Pagoda

Nestled in the heart of Yangon, the Shwedagon Pagoda stands as a breathtaking testament to Myanmar's rich cultural heritage. Towering at 99 meters and adorned with an impressive 11 tons of pure gold, this historic Buddhist temple is not only the oldest pagoda in the country but also one of the most revered religious sites globally. Dating back over 2,600 years, it houses sacred relics from four past Buddhas, including strands of hair from Gautama Buddha himself.
After sunset, we stepped barefoot up Singuttara Hill, the city lights of Yangon fading behind us as the golden glow of Shwedagon rose ahead. Even in the dimming light, it felt like a world apart. A place alive with quiet devotion and flickering candles, as if the whole hill breathed with something ancient. Parts of the complex were under repair, as the recent earthquake left its mark in cracks and bamboo scaffolding. But even through the signs of damage, the stupa stood tall, nearly 100 meters of gold catching the last traces of daylight, still radiant, still sacred. We moved slowly, clockwise, like the others, past smaller pagodas and shrines, some draped in hessian, others lit by oil lamps. There was a hush in the air, not silence, but something deeper like a respect, a resilience. This place, even wounded, still held its power. They say it houses relics of four Buddhas, including eight hairs of Gautama himself. And in that moment, with the night wrapped around us and the scent of incense rising, it wasn’t hard to believe. I paused to hold time for the victims: the ones lost to the quake, and the many more bound under the weight of oppression. A quiet offering. A silent wish. And beneath that golden spire, I let gratitude swell in me for the unseen hands and hearts that helped heal my own, for the goodwill of the universe that still reaches out, even when things break. Spirituality, beauty, and the weight of centuries all met us there, even after the ground had shifted beneath it.

Probably one of the most best experiences I had in Yangon, visiting the Shwedagon Pagoda. Pictures online don't capture how truly majestic and magnificent this structure is. The way it glows in the daytime or at night, will simply capture your attention everytime.
Steve — Google review
The Shwedagon Pagoda is Myanmar’s most sacred Buddhist site, a 112 meter tall golden stupa in Yangon. It was constructed 2,600 years ago which is now the oldest Buddhist stupa in the world. Houses relics of the past four Buddhas, including eight hairs of the current Buddha, making it a pilgrimage site of global importance. The pagoda complex is adorned with thousands of gold plates, diamonds, rubies, and other significant stones. We were so lucky that it was sunny the day we went since it is rainy season in Yangon and it was raining most of the time while we were there. It was scorching hot that day, we cannot stay for more than an hour to see the huge complex. I was only able to take few photos as we were both melting and the tile floor can get very hot, I was walking like a kangaroo on barefoot. No footwear allowed upon entering. I was in awe with the beauty and history of the pagoda and other temples. Truly thankful to be able to see this complex for once in my life travels. #labonitaviajera #iamkbonita #shwedagonpagoda

The place is huge and very impressive. The ticket is 25000 and you have to pay in cash and ATM is only inside(!), so you can’t get inside unless you have cash. Girls who give tickets won’t let me in, I was lucky a guide helped me P.S. the ticket says that the price is 10000, so not about legitimacy of their posters

The Shwedagon Pagoda is the most sacred Buddhist pagoda in Myanmar, as it is believed to contain relics of the four previous Buddhas of the present kalpa. It is also known as the Great Dagon Pagoda and the Golden Pagoda, is a gilded stupa located in Yangon, Myanmar. The stupa is made of genuine gold plates
CK C — Google review
The Shwedagon Pagoda is without a doubt the most iconic and sacred site in all of Myanmar. Towering majestically over Yangon, this golden stupa is not only a religious monument but a symbol of the nation’s spiritual heart and cultural pride. From the moment you arrive, the atmosphere is deeply moving. The pagoda glows with a brilliant golden hue, especially breathtaking at sunrise or sunset when the light dances across its gilded surface. Believed to enshrine relics of four Buddhas, including strands of Gautama Buddha’s hair, the site holds immense spiritual significance for Buddhist devotees. The complex itself is vast and filled with richly decorated shrines, prayer halls, and smaller stupas. Every detail—from the ornate carvings to the flickering candlelight —reflects centuries of devotion and artistry. The soft chanting of monks, the scent of incense, and the sight of locals and pilgrims in prayer create an atmosphere of deep peace and reverence. Shwedagon is not just a place to visit—it’s an experience to absorb. Whether you're there for spiritual reasons, cultural exploration, or simply to admire its architectural splendor, the pagoda leaves a lasting impression. It is a must-see landmark that captures the soul of Myanmar. The Shwedagon Pagoda is located on Singuttara Hill in Dagon Township, Yangon, Myanmar. Towering over the city, it can be seen from many vantage points, especially near Kandawgyi Lake. To reach the Shwedagon Pagoda, tourists can take taxis or buses from downtown Yangon, such as Line 8 or Line 11. While buses stop nearby, the easiest and most convenient option is by taxi, which typically takes about 15–20 minutes. There are four main entrances: South, West, North, and East. The southern entrance is wheelchair accessible and includes an elevator. International tourists are required to pay an entrance fee of approximately 10,000 Kyat. Opening hours: Daily from 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Things to know before visiting: Visitors must dress appropriately, wear long pants or a skirt that covers the knees and a shirt with sleeves that covers the shoulders. Avoid tight or revealing clothing. Shoes and socks must be removed before entering. Best time to visit: Early morning or evening—to enjoy the cool air and stunning light, especially during sunset when the golden pagoda gleams against the sky. It’s customary to walk clockwise around the pagoda, refrain from loud conversation, and avoid pointing your feet at sacred objects. There is a tourist service center, and inside the museum, you'll find displays of religious antiques and historical exhibitions.

Very nice experience to go here in the evening. Last time I went in the daytime so it was another kind of experience. In brief, very nice and beautiful. Very big place so you should spare at least 1 hour to be here.

Bogyoke Aung San Market is a bustling bazaar housed in a colonial building, offering a wide array of items such as antiques, jewelry, art, and food. It's situated near attractions like the 2,200-year-old Sule Pagoda and vibrant night markets. The market has almost a century of history and is a popular spot for tourists to purchase souvenirs like Burmese cloth, clothing, and jewelry.
If you are looking for precious gems, jewelry, clothes, crafts made of stone or wood, this market is your place. There are also money exchange offices with good rates. There are also places to eat or have a refreshing orange or avocado juice.
Blanca R — Google review
This is the best place to buy gifts or souvenirs. They offer anything from traditional garments, shirts and polos (I bought a few and they’re of good quality!), jewelry, paintings, and other trinkets. Definitely a must go place for tourists wanting to see handmade local crafts and souvenirs!
Janno — Google review
Extremely authentic place to visit if you are into arts. Looks like a big art gallery, a mix of modernity and past. Lots of things can be purchased there from jewellery to paintings. There are also dining experiences available. Lots of public restrooms. Overall, interesting calm walk-through the whole market.
Daniil M — Google review
Traditional market but it was not a happy feeling after I got back in the hotel checking my purchases. After converting what I’ve paid for 5 items I bought, surely I paid 3X for what it should be. I just wish people or sellers are honest and will not do their dirty tricks to earn more. This type of experience shoo tourist away to buy. Sad, because I’m sure not all sellers are bad and must have decent sellers out there. Negative experience from visiting this market for me but in a positive note, I hope what I paid extra, helped them in a way. Overall, it is a place to buy souvenirs. Good for photo ops, with its natural local charm. #iamkbonita #labonitaviajera #myanmar

I really enjoyed my visit to Bogyoke Aung San Market! It’s a great place to walk around and explore, with so many interesting shops selling jewelry, gemstones, handicrafts, and beautiful Burmese fabrics. There’s also a good mix of souvenirs and local products, so it’s perfect for picking up something unique. The market has a lively but relaxed atmosphere, and the vendors are friendly and not too pushy. If you enjoy bargaining, you can get some great deals! There are also food stalls where you can try some local snacks. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Yangon! I’d love to come back and explore more.

Bogyoke Aung San Market in Yangon is an exceptional market, even for someone who isn’t usually a fan of touristy markets. It’s well-organized, making it easy to browse, and the selection is impressive. You’ll find beautiful items at reasonable prices, from jewelry and textiles to souvenirs. It’s a pleasure to explore, with a clean and orderly setup that sets it apart from many other markets. Definitely worth a visit!
Tibor — Google review
Interesting market. Selling Various items from gems, fabrics, antiques, souvenirs etc. Visitors need to bargain for the best price
Mohd H — Google review
Huge bustling market which is a lot of fun to simply just wander around or pick up souvenirs and really anything else you'd ever want to buy. It can be a bit daunting to find your way around, but it's perfectly safe and there are always lots of other tourists wandering around as well. I bought a couple souvenirs and found prices were totally reasonable without needing to bargain beforehand.

The National Museum of Myanmar, a modern five-story establishment in Yangon, is an essential destination for anyone eager to delve into the rich tapestry of Burmese history and culture. Established in 1952, this museum showcases a diverse array of exhibitions that highlight everything from the evolution of the Myanmar alphabet to the unique traditions and attire of various ethnic groups. Among its most captivating displays is the Royal Lion Throne, a stunning artifact that embodies deep cultural significance.
The admission fee is 10k now. One locker room for sorting your bag, and a few room prohibited the photoshoots on an piece of paper attached to the ticket also the sign at the door of each a a reminder. Loved the rich culture including the folk art, clothing and the precious display of the royal family items. A great way to get a glimpse of Myanmar and as in its history and geography. It is not as modern and advanced as the ones in those developed countries, but they have made their best efforts showcasing the country obviously.
CP T — Google review
Myanmar National Museum – Honest Impressions The Myanmar National Museum is almost empty — you might find yourself being the only visitor inside. It feels quite deserted, which can be peaceful but also a bit eerie. Bags are not allowed inside. You have to leave them at the entrance in a locker, which is securely locked. The staff are generally friendly and helpful. However, one major downside is that photography is not allowed inside the museum. This is quite disappointing, as most national museums around the world allow visitors to take photos. The museum lacks air conditioning, so it gets uncomfortably hot inside. The exhibits and overall layout feel somewhat underwhelming and basic — it gives off a rather neglected or half-hearted vibe. On the plus side, the entrance fee is cheap, just a few US dollars. But overall, it’s not a very impressive experience unless you’re deeply interested in Burmese history and have time to spare.
Lis H — Google review
The national museum is well worth a visit. It has a lot of very interesting exhibits. It only costs 10,000MMK to visit and can easily take a few hours to go through. I’d recommend it for anyone who wants to learn about Myanmar’s precolonial history.
Laurel J — Google review
It's a must to do if you want to want to learn more on Myanmar. The 4 floors took me ( in fast ) 2 hours but if you are an historian or cultural passioned, it will take you more. Not many people there, it's very quite and good to see the beauties and pieces, you will be alone most of the time in each hall. Very interesting is the music instruments hall on the 3rd floor and the Asian corner on the top floor.
Péchey J — Google review
Surprisingly empty. No bags allowed inside but there are lockers you can rent. Phones are allowed but some areas are off limits for photography. 4 floors with 3-4 galleries per floor. It has everything from Royal Regalia and thrones to prehistoric dinosaur bones. The gallery on the major tribes that make up Myanmar was fascinating as was the music and art gallery. Well worth a visit if you are in the city. Give yourself 2-3 hours to explore.

If you are spending vacation in Yagoon and also interested in learning the culture of Myanmar, the National Museum of Myanmar should be in your to-go lists. This is the main museum of Burmese art, history and culture in Myanmar. The National Museum of Myanmar is a treasure chest of priceless stone inscriptions, documents, carvings, paintings and a host of other artifacts that testify to the ancient culture and civilization of the Myanmar people. Visiting this museum enlightens one with greater knowledge and understanding of beautiful the Myanmar nation and its people. It has an extensive collection of ancient artifacts, ornaments, work of art, inscriptions and historic memorabilia, related to history, culture and civilization of Burmese people.

I was there last year people said its closed now as they plan to move it to another place so you need to check about this. But although of this I want to share my experience about this amazing museum as I really enjoyed to be there last year. First you pay as forginer 500k and you have to leave your bag at outside locker and it's mandatory The museum consist of 5 floors each one has a story and it's special and different items. If you want to know about Burma history and traditions and culture this will be the best place ever as almost show every thing you need to know specially its very hard to find someone explain all of this to you as the history of Burma is long and complicated. I took around 1.5 hours to finish my tour and still feeling its not enough. Overall its a great experience and I hope it still open.

+ Stunning ground floor of the original golden Lion throne showroom from Mandalay. Third floor golden jewelry & Forth floor custom was interesting of showing some highlights of the 135 different tribes history and fashion. + Washroom on every floor. Convenient. - Though not too impressed the young girl guide asking up front for tips if the tour is satisfactory. Reminds of like being in Cuba. Difference being in here she’s polite, friendly & attentive to everyone of our group. Cuba was total opposite. Whole trip in Myanmar has never been asked nor expected tips. - Certain area no photography nor video allowed. Lights at certain floor was quite dim. Entrance Free for locals. 5000 Y for foreigner. Nice staff. English speaking staff available to tour around.

Nestled in the bustling heart of downtown Yangon, the Sule Pagoda stands as a stunning testament to Myanmar's rich history and culture. This gilded Buddhist stupa, believed to be around 2,500 years old, is not only an architectural marvel with its ornate exterior but also a significant landmark in Burmese politics. It has served as a gathering point for pivotal pro-democracy movements throughout history.
The Sule Pagoda is a beautiful landmark located right in the heart of downtown Yangon. According to legend, it was built during the time of Buddha, adding a deep historical and spiritual significance to its charm. The pagoda’s golden exterior gleams in the sunlight, making it a striking sight amidst the bustling city. Entry for foreigners is 10,000 Kyat, and its central location makes it easy to visit while exploring Yangon. It’s a wonderful place to experience the city’s cultural and religious heritage.

The biggest and most respected deity in Myanmar Sule Pagoda is a pagoda built over 2,000 years ago. It is a golden octagonal pagoda located in the center of the roundabout in Yangon. The base of the pagoda has a Buddha image for each day of birth to worship according to tradition. As for praying to the deity, it can grant a blessing. There is a secret: you must pray only once to use it as power for worship. Do not change your mind. Foreigners entrance fee: 10,000 Kyat/person.

Nice from the outside, near Independence statue. I dropped by in the evening so I did not come inside. Will do next time.

Sule Pagoda is an ancient octagonal pagoda located in the heart of the city, surrounded by many roads leading to it. It is a sacred place situated at the center of travel in Yangon, making it a significant cultural and spiritual landmark. Around the base of the pagoda, there are Buddha images designated for each day of birth, allowing visitors to worship according to their birth day. The surroundings of the pagoda are incredibly beautiful, with the golden pagoda standing in striking contrast to the green-roofed buildings nearby. To visit the pagoda, visitors must remove their shoes outside, as is customary in every temple in Myanmar. Shoes and socks must be taken off at the entrance as a sign of respect. Sule Pagoda is a must-visit destination for those who want to experience the spiritual and cultural essence of Yangon, offering both a serene atmosphere and a glimpse into the city’s rich heritage.

Sule Pagoda is a must-visit gem in the heart of Yangon! This stunning octagonal stupa, believed to be over 2,500 years old, enshrines a sacred relic of the Buddha, making it a significant pilgrimage site. Surrounded by vibrant streets and colonial architecture, the atmosphere is both lively and serene. Visiting during sunset offers breathtaking views as the golden spire glistens against the sky. Don’t miss this iconic landmark; it’s not just a pagoda but a symbol of resilience and history in Myanmar!
Aung ( — Google review
Visited November 14, 2024 Sule Pagoda, located in the heart of Yangon, is a stunning testament to Myanmar’s rich spiritual and architectural heritage. My visit today left a lasting impression, although the experience was slightly hampered by the midday heat. The golden stupa of Sule Pagoda stands out amidst the city’s busy streets, glowing brightly even under the harsh sun. Its unique octagonal shape and intricate details reflect centuries of craftsmanship. With a history dating back over 2,000 years, it remains an essential spiritual landmark and a beautiful sight to behold. Inside the pagoda, the serene atmosphere was a welcome relief from the chaos of the streets outside. Devotees were quietly praying and making offerings, adding to the sacred ambiance. While the peacefulness inside was soothing, the heat during my pre-lunch visit made it harder to fully enjoy the experience. The entrance fee for foreigners is 10,000 MMK, which is well worth it for the opportunity to explore this historic site. However, I strongly advise against walking to the pagoda, especially during the late morning or midday. The heat was intense, and it made the journey exhausting—opting for a taxi or Grab would be a much better choice. A few meters away from the pagoda, there is a viewpoint that offers a great perspective of Sule Pagoda surrounded by the bustling cityscape. It’s a fantastic spot for taking photos and appreciating the contrast between the ancient stupa and modern Yangon. Sule Pagoda is a must-visit for its stunning architecture and spiritual significance. While the midday heat and surrounding city chaos can be challenging, the pagoda’s beauty and the nearby viewpoint make it a rewarding experience. Just plan your visit carefully, and you’ll appreciate this iconic landmark fully.

The landscape and gardens are impeccably kept, creating a tranquil environment that allows visitors to reflect in peace. The symmetry and order of the gravestones, coupled with the lush greenery surrounding them, instill a sense of reverence and respect. The names, ranks, and countries of the fallen soldiers inscribed on each stone highlight the diversity of those who served. Visitors to Htauk Kyant often comment on the quiet, solemn atmosphere, which provides an opportunity for meaningful reflection on the sacrifices made. It’s also an educational experience, as the memorial serves as a historical reminder of Myanmar’s role in World War II. For those interested in history or simply wishing to pay respects, Htauk Kyant War Cemetery is a poignant and respectful destination. It’s recommended to visit in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat, as there is limited shade in the cemetery grounds.

Beautiful and well maintained World wars memorial cemetry in Htauk Kyant, Rangoon, Burma. But people not allowed to enter. Should be assumed temporarily CLOSE.

The Allied War Memorial Cemetery (also known as Taukkyan War Cemetry or Htauk Kyant War Memorial Cemetry) is located at Htauk Kyant, Mingaladon Township, 32km from Yangon, on the way to Bago. It was built in 1951 and it is a memorial cemetery of the Allied soldiers who died in the Myanmar Campaign during World War II.

We visited the memorial garden today and could not be happier. We booked a return journey on Grab and the driver kindly waited 30 minutes for us (for a small tip). The memorial was listed online as ‘closed to the public’ but the gardeners beckoned us over and allowed us to enter. We had the whole place to ourselves! The gardens and graves were so well maintained and the whole place was just stunning. They directed us to the grave of my Great-grandfather and were very welcoming. We are so thankful for their help. Well worth a visit!

Beautifully designed and maintained grounds that will impress most visitors. I visited the Htauk Kyant War Memorial Cemetery on my way back from a day trip from Yangon to Bago. It's an excellent place to stop on the return trip. It provides a lesson in history and a look into the lives of locals who use these grounds as a public park, a green space where there are many corners to sit, observe and meditate.

Great place for historic understanding and realisation of the damages by the world war. How people who were thousands of kilometres from this place fought in the war that was going to give nothing to them. People from Africa fighting for England in Myanmar against the Japanese. How on earth that makes sense? It's a reminder that wars are fought for the egos of the leaders.

The Htauk Kyant War Memorial Cemetery is an absolute marvel to behold even from the outside. As I approached the entrance, I was immediately captivated by the sheer grandeur and beauty of this memorial site. Nestled amidst lush greenery and serene surroundings, the cemetery stands as a poignant tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War II. The perfectly manicured lawns, adorned with colorful flowers and towering trees, create an ambiance of peace and tranquility. The striking architecture of the memorial instantly catches the eye. The tall stone pillars, engraved with the names of the fallen soldiers, stand tall and proud, reminding visitors of the bravery and heroism displayed by these courageous men. The intricate details of the carvings showcase the dedication and craftsmanship that went into creating this memorial. What truly sets this cemetery apart is the sense of serenity it exudes. The calmness in the air is almost palpable, allowing visitors to reflect and pay their respects in a peaceful environment. The perfectly aligned tombstones, each bearing the name, rank, and regiment of the fallen soldier, create a solemn atmosphere that is both awe-inspiring and humbling. As I gazed at the cemetery from the outside, I couldn't help but feel a profound sense of gratitude for the sacrifices made by these brave soldiers. The sprawling grounds are a testament to the immense scale of their service and the lasting impact they have left behind. Moreover, the natural beauty surrounding the memorial adds to its allure. The vibrant flora and fauna create a picturesque backdrop, making it a perfect place to pause, reflect, and appreciate the lives that were lost. The meticulously maintained gardens and pathways invite visitors to take a leisurely stroll and soak in the peaceful ambiance. While I couldn't venture inside the memorial during my visit, the exterior itself left an indelible impression on me. The Htauk Kyant War Memorial Cemetery is undoubtedly a place of profound beauty, where nature and remembrance harmoniously converge. In conclusion, the Htauk Kyant War Memorial Cemetery is a breathtaking sight even from the outside. Its remarkable architecture, meticulously maintained grounds, and serene surroundings make it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a place of remembrance and tranquility.

Even though it's right next to Highway 1, it still manages to be a tranquil place for remembrance and reflection. The grounds are well kept and clean for the most part, and visitors and locals are generally respectful of the place and what this cemetery stands for. You can see the graves of people (some marked, some unknown) from numerous countries. While it may not be a "must see" when in the Yangon area, you certainly won't be worse off for taking some kind of transportation (bus, taxi, bicycle) out here to see it.

Yangon's Chinatown, located near Sule Pagoda and 19th street, has a rich history dating back to the 1850s when it was established during British rule. Today, it is a bustling area with over 150,000 Chinese residents. Visitors can explore ancient temples and pagodas, indulge in traditional Chinese cuisine like tofu and dumplings, and browse through the vibrant night market for souvenirs.
The most famous place among local residents and foreigners. 19th street is the most popular.

So dirty and unorganized. Mostly was for local, not really touristy as other typical China town. Located next to Downtown Yangon. You can also hire the tricycle, I paid 10k Kyatts for 1 hour. No English for sure. Night time, on 19th street where all the tourists go to.

It’s fun to go there. There is a variety of food stalls and have a wet market. If you are looking to buy sweets, snacks and etc you can find there. Other than that, there’s nothing else much to do except to pay respect at the monastery.

This is one of the most famous Buddhist temples in Yangon, known for its largest Buddha image in Myanmar. The Buddha statue was first built in 1907 as an open-air sitting Buddha. It was unfortunately blown up by the Japanese in the Second World War. It was rebuilt in 1953 to the current white big reclining Buddha. Besides the Buddha statue, there are also painting depicting the life of Buddha on the wall. Worth a visit

Chaukhtatgyi Reclining Buddha is the third-largest reclining Buddha in Myanmar, located in Yangon. The Buddha statue is incredibly beautiful, measuring 65 meters long and 16 meters high. One of its most special features is its very large and expressive eyes, which add to its majestic appearance. Walking to the back, you will find Thep Than Jai, where visitors can ask for blessings and make wishes. The reclining Buddha is truly magnificent and offers a serene and spiritual atmosphere. Visitors can also climb the stairs at the back of the Buddha to take stunning pictures, providing a unique perspective of this grand statue. I highly recommend visiting this temple for those interested in Buddhist culture and history or simply to admire its beauty and tranquility.

Visited on November 15, 2024 Today, I had the chance to visit Chaukhtatgyi Buddha Temple in Yangon, and it was an absolutely stunning experience. The temple is home to a massive reclining Buddha statue, which is the highlight of the site and truly breathtaking. The reclining Buddha at Chaukhtatgyi is enormous—66 meters long—and beautifully crafted. Its serene expression and the intricate details, especially on the soles of the feet with 108 sacred symbols, were fascinating. Standing in front of such a grand statue, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of calm and reverence. The colors and design of the Buddha make it visually striking, and it’s a sight I’ll never forget. The temple’s peaceful atmosphere was one of the best parts of my visit. It wasn’t crowded, and the gentle sound of chanting and the aroma of incense created a tranquil setting. Watching the locals offering flowers and prayers gave me a deeper appreciation of the space as a living, spiritual place. Getting to the temple was straightforward, and entry was free, though I left a small donation. The grounds were well-kept, and there were shaded areas where I could sit and take in the atmosphere. It was nice to see that photography was allowed, so I could capture some memories without feeling intrusive. Dress Code: Make sure to wear modest clothing, covering shoulders and knees. Best Time to Visit: I went before lunch and it is very humid outside. Chaukhtatgyi Buddha Temple is a must-visit if you’re in Yangon. The reclining Buddha alone is worth the trip, and the peaceful environment made it a perfect escape from the city. It’s a place I’d definitely recommend to anyone visiting Myanmar.

St. Mary's Cathedral, a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture, stands proudly in Botahtaung Township, Yangon. Completed in 1909 and designed by the talented Dutch architect Joseph Cuypers, this magnificent structure features an eye-catching red brick facade adorned with soaring spires and intricate stained glass windows. As Myanmar's largest Catholic cathedral, it offers visitors a glimpse into its rich history and spiritual significance. The cathedral was built on challenging marshland conditions alongside St.
One of the most splendid looking church I have ever been to. The interior of the church is super awesome. You must look into the glass painting which looks like LED screen when the sunlight comes in. Huge places to sit and spend alone time. Of you are a guy who likes taking photos this is your spot. Look out for time when there is no one to get the best shot. The entry fee is 2000 mmk per person. It's must visit for all the tourist coming to yangon. The night view is also great

Saint Mary' Cathedral along Bogyoke Road in downtown Yangon is one of the Roman Catholic churches in Yangon City. I had a chance to visit this church on Christmas eve to celebrate mass right. The Cathedral is built with bricks or what appeared to be brick. It is not as big as other cathedrals I have seen but it is quite spacious. The church is also adorned with a lot of statues of saints together with diorama of the life of Christ. They have a wide screen LED TV which they use instead of a projector. It has enough electric fans that ventilation was good. They also have a pulpit, which in the past is where the priests serve their sermon. An ample ground and garden surrounds the church, with an image of our Lady of Lourdes on the outside.

Notes: 2000kys entry fees for tourists - payment booth is at the right side of the gate inside. For visiting (everyday): 8:30am to 12pm then at 2pm to 4:30pm. If there is an event then long pants is required Taking photos are allowed unless there is an event happening inside. Nestled in the heart of Yangon, Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue stands as a poignant reminder of Myanmar's once-vibrant Jewish community. Built in 1896, this historic structure is not only the last remaining synagogue in the country but also a captivating piece of architectural heritage. Tucked away on a quaint street amidst bustling Muslim vendors and colorful Indian paint shops, it offers visitors an intimate glimpse into the past.
I really love this synagogue. It is the one and only synagogue left in the whole of Myanmar. It is more than a hundred years old now. In the early 19th Century, there was a huge number of Jewish community in Yangon. This synagogue hold at least 120 Torah. Now only 2 remains in this synagogue. It is maintained by Mr. Sammy Samuel, a Burmese Jew in Myanmar. It was recognized by Yangon Heritage Trust as a historical heritage of Yangon. Though, only a handful of Jewish community remains in Yangon, this synagogue receive prayers from experts Jews working in Yangon. When you visit Yangon, I would like you to visit the synagogue.

Musmeah Yeshua Synagogue is the last remaining Jewish house of worship in Downtown Yangon and Burma's only synagogue. The synagogue stands between Indian paint shops and Muslim traders on a small street near the city centre. A plaque at the entrance of the building states that the present stone building, which was built between 1893 – 1896, replaced an earlier, smaller wooden structure that was erected in 1854. It is one of 188 sites on the Yangon City Development Council’s list of Heritage Buildings. It serves the few remaining Jews of the country, mostly descendants of Baghdadi Jews from Iraq. The current building was completed in 1896. The neighborhood is now primarily Muslim.
Miljan L — Google review
tl; dr: Well preserved relic of a dying community For a city with only 25 jews left (the last time I looked it up), this synagogue is a symbol of the resilience of the Jewish community. Yes it's not particularly beautiful or noteworthy or large, but it is of cultural and historical significance, and I'm glad we stopped to see it, even if it was a bit difficult to find and looked shut off when we finally located it. If you're not interested in things like this though (and why would you be visiting Myanmar if you weren't?), you should probably skip this, but I found it utterly enthralling.

Nestled in the heart of Yangon, the Bogyoke Aung San Museum stands as a poignant tribute to General Aung San, the revered founder of modern Myanmar. This museum is housed in his former residence, where he lived with his family for just two years before his tragic assassination in 1947. Visitors can explore an array of exhibits that showcase personal artifacts, photographs, and significant documents that reflect Aung San's impactful life and contributions to Myanmar's independence from British rule.
Visiting Bogyoke Aung San Museum was a truly memorable experience! The museum beautifully preserves the legacy of General Aung San, offering a deep insight into his life and contributions to Myanmar’s history. The exhibits are well-organized, and the historical artifacts make it feel like stepping back in time. The atmosphere is peaceful, and the building itself has a lot of historical charm. I went to the museum on Martyrs' Day, so it was packed but also not too packed for many people to bother you. The museum/house is well-maintained, and the people there were very nice. But one thing: for Martyrs' Day, you have to go get a sticker way on the other end of the road, so that's pretty inconvenient I would say. Other than that, pretty nice place.

The museum celebrates the life and times of General Aung San. It is quite small and can be visited in under an hour. It is housed in a charming colonial building, the last home the famed political leader lived in before his assassination. A young Aung San Suu Kyi, the general's daughter and herself a prominent political personality, figures in a lot of the photos on display. For its size, the museum charges a steep fee of 5,000 kyats (about 4 USD), the same amount charged at the huge National Museum not far away.
G A — Google review
The place has both historical and present significance. Historical - because it had been the place where the family of General Aung San (Father of Myanmar) and his daughter the present State Counsellor of Myanmar and noble peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi had lived. The house is very beautiful and attractive. It is constructed at small hillock. Inside the house, the statue of Aung San which really looks like a living one has been kept, you may like to talk with him. It is so amazing to see with your own eyes the place where great people has lived their live, shared their thoughts, dine together so on and so forth. It is a good place for researcher too. The overcoat presented to General Aung San by great Indian leader Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru has been kept there, and numbers of biography of General Aung San, Su Kyi and other valuable books are available there.

I went there on a weekday with my friend. We were the only visitors for that evening, which made our visit even more special. The people there were so friendly as I even felt like I was visiting my family's house instead. So nostalgic, peaceful and quiet. Fresh air, green grass and tall trees made us want to comeback again. Not to mention that the warm light, photographs and wooden furnitures took us back to 90s' era. It's recommended to take time and imagine to become one as you belong there. The lady there told us that we would not need to make a payment for future visits. And she also let us know that they open to everyone to read books and chill in December. Wish you all had great memories there.🩵

It’s a relatively inconspicuous and hidden gem among all the sightseeing spots in Yangon and rest of the Myanmar. U Thant was an avant garde statesman not only from Myanmar but was a towering personality among the world leaders. This museum offers incredible insights of the less-talked about Asia icon and an apostle of peace worldwide. The tiny museum hidden in one bucolic part of Yangon is a must visit place for any scholar or journalist or any one who loves history and geopolitics. It’s a unique museum where the staff welcome you touch every memorabilia on display to make your experience more interactive and insightful. Two of the staff I met at the museum, Miss May and Miss Sie Sar, were immensely helpful and fluent in English to help me understand the incredible man U Thant was. It’s a small but amazingly neat museum with great information available for the viewers to know more about U Thant and his monumental works for the United Nations. It’s indeed a must visit place in Yangon.

It's probably worth making a booking to ensure that you can get the tour. Entrance fee is MMK20,000 for foreigners and MMK10,000 for locals and well worth it.

Best museum I’ve seen in Rangoon. Well designed spaces with good information. The internal transcripts on the Cuban Missile Crisis were particularly interesting. The girl on duty was very knowledgeable about U Thant and explained the photos well. I also enjoyed talking to her about Yangon University, where she’s currently taking her Masters at. Would have loved to chat with her more but was pretty much chased off by rampant mosquitoes, especially in the garden. If you’re walking to this house using Gmaps, don’t walk in from the U Wisara main road like I did! You gotta come in via Chindwin Road from Inya Road instead.

Former UN secretary general, U Thant, stayed this house before he worked for UN. The exhibition in the house shows his life and how he worked hard for the peace of the world. There is small room to watch videos and many panels to explain his life. The house had been renovated recently so not many furniture can be seen as he stayed, but it's clean nice place to visit.

Yangon Central Railway Station is a captivating blend of history and culture, having been rebuilt in 1954 after its destruction during World War II. This architectural gem showcases Burmese post-colonial design with classical influences. It serves as a vital hub connecting various regions of Myanmar and is the starting point for the enchanting Yangon Circular Railway.
Worth a visit. A bit run down but still very beautiful architecture. The perimeter outside is a bit sketchy, but still safe. There is a walkway on the second floor that will take you to the downtown.

Yangon Central Railway Station, a magnificent architectural marvel, stands as a testament to the city's rich history. Its grand and massive infrastructure, though impressive, reveals signs of age. To cater to the demands of modern travelers, the station requires significant upgrades, including the installation of modern equipment and arrangements, clear direction signs, and user-friendly online systems. These enhancements will not only improve the overall passenger experience but also elevate the station's status as a vital transportation hub in Yangon.

A very nice place in Yangon. The central station with circulation train around the city that would be one of the most interesting activities in the capital of Myanmar. The construction is remained for long time but being in good condition in use. It is not so hard to buy ticket for tourists like us, because they have all the guidance sign in each lane.

Yangon Central Railway Station is a very old building located at Town Center. The city train circular ride is 3 hours but for only 200 Kyat (USD0.13), truly value for money. The train route passes many small suburb area and you can alight on any stop you like. If 3 hours journey is too long, just hop off on any stop and take Grab to go to your preferred destination. It’s indeed a unique experience

At the Yangon Central Railway station, there is a great tourist attraction - the circular rail line! It takes some 3.5 - 4 hours, running from this station to different parts of towns/villages and returning to same station. There was much fun, inside the coach, seeing and experiencing like the locals do. The mad rush, the hard seats and then, the many peddlers selling their wares and food stuff, from one stop to the other. And the views, outside the coach are live pictures in motion. Beautiful scenes of countryside, wooden houses, farmlands, cars, roads etc...in sequence. A very memorable trip in this slow moving train.

The nearest hotel for this station is Hotel G. It is an amazing experience for doing the circular train trip. Interesting architecture outside the building. Inside the building is old and dusty. You can tell the guards to let you in and go onto the railway track for photo taking😎 You can also buy the train ticket at 200kyat for a round trip, which will take 3 hours for the whole trip🚂

A Historic Journey Through Yangon Central Station No trip to Yangon is complete without a visit to the iconic Yangon Central Railway Station. This historic transport hub offers a glimpse into Myanmar's colonial past and remains an important part of daily life for locals. Stepping into the vast domed lobby felt like going back in time. The grand British architecture and intricate tilework have been beautifully preserved since the station was built in 1954. I loved admiring the arched colonnades, painted ceiling murals, and giant clocktower from the platforms. Yet the real charm comes from the buzzing energy of passengers, vendors, and trains passing through. Families wait for their journeys on shaded teak benches, monks offer prayers, and the smell of local snacks like chickpea fritters fills the air. I took a circular train ride just to soak up the sights and sounds. Passing crowded outer neighborhoods and rural villages surrounding Yangon provided fascinating views of everyday life. The old diesel locomotives and wooden train cars added to the nostalgic vibe. The station doubles as a social space where people gather to eat, shop, and relax. Browsing the bookstalls on the platforms, I picked up a beautiful vintage map of Myanmar. I even stumbled upon an art gallery exhibiting local paintings. Yangon Central Station encapsulates the spirit, history, and people that make this city so incredible. It's the perfect place to experience the rhythms of daily Burmese culture. I could have spent hours exploring this transportation jewel. For an immersive experience, don't miss taking a train journey from Yangon's spectacular central station.

Ride the Circle train here. Buy tickets on platform 7. It is currently closed partway for track works so you can only go one way. We got off the train after we felt that we had enough and caught a taxi back to the city. Still a good adventure and experience

It's nice 👍, quiet and peaceful, it's beautiful. There are also rides for kids and restaurants for adults. There are rides like bike rides, flying plate ride, and many more games 😎 If you are a natural lover , you're gonna love this place 💞. It's nice to have a picnic 🧺 with family and friends. Also have festive season programs. It's big so don't get lost. Many varieties of shops, cafes and restaurants for everyone.

Lack of environmental cleanness. Entry Fees is 1000 ks for each whether kid or adult. But it's one time use and not covered for the whole day. Not recommended for kids. Some games are expensive and I think it's not worth. Suggest: Should be moderate and maintenance.

It is a beautiful park but there are crowded in weekend. Because it is located central point of Yangon and near around Shwedagon Pagoda, Sule Pagoda and famous shopping malls. It is also called amusement park and another amusement park also located in there. That amusement park is called Happy Zone. There have many restaurants and food court in there. But foods are not delicious and too much expensive. I strongly recommend please go there in weekday and bring your own food if you plan to go there.

Nice large park withe awesome green and small lake it's highly recommended to go there after you finished your visit to shwedagon Pagoda which is very close to this park. You can spent a great time walking around in the fresh air and enjoy the sculptures around also there is a great opportunity to take alot of nice photos with windows background 😀 You can find street food and drinks there as some small shops are inside also there is a big resturant When I visit at morning It was so calm but as usual at weekend it's very crowded There is entrance fees but it's very cheap.

This is like a theme park with rides. There are also lots of people and eateries in the area. Although the rides cannot be compared to huge theme parks like Universal Studios, it still does provide the purpose of a fast and fun ride. It is also a good walk to appreciate the view and surroundings.

A remarkable experience for all visitors to Yangon where friendly Christian people celebrate their life and beliefs as the priest offers the Mass the choir sings the ancient liturgy of the Anglican Church and the community of faith uses ancient hymns and practices to bring their families together in a celebration of the people of God ! Refreshing inspiring and devotional for all who love the ancient beauty of the Prayer Book and the English Hymnal as we celebrated as visitors with the local community the thoughts and words of “Jerusalem the Gomden with milk and honey blessed ... “ in a society which has been locked in the past and prevented from reaching out educationally and religiously by a dictatorial government!

Nestled in the vibrant city of Yangon, the Swe Taw Myat Pagoda stands out as a stunning example of modern Buddhist architecture. Adorned with shimmering gold leaf and white stucco, it radiates beauty under the afternoon sun. The pagoda features intricate motifs that captivate visitors, inviting them to wander through its various entrances and explore its charming alleyways. Once home to a revered tooth relic of Gautama Buddha, today an exquisite ivory replica is displayed within its serene confines.
One of the famous Pagoda in Yangon, Myanmar. The pagoda was constructed to enshrine a sacred Buddha tooth relic, believed to be one of the teeth of the Gautama Buddha who died some 2,500 years ago. Quiet, peaceful and relaxing mindset.

Besides the fact that the marbles are too hot are your feet get almost burned as you walk bare foot, the Pagoda is quite spectacular both inside and out.
Bat F — Google review
Swe Taw Myat Pagoda, also known as the Buddha Tooth Relic Pagoda, was constructed to enshrine a sacred tooth relic of Gautama Buddha. This relic, believed to be one of Buddha’s teeth, was brought from China in 1994 and displayed for 45 days for public homage. The pagoda, funded by donations from Burmese and international Buddhists, features an ivory replica of the relic today. Its design is inspired by the ancient Ananda Pagoda in Bagan, and it uniquely allows public viewing of the relic, which is typically hidden in most pagodas. The best times to visit Swe Taw Myat Pagoda to avoid crowds are early in the morning around sunrise or in the evening around sunset. These times offer pleasant weather and a more tranquil experience, as the pagoda is generally less busy during these hours. The pagoda is open daily from 6 AM to 6 PM, and planning your visit for 2 to 3 hours is ideal for a thorough exploration.
Aung ( — Google review
Worth the visit! It's very calm in the morning, not too many people around. Inside there's the tooth relic, but no description of what you're looking at, so I didn't even know there was a sacred tooth. The intricate details on windows and doors are just super nice. The road to the pagoda is also very beautiful, lined by trees and you pass by a small lake. The official entry fee for foreigners is 3000 MMK

This Pegoda is bit far from the central yangon, it's quite near the airport. But it's worth seeing. I would suggest best time to go is in the evening when you can see the day light and well as the dawn from the Pegoda. The lighting inside the Pegoda is mesmerizing. It is said Buddha's tooth is placed here. I loved it I hope you guys will as well
Sanjay C — Google review
Swe Taw Myat Pagoda or ” Buddha Tooth Relic Pagoda ” is one of the most sacred worship in Yangon. A lot of travelers when traveling Myanmar have selected Swe Taw Myat Pagoda is the first destination. This temple is not very large but really nice with beautiful architecture. Unlike most relics of the Buddha, the Buddha’s relics at Swe Taw Myat are so well displayed that public can admire. The Swe Taw Myat Pagoda is located on a small hill called Dhammapala in the town of Mayangone, south of Yangon Airport. The main entrance is exquisitely decorated and located on Sware Taw Myat road. The easiest way to get there is by taxi, at a cost of about 5,000 Kyat from downtown Yangon. The Swe Taw Myat Pagoda was built to house and worship the sacred relics of the Buddha, believed to be a relic of Gautama Buddha who died 2,500 years ago. Along with the relics of Buddha’s tooth, which came from the original two ivories, all these artifacts are still preserved today. Sweat Taw Myat Pagoda was constructed with unique architecture. It is a large white building decorated with gold motifs, according to the ancient Ananda temple in Bagan, built in the late 11th century. Sweat Taw Myat Pagoda is a pagoda with four entrances in four symmetrical directions. The stairs to each entrance are surrounded by a pair of white and yellow Chinthe – a lion-like mythical creature – in Burma this is a mascot that people believe it is born to protect temples and pagodas. There are stalls inside the pagoda where worshipers can buy flowers, incense and other offerings. In the center of the great hall, the roof of the pagoda is composed of many small roofs piled up in the middle, with various large painted gold columns arranged harmoniously looks like a formal umbrella. Many details of this pagoda are decorated intricately. In the middle of Sweat Taw Myat Pagoda, the ivory burial site is stored in a small cylindrical glass box, placed on a cylindrical, multi-storey tall pedestal. The top has a towering roof with many small jade Buddha statues around. The people of Burma come here often carrying gold leaves to lap the statue of Buddha for blessing. Tourists should note that you have to leave your shoes outside before entering the pagoda.
Happyness R — Google review
Exquisite. Carefully preserved tooth relic of Buddha, kept in a majestic temple. What was touching, though, was the reverence displayed by a security guard who came forward respectfully to help in taking a photograph of the relic. The respect and veneration shown towards monks by the people of Myanmar is exemplary. In no pagoda are monks charged for tickets.

Best coffee in Yangon. Vegans they have a great selection of milks. I had the iced coconut latte which was delicious and they were happy to make my smoothie bowl with coconut milk instead of soy. I eat here 2 out of 3 days in Yangon and spent hours working here as well. Staff are super friendly and the location is great. Highly recommend

Nice place to chill alone and chat with a friend. Staffs are really nice and speak fluent English. And I had tea leaf salad and as per staffs they don’t use MSG or sugar in their foods which is very cool and the taste is also decent, I didn’t get to try their lemon tart since it’s only available on weekends. Will I visit there again tho? Maybe if I’m in the area and looking for a nice place to chill. Other than that, I don’t think I’ll go out of my way to visit there again.

One of my very favourite places to eat in Yangon! The taste is good, the selection of vegetarian dishes is enough, price is fair, the staff is helpful and speaks good English and now they even have cakes during weekends from Monsieur Tart! It's just sad they aren't open after 6pm, otherwise this would be my go-to place for dinner.

Really great food and incredibly good coffee, but prices are super expensive compared to other places in Myanmar/northern parts of Yangon. The hostel is nice but their bathroom needs a desperate update. Hot water didn’t work when I stayed there, and the toilet stalls are so small that a tall person has to bend their knees to the chest to sit...otherwise the place and staff is super nice.

What a great find. Right in the heart of Yangon, I've just eaten the best breakfast ever. Check out their dragon fruit smoothie bowl. Lashings of fruit, granola, goji berries. Totally yummy. This place is a guest house too. Really friendly staff. Lovely, clean, stylish rooms. I don't normally give five stars lightly, but this place totally deserved it. Highly recommended.

Nice atmosphere, friendly people, healthy food… this place is great! My husband and I stopped by here for a smoothie bowl (5,500 each) and a coffee (4,000 each) before visiting the Shwedagon Pagoda. Both of the smoothie bowls were delicious, but his yellow smoothie bowl was the standout. It was so thick, and irresistibly good. We also got the iced coconut latte (decent) and iced coconut Americano (SO GOOD!). I asked for a splash of coconut milk in the Americano, and it made it even better. Do it.

It's a bit unusual for me to have the highest rating of a place, but I guess it has to happen sometimes. Anyway, after turning off the highway and coming up the road you get to the covered walkway that leads to the pagoda proper. I was there before 8am which is apparently earlier than most of the stalls under the walkway open, which was nice because it meant I wasn't solicited or stared at like "what is this foreigner doing here?" The feel of the pagoda is very much like it truly belongs to the neighborhood, and isn't trying to entice large crowds to come here. I really liked that about this place; very genuine and down to earth.
