Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine is a serene and historic Shinto shrine known for its beautiful wind chime corridor, intricate carvings, and vibrant festivals. Located just a short walk from the charming street of stone warehouses, this shrine has a 1500-year history of bringing together couples and fostering matrimonial happiness. Young women often visit dressed in traditional yukata to pray for finding a husband.
I’ve been to a lot of temples all over Japan, this one is one of the most beautiful in my opinion. Very calming atmosphere, also a good place to go if you want to wear a kimono!
Victoria — Google review
A lovely shrine to spend the day. Heard that the shrine is famous for matchmaking, and the wind chimes corridor is beautiful and the sounds from the wind chimes are soothing.
Lili C — Google review
Five stars for Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine. We came at night and the lantern-lit grounds felt serene and magical—quiet, spacious, and very stroller-friendly. We bought a souvenir chime blessed by a priest, and hearing it at home instantly brings us back to that beautiful evening. Thoughtful staff, peaceful atmosphere, and a perfect spot for families looking for something memorable after dark. Highly recommend.
Giovanni A — Google review
Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine feels like something straight out of a daydream — soft wind chimes tinkling, ribbons swaying, and sunlight filtering through the trees. Known as a shrine for love and good relationships, it draws couples and hopeful hearts from all over Japan. People tie little wooden plaques with wishes, or pull “love fortunes” wrapped in tiny, colorful fish — it’s charming and a bit magical.
Ivy N — Google review
The shrine has a huge torii at the back which is picture worthy. There were lots of traditional festive activities happening at the jinsha which tourist might be able to observe and enjoy. And if not, you can always enjoy shopping for lucky charm and gochuin.
Chris — Google review
A little far off the main street (about 15mins walk but not hard to navigate, although walking along the road with cars passing by can be a little scary). Interesting activities like “fishing” for luck and also the tunnel to explore. Nearby there is a canal which gives a rustic feel.
SeahYY — Google review
The temple is very serene and has a very pretty river flowing behind it. you can walk around and check out the area without going into the temple.

Kashiya Yokocho, also known as Penny Candy Alley, is a charming and lively shopping district in Kawagoe. This stone-paved alley is lined with traditional-style Japanese candy shops offering an array of treats such as sweet potato ice cream, rice crackers, cherry blossom candies, Nikki Ame (cinnamon sweets), and dagashi (cheap snacks). The area exudes the Edo atmosphere with its cobbled streets and warm ambiance.
Very beautiful city. The recommendation is Japanese sweet potate that tranformed to the dessert such as ice cream. The building is very beautiful and ancient. The city is ver clean.
Wantana P — Google review
Cute, small town! It is about 1 hr train ride from shinjuku. You have to buy this round trip pass. Look for Hon-Hawagoe express train. This way, the train doesn't make too many stops. From Hawagoe station, it's about a 15-minute walk. It's worth a day trip. There are plenty of delicious foods there.
Calvin N — Google review
Another great spot all within this little area. Many mini attractions making it worth walking through all the roads. This spot in general is known for the sweets and confectioneries.
KICKING C — Google review
The area is relatively peaceful and not large but is connected to the main shopping district. the kashiya yokocho area has few popular sweets store which you can get as souvenirs.
Arthur G — Google review
The main street, Kurazukuri Zone, is full of shops selling sweets, snacks, and souvenirs – don’t miss the freshly made sweet potato treats, a local specialty. The Toki no Kane (Time Bell Tower) is a must-see landmark that adds to the nostalgic vibe. Kashiya Yokocho, or Candy Alley, is a lot of fun, especially for kids and anyone with a sweet tooth. The Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine is another highlight, known for its love-themed charms and serene atmosphere. It’s an easy day trip from Tokyo and perfect for those who want a taste of traditional Japan without going too far. Highly recommend visiting for a relaxed and cultural experience
Wat J — Google review
A small alleyway with so many candy shops! The candies are cheap and so delicious (even for me that do not like sugar). Traditional candy! Please get the pineapple one 🍍
Daniel — Google review
This street has a nice variety of sweet shops. It wasn't an overwhelming number of shops. Unfortunately, some of the unique shops are closed on Monday and I went on a Monday. I recommend visiting this street if visiting the Kawagoe area.

Nice place to feel that old Japanese vibe. It is not as big as what you could find in Kyoto, but nice either way. If you have some days in Tokyo and want to see something Edoish, this is a good option

Kawagoe Kumano Shrine is a popular prayer site known for its unique rituals and activities. Visitors can participate in traditions such as washing money for increased wealth, throwing balls for good luck, and receiving blessings for successful matchmaking. The shrine also offers fortune-telling and features a visually appealing love fountain. Built in 1590, the shrine holds historical significance and is adorned with symbols like the Yatagarasu on lucky charms and wooden plates.
I came here during October 2023 Kawagoe Festival. The emblem of the shrine is the Yatagarasu (八咫烏) - three legged crow, which serves the great god Kumano (熊野). The place consists of many other small shrines along the main shrine. It also have a wide variety of charms and goshuins. When I came in the morning there weren’t many people but it quickly became crowded. There were also many festival’s food stall and game stall nearby.
Khanh N — Google review
A Shinto Shrine famous all over Japan for its three-legged crow you can find on the Japan National Soccer Squad jerseys' crest!
R-g M — Google review
This shrine is set back from the road slightly. The crow is the symbol of the shrine. Has some interesting small little places to look and enjoy. Amazing the crow and the various religious icons that are on display. The shrine is in the smaller side so done be disappointed if you are looking for a lathe scale shrine. It quirky and enjoyable!
Damien S — Google review
This shrine is located near Taisho Roman dori and right across Renkeiji temple. Famous shrine for matchmaking/love and also its Yatagarasu, it is visited by both locals and tourist all year round. It is only a walk away from famous tourist spots like Toki no Kane and Kashiya Yokocho. Also, it is a one ride bus away from Kawagoe station/Hon Kawagoe station. Don't forget to take a pic of the black and gold Yatagarasu.
夏美 — Google review
Five stars for Kawagoe Kumano Shrine. Small, serene, and beautifully kept, it’s an ideal pause between exploring Candy Alley and the warehouse district. We enjoyed strolling the lantern-lined paths, drawing an omikuji, and trying the pebble “foot health” walking path—fun and surprisingly soothing. Staff were kind, and the vibe stayed calm even in the afternoon. Tips: visit on a weekday for fewer people, bring cash for omamori/omikuji, and expect mostly stroller-friendly grounds (some gravel/low steps). A memorable, peaceful stop in Kawagoe.
Giovanni A — Google review
Cool shrine with an interesting activity for individual/couples/family. And one of the starting attractions of the main attraction street of kawagoe.
SeahYY — Google review
Lovely shrine and accessible for those on wheels. You can wash your money and pray to the white snake god for good fortune, and get a message from the three legged raven by touching a crystal ball. It was pretty busy on a Tuesday afternoon.
Alix — Google review
Very popular and crowded. The rest of Kawagoe had small crowds when I was there but this shrine was filled with people. There were many things to do which gave the shrine a carnival atmosphere, which is not what I expected or wanted. It was unique but not my cup of tea.

Hikawa Shrine is a serene and picturesque shrine located near Minami Furuya, just 30 minutes from Tokyo. The shrine is not only known for its tranquil atmosphere but also for the beautiful Shingashi River lined with 100 Homarezakura cherry blossoms, which were planted as a memorial to those who died in the war. While not directly part of the shrine, visitors can check the shrine's Facebook page to track the progress of these cherry blossoms during the season.

Nestled in the historic city of Kawagoe, Renkeiji Temple is a captivating Buddhist complex that invites visitors to immerse themselves in its tranquil atmosphere. With its stunning architecture and serene Zen gardens, this temple offers a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. As you wander through the grounds, you'll encounter beautifully crafted wooden structures and perhaps even find inspiration through Zen meditation practices offered on-site.
Awesome to be at during cherry blossom season. If you’re visiting the Taisho Roman Yume-dori, the bus stops here making it easy. The temple hosts random events and had a little flea market when I visited.
KICKING C — Google review
Another historical temple around the area. We happened to chance upon it and simply walk in for a visit. The compound wasn’t huge but I was capitulated by its architecture which was really refine. Truly an artistic piece of work. I spent only around 10-15 minutes there taking some pictures of the temple.
Gator — Google review
Five stars for Renkeiji Temple. We went for a family-friendly event in early September and had a wonderful time. The grounds felt welcoming, the food stalls were delicious, and the community spirit was strong—everyone was so nice. One tip: many vendors were cash-only, so bring cash (small bills help). A relaxed, wholesome outing for all ages.
Giovanni A — Google review
Very peaceful area. If you visit during the evening, along the same path of the entrance to another street, you can capture a very beautiful shot of the whole temple, decoration and sunset glow. it's absolutely stunning.
Arthur G — Google review
Simple temple which dates back to ancient history. Nothing spectacular but a good place to visit with fewer people. This temple also sells omamori (charms).
Tiffany D — Google review
This is a simple ancient Jodo temple built in the 16th century. Although it is not spectacular, it is rich in history in terms of the 3 founding priests. We visited Kawagoe in Spring and was extra blessed to have been able to view this historical site in all it's beauty. The sakura trees were in full bloom and added an extra ancient Japanese charm to the place. Simply loved it.

Traditional temple and you can see many people around in kimono. Similar to this temple many temples around to visit and candy shops. Overall I would give 4 rating.

Kawagoe City Museum is a historical gem located in the picturesque city of Kawagoe, Japan. Situated near the iconic Kawagoe Castle, this museum offers visitors a deep dive into the city's rich history as a castle town and its significance as a hub for water transportation. The museum also sheds light on the Great Kawagoe Fire of 1899, which played a pivotal role in shaping the unique storehouse-style townscape known as 'Little Edo.'
Excellent museum with summary descriptions in English- and use Google translate for even more information. Kawagoe itself is a lovely mix of traditional and new. Lots to see with museums and sites and a great selection of stores and restaurants. Yes, it can get busy so go early if possible, especially at weekends. Tourists take a day trip from Tokyo so time your visit accordingly! Free English speaking guides available too.

Very interesting and educational museum focusing on the history and culture of Kawagoe. It’s especially impactful when paired with a trip to the palace across the street. There is a huge scale model of what Kawagoe looked like about 150 years ago with interactive exhibits explaining the history. My husband and I are Japanese language beginners so we weren’t able to utilise the interactive exhibits but a very friendly worker spontaneously came over as we were looking at the scale model and explained everything in English which we found very kind. I recommend visiting the museum to learn about the history of the palace first and then heading over to palace itself. We spent about 45 minutes in the museum and quite enjoyed the variety of exhibits ranging from ancient to modern times. For its smaller size there is an impressive amount of exhibits. Temperate checks, masks and contact information are required for entry.

Crea Mall is a bustling business park with a pedestrian-only street that boasts a mix of traditional and modern shops, as well as restaurants and bars. The long shopping street offers an array of items for sale, making it a great place to browse while enroute to various tourist spots in Kawagoe. Despite its popularity, the area can get quite busy on weekends, so it's recommended to visit during the evening or on weekdays.
This is a review for the Kawagoe shopping district. It starts from Kawagoe station and extends about a 2km to the Ichibangai Shotengai historical district. Great shopping and eating district. Lots of restaurants and shops. Some unique foods on the street. Still very lively, but not overly crowded. I like it much better than the overly crowded tourist areas in Tokyo. Great place to visit when the weather is good.

Koedo Osatsuan is a popular spot in Kawagoe city known for its long, thin sweet potato chips. These chips are seasoned with a pinch of salt and have a natural sweetness that keeps customers coming back for more. The stand offers hand-made soy sauce for an additional fee to enhance the flavor of the chips. Located near the Bell Tower, this casual take-out nook often has long queues due to its popularity.
We order the mix of sweet potato, lotus root, potato bundle with salt butter is yummy!

A shop specializing in fried purple sweet potatoes, their main menu revolves around this local specialty. Offerings include fried purple sweet potatoes, purple sweet potato ice cream, and various other fried vegetables like pumpkin, lotus root, and sweet potatoes. The dishes are served in sets with a selection of dipping sauces. For a unique twist, you can even dip the fried items in the ice cream—it’s surprisingly delicious!

Don’t understand what was the hype. Normal crisps. Cannot really taste the salt or the caramel. Skip it if you don’t have time

An amazing snack to eat while you browse the streets and shops. The sweet potato chips come with many different sauces, I recommend the cream & black honey sauce! Service is really fast, so even if there is a long line, you will not wait for very long at all.

Famed for their thin long sweet potato chips, Koedo Osatsu An is a kiosk on the bell tower street in the Kawagoe store / warehouse district. There is almost always a queue for the potato chips and its the main reason I hadn't tasted them to date. We were lucky to pass by while the queue was short and took advantage. Definitely worth the hype. 500 yen for one bag of their chips. You can choose a sauce to go with, include in the price. The salty butter is the most popular, but I thought the chocolate cream was much nicer. They sell ice-cream as well. No indoor seating.

Kawagoe Aquatic Park offers a range of activities for visitors, including tennis courts, a jogging track, and swan-shaped pedal boats amidst colorful fall foliage. The park's summer pool features 2-meter waves and a platform for diving from a giant ship in the middle of the pool. Visitors can showcase their moves to friends viewing from large underwater windows on boats.

For the summer aquatic event, make sure to book at least a day in advance. Separate Locker rooms for men and women are available for 200 yen, and paid car parking is 840 yen. Don't forget to bring a sunshade or tent for comfort. It’s a great spot for a day of water fun!

Nice pools, you can enjoy the entire day, since there's places to grab food and drink. Be sure to take a tent with everything you need. It gets really crowded in summer, but it's so hot that you don't mind sharing the pool with the crowd.

Hidden Gems at Kawagoe. We have been to kawagoe many times but we didnt know about this park before. It takes about 15 min via bus to reach from Kawagoe station. It have lakes with boating available, sports venue like basketball court, tennis court. The park is huge and you can literally just lay down anywhere. Its away from town so the area is very peaceful. There is also water park with many slides and all, but unfortunately it was closed.

Bamboo Palm Zoo is a charming, privately-owned sanctuary that offers an intimate experience with around 30 different animal species. Each group is accompanied by a dedicated staff member to ensure you have a relaxed and enjoyable visit.
(Translated by Google) This is a hidden reservation-only zoo. This is a rare zoo where you can really interact with the animals. It looks like a private house has been renovated into a zoo. It's located in a secluded area at the end of a narrow road. If you are going for the first time, you may get lost before you arrive. I received a video guide from the store and was able to arrive without getting lost. A staff member will be assigned to each group, allowing you to have a relaxing experience. You will need to pay the entrance fee + petting and feeding fees for each animal you wish to visit. What I experienced this time was ·meerkat ・Toucan (bird) ・Palma wallaby ・kinkajou ・Fennec ・It's a seal. The premises are a little small, but you can enjoy interacting with each animal in a room in an air-conditioned private house. In a sense, it's innovative...lol However, the level of contact is not just touching. You can put the bird on your arm and throw the food over it for them to catch, and the fennec and kinkajous can be held and petted as much as they want. Seals can perform tricks and you can get a kiss on the cheek. This is a level of experience that would be difficult to experience at a normal zoo, and I think it would be possible only if the staff treated them well and if they were not used to being around people from an early age. Kinkajous are just so cute. We highly recommend feeding and interacting with kinkajous. It was a special experience. I wasn't able to touch all the animals, so I would like to visit again someday. We pray for the health of the animals. (Translated by Google) This is a handmade zoo made mainly out of a single house. The entrance is quite difficult to find, but once you're inside there are lots of animals. I visited to see Momo the marmot. Momo is apparently one of the marmots that is quite used to people, so as expected, I was able to pet her as much as I wanted. I recommend Fluffy. Animal food costs 500 yen and comes in a huge portion, so I doubt I'll be able to finish it all in the time I spent there. When I visited, I was able to interact with Momo as well as woodchucks and owls, which was very satisfying. It was Saturday, but perhaps because it was late, there were no other customers, so we were lucky to have a private tour. The guide's explanations were easy to understand and the tour format was fun. I got to hold a kinkajous and a fennec fox for a fee, and both were used to bettas and were cute. The Alpine marmot had an interesting face, and it curled up right away, hiding its face, and because it only lasted for a moment, it seemed rare. The other animals are also cute and nice. I was very impressed as I had never been able to touch an owl so closely. (When I looked into other owl cafes, the prices were high and I didn't think they would touch them much.) Some areas were closed due to rain, but we still had a lot of fun. Next time, I would like to go on a sunny day and enter the Fureai Square. Glass Art Blue Moon is a charming spot located in an Edo period storehouse where children over the age of five can create their own glass art. Situated in a tourist area near the Ichibangai pedestrian crossing, this place offers reasonably priced pottery classes suitable for all ages. Additionally, visitors can explore various crafting options such as Turkish lamps, chalkboard art, jewelry making, and gel candle crafting.
I took my girls and their friend (all Japanese speakers) to this place! A wonderful experience and great memories made. The instructors were so kind and helpful every step of the way! The products were delivered 24 hours later! Definitely recommend this business!

Chose this as a rainy day/typhoon day activity. It was my first try at glass blowing and the owner and staff were extremely helpful in guiding me how to do the process. They really make sure you understand before giving you the ropes to try it yourself. The process takes at most 45 mins if you add many colors and choose a difficult design. The staff also recommended a shoyu tour which is free and recommended a good restaurant for my friend and I to eat at. Overall I was satisfied with this place, bit one star down because we couldn't use the Go To Travel Campaign even though there was a mention of it on their website.

I went on a cold day, but it was so hot around the furnace. However, it will be cold while you wait, so I think it would be a good idea to put something you can wear in your luggage. Sandals, shoes, and heels are not recommended. It's a lot of fun to customize the glass by adding marble patterns or bubbles. It's a worthwhile challenge because the colors overlap and the finished color may differ from the actual color. This time, we have a cup with bubbles and two colors of marble, and a vase with bubbles and a single color. Even if you can't do it properly, you don't have to worry about it because they will make adjustments so that the cup will stand properly. It will be ready in two weeks. Delivery possible.
