The Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Museum of Contemporary Art, MonET is a modern exhibition space that features art and illustrations. It has a central pool, a cafe, and onsen baths. The museum is known for hosting events like symposiums and the Echigo Tsumari Art Festival. Visitors can enjoy local natural ingredients in the lunch box offered at the museum's restaurant. The architecture of the museum is impressive, and it also offers an outdoor pool with beautiful views.
Really worth going! And the pool has become a maze at snowing winter~~ I love the art work with endlessly dropping ink and dragonfly-like clocks! Very creative and impressive!

It's worth visiting by train, you need to be careful about the timetable since Iiyama Line only goes one way. There's an onsen on the same building so you can pretty much spend all day in here.

Went on a weekend, there wasn’t a lot of people but the exhibition is interesting and fun to walk through. The place is very quiet and it is a good getaway from the heat.

Interesting place for the Echigo Tsumari Art Festival. We came here on the first day of the festival, obviously some art installations were not yet set up. But still had some great artworks to share and experience.

Historical landmark
The Tokamachi Snow Festival, known as the "現代雪まつり発祥の地," is an annual event held in February in the City of Tokamachi. The festival features impressive snow sculptures created by local residents, depicting popular cartoon characters and cultural figures.
(Translated by Google) I go to the snow festival every year. In addition to exhibiting snow sculptures by region, they also sell konnyaku made from konnyaku sweet potatoes and specialty products, as well as yakisoba, yakitori, pork soup, roasted sweet potatoes, amazake, and more, so it's fun to look around and try some of them. The local people will welcome you warmly. There are also rest areas where you can get coffee and sweet sake for free. There are also buses that take you around the area at low cost from the station. In addition to seeing the snow sculptures, there is also a corner where you can play on slides and tubes, so everyone from adults to children can have fun.

(Translated by Google) I went there for the first time and was disappointed as it seemed to have lost the luxury it had a few years ago. The main venue only had stalls and a simple stage, and there was only one bus every hour to see the works, so I ended up taking a taxi, but it was too crowded. I couldn't quite understand why the works were scattered all over the place. I understand that it's a local festival, but now that we've lost the flower stage, I think people who come from far away won't be able to understand it unless we gather the works in the main venue a little more.

(Translated by Google) I went to the Tokamachi Snow Festival with my kids. I left in the morning, got off at Echigo Yuzawa, and tried to take the Hokuhoku line to Tokamachi, but it was too crowded and I couldn't get on. Moreover, I can't use Suica. I took the train an hour later and arrived before noon. There are snow sculptures scattered throughout the city, and if you go there thinking of the Sapporo Snow Festival, you will be disappointed. It is impossible to see everything with children. The Hokuhoku Line on the way back was also full and did not run on time. I was barely able to buy any souvenirs as I was barely on time for the Shinkansen return. Am I the only one who feels inconvenienced by transportation? Even though they do it every year, they don't seem to want to improve. I would like you to consider transportation methods other than the Hokuhoku Line.

(Translated by Google) I went to see snow sculptures, but there were none near Tokamachi Station. It is necessary to travel a considerable distance by bus (for a fee) to the venue. I took the JR train to Shimojo Station, two stations away, and saw the snow sculptures at the Inaka Hiroba venue. 2025 will be the worst year, with the skeletons sticking out and the snow on the snow sculptures looking dirty due to rising temperatures.

Bijin Bayashi Forest is a serene natural area in the mountains of Tokamachi, offering picturesque walking routes through woods known for their stunning autumn leaf colors and winter snowscapes. Accessible by bus or car, this tranquil forest is a perfect spot to relax and immerse yourself in nature's beauty. The bright green leaves of the beech trees create a breathtaking view, contrasting with their dappled grey trunks.
A very calm place among the trees. You can walk freely and take photos as you please. Make sure to not to slip and fall into the pond. It can be a little slippery if it had rained earlier.
Bhanuka S — Google review
Came here on 2 Dec and the leaves have mostly all fallen, but the place is still beautiful. Not a big area but still pretty serene and enjoyable!

Tranquil forest. Worth the drive out here to soak in nature. Also unexpectedly, Great spot for mushroom spotting. Don't eat them. Many are poisonous
Norris C — Google review
This is the furthest I can go by the Google. The snow is like 6m height and you won’t be able to go to there.
Ms L — Google review
A beautiful place worth a visit. Took slightly longer time and more effort to walk around the forest during winter time due to thick snow. But the scenery are quite impressive with all the trees are almost identical in height.

Enjoying a beautiful beechwood forest trekking at the Bijin Hayashi, Tokamachi, Niigata. The reason Forest Bath allows you to relax is because the minus ions, that are in a forest, give people's bodies energy.

Echigo-Tsumari Art Field is a significant part of the Echigo-Tsumari region, hosting the renowned Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale. This festival, held every three years since 2000, showcases various projects aimed at utilizing art to uncover and communicate the region's assets and revitalize it. The area offers unique art installations in its picturesque countryside setting, providing an immersive experience for visitors.
We took a road trip to Nagano and Niigata. We enjoyed all the places we visited and the highlight of our trip was visiting the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field. This was an outdoor art exhibit. We bought our tickets online then when we got there we received a passport that showed all the places where the art was located all over Niigata. We only saw maybe a quarter of the exhibits but it was so cool to see everything. Some of the exhibits were art pieces others were interact houses/museum type exhibits. We’ve never been to anything like this and it was so cool. Note you do need a car because the exhibits are very spread out.
Liz W — Google review
We were here in the winter, so the art was not in the field. Beautiful area, though!

(Translated by Google) Visited on October 27, 2024. The five-member Intelligent-chan group from college meets once a year, this time at the Echigo-Tsumari Art Festival. What on earth is this? The hanging laundry at the lift station is art. Maybe it's a pillowcase, but there were two orange tents nearby, but the tents don't seem to have anything to do with the Gejutsu Festival, maybe? I hung up my tattered Uniqlo pants to dry at home, but they were also stained. What on earth should I feel? Since I'm exhibiting something, am I making a statement or do I want people to feel something? Is it just smugness or is it OK for contemporary art to be anything that is different, something that has never existed before, or something that is rare? ? ? . One of the Intelligen-chan says that in Japanese, art and art are different, but art can be anything. To be honest, I don't really understand. Artificial objects in the grass. It's a foreign object, I can't feel any emotions. I have no impressions. There are ruins of a castle on top of the mountain, so I offer to go there. I agree too. No one has any regrets about watching Gejutsu, and no one is impressed by it. If you say something, you'll get beat up by the other four, all of them are cautious, and the intelligentsia-chans are smart. I'm not saying it's good or bad. The road leading to the castle ruins has disappeared into the bushes, and it is unclear where the castle ruins are. Where will contemporary art go? The road is in the bush (Original)

We arrived 15.30 and after buying tickets we had to hurry and start from the castle (drove the car up hill then walked) which closes at 16.00. Then drove down passing other outdoor arts before visiting the main building art the follows by another smaller building near by exhibiting traditional stories.

(Translated by Google) You can park your car here and see the rice fields and Yayoi Kusama. Everyone here is kind. Pencil is about a minute's drive from here. When I asked this person, he said the road was wide, so I parked near the pencil and took a photo. Can you reach the summit from this information center? On the hill? It is said that there is a variety of art up to the castle. It seems that about two pieces of art will be added at each art festival. Since it was a weekday and not during the exhibition period, there were no people at all. The 清津峡渓谷トンネル, or Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel, is a breathtaking destination that offers visitors an unforgettable experience. Nestled in the stunning landscape of Niigata Prefecture, this tunnel provides access to some of Japan's most picturesque views. As you walk through the tunnel, you'll be treated to mesmerizing sights of the gorge and its surrounding natural beauty.
Name of attraction: Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel of Light: Duration of stay: day trip. Driving direction: we drove from Echigo Yugawa which took about an hour. Parking: ample parking, open area, free. Highlight: This tunnel is well covered with ample space for both young and old. There are a number of wheelchairs at the entrance provided free to visitor. The ground is flat, and the tunnel inside is cooling. It was raining when we arrived. We were happy to enjoy the walk inside, fulling sheltered. The first exhibition was sound. Followed by four view spots which was called Platform. First platform was a simpler one. The second platform was impressive, with a black and white line painted from ground to ceiling. In the middle there’s a metal dome shape structure. And there were two toilets inside! It’s the first time that we see toilets as part of the exhibit. Third platform was color for droplets lights. Finally the last platform was the highlight of the whole tunnel. It’s a super beautiful water reflection of the tunnel. Visitor can walk on both sides of the tunnel towards the edge to get a nice reflection shots. The water in the middle is deeper so dont want into it and get your shoe wet. Overall, will i come back again? YES! The tunnel is 750m in length. To and fro will be 1.5km. The ground is flat, it’s covered and cooling, with a fantastic art installation, blendi nicely with the nature.

A little pricey for being a bit off the beaten path, but it's a cool area to visit. According to the signage (lots in English), it was a declining tourist attraction before they turned it into a sort of art exhibit. We arrived at midday on a weekday and had to park in the #3 overflow lot and take a shuttle to the entrace. It's quite dark in the tunnels, and also wet in some areas, so take caution if you have any difficulty walking. There are 4 vista points inside the tunnel; three are art installations and one is just normal. There are cafes and shops outside.

The Tokamachi City Museum TOPPAKU is a must-visit for history and culture enthusiasts. Despite concerns about the lack of English resources, the museum pleasantly surprised visitors by providing English pamphlets and signs. The exhibits were detailed and fascinating, offering insights into life in a snowy region. This well-made museum showcases an abundance of artifacts that beautifully represent the local history, including Jomo stonewares that are surprisingly stunning.
Love the architecture of this museum! All the permanent exhibits are on the ground floor under 3 categories, namely cloth, snow and pottery. There are pottery national treasures in the exhibits, the flame pots. Exhibition is very well done and interactive with very well made miniatures. Entry ticket is 500¥ It is about 15min walk from Tokamachi station. Exhibition has good English translation so that’s a big bonus.

I visited this Museum as a part of my study tour at Niigata. The Museum is beautifully decorated with 1500 years old flame style potary. The key attractions for me were digital visit of Hunting and gathering age, the family life of Japan in Niigata city during Heavy snowfall and video documentary... Highly recommended for visiting

An excellent museum to visit, it worth the trip. They have many national treasures on display and they are all exquisite. Other displays are interesting too. I wish I had more time here. You can spend all day if you like Jomon era things. As some of the Jomon Doki was on lease and I could not view, I will definitely returning here.

GALA Yuzawa Snow Resort is located in Niigata Prefecture, offering a variety of scenic trails for skiing and snowboarding. The resort has its own bullet train station, making it easily accessible from Tokyo Station. With 15 runs and nine lifts, it provides options for skiers of all levels. After a day on the slopes, visitors can relax in the spa area with an onsen and unisex swimming pool.
Went for a day trip from Tokyo during the start-of-spring public holiday. Quite a few trains were nearly complete but could reserve still a place a day in advance. Once at the last stop of Gala, all was very well organised. Bought ski pass in 5 minutes, despite a full train decending just upstairs from the train station. Then ordered online at a kiosk my skis and boots, paid with credit card. Highlighted expert skier but think that related to the settings of the ski bindings, not the skis itself - they were very basic Fischer skis, felt plastic with no stability of edges. Better check for advanced skis if available... Then able to book a cheap locker at another kiosk and drop all stuff and normal shoes. And then take the gondola up, ski sticks you take yourself at exit of top gondola. Very easy all in all! Over 3m of snow, there was a new dump the day before, excellent sun, everything open, the black slopes were not groomed. Very nice for a day!!
Peter C — Google review
This snow/ski resort, is accessible for everyone even you are not doing ski. The ticket price for gondola, not too pricey. But, if you only want to play snow, maybe this is not for you. In fact, you can play snow outside the door near the rental area, with barely no one there. (No need to ride the gondola). There were too many people, and it can be dangerous if you are not aware of the ski-people. Even the parking space was full, and we need to find ourselves a parking spot, 15 minutes walking from the entrance. But still, there are many things to do other than skiing that you can choose. We were so lucky to have a snowfalls! But still, it was a good experience for all of us, especially me, who loves Japan the most.
DIYANA R — Google review
A very ideal ski resort that is accessible via Tokyo. If you are looking for a nearby ski experience near Tokyo, this is the place. Can get very crowded on some parts but there are also some places here that are not crowded. All in all a good place and would recommend.

If you’re around Tokyo, if you can squeeze it in on your itinerary, please do. This is an amazing place! Winter Wonderland indeed. We went there around February this year. Be prepared with winter clothes. There are rental gears inside, but you can also bring your own. 🤍

Great ski/snowboard resort for beginners to intermediates. Access from Tokyo’s amazing (walk right off the Shinkansen to the resort, pick up your rental gear, then walk to life and go!) Views are beautiful and slopes are not so crowded on weekdays. Try to cafe which is on the edge of the slopes and is a great spot to take a break.

Lots of fun with family. Rent 2 sledges for a family. We spend 3-4 hours over here. If you wanna play snow. You better rent weather proof suit and rubber boots. Train from Ueno to Gala YUZAWA is convenient and easy. Trip start 8am it takes only 1 hr to arrive at Gala YUZAWA. Buy ticket and equipment rental take around 20-30 mins. Gondola will take around 10-12 mins to get the ski mountain. It’s a good place to visit even though you don’t ski. My kid really like to play here.
Vorapoj T — Google review
We had a good experience at Gala Yuzawa Snow Resort. As soon as we arrived at the station, there were people guiding tourists were to buy tickets. On the same floor, there are counters where you get your gondola and lift tickets. If you won’t be skiing, like us, you just need a gondola ticket and you will be able to go up and down as many times as you want during the day. The ride takes just a few minutes. We had big bag packs and left them at the station because it’s the only place where they have big lockers. We rented moon bikes at the top, they give you a helmet with a camera. When the activity ends, they give you a QR code so you can download your video.
Diosemil S — Google review
GALA is easily accessible via shuttle from Echigo Yuzawa Station at Platform 5 (take the orange line). If you are not a local, don't worry because everything would be available in various languages as well. For example, if you are there to rent anything, forget the fear of being unable to communicate with the staff on what you want including your sizes etc. They have self-selection stations that allows you to pick and choose what you'd like to rent from sets to ala carte if you happen to bring some of your own gear eg. snowboarding wear etc. Prices are very friendly as well, with the snowboarding board, boots and helmet at a friendly 8500 yen, and a half-day, one-day lift ticket at 6500 yen. Be prepared to be greeted by powder snow with a variety of narrow and wide slopes. I was here on a Saturday in January but in the peak afternoon it wasn't that crowded at all on the wide slopes and you could still snowboard comfortably. Be wary though, the slopes may be a little steep for first-timers so do find an area to grasp the basics first. Love the big space, friendly prices and fast services. Cheers GALA!

Matsudai Nohbutai Center is a unique architectural gem that resembles a Russian space station, set in a stunning natural environment. The center offers an excellent cafe with appealing interior design and local cuisine. Visitors can explore the nearby Matsudai castle ruins and enjoy panoramic views of the rice fields. The center features an impressive collection of artworks integrated into the landscape, including modern art exhibits from the Echigo-Tsumari art projects.
Good hospitality and buffet service. The view here is incredible. I really like the buffet. Many different vegetables from local and taste great.

Visited on a very hot day. Apart from art works, I had a buffet lunch there. Mostly veggies dishes but still got kara-age. I particularly loved the bitter melon, good for summertime. If U visit after 12 noon, the restaurant can be crowded. U can buy advanced ticket on their website.

Really nice collection of artworks in nature. There are also great attractions for kids (climbing wall, slides etc.) in the center itself and around it. You can go up to the remains of Matsudai castle and look over the rice fields in you are with a car.

Train station
Echigo Yuzawa Station is a convenient stop on the Joetsu Shinkansen line, easily accessible from Tokyo. It's renowned for its natural hot springs and has become a popular ski destination due to its accessibility from Tokyo. The station serves as the main gateway to the area and offers various activities year-round, including hiking, camping, skiing, and snowboarding. Additionally, it's a confluence of the Shinkansen train and local train network in Niigata.
A day trip from Tokyo to explore Yuzawa offers a quick getaway, just 70 minutes from Tokyo Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen Toki. This train is faster than the Tanigawa, making fewer stops along the way. Inside the station is CoCoLo Yuzawa, a plaza with a variety of shops & restaurants offering local specialties. Next to it is Ponshukan Marketplace, specializing in a diverse range of Niigata food & sake — an excellent spot for picking up souvenirs. Just outside the station’s West Exit is Echigo Yuzawa Onsen Street, a charming area lined with shops & restaurants, perfect for experiencing the town’s hot spring culture.

It's good station, I went to Echigo Yuzawa from Otorii Station, just to see snow. There are many seller here to buy some merchandise
Muhammad P — Google review
I've passed through this station three times now (all in the summer), and while small, it has a lot of stuff to do. There's a huge area with gacha capsule toys, several restaurants, a really long area filled with souvenir shops, and even the sake onsen. Lots of accommodation in the town, and it's really easy to walk around outside on foot (in the summer).
Grant M — Google review
Steam rises from rooftops; snow falls like feathers. Yuzawa hums with laughter and clinking sake cups — the warmth of strangers sharing winter. The train rests here longer, as if to taste the hot spring air. Tourist Tip: Famous ski and onsen town. Station has Sake Museum “Ponshukan” with tasting stations. Excellent overnight for snow or autumn leaves. Try onsen eggs and rice crackers.
Stray L — Google review
Easy access to the snow & ski resorts around. The station has good connectivity through multiple options of bullet trains - Shinkansen, shuttling between Tokyo and Niigata. The station building is accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. Also, there is a beautiful food and souvenirs area inside the station, a convenience store too. Right outside the front of the station is a hot water feet dipping place.
TAHIR C — Google review
Best places to go see snow if you want to go by Shinkansen. The only snow resort next to a shinkansen station. Only 2 hours from Tokyo and very easy to reach to. Also Genbi Shinkansen starts from here to Niigata which is an amazing art-sy kind of Shinkansen so it is fast but every compartment is designed by a different designer so it makes the ride fun as well. Highly recommended to go there. If you don't want to ski and just see snow conveniently from Tokyo, this is easy and faster way to reach. Also the station has souvenir shops and snow gear for rental of you do plan to go skiing. Lockers are available to keep your stuff if you want to just go out for fun. Food is also extensively available. Great place.
Pankaj R — Google review
This station is the confluence of Shinkansen train (bullet train) and also the local train network in Niigata. The local train network in Niigata does not have automated gantry for stored value cards, eg seca. Stored value card can be used to purchase single trip tickets at the machine. When entering to the platforms, passengers need to show the ticket at the ticket counter to receive a stamp. Upon arrival, to present the stamped ticket to the ticket counter and will be collected. So it is still manual. The Shinkansen has its own automated gantry for its tickets. The station has a big area of duty free shopping for the local produce in Niigata. There is also a visitor information centre and postal service. There is a cafe with bakes and also a standing noodle bar. A convenient store is also present.
Trotting H — Google review
Train station with lots of restaurants and shops selling local produce. The ponshukan (sake shop) with many sake vending machines is a popular novelty though kids are not allowed. Free shuttle busses to various ski hotels and taxis are available just outside. A few restaurants too.

(Translated by Google) It takes less than an hour by car from Nagaoka Station. It feels great at the perfect distance. Even when I used the navigation system, I didn't find the turning points to be too complicated, so I would recommend this hot spring resort to beginners like me. By the way, the price gets a little cheaper after 6pm, so it might be a good deal if you know that. About hot springs. There is an open-air bath where you can enjoy two different hot springs. You can enjoy the tranquil scenery of the foothills from the open-air bath at the back, and spend a relaxing time enjoying the cool evening breeze. As the sun goes down, the lights of cars and houses shine, creating a beautiful sight that looks just like the stars above. I visited four hot springs around Nagaoka, but this one had the best view from the open-air bath. However, when I saw people getting tattoos even though they were prohibited, I thought it was just a pose. Also, the store clerk is unfriendly, which is probably the main point. I think it's a nice hot spring.

There were a lot of customers, but the spaciousness meant it didn't feel cramped, and we were even able to relax on the low chairs on the walkway shown in the photo. The baths and changing rooms were spacious, so it wasn't damp after a bath and it was easy to get changed. The main baths and indoor baths were both spacious, the cold water bath wasn't too cold, and the flowing water bath had a nice flow that hit the waist and soles of the feet, making it very comfortable after a race. 😺 There were about 10 other people in the open-air bath ♨️, but it didn't feel cramped, and it was nice to be able to enjoy the view of the Uono River below. There's a flat area a little further back where you can take a half-body bath, so you can also lie down in the open-air bath. I'll definitely return. Thank you very much.

Additionally, the building itself is part of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field project, offering a unique experience for visitors.
A very nice place to learn about different animals living in the forest area. You have to buy tickets from the machine at the entrance. Unfortunately no english is available. But the staff would come and help even without asking. One of the staff even recommended several other places to visit as well. You can climb to the top viewing area, but the climb can be tiring, be careful. Vending machines and toilets are available at the parking area.

Great collection of butterflies... stunning to see them all in one place !
Tom K — Google review
This is a really good place to take kids. The building itself is part of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field project. You can climb the tall tower and get a good view from the big windows at the top. It's a 160 step staircase though and is hardly lit as it is also one of the art projects. The inside of the center is full of interesting items related to the local nature and countryside. There are snakes, frogs and fish close by and you can fish for crayfish in small ponds. There are stuffed examples of the local bird-life and an amazing collection of butterflies. The windows are made of a really think material and in winter you can see the deep snow piling up against it. There is a visual representation of the snowfall over the past decade or so which is very interesting. There is also a restaurant and a craft area where you can try your hand a making different objects out of objects scavenged from the nearby woods and fields. Perhaps our favorite thing were over 100 little drawers containing all sorts of different things related to the local environment - snake skins, bird nests, insects.

(Translated by Google) I went there for lunch on a weekend. The origin of Kyororo is explained in the quiz at the entrance, but it was fun enough for adults too, and would be even more fun if I brought children. From the entrance, there were many living creatures, especially a wide variety of frogs. There were also snakes, salamanders, fish, etc. The highlight was the butterfly specimens. I was mesmerized by the vibrant colors. By the way, the rust-proof stainless steel pins used in the specimens apparently took 20 years to develop. That's an incredible amount of passion and dedication. At the back, there is an observation deck with 160 steps to climb, and the view was spectacular. I descended the stairs out of breath, thinking of the rice terraces of Niigata. It's a great place to learn about the local creatures and plants, including the explanation of Bijinbayashi.

Yuzawa Museum of History and Folklore Yukiguni-kan is a small yet fascinating museum located in the heart of Yuzawa. Housed in a traditional gabled farmhouse made of keyaki wood, it was established around 1935 and showcases artifacts from Jomon period sites, old folk tools, equipment, and even a fossil Calyptogena dating back 4 million years.
A must-visit place if you’ve read Kawabata Yasunari’s novel Snow Country. The scenes from the book came vividly to mind — this is the very heart of Echigo-Yuzawa.

A wonderful small museum that tells the history of Yugawa area and part of the livelihood of the Novel Prize Laureate, Kawabata Yasunari. The bestseller, Yukigini (Snow Country) , he wrote was based on his romance with a lady here. The museum has outlined this story and his life of literature. Lift tickets are incredibly cheap, and ski rentals are surprisingly cheap as well. At the center house, scoots and airboats were rented at low prices. (Translated by Google) Lift fees are quite cheap compared to others. Courses are divided into advanced and beginner sections. It seems like there is no intermediate course. Perhaps because it was the beginning of the season, it was difficult to see the poles, etc., and there was a risk of suddenly running into uncompacted snow outside the course. Many people actually fell down. (Myself included) There is no deceleration when entering the lift, so first-timers should be careful. I think the cost performance is good considering the price. Yukitsubaki's meat miso ramen is exquisite, and the course was empty, so I was satisfied with eating uncompacted snow powder for 2,000 yen for a 4-hour ticket. The downside is that there isn't much space in front of the second lift landing at the top, so you have to dodge to the left and right, and if you're a bad boarder, you might end up running into the fence in front of you. It seems that people also sleep in tents, and there were quite a few tent sites when I visited. [2024/2 added] The other day, I visited on February 18th (Sunday) for meat miso ramen and snowboarding. Was it because there was a tournament going on? The parking lot was full to the back and there was street parking all the way to the front road. However, there were no guides and the train stopped in a chaotic manner. I managed to find one space in the back and parked there, but some cars with local plates stopped blocking the exit, so it took me a while to get out. I think they should have a parking attendant on the days when it gets really crowded. I can't say that the locals have good parking manners either, so I'll deduct one star. Scenic spot
Tashiro no Nanatsugama is a captivating destination nestled in Tokamachi city, alongside other historical gems like Chotokuji Temple and Suwa Shrine. As you enter Nanatsugama Park, you'll find convenient amenities such as parking and restrooms. The park features stunning columnar joints that are a sight to behold. While the trail leading to Benten Falls is currently closed for construction, visitors can still enjoy breathtaking views from an observation area above the falls.

(Translated by Google) When you enter Nanatsugama Park, the parking lot and toilet are on the right side. Campsite facilities are on the left. If you go further, you will see a structure called an observation parking lot. There are parts of the slope that have collapsed due to Typhoon No. 19 in 2019, and the walking path has collapsed, so it is not possible to go from Nanatsugama Park to Bentendo. When I visited, I passed the Nanatsugama Campsite and parked at a fairly large observation parking lot. From there, go down the stairs to the observation plaza, and you can see part of Nanatsugama below. If you look down from above, you won't be able to see the whole thing because it's in a halfway position. However, the thin columnar joints that appear to be arranged in regular order spread out before your eyes and are worth seeing. Some website says that in order to see the waterfall up close, you need to walk down a steep slope, so I wonder if it's possible to go near the waterfall basin from the direction of Bentendo. I wasn't able to go to Bentendo this time, but if it's restored when I'm nearby, I'd definitely like to stop by. The Kama River, which is dotted along the Kama River mountain stream that flows from the Naeba Mountains, is a series of seven waterfalls and waterfall basins spanning approximately 1 km, and has been designated as a nationally designated scenic spot and natural monument. The geology in this area is Neogene andesite, and the andesite has well-developed columnar joints. The left bank of the Kama River has vertical layers, while the right bank has cross-sectional layers, making this a very unusual landscape even from an academic point of view. Because andesite is hard, and because of its columnar joints, it is vulnerable to mechanical damage, which led to the formation of waterfalls and the formation of a giant waterfall basin underneath. Columnar joints develop in various directions, from vertical to horizontal, and these changes seem to play a role in the formation of waterfalls and basins. These waterfalls are Benten Falls, Ninotaki Falls, and Fudo Falls from upstream. It is called Nakano Falls, Maki Falls, Kannon Falls, and Mitarai Falls. The waterfall basins (pots) range in depth from approximately 1.5 meters to 6.3 meters, and Fudo Falls, which has the largest depth and area, is said to have been built in ancient times because a man broke his promise to Benten and cast a net. Apparently, the ``Legend of the Seven Pots'' is said to have been told that he lost his life after angering the serpent that was the owner of the waterfall basin. The entire waterfall collapsed due to a landslide in 1995, but restoration work was carried out, and in the fall of 1997, Japan's first sabo dam made of pseudo-rocks was completed, and the current form is a restoration close to the waterfall before the collapse. It seems to be the condition. In addition, the Nanatsugama Festival is held every year in mid-July, and the traditional performing art of Tashiro Kagura is performed. Before coming here, I also stopped by Kiyotsu Gorge, but I felt that this was a much more spectacular view in terms of admiring the columnar joints. If you are planning to visit Kiyotsu Gorge, you should definitely visit this place. Perhaps because it was late, or because there were no regular visitors, there were no people around, so I was able to enjoy the view at my leisure.

I didn't feel that hot while I was walking, but when I arrived and sat down to rest, I started to sweat. To enter the castle, you need to purchase a ticket for the Matsudai Nohbutai Field Museum, which costs 1,200 yen for adults and 600 yen for elementary and junior high school students. At the Matsudai Nohbutai Field Museum, you can view all the facilities and art works, but since I only stopped by briefly, I didn't buy a ticket and only viewed the works with the view that I had always admired. We stayed three nights in January. The room is spacious but a bit old and required renovation. Dinner, bkf and lift pass are included. Food variety is limited (no sushi) but when considering the price, it is as expected. The major problem are the ski ground. There is insufficient signage to show direction, and you dont know what level of slope the liftchair will take you to. There are insufficient chairs for you to change boots. Three persons share one locker with only one key. Overall, the hotel is okay for the price charged but the ski facilities needs some improvement.

90% of the time spent on ski lifts than actually skiing. Not worth it. Our legs and knees hurt because none of the ski lifts have footrest like in Europe. If you’re gonna make people sit on ski lifts all day at least have footrest. Most of the ski lifts also don’t have safety bar. It’s a beautiful resort but it has the strangest layout where to get somewhere you need 2 even 3 connecting ski lifts. Worst part other than the non existent footrest is the fact that the ski lifts are extremely slow. Slowest ski lifts in the world. Better to ski somewhere else.

A good resort for beginners and strong intermediate skiers. Very old school. Lifts tend to be a bit slow, and the layout is quite annoying, with a long transition from the front part of the resort and the rather nice hinterland. Scenery is very pretty, the broad layout providing beautiful views. Showing its age but definitely worth a visit.

I'm going to be honest. The resort itself is outdated and in need of a remodel. If that does not bother you, it is a nice stay. The buffets are okay. The snow itself was beautiful and the family had a great time sledding and skiing. The beginner hills kind of lead to advanced ones. Hard to learn if it's busy. Overall a fun trip.

A super spectacular view. Just make sure you get there right as it opens or there is a potential of you standing in line for over an hour inside of the tunnel to see the very end. In my opinion it is not worth standing in the line just for a photo opportunity. If you choose not to wait in line you can walk past line to take a picture of the end of the tunnel. There is a shuttle that takes you back and forth to the parking lot on top of the hill however, it is quite the weight in between pick up and drop off.

Beautiful place with more natural scenery. Entrry fee 800 . You will be walking inside tunnel for 800m and at the end you will be seeing this valley view point. Now due to corona registration is required.buy tickets at 7/11 or online in advance
DINESH K — Google review
This place is nothing but a tourist trap for people who want to do the influencer photo at the end. The views of the gorge outside the tunnel are better than inside. Any enjoyment of the experience is counteracted by the ¥1000 entry fee. Nature should be freely accessible to all. And outside of the nature all you get is random fun house mirrors and tables, a one way window toilet for some reason, and a reflection pool. You may as well just go on a real hike and spend the 1.5km actually being able to see stuff. I would only recommend it to huge fans of dark tunnels who want to see where the local SCPs are kept.

Hoshitouge Terraced Rice Field is a picturesque location featuring tiered, rolling terraces that are perfect for photography. These terraced fields are designed for farming on steep slopes and controlling water flow, preserving traditional agricultural methods and regional specialties. The site is popular among tourists due to its scenic and cultural value. Visitors recommend visiting at sunrise during the right season to witness the misty view depicted in posters.
Breathe-taking in the summer when the fields are a vivid green. There are little places to park on the road.

Beautiful terraced rice fields This place is famous for its beautiful terraced rice fields. From web site Terraced fields are a form of rice field mainly used in mountainous areas. They are built to allow farming on steep slopes and to control water flow. It is also a popular tourist destination due to its scenic and cultural value. They are also important for preserving regional specialties and traditional agricultural methods.

100% worth coming here, the view of the rice terraces and surrounding hills/mountains is absolutely amazing. I recommend renting an e-bike from Matsudai station and biking here. It's a quick 30-40 minute ride and you can see some nice scenery on the way as well.

Has been my favourite place to come to and photograph the rice terraces. The sunrise here is absolutely magical. However I must say that I am absolutely appalled by how loud and unmannered many japanese are. It's understandable that children are yet to learn to control their voice, but a grown person should be fully capable of doing so. Is it really necessary to shout the obvious to each other over and over disrupting the peaceful moments? Getting in front of the your camera with blatant disregard and then prancing about is seriously obnoxious. Doesn't matter if you token apologise and slightly bow - it doesn't make you well mannered, rather quite the opposite. I see many reviewes of landmarks always mentioning foreigners being loud, however it's japanese who has bad manners themselves in the first place! Shame!!

Nestled in the picturesque Echigo-Tsumari region, the Hachi & Seizo Tashima Museum of Picture Book Art is a delightful transformation of an old elementary school into a vibrant art gallery. This unique museum showcases enchanting exhibits that spark imagination and creativity, making it a must-visit for families and art enthusiasts alike. The charming on-site café adds to the experience, featuring furniture crafted from repurposed school materials and serving delicious dishes made with local produce.
This is my favorite place during my 4-day trip in Echigo Tsumari. With much visual impactful exhibits, here also provides a meaningful back story and provokes visitor for further imagination during and after the adventure.

An old school turned into an art gallery/museum sort of a thing. It's a bit of a long drive from the city area. The staff at the reception was friendly and spoke a little english to help us. There is a cafe inside as well. Outside you can see some goats and can play around with the water fountain kinda structure.

After seeing photos of this museum in a magazine, I decided on a whim to take a brief stop (using the Hokuriku Arch JR pass, which connects Tokyo to Osaka and includes cities like Kanazawa and Itoigawa along the northern coast) and I’m glad I did. The town is peaceful so if you don’t mind the walk it’s only about 30 minutes from the train station. The building itself is incredible, standing on its own in a spacious rock garden and resembling desert ruins. The interior is designed to showcase a series of Buddhist sculptures with natural and artificial lighting that create beautiful shadows which I'm sure alter the display in interesting ways with different times of day, weather, or seasons. Everyone working there was friendly, and unfortunately I had to catch a train so I wasn’t able to check out the garden but it looked beautiful from its entrance.

It's hard to describe the Tanimura Art Museum without sounding hyperbolic... It's something that needs to be experienced. Seiko Sawada's beautifully sculpted Buddhist iconography merged seamlessly into the organic, almost sensuous curves of Togo Murano's distinctive architecture. It's a unique fusion of two of Japan's greatest artistic minds, the likes of which you would never expect to find in a town as small as Itoigawa. If you're in Itoigawa and not visiting this museum, you're seriously missing out. The adjoining Gyokusuien Garden can be enjoyed from a small pavilion which also features a cafe and gift shop. The tables in the pavilion are carved from massive slabs of Itoigawa's famous jade.

"The Last Classroom" is located in the Matsunoyama area within the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale region. It offers a unique sensory experience with light and sound in a dark room, creating an immersive atmosphere. Visitors may encounter an old man tending to the surroundings as there is no reception desk. The former school setting adds to the eerie ambiance, making it feel like a haunted house at times.
I was browsing google maps on my drive route and this popped up. I was so curious so I went there. I was the only one there for a while. It has a spooky vibe because the building is dark so all your other senses are heightened. It was an interesting experience and I recommend to go.

We came on a Friday at midday. Tickets purchased on site. We were the only guests at this time - which added to the ambiance. This artwork evokes a lot of emotions. At times, felt scary and creepy. However it can also be interpreted as a “pulsing” glimmer here from the revitalisation efforts that is being added from the art installations in the area itself (in my opinion, I can see how many would disagree w this take). A worthwhile visit if interested in depopulation and how Japan has changed since its crash in the 90s leading to many dead towns.

(Translated by Google) 2021.7 visit Echigo-Tsumari Satoyama Echigo-Tsumari Art Festival 2006 work. A collaboration between Christian Boltanski and Jean Calment, it is a permanent installation in an abandoned school. Unfortunately, my first visit was on a day when the museum was closed, so it was my long-awaited return visit. Maybe it's because I'm scared, My legs were not moving forward as much as I expected. The first and final class was intense for me. The smell of straw, like a silo of earth and straw, the feeling of the wind on my skin, the light and shadow, the sound, the sound of my heart pounding as it approached, left a particularly strong impression on me, and even thinking about it now brings back my anxiety. This anxiety and fear is different from being afraid of spiders or being afraid of the dark, but I think it's similar to that of the wife played by Shelley Duvall, who encounters the scene near the end of Kubrick's movie The Shining when the hotel elevator door slowly opens with a bang. It's like the scene I saw when I was a child is stuck in my mind, and I don't know if it's been engraved into my DNA at some point, like something I'd seen in a dream when I was sick, a scene that would have made me scream with anxiety and despair if I had dreamed of it, but it was quietly real here, and I was inside it. Proceed through the hallway lined with portraits painted in black. Was it the setting sun or a searchlight? The strong light shining in and the slowly rotating ventilation fan were so disturbing. A scene from Schindler's List comes to mind. I couldn't get into the room where the explosion sounded, which was right on the second floor after climbing the stairs, and I stood there at the entrance, and that's when I realized the extent of my anxiety. Resisting the urge to cover my ears from the sound of the explosion, I couldn't help but take a good look at the white room, so I quickly walked out into the sunlight without looking back. When I saw the tranquil scenery of Satoyama, I felt glad and happy to be able to return to my daily life. Even in the parking lot outside the building, the sound of cicadas and the faint sound of a heartbeat could be heard. I remember and reflect on this experience every day. It was scary, scary, scary. It was really scary. For some people, this work may go beyond just appreciating a bit of scary art, and before they know it, they may find themselves drawn into a nightmare. The reason you can have such an experience is because it is a work with such a strong and powerful message. I wonder how it will feel the next time I visit. In memory of Christian Boltanski. A closed school in the middle of summer, the echoing sound of cicadas, and cheerful ghosts. What a perfect piece for summer. (It seems that it was released in the middle of winter in January in 2021) 2024.8.11 revisited.

(Translated by Google) 2023/04/30㈰ It was my first time visiting. It is also a campsite, They are coming from Gunma prefecture. There were also campers. On the left is a waterfall flowing down the rock face. If you pass through the torii gate, you will see a large waterfall. The wind pressure was tremendous, I was overwhelmed. Splashes will fly, If you get close to the waterfall, you will get a little wet. I tried to get as close as I could. This is Itoigawa's number one power spot. It's no exaggeration to say that. I have already uploaded what it looks like on my YouTube channel, "Power Spot Tour Vol. 174 [Fudo Falls] ~ Via Mushikawa Sekisho ~" I hope you find this helpful.

It is a campsite, and anyone can use it for free if you register at the administration building. Although the grounds are not very large, there are clean toilets and water sources. There are many dragonflies flying in the pond. You can go close to the basin of the waterfall and bathe in negative ions to your heart's content. (Translated by Google) The waterfall is located at a campsite, so if you don't stop at the upper paved parking lot and go to the lower unpaved parking lot, it is a large waterfall that can be seen in 3 minutes on foot without any ups and downs. It is said to be a 70m waterfall with 3 stages (15m + 15m + 40m), but unfortunately it looks like a 40m waterfall with 1 stage at first glance. If you look closely, you'll notice that there's one step above, but I wonder if this is the first step and the second step isn't visible due to the angle. The area in front of the waterfall is also open, so it would be nice if an observation tower was constructed so that you can see the whole view, but it would be difficult because Fudoson is enshrined there. Nestled in the heart of the Echigo-Tsumari region, POTEMKIN - Echigo-Tsumari Art Field is a captivating blend of art and nature that has stood the test of time. After a decade since my last visit, I was thrilled to find its charm intact. The juxtaposition of golden rice fields framed by rusted iron plates transforms an ordinary rural scene into something extraordinary.
The majesty of trees, as framed by the reddish patina of the building, and the surrounding padi fields all around. Accompanied by the gurgling river.

(Translated by Google) I visited for the first time in about 10 years. Although it is an old stock exhibited at the Tsumari Art Triennale, it still has the same presence as ever. I've posted a photo (leaving aside the quality of the photo), but the real thing is several times better. The composition of the golden rice fields cut out through the gaps between the inorganic rusted iron plates creates a strange sensation of turning an ordinary rural landscape into art. When you look at the seemingly inorganic space from a cut-away perspective, it feels like a dry landscape in an ancient temple in Kyoto. The midsummer days are quite harsh, but as autumn deepens, I want to spend half a day in a daze while listening to the sound of flowing river water. (To prevent the spread of infection, please be considerate and offer your time to the next viewer.) (Translated by Google) I went during Golden Week. I don't know if floating sculpture is the correct answer, but this work was very popular with the children. As an adult, I was very interested in Mr. Isobe's way of thinking about the way he creates works, as he understands that the flow of the wind comes from the flow of rivers and topography, and he is thinking about how to sublimate this into art. I thought the term ecological planning made sense. Even during Golden Week, it was still cold in Niigata, so I felt like I needed an extra layer of clothing, especially for the red floating sculpture. You also have to take off your shoes to go near the works, so it's even colder. Adults are 800 yen, infants are free, and elementary school students and older are 400 yen. I think it takes about 20 minutes to just take a quick look, and 1.5 hours if you want to take a closer look, including the history.
