like this the atmosphere is very relaxed and they are very kind. Recommend this for a relaxed breakfast.

One of the few places that is open early on a weekend. Coffee was good and had one of the best avocado toast. Balanced well with the lemon. Love their bread too.
Chris K — Google review
Best coffee in Reykjavik? Might be! Loved it so much we came back for seconds. Chia pudding was super tasty and the avocado toast was as pretty as it was delicious. Lots of locals and tourists alike, but the line moves quickly and there was plenty of seating.

Really good coffee, I ordered a flat white. Cute place overall, the staff is very very moody, but I didn’t mind. Only one woman was smiling, the other ones seemed pretty annoyed. Hopefully they are ok 🙌
Maxwell B — Google review
Service is incredibly slow and not friendly. :( They charge extra for take away cups that are small as there is only one size for the coffees. Here is the tiny cappuccino.

Te & Kaffi is the leading chain of coffee shops in Iceland, boasting 15 establishments including regular coffee shops, Micro-Roast coffee shops, and a Micro-Roast Vinbar. Despite its size, Te & Kaffi maintains the essence of a third wave specialty coffee house at its location on Adhalstraeti street, where Reykjavik's first Viking settled.
Great location for a excellent filter coffee (free refill) & cappuccino. Nice atmosphere, soft music in background. You order in the front for takeaway or to sit inside, you give your name and when ready your name will be called to get your order.

We visited Te & Kaffi while waiting to check in to our hotel and it was perfect (we were there for probably 3 hours)! There's loads of seating in the back and you can easily wheel your suitcase through (we had 2 large ones) and the staff were so friendly and the food was delicious. Quite reasonably priced too I think :)
Megan B — Google review
Wonderful atmosphere and service. The coffee and food were excellent. The place was a bit busy, which was not surprising for a Saturday noon. It is rather pricey, like everything else in Iceland. They didn't have enough personnel to clean the tables, so I had to move a few used cups to the edge of my table to make room for my order. Nevertheless, I would definitely visit that place again.
Alexander V — Google review
Great way to warm up on a chilly Icelandic day! We thought the shop was super cozy and the food/drinks were wonderful. My husband went across the street to do a little shopping while I finished my latte and snapped this pic.
Cher W — Google review
I stopped by this Icelandic coffee chain to grab a Flat White to go with a pastry that I picked up from a nearby bakery. It was robust, bold, smooth and comforting to sip on while walking back to our hotel. This shop initially looks small with just a couple seats up front near the counter, however, the space opens up into a comfortable dining area with several tables in the back. In addition to coffee and sweet baked goods, their menu also featured Croque Monsieur, bagels and toast options. All I needed was a coffee to go, but if I had more time that morning, this would be a nice cozy spot for a simple breakfast.

Dark roast for the coffee. The sourdough bread is not the best we had around town but the bagel is great.

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Reykjavik, Jörgensen Kitchen & Bar is a popular dining destination celebrated for its delectable cuisine, inviting ambiance, and exceptional hospitality. Whether you're seeking a casual lunch, a romantic evening out, or a joyous gathering with loved ones, this chic establishment caters to all occasions.
We were all very impressed with the quality of the food here and the service. The plates are beautifully presented and the food well cooked. Much more than just a kitchen and bar and yet exactly what a modern kitchen and bar should be.

Nice folks. Cod (fish of the day) was very nice and tasty - had a bell pepper sauce and mild pureed sweet potato. Lamb was ordered med rare but came out over well done. Flavors were ok but wouldn’t order it again. Definitely a great value for a weekday lunch.
Lindsey B — Google review
Jörgensen Kitchen & Bar is the hotel restaurant for Miðgarður by Center Hotels and after checking in cold, wet and very tired after a huge day touring the south coast in the pouring rain, we walked in here with no reservation and were treated to a superb meal. The seats were all taken so they found us a spot in the hotel lobby, but the service didn’t falter, the food came out fast, and they dealt with the request for a gluten free meal superbly. The set menu here is the best bargain in Reykjavik. For little more than the cost of a main at similar places, they deliver 3 courses of top quality food. After checking out the prices and the menus elsewhere, we decided to come back here the next night, and had another top quality meal.

Big shoutout to the amazing staff you guys made our brunch! Big thanks to Marco Tadeusz and Diego

Jörgensen Kitchen & Bar – 5/5 Stars Had a fantastic dining experience at Jörgensen Kitchen & Bar in Reykjavík. The food was really good—beautifully presented (even though I forgot to snap a picture before digging in 😄) and even better tasting! What truly stood out was the amazing service. Our waiter was friendly and professional, and I overheard an issue at the next table—the head waiter handled it quickly and respectfully, which was very impressive to see. A great atmosphere, delicious food, and a team that genuinely cares about the guest experience. Highly recommended!

Located in the heart of a city, Duck & Rose is a trendy restaurant offering an eclectic and semi-upscale menu in a cool setting. The restaurant features a variety of options including duck, Italian cuisine, beef, and fish to cater to different preferences. With friendly service and mouthwatering cuisine, it offers delightful dining experiences.
As its name (Duck and Rose) suggests, ordering duck (here on the photo a plate called "duck two ways") you will not be disappointed - you will actually love the experience! This is also due to the waitressess and waiters there. I must mention a waiter from Tunisia (he is very tall) who apparently has been working there for quite some time, so he will advise you very well what to order, and you will also be amazed by his ability of communicating in various languages!

Had our brunch at Duck & Rose. It was a bit crowded and the staff placed us near the door. We ordered lúxus brunch which includes bottomless drink,a meal from the brunch menu and pancakes for dessert. Overall the food was good and worth the price.
Melanie ( — Google review
I gave this place a 4-star rating mainly because of the luxury brunch, which included a brunch item, bottomless drinks for 2hrs and a mini stack of pancakes and berries. The food was average, but the bottomless drinks for the price point was worth it and definitely the standout! We had a group of 13 of us that split onto two tables. The food presentation was great, the atmosphere was nice and it’s a very convenient location.

Sitting outside in the sun and enjoying nice food and cold drinks is wonderful. The portions are big and the food was great. Took a while for them to clean the table, and I am not a big fan of the QR code ordering, but all in all good experience. The restaurant looks nice on the inside also and the toilet's were clean.

I came with my wife on Thursday evening. The place was packed, but the guy in charge was super friendly and asked us to hang out at the bar while we waited. About 10 minutes later, he got us a table. The staff were all really nice, attentive, and made us feel welcome. I had the fish, my wife went for the lamb, and both dishes were seriously delicious. All in all, a great experience. We left full and happy. Would definitely come back!

Wonderful restaurant from the staff who were very pleasant & attentive to the food which was simply amazing! Lemon tagliatelle tasted with every mouthful like a taste explosion everything was well cooked, and plentiful king prawns & scallops, with just the right balance of lemon. A beautiful plate of food, With the finale of meringue pomegranate & cream with white chocolate YUM again the balance of flavours was wonderful. The steak sandwich was well cooked, flavoursome & a real good hearty portion if your looking for something delicious & filling this is for you, finishing off with my favourite tiramisu, don't let the portion size fool you as it's packed with flavour. iRaving about this restaurant but rightly so.

While it may boast familiar dishes like steak and schnitzel, the flavors here are truly unique. Known for its lively atmosphere, especially on weekends with DJs spinning tunes and guests dancing the night away, Solon serves as a café, bistro, restaurant, and bar all in one.
We were looking for somewhere nice to eat on our first night in Iceland, and Solon didn’t fail to impress! The baked cheese and the lamb shank were both to die for, and we were really happy with our choices. The restaurant had a vibrant atmosphere, even for a Sunday night, and the staff were all warm and friendly! Would definitely recommend, especially the lamb shank! ❤️

The food here is delicious. As are the drinks. Our server was polite, extremely helpful, and funny. We ordered the fish special of the day and the fish and chips. Both good portions and very well prepared. For a starter, the burrata, which was fantastic. Drinks were the basil gimlet (delicious) and a mocktail with passion fruit and other juices. Highly recommend a visit.

Only went in there to try the catch of the day, which was Ling, and my goodness was it worth it. The best fish dish I've ever had! Full compliments to the chef, if I am ever in Iceland again, I'll be sure to come here. The service from Ray was wonderful, he is knowledgeable and friendly!

The vibe of this place was top notch! We loved how cozy yet modern it was. The coktails were trendy but delish and what really was amazing was the food! We thoroughly enjoyed our meals. I had the artic char was light and healthy! My husband went with fish and chips which had this Icelandic twist on it which was perfection! They have a secrets kids menu which my kids really enjoyed…they got protein in which as you know is tough! It was not frozen chicken nuggets and fries…it was all so fresh! A really lovely restaurant! I pre booked this restaurant for our group of 7 on a Saturday night as I liked the menu. The staff are very welcoming and super helpful. Nikki was our server and she was so lovely, warm, and chatty with us. Lovely atmosphere in the restaurant. The food was excellent, I would definitely recommend the shellfish soup and fish and chips. The only thing to note is that the bar closes at 10 so last orders are just before.

The food and service were exceptional. The fish and chips was not only delicious but also pleasantly non-greasy, which I greatly appreciated. What truly stood out to me, however, were the desserts. I highly recommend saving room for one; they were the highlight of the dining experience. Please don't leave without trying them! It was truly an exceptional experience.

Raðagerði Veitingahús is a charming neighborhood restaurant located in the town of Seltjarnarnes, just a short drive from Reykjavik. Housed in a historic building dating back to the late 19th century, the interior exudes traditional charm, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere for diners. The menu features Neapolitan-style pizzas with both classic and innovative toppings, such as smoked lamb and local mushrooms.
Raðagerði is an amazing place for brunch! The location is charming, the atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, and the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. We had a great experience — the food was fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. We were especially happy to see that they offer vegan options, which were just as tasty and satisfying as everything else on the menu. It’s the kind of place where you feel at home right away. Highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy a high-quality brunch in Reykjavík, whether you’re vegan or not!

This is a hidden gem.. We found this place through a recommendation and very glad we did. They have a great selection of food. We ordered a burrata pizza, mascarpone meatballs, lasagne and slow cooked short ribs.. All of them were delicious. Loved each and every bite.
Onur Ş — Google review
Wouldn't recommend - I had very high expectations for this place, as it came highly recommended. The sauce was so thick and heavily applied that it completely overwhelmed the pizza, especially the delicate flavor of the burrata. The only thing I could taste was the concentrated tomato puree. Despite reaching out the the restaurant, I feel my opinion fell on deaf ears as they focused on the quality of the sauce, rather than the quantity.
Dalreen S — Google review
Ráðagerði is a cozy restaurant & café located in Seltjarnarnes, by the Grótta lighthouse and nature reserve. It is housed in a historic timber building dating from before 1900. Though it feels like it’s out in the countryside, it’s very accessible — only about a 6–7 minute drive from central Reykjavík. The views are a big part of the charm: sea, wide expanses, volcanoes, mountains, and the lighthouse make the surroundings special. Especially in summer, outdoor dining is pleasant; in winter the atmospheric setting is good for quiet evenings, sometimes even northern lights.
Nataliya R — Google review
We had the best time at your place guys. The atmosphere, the staff, the food just everything ❤️! We messed up the reservation and you still accomodated and then were attentive to the special birthday request. Thanks a lot for making the experience amazing. Beautiful oceanside location & amazing pizza! We sat outside to watch the sunset, saw the lighthouse turn on, & listened to the waves - it was gorgeous! Kex Hostel Reykjavik is a trendy accommodation option that offers laid-back dorms and private rooms. Located in the Old Harbour neighborhood, it provides a tranquil setting with design-forward interiors and friendly service. The hostel features a gastropub, communal kitchens, and a patio for guests to enjoy. Housed in a former biscuit factory, Kex is known for its popular bar where both international tourists and locals socialize over crafted cocktails and local lagers.
Stayed here with my son for 3 nights. Its not the nicest part of Reykjavik because theres a lot of building work happening there, but the old town isn't far. The rooms are spacious and clean, I shared a twin room with my son. There are plenty of showers that are kept clean, a communal kitchen, and a nice bar downstairs. Lots of youngish people passing through, chilled vibe. We had a great stay. Would definitely recommend it.

Could use some more attention. Toilet seats are loose, handsoap and paper towel dispensers are often empty. Garbage bins are overflowing. Rooms are clean and the bar downstairs is nice aswell. Location is great.
Nick — Google review
It's my second time staying at Kex. Rooms are clean, bedding is comfy and clean. Bathrooms and showers are a little dated and worn. It's a great location and construction work next door does not impact guests at all. In general, they've committed to that worn, vintage aesthetic instead of the usual hotel pristine look. Which is why I may take some of the cleanliness comments with a grain of salt. Shower was cleaned regularly during my stay and I always encountered housekeeping doing something. Breakfast is ok, but I wouldn't rave about it. Common areas depend a lot on other guests cleaning after themselves, and one fridge on my floor stoped working.
Gerardo M — Google review
The Location of the Hostel is really nice with a nice neighborhood with lots of restaurants nearby, supermarkets were just at 2 minutes walk, high street was also 2 min walk away with lot of shopping options, the promenade was right opposite the hostel with great views. All the Tour Operators pick up points were nearby so we did not have to pay anything extra for hotel pickup. Reception was operated 24*7 so there was someone available to get information or answer any questions. The vibe of the hostel was very lively with a nice bar on the 1st Floor with great views of the promenade and the lake. Every place that we wanted to explore in Reykjavík was at a walkable distance from the hostel.

I stayed at this hostel for six days. Overall, my stay was good, but I had some problems on my first day. When I made my reservation, I specifically requested a bottom bunk bed, and the hostel confirmed by email that my request had been accepted. However, when I arrived, the bed I had booked was already occupied by someone else. I went to the reception and they told me I could choose any available bed. I chose another bottom bunk that was free at the time. The next day, after a 13hour tour, I came back to my room and discovered that all my belongings and clothes were gone and someone else was sleeping in my bed. I was really upset and went to reception to find out what happened. When I got there, I found all my things at the reception desk. The staff member said that the cleaning staff had removed them, which I found completely unacceptable. He apologized and told me to choose another bed, but only top bunks were available at that point. I found this situation very disrespectful. Other than that, the kitchen and bathrooms were clean and well equipped, so the rest of the stay was fine.
Alessandra S — Google review
A fine experience at KEX Hostel, at an affordable price. I stayed in a shared 6-person dorm. My fellow dorm-mates were quiet and respectful. Bathroom across the hall was frequently cleaned. Kitchen was often a bit too crowded for my preference, and the fridge very full with many people's food, but overall a good experience for a hostel. The front desk staff was kind and helpful, although at certain times of day the desk was unoccupied and it was difficult to track someone down. Good location within short walking distance to many downtown shops, restaurants, and attractions.

not too far from the city centre, like a 15/20 min walk or so.. bit of a pain there’s no lift, and the smaller rooms seem to be up on the 4th floor. i was up there and the door to the girls bathroom in the middle of the corridor wouldn’t shut properly, i had to keep it closed with one hand while washing with the other 😂the 8 bed dorm was decent, loads of space but the lockers were tiny and made of metal, noisy.
Gabriele L — Google review
Enjoyed our stay at Kex, which was in a private room with a private bathroom and a sofabed, sleeping up to 4 in total. Although it was on the second floor, and adjacent to an outdoor sitting area, it was quiet most of the time. The construction from next door barely made it through the windows when they were closed. The room, with the sofa opened to a bed, was a bit tight to get around, but we weren't in the room much, and of course the the sofa can be closed. The mattresses were excellent and the 1 duvet per person is a nice touch. The staff was very helpful, and parking was manageable. In total for 3 days, I believe the total was around $20. There is a lot of character to the building. It is a hostel, but we chose the private rooms - nevertheless we had access to the shared kitchen, which was fully stocked, and most helpful as eating out is generally overpriced. We shopped at Bonus, which had some reasonably priced staples. Overall, we'd highly recommend Kex to anyone looking for a good location downtown in Reykjavik.

Klambrar Bistrø is a charming restaurant located within the Reykjavik Art Museums Asmundarsafn, offering a unique dining experience that seamlessly blends art and nature. Situated in the lush surroundings of Klambratun Park, this bistro provides a tranquil setting where guests can unwind amidst creativity and tranquility. The sun-dappled interior with large windows offers stunning views of the park's greenery, creating an ideal spot for a peaceful meal.
Beautiful place in a museum, with a view of park. Very clean, with a nice atmosphere, and even a little kid’s corner with building blocks and paper w crayons which kept our 4yo occupied for nearly 2 hours. The food was delicious - especially the salad with added chicken and baked cheese!

I came in at 11am, wasn't too busy i love the beautiful scenery this place had to offer it looked really good on the reviews. But I found the service of the waiter appalling. She must of been having a bad day but she served me without looking at me or acknowledging me. Made me feel really uncomfortable & not a place I could enjoy my food. Her demeanor ruined my day. Don't go here if your on holiday it may dampen your day also. Coffee was below average. I think this cafe in general gives off a dampening mood to it also. The waiter at the counter. He was very nice and helpful so I rate the atmosphere a 2 for his service. But food, coffee and the waiter I rate a 1. I travel full time around the world and this was by far my worst experience at a cafe!!!!

The server never came to our table to take down our order. It wasn't terribly busy. We had to walk over, after waiting at least 10 minutes, to ask when she would come to our table. To me, it shows a lack of attention and care. The food was good but service needs improvement and operate efficiently to have a overall good experience and rating for this bistro.

We were astonished when foods arrived, beautiful designated dishes. We ordered Lax open sandwich with tomato soup and carrots cake with cream. First is the sandwich, lax is fresh, the cream cheese apple salad on top is a plus, level up the texture, on top decorate with chips, red caviar added extra flavour and texture, toast was delicious with butter, the raspberry macaroon is not sweet (love it) with crispy skin^^ Next, the carrot cake is on my standard, perfect ratio of frosting + cake + cream, not as sweet as icelandic standard. I am very delighted to have meal here surrounded by plants, artworks and big windows with open-view. 🪴 They also have difference beverages and desserts, I will come back and try them all! 💚I definitely recommend this place to every of my friends and family. You can visit both the art museum and bistro as an afternoon date.

Great atmosphere, spacious, green friendly, full garden windows gets you enough light to have the comfort. Coffees are as expected, but can’t really say for the same for the cakes, would have been more delicious. Prices are medium range, there is also kid room for the ones who would interest to bring. Located at the heart of the Art Museum. Recommended!

Located in the heart of Reykjavik, Kaffibrennslan is a cozy and inviting cafe that transforms into a lively spot at night. During the day, it offers an array of sandwiches, soups, and coffee drinks. The second floor provides a charming loft area with window seating overlooking the bustling street below. In addition to their excellent coffees and pastries, they also serve beers, wines, and soft drinks.
The cafe is cozy and has many options in its menu. There’s many spots where you can have a seat and enjoy your coffee. Something nice and interesting is that you can find free postcards by the door. And lastly there’s happy hour as well.

Not to busy today when we visited. Nice cosy atmosphere and appeared very clean and staff courteous and friendly. Nice selection of pastries and nice nibbles. The flat white coffees were piping hot and tasty. The toilets were upstairs and 13 steps to overcome the obstacle. Couldn't find any Disabled toilets so beware if you are a wheelchair operator. Also to gain entry to this cafe there are 2 or 3 steps front or back and you would have to collapse your wheelchair as there are no ramps. This was the reason for only 4 stars rating, but if you can walk in it's well worth it. Outside on the pavement is a glass greenhouse with little tables for inclement weather but not sure regards access to wheelchair based customers.

Visited this location in October 2025. Cozy place with quite a few options for food and seating. Seating: inside and stairs, inside on main floor, outside in covered area. Food: nice amount of options, I got the Griskt jogurt that was very tasty. My wife got a croissant that was pleasant. Drinks: Good tea options, and the hot chocolate was delicious. Service team was kind and helpful. Would/will visit this location again. Thank you!

We went for something to breakfast and we tried croissant du chocolat and a cake with jam (don’t remember the name), we added one expresso double and one flat white, all was good enough, but the skyr (yogurt) definitely were THE best!! So I do strongly recommend try it. Place is super comfortable and nice, specially the second floor

Wake and Bake is a popular spot in Reykjavik known for its wide range of vegan pastries, including croissants, muffins, cookies, cakes, and more. The cafe also offers homemade cookies and fresh bagels throughout the day. Located in the city center, Wake and Bake attracts both locals and visitors with its delicious treats. Customers praise the friendly staff and cozy interior while recommending the PB & banana muffin as a must-try item on the menu.
Stopped in for a quick bite after seeing their sign for bagels!!! I love bagels and this place had some delicious ones! This adorable little coffee shop and bakery has indoor seating and gets crowded fast. The food was fabulous as were the drinks. The service here was stellar with a super cheery guy running the register. Cute decor, very clean, even the bathrooms are styled well. Great place for a snack or light meal if you're looking for a quick bite in Reykjavik.

The service was excellent and the staff was attentive. I was a bit surprised by the price compared to earlier menu photos, but they are not out of line for the area perhaps. Breakfast for 3, bagels and coffee were about 60 CAD. The first photo is an AI translation as of late 2025

Quick Grab and Go or Sit and Eat The coffe here is fantastic and the pastries are a delight. While my wife and I ordered cappuccinos and breakfast sandwiches, with a raspberry glazed roll. The pastry was soft, flaky, sweet and delicious. Well, the cappuccino and breakfast sandwiches were very well prepared. All in all a great dieting experience and close to the town center. Although all that was close to $60 USD, I think that just the cost here in Iceland. Would recommend.

Ugh the sad part is I can't visit this place once a week! That's what I do with my favorite bakery back home and this is excellent!! Chai latte is very good! I've been through iceland, London, Basel, Colmar, and Freiburg this week - hands down this was one of 3 cafes of the 20 cafes i visited this week that knew how to make a chai latte! You know it's good when a neighboring bakery says to come here! WORTH IT! And ugh, don't even get me started on this pistachio bun! I might have to take that and a cinnamon bun to go for my flight!

JOE & THE JUICE is a charming juice shop located in a convenient spot near the harbor. They offer a variety of delicious and refreshing options, such as power shakes and tunacados. The place may get crowded at times, but the lone worker efficiently handles everyone's orders without any delays. The seating area is clean and comfortable, creating a pleasant atmosphere for customers to enjoy their freshly made sandwiches, acai bowls, coffee, or juices/smoothies.
Stumbled into Joe & The Juice while exploring Reykjavik and it was such a good find. Trendy vibes, friendly staff, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to linger a little longer. My husband went for the Go Away Doc juice—super zesty and fresh with a nice ginger kick—while I had the Sports Juice, which was light, refreshing, and the perfect post-walk boost. We shared a blueberry muffin (soft, not too sweet, totally satisfying) and a slice of banana bread that was moist and comforting—like homemade, but better. We liked the juices so much we went back the next day. Great spot for a casual hangout or a mid-day pick-me-up. Definitely recommend if you're in the city and craving something fresh and tasty!

I came in for a quick breakfast. The eggcado was nice and filling. The matcha latte was really nice. Not sweet, which happens a lot. I liked it so much, I came back around lunchtime for another matcha latte and a shake. Food and drinks are served quite fast. Although there is no separate order/pick up, the system works fine.

The place is lively but very disorganized. The line was confusing, with people waiting for food and placing orders in the same spot, and only three staff handling everything. Tables were dirty and cleaned reluctantly when asked. Gluten-free options are not safe for celiacs — we had to cancel our order after noticing cross-contamination, and even the refund was incorrect at first. With better organization and more care, this restaurant could improve a lot.
Yuval N — Google review
$21 CAD for a dry sandwich with very little inside. Celiac friend couldn't eat here despite advertised gluten free items because the same grill is used.
Christina B — Google review
Smoothie and tea were not bad, but the place was dirty and messy, waiters were lazy, and instead of cleaning and organizing were just chatting. Personnel was too young and unprofessional, but surely very cheap. Manager must do great profit considering the excessive prices. Not recommended.

I was in Reykjavik for a conference that didn't offer gluten free food, so I ended up visiting Joe and the Juice each day for lunch. The staff were so lovely and welcoming, and it was a nice place to sit for a respite from the busy conference. I would happily come back any time I find myself in Iceland! Shout out to Yulia (or Julia, apologies for not knowing the spelling) for being so friendly each day on the till.

Drink was amazing! However did not appreciate the guy at the counter with an earring scoffing and laughing at me to his little coworker for... being a foreigner I assume? after I had told him my (obviously non-Icelandic) name. Not sure why you'd work in a downtown area where there's lots of tourists on the daily if it's such a problem. 🤷‍♀️ You go for a good drink and not to be treated as a human by the baristas I suppose! Would recommend a different location if you're determined to come here.

I had the spicy tuna on gluten free bread and it was very good! Gluten free bread in American restaurants is not always that yummy, so I wasn't expecting much but this bread was delicious. I thought the Red Supreme smoothie was just okay, but my partner really liked it. He also enjoyed the turkey sandwich (on regular bread) and the Power smoothie.

Kaffi Lækur is a local café in Reykjavik that offers a variety of food and drinks. The café has different corners divided by colors, including a kids' corner. The portions are generous but slightly pricey compared to other local cafes. Despite this, the staff provides excellent service and accommodates customer preferences when needed.

We waited for lunch on a Monday about an hour for 3 burgers, with only a couple people having ordered in front of us. But despite that food was cold when it came, kids burger was a tiny paty on a huge bun with a giant soggy tomato sauce bun, and it said it came with sweet potato fries but they were not and they were also cold and stale. We were hopeful because it's cute and they have a little family corner but we most certainly should have gone else where. Too much money for bad food.

I ordered carrotcake w/cream, it was moist and tasty, i will say its on average but the price is slightly high with overall experience. (compare with other local café) see below. They have different corners divided by colours. Very sweetly they have a kids corner, however kids are still running around with noise and the light was a bit dark there (not romantic type), therefore someone spilled drinks, and you can imagine the place was not that tidy. To sum up, maybe this is a place for family but not students or couples that want good conversation. P.s. You can book a long table or half of the venue for group event. I hope my experience here was not usual.

Make sure to keep in mind that the Brunch Vegan Omelette is a pancake and doesn’t have the filling exactly as listed in the menu. I thought I got the wrong order but the worker told me this is how they do the omelette. Apart from that this is a nice place and I would still come back.

The recent reopening of the cafe has been met with satisfaction as they serve decent cheeseburgers within minutes.
A true delight! I rate our breakfast at this wonderful deli 5 stars! We are from the US and have not found a breakfast with eggs and bacon in Iceland, so Steinar quickly made what we were looking for. He delivered a generous plate of eggs with cheese, bacon and toast. (Translated by Google) The bagels are delicious (I loved the Parma Ham) as are the smoothies (I love the healthy Green) and the coffee... it is a quiet, beautiful and cozy place, you should visit it because it is worth it... now they have better prices (lower) with the same quality (Original) Los bagels son deliciosos (me encanto el Parma Ham) al igual que los smothies (ame el healthy Green) y el café ... es un lugar tranquilo, hermoso y acogedor, deben visitarlo pues vale la pena ... ahora tienen mejores precios (mas bajos) con la misma calidad
