We booked the rooftop for some drinks and arrived ordering some beers and cocktails. Beers were no problem but the cocktails were still missing 20 minutes later. We follow up on the cocktails to be told they had run out of ingredients for those cocktails and in fact we had to select different ones. After doing this the member of staff returns to say there is no record of payment so could we prove that (we were not offered a receipt at any point in this process) Finally this gets cleared up and the cocktails arrive. In the meantime we ordered food and in a good amount of time 5/8 meals arrived. After 15 minutes the other 3 still hasn’t so we enquire about the whereabouts of these meals. Two arrive immediately having clearly been sat there waiting with no staff. The other arrives in another 10 minutes piping hot and clearly forgotten about until the moment they were reminded. Overall I believe the individuals do their best and they deliver fine drinks and average food for a large price however the communication is horrendous and there is clearly a fundamental problem within the staff that needs someone far more clever than whoever is currently in charge to fix. I would recommend for an expensive beer but nothing more.

The roasts…… There were six of us for lunch, two had chicken and four had pork. All the roasts came out lukewarm at best and the serving sizes were ok... although each a different size. We all agreed that for the size, temperature and flavour, the roasts were not worth the $32/$33 we paid. It was like the kitchen were just trying to pump them out to keep up with the amount of orders coming through. I’d go back to The Fitz to try their standard pub menu but not for the Sunday roast. I don’t actually think it should be on the top 16 list, let alone at #4.

We came on a Sunday for their Sunday Roast which was either Pork, Chicken or a vegetarian. The price is quite high and when we got it, it was lukewarm. Unfortunately the Spiced Crispy Cauliflower and Cucmber Raita was not as nice as we expected - it felt a little over fried and the battering took away from the meal. They offer three cuts of steak: a 300g rump, a 250g sirloin, and a 400g porterhouse. We ordered the 250g sirloin. No mash option offered, so we ordered some 'Paris mash' as a side, which was nothing like genuine Paris mash, if we're being honest. The steak was good, although nowhere near their claimed 250g. The mash was not as creamy as Paris mash should be and the chicken gravy ruined it. Good mash doesn't need gravy, it just needs the meat accompaniment. Easy. Whilst the food was good, not great, but good, the front bar itself is an absolute gem. It's cosy, has a ton of tap beer options, and has a nice deep bar top - perfecting for sitting at and leaning on. And they had AFL on the TV. Result! The Welcome is a good pub!

The hand-pulled ales are delicious, and true to form proper cask ales, meaning fermentation of sugars breaking down which causes the “fizz” and foam, as opposed to artificial carbonation. I've work in Hospo and managed restaurant and also dine in many Pub. it's not that hard you just "don't care" Then the food arrived… and it was disappointing and sad just to look at to say the least. (Pics) But give it the benefit of the doubt and tried it. Calamari was like rubber bands, polenta chips were fried to death, and the $32 double patty burger was so overcooked it was dry and tough — usually a sign of poor-quality meat or bad cooking. We spoke to the manager, who was understanding. Not their fault, but someone in the kitchen either needs training or retirement. We spent $140 on food and left most of the food that the manager removed after we spok. At that point, even just a round of drinks or a bottle of wine (who is about $20 cost price) as a goodwill gesture would’ve made a difference. I rarely leave bad reviews, but for a Paddington pub, this was seriously underwhelming.

Asides from the truffle the meat dish tasted good, its why this gets a 2 star on food and not 1 star. For $180 you're honestly better off flushing $168 down the toilet, going to mcdonalds and getting a big mac for the remaining $12. Quicker service, better taste, and you aren't held hostage for 3 hours. Avoid this place at all costs unless you want a beer. I take good photos. Don't let them fool you into thinking those abominations tasted good. Meat one was ok though, apparently the chef was from a good restaraunt who cooked it, so no wonder.

The space was just right for our group, with a warm, welcoming atmosphere that made it feel both special and relaxed. The food was fantastic (everyone commented on it!), the staff were attentive and friendly, and the whole night ran so smoothly. Most importantly, everyone had a brilliant time — and the birthday boy was completely surprised and over the moon. Highly recommend The Village Inn for any celebration. The Mercantile Hotel was not short or any of it. The very busy pub is situated in prime location with beautiful views of the bridge definitely did not disappoint. We had purchased the fan favourite - Shamrock Pie and the Irish Chicken Curry. The dinner did not give ‘pub’ but gave a properly cooked meal through the delicious tastes and presentation of the meals. All food was freshly cooked and was great with flavour. All this food, went down great with some nice Irish beers and ciders. To mention, the staff were all incredibly helpful and were willing to help us out with our orders despite being their peak dinner/drinks time. We were thoroughly impressed, especially given that dinners can get quite pricey in Sydney’s CBD. When we do return, we will definitely be visiting The Mercantile Hotel again. Our meals were a decent size and the chicken parmy was tender, tasty and gone too fast.😉 We started off with the garlic bread and yeah it tasted great, but I thought it was cut a bit too thin and there was too much ‘crust’ and not enough actual bread. Like I said, the taste was there, I just would have gone for another type of bread. The nachos one of my friends had was huge, after adding a serve of beef brisket for something different. I was definitely having food envy and secretly hoping she didn’t finish it all! My partner had British fish and chips served with mushy peas and a side of vinegar. He said it was delicious and the fish looked flaky and fresh. There was a meat raffle when we were there (Thursday night), tickets handed out with each purchase. For some reason, maybe where we were sitting, each time someone left the pub they gave us their tickets! We had so many we were bound to win…..and that we did! Two meat trays were heading their way to our homes! That’s dinner sorted for a few days. 😊 The Barley really is a local. Staff are welcoming, friendly and it has a really good atmosphere.

The fish and chips are the best I’ve had anywhere in Australia. The staff are friendly, and the beer garden is well-heated in winter. The previous issue with kids running around and disrupting the outdoor areas seems to have improved. If I could suggest a couple of improvements, it would be to add another bar, as the front bar currently services both the front and back areas, which can be a little slow.
