Ritchey Woods is a wonderful place to go for a walk. It's beautiful and never too crowded. There are various trails to have different experiences like small bridges or stream views. There's a small pioneer-era graveyard on one of the trails. There are some benches or tree stumps off some trails to take a rest if desired.
There are picnic tables behind the bathrooms so it's a good place for a get-together or to enjoy a meal outdoors.
If you arrive early or stay late, you're more likely to see deer grazing which is a nice treat.

We LOVE Ritchey Woods! Walking the entire park (all trails) with a determined pup takes about 30-45 minutes, but it's easy to spend hours diving into nature! Besides the amazing plant life, we have seen deer in this park (a baby that we have happily seen get bigger!). Make sure if you bring your pup that they are up to date on flea and tick meds and you wear proper gear to protect yourself! Bathrooms are usually kept in order as are the trash cans. There are multiple spots to sit and rest if necessary, a great covered area for picnics, and multiple spots for great pictures with your family or pups!

Peaceful and pristinely maintained park. You can probably do all the trails in 30 or 40 minutes. Every time I've gone at dusk there are bunnies galore. 🐰 there's a free lending library, bathroom, lots of parking, areas for eating, benches for resting and maybe places for camping. Everything was well marked. Felt safe and the beauty of the forest trails was restorative. I could've easily used a jogging stroller and felt that I could've taken a wheelchair on most of these trails (my child uses a wheelchair so ♿️ accessibility is important to our family).

Ritchey Woods is a lovely preserve that’s well maintained and modern. You can complete a lap around the trails in roughly 30-40min walking at a slow to moderate pace. The views are scenic and the paths are wide. There’s not too much elevation, and only a few sections of the path that you have to watch your footing due to roots but overall it’s rather accessible. Highly recommend for a quick nature walk. Dog friendly and plenty of parking.

We live less than a mile from Ritchey Woods and have frequented this wonderful preserve for many years. Our dogs have always loved going to "RW". It is beautiful in all seasons, especially the Fall. Over the years we have seen lots of deer as well as coyotes, foxes, raccoons, otters in Cheney Creek, beavers, several non-vemomous species of snakes, turtles, and an abundance of bird life including various raptors, pialated woodpeckers, Great Horned Owls, etc. RW has a nice series of well-maintained trails and bridges and even a small cemetery dating to the early 1800s. RW has the feel of southern lndiana woodlands such as Brown County, Lake Monroe, Yellowwood etc although obviously on a much smaller scale and is a perfect place to take children, leashed dogs and anyone seeking a respite of solitude and beauty in an area surrounded by development.

Very nice, walkable trails. Not too long. Walked the longest trail in about half an hour, sort of took my time. There's a little pioneer cemetery at the top of a hill, accessible by a trail and it's so surreal. But like, in a good way. Very nice and clean bathrooms and plenty of picnic tables, but only near the entrance of the trails. Plenty of gravel parking.

The saddle barn was amazing. However, we stayed after to hike around and found the map given to be less than useful due to the trails themselves are poorly marked. I also was not a fan you frequently could see another trail making the trails to feel a bit crowded together.
However, for being so convenient to Indianapolis, it is a nice State Park.

Great park! I can't believe I waited so long to visit. I went for my New Years Day hike. I was disappointed that there were employees at the gate in New Years it being a holiday and all. I was even more disappointed when she asked for the gate fee and it was 1$ more than the other Indiana State Parks!!! I honestly should say I was appalled. Overall I was impressed. There is a playground with an in grounds slide. The restrooms were very clean and all of the stalls had toilet paper. I walked the 4 mile trail. It was a bit challenging and I found the way the trail winds in and out of the hills interesting. I drove all the roads and found the old barracks and horse stalls. I also drove past picnic areas. The picnic areas had me think about the hot summers we get and how there aren't many trees around for shade. I'd like to go back and hike this park more but unfortunately I think the open hours will conflict with my schedule.

Absolutely beautiful park just east of the Indianapolis metro area. Very well maintained by Indiana DNR. Many trails, including at least one along side a beautiful clear water creek. Lots of picnic areas, horseback riding, and even a golf course. Great place for relaxing and getting away by yourself or with family. One of Indiana's nicer state parks. I highly recommend. $7 entry for Indiana registered vehicles. $11 for non-Indiana registered vehicles. Worth every penny.

Hiking at Eagle Creek is seriously such a blast! I love wandering along the trails and taking in all the crazy cool views. , the peaceful sound of running water make it super relaxing but also fun. We saw a raccoon who was getting in to the trash, and the birds in the sanctuary were quick active! LOVED the buzzard gal! I wish I could remember her name. She was so curious! <3 A lovely please to walk, jog, or take the kids!
I am sad to see that people arnt picking up after their dogs at the main entrance, it's quite rude. Hopefully those pet owners do better.

Come here frequently for paddle boarding and it's always an enjoyable time. They have a great area for loading in your boat and even a small dock to temporarily rope up. I appreciate that there are speed limit for boats and that there are safety boats in the resvior. It's also pretty decent for fishing, not the best but still fun.

It’s a wonderful place to get away from the city life. Great place to practice nature photography, along with portraits.
They have an indoor restroom on both sides of the park. They’re available during business hours. With porta potties located along the main road.
They supply kayaks to rent for a budget friendly cost. Along with having an accessible ramp to bring your own.
I find the location to be clean, compared to other parks. There’s a few trash cans accessible, yet hard to find.
Recommend going during the week, due to weekends being heavily populated.
The trails, I’ve never seen to busy.
Plan to stay a few hours & to get lost & find yourself.

LOVED this walk but rated it low because I wish there were more accessibility signs and trails. We have an infant so we were pushing the stroller along the blue trail which started out great but I wish there was a sign halfway to turn around because you can’t get back up to the parking lot on one side it’s rocky (we were able to carry the stroller/car seat separately up the hill but it’s not for the weak 🤪). Otherwise we enjoyed the walk & pelicans.

Wow, I happened upon this park at the recommendation of the front desk at the hotel I was staying at. Walked around 3 miles or so of the surrounding canal walkway and park area. The area is absolutely gorgeous and extremely well maintained. Being from Cleveland, it was fantastic to see how this park was set up and how the canal path ran through the heart of downtown. Loved being able to sight see while exploring. All the museums and art areas were easily accessible as a result of how the walkway was laid out.

Easy way to see the city as a tourist, just follow this paved road by foot or by bike. We did the entire trail (loop + bottleworks district) of 13km by foot, it was a good workout.
2 things to note:
1. You sometimes go around attractions and monuments so good idea to sometimes deviate from the trail otherwise you miss some monuments. For example we deviated to follow the canal at some point which was nicer.
2. Buy some drinks/water beforehand, very little amount of shops on the loop before you get to Bottleworks.
Otherwise great idea, more cities should do this!

Holy COW this museum was great! Firstly, it is organized chronologically, as opposed to most museums which are organized by genre/concept. This made it feel more akin to a journey through time in Indiana. The exhibits also included miniature images of the state with a pin placed to show where in Indiana each artifact was found! So cool! Certain exhibits, particularly fossils, also included sculpted casts by the information plaques, I'm assuming for blind visitors to "see" the exhibits with their hands. This was very neat as well! The facility was clean and the café (especially the customer service!!!) was great.

We go here often with our toddler and I've never had any issues with cleanliness or broken anything, which is a huge plus. There's a fenced in dog park at the front entrance, a new family center that I think even hosts kids' parties, walking trails, picnic benches, and a good sized playground. For a city park near a freeway. Is an amazing little nature gym. Gorgeous November day hiking along Eagle Creek, which is lined with magestic Sycamores and other old growth trees. The there is a steep set of stairs to access the trail, but once down the trail is an easy/moderate hike, and great for dogs or smaller kids. Trails are clearly marked and easy to follow. The park backs up to a very nice and safe neighborhood. There are spots to gain access down to the creek, there were some kids creek stomping during my visit. Will be back.

Starkey Park is a great choice if you want to hike by the river and have a slightly more rugged experience in the woods. The trails are marked well in some spots and on others like trail 2, it is easy to lose the trail and get lost. Beware of hiking after rainfall. Trail 2 was completely covered in water and you have no idea until you run into the sign that tells you to beware. It would be nice to know that before you hike all the way down the trail. This is a hidden gem. A quick serene, relaxing, and enjoyable hiking trails. The main trails are nicely maintained. The trails are easy enough for young kids yet even the most experiences hiker would enjoy. If you have young kids, bring along a towel and let them enjoy several beautiful sections of Eagle Creek as they play in the water and learn to walk on slick rocks where they may "Accidentally" fall into the water. You may need some bug spray depending on the time of day and year you hike/walk/run the trails.

With glimpses of the white river and a winding path this gem of a park is situated between 465, a housing addition and a sort of commercial district. Don’t forget to ride under 465 and hit the south loop for an extended trip. You might as well stop at Oliver Woods Preserve while you are there. Enjoy plenty of parking and an area suitable for a semi-sketchy kayak launch (this could be revamped a bit) or take out. This park is perfect for a lowkey Sunday stroll. Enjoy!

What’s not to love about the Indianapolis Zoo?
Having a membership for two years now, my family has fully experienced all the finest parts of the zoo over and over again.
The membership pays for itself after only two visits a year, and we’ve gone at least 10-12 times each year. From ZooBoo to Christmas at the Zoo are the iconic ones, but the times during the weekdays when there are no field trips or herds of children are the best for my part-time home wife.
My daughter has fed giraffes, pet kangaroos, had her face painted and ate Dippin’ Dots on her birthday, rode the train, watched dolphins splash her, gave high-fives at the plexiglass at the orangutangs, smelled flowers, asked why Flamingos are pink, and almost has a visual map in her head of the entire park.
Have I mentioned she just turned three years old?
My son is 9 months old, and he’s had a handful of times already at the zoo, and the amount of experiences the zoo has provided has sustained into our home with imagination zookeeping, making animal noises, reading out of picturebooks her favorite zoo animals, and instead of “Old MacDonald had a farm” it is now “Old MacDonald had a zoo!”.
As a former educator for 15 years, I have witnessed students who have had experiences outside of the home greatly enrich their education and their overall social capital. Having my daughter exposed to so much of the world in the middle of the heartland of Indiana, through the Indianapolis Zoo, I know that she will find her passions in helping conserve and create a better world for the next generations with the education she’s learning here. I am inspired to continue inviting her into these spaces, and I look forward to seeing the wanderlust my son will have for these escapades to the jungle and prairie and everywhere in the park.
If I could give 10 Google reviews with 5-stars, I would give so much emphasis on how essential it is to get a membership, show up and provide the story of the Indianapolis Zoo to embed into your children, and watch them become fuller with each visit.

What a great experience, went during the week, less crowded. It was our first time at the zoo. It was gorgeous. I loved all the places that you can and just sit and observe the animals. The park was so clean. I can't say enough great things about the staff, they were so kind and offered up all the events coming up at the zoo. We took the kids to the Indianapolis Zoo during a weekend trip, and it was a great time all around. The place is huge — you could easily spend half a day wandering around without realizing it. We saw all the big hitters: elephants, giraffes, kangaroos, and a bunch of others that I’m pretty sure my kids renamed halfway through (“Look, it’s a long-necked horse!”).
We splurged on feeding the giraffes and flamingos, and it was totally worth it — the kids were thrilled, and we got some great photos out of it. We also took them on the little rollercoaster, which they absolutely loved (and which gave us a much-needed break from walking).
The dolphin show was definitely the highlight — entertaining, well done, and a nice break from all the walking. The zoo was packed since the weather was perfect and they were handing out candy to kids dressed up for Halloween, so it had a fun, festive vibe (and a sugar-fueled chaos energy).
We grabbed some food from one of the stalls expecting the usual overpriced “theme park” meal, but honestly? It wasn’t bad at all. The fries, chicken tenders, and nachos actually hit the spot — maybe we were just starving, but still, solid effort.
All in all, 4 stars — great experience, awesome for families, and bonus points for not charging $20 for fries. Just be ready for crowds if you go on a nice day!

I've been to a handful of zoos in my life. The Indianapolis Zoo is my favorite that I've been to. The layout made for a wonderful experience as we moved from one exhibit to another. I also think the gardens and foliage planted along all the exhibits really added to it.
We went on a Wednesday in the middle of August. Crowds were light which made for an easy viewing of all exhibits. All the animals were active. Watched the cheetahs chase each other around. Then we were lucky to see them get feed raw meat by the zoo keepers. The dolphin show was fun. The tropical bird and butterfly enclosures were awesome to walk through.
I'd highly recommend making this zoo a destination if you visit Indianapolis.

I had an amazing time at the Indianapolis Zoo! We booked our tickets online, and it only cost $16 per person totally worth every penny. I didn't know what to expect and just really loved the museum. I can tell that they've made an admirable effort to include underrepresented artists. I also loved all of the pairings of different art pieces so that I could really think about the pieces and notice new things. This museum is also perfect for children! An inexpensive place to spend the day watching a ballgame. Food prices are fair and the food is pretty good. Souvenir prices are on par with everywhere else. Restrooms were clean and plentiful. Went to an Indianapolis Indians game for the first time and it was great!! Victory Field is beautiful and the game featured the Indians vs. the Iowa Cubs. It was a pitching duel through 10 innings and a 0-0 score then Iowa broke loose for 7 runs in extra innings. The game was well played by both teams. It's a good looking building, but I guess most shops are only open for a handful of hours around lunch - I think? Only a few places were open at 3:30pm on the Friday I looked around, anyway. The market has restrooms and an ATM; plus free wifi, or at least poster signs give user and password logins (didn't check if they were working myself.)
The data that Google Maps has for the restaurant vendors (and other orgs) listed here looks like a disorganized mess. Google Maps seems very unsure which vendors are actually closed rather than open; and for those open, Google usually seems confused by the hours. (So am I, and the Mall's webpage definitely doesn't resolve that.) Somebody who cares about the Market, and who knows it well, should spend a little time trying to fix most of this on Google Maps, imho, for the benefit of all involved.

Great place to go if you are a foodie. This place has a wide variety of food vendors. They have crepe shops, Greek, Italian, BBQ, bakeries, dessert places, etc. It has a really fun vibe and the upstairs is ideal for families with small children. I love this place. How long has it been here? How many times have I walked by? Why did I never look at their menu? I don’t have the answers to these questions. I sincerely apologize for not coming sooner. The food was fantastic and the staff were super friendly. Prices were reasonable. The location is perfect. We thoroughly enjoyed sitting on the patio enjoying our food by the canal. Unfortunately people who live in Indianapolis do not see the canal as a destination for food. That needs to change. I wish we had more restaurants along the canal so that people would see it as a dining destination. I think I may have stopped by sooner if they had a sign right by the canal with their menu on it. I didn’t even know what they sold. It doesn't look like much from the road but trust your gut when it calls you to turn in. The trails here are really fun and there's a lot of them. You can travel in and out of the canopy and the tall grasses with ease while avoiding the crowds you find in other parks. many perfect for bikes or foot traffic. There is a baseball field here that often has games in the summer but it's not near the trails so it maintains the serenity. The parking lot does tend to be tight parking and there's one pot-o-let there. It's been pretty safe. Have fun out there folks

Great for your lowkey hike. The area surrounding the park is nothing special and the actual park area which includes a playground, baseball fields and other parking areas is run down. There is also a big recycling dumpster on the property. OTHERWISE, the dirt/gravel trail system was great. The trails are poorly marked as in there is no actual map provided when you are there. So once we got a grasp of it from my Strava walking app, we walked the perimeter which was about a 3 mile walk. There are a lot of shoot offs and short cuts from each trail. Widened of trails vary. We enjoyed walking by the white river for a good portion of it. The parking lot was packed when we came at 12pm on a Sunday but there is additional parking, it’s just further away. The place also allows horses and bikes. There were a good amount of bikers, but the space was truly big enough that it didn’t seem busy at all. Do be aware of the bikers. You could walk all of the trails in a matter of a couple hours. Nice gem of a park in between Greenwood and downtown. Restrooms available.

I had driven by several times before I tried to give this place ago. I think it's a great secret for Indianapolis. I will occasionally cross bikers, runners, or other hikers but usually don't see too many people. There's a large paved path that goes up and around and ends at a neighborhood, and there are lots of dirt pads off the side that make for some nice trail hiking. My dog loves it and it's interesting at one point. Sort of being over 465 and you can hear all the traffic but you can't really see it. It's one of our favorite places to go close to home.

This is by far a beautiful nature park to just get away. Walking a dog around the lake, seeing the wild animals, nature in its glory - all wonderful. Every time I go I see something either new or that I missed on my previous visit. The other visitors and dogs have also always been very friendly. I do recommend that you bring some doggy poop bags as I always do, just in case they’re out like they were today. A word to the visitors - clean up after your dogs. Some people are disrespectful of the park and let their dogs do whatever without cleaning up but the park staff work hard to keep it the beautiful place that it is. Also, parents/guardians let the young ones be destructive. This is why it’s so hard to have beautiful things. Again - my hats off to the fantastic and ultra hard work that the park staff does to keep this place a beautiful attraction. I highly recommend this place - and give the Labrynth a walk through with the Indiana Grass. It’s definitely mind calming if you allow it to be. I can’t give this place enough stars.

We had a truly lovely Sunday afternoon at the Virginia Fairbanks Art & Nature Park. I was initially worried about parking, but it turned out to be surprisingly easy with plenty of spots available. Since we had our dogs with us, we stuck to the 1.4-mile loop trail around the lake. It was perfect for them! The path itself is a mix of crushed gravel and packed dirt, winding through both open meadows and peaceful wooded areas. Along the way, we really enjoyed the beautiful plantings and the interesting artwork accompanied by helpful information placards. Just a heads-up: the path narrows considerably where it runs between the lake and the river, so be aware of your surroundings, especially if it's busy or you have pets. Overall, it was a fantastic, fun walk and a wonderful way to spend the afternoon.

It is located right in the middle of downtown and has lots of buses that go every direction.

Had the whole place to myself today! It was wet and chilly, but I did see ducks out swimming. I forgot my binoculars, so make sure to bring yours. The interstate makes it loud of course, but the juxtaposition of the flow of cars next to this working wetland is interesting, and the habitat is used so I'm glad someone did this.
Could use some TLC with garbage pickup and such, I'm sure it's hard being by the interstate, and it's also winter so there's no hiding anything with foliage. I liked the seating and how some of the paths led down into the wetlands more. Very cute park though! This park won't be a quiet nature hike necessarily, but it offers its own unique experience, and the birds like it!

Spectacular disc golf course. Spaced out puts, trees, right by the river+. Challenging enough for the advanced player and relaxed enough for the beginner to figure it out. This park has scenic views, a kayak launch, plenty of parking and is clean. Not much for actually hiking but after it’s all said and done, I realize my boyfriend didn’t take me here to hike. Beautiful community-run park on the north side of Indianapolis. There's a little over a half mile of trails that are well maintained, with lots of wildflowers, birds, and bunnies. Park is extremely sketchy, lots of people just sitting in their cars without ever getting out to walk trails, some just doordashing or relaxing while others sitting around almost all day. Couple of nice lengthy trails along a creek. Weird meetups, possible gang activity said by local cop. Then you have people that like to bounce around the parking lot, parking in different spots seeming like their following you. Someone is still losing their clothes at random on the trails. Some homeless on drugs or alcohol, sadly mulitple spots of trash left behind as well as liqour bottles everywhere. Liqour store and Super 8 motel within walking distance is not good. Everyone drives by staring at you or driving by closely trying to see inside your vehicle! DONT LET YOUR KIDS OR PETS PLAY IN THIS CREEK! ITS FULL OF BAD STUFF! ALWAYS trash in the parking lot but there are 2 trashcans provided! Baby wipes everywhere, tampons on ground, condoms broken glass you name it...just gross everywhere you look.
They dont have city come clean the park grounds, just collecting the trash. Lights OFF at night, I wouldnt be here after its fully dark! I wouldnt attempt to sleep here overnight either as it is pitch black and the cops dont want people sleeping here anymore. Its a shame otherwise its a beautiful nature park.

This place is a dogs dream. My boys love being in the woods and they also like being near water. I had been taking them on some nature preserve trails but they of course have to be on a leash. First, I'll address my problem. There is no way to show up asks pay to go once. They have a neat security feature where you'd need a fob or something to gain entry. Unfortunately, we were just driving through and wanted to run the dogs for 15 minutes, perfectly happy to pay the$5 single day fee.
Fortunately, a nice person leaving the park let us in.
Now, for the park.
All grass. From afar, it looks lush. When you're in it, you realize that the grass is sparse. It needs some overseeding. Your dog will need to be cleaned up.
Regarding one comment about the mud at the front, they have laid down a nice amount of straw so that's not a problem.

I have to say that I had and still have mixed feelings about this trail. The hiking path, itself is very narrow. You must walk single file. That is not what gives me mixed feelings, however. The fact that you must share a very narrow path with mountain bikes is what is disappointing about this trail. If you have a dog; even worse. You will find yourself having to jump into the brush over and over again as bikes bear down on you. It would make sense for the parks department to make the trail one or the other and not both a hiking and biking trail. The only other negative would be the close proximity to the highway. You never get quite far enough away to feel like you are really in the woods.
If you like a semi rugged hike, this one is not bad. It covers a lot of terrain that is quite hilly at times. The trail is not marked very well and you will often face a dilemma when coming to a fork in the trail. Despite this, the trail did eventually loop back to the place you started. Many hikers that I ran into stopped me to ask if I knew how to get off the trail.
Lastly, the trail would be great for dogs if the constant bike traffic did not cause you to have to pull your dog into the brush.

This is a great hidden gem. Parking is very limited (atleast during tge off season, I imagine they unlock the gates when weather warms up to allow for more oarking space). It is part of eagle Creek park but there is no fee required for entry. The main loop overlooks the river. There is even a cool cinder block structure hidden in the woods. It appears to be a youngster hangout. This part of Eagle Creek is much less populated with visitors than the part east of the resevoir. I consider it a must hike for the hiking enthusiast.

There is a well built official trail that is extremely well marked that offers nice views overlooking the reservoir towards Starling Nature Sanctuary and even provides a path out to the reservoir at about the halfway point. Additionally, these trails provide access to countless additional unmarked trails winding all the way through the west side of the park to the Great Bear statue off of 56th street. The only negative is that it seems hit or miss whether the gate is open; there is a small parking lot outside the gate, but it makes the walk to the official trails almost as long as the hike itself.

I've hiked Eagle Creek for years and just recently found out about this place and was very pleasantly surprised how nice the views and hikes were. The trail are very well marked and not to difficult to hike. It's a good hike and you'll be amazed that it's not more popular. If the gates are closed to the entrance just park next to it and walk the road till you get to the trail. Adds less then a mile onto your overall walk.

Great place to hike in Indianapolis! There are a seemingly endless amount of interconnected trails between Wilson Road and 56th Street.
The south entrance and parking lot on 56th Street has a large, metal bear monument and is a popular place for fishermen. Unfortunately there is a lot trash everywhere throughout the woods, in the parking lot, and in the water left by people who have no respect for nature.
The north entrance at Scott Starling Nature Preserve on the other hand is more secluded and has way less litter. There is also less parking, but it is split between two trailheads.
