I’ve had takeout from this place once before while visiting Indy but this was my first time eating there in person and I was not disappointed! This is the only place I like “sushi” from because they have vegan options that aren’t just plain tofu or cucumber. As someone who has never liked/eaten ANY seafood I was really excited to get to try something closer to real sushi. On top of that our server Kei was absolutely amazing. So knowledgeable of the menu and both the vegan and regular sushi. She made suggestions, showed us her faves and brought me a little birthday treat! I haven’t had a roll I didn’t like but I loved the vegan bbq eel tempura. She for sure made our lunch special. Sakura is definitely one of those undercover gems on Indy’s north side. I’ve driven by it a lot but never stopped in. I got to do so recently. Walked in at around 5:45 on a Friday and they were a little busy but we got a table. Our waitress was SUPER friendly and attentive to our table. We started with the Gyoza and the Spicy Ika Rings (calamari basically) as an appetizer. All of that was fantastic! As my entree, I got the Chicken Katsu Don. Now, I did notice a lot of reviews complaining of slow service. However, it only took about 25 minutes for all our food to arrive. And overall, the food was fantastic! The chicken was tender and tasty, the eggs were good, though I will say they did put a bit too much rice in the bowl for me to handle. We then got the Fried Ice Cream as dessert which was also very delicious. Overall, this was a great experience! If you’re looking for a popular Japanese spot in Indy, Sakura is definitely a winner! The pricing very reasonable and comparable to other places I've been to. They did have some unique meats that I have never seen before at a hot pot place so that was pretty cool.
