Chettinad restaurant
Indian restaurant
Kumar Mess is a popular Chettinad food restaurant that originated in Madurai and expanded to Chennai in 2015, with multiple branches across the city. It is renowned for its authentic Madurai cuisine, particularly non-vegetarian dishes.
Dropped into Kumar Mess today and left happily full. The Mutton Masala Dosa was crisp with a bold, meaty bite; the crab Laaba was rich and finger-licking; Lemon Soda bright and refreshing. Service was fast and efficient. Prices feel a bit high, but the flavours, freshness, and overall experience make it worth the stop.
Govind S — Google review
The chicken biryani was good and the quantity was decent. The chukka and the mutton kola are definitely worth a try, but the quantity is less for the price. They give the dishes with a mutton kolambu which is spicy and flavourful. The food comes quick and the restaurant was hygienic. It can get very crowded during lunch hour. I was a little disappointed with the service as there were a few issues.
Dev S — Google review
If you’re in Madurai and craving some proper non-veg South Indian food, Kumar Mess is a must-try! We ordered mutton biriyani, kadai 65, nattu kozhi pepper roast, kalakki, and paneer soda – and everything was full of flavour and spice, just how it should be. The place was busy but service was quick and staff were helpful. Prices are fair for the quality and portions. Totally worth it. A solid spot for anyone wanting real local flavours.
Liya S — Google review
This place is well kept, it's neat and welcoming. They have a quick service and good staff. Mutton biriyani and kola are something which should be tried from here. For me both did justice to the price tag and it tastes good. The chicken biriyani is expensive for its small quantity and the mutton chukka has less quantity for the price. However, I still feel this place is not to be missed as the mutton dishes do justice to your Palate.
Govind S — Google review
The meals to my surprise was all veg dishes, you need to order nv dishes separately. you have no non veg meals option if you want to eat something light. They do give 3-4 gravy along with meal, mostly so so exception was the mutton gravy. Palatable, good for one time lunch. Doesn't live to the hype though.
Venkatesh R — Google review
I absolutely love the mutton biryani over here, I love the portion size & the succulent meat. The other non veg options are sometimes a hit or a miss, we tried the prawns pepper fry & it was okayish, could have been better. The service was quick.
Alex G — Google review
Worst experience of my life! Very bad taste — the biryani had no spice and wasn’t cooked well. No AC, and they still charged GST even though customers said not to — total scam! They served 4 pieces of “rabbit chicken” — we thought it was normal chicken at first, but later they said it was rabbit! What the hell! They charged ₹350 — way too expensive for such tasteless food. Totally a waste of time and money.
Prasanth — Google review
I have purchased Chettinad chicken gravy today Price is very high and quantity very low and they are charged Parcel charges 5% around Rs. 8.75, Small plastic bag price Rs.8.75 I will ask to Ponmeni branch manager he will replying using very worst word.. I don't like this Ponmeni branch

Amma Mess is a popular eatery in Madurai, known for its non-vegetarian offerings. Despite Madurai's reputation for vegetarian cuisine, this humble restaurant surprises visitors with its delicious non-vegetarian dishes. Located on Alagar Koil Main Road, Amma Mess offers a cozy setting with basic seating.
Amma Mess in Madurai is a culinary gem, celebrated for its authentic, mouthwatering non-vegetarian dishes that capture the essence of South Indian cuisine. Located on Alagar Koil Main Road, this iconic eatery is a must-visit for food lovers, offering a vibrant, homely experience with standout dishes like Mutton Biryani, Kola Urundai (mutton balls), Crab Omelette, and Ayira Meen Kuzhambu (fish curry). Diners rave about the rich, spicy flavors, with the Mutton Chukka and Pallipalayam Kozhi earning high praise for their bold, aromatic profiles. The service is lightning-fast and friendly, with staff often guiding guests through the extensive menu, creating a welcoming, family-like atmosphere. Despite its modest ambiance and occasional crowds, the food’s quality and variety—ranging from bone-marrow omelettes to unique dosas—make it a standout, with many calling it a “paradise for non-veg lovers.” The restaurant’s history, rooted in a 1936 street stall by founders Manickam and Amma Thai, adds to its charm, blending tradition with innovation.
Mohamed S — Google review
Did our dinner here at our one night in madurai. Mutton Kola and chicken pallipalayam were served cold, not much of a taste also. Mutton Chukka was good. But the nicest dish here was crab Kari Dose. May be the best version of Kari Dose I've had was this. Enjoyed every bite of it.
Tindipotha C — Google review
Overall another disappointing experience from a popular restaurant. My friends dined in at the place and got me a parcel of plain biriyani and mutton chukka. Plain biriyani was decent enough with a unique flavour I’ve never had before. There were lots of nitpicky things while eating which was irritable. Mutton chukka was one of the worst I’ve had which was way too oily and it got me cloyed after a point. Initially I thought the tiniest container in which it was packed to be gravy for the biriyani before my friends confirmed it has the chukka itself 😂. And the feedback for dine-in was that most of the dishes were below average. Especially the mutton brian fry was inedible and raw. Heard kudal fry was the only good dish. Service was poor with expectation for a tip. Prices are on the steeper side.
Vignesh G — Google review
Good experience.. Tried their meals and mutton biriyani with kola Aruna’s and crab omelette.. Biriyani was good and it’s actually enough for two! Crab omelette was equally good as is the kola urundai.. A bit crowded and hygiene is only ok ok! Everyone asks for tip even the cleaning staff as well as the security guards which I found a bit annoying!
Vivk J — Google review
The food was too good. I feel quanity is bit less for the price.the service is top notch
Pavitha — Google review
Hyped by a lot of vlogers on YT and over priced for sure. Food was average. Lime soda was charged ₹80/- 😡 unreasonable. Meals ₹145/- (rice along with 2 curries and a few gravy options) Aiyra fish gravy tastes ok, for a small portion at ₹270 can't digest! Sp.sea food omelette ₹330/- tastes average, charged exorbitantly. Nattukozhi biriyani was ok, but not worth at ₹385/- doubt if its nattukozhi or broiler! Overall the place looked congested (1st floor ac dining). Exorbitantly priced local dining with average taste! Experience yourselves.
Pran V — Google review
Visited this place in Madurai for lunch and went for the nonveg meal. The fish fry, brain fry, and suvarotti were all well prepared and flavourful. A satisfying experience overall.
Veera V — Google review
Recently visited a vegetarian hotel and ordered lunch meals. The food was very tasty, reminiscent of homemade dishes with less spice. The staff were humble and quick to serve, which made the experience pleasant. The hotel offers both AC and non-AC options, and the ambiance is very good. However, parking a car can be a bit challenging. If you're in Madurai, it's definitely worth a visit!"

Chettinad restaurant
Non vegetarian restaurant
Milagu Hotel is a no-frills restaurant that offers a mix of Chettinad and Chinese cuisine in a modest setting. As its name suggests, which means "pepper" in Tamil, the menu is filled with flavorful dishes infused with aromatic spices. A standout dish is the Pepper Chicken, perfect for those who enjoy bold flavors and a spicy kick.
Food was quite delicious. It is basically a home like setting so don’t expect ambience. Location can easily be accessible.
Anshuman T — Google review
Mutton biryani was good. Taste may be Madurai, not Chennai, Salem or Dindigul. Quantity a little bit less for a person. Considering that the price is a little bit high. Service is very good. Though Parotta was not available, they made four parota parcel specially for me. The entrance look is not good. But inside though old is classic. Overall good.

Have seen this 3.8 rating over 1000+ reviews and gone their for Lunch around 2.30 pm.. The hotel was totally empty.. Ordered couple of items from their verbal menu.. Mutton Chukka 2/5 Fish Fry 3/5 Muttton Soup 3.5/5 Naatukozhi Biryani 3/5 Fish Biryani 3/5 Milagu Sutta Kozhi 2.5/5 Kola urundai 3.5/5 Would say, they need to improve in terms of taste and the ambience. Have seen the article of their hotel in their wall, but it was published in 2009 /2008.. Almost 15 years ago..

Excellent food and service. Was passing through Madurai and someone recommended this restaurant for Chettinad food, so I took a chance and stopped in. The Nattukoli soup (first time I had eaten such a dish) was rich and flavourful. Fish biryani too was very flavorful. The people working here were very attentive and kind. Highly recommend this place.

It has both veg and non-veg. Avoid this place if you are a pure vegetarian. They charge Rs. 120 for veg meal, unlimited servings. Veg options are very less and food tastes ok. Very difficult to get parking.

Arumugam Mess is an unpretentious yet well-maintained restaurant that serves generous old-school dishes made with seasonal ingredients. The place is known for its unique paneer soda and offers a variety of chicken and mutton dishes, including kola, thala Kari, nenju Kari, kudal, kaal suvaroti. While the non-veg options are great, the taste of chicken could be improved.
Best spot for parotta and mutton varieties. Although the quantity of side dish was low, it was awesome. Parotta with salna is a must try combination.

One of the Good Authentic Non Veg Foods of Madurai . Had Chicken Briyani, Chicken 65, Brain Fry, Non Veg Meals ,Nethili Fish Gravy, Mutton Chukka, Mutton Kola. All the Food We Had for Lunch Was Really Good. Non AC Dining at Ground Floor AC Dining at First Floor. No Lift was There . Price Was Affordable and Service was Ok. No Menu Card was There but Waiter Was Efficient to Hold the Menu Titles. Management Need to Work on Washroom too. Parking Need to Do in the Corporation Area Before the Hotel and They ll Charge 20. I Hope the Hotel Needs to Work on That Part.
TRAVEL U — Google review
Food is good service too slow (particularly in ac) and servers not good enough and shrewd to do prompt service that's missing absolutely when we had non veg meals we asked for rasam and butter milk to drink rather than to eat, as we ate meals with non veg gravies. So rasam and butter milk is basic part of Meals while we asked to give it to us for drink the server gave rasam and when enquired about buttermilk he was staring at us like anything without uttering a word it took us by a shock and after a minute he said buttermilk is not available, such unacceptable behavior. The place is not the same I think like it had to be in the entrance small shop.

Im giving lesd stars only because they don't provide menu card.. also the server asks for tips even his service was just ok.. Food was tasty.. price was reasonable...

Had mutton meals which came with unlimited rice, mutton and chicken gravies, veggies and mutton chukka, then had mutton kola, mutton brain, mutton egg, egg vadiyal, etc. The taste of all the items was absolutely amazing.
Akash P — Google review
We went to eat authentic madurai spicy food but unfortunately it is not the right place. Also they wont add any extra spice even though you requested they will serve which already cooked. Very very worst experience. Cost wise also too much.

Worst Hotel Experience Ever! Me along with my family went on last sunday & server treated in a very bad way. He said, another family is waiting in the car to occupy the space and asked us to go & sit somewhere. It is fine for us to switch places but all about is the respect & manners. Everyone will pay for whatever is the bill amount. He (Server) treated us in a very very disrespectful manner. We left without eating & went to another decent hotel & ate our dinner peacefully with full respect & we paid our BILL amount also! TREAT EVERYONE EQUALLY!
Deebika D — Google review
They gave pepper kolumbu for parotta, no salamander. It tasted bland. We also ordered kodal fry, it had very few pieces, we returned it. Severati was ok.

Konar Mess, located near the collector office, is a renowned eatery known for its traditional dishes from the Konar community. The menu features offal dishes and the famous kari dosa, a stacked dosa with an omelette and ground mutton. Another local favorite is the elumbu roast, made with roasted mutton bones in flavorful spices.
Konar Mess is a legendary spot in Madurai, especially loved by locals for its authentic non-vegetarian fare. The menu features staples like idly, dosa, and biryani, but the real showstopper here is the iconic kari dosa. This dish alone is worth the wait in line generously topped with spicy minced meat, it’s rich, filling, and absolutely delicious. Just one kari dosa is enough to satisfy a hungry appetite, making it a hearty and memorable meal. If you’re a fan of bold flavours and traditional South Indian non-veg delicacies, Konar Mess is a must-visit. Simple setting, quick service, and food that hits all the right notes."

Very costly but not worthy with respect to taste . Chicken kari dosa price - 252 but gravy also not good..

We had a dinner here, really food taste is too good especially the mutton Kari Dosa is awesome and elumbu roast is tastiest one. If you can visit here try the food here. Cost wise bit high otherwise foods are good and worthy.

Hotel Royal Court is a luxurious accommodation located just opposite the Madurai Railway Station in Madurai Town. It's conveniently situated within a 5-minute walk from the iconic Meenakshi Amman Temple and close to transportation hubs like Periyar Bus Station and Madurai Domestic Airport. The hotel offers elegant and spacious guestrooms with free Wi-Fi access, along with two dining options, a fitness center, and complimentary breakfast.
I had a wonderful stay at Hotel Royal Court. The location is excellent – very close to the railway station and temples, which made commuting very convenient. The rooms are clean, well-maintained, and even have a complimentary massage chair, which was a pleasant surprise after a long day. The food is amazing, both in taste and variety, and very cost-efficient. The hotel is also baby and kids friendly, with a small play area at the reception that kept little ones engaged. Hospitality was warm and welcoming, making the overall experience even better. A great choice for both comfort and value – highly recommend!
Aish 1 — Google review
The hotel is a little old but they try to give their best. Rooms are spacious and have a message chair. The staff is also helpful. One issue, the restaurant doesn't serve ala Carte in the restaurant... One has to order in the room or opt for a buffet. Meenakshi temple is a 10-12 mins walk and one can easily get auto to reach there. Nearby restaurants like Sabreesh are very good. Overall, a good place if you want a good location with decent rooms.
Sani V — Google review
Excellent stay! The location is perfect, just opposite the railway station and close to the temple. The highlight for me was the exceptionally fast room service — my orders always arrived hot and fresh in no time. The staff were polite and attentive, making the stay very comfortable. However, I was not fully satisfied with the food taste, though I’m sure this is something the team will improve soon. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Madurai!
Arthi V — Google review
I had a wonderful experience during my stay at this hotel. The property is located right in the heart of Madurai and is very close to the Meenakshi Amman Temple, which made getting around extremely convenient. The massage chair available in the property was incredibly relaxing and especially helpful after a long day of travel. The hotel was also very child-friendly — when I requested food for my 8-month-old baby, the staff happily prepared it with great care. The regular menu was excellent as well, and every meal we had was delicious. On top of that, the ambience of the hotel was warm and welcoming, which made the entire stay even more enjoyable. Highly recommended!

Cons: 1. Continuous loud vibrations in room due to building air conditioner units. We developed headache due to the vibrations. Even the staff and manager are aware of it still using the room. First upon complaining they said will shut it at 9 pm but until 10:30 pm it was still creating uncomfortable vibrations. We could not even lie down on bed due to this 2. Food is not worth eating. There are very limited options at first for a vegetarian. Those also their cooking taste was not good at all. We ordered sweet corn soup and mushroom 65. Both were below average taste, in fact mushroom did not feel like mushroom 65 at all, more of a besan pakoda only. Chef doesnot know what is mushroom 65 perhaps. 3. Breakfast buffet had a decent spread but again quality was not very upto mark. Like they had aloo paratha in buffet but no aloo in that paratha. That was the only north indian item in menu. South Indian dishes like vada, idly, upma, dosa were of OK OK quality and taste nothing very good or bad in it Pros: close to station Massage chair in room (only service positive thing we saw)
NITISH S — Google review
Although the Hotel is quite old and feels dated, it is maintained quite well. Food is average. The best part about this hotel is it's warm hospitality! Each & every person is very polite, always smiling & always eager to help the guests. And last but not the least, every room has an amazing massage chair! Deserves a 5 star!
Sameer W — Google review
It is a decent hotel, supposedly better one closest to Meenakshi Amman temple. But just makes you think which pilgrimage you are on! The difference seems to be a personal electric massager in the room, though the hygiene of that thing is very suspect.

A buffet restaurant with a wide variety of international cuisine. The quality of the food is excellent, and it's a great place to have lunch or dinner. The only downside is that the menu options are limited.

It’s possibly our 8th or 9th stay with GRT and Aharam has always been the high point of our stay with them. Though the staff changes way too much - it’s always been a pleasure - this time round we had Aarti, who is a lovely person with the sweetest mannerism and Gobind (who has been a constant). They were able to accommodate our request for a late dinner on first day and served us with a lovely meal the second time round. Breakfast spread is amazing - hats off to Chef and baking staff- dinner the chettinad chicken , garlic naan, butter chicken(kids menu) and the Hakka noodles were real good. Thank you so much for hosting us
Ruchita A — Google review
A pretty average restaurant inside a good hotel. The service is really slow. And stewards seem to be unclear of their responsibilities - who should take order, who should check status of readiness of the dish, etc. The food tastes average, and we found the portions to be less - two chicken gravy dishes were not enough for 4 people. Their cream of chicken soup actually smelt of cream/milk. We ordered ala carte for lunch and dinner. We even looked around for options outside the hotel but there are practically no family type places nearby.

Zaitoon Restaurant in Madurai is a must-visit for those seeking Middle Eastern and Chinese cuisine. This family-friendly dining spot offers a delectable array of kebabs, falafel, shawarmas, and other flavorful dishes that will transport you to the streets of the Middle East. Despite being relatively new, it has quickly gained popularity among locals. Their special Zaitoon soup, featuring chicken soup with a unique sauce and cheese toppings, is highly recommended.
The food was so good and delicious. The service was excellent. A perfect ambience to spend some quality time with our loved ones. This was suggested to me and I really loved it.

We went there with great expectations, & we weren't disappointed. First off we bought moroccon bbq - it was tangy & cooked well. Didn't quite like the mayo though. Cheese naan & paneer butter masala - it was my favourite here really tasty & met all my expectations - sweet paneer gravy & soft naan! koji dajaj rice with chicken - the rice was bland for me & the chicken was tasty! Had a blast eating this dish. At last we had Nool paratha - it was really good but they didn't provide any sort of gravy for it and our tummy was full already. Overall for a restaurant this huge the price was decent and the quality and quantity was surprising! Would definitely love to visit again!

I had an amazing meal at Zaitoon Restaurant in Rameswaram. I’ve always been a fan of Zaitoon because of their authentic flavors—the taste, quality, and quantity are always top notch. We were actually hunting for the perfect lunch spot in Rameswaram and were so confused about where to go. The moment I spotted Zaitoon, I didn’t even think twice—we went straight in. I ordered BBQ Chicken Biryani, Moroccan Dajaj Meshwi, and two drinks. The food was exceptional, just like I expected. The flavors were rich and satisfying, and the portions were generous. The only thing I feel they could improve is the staff interaction. They weren’t very approachable or attentive, and it was a bit difficult for them to understand what we were asking. Also, no one came over to check if we needed anything else, which felt a little odd. But to be fair, the restaurant was fully packed, so they were probably very busy. Apart from that, the atmosphere was good, and the food absolutely made up for everything. I will definitely revisit and recommend it to others!

I most loved their service towards customers. Food was good and delicious. So much of crowd, but they handle every customer with humble.

I recently visited Zaitoon Restaurant and was impressed by both the food and the atmosphere. From the moment I walked in, the warm lighting set the tone for a cozy dining experience. We started with Crispy babycorn and spl chicken bbq. For the main course, we tried the prawn gravy with malabar paratha creamy, rich, and absolutely delicious, Vegetable Biryani, which was fragrant and full of well-balanced spices. My favourite part is the dessert. The service was excellent — the staff were attentive without being intrusive, and our food arrived quickly despite the restaurant being quite busy. Prices were reasonable for the quality and portion sizes. Must try and will definitely dine in again.

South Indian restaurant
Hotel Sree Sabarees is a popular dining spot in Madurai City, known for its affordable and delicious South Indian cuisine. The restaurant offers an unlimited banana leaf Saapaadu with over 14 dishes at a very reasonable price per person. The meals are served on fresh banana leaves, adding to the authentic experience. While the AC section upstairs may get crowded during peak hours, visitors can enjoy their meal downstairs where they can savor a variety of vegetables and curries.
I had a very positive experience at this restaurant. We were welcomed respectfully and shown to an air-conditioned room. The staff was attentive and provided great recommendations for the food. We decided to order a large thali 3 sets, and it was such a wonderful experience to enjoy the variety of flavors all on one big plate. The food was bursting with flavor, and we felt so satisfied afterward. On a side note, the food was healthy and clean. You can even see the cooking process while walking up the stairs, which I found reassuring. I didn't experience any stomach issues, so I really give a thumbs up to their cooking methods. The food was indeed quite good. The room was clean and tidy, and the staff consistently cleaned the tables whenever they became dirty. They were also very friendly. In total, I spent Rs. 650 (approximately $10.50). I’ll be sharing more photos and videos for a better understanding of the experience.

One of the most popular vegetarian restaurants in the city, celebrated for its extensive South Indian thalis and authentic local flavors. Pure vegetarian. I give one star less coz its very crowded esp during peak hours and sometimes people stand near the table to take over once it is free. It really annoys the ones sitting down and eating. Also they keep starring at us. Really not ok with that. Food taste is ultimate. Lots of vegetarian options. mini meals, thalis, dosas, paneer dishes, Chinese veg options like Schezwan paneer noodles—overall, a varied and flavorful menu. Average cost is quite budget-friendly—around ₹200 for two—making it excellent value.
Gokila V — Google review
We recently dined at your restaurant and ordered North Indian cuisine. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. The Paneer Butter Masala was overly sweet, while the Aloo and Gobhi Sabji tasted more like a curry dish. Additionally, the Singapuri Noodles had fruits added, which was unexpected and not typical of the dish. We hope you take our feedback constructively and make necessary improvements.

Had lunch at Hotel Sree Sabaress. The vegetarian Indian meal was served warm and tasted really nice. Service was good, making it a satisfying experience overall.
Vijaidran T — Google review
The food was really good and had local touch in it. Lots of food items like coconut soup ice cream n paan were complimentary with the thali and it had amazing vegetables which were must to taste items. We ordered special meal thali that had all of this included which costed around 219 rupees per person per plate.

Today I visited Hotel Sree Sabarees on Kamaraj Salai Road, Madurai, along with my boss, a colleague, and our driver, while returning from a customer visit. We decided to stop there for lunch, and it turned out to be a good choice. For anyone visiting Madurai and searching specifically for pure vegetarian options, this is definitely a place to consider. The food was fresh, tasty, and served quickly, making it convenient for travelers as well.
Seema N — Google review
Lunch is classic banana-leaf fare: hot rice, sambar/rasam that change by the day, two simple veggies, appalam and curd, with refills that appear without waving. Service is brisk, prices are sensible, and the dining hall is kept clean despite the constant turnover. Crowd notes: peak hours mean shared tables and a little noise; parking around Periyar side lanes can be tricky. The parcel counter moves quickly if you’re catching a bus/train.

Ajmeer Mahal is a popular dining spot in Madurai known for its delicious and high-quality food. The restaurant offers a variety of dishes, including Muttai parotta, Grill chicken, kothu porotta, kalakki/valiyal, and mutton chukka. Customers praise the flavorful gravies and recommend trying the mutta set parotta with their specialty gravy.
Nice place to have parotta. Restaurant is quite large and relatively clean. The food was delicious. Particularly the parotta. The kothu parotta too was quite tasty. The staff including the waiting staff and cashier were polite, friendly and helpful. Parking however isn't available for four wheelers.

I recently dined at this restaurant and had mixed feelings. The food was delicious - we ordered parotta, Madura chicken, and fried rice, and all dishes tasted great. However, the major letdown was the complete lack of hygiene inside the restaurant. The atmosphere was unclean and unpleasant. While the food was good, the unhygienic conditions were a major concern. Improvement in cleanliness and ambiance would greatly enhance the dining experience.
Jothika M — Google review
The food tasted good. Hygiene was a major concern. It was late and there were no other options available. Else would've chosen some other restaurants. Taking delivery is a better option, as you won't have to witness the unhygienic conditions

Went here after watching a video about food. Ordered kothu porotta, kalakki/valiyal, mutton chukka.. I am not a mutton fan normally but this was the best chukka I have ever had.. Food was very tasty.. Place was full with people having biryani n meals even at 4.30pm..wanted to try their famous ceylon porotta but it was not there.. One thing they should try to concentrate is on cleanliness. There was a lady sweeping our floor when we were having food and that's not a good sight, at least for me, when I am having the best chukka in my life. 😊

I've been going here for almost three decades 🙂 my best place for muttai parotta. Their ginger chicken with koottu is amazing and is a must try. From a humble start as a roadside restaurant, they have grown into such size with their food taste. Though there is no car park available in front as the street is congested, late at night you will get space for a carpark. You can also call this street the food Street of goripalayam. It's filled with so many restaurants.

Really one of the nightmares for me.. too much colour liquid in the food... Sorry for this review... Had the worst experience on one of the memorable dinner nights...

Fantastic parota making skills. Extraordinary chicken curry for parota. I liked the plain parota with chicken curry.. some chicken stuffed parota was decent enough which some might love it just like my wife did . Place and making doesn't look hygenic, would compromise for the taste once in a while

Chettinad restaurant
The Anjappar Chettinad Restaurant in Madurai is a traditional restaurant that offers delicious chicken and mutton dishes with rice and noodles. The food was very good, and the staff were efficient. I particularly enjoyed the fish fry, mutton kola, and biriyani. However, the cost of some of the dishes was a bit high. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an authentic Chettinad experience.
Anjappar Authentic Chettinad Restaurant in Madurai is renowned for its traditional Chettinad cuisine, offering a variety of flavorful non-vegetarian dishes. Diners have praised the chicken tikka for its tenderness and well-balanced spices, as well as the gobi 65 and paneer curry. The restaurant's interior is clean and inviting, providing a pleasant dining atmosphere. Patrons have enjoyed set meals accompanied by specially pan-fried fish, noting the exceptional taste and quality. While many customers have had positive experiences, some have reported inconsistencies in food quality, particularly with certain chicken dishes. It's advisable to check recent reviews or consult the staff for recommendations. Overall, Anjappar offers a genuine taste of Chettinad cuisine in Madurai, making it a noteworthy option for those seeking authentic regional flavors. 😘

Anjappar Chettinad Restaurant Is located in KK Nagar, Madurai. The ambience is neat. They play light music. Seating arrangement is good. No car parking facility. Chicken briyani is not that much tasty. Price is reasonable.
Rajasekaran D — Google review
Honestly, the experience didn’t live up to the hype or the reputation this restaurant carries. Based on the reviews and the way it’s advertised, I expected a lot more in terms of taste and overall value. We ordered just a biryani and a side dish, and the bill came close to ₹800 — for that price, the quality and flavor were quite underwhelming. The food was not bad, but definitely not worth the premium cost. If you're someone expecting rich Chettinad flavors or a memorable dining experience, this might fall short. The ambiance and service were okay, but for a place that markets itself as authentic, the dishes lacked the depth and uniqueness you'd expect. Would suggest exploring other local options in Madurai if you're after true Chettinad taste at a better value.
Esther M — Google review
Have been here couple of times and wanting to review about this place. It is a nice restaurant for both veg/Non-vegetarian. First of all, food is great and delicious. Ambience is great and comfortable. The only minus is their service- sometimes the service is very poor and the wait time is too high even though there aren’t many customers in the room. Service could be improved. Other than that, a good place to spend on your dinner.
Viswesh M — Google review
The expectations were so high with this place. The name conjured up images of chettinad chicken and biryani. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to its reputation or expectation. We were in Madurai for a 24 hour turn around and found this online and figured we can take a chance. Sadly, the place wasn't all that clean, the biryani we had wasn't very good and the chicken too did not bring back any fond memories of chettinad cuisine. I reckon once upon a time it had something going for it, and hope in the future they. can spruce things up and surprise us all. As the old saying goes - once bitten, twice, shy. (Will do more due diligence before choosing a place out of sheer nostalgia or sentiment!)
Navin R — Google review
The place is decent with AC. Food is average. Nothing out of the ordinary. Has parking space for 6 cars. Service is average. The sweet and salt lemon soda is great. Surprisingly they don't serve Ghee and didn't have it in stoke. That's what I was made to understand
Syed M — Google review
The food here is excellent! I highly recommend the Biriyani and Chicken Chettinad — both dishes were full of authentic flavor and cooked to perfection. However, the service could use improvement. The waiters and servers would benefit from better training in hospitality to enhance the overall dining experience.

Murugan Idli Shop is a renowned establishment in Madurai, Southern India, celebrated for its traditional vegetarian dishes like idli, dosa, and pongal. The original restaurant is highly regarded by locals for its fluffy and almost sticky idlis served with four varieties of chutneys and distinctive podi. The popularity of Murugan's has led to the expansion of its franchise across Tamil Nadu as well as internationally in Singapore and Malaysia.
Murugan Idli Shop in Madurai is a renowned destination for authentic South Indian vegetarian cuisine, celebrated for its soft, fluffy idlis and a variety of chutneys. Signature dishes like the ghee podi idli and butter onion uttapam receive high praise for their rich flavors and quality. The restaurant’s proximity to the Meenakshi Temple makes it a convenient stop for pilgrims and tourists alike. While the food is often lauded, some patrons have noted areas for improvement in service and cleanliness. Overall, Murugan Idli Shop offers a quintessential Madurai dining experience, especially for those seeking traditional tiffin fare.

I tried the ghee podi idli, onion uttapam, the masala dosa, vadai and also the ghee halwa. I’d say the ghee podi idli is a must try and cannot be missed. The idli was soft and delicious. The dosa and uttapam were decent as well. The ghee halwa is sweet and sticky, a good way to finish the meal. They serve these with three types of chutney, along with the traditional coconut chutney and sambar. The bad parts for me were that my vadai was raw on one side which was disappointing. The cleanliness of the floor could also be better. Worth a try if you’re in Madurai.

One of the best south indian places I've gone to. The podi idli and dosa were just 👌. I didn't like the jigarthanda very much but that's personal preference. Service was awesome, ambience was also great. I ordered through zomato too and it was brilliant even when cold. A bit on the expensive side though.

Ordered their signature ghee podi idli & normal idli, with filter coffee . Their podi idli was excellent with ghee and spicy podi flavor. Their complimentary chutnies were excellent and little spicy. Must try Madurai 's Famous JigarThanda from murugan Idli. It was excellent. Filter coffee was excellent. All chutnies were excellent. service was bit delayed, Card payments accepted. The main Issue if you are going is there is no car parking , we tried a lot to get a car parking at-last parked the car near a temple and paid 100 rs for car parking. The management should find a solution for this. so plan accordingly.
AASHIQ N — Google review
Had breakfast here with my family and the experience was good overall. We tried idli, dosa, uthappam, vada, and jigarthanda – all of them were tasty and of good quality, though the prices were slightly on the higher side. Their special chutney was flavorful, and the podi idli and podi dosa were the highlights. The place was neat and clean with good service. Jigarthanda was also nice, but it’s prepared outside and served only after billing, which makes it inconvenient to order as a dessert after the meal.

Wonderful taste, wonderful experience and great food, great service and very much reasonable price. Definitely recommend this place to everyone. Great place to go with family as well. We tried Bun Parotta with Mutton Chucka which was so good.

I was at their shop around 10:30pm and when i asked for Parota, the waiter said we are out , but we have kottu parotta. Thats my first signal for me to get out of the place. But then i decided to order kottu parotta, he took it feom hot box and served it and when i had it, it tasted like cardboard. Then i tried omlette and i got the burnt omlette. It shows the skill of the guy at the stove. The good omlette should look golden color and with a dusting of jeera and pepper. I don’t recommend this place.

Bun Parotta Cravings Sorted in Madurai I had been planning a food tour to Madurai for quite some time, and finally got the chance to explore a few of the most hyped spots in the city. We reached Madurai around 5 PM, and just as expected, our gut started growling. I had bookmarked a few places on Google Maps, and this one was close by — so we headed straight there. We ordered their famous bun parotta, thalakari, mutton kari dosa, and mutton chukka fry. To be honest, the bun parotta was a hit — soft inside, crispy outside, exactly how I like it. They served four varieties of salna (gravy) with it, and all of them paired well, but I still personally prefer the Kongu belt-style gravies for parotta. Thalakari was well-cooked — the meat was juicy and flavorful. Mutton kari dosa turned out to be a surprise winner — soft, not too greasy, and had a great balance of spice and texture. The only letdown was the mutton chukka fry, which was below average — lacked depth in flavor. Overall, a solid place to satisfy your bun parotta cravings when you’re in Madurai. Nothing too fancy, but hits the spot if you’re hungry and in the mood for something classic and local.
Sanjay A — Google review
We visited Madurai Bun Parotta Kadai for dinner and tried their famous bun parotta with mutton chukka, along with a variety of gravies they served on the side. Every dish was absolutely delicious the flavors were spot on, and everything tasted exceptional. One thing I genuinely regret is I didn't ask the service anna name who served us, his hospitality was amazing. He recommended us that we should come back the next afternoon to try their mutton and chicken biryani before leaving Madurai. I'm so glad we took his advice, because returning for lunch was the best decision we made on the trip. The biryani was outstanding, and the mutton gravy that came with it was equally impressive. We even had parotta again for lunch because we simply couldn't resist. As someone from Chennai, I know I’m really going to miss this place. I'm already looking forward to my next visit to Madurai Bun Parotta Kadai!
Harish K — Google review
Too many parota spots here in madurai and I must say, the bun Parota here is definitely not to miss. Making the parota is treat to the eye first, you can watch that and then get to the eating part. Airy, flaky parota with tasty salna. Do the chukka to side. Also try the mutton thala kari double roast. Nool Parota here is also a killer.

Had the bun porotta. It was just okay. Nothing worth the hype. We also ordered the chicken drumsticks which was 120₹ per piece. Total waste. No flavour at all. The place was too crowded. And everything felt really rushed.

A must-try in Madurai! The non-veg meals and side dishes are excellent, with great quality and generous portions. The taste is absolutely delicious. Every time I visit Madurai, I make sure to dine at this hotel. A special mention to Mr. Saravanan (from Anupanadi), the server, who provides exceptional care, making you feel like family. Overall, a perfect 5/5

I went after watching many reviews about this hotel in yt and insta. Frankly, it was disappointing mainly biryani which was the hype known. The ambience was great and service was good. Out of the dishes I ordered, the Fish fingers and Schezwan Chicken Fried rice was good and other dishes were average.
Mohammed S — Google review
Totally disappointed with this place! The tumbler they used had a bad odour and there was flies in our banana leaf. We had grill chicken which was mid and we ate naan and paneer butter masala which wasn't good at all! The gravy wasn't sweet and the naan was chewy. Then we had kari dosa which was ₹200 and the most disgusting kari dosa ever! The dosa was dry and tasted bland, it had very less meat in it overall it was the worst one we have eaten so far!
Aswath — Google review
As I visited Madurai, I went to this Krishna mess for our lunch. This place has three floors. We went to the second floor for dining as there was no place available in ground and first floor. The management of crowd was too poor. We were waiting to get a table but a few people who came after us directly went and stood behind people who were eating. Then after getting a table we ordered for briyani (Pura briyani, Vaankozhi briyani and plain briyani), lolipop chicken and nattu kozhi pepper fry. They also serve kola urundai from hot pack which was not even warm. All briyani tasted the same which was just ok. The pigeon (pura) was seperately cooked and just placed on the briyani. Nothing much special. Price was quite high too. Ambiance of this place was good. Overall , the Quantity was less and taste was average.
Shraddha D — Google review
Only positive is the ambience which is well suited for families. Other then that nothing seems good. There hospitality is too poor. Staff’s are rude and not customer-friendly. The dishes which we ordered tastes average. But the grill we got is too worst, smells bad and it feels like old chicken. It was a bad experience and feels disappointed.

The customer care and respect towards the customer is very poor. Not at all happy with their service. Whoever is working there has basic desency. There is no cleanliness at all. The hand wash area is inside the washroom where both men and women has their. No safety if we are using the washroom as everyone is coming inside.

Karaikudi Mess is a delightful informal eatery that specializes in authentic local cuisine, particularly known for its delectable egg, meat, and seafood dishes. A standout feature of this restaurant is its biryani, which strikes the perfect balance without overwhelming spices or excessive heat—something that often plagues other establishments. Diners rave about the Egg and Plain biryani, while non-vegetarians can indulge in a variety of options like fish fingers and crab lollipops.

A bit expensive, but worth it. I really like their balanced Biriyani without overdose of masala and chilli thats usually the case elsewhere, Just masala or more meat taste. Here you get some of the best balanced ones. I got addicted immediately, although it's a hit or miss if you order from home. Whenever I dine in here,Egg/Plain biriyani was awesome. Other Non Veg items I cannot comment as I'm eggetarian but my friend did enjoy fish finger, Kari Dosa, Crab lollipop! Easy recommendation if you are in Madurai!

Loved this place . Should try their breakfast sambar if you get a chance. Clean and hygienic . I will visit again just for their sambar and chutney . Visited the restaurant around 11 AM and had a great breakfast . The road is little busy and parking is challenging

Good food at worst atmosphere. Had pongal + vada + coffee = 110Rs + 10 Rupees tips. Pongal is good meets my expectation. Vada as well is good but not hot. Coffee decoction is good but milk is mediocore that spoiled the coffee taste. Don't use mediocore milk brand milk pockets and use milk from paal pannai as used by hotels nearby for good taste. Service is good - very fast. Though not professional service, it is ok. The main negative is their maintenance of the hotel. It was too dirty and not even in clean shape. They should have provided closed AC dining for this price (its not cheap) but chose to keep the entire hotel front (30 feet) kept OPEN in front of main road - all the dust from buses/auto/biktes are happily entering into our food. More over the sofas/chairs are very old / pathetic and we could see very mediocore. Even small restaurants keep their hotel environment nice now a days, not expecting this from temple city chain.

Nice place for Lunch near the Railway station area. Parking can be a big hassle as it's a busy & crowded road. The Veg biryani was pretty good & quite spicy. Family restaurant
Chandran Mess in Tallakulam, Madurai is a family-run restaurant that prides itself on traditional South Indian cuisine. The kitchen eschews packaged masalas, opting instead to manually pound minced meat with freshly ground spices using stone pestles. Their signature dish, Kola Urundai, is made from scratch and is a must-try. The cozy and unpretentious atmosphere of the restaurant, along with the friendly and attentive staff, adds to the authentic dining experience.
Best option for non veg meals for lunch .
HARI K — Google review
Authentic Non-Veg Experience at Chandran Mess We were on the hunt for a proper non-veg meals spot in Madurai, and while the internet and some friends recommended Kumar Mess, a few locals and Madurai-based buddies strongly vouched for Chandran Mess in Thallakulam. Glad we listened. We reached around 1 PM — the place was jam-packed, a good sign. Luckily, we got a spot in the A/C hall without too much wait. Here’s what we ordered: • Mutton Biryani • Mutton Chukka • Meals • Nenju Elumbu Chops (Goat Ribs) • Mutton Kola • Viraal Fish Fry • Ayira Meen Kolambu Mutton biryani was decent — had that typical Madurai flavour, slightly subtle but still enjoyable. Mutton chukka was flavorful and well roasted. Viraal fish fry was average, nothing to rave about. The star of the meal was definitely the Nenju Elumbu Chops. Initially asked for a full plate, but the waiter wisely suggested half plate since we were just three — and even that was more than enough. Masala was robust, roasted perfectly, caramelized beautifully, and packed with flavour. The meat, apart from the bones, was juicy and tender. Absolute must-try. Mutton kola was solid too — had that authentic feel and good texture. Meals were good, especially the nattukozhi kulambu, which stood out. That said, as someone whose taste buds lean towards kongu-style flavours, the rest of the gravies didn’t hit the same high notes for me — perhaps a regional palate thing. Tried Ayira Meen Kolambu for the first time — and that was a pleasant surprise. Slight tang, rich curry, and the unique taste of Ayira Meen (which you’ll only find in Madurai) paired really well with white rice. Definitely something worth trying when you’re here. Overall, a good, authentic Madurai non-veg experience. Just wish the gravies had more punch (from a Kongu guy’s perspective). Still, for certain dishes like nenju elumbu and ayira meen, this place is worth a visit
Sanjay A — Google review
Been here before and unfortunately had to stop here and this time (nowadays) like all others say this place is definitely not worth the hype and costly. Had some items in the menu and only the Kola urundai was slightly better. Had Seer fish (neymeen/Vanjiram) which was not fresh and also not properly marinated in masala, obviously a very small and thin slice. Ayirai meen kuzhambu was very average, provided a very small portion with very few fishes. Mutton liver fry - only 6 small pieces in the plate, looked like it was counted before serving and also under cooked. I usually don't write this much for an average restaurant, but this one is a real disappointment. Better hotels are out there with better taste and quality. We people from Madurai know this this is for the outsiders who take time to check the Google reviews before trying out. We had to stop here as other hotels nearby were full and what a tragedy this was!
Sanakan J — Google review
Everything is ok. Only one concern. They are not telling about the fish price with the meals. They will ask chicken meals or fish meals and not telling thay the fish price is separate with that of meals.apart from that it was a nice place. Kola is must try. Mutton biryani was soo good and must be paired with chika.
Diwakar S — Google review
I recently visited this restaurant and had a great experience. The fried king fish was perfectly cooked and had a delicious crispy coating. The prawns masala was full of flavor and had just the right amount of spice. The kola urundai was a unique and tasty dish that I had never tried before. And finally, the crab meat omelette was a great twist on a classic dish. The only reason I am giving this restaurant a 4-star review instead of a 5-star review is because the rate was a bit high. However, the delicious food made up for it. Overall, I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great meal with unique and flavorful dishes.
Mohamed R — Google review
Very over-hyped and over priced. Don't go behind the reviews. You'll end up paying lot that too not for something great as you see in any of the reels. I had non-veg meals, with meat balls and mutton Chukka. Chukka was average, but the mutton balls was good.
Thushara C — Google review
Chandran mess had mixed off reviews in the past and I had it personally, but now it’s truly a great experience having a meal in there. Visited a weekday, it’s crowded and we had to wait for a few minutes to get a table. Ordered mutton Briyani and Non-Veg meals which they severed three type of gravies Mutton, Chicken and Fish all of them delicious and it’s like home made. Fish fry must try. Their service is improved a lot and it’s a good and food experience.
SenthilKumar V — Google review
A great spot to sample traditional Madurai dishes, with menu prices ranging from ₹230 to ₹270. However, the portion sizes are quite too small, so if you have a big appetite, this might not be the best place for a full meal. It's ideal for those who want to explore a variety of flavors. The mutton and chicken biryanis are standout dishes, and the kola urundai is absolutely the best 😋.
