Nestled on an island in Lake Schwerin, the captivating Schwerin Castle is a stunning example of Neo-Renaissance architecture. This fairy-tale castle boasts ornate rooms and houses a remarkable European art collection. The town of Schwerin itself is steeped in history, offering cobbled streets, historic buildings, and serene lakeside views.
Was a nice day at the castle, the outside was more beautiful than the inside for us. The weather was great so made the atmosphere even better, I have to say seems like this part of Germany is the beautiful part. Definitely recommend visiting!
Tashi — Google review
Really beautiful castle. Courtyard is lovely to sit in as well. Live music during our visit. The Outside is quite lovely to walk around. Be sure to check out the gardens!
Melissa M — Google review
What a beautiful castle. We didn’t have time to view inside unfortunately, but the surrounding landscape and grounds were magnificent. This is definitely worth visiting, as too, the town itself. Very picturesque.
Wesley M — Google review
The castle was majestic and there were just the right number of people on a weekend. There was no queue to get the tickets on the day we went and we also managed to get a guided English tour. While we waited for the tour, we walked to the restaurant (called the Orangerie) which was in a very picturesque courtyard with a sea view. Our tour guide was very informative and gave us a lot of interesting facts and insight into the life of royalty during that Era. Not all the rooms were open for public viewing, as many were being used for the regional parliament. But the ones that were open, were really beautiful and were maintained very well. Definitely worth a visit!
Ranjani G — Google review
Beautiful Castle! However quite a lot of people there. The Tour is great and you can also borrow a chair so you can sit at all times. The Corridors are sometimes very narrow and some Tour guides are speaking rather quietly (for me personally was it not too bad, however for some people [especially older] was it a problem) so you can’t stand too far away from them. Overall a great place!!!
Aimée R — Google review
Absolutely stunning on the outside... Self-guided tour... which is definitely handy when visiting with children. Although I was slightly disappointed by how limited the tour proved to be, in comparison with the size of the castle itself. There are also lifts and I noticed a wheelchair lift at a small staircase towards the end of our tour, so I suspect it has good or at least decent accessibility, as well. Place is fairly busy in general... so, crowded, but because it's a big place, it didn't feel overcrowded.
Penelope R — Google review
Schwerin Slot is a very beautiful place to visit. We just stop by on the way to Denmark. I would like to say, the garden is very attractive, we wish we could stay til the sunset, so it will be turn into a fairy palace. Somehow, it will be better if audioguide are ready for guests coming in, there was not even one available for us, when we got in.
Corrina S — Google review
Visiting Schwerin Castle felt like stepping straight into a fairytale. Surrounded by a shimmering lake and beautifully kept gardens, the castle looks magical from every angle. The architecture is breathtaking, with its golden domes and towers rising proudly above the water. Definitely a must-see if you’re in northern Germany – whether for the history, the scenery, or simply the fairytale charm. 🏰

Museums
Nestled on the east side of Alter Garten, directly across from the Mecklenburg State Theater, lies the Staatliches Museum Schwerin. This remarkable art museum boasts a stunning blend of historic and modern architecture, featuring its original Neoclassical Haupthaus built in 1882 alongside a contemporary structure that opened in 2016, connected by an elegant glass walkway. Visitors to this cultural gem can immerse themselves in an impressive array of artworks spanning from the Middle Ages to modern times.
A great collection of both modern and classical art and paintings. The art gallery is absolutely outstanding. The museum is very close to the castle, it is both fascinating and full of amazing information about the land of my forefathers. Worth to visit.
Sergii P — Google review
A very nice museum with excellent works from Danish, Dutch and local artists. A good mix of old and new. Wonderful works of portraits, landscape, still-life and modern-contemporary. Parking is nearby, the admission price is very reasonable, free lockers in the basement and friendly staff.
R H — Google review
I was there for the first time in April and enjoyed the exhibits. But went back last month to check out the additional new building and I was extremely disappointed. Nothing was new. Basically the same exhibits were more spread out in the old and new space. Plus, before the new building, the entrance fee was 4€ and now it is 8,5€ per person. Absolute waste of money for the second time.
Ana M — Google review
Good collection and friendly staff. The permanent collection is worth seeing. (4 stars) Edit: After going back once the new wing opened, I left extremely disappointed. It's a useless addition to the museum. Almost all of the art that is in the new wing was originally in the permanent collection and has just been moved over to fill up space. I will not be going back to the new wing.

Zoos & Aquariums
Zoo Schwerin, located in the south of the state capital Schwerin, is a medium-sized year-round zoo that attracts almost 217,000 visitors annually. The zoo spans about 25 hectares and is home to over 2118 animals from 144 species. Visitors can observe a wide variety of animals including elephants, tigers, giraffes, lemurs, and kangaroos in their natural habitats.
This zoo is very beautiful and well maintained. We needed about 3 hours to see it in its entirety. Very kind staff. For the first time I had the opportunity to buy food for the animals and to be able to feed them on the spot in the zoo, I have never seen such an option at the zoo before, it's a very interesting thing, especially for those who come with small children.
Dumitru T — Google review
They had a lot of baby animals which I have never seen before. Like a lion cup, many different monkey babys, rhino baby. It was amazing how many animal babies this Zoo had and how calm the animal mommy's were. They were not scared of humans and seemed to enjoy raising the small ones. A lot of animals were playing and had plenty of space for themselves. We really had great time there.

Always liked visiting the zoo, but now I love it. They changed so much and it actually shocked me. Great place to visit with your kids.

Theaters
In the heart of Schwerin's Alter Garten, you'll find the Mecklenburg State Theatre, a stunning Neo-Renaissance building dating back to 1886. With its main theater capable of seating 650 guests and a smaller stage for puppet shows and kid-friendly events, this theater offers a diverse range of performances including plays, operas, musicals, and ballet. The grand-ducal ambiance is complemented by modern comfort with plush armchairs and ornate decor.
Was there to watch with my kid "Zauberer der Smaragdstadt" (or something like this) on 23rd Dec. 18 & we had a lot of fun. The actors were passionate about their roles & the costumes were great. You really just gotta make sure you pay for better seatings or otherwise you won't have much fun since you can't see in worst case nothing OR have to STAND durimg the whole play. Luckily our seats were OK.

Schleifmühle Schwerin is a hidden gem in the city, offering a unique experience for visitors. This old water mill, dating back to 1704, provides insight into historical milling technology and working conditions of the past. The museum is highly recommended by many due to its enthusiastic guides who passionately explain the mill's operations. Situated close to the castle gardens, it offers a lovely setting for visitors to admire from the outside.
Interesting little museum, nice couple presenting the working mill

We had an unexpectedly great time here. We visit old wind and watermills a lot and usually love looking at the old technology. Here we expected another nice visit but instead it was wonderful, due to the two excellent and enthusiastic guides, who took their time to explain the workings of the mills and the working conditions endured in the past. Highly recommend this museum!

Löwendenkmal Schwerin is a significant sculpture by Peter Lenk, created in 1995 to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of Schwerin's founding. The statue depicts a lion on a fifteen-foot pedestal, symbolizing the historical rebellion of the people against Duke Henry. It stands in homage to Henry the Lion, the city's founder, and is located on the market square near Neues Gebaude.

(Translated by Google) The monument, erected in 1995 in honor of Schwerin's founder, Henry the Lion, adorns a central square in the city - similar to the Lion of San Marco in Venice. 👍 If you take a closer look at the four relief panels attached to the column, you can see some interesting, unexpected and perhaps surprising details from Henry's life. 👍😉

Somehow unique and good... definitely check it out, google the story and form your own opinion! I kind of like it.
Rene F — Google review
(Translated by Google) This lion is not just a decoration – it is the medieval “logo” of the city, which reminds us who once ruled here. It is the symbol of Henry the Lion (Heinrich des Löwen), who was one of the most powerful princes of the Reich in the 12th century.
Justyna J — Google review
(Translated by Google) It is a statue of a Lion. To understand it you need a little history: From its four and a half meter pedestal, the lion smiles evilly at the square, whose history dates back to the time when Schwerin was founded in 1160. For centuries, the market was the political, economic and religious center of the city, only here the merchants of Schwerin were allowed to exchange food and craft products in the time of Heinrich the Lion. The monument to the founder of the city, was inaugurated in the market in 1995, with four episodes depicted in the life of Heinrich, one of the four images carved in stone, the so-called parade of buttocks, shows the bare buttocks, which the citizens of Bardowick are said to have shown to the passing duke. Schwerin and Lübeck were important commercial centers during his reign, while Bardowick became increasingly less important. The other images on the column tell a satirical and critical account of the crusade in 1147, the founding of Schwerin in 1160 and the creation of the Braunschweig lion as a symbol of Heinrich's reign in the Braunschweig residence. That said, it is an interesting statue and a must-see in the city, since it is in the square with the cathedral and next to the town hall.

The Schwerin Victory Column, located in front of Schwerin Castle, serves as a commemoration of the fallen soldiers in the war between Prussia and France in 1870/71. The Prussians emerged victorious with the support of their German allies. This landmark forms a picturesque ensemble with the Old Garden and the magnificent castle garden, creating a beautiful unit worth visiting.
A beautiful column right before you get to the Schwerin Castle. Enjoyed our visit. Sits around a beautiful garden by the lake.

The Open Air Museum of Ethnography Schwerin Mueß, also known as Freilichtmuseum & Geschichtliche Sammlungen, is a fascinating attraction that offers an interesting collection of original historic buildings from the 19th century. Situated in the former fishing and farming village of Muess, this open-air museum showcases farmhouses, barns, a blacksmith shop, bakery, school, vegetable garden, and more.
This outdoor museum does a great job of depicting the lifestyle of people who lived in the area years ago. I loved walking around in the garden and going inside various buildings. The cafe is also a pleasant place with lovely roses in front. I highly recommend this museum to everyone! It's a fun educational experience.

Really nice open air place with old German museum artifacts
Fraz A — Google review
Well done, much to see, an acceptable cafeteria, lot of open space, the buildings are not crammed into each other - mostly because the place is as it was, and not like many other similar open air museums - buildings brought there and built next to others. Thus, it has a more natural atmosphere. It can be quiet (if there aren't many children about), and very relaxing. It did feel a bit like a time travel, which is, I believe, the main idea. Been there twice in a month, and we'll be there in spring for sure, ar least once more.
Dragomir Z — Google review
It is a nice open air museum, ideal for hanging out with kids. Besides old farm houses, some century old machinery and centuries old tools, I liked the old Smith as well as the old school building. If you want to travel back in time for a bit, this would be a good place to begin with. I would love, if they would go the extra mile and engage in some actual story building for children. Maybe we could follow the footsteps of a (real or fictional) family for a day. The cafe serves some basics and offers decent snacks. If you are not there for cakes, do not expect anything special though.

Museum Schloss Schwerin is a must-visit attraction, offering access to 635 rooms filled with treasures. Managed by the Staatliches Museum Schwerin, it also houses the Ducal art collection in a separate location. Visitors can explore exquisitely furnished ballrooms and private apartments, gaining insight into the opulent lifestyle of the Dukes who once resided there. The picturesque castle is surrounded by beautiful gardens and offers audio tours for a nominal fee.
Beautiful castle a must see. Small admission required and can be busy on select days. Cafes available and wonderful outdoor spaces. Audio tours are available for a nominal fee.

A picturesque castle surrounded by beautiful gardens. There is a fair admission price to the castle itself.

Amazing castle

Super. Good condition. A lot of Stuff to view. The Park IS insane and you feel Like you are traveling Into the past Into an Fantasy world...
Mario K — Google review
The castle itself and it's interior is absolutely stunning. The museum gives a good look into it's luxurious living quarters. However the museums didactic concept itself is quite oudated. Very text heavy (only German) on bleak signs. No child or family friendly descriptions. Interesting details on the early modern waterpump and heating system. Texts on biographic events of notable lord's and lady's (often to long and overwhelming to read them all). Yet without historic and geopolitical placement of the castle and it's ruling family. Not enough information about the previous castles and the history and archaeology of the early-medieval Slavic castle the modern castle was build upon.

Located within the castle gardens of Schwerin Castle, Grotte im Schlossgarten is a picturesque and historic structure that has stood for over a century. Built from stacked stones, this grotto offers a cool retreat in warm temperatures and serves as a popular photo spot. Visitors can walk through the grotto to access the rear part of the palace garden, where benches provide an ideal vantage point to admire views of Lake Schwerin.
Loved this stone maze, wish it was bigger to explore

The Grotto at the bottom or end of the castle grounds are really nice thing to see. A part of it overlooks the lake and is a beautiful view.

(Translated by Google) This grotto is almost magical. It's beautifully designed and juts out into the lake. When the sun shines, the sunlight streams beautifully through the grotto's openings. It's also said to be a home for bats.

Casino
Spielbank Schwerin is a German casino that sets itself apart from arcades by often enforcing a specific dress code and offering more than just slot machines. It typically includes games like poker, roulette, and blackjack. To be called a "casino," it must belong to a state-owned gambling establishment, paying concession fees to the government. In Schwerin, this casino provides an opportunity for visitors to enjoy an entertaining evening during their stay.
(Translated by Google) Nice atmosphere, lots of different machines, good coffee, friendly staff, smoking area... you couldn't ask for more... and yes, sometimes things don't go well when it comes to winnings... that's why they call it gambling... keep it up 🤗 (Original) Schöne Atmosphäre, viele verschiedene Automaten, guter Kaffee, nettes Personal, Raucherbereich... mehr kann man sich kaum wünschen... und ja mal läuft es nicht gut, was Gewinne angeht...deswegen nennt man es ja Glücksspiel... weiter so 🤗

(Translated by Google) The employees are super nice and do everything to make you feel comfortable. They are happy to give tips! The bad thing, however, is that all the 20 cent players sometimes play 6 machines at the same time and you have no chance of getting a machine. It's always the same players. If you ask politely whether you can also have a machine, you'll be told no. I won't be visiting this hall again for this reason... Man gibt gerne Trinkgeld!

(Translated by Google) A great casino in itself with many gaming options. The service is also very commendable. You see other players playing there every day. Sometimes one player occupies six machines. People put €10-20 in everywhere so no one else can play. A real negative point.

(Translated by Google) The employees are very nice, courteous and helpful, the ashtrays are emptied every 20 minutes and at the same time asked for drinks 3 stars but unfortunately no matter where you go the casino hardly gives any winnings the last few times I always came away empty-handed but unfortunately I have to say that it's just the game of luck I don't understand some players why they sometimes hit the buttons with their fist and sometimes break the machines as a result of which they don't give any more or then they just throw their smoked cigarettes on the floor Employees feel like they're racing wolf to keep everything in shape and yet it's still a very nice casino (Original) Die Angestellten sind sehr nett zuvorkommend und hilfsbereit gefühlt werden alle 20 Minuten die Ascher leer gemacht und in gleichzug nach Getränken gefragt 3 Sterne aber leider nur egal wo man hin geht wirft das Casino noch kaum Gewinne ab die letzten Male bin ich immer leer ausgegangen aber da muss ich leider sagen das das nun mal das Spiel mit den Glück ist da verstehe ich einige Spieler nicht warum sie die Knöpfe teilweise mit Faust rein schlagen und die Automaten teilweise kaputt machen dadurch geben sie auch nicht mehr oder dann einfach ihre aufgerauchten Zigaretten auf den Boden werfen die angestellten laufen sich gefühlt ein Wolf um alles auf Vordermann zu halten und trotzdem ist es immer noch ein sehr schönes Casino

(Translated by Google) The staff is great. And in general, a well-arranged hall. As for the profits... That's already half the world.

(Translated by Google) It's outrageous that we're suddenly expected to pay for drinks. In a casino where you spend hundreds of euros, you get ripped off for €2.60 for a 0.2l drink, when on such a hot summer day you'd drink five or more. Not even the motorway service station is that outrageously overpriced. I want to put the money in the slot machine, not spend it on a measly little Coke. After five years at the Schwerin casino, I'm going back to the west; they still value their guests. And they even serve lunch and snacks. Never again a Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania casino!

(Translated by Google) We always enjoyed coming here. But lately, it's not been fun coming here. Every time a woman sits on three machines, you can't get any machines. You never get free machines. A few people sit on multiple machines... and the staff say there's nothing we can do today, everyone can play on multiple machines. We were very disappointed... and we'll never come back here. Anywhere else you're only allowed to play on one machine, and they always give you free machines. It's no fun coming here... never come back here. (Original) Wir Waren immer gerne hier.
