Museums
The Bonnefanten Museum, situated in Maastricht, Netherlands, is a striking art museum known for its diverse collection that spans centuries of artistic expression. The museum is located in the modern Ceramique district and features a unique structure designed by architect Aldo Rossi. It houses an impressive array of art including local artisan pieces, medieval sculptures, and paintings by Old Master artists. The museum offers dynamic exhibitions and cultural programs that provide visitors with an engaging journey through art history.
Interesting architecture and good curation of old and modern art. The location at the river is also nice.

The tickets cost 17,5 euro. Museum work only untill 5 pm. Lazy people. On 25 euro you can see Venezia Art Biennial for two days with a lot of art exhibitions. But the exhibition “7 sins” very good. Nice installed. How you made such exhibition? It is about people in Holand… and Brusell, about your ‘freedoms’ and all your sins… And exhibition of Medieval art very good. Thank you!

VISIT A GREAT DUTCH ART MUSEUM AND GET A IMPRESSION OF THE NEWLY PLANTED FRONT GARDEN | YOU FIND EVERYTHING IN IT - BEER BOXES TO CAR TIRES | WELL - PROBABLY THE GARDENER WAS DRUNK OR THE DIRECTOR HIGH ! AT LEAST ARCHITECT ALDO ROSSI IS NOT ANYMORE AROUND TO ENJOY THIS DESIGN 🤣

Good organized but we didn’t like. Mostly Jezus and modern art
Aksinia — Google review
Very big museum, don’t have enough time to finish all parts. My suggestion for visitors: leave enough time to explore the exhibition and also for the interaction parts (paper-made hat etc..). The museum shop is very nice! Bring some souvenirs to decorate your home! * museumkaart excerpted, no need for reservation.
Yi L — Google review
Please note that, despite what Google may indicate, entry is not free. The museum is worth a visit, featuring old masters and a rich collection of religious art. The temporary exhibitions were also quite engaging. Lockers are free and require no deposit. Parking is convenient and reasonably priced in the nearby residential area.
Marcillo F — Google review
Modern art museum but not only modern art.
Eugene S — Google review
Great museum with a plethora of art showcased, a gift shop, and a nice restaurant. It is worth noticing that its focus is on contemporary art. I truly enjoyed the few hours I spent there, as well as their food. We visited in the afternoon of a weekday during summer vacation and it wasn't cramped at all.

Located in one of the oldest secular buildings in Maastricht, the Museum aan het Vrijthof showcases a diverse range of Dutch art and historical collections. Established in 1973, it features rotating exhibits by contemporary artists and houses the impressive Wagner-De Wit collection, which includes works by Dutch and Flemish artists from the 17th century. The museum's setting on a charming square surrounded by characteristic Dutch architecture adds to its allure.

A beautiful Museum with interesting architecture. The staff ist very friendly and the Jimmy Nelson exhibition was absolutely amazing.

We came here without expectations yet the modern exhibit of Ted Noten was quite interesting and fascinating! I'm impressed with his incorporation of 3D printing into his models. It just shows that gives so much more flexibility and creativity for his expression. The place has a good cafe at the reception. There's also a locker area where you can store your stuff temporarily as you go around the museum. At the end of our visit, I helped some of the museum staff on some technical issue with the 3D printer in the lobby. The museum ladies were very nice and courteous. We really enjoyed this visit!

Museums
The Natural History Museum of Maastricht, situated in the Netherlands, is a small yet captivating destination that boasts extensive collections of fossils, plants, insects, and minerals from the Limburg region. The museum's exhibits offer a journey through time, showcasing the area's rich biodiversity and geological heritage. Visitors can marvel at ancient fossils of prehistoric creatures like the Mosasaurus and explore diverse ecosystems through interactive displays.
Very cute museum and very impressive exhibition of the mosasaurus. Also got a spontaneous exciting tour by the lovely Jacques, who gave us an awesome insight into the museums history as well as the mosasaurus, especially in and around Maastricht. And i think the sticker we bought in the shop speaks for itself :)
Felix — Google review
A good museum, good explanation, but there is often not enough explanation in the Dutch labels (if there are any labels at all), and no English explanation. The shop is small but nice and the garden nice enough, but otherwise quite a small establishment with an okay collection. I felt the museum deteriorated a bit as it went along, from good explanation and artefacts (mostly fossils) at the beginning, to just a lot of slightly creepy taxidermy at the end. I feel that needs renovating a bit towards the end to be a bit more 21st Century!
Chris L — Google review
The best museum I did in Maastricht during my stay. There are so many things to see and it is really impressive to see traces on the past wildlife here. I loved it. Moreover, the staff crew was very nice.
Julie H — Google review
Beautiful museum, definitely worth a visit. Some parts of the museum are a bit outdated, but from what I've seen is that they're working on renewing it.
Sven L — Google review
No labels in English. Not for kids since not ineractive. Very old fashioned approach to museum. Lots of things without any logic or explanation like the rooms with stuffed animals. On positive side, the intro movie is good and room with mosasaur skeleton replica and accompanying video is nicely made.
Roko Z — Google review
If you like ornithology and wanna see the evolution of the animals and their habitat in south of the Netherlands, it is a great place to go to
Fabio V — Google review
Absolutely fantastic with a wide range of subjects that you can spend a good few hours looking round and still need to go back. Also well worth seeing the 3D display as it is awesome. Plenty for adults and children to learn about. The layout is Disability friendly which is great for those who are unsteady on their feet or in a wheelchair
Mark C — Google review
I first visited here bought the ticket on 8/11/2025. For me it's worth giving it a visit. Because everything was wonderful, especially service and staff. The kind smile and the helpfulness of the staff still linger in my memory.

The Helpoort is a well-preserved 13th-century gate that was part of the medieval city walls in Maastricht. It is also known as Jekerpoort, Hoogbruggepoort, Alde Poort op den Ancker, Kruittorenpoort or De Twee Torens.
It is a nice historical port from really old times. Going inside was just an amazing experience, not for port itself, but because of the people that explains you the full history of the place! I learned a lot about Maastricht and history of The Netherlands! I was really impressed by that!
Rodrigo M — Google review
Helpoort – A Timeless Guardian of Maastricht Nestled in the charming Jekerkwartier district, Helpoort is not just a gate — it’s a living fragment of Maastricht’s medieval soul. Built in 1229, it is the oldest surviving city gate in the Netherlands, and the only remaining part of Maastricht’s first city wall. Originally called Hoogbruggepoort, it played a key role in the city’s defense until the 15th century. After losing its military function, the gate was repurposed over the centuries — from a meeting place for cloth workers to a gunpowder store, prison, and even a private residence. Its rich and varied history is a testament to its resilience. Architecturally, Helpoort is striking: two semi-circular towers in stone connected by a central archway. It has been restored several times, most notably in 1881, preserving its medieval character while making it accessible to the public. Today, Helpoort houses the Vestingmuseum Maastricht, a museum dedicated to the city’s fortification history. Visitors can learn about Maastricht’s military past, walk through the old walls, and immerse themselves in the strategic heart of a once-fortified city. While small in size, Helpoort is monumental in significance. A visit here feels like stepping through time — a must-see for history lovers and curious wanderers alike.

Very pleasant and old part of the city. With beautiful houses on the sides, very pretty walk.

Amazing historical place with explanation as well. There is a huge park for rest in front, also leading to the center on the other aide, across the bridge.
Amina M — Google review
We had a great experience in this museum. The guide, Ron, was very knowledgeable about the history of Maastricht and the Helpoort. Made the experience worth the trip considering the relatively small museum. Highly recommend!

What a great place to visit. FABULOUS photo ops!! If you walk through the gates, just off to the right is a little doorway-takes you up into the tower and a small museum. The 2 gentleman there are quite informative!! Great find!!!!

Old town gate, walls and enforcement. Great spot for a walk and some phtos.

A small museum located on the second level. The entrance is on the right behind the gate house. Entrance fees applies €3 each. The museum is small with limited artefacts on display. But nonetheless interesting. The steps up the museum is narrow and do be cautious when ascending the steps.

The Museum of Illusions Maastricht is an interactive museum that offers a mind-bending experience for visitors of all ages. Located in Mosae Forum Maastricht, this unique attraction showcases optical illusions, holograms, and interactive exhibits that challenge your perception and captivate your senses. From defying gravity to exploring the world of optical illusions, the museum provides an exciting opportunity to delve into the wonders of science and visual trickery.
The Illusion Museum was one of the highlights of visiting the beautiful city of Maastricht. There’s a wide variety of puzzles, mind games and visual effects. The turning tunnel was definitely our favourite. The whole staff were super friendly and helpful especially the blonde lady (didn’t catch her name unfortunately), George and Ryan. We would definitely love to come back!! :) HUGE TIPP: book your tickets ONLINE beforehand to guarantee your place. If it’s full you won’t be able to enter the museum. Have fun guys!
O. I — Google review
This was an interesting experience. Some of the Illusions don't work if you're by yourself, but the staff are really friendly and will help with those. I think the ticket price is high for what you get. Book the tickets online to get a discount.
Victoria N — Google review
Friendly staff, but way too expensive for what you get. They show the typical illusions, not very innovative or creative and very small for a museum. For kids more fun maybe but still too pricy.
Nicky S — Google review
Interesting place. Conveniently located in the downtown right above the underground parking. Could be quite crowded at some point, but take the staff advice and come a bit later if necessary. There is plenty to see whitin walking distance. The place itself is not big. Probably less than 1 hour if you are not very curious. Could be extended a bit more. 5 stars for the staff, 3 stars for the facility. Average 4.
Patrickzxm — Google review
The worst museum I have ever visited. It is more like a small room than a museum. There is nothing much to see. They have printed some of Escher's work and pasted them on the wall. Complete waste of Euro 30 for me and my son. I highly recommend that NOBODY visits this crap. If there was a 0 star option, I would give that.
Arindam P — Google review
I took my 14-year-old son to Museum of Illusions which is in the very centre of Maastricht. As well as the optical Illusions there are a number of classic puzzles that visitors can try and solve. If you attempt these then you will have a good visit. If you just pass over these items your visit would probably be quite short. The staff are very attentive and helpful; they will guide you as to how best use / stage the optical illusions and guide you with the puzzles. There are a number of optical illusions that you can photograph and the staff are on hand to help you with staging the photographs to get the best results.
Peter N — Google review
Very cool experience and a fun activity to do, especially with a friend or the family. Saw some very cool illusions that blew my mind, and the staff were extremely friendly and awesome. The entry fee is also very reasonable. Definitely recommend going here if you are ever in Maastricht. 👍🏻
Rouche F — Google review
The Museum of Illusions in Maastricht is a fun and quirky spot to check out, especially if you’re looking for something different to do in the city. The interactive exhibits are entertaining and great for a quick mental workout or some Instagram-worthy photos. It’s an engaging way to spend 45 minutes to an hour, especially for families or groups of friends. That said, the ticket prices are on the higher side for the amount of time you’ll likely spend there. I’d definitely recommend checking for online deals or discounts beforehand to make it more budget-friendly. Booking ahead can also save time, especially on busy days. Overall, it’s worth visiting if you have some free time in Maastricht and want a lighthearted, unique experience. Just make sure to grab a deal to get the most bang for your buck!

The historic Marres House for Contemporary Culture features striking large-scale paintings and Surrealist murals by Peruvian-born artist Arturo Kameya, transforming the space into an otherworldly environment. Unique secluded place with big garden. Great to sit inside in winter. Even better to sit outside in summer. Super coffee and perfect dishes from Damascus and Italy.
Karan H — Google review
Our friend had reserved her birthday party in marres for over 6 months. The staff asked what dish from the main menu all the guests would want in advance. All the guests chose their dishes in advance and the order was passed on to the staff. Suddenly, one week before the birthday, (note that the restaurant was reserved 6 months before and guests booked tickets from other countries to attend) the staff claimed that individual orders even ordered earlier are „too complicated“ and that all the guests should swap to a menu that is at least 50 euros. The beautifully planned evening turned into a spontaneously cancelled nightmare and none of us understand why. The answer is probably profit. As a group of guests, we feel unwelcomed and disrespected.
Sam T — Google review
We always liked to go to Marres for having a nice dinner in Maastricht but since they were trying to push us into a very expensive menu and became highly unprofessional in contact, it is hard to recommend. We booked a birthday dinner months in advance, clearly stating our preferences, everything was set. A week before the event, when finalizing details, the staff became unprofessional and inflexible, prioritizing profit over accommodating our needs. This forced us to cancel the reservation. Apparently we were not the only group cancelling our reservation because of a similar situation.
Leah V — Google review
Outstanding in all aspects! Our server was incredibly professional, cheerful and helpful. She suggested some delicious entrees and a wonderful dessert. The food was fresh, flavorful and presented beautifully. So happy to have found this gem of a restaurant! I highly recommend Marres when in Maastricht.

Explore the intriguing North Caves Maastricht Underground, a historical network of tunnels and caves that offer a glimpse into the city's past. These subterranean passageways were used for various purposes over the centuries, from mining to wartime shelter. The Sint Pietersberg is home to some of the most impressive caves in the Netherlands, including North Caves and Zonneberg Caves.
Lovely tour with interesting history. Our tour guide (George) was interesting, funny and made the tour well worth the time. It’s an easy bus ride and short walk from the city center. Great way to spend an afternoon.
Laura L — Google review
Let's talk "accessibility" as I feel like some attractions are a little liberal with the use of the term. These caves are technically accessible in that they are barrier free, however, there are quite a few steep hills that would be very difficult to navigate for someone without help in a manual or electric wheelchair. Signage to buy tickets is slightly confusing - I suggest taking the less steep hill up to the fort, as I took the steeper hill based on the signage and was met with stairs at the top. There is a fairly steep hill going into the caves that you'll have to navigate going in and coming back out. This would be very difficult for someone in a manual wheelchair to navigate without assistance. Inside the caves is hard packed dirt, which is more or less easy to get around aside from some fairly steep hills where my husband did have to push me from behind. For reference, I use a mobility scooter that is very hi-tech and usually does not have issues navigating steep inclines. I did struggle with some of these hills, as I found my wheels slipping on the dirt. I would not recommend attempting to come here alone, as someone will inevitably have to push you uphill at some point, and it will be difficult for them to do so. I found leaving the caves to go back outside the most difficult as quite a few people were standing on the very steep hill, and I needed to wait for them all to leave before navigating the hill. If I had to stop on the hill partway, there is no way I would be able to get moving again and would have to go back down to the bottom and try again. Again, my husband had to push me from behind, even though I was on a powerful mobility scooter. If you have help and if you have a powerful electric wheelchair or scooter, I do recommend the caves as long as you are prepared to navigate these steep hills.
Grace K — Google review
What an amazing place! You need be quite mobile as it's uneven and dark unless you're near a lantern carrier but definitely well worth a visit. The guide was informative with plenty of anecdotes too.
Cherry B — Google review
Great tour and very informative. However, 1hr tour in the cave could become slightly cold, therefore a jacket is needed. We visited on Saturday at 15:15. Inside the cave can get a bit crowded.
Ann H — Google review
This was a fun tour. It went a bit longer than planned, but it was enjoyable. The tour guide was entertaining. There’s quite a bit to see and lots to learn about the history these caves. Be sure to bring a light jacket and a little bottle of water.
Rose T — Google review
Awesome experience! Our guide, Paul was really good with our group explaining everything about the area and how it's not technically a "cave" as caves are natural and not man-made ,where this user to be a limestone mine/quarry in the past. A must-visit when you're in Maastricht.
Raina — Google review
We had the chance to visit the underground during a day trip between Christmas and new years. The tour in English is nice but has limited options along the day (check the website in advance to avoid waiting for too long the the next one). They do not allow dogs inside.
Paula Y — Google review
Insanely interesting place to get a tour, our guide (forgot her name😢) was very informative and had her way in making the small children feel comfortable during the tour, one small girl was a bit scared but we collectively made it very fun for her, initiated by the guide. There’s really cool history behind these centuries old manmade caves filled with art. Try and spot the oldest year carved into the wall!

Maastricht Museum offers a glimpse into the history of Maastricht, featuring intriguing exhibits such as an unknown Roman object and insights into the Sun King. While some may find it small, it's praised for its beautiful displays and is recommended for those interested in delving into Maastricht's past. Additionally, visitors can enjoy a delightful coffee experience before or after exploring the museum.
Lovely personnel and exhibition. The medieval part- 16th century, alongside the maps of the city, are the show stopper.

Despite its small size, the museum has a rich collection of objects dating back to the WWII and a very nice exhibition of photos showing how the city looked like in the past and how it changed after the bombing of 1940

A wonderfully presented and fascinating museum with displays covering prehistory to the modern day. The audio guide (which included English in contrast to some previous review comments) is easy to use and informative. The reconstruction models of the Roman and 18th Century city are particularly impressive. The staff were so friendly and welcoming.

Fort Eben-Emael, located in Belgium, was constructed between 1932 and 1935 as a defense against potential German attacks. Despite being considered impregnable, it was captured by German paratroopers in 1940. The fort played a significant role in World War II and now offers guided tours for visitors to explore its history and underground tunnels. The site also features a history museum that recounts the attack and surrender of the fort through documents, movies, and staged scenes.
Amazing bunker in pretty good condition and prepared exhibitions. The building itself is huge but unfortunately not all parts are open for visitors. You can learn more about its history and defence during World War II thanks to a film that's played on one of the exhibitions. Staff is friendly and prepared to answer your questions.

A monumental piece of war structure. We had a good lunch in the Mill restaurant that is on site. Hearty local food with friendly service. Overall, we felt a bit oppressed by the atmosphere and surroundings. It was also a sunny afternoon after a wet morning and neither of us wanted to spend much time underground. Signage was mainly in French and German and was quite old. Given that the fort is a major wartime structure, we thought a lot more could have been done to attract and engage visitors. Large free car park but nowhere to secure bikes or motorcycles.
Martin B — Google review
We did the guided tour (in English) and really enjoyed the experience. Our tour guide (Thomas) was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He explained everything well and answered all additional questions. There are some additional rooms that are not in the guided tour, but you can explore these in your own time afterwards. You can also do an unguided tour but during the guided tour you see some additional areas. Ons top of the fort is also a walking route you can do (approx. 3km). You can buy a map of the walking area with some information about things you see for €2.

Great place to visit in Belgium, very well conserved. You need one full day to visit it entirely if you take the guided visit which I highly recommend! Warning, this site in not fully accessible to person with limited physical abilities, lots of steep stairs and a lot of walk.

Iconic World War 2 Belgian Fort that was the site of several innovative but unfortunate military actions by the Nazis in 1940 in conquering it. Also a hiking trail that provides both historical installations and incredible views of the Meuse River valley.

Thank you Gustavo for the amazing tour of the fort. Your love for history made every story come alive. We learned so much and truly enjoyed every moment!

We had a special tour with a small group with a dedicated guide. It went through unlit corridors all the way though the mountain towards the Albert Canal. This place is just mindblowing and the tour guide was great!
Rt159ts — Google review
After breakfast we collected the car and drove to Eben Emael, a Belgian fort built in the 1930s that was captured in a spectacular assault by German glider troops in 1940. We had a 2 hour tour of the fort (cost 68 Euros for the 4 of us), led by Sven, that was very interesting. The fort was designed in the most modern way but everything seemed to be based on keeping the enemy at a distance. German innovations in demolitions meant the hollow charge weapons could penetrate the turrets of the fort and within about 30 minutes of landing, most of the observation points and weapons were disabled. The guide explained about the Belgian troops that lost their lives in each position of the fort, mostly conscripts and some as young as 19. The scale of the fort was vast, far larger than I expected and there were 5km of tunnels with electric lights, gas doors on the corridors, ventilators, and everything needed for the 1200 strong garrison to function. The Germans managed to capture it with 72 men as once the guns were disabled the fort served no purpose and the Germans were already able to cross the Albert Canal and Meuse bridges that the fort was built to defend. There were options to do other specific tours to the revolving cupola and the plateau where the gliders landed so I think we'll do that on another visit.

I do believe this is a best place in the city. 3 floors of books, places to work, places to chat, coffee point and extremely welcoming stuff. I lived in 20 mins from this places and nearly every week found myself willing to visit this place. The tour culminates in a visit to the taproom where guests can sample beers based on historical recipes from their own microbrewery.

Visited during Museumnacht, I absolutely didn't expect this! What a lovely place they've made! Museumkelder Derlon, situated in the basement of the Derlon Hotel in Maastricht, offers a captivating glimpse into Roman history. The museum showcases ancient ruins and artifacts dating back to the 2nd to 4th centuries, discovered during renovations in the early 1980s. Visitors can explore sections of an old Roman fort and a sanctuary featuring parts of a temple.
A nice little museum in the basement of the Derlon hotel. For 5 euros you can enter and this includes a drink in the café. The ruins are quite interesting as it shows the old history of the city. It's definitely worth the visit.
Julien W — Google review
Was charged 5 euros to see the museum, but it included a drink. The 'tickets' seemed very ad hoc as I just paid and then was told to go down. Afteerwards waited for 20 minutes for the drink, but since it wasn't in the system they just forgot me. Honestly I'd stop with this stupid system and just say it's for customers only, that way people can buy a drink the proper way and no lt jump through these hoops. The basement itself is totally cool btw, so can recommend that.
Alex P — Google review
Don’t be fooled by placed claim this is free. They charge and make you pay for a mandatory drink. Goes against their agreement with the city. Complete scammers stay away from Derlon.

An excellent place to stay if you love history. Unbelievable that some parts of the hotel belong to Roman empire. The rooms have all facilities and the staff is amazingly wonderful. Location is absolutely great as uts in heart of city with everything around. I recommend no other place to stay in Maastricht, except Derlon.

Great location, good food/drinks and friendly staff. Unfortunately the rooms are in need of an update. This is not the cheapest hotel in Maastricht but the rooms don’t reflect this, the rooms ate clean but very outdated. We have stayed several times but are not sure about the next time. Hopefully by then the rooms have renovated.

Aleksandra S — Google review
Disappointing stay at this hotel. The rooms and especially the bathrooms need desperate updating. The towels were completely worn and had holes in them, only 3(!) tissues in the tissue box, the cleaning staff entering the room without knocking, dusty mirrors, worn carpet and a shower curtain… Hardly things you would expect in a 5star hotel. There are better hotels in the city which are in the same price range but offer a better worth for your money.
Hi W — Google review
Great location and friendly staff, entry/restaurant is nice but dont be fooled by this. The rooms are ancient and the bathrooms date back to the stone age, plain terrible. Hotel is not worthy of 5 stars! Breakfast had diverse choices and was good enough. Save you money and look elsewhere until they redo the rooms and bathrooms in a 21st century style.

I love this hotel. It’s in a great location for walking around, shopping, or enjoying a relaxing meal or drink. The area is not secluded but not crowed either and the hotel faces a nice square with plenty of covered seating and food choices. The staff has been exceptional every time I’ve visited. They offer breakfast with eggs to order with both American and European food choices. And, the hotel sits on some exposed Roman ruins you can view while having breakfast downstairs. It’s one of my favorites places.
Mike F — Google review
Great location but for the premium price you'd expect rooms a little bigger or with a somewhat nice view. The room was very clean and the beds comfortable. All basics necessities as one may expect were provided. From our room we looked at the wall of a neighbouring building, the room was smaller than I expected and the windows and window blinds weren't in great condition. The service overall was good, receptionist was very friendly and helpful the older staff member at breakfast area was too, but the young english speaking girl server at the breakfast was not very helpful or polite just telling me what we have is what you see but after I insisted she go check with her colleague she did reluctantly and I was helped with my request. Maybe its just inexperience but in a reputable hotel like this I expect employees to be cheerful and ready to assist with requests

The Treasury St. Servaas, located in the St. Servatius Basilica, is a remarkable display of relics and artifacts associated with the saint and the church's history. The collection includes ecclesiastical items dating back to the 9th century, such as the Servatius shrine and numerous relics. Visitors can explore beautifully crafted works in several rooms across two levels, all housed within this well-preserved basilica.
Paid entrance fee €5 gives you access to the treasury museum, chapel & garden. Doors that are locked are out of bounds to visitors.
