It was a bright but breezy afternoon. We’d walked around 5km and were disappointed when we found the regular tourist pub in Dymchurch closed. I asked a local if there was another pub and he direct us to the Ship. What good fortune for us was the closed tourist pub and that chance recommendation from a local 😊 The Ship is around 1km from central Dymchurch towards Hythe, just off the main road on the beach-side. It’s a charming and welcoming family orientated pub, frequented by locals, hotel residents and some tourists. It’s far enough out of town to buffer it from casual beachgoers, a fact we see as a genuine bonus. There is some external seating and there are plenty of tables inside, both in the pub and restaurant area for those staying for a meal. The pub area is dog-friendly. The menu is interesting and varied, but sufficiently limited to ensure that dishes are available and freshly prepared. We had decided on a light supper so chose the fish and chips, wagyu burger, scampi and peri chicken skewers. The meals all arrived simultaneously and were piping hot and well presented. They were all good-sized portions. The staff on duty were caring and attentive, without being encroaching, ensuring that we were comfortable and happy with our supper. The meal was great value overall and we had a faultless, comfortable dining experience. We would definitely return to the Ship on our next summer visit to Kent. 5 stars for sure! We had a booking for 5 people and were put on a table in a corner which had hardly any room so we were all pretty squashed in. When we asked to move to a larger table, we were told that it had been reserved, but was still empty when we left, so we could have been moved. Food was pretty ordinary didnt have the wow factor at all. And very overpriced for what it is. Would I recommend this place, probably not. Would I visit again....maybe for a drink but definitely not for food. Update : after giving a genuine review, I have been accused by the ship inn of making a false review which is not professional at all when my review was my own opinion of the experience. I repeat again, the food was ordinary and didn't have the wow factor for me. That's my opinion that I am perfectly entitled to. Had to explain in detail as to why he needed to reduce the bill by more because of the long wait - his excuse was that he was short staffed in the kitchen , but there was a steady flow of Takeaway orders going out the door , as he prioritized Telephone & Online Bookings over Dine In Customers. My advice is that if you book a table by phone or online for a certain time , place your order at the same time , that way , hopefully the wait won’t be so long. There are so many authentic Turkish options to choose from on the menu, however, they have a range of familiar foods (chips, nuggets, burger) for younger children who may be fussy eaters. The atmosphere was great and the servers were so kind, making sure everything was ok and finding the time to stop and talk after the meal. The meal came with a complimentary starter of flat bread, salad and sauces; something not many other places do. The main meals were great, a real plus point is the fact that the meals were not swimming in oil, like some other Turkish restaurants do. Good portion sizes and cooked to perfection. If that isn't poor staff management I don't know what is. After several conversations with head office, I was then offered £50 compensation then to be upped to £70 after being insulted. Situated further inland near Appledore, we found The Ferry Inn a dog friendly restaurant, for well behaved dogs, specialising in locally sourced food - perfect! That said there was plenty of other options, if desired including a reasonable dessert selection. The decor is traditionally English pub style, as you would expect and the service was great from the lovely ladies working hard too. The seating area was bright and airy with a nice covered roaring log fire to boot. They even had QR codes for free WiFi on the table map! Car park was a good size but can get busy with ramblers walking around the marshes. We even had a flying visit by a local helicopter pilot, using the helipad opposite! Overall a pleasant experience and would definitely visit again....4/5
