Nestled on an island in Lake Schwerin, the captivating Schwerin Castle is a stunning example of Neo-Renaissance architecture. This fairy-tale castle boasts ornate rooms and houses a remarkable European art collection. The town of Schwerin itself is steeped in history, offering cobbled streets, historic buildings, and serene lakeside views.
Was a nice day at the castle, the outside was more beautiful than the inside for us. The weather was great so made the atmosphere even better, I have to say seems like this part of Germany is the beautiful part. Definitely recommend visiting!
Tashi — Google review
Really beautiful castle. Courtyard is lovely to sit in as well. Live music during our visit. The Outside is quite lovely to walk around. Be sure to check out the gardens!
Melissa M — Google review
What a beautiful castle. We didn’t have time to view inside unfortunately, but the surrounding landscape and grounds were magnificent. This is definitely worth visiting, as too, the town itself. Very picturesque.
Wesley M — Google review
The castle was majestic and there were just the right number of people on a weekend. There was no queue to get the tickets on the day we went and we also managed to get a guided English tour. While we waited for the tour, we walked to the restaurant (called the Orangerie) which was in a very picturesque courtyard with a sea view. Our tour guide was very informative and gave us a lot of interesting facts and insight into the life of royalty during that Era. Not all the rooms were open for public viewing, as many were being used for the regional parliament. But the ones that were open, were really beautiful and were maintained very well. Definitely worth a visit!
Ranjani G — Google review
Beautiful Castle! However quite a lot of people there. The Tour is great and you can also borrow a chair so you can sit at all times. The Corridors are sometimes very narrow and some Tour guides are speaking rather quietly (for me personally was it not too bad, however for some people [especially older] was it a problem) so you can’t stand too far away from them. Overall a great place!!!
Aimée R — Google review
Absolutely stunning on the outside... Self-guided tour... which is definitely handy when visiting with children. Although I was slightly disappointed by how limited the tour proved to be, in comparison with the size of the castle itself. There are also lifts and I noticed a wheelchair lift at a small staircase towards the end of our tour, so I suspect it has good or at least decent accessibility, as well. Place is fairly busy in general... so, crowded, but because it's a big place, it didn't feel overcrowded.
Penelope R — Google review
Schwerin Slot is a very beautiful place to visit. We just stop by on the way to Denmark. I would like to say, the garden is very attractive, we wish we could stay til the sunset, so it will be turn into a fairy palace. Somehow, it will be better if audioguide are ready for guests coming in, there was not even one available for us, when we got in.
Corrina S — Google review
Visiting Schwerin Castle felt like stepping straight into a fairytale. Surrounded by a shimmering lake and beautifully kept gardens, the castle looks magical from every angle. The architecture is breathtaking, with its golden domes and towers rising proudly above the water. Definitely a must-see if you’re in northern Germany – whether for the history, the scenery, or simply the fairytale charm. 🏰

Museums
Nestled on the east side of Alter Garten, directly across from the Mecklenburg State Theater, lies the Staatliches Museum Schwerin. This remarkable art museum boasts a stunning blend of historic and modern architecture, featuring its original Neoclassical Haupthaus built in 1882 alongside a contemporary structure that opened in 2016, connected by an elegant glass walkway. Visitors to this cultural gem can immerse themselves in an impressive array of artworks spanning from the Middle Ages to modern times.
A great collection of both modern and classical art and paintings. The art gallery is absolutely outstanding. The museum is very close to the castle, it is both fascinating and full of amazing information about the land of my forefathers. Worth to visit.
Sergii P — Google review
A very nice museum with excellent works from Danish, Dutch and local artists. A good mix of old and new. Wonderful works of portraits, landscape, still-life and modern-contemporary. Parking is nearby, the admission price is very reasonable, free lockers in the basement and friendly staff.
R H — Google review
I was there for the first time in April and enjoyed the exhibits. But went back last month to check out the additional new building and I was extremely disappointed. Nothing was new. Basically the same exhibits were more spread out in the old and new space. Plus, before the new building, the entrance fee was 4€ and now it is 8,5€ per person. Absolute waste of money for the second time.
Ana M — Google review
Good collection and friendly staff. The permanent collection is worth seeing. (4 stars) Edit: After going back once the new wing opened, I left extremely disappointed. It's a useless addition to the museum. Almost all of the art that is in the new wing was originally in the permanent collection and has just been moved over to fill up space. I will not be going back to the new wing.

In the heart of Schwerin's Alter Garten, you'll find the Mecklenburg State Theatre, a stunning Neo-Renaissance building dating back to 1886. With its main theater capable of seating 650 guests and a smaller stage for puppet shows and kid-friendly events, this theater offers a diverse range of performances including plays, operas, musicals, and ballet. The grand-ducal ambiance is complemented by modern comfort with plush armchairs and ornate decor.
Was there to watch with my kid "Zauberer der Smaragdstadt" (or something like this) on 23rd Dec. 18 & we had a lot of fun. The actors were passionate about their roles & the costumes were great. You really just gotta make sure you pay for better seatings or otherwise you won't have much fun since you can't see in worst case nothing OR have to STAND durimg the whole play. Luckily our seats were OK.

The Open Air Museum of Ethnography Schwerin Mueß, also known as Freilichtmuseum & Geschichtliche Sammlungen, is a fascinating attraction that offers an interesting collection of original historic buildings from the 19th century. Situated in the former fishing and farming village of Muess, this open-air museum showcases farmhouses, barns, a blacksmith shop, bakery, school, vegetable garden, and more.
This outdoor museum does a great job of depicting the lifestyle of people who lived in the area years ago. I loved walking around in the garden and going inside various buildings. The cafe is also a pleasant place with lovely roses in front. I highly recommend this museum to everyone! It's a fun educational experience.

Oh ya,the staff are very friendly ,the cafe inside this museum serves very good cappuccino and many other drinks and super delicious cakes. I will visit this place again when I am in Germany again
Katy H — Google review
Really nice open air place with old German museum artifacts
Fraz A — Google review
Well done, much to see, an acceptable cafeteria, lot of open space, the buildings are not crammed into each other - mostly because the place is as it was, and not like many other similar open air museums - buildings brought there and built next to others. Thus, it has a more natural atmosphere. It can be quiet (if there aren't many children about), and very relaxing. It did feel a bit like a time travel, which is, I believe, the main idea. Been there twice in a month, and we'll be there in spring for sure, ar least once more.
Dragomir Z — Google review
It is a nice open air museum, ideal for hanging out with kids. Besides old farm houses, some century old machinery and centuries old tools, I liked the old Smith as well as the old school building. If you want to travel back in time for a bit, this would be a good place to begin with. I would love, if they would go the extra mile and engage in some actual story building for children. Maybe we could follow the footsteps of a (real or fictional) family for a day. The cafe serves some basics and offers decent snacks. If you are not there for cakes, do not expect anything special though.

The castle itself and it's interior is absolutely stunning. The museum gives a good look into it's luxurious living quarters. However the museums didactic concept itself is quite oudated. Very text heavy (only German) on bleak signs. No child or family friendly descriptions. Interesting details on the early modern waterpump and heating system. Texts on biographic events of notable lord's and lady's (often to long and overwhelming to read them all). Yet without historic and geopolitical placement of the castle and it's ruling family. Not enough information about the previous castles and the history and archaeology of the early-medieval Slavic castle the modern castle was build upon.

(Translated by Google) The Castle Church in Schwerin Castle – A Heavenly Gem Anyone who visits Schwerin Castle will inevitably be enchanted by its fairytale silhouette. But hidden within, on the north side of the castle island, lies a jewel that stands out even among the castle's golden towers: the Castle Church. Architecture & Atmosphere The Castle Church is a masterpiece of the Renaissance and Neo-Gothic periods, nestled into the castle façade with its gray sandstone and delicate tracery. Its Gothic windows, gargoyles, and spires are reminiscent of Cologne Cathedral – no wonder, since the famous cathedral architect Ernst Friedrich Zwirner was involved in its Neo-Gothic redesign. Upon entering the church, a space resembling a canopy of stars opens up: a deep blue sky dotted with golden stars arches above the visitor. The stone galleries, supported by sturdy sandstone columns, give the interior the feel of a three-aisled hall church. Angel figures, biblical motifs, and artfully painted ornaments speak of the Protestant theme of redemption and invite quiet wonder. Historical Significance The Castle Church is not only an architectural gem, but also a significant site of the Reformation: It is considered the first Protestant church building in Mecklenburg. Duke Johann Albrecht I had it built in 1560 – a symbol of the changing times and the new spiritual direction. The pulpit, a copy of the famous Torgau pulpit, and the Renaissance altar testify to the close connection to Lutheran tradition. Vibrant Spirituality Today, the Castle Church is not just a monument, but a vibrant place of faith. Regular services, baptisms, and weddings fill it with life. It is especially popular as a romantic wedding venue – those who say "I do" under the golden starry sky do so in one of the most beautiful sacred spaces in Northern Germany. The Castle Church in Schwerin Castle is a place where history, art, and spirituality blend in perfect harmony. A visit is like stepping into another world—silent, sublime, and deeply moving.

The atmosphere of the real Prague. Very tasty food and the service of the staff is beyond praise. 4 stars for the food only because the meat was a bit dry and the sauce over-salted. But still worth a try!

Stylish Spot with Great Cakes & Gin Café Prag is a beautiful place to unwind — elegant interiors, a perfect location, and a really relaxing vibe. Tried the Gin & Tonic (excellent!) and the Orangina lemonade (less impressive). But the real highlight? Their cake selection — absolutely worth it. The staff were polite and welcoming, which made the experience even better. A classy little gem in Schwerin!

The place was great. It was Sunday and that time it was perfect because there are 2 guys baskin infront so you have the live music plus a relaxing day. But the old lady who attended us was a bit rude. We sat and ordered but we changed our table just beside the first one we sat down. When she got back with our order and saw us on another table, she was so upset and kicked the chair and murmuring. I understand that each table have its own number w/c corresponds to your bill after but hello i think her reaction was exaggerated. And there were not a lot of people that time. Anyway aside from the old lady, it was still a good day.

There are four jetties, two on the western side and two on the eastern side, which are approached in sequence. Depending on what the ferry is like, I've already walked around the Pfaffenteich twice before I can get on board. If you like boating, you'll definitely like this. I think running is healthier anyway 👣 (Original) Eine kleine Fähre, mit der man sich für 2,00€ (Kinder von 3-14 Jahre 1,00€) über den Pfaffenteich fahren lassen kann. Town square
Located just south of the cathedral, Am Markt is Schwerin's historic marketplace that was constructed after the city's great fire in 1651. The square is surrounded by four listed buildings and newer post-war houses designed with Baroque and Renaissance styles. One notable monument on the north side of the square is the market hall Neues Gebaude (New Building), which dates back to 1783.

(Translated by Google) Today, on Tuesday, I had an appointment made; I needed a new resident parking permit. There were only 2 people behind the counters who didn't seem to want to work. Despite the appointment, I arrived very late. The waiting room was full and one worker was just talking on the phone at a snail's pace and didn't give a damn about the people waiting and the other was constantly in the toilet. I have never met such a lousy work ethic. There are a lot of job seekers, it might be time for a change.

(Translated by Google) The general deficiencies of the German bureaucratic monster are evident. However, everything has gone smoothly for me so far; today I was even able to complete my appointment immediately, despite being 15 minutes late.

(Translated by Google) I urgently needed a health certificate from the City Hall. I went to the reception desk during opening hours with my request. Oh, and no appointment. The really friendly young man asked if I could speak to the clerk for me. Thank you, thank you, for your help! The young man in the white shirt and beard was incredibly helpful. I would also like to thank Ms. Haker for her quick help and kindness. There are still friendly, empathetic, and helpful people out there. A BIG thank you.

(Translated by Google) Too incompetent for anything. Speed cameras are used in unnecessary places because the city has even less money than a citizen's allowance recipient. Parking meters and resident parking permits are incredibly expensive, as if Schwerin were a metropolis like Hamburg or Berlin. The streets look like slums because there seems to be no city cleaning service, but the main thing is that they can claim to be a World Heritage Site. In some places, entire streets are unlit, so women are afraid to walk outside. Some drivers even turn on their rear fog lights so they can be seen.

(Translated by Google) If employees work from home three days a week, it's no wonder the service is so dismal. Either no one answers the phone, or they say, "I don't have the files available right now."
