Waterfall Glen is a massive and beautiful Forest Preserve. If you go around the entire loop + the Rocky Glen trail to see the waterfall, it's about 10.5 miles total.
The trail was crushed limestone throughout and in great condition. I went on a gorgeous Sunday morning in April as soon as the Preserve opened, and it was already busy! There were a ton of bikers and runners/joggers, but the trail is wide enough to accommodate the number of people on it.
The waterfall was beautiful, as well as the scenic overlook. If you park in the main parking lot and follow the main trail, it's about 6 miles from the trailhead. There's also a parking lot much closer to the waterfall.
If you go around the full loop, there's a few road crossings and some walking along the road for short stints. Cass Road was the busiest road to cross and longest crossing.
Overall, this is a must visit forest preserve, whether you want an extended hike/run/bike ride, just to see the waterfall, or both!

I came here to try to see the waterfalls. After walking for a while and getting further and further away from my car in the parking lot…. I had to ask someone walking along the trails. And they said they’d been walking for 3 miles only to find out it’s it’s 9 miles away from the entrance. So I didn’t make it to the waterfall. But I still overall enjoyed being in nature. This is a regular nature walk my girlfriend and I take for an exposure to nature while not being a difficult hike to reach a beautiful waterfall ❤️ A great place to take the kids, let your dog play in the water, and we even saw people taking wedding/pregnancy pictures! Waterfall Glen is a great spot near Chicago to unwind and spend quality time with friends. The hike to the waterfall isn’t too challenging, making it enjoyable even for casual hikers. The trails are well-maintained and scenic, surrounded by lush greenery and peaceful nature. It’s also a nice place for a picnic — plenty of open areas where you can relax and enjoy the outdoors. The Des Plaines River Trail is awesome! If you like more of a natural trail. This is the one you have to check out in the Chicago land area. It goes from North Avenue all the way up to Wisconsin. Anyone who is a big biker and wants to do long distance should check out this trail. Highly recommend for biking enthusiasts! Just a heads up, there are no water fountains along the path. Some of the spots can be tricky to figure out when crossings busy intersections and trying to figure out where the trail meets again at certain sections. The all trails map can be very helpful when riding the Des Plaines River Trail.

A decent trail, but the proximity to O’Hare International Airport results in extreme noise pollution (and I say this as a real aviation lover). You’ll have planes starting or landing over your head literally every minute - there’s just no feeling of being immersed in nature at all, even on the most beautiful day of summer. Also, signage is almost non-existent.
That being said, it is still very nice and commendable to have a bigger patch of green in this (sub-)urban setting, and our sightings of deer, otter, and a fabulous cecropia moth made for a nice hike despite the aforementioned noise.

Run from North Avenue Jerome Huppert Woods to Rusell road border of Illinois and Wisconsin. I finished the entire trail once, and it took me over four rides. Road bikes with tires bigger than 25 will be just fine. This trail is mostly flat and not hard to ride. No restaurants, grocery, or any gas station to entire of trail, so be prepared. Some parts of the trail will cross the open road and the train rail, and you need to carry the bike cross of the rail, so be careful. Trail runs under tree shed most of the time.

Great trail with tons of open space. The main walking trail is well identified, and there also are some shorter trails that you can take off the paved walking trail through the woods. There is plenty of parking on either end. It is probably best to start this Trail at the Forest Glen neighborhood area just north of the Metra station parking lot. This is a Hidden Gem of the far Northwest side of Chicago. The trail takes a winding path along Chicago River and is connected to the blue star trail and that trail continues through Caldwell woods and goes all the way up to the botanic gardens. There is plenty of space for bicycle riders as well as for those that are walking or running.

Beautiful place to visit. Waterfall was man-made but still beautiful and peaceful. You can walk , bike,jog and even canoe. Lots of benches for seating and just enjoying nature. Our students went there on a field trip, and the event was wonderful! Although the rain at the beginning of the scavenger hunt dampened a few spirits, LK staff provided rain ponchos and enthusiasm that carried us through until the sky cleared, and the sun came out. We felt that the provided map should have had more identifiable landmarks, like the big wooden chair, the archway, identification of land areas/bays. The staff was awesome, professional, courteous, helpful and knowledgeable! It's a great place for a field trip, a place to meditate, or just enjoy nature with someone. A well-maintained, short but useful paved trail stretching about 2.7 miles between Humboldt Park and Wicker Park. It’s clean, easy to access with plenty of entry and exit points, and offers some nice greenery on both sides to break up the city views. There’s even a blue shock-absorbing strip built for runners, which makes it extra comfortable for jogging.
While it’s more suited for walkers, runners, and dog owners than for serious cyclists, it’s still a handy car-free route to cut across this part of the city without dealing with intersections or traffic. A great little urban escape.

Nice bit of variety of nature to see along both sides of the trail. Has a blue spongy shock absorbing strip just for jogger people. You can hit the yellow and brown trail after climbing the swallow cliff stairs- this is a highly congested area of people working out and training, the stairs are a great workout. This area is popular for a reason. The trails are beautiful and well kept. Ups and down on slight hills. A few bridges. Lots of creeks. I saw a gorgeous horse with its rider. Oh and a blue Jay! That was cool.
When it's humid or after a rain just be prepared for mosquitoes. Like others said, some days there's more horse poop then others but usually not bothersome. Not too many bikes, mostly joggers and walkers.
The stairs. The limestone stairs. Back in the day I'd kill those stairs. Now I almost died going up only once. But that's the really cool thing about the stairs - everyone is pushing themselves for whatever personal goals they're on and there's never any judging. It's like an unspoken respect and understanding. They are a wonderful exercise hot spot.
So there's really something here for everyone. You can stick to the stairs for an intense workout or enjoy the trails for a walk (or jog). Oh and keep in mind, Dogs allowed on the trails but not on the stairs.
Plenty of parking in the north lot (off rt 83) plus they recently added a cafe Pavillion- though I'm unsure of the hours. There are 2 Porta John's at the lot as well that are always well kept. My small bladder is grateful for that.
Highly recommend these trails at swallow cliff.

Beautiful any time of year and so many options for short and long walks/runs/bike rides.
Depending on your child(ren) and stroller, it's definitely an option to use it though the ride is bumpy and sometimes muddy. Also very hilly, so be sure to bring a stroller strap for safety.
I've been here for personal fitness, too. The stairs are a good strength and cardio option for someone who likes being active outdoors. They are partially shaded, depending on the time of year and day, but be sure to bring plenty of water!
If you're looking for an option for your baby, I've brought mine here in a carrier and backpack and we've wandered the trails for hours (and took a turn or two on the stairs). It takes some planning, but again, be sure to bring plenty of water as the hills can bring on a good sweat.
Many trails also allow leashed dogs, too!

The trail is exceptionally lovely and well maintained in all seasons. I will mention that it can be a bit narrow in some places for how heavy the walking and biking traffic can be during rush hours. I was very impressed with this trail. The landscaping along the way was well done and it looked like they changed up the landscaping at various spots to give the trail a different look as it progressed. No worry about traffic as the elevated trail does not intersect with streets. I do wish it was longer but that is because we enjoyed it so much. We went on a day that it was supposed to rain so it was not too busy and only had to stop riding our bike at a few spots in order to be courteous to those walking. A busy day might be hard to ride a bike. Parking was easy.

LaBagh Woods is a great option in the city for picnics, and long walks! There are a variety of trails, both paved and unpaved. Trails are easy to follow, and the woods are so large you could easily spend a day walking the park. The stream running through is beautiful, and the wildlife and native plants are beautiful. Their facilities (bathrooms and picnic areas) are well maintained - but still park bathrooms (you might see a spider or two). Parking is abundant. Little Red Schoolhouse is a wonderful learning experience with outdoor and indoor activities, displays and exhibits. Wonderful hiking and birdwatching outside. Young children especially love the indoor interpretive displays and play areas. What is LACKING is a place for children to eat lunch if weather does not permit an outdoor picnic. Today was 32°. Several prominent signs forbid food or drink inside although there are several kid- size tables and chairs inside. Too bad the girls had to leave to eat their lunch.

I attended the Cookout concert today and was very unimpressed with the venue layout and the process for getting in. I showed up about 5 minutes before the concert started and the line was wrapped around at least .5 mile long. They were channeling everyone through two lines and a handful of security checkpoints. I get to the security guy and he tells me my 14” crossbody doesn’t fit in the box and I’ll have to check the bag for $10 🙄
I finally get it after missing half of the first act standing in line for 30 minutes and I have to walk a quarter mile just to get to my seat. I was thirsty so I bought a water which costs $7!
Overpriced and inconvenient location- the trek alone took 30 minutes and signage to how to get there from the Metra station was non existent. At least offer complimentary rides to elderly guests if you’re charging $25 for drinks.

Graue Mill is an absolutely beautiful place. Growing up in the area I have been here a number of times. I have now been able to bring my son here as well, and he loves it. When the weather is good, it is such a peaceful place. The staff in the museum is fantastic. An extremely interesting museum within a historical building. We saw the live demonstration of corn being ground by the 173 yrs old mill. The forest preserve volunteer did an amazing job explaining the history and he was also very helpful when we couldn't find some of the items in the scavenger hunt sheet. Kids will have a great time exploring the 4 floors. The walking trails connect with Fullersburg Forest preserve and there is a beautiful river flowing next to the mill. Definitely recommend as a family outing.

We need more places like this! You can go on a walk, run, or even kayak the Salt Creek. I did a loop starting from the mill, crossing the Flat bridge and then taking a right to continue along the opposite side of the creek. It was absolutely beautiful especially with the late fall colors. The mill and the waterfalls are so pretty. If you’re interested, you can visit all four levels of the mill building and learn about a lot of things. There is plenty of parking all around this place.

A hidden gem in the north part of Chicago! We brought our bikes and biked along the biking trail - very enjoyable afternoon. Sculptures were done by many different artists, so we could enjoy different styles and appreciate the variety of messages the artists tried to convey. The Salt Creek Trail System is a great resource for so many communities. It offers a smooth black top path, nice stopping points, views of the Salt Creek, and quite good shading.
FOR RUNNERS & BIKERS … you will love the shading that is there about 90% of the time. Even in the late fall or early spring, the branches block a lot of direct sunlight. The trees also deal with a lot of the wind unless it’s directly aligned with the path. A few cautions… 1) Walkers and bikers are often pretty good, but sometimes a little erratic when you try to pass them. 2) There are quite a few deer that sometimes wonder along the path and don’t move very quickly. Some of those deer are bucks. Proceed with caution. There also are some foxes and coyotes. Probably have only seen them a few times but just some caution there. 3) There are a lot of intersections with roads. Only a few of those intersections are stoplights. Be very cautious when you cross 31st will road etc. even if there’s blinking lights cars don’t always stop.
FOR WALKERS & PARENTS WITH KIDS
This is a great path. There are some bikers and runners but not too many. There are also people that are out with dogs, and I have always found them very responsible. Younger kids will love to explore some of the off-road paths that lead down to the water. Most of them are pretty short. Some are a little bit longer. It’s a great way to explore nature and make you feel like you’re not in Illinois.

Nice little lake with an -unaccesible- island in the middle. There are paths either way starting by the parking lot next to the lake but I don't think it's a single path that loops around it, hence the 4 stars.
There's a hiking path too, you start it and then it forks North- South. Follow it to the North and you can get to the River Trail Nature Center (which is pretty cool, they have a little show room with native reptiles and fish. Also, some animals in cages outside).
I fished a white bass once, I threw it right back.
I know it's an authorized ice-fishing spot too.

For what they are.. they are amazing. The outdoor stairs are steep enough for a good workout but easy enough for kids and older people to make it if they take their time. Need a challenge? Go multiple rounds or go faster.
It is a very popular place so it can get a little crowded, but everybody is pretty respectful of everybody else. Restrooms are available. At certain times of the year they have food.

This trip was amazing! Fullersburg Woods and the nature museum were awesome. My kids and I explored the island and saw a lot of fish, frogs, and we were about 5 feet from a deer eating!
Then we went to the nature center and my kids could have played there for a few hours. We spent about an hour there looking at the animals and they also played with all the interactive areas.

These photos were taken July 2022, almost a year ago. I haven’t been back recently, but definitely a serene place. Been here more than once.
It has a beautiful path to walk, run, bicycle. The scenic view is meditative.
I’ve only gone in the mornings before 10am. I’ve never seen what looks to be a restaurant open. It always looked abandoned to me. But it’s away from front view so it’s not distracting. It does not take away from the value of the experience.
The restrooms aren’t bad for a public outdoor restroom. It did not smell every time I’ve been there so far. Enough parking space. Mornings seems not busy. The trail is at least a mile-2 miles.
Worth the trip if you’re not from the area.

This place was amazing! I gave it four stars because it smells bad though. Not sure if the smell was because it is built on top of a landfill super fund site or if the funk was coming off of a marshy area but it obviously was not enough to undermine my general enjoyment of the place. The smell was not constant but came on the wind here and there Attended an 8yo birthday party with skateboards bikes and scooters. We were able to rent helmets for free. Renting bikes cost money. It's a very large area with trails and ramps etc to keep an adventurous crowd of boys happy for several hours

Great for wheelchair rolling, exploring and simply enjoying the outdoors. My guys enjoyed watching the skateboarders and off-road cyclists as the path took us around the different tracks.
The paved paths are wide and smooth. We will be bringing our hand cycles next time and picnicking at the eating area.
It looks like camping maybe in our future too.
Not sure if it's dog friendly or how wheelchair accessible the bathrooms are. I will update after our next visit.

Love this trail youll find me here almost anytime. Been coming here for years, there's a nice trail where u can come across the river and chill there for a while. Same trail takes you by a small lake and you can spot beavers, red ear slider turtles, and snapping turtles in the water. You'll see deer here a lot, keep away, all sorts of birds cardinals, blue jays, hawks. It's a nice little spot to have a quick picnic or grill some burgers. Keeps the kids connected to nature. The trails are very easy, not hilly or rocky so a great place for kids or beginner hikers.
