The park is absolutely beautiful and full of space to explore. The playground area is fun, colorful, and perfect for younger kids my daughter had the best time. Unfortunately it’s in the middle of a scary part of town. The campground is nice with water and electric sites and an awesome locked bathhouse with an attached locked laundry. Both need a code to unlock. Best shower I’ve had since I left Texas eight months ago. The local law enforcement and rangers patrol often at the campground so it feels safe despite the surrounding area. There was one campground host in an old rv covered by a blue tarp. It was not hooked to any water so I assumed the plumbing didn’t work. I saw the host washing dishes at a hose on the site next door. I was sad to see this and had a hard time believing that the park administration allowed such an eyesore to stay at the campground. The host could not help us when we arrived at our site that was occupied by other campers. We had had our reservations for over a month. I’m not sure what the host does except live there. There are nice hiking trails here, though they could use some maintenance. There are rail trails nearby. Just be careful where you go. Don’t stop in areas with bars on the windows. Lots of shopping nearby. Again… don’t stop in neighborhoods with barred windows. Bass Pro Pyramid is awesome.

If you take all of the detours possible, it's considerably longer than 7 miles. My GPS had it pegged at 12 1/2 miles. (Yes, all the additional trails, mind you.) There were a plethora of downed trees along the off-the-beaten path trails and a couple of places where the blazing was confusing (namely around the 2 mile red blazing marker along the drainage valley.) There was also 2 downed trees blocking the trail and only one might be a spot of bother for those trail-riding. (it's close to 3ft tall without a ramp and on a down-hill so if you're not paying attention there might be a crash and ruining a front rim along with some pride.) The trail was in good shape for the most part and it wasn't so muddy that you couldn't traverse without getting knee deep in the mud. Even if it's been a few days, be prepared to get a touch muddy. For the entire hike, I saw 4 people and two dogs for six hours of hiking. One gentleman had his two dogs out walking (who lived right off the lake) and another who was getting miles in for a section hike of the PCT in the Sierras in July. The last was a couple on a leisurely stroll. There was plenty of wildlife sign out (deer, raccoons, turkeys) and I saw one tall Tom close to the trail that bumps up against Fisherville Road. I didn't encounter any wasps, hornets, ground wasps, snakes, ticks, or spiders on my walk but I figure in a month they will be out. I'm not looking forward to that. The lake trails are the gem of the area, in terms of getting away from it all and having a lovely walk in the woods. If you're going to get miles in without the possibility of being run over by trail riders or runners, it's the place to go.

The bike trail was very pleasant. However, (a big however) as can be seen from the posted photo, the park does not have any visible hours of operation posted for gate closing. The closing hours have been scratched off of the sign. On the day of our visit we returned from our bike riding with the family to be met with the gates being locked by the "custodian". Rules are rules and it is acceptable that I was late, but when this custodian observed us feet from the gate and smuggly gets into his van and drives away, you can only be left with a bad experience. This wasn't the best of it, the dude returns 10 minutes later, checks the lock and quickly jumps back into his van where his female companion photographs and laughs at us sitting on the other side of the gate. We sat there baffled at this person's behavior. He reversed from the entrance to never return leaving us to call the Memphis Police to let us out. Yes, we were late for a time we were unaware of but the subsequent behavior is very uncalled for and left my family unnecessarily worried for the situation. I sure hope this employee enjoyed his bit of fun and has a blessed life. Do better. Other than this, the area is very wonderful and is a worthwhile place to visit.

The staff were incredibly nice and efficient. The food is what you’d expect from buffet food, but they are very efficient moving folks through the food line. We did the night one and the lighted bridges we circled between were really pretty. But you are just circling around in the river for a couple of hours. Folks haven’t always loved the band in the reviews, but we thought they were great. We did sit up top, however because the dining room/enclosed area where they play does get really loud. There’s a shuttle that will take you from parking at the nearby visitor’s center to the drop off point by the boat. We went with my parents—my dad has some mobility issues and walks with a cane—and used the shuttle. The driver was so nice and made sure everyone got out of the van safely. It’s an extremely steep hill that takes you from street level to the dock/pier, so definitely consider the shuttle. (This is not a paid review for the van, I promise.)
