The Imperial Palace in Tokyo is the main residence of the emperor of Japan and has been home to a succession of emperors since 1868. The scenic East Gardens are open to the public throughout the year, offering a popular spot for enjoying cherry blossoms. While Marunouchi is known as a business district, it also offers attractions such as skyscrapers, department stores, and architectural wonders like the Shin-Marunouchi Building and Tokyo International Forum.
Tokyo Imperial Palace East Garden: The Silent Heart of Japan’s History Hidden amid Tokyo’s towering skyscrapers, the Imperial Palace East Garden (Higashi Gyoen) is one of the city’s most serene and historically rich destinations. Once part of the mighty Edo Castle — the seat of the Tokugawa Shogunate — the garden blends centuries of Japanese history with the quiet grace of traditional landscape design. It’s not a lavish European-style palace, but rather a living symbol of Japan’s journey from feudal power to modern harmony. Whether you come for the history, the gardens, or a peaceful walk away from the city’s buzz, this is where Tokyo slows down — and Japan’s story speaks softly through every stone and sakura petal. Visitor Information & Travel Tips Located right in the center of Tokyo, surrounded by the city’s skyscrapers, the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace (Higashi Gyoen) offer a peaceful retreat steeped in history. The most important thing to know before visiting: you cannot enter the Imperial family’s residence or the main palace buildings. The only section open to the public is this vast garden, which covers part of the former Edo Castle, once the seat of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The gardens feature wide lawns, traditional stone walls, and calm walking paths that feel worlds away from the city’s noise. The layout still preserves the remains of the honmaru (main enclosure) and ninomaru (secondary enclosure) of Edo Castle. The iconic Nijubashi Bridge, visible from the outer grounds, is one of Tokyo’s most photographed landmarks — especially during special imperial events like the Emperor’s Birthday or New Year’s Greeting. Entrance: Free of charge Closed: Mondays, Fridays, and during New Year holidays or official ceremonies Recommended Visit Time: 1–2 hours Best Seasons: Spring (cherry blossoms) and autumn (maple foliage) Historical & Cultural Background The East Garden sits on the former site of Edo Castle, a stronghold built in the 15th century and later expanded by the Tokugawa Shogunate. When the Meiji Restoration of 1868 ended Japan’s feudal rule, Edo was renamed Tokyo and the castle became the Imperial Palace — the new symbol of national unity. During World War II, parts of the palace complex were damaged by air raids. In the postwar years, the gardens were meticulously restored and, as a gesture of openness and renewal, opened to the public. This act came to symbolize Japan’s peaceful transformation and reconciliation with its past. Walking through the East Garden today, you trace the footsteps of emperors, shoguns, and citizens alike. Every stone wall and moat whispers fragments of Japan’s layered history — from feudal strength to modern serenity. In the heart of one of the world’s busiest cities, the East Garden remains a space where Japan’s past and present coexist in perfect balance.

I did not hire a tour guide or purchase an admission ticket. I simply went to explore the area. The grounds are vast, spacious, and beautifully maintained. The landscaping is impeccable, as is typical in Tokyo. It is a popular spot for walking and jogging. Visiting was definitely worthwhile.
Pedro M — Google review
We had the quick visit to the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, and even though visitors can’t fully access the inner areas, the experience was still memorable. The palace grounds are beautifully preserved and give a sense of calm right in the middle of the city. The park is covered with vibrant green grass, neat bonsai trees, and wide open spaces that are perfect for a peaceful stroll. Standing there, you can see Tokyo’s modern buildings rising in the background, which makes the view even more scenic. It’s a quiet place that feels like a hidden pocket of nature in the heart of the city, even if you’re just visiting the outer grounds.
Joel E — Google review
This review is meant to the gardens around the palace. I couldn’t really find the palace itself, as all the trails that led to it were blocked. Some people say you can have guided tours twice a day to visit the exterior of the palace, so that might be an option, but I believe the palace itself is a newish building and unassuming. However, the gardens or park around the palace are huge, and you start to see some autumn colours (end of October 2025). I took a long walk there, and it was very peaceful. There are also toilets at various sites (I used the ones by the entrance next to Starbucks and they were clean; no paper towels or hand dryer though so bring a washcloth). I saw many people enjoying the good weather and just relaxing. So I wouldn’t worry about the opening times of the palace (they might seem very strict), as I was, because you’re probable only going to visit the gardens anyway.
André M — Google review
It’s a great place to walk around and to learn some Japanese culture. Depends on your purposes, I suggest spending at least 2-hr to walk around. The walk is about 3-5 miles to cover the best part of the Japan Royal Palace.
Chris Y — Google review
Visiting the Imperial Palace is a must! Once the heart of imperial Japan, the grounds are beautifully maintained. You'll be impressed by the sheer size of the walls and various protective features surrounding the palace. Highly recommended for history enthusiasts and anyone wanting to explore Japan's royal heritage!
Andy B — Google review
Absolutely beautiful. It’s pretty cheap to buy the tickets on Klook and just pass the line. The wait isn’t terrible to wait for the elevator but the last 3 floors are stairs only and people can be a bit ripe so be prepared for that.
Tommy S — Google review
We visited the place on a Saturday, and did find a lot of tourists. But the place is huge and calm, so you will enjoy walking here. It is well maintained and can be explored without a guide as well. A must visit if you’re in Tokyo!

Shinjuku Golden Gai is a lively and popular district in Tokyo, known for its narrow and winding alleys filled with cozy taverns. This hidden gem offers a nostalgic atmosphere, reminiscent of Japan's post-war era, where small bars that can only accommodate a few patrons at a time provide an intimate setting for drinks with friends. While the area has gained popularity among international visitors, it still retains its local charm and may have some establishments with 'Locals Only' signs.
It’s a very atmospheric and enjoyable place to have a few drinks and chat with others. There are many bars — some great, some not so much — so it’s worth exploring a bit to find the right spot. Even if you don’t plan to go inside anywhere, it’s still worth visiting and walking around to soak in the vibe. Definitely a nighttime activity.
Tamas K — Google review
Came here during daytime to check out these one-of-a-kind famous narrow alleys lined with cozy tiny bars and restaurants. We picked one which had a cute Fatty Zoo Cat stuffed doll at door front. Lady staff was super friendly, we had a few drinks and really enjoyed the intimate atmosphere. It was not busy when we went but night scene would totally be different vibe. Worth a visit.
Cat H — Google review
Golden-Gai is such an iconic spot in Tokyo. I’ve been here so many times and always find a new little micro bar to try – it’s fun and full of atmosphere. Yes, there are a lot of tourists these days, but locals still come too. Most places have a service charge, which I think is totally fair. These are tiny bars run by individuals, and if we want places like this to survive, we should support them. It’s a special little corner of Tokyo that really deserves it.
Anne L — Google review
Plan to visit to experience the Golden Gai ? If you are a fan of tight spaces and pocket size bars, this is the place for you. Some bars even have a no-cover charge welcome signs to attract customers. There's a bar for everyone - American style, Asian style, Hard Rock Metal Heads, Laid back style, etc. etc. Walkable distance from Shinjuku Metro Station, this area is a part of the Tokyo night life. Pretty safe area this.
Satyen N — Google review
Everything is pretty full and you can expect to pay a cover charge for most spots. Was looking forward to doing a couple bars here, as I remember this from my last Tokyo trip, but ended up disappointed. Likely because I knew better this time. There are way better spots to find little bars or izakayas. Come here to check it out, but don’t think this is the best spot for little bars. We found a cool bar, met some locals and tourists, had some drinks with the bartender, etc. but we have done that and more/better in other areas. This review is not reflective of the bar we went to though, I left a separate review for that. Great time.
A&L — Google review
Golden Gai is in Shinjuku, a collection of tiny bars with small seating. Each is unique, according to the “master” or “mama” who runs it. This is a traditional for over half a century. They are more than just a place to drink and socialize. Many bars have a cover charge.
Doug H — Google review
We loved golden gai ans came back a few times during our stay in Tokyo! Such a cool area and there are apparently over 300 different bars. A lot have a cover charge or take cash only so make sure to check !

I spent a good time here! Visited 4 bars. It was a Monday night, so it wasn’t crowded but also no bar was empty. Very kind people

Park
Koishikawa Korakuen Garden is a serene and picturesque landscape garden that dates back to the 17th century. It features walking paths, a pond, and bridges, creating a tranquil atmosphere for visitors. The garden was constructed during the Edo Period by Yorifusa Tokugawa and completed by Mitsukuni. Its design includes elements evoking Chinese scenery and famous locations throughout Japan.
Though smaller in size compared to many other Japanese gardens, this one certainly doesn’t disappoint. We arrived around 10 AM and shared the space with only a handful of other visitors, making for a peaceful and serene experience. While it must be even more breathtaking when the lilies and iris are in full bloom, the garden was still beautiful—offering a true sense of tranquility. I did find myself wishing for a park bench to sit and linger a while longer. Also, if you’re into history,a highlight worth noting is the Full Moon Bridge. Its arch and reflection in the water together form the shape of a full moon. It’s not only visually striking but also historically significant, as it’s one of the oldest stone arch bridges in Japan.
Tina L — Google review
The entrance fee is 300 yen, which is reasonable for a visit. The garden is well-maintained and features several historical markers scattered throughout, offering insights into its past. There are restrooms, shaded areas, and benches that make it a comfortable place to stroll or rest. While the garden is pleasant and peaceful, it didn’t quite stand out to me compared to others I’ve visited in Japan. Perhaps it was the lack of visible wildlife—aside from a few birds, some lizards, and a couple of pale fish, I didn’t see much. No turtles, which I’ve come to enjoy spotting in many Japanese gardens. Still, if you're nearby, it's definitely worth a stop. It's a calm and clean space with historical charm, even if it wasn't my personal favorite
Arman K — Google review
An ancient Japanese garden located near Tokyo Dome, this expansive garden not only features a wide variety of plants but also many historical ruins. It’s a great place for walking and photography, and it also holds rich educational value. However, there are lots of mosquitoes here, so when visiting, be sure to wear long pants or apply insect repellent 😅😅😅
Eric L — Google review
Garden is quite small but very well designed. You can have some tea and snacks in old style tea house, enjoy tranquil lake view or take a walk around area. Place is famous for plum blossoms, but I think there is enough to see every season.
Liz I — Google review
Among my favorite gardens in Tokyo -- classic Edo-era stroll garden, beautifully maintained and serene as can be. The restaurant at the West Gate offers on-site meals with a view overlooking the garden, take-away bentos at lunch, and changes to a teahouse later in the day. Entry into the garden is a little difficult to find if coming from the north (just keep folloing along the white wall) -- there's a west and east point of entry at the southern end of the garden.
Dlk — Google review
Beautiful and peaceful full park. We were pretty much alone there with a few people passing by. We saw cute duckies swimming around in the pond. We even found a stamp station. If you are looking for some peace and quiet, definitely stop there. 🙏
Kawtar E — Google review
This place inspired retirement goals. Saw a bunch of elderly under a shaded tree to take pictures of a bird by the pond. An ancient spot that was build perfectly for one to enjoy till this date. Definitely worth a visit. It might be a lot more beautiful during spring with all the blossoms.

The Holy Resurrection Cathedral, also known as Nicholai-do, is a significant place of worship for the Orthodox Church in Japan. Its history is closely tied to Saint Nicholas, who established the cathedral to spread the Orthodox faith from Russia to Japan. This spiritual beacon holds a pivotal role among approximately 60 Orthodox churches in Japan. The cathedral's exterior is magnificent and visitors can enter by paying or donating 300 yen.
Beautiful Orthodox Cathedral in Tokyo metro area. Was able to light a candle and sit quietly for a few minutes during a saturday afternoon.

Visited while on holiday from Sydney for Good Friday. Welcoming support staff and beautiful Cathedral and grounds made for an amazing experience. So welcoming .
Mick J — Google review
The church looks well designed and well maintained. It was an interesting place to visit for somebody who is from a primarily Orthodox country. I give 4 stars because the visiting hours are too short and because it is necessary to pay a donation to go inside. Its such an unorthodox concept for an orthodox church.
Marko S — Google review
A nice orthodox cathedral in the centre of Tokyo. Although they took most of the religious icons and representations from the Russians, they didn't do a very good job in copying them in my opinion... The time we visited, they were performing a nice service in Japanese which was interesting.
Evelyn K — Google review
A stunning piece of architecture and peace in the city, you feel that it is more than a cathedral, the Byzantine style design and dome are striking and make it stand out in the middle of modern Tokyo. It's peaceful and solemn inside, offering a nice place to reflect or learn more about Orthodox Christianity in Japan. Staff and volunteers are welcoming, even if you're not religious, it's worth a visit for the architecture and cultural history, and I would recommend to visit on palm Sunday, and Easter to get the full experience🙏🏻
Sam A — Google review
As an orthodox Christian, i was surprised to feel this was my favorite church and service to visit in the world, even in a far away and foreign country. The people working here are very caring and professional to the liturgy and I felt right at home. I will miss Tokyo now even more because of this wonderful church.
Mat C — Google review
Beautiful Orthodox Church located near the JR station. The exterior of the church is magnificent. You need to pay/ donate 300 yen to go inside
CC F — Google review
My wife is Catholic, I am orthodox. The church “had” a book store, and was open at one. My wife went in to take a look as it was “open” and they said no photos allowed, I’ve been to dozens of Orthodox Cathedrals in my life and not a single one has basically charged someone to go in, and not one I’ve been to didn’t allow photos. The JOC needs to figure this out, as the Saint the cathedral is dedicated to is an amazing Saint, and I believe his relics are even there

Cathedral
Catholic church
St. Mary's Cathedral, completed in 1964, is a modern Catholic church located in Tokyo and designed by the renowned architect Kenzo Tange. The cathedral stands out with its contemporary stainless-steel exterior, a departure from traditional ornate designs. Its unique architecture features sweeping curves that evoke the lightness of bird wings, showcasing Tange's departure from his earlier geometric style.
The interior of this cathedral is breathtaking. The sheer engineering marvel that it took to build this structure is definitely worth the visit. There is a serene quality once you step inside, and you feel at peace and in awe of the design and structure.
FT — Google review
A little off the beaten track, but absolutely worth it. The sweeping concrete curves and moody light inside are stunning, even if you’re not religious, the architecture speaks for itself. Plus, the quiet neighbourhood and park it sits in is a lovely bonus.
Michael B — Google review
This is one of the most beautiful cathedral that I have ever seen here. The architecture of the building is modern and unique. The church is accompanied by a bell tower with four bells that has sound embracing the culture of Japan, and a also the replica grotto of Lourdes. Inside the church is an office, large place to have a mass, Mary's statue on the left, Pieta statue on the right, and also relics of well known saints, such as St. Francis Xavier, St. Faustina Kowalska, and St. Pope John Paul II. The location of the place is relatively quiet. It is cozy to pray in this place. The most important thing is the pipe organ from Mascioni. It is huge and the sounds suits the architecture. I felt the tranquility when I was inside this place.
ALG87 — Google review
Easy walk from the Gokokuji station. This designated Jubilee 2025 Holy Door pilgrim church of the Archdiocese of Tokyo is a huge (specially by Tokyo standards) imposing complex of a bell 🔔 tower, the main church with basement, several offices of the diocese and parish with many parking spaces. All is of modern architecture with clean lines and the interiors quite ascetic in its simplicity. We came at 4:30pm (30 minutes to closing time) on a Monday on the birthday of the Blessed Mother. All was quiet and solemn, almost sepulchral because of the dark except for the lighted images and displays of a beautiful rendition of Michelangelo’s Pieta, a very modern baptistery with a font that is practically a work of art, first class relics of a bone of St Faustina, the blood of Pope John Paul and a fascinating relic of the Biblical Magi (a gift from the Cathedral of Cologne). There is a lovely replica of Bernadette’s grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes in the grounds. Would love to visit again when all the lights are on.

They offer a really fun and interactive crash course on earthquakes, fire safety, and first aid! They spoke in easy Japanese, around N4-N3 level is enough to understand the content. Highly recommend to anyone living in Japan and want to learn more about disaster safety ☺️⛑️🙏

Need to bring an interpreter, no English services. The only activity available for non-Japanese is the Earthquake experience, it has a very limited spot in very limited time.

Read about this place so came here last week to learn and experience earthquake. It is just a short walk from Ikebukoru. Supposed to make a reservation in advance but there were few people so they could cater for walk-ins

this is a very nice feature that is open to anyone in Japan (free) to be given a brief and realistic free of how a respond in the event of a natural disaster such earthquake and fire, there is also first aid training. It was a very good experience and opportunity to see and feel how a 7 magnitude earthquake would feel like and to be able to survive. Along with prepare and emergency kit for such an event if it occurs.
Jase ジ — Google review
Interesting experience. The earthquake simulation was unique. Demonstration starts with fixed schedule. Remember to check before you go.

A really good experience. The film is with English subtitles, the personnel speaks enough English to give you the important part of the instructions. For some of the guidelines they also have English handouts. Knowing some Japanese is helpful but not necessary. The film is an animation taking you back to major earthquakes in the past with some learning from each situation. Fire extinguisher training is only from 9 years on, but smaller kids can watch. The smoke maze is also fun for small kids (ours are 3 and 6). The earthquake simulator is run as 6 with kids on board, as adult you can experience a 7. When you're not grown up in an area with earthquakes, it helps you to get some impression.

An incredible time at this FLW & students piece. Beautiful mural that is a must see uncovered during a restoration. Did a night tour and it was great experience and wonderful to add to our list of FLW pieces visited. Must see if you have also been to the Yodoko in Kobe.

Had high hopes to see Frank Lloyd Wright’s Tokyo building, since I’ve only experienced the Guggenheim in New York and some of his houses in Chicago. Unfortunately, it was closed for a private event when I visited. At least I could walk around and admire the beautiful exterior, but I’ll need to come back another time to see the inside.
J P — Google review
A friend told me about this wonderfully preserved historical gem tucked away in a quaint neighborhood. There were some events happening the day I visited so I couldn’t go inside. But it was sufficient to stroll the beautifully kept grounds. Stunning to see it with all the cherry blossoms and imagine what it was like when it was still an active school campus
Vince P — Google review
A fine example of Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural style, one of four or five still standing. Wright's most famous design is the Imperial Hotel, but he has a number of lessor projects like this one that show off his style and flair. Check the calendar on the website (there is a version in English) to see which days the school is open to the public.

The YAYOI KUSAMA Museum, located in a suburban area of Shinjuku, is a five-story building entirely devoted to the avant-garde artist's works. It features an array of larger-than-life pieces, from her famous infinity room series to polka-dotted paintings and sculptures. The museum changes its exhibitions twice a year, offering visitors the chance to experience different aspects of Kusama's prolific work.
Better make reservation in advance. The museum itself was rather small, yet each floor came with a little surprise. All in all, it’s a nice place for fans or others. It takes about 30 minutes to experience the whole thing.
Yen-Chiao H — Google review
Worth a visit. It's a small museum and won't take long to explore but it's a great display of Yayoi's work and her life. I've been to her exhibition in Australia 2025 which was much larger but this was still very good.
Roisin B — Google review
The artworks that are displayed are very typical of her style and the space is well kept. It is very small and far away; two transfers from Shinjuku. The neighborhood close to the museum was nice and had some cute places to stop by. The gift shop area is limited. I am still looking for a Kusama pin badge!
Laura J — Google review
Very good small museum featuring the work of Yayoi Kusama. Definitely worth a visit. Have seen both the Tate Modern and Melbourne exhibits, so this was fairly small in comparison. It was uncrowded which made it very enjoyable.
Mike M — Google review
I went in expecting polka dots (and got them), but what really stuck with me were the early paintings from the ’50s, quietly intense and beautifully obsessive. The whole space is tightly curated, almost clinical, but it works in Kusama’s world. The timed entry and no-photos rules felt a bit rigid, they did help keep things calm. A thoughtful little shrine to a truly singular artist.
Michael B — Google review
It was nice but no much to see! I wish they can have more. It takes less than 10 min to go through the whole exhibition. The best part is the view from the roof top! I was a little disappointed ☹️

1. new exhibition is on display since 15.10 entitled Fighting Woman/Painting Girl; 2. its relatively small museum, with four levels but not many artworks on display; 3. photos are allowed with two installations only; 4. tickets need to be booked in advance, 1100 yens; 5. at the tour end there is a small store - each client may purchase 5 items.
Aneta — Google review
Interesting enough, but is it worth the hassle with buying tickets online, reserving a time window and walking all the way from the next station, I don't really know. Would like to visit her island in the inland sea, but will definitely not going to this museum a second time.

Visitors can attend mass on Sunday mornings or Friday evenings to experience the beauty and history of this remarkable place of worship. Additionally, weekday mass is held at 10am on Thursdays for those interested in attending regular services.

This church has a beautiful architecture. Relatively small, but you can feel the presence of God in this church. This place is appointed by The Archdiocese of Tokyo as one of Jubilee 2025 pilgrimage sites. I was confused when I was there, and I asked the secretariat for help, and she helped me with her kindness. For the handicapped, there is a ramp available for entrance to the church, but the mechanism is a little bit complicated.

An impressive architectural masterpiece! This is a diocesan church named after St Francis Xavier, one of the first companions of St Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, whose members are known as Jesuits. The present pope, Pope Francis, is a Jesuit. This church has only 350 parishioners. The stained glass windows are equally impressive.

I want to my Jubilee pilgrimage 2025. It is a very beautiful place that inspired spirituality , this church is dedicated to Francisco Xavier who came to Japan before even being canonized as a saint, so you're familiar to Japanese Catholic history or the hidden Christians of Nagasaki or if you read Silence by Shusaku Endo or saw the movie versio o Martin Scorsese you will relate to San Francisco Javier mission in Japan. I was fortunate enough to go on a Friday morning when they were celebrating Mass and partake of the Eucharist. I particularly liked the natural acoustic, the unique relics, the tasteful design of the stained glass and the spacious benches with kneelers which are quite rare these days.

The Old Cathedral of St. Joseph, Tokyo's first Catholic Church established in 1877, has a fascinating history and underwent renovations for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The church currently holds mass services once a week and may see potential changes in the future. Its Greek-style wooden pillars reminiscent of the Parthenon contribute to its unique appeal. Visitors can admire the statue of St.
This is the oldest and survived Catholic Church in Tokyo first built in 1874. It was a Cathedral until 1920. It is noted that 50 Catholics were killed for their belief in Edo( now Tokyo) in 1623. There must be older Catholic churches in Tokyo. There is a concise exhibition in the right of the main entrance showing the difficult time for the Catholics before this church was established.

A nice little parish that was very welcoming to visitors. Mass was in Japanese, but there were guides with Japanese romaji, English and Tagalog and it wasn't hard to follow along. The priest repeated several prayers and the homily in English after saying them in Japanese. Everyone seemed friendly, and we enjoyed seeing their historic building and collection of items from Catholic history in Japan. Would definitely go again if I'm ever in Tokyo!

This beautiful church is not big, but it has simple and awesome architecture. It has small museum at the corner that explain about the history of christianity in Japan and about the Tsukiji church itself. It is also chosen by the Archdiocese of Tokyo as one of the Jubilee 2025 pilgrimate sites. There is a western style bell next to the main gate. The church has wooden floor, so be careful to not make some noise here.

A wonderful church steeped in the echoes of countless prayers of the many who have worshipped here. This is also an appointed Church of the Holy Doors of Jubilee year 2025 under the Archdiocese of Tokyo While not grand, it’s very simplicity and the solemn atmosphere induce a feeling of warmth and prayerfulness. The little chairs in front of the statue of the Sacred Heart to the of the altar indicate how children are early on encouraged in prayers at this church. The little history corner in a little room is full of educational and interesting tidbits about Catholicism in Japan with anecdotes about how they hid the Blessed Virgin’s image under the guise of a deity

This modest yet historically significant church, with a seating capacity of approximately 200, served as Tokyo's first and only Catholic cathedral until 1920. A small section of the church is designated as a historical museum.

The church celebrates its 150th anniversary this year. In preparation for Christmas, there are two concerts planned. See brochures for details. The concerts are really good and provide a welcoming atmosphere for Christmas. As in all Catholic Churches, the church provides a peaceful environment for interaction with God among its worshippers. Accessible via a 5-8min walk from Tsukiji Station (exit 3B) on the Hibiya Line and a must visit if you plan a day visiting the Tsukiji Fish Market and a walk around the area.

St. Ignatius Catholic Church, named after Saint Ignatius of Loyola, has a resilient history that saw it destroyed during World War II and rebuilt four years later with further renovations in 1999. Located near Yotsuya Station, the multinational church offers Sunday prayers in various languages to accommodate visitors from different backgrounds. The elliptical main sanctuary is a symbol of the church's unity and warmth, attracting people seeking blessings and inspiration.

Beautiful church. We came to listen to English mass on a Sunday. It was a peaceful atmosphere, with a thought-provoking sermon, and the congregation was lovely and diverse (it was our first time hearing African praise and worship and we absolutely loved it. We even searched for the songs when we came back home. Much love to our brothers and sisters). We will come back on our future visits.

Great experience here. The architecture was very unique compared to must churches since it's designed to withstand a magnitude 7 earthquake. It is a subtle, understated beautiful design with an amazing ceiling. We were also impressed with the number of participants ts and sheer size of the mass. We attended on a hot July Sunday and there were easily 800 people in attendance. Kudos to my wife for suggesting we actually attend mass during vacation!

St. Ignatius Catholic Church (Kojimachi) is such a peaceful and beautiful place. It’s spacious and surrounded by greenery, and also one of the Porta Sancta churches. What really stands out is the architecture — the ceiling is shaped like a flower and partly transparent, letting in soft natural light while keeping the place cool and calm. Truly a serene spot to pray and reflect.

Attended mass here with my wife and 3 children. It’s a huge church, very spacious and gets packed on a Sunday 12pm English Mass. We had attended this Mass after experiencing Mass at the Franciscan Centre in Roppongi the week earlier which seemed more like a Disney musical performance. You can imagine how relieved we were to experience the normal order of Mass here at St Ignatius. The priest was calm, prayerful and had a good sermon. The only negatives was that there seems to be random lay volunteer women at all these Japanese churches who take their jobs too seriously. The moment our child approximated a cry, they come up to us insisting it’d be better if we took them to the cry room. All in all, a beautiful church

Meguro Catholic Church, situated near Meguro station in Tokyo, is a popular attraction for visitors. The church provides services in both Japanese and English, making it accessible to a diverse range of worshippers. Despite its simple concrete structure without decorative paintings, the church exudes a profound beauty that captivates the space. Additionally, it hosts an English service on December 24 at 7 p.m., as well as a bilingual Japanese-English service at 11 a.m.
Last night's Simbang Gabi was a truly a special memorable experience. The main celebrant, co-celebrants, servers, lector, and choir all contributed to a beautiful and meaningful service. The angelic voice of the responsorial psalmist further enhanced the worship experience. The church's exposed concrete aesthetic creates a modern ambiance. The altar, adorned with symbolic elements like the gold-winged canopy and circular representations of the Trinity, is both visually stunning and spiritually significant. The acoustics are impressive, and the lighting enhances the overall worship experience. The Christmas decorations, including the tall tree and belen, added a festive touch to the Simbang Gabi celebration. Indeed! a blessings to join in the celebration with the other parishoners.

This church has a very unique architecture and atmosphere. Unlike most Catholic churches in Indonesia, which are often filled with statues, here the visuals are expressed more through paintings. It still feels solemn and sacred, with a different aesthetic approach. Definitely worth visiting, especially for those interested in experiencing how Catholicism is expressed in Japan.

We attended Holy Mass here in the evening of May 3, 2025. I was a bit disappointed with the priest's behavior (a Filipino priest) because he laughed while saying the prayers when he unintentionally mentioned Pope Francis' name & realized the Pope was already dead. While it shows his humanity & may be even looked at as something "relatable" by some, it takes away the sacredness of the moment especially when praying in the altar which must be reverent as it is offered to the Almighty God. If one believes truly from the heart, in my opinion, one doesn't dare disrespect that moment. This made me uncomfortable. And, when I was about to receive communion on the tongue, he blessed me instead & said he finished the blessing what more do I want? I don't know if he pretended to not know from my gesture that I intended to receive Jesus on the tongue but because of what he did, he left me with no choice but to receive by hand. I only remembered to share this now because I read from a post by a Catholic religious congregation (who thankfully are the ones who manage a nearby parish in my home country) which states that the faithful should not be refused communion if they wish to receive on the tongue as this is still a valid posture when receiving communion. And then after the Holy Mass, the priest stayed by the door saying "thank you for coming" to the churchgoers. This is a nice gesture but for me, it feels like we attended a mere birthday party, and the Holy Mass is way above that. For us Catholics, going to Mass especially on a Sunday is an obligation, we pay our dues to God, our Creator our Savior, it's the least we can do, we do not deserve to be thanked and personally I do not need to be thanked. I should be the one thanking God instead. I tried to understand the priest's perspective & maybe he's trying hard to please the laity. We need to pray for priests like him- maybe they sometimes forget about how to please God more than pleasing people. A saint once said we must pray for priests more than criticizing them. I hope this won't come across as a negative criticism but a constructive one, a food for thought, a gentle reminder from a humble, ordinary lay Catholic who loves our church, the church Jesus Himself established, which is the Catholic church, not protestant so we should avoid resembling them.

This catholic church has beautiful architecture, and I love when the sunlight come through the colorful stained glass. It serves mass for the Indonesian community in Tokyo every Saturday afternoon. There was a pipe organ available on the upper floor, but there is also a piano available on the lower floor. It can be accessed easily for the handicapped, and there are available seats for family with small children. The parking lots are not huge, and the toilets are clean and well-maintained.

During my recent trip to Japan, I had the opportunity to visit Meguro Catholic Church, and it was a truly memorable experience. As someone who appreciates the significance of religious sites and seeks moments of gratitude during my travels, visiting a local church is always a priority for me. Meguro Catholic Church is a beautiful and serene place of worship nestled in the heart of Tokyo. Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the tranquil atmosphere and the sense of peace that enveloped the space. The church's stunning architecture, adorned with intricate details and stained glass windows, added to its overall charm. The church provided me with a quiet sanctuary amidst the bustling city. It was a moment of reflection and thanksgiving, where I could express my gratitude for the opportunity to explore a new country and immerse myself in its culture. I found solace in the peaceful ambiance, allowing me to connect with my faith and appreciate the journey I was on. One of the things I truly appreciate about visiting churches in different countries is the universal message of hope and unity they convey. Regardless of language or cultural differences, the sense of belonging and shared spirituality transcends borders. It's a reminder that despite being a foreigner in a new land, I am embraced by a larger community of believers. I left Meguro Catholic Church with a renewed sense of gratitude and optimism. It served as a reminder that my travels are not just about exploring new places but also about fostering a deeper connection with the world and its diverse cultures. I am grateful for the opportunity to have visited such a significant and sacred place during my time in Japan. The only thing I regret is not being able to hear mass. So make sure to check the mass schedules before you go. Whether you're a religious traveler or simply seeking moments of reflection, I highly recommend a visit to Meguro Catholic Church. It offers a serene and welcoming atmosphere, allowing you to find solace and express your gratitude amidst your travels. #MeguroCatholicChurch #SacredSpaces #GratitudeJourney #TokyoTravel

I attended Sunday mass in English. It's a nice church but the priest went really crazy with incense. It's a small place and it looked like it was covered in fog, the priest kept swinging the thurible throughout the mass adding more. I was feeling sick and dizzy during entire mass even though I sat in the back and could barely breathe. Hours after the mass ended I still had migraine and a bitter taste in my mouth. I've been to many churches in my life and I've never seen anything like that. I can't imagine a baby or anyone with health condition being in that space.

When I was in High School (lived in Kanagawa), I used to go to Meguro Catholic Church (St. Anselm Church). Ten years later (I now live in Tokyo), I came back to Japan and I still go to the same church. There’s something about this particular church that makes visitors feel at ease and at home. It takes 5 minutes on foot from Meguro Station (JR Yamanote Line, Toei Mita Line, etc.) to get to the church. Exit via the central exit. They maintain a 12:00 noon English mass on Sundays.

The first church was burned down in the Great Kanto Earthquake, and the current church is the second. It was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1998. The first pipe organ in Japan was brought to this church by Welsh musician Edward Gauntlett. This historic church also appears in Natsume Soseki's novel "Sanshiro". The building itself was beautiful and the pipe organ was nice, but it wasn't very comfortable and I didn't want to come again. It can't be helped because we are a group of people who believe in God, but let's welcome them a little more. A disappointing church with beautiful containers. The pastor's talk is easy to understand, and there are loose boundaries with other schools, but I wonder if the country can't help with the handmade feel? Ando Memorial Church is situated in the embassy district of Azabujuban, and its exterior is adorned with lush vines, giving it the appearance of a hut nestled in a jungle. The founder, Tadao Ando, who was once the Japanese ambassador to Hawaii, has left his mark on this unique church. Visitors can explore the Oya stone chapel and admire Ogawa Michi's stunning stained glass.
(Translated by Google) Ando Memorial Church is located just off the five-way intersection of Minami-Azabu and Sendai Sakagami. The small chapel seems to be a historical building, so I received an explanation of the details of the building from an architect friend. The exterior is covered with ivy in summer, making it very impressive. At the time I visited, the attached kindergarten was just getting out of school, so parents were waiting in line in the garden to pick them up. When I told the gentle-looking woman standing near the church entrance that I had come all the way to see this building, she opened the door for me and asked me to come inside. All the lights in the empty chapel were turned on, and although they were out of pamphlets, I was politely asked to come next time the pastor was there, and I left the building in a good mood. With an altar in the northwest-northwest, stained glass on the southeast-southeast gable, and a penthouse that doubles as an entrance hall at the southwest-west corner, the church employs timber-framed stone construction, developed in the early Meiji period, with Oya stone stacked on a Western-style wooden framework, and Komatsu stone used in key areas such as the buttresses and drains. The surface of the soft gray-green Oya stone (tuff from Tochigi Prefecture) is engraved with the powerful "pickaxe marks" characteristic of stone from the hand-excavation period (Edo period to the 1950s). Christian church
Tokyo Union Church, situated in Omotesando, is a non-denominational Christian church that warmly welcomes people from diverse religious backgrounds. The church offers special Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services, along with dedicated nursery and mass services for children. With a congregation comprising caring individuals from around the globe, it has fostered a friendly atmosphere for nearly 40 years. Additionally, the church's inviting environment includes unique features like a vending machine, making it appealing to visitors.
Very friendly English speaking service in the mainline Protestant tradition. Excellent sermons and music. There's always a coffee hour at 12:30 after services. That's a great way to meet locals.

I visited this church hoping to find a sense of community and connection, but it was a disappointing experience. It felt outdated from the moment I walked in, like I was transported 50 years ago. The music was hard to sit through—old-fashioned instruments, organ piano effects, and songs that are so old they seem to require you to be in a choir to sing. It didn’t feel uplifting but rather depressing. The service itself dragged. The first 30 minutes were filled with announcements from different people, with literally zero presence. When the pastor finally started, I struggled to stay focused. Her monotone delivery and lack of presence made it hard to connect with the message. Coming from LA, where sermons are relatable and full of energy, this was night and day. Even what the pastors and choir members were wearing looked like it was from decades ago. I respect the church and its traditions, but this experience felt like it was stuck in the past. It definitely needs a 360-degree modernization of the music and structure to create a more engaging and relatable experience for people of all ages. Imagine you’re not a Christian and walk into this church—you definitely wouldn’t come out wanting to turn to this faith. I HAVE NO IDEA how this place has great reviews. Maybe it's adequate enough for older people, or people who have never experienced a vibrant church energy.

Since moving to Tokyo earlier this year, I’ve made Tokyo Union Church my spiritual home. Initially, I was drawn in by its photos on Google Maps and its central location. But what truly convinced me to stay was the welcoming and genuinely open atmosphere. Every service leaves me uplifted and inspired. The messages are always relevant, thoughtfully delivered, and offer fresh, practical insights that stay with me. I especially value that the church approaches the Bible with a balanced and thoughtful perspective—never extreme or dogmatic, but always inclusive and respectful of different viewpoints. One unexpected delight has been the choir, whose level of talent and coordination genuinely astonished me; it feels almost like attending a professional concert each week. It’s my kind of church.

The Franciscan Chapel Center, also known as Roppongi Catholic Church, is a beautiful Roman Catholic church located in Tokyo near Roppongi station. It is run by Franciscan monks and offers multiple English mass timeslots on Sundays. The community feel at the church is strong, with friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere for newcomers. The Christmas Eve and Christmas day masses are particularly special, providing a beautiful experience for those looking to pray and celebrate the holiday season.
Grateful that they have English mass (9AM, 11AM, 5PM on Sundays) here in the beautiful church, only a short walk away from Roponggi Station. The community are welcoming, sermon was interesting - a recharge time during holidaying in Tokyo. Thank you for your hospitality.

A very warm and welcoming parish community, led by Fr Clifford. I attended the Sat sunset mass here and was grateful for the opportunity to receive Christ during my time in Tokyo. Father also hears confession before mass. I also appreciated the choir who sang beautifully. Father gave a thoughtful homily which not only broke the Word but also got me to reflect. Overall, a spiritual experience.

Stepping into the Franciscan Chapel Center in Roppongi was like discovering a hidden oasis amidst the vibrant, ceaseless energy of Tokyo. I was so incredibly happy to find a place where I could truly find peace and solitude to pray, especially in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Roppongi. The location itself is surprisingly accessible yet feels wonderfully set apart from the commercial clamor. As soon as I entered, a profound sense of calm washed over me. The chapel, while not overly grand, is beautifully maintained and exudes a welcoming, reverent atmosphere. The soft lighting, the quiet hum of serenity, and the sense of devotion from those present all contribute to an environment that truly fosters reflection and prayer. It's a testament to this place that, even in one of the most bustling districts of Tokyo, you can find such genuine tranquility. For anyone seeking a quiet space for spiritual contemplation, whether for Mass or just a moment of personal prayer, the Franciscan Chapel Center is an absolute gem. It's a truly invaluable resource for both locals and visitors alike, offering a much-needed respite from the urban rush. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a spiritual anchor in the heart of the city.

Brought my wife and 3 children to mass on a business trip to Japan. The mass felt like a Disney on Ice performance. It was really strange. I’ve never felt this way about any mass in any country throughout the world. Also, as we entered, some ladies separated my family and a few friends we were with and made us sit in the spot designated for families only. The moment my 4 year old made any sort of noise during mass, I could see and feel the tension of these parishioner ladies who you could tell just wanted us to leave. They then gave in to the pressure and asked us to enter this random kids room where you can watch the mass live while kids run around, play with toys and read books. Very very strange. Then I happened to walk past the priest right after mass and he didn’t even pretend to be nice to us and kind of ignored our ‘good morning’. We went to St Ignatius parish the following Sunday. Some similarities in terms of random lay women taking their volunteer jobs too seriously by instructing us where we can/can’t sit. But at least St Ignatius church stuck to the order of the mass and weren’t interested in a Disney performance.

Tokyo Baptist Church is a welcoming place for international Christian believers, offering services in English and encouraging everyone to participate in its activities. The church is known for its passionate energy and rich musicality during worship time. Located near Daikanyama Station, it hosts various events such as pre-Christmas celebrations with prayers and music, as well as a candlelight service on December 24. The community and pastor are highly regarded for their kindness, making it a nice place to pray.
I visited this church on a Saturday evening service and Pastor Yozawa greeted me very warmly; he then proceeded to preach passionately from 1 Corinthians 2. His preaching of the Word is powerful and full of truth. This church is Christ centered and the message is focused on the gospel. I felt blessed to have the opportunity to worship in Tokyo and heard the Word.

I came a few times a few years ago and enjoyed the church and tried to check it out again now in Nov 2022. The staff and leadership has changed . We did not feel welcomed, unfortunately. Now it seems they have become pretty strict and legalistic , sadly . Hopefully they will remember God’s heart more than their manmade rules . I really pray for this as we were told by an usher that we aren’t allowed to sing during worship time.

UCCJ Ginza Church is a small-scale Protestant church located in the heart of Ginza. Unlike many small churches, it remains open for private use and welcomes visitors to admire its bells at the entrance. It's conveniently situated for those planning to explore the shopping district of Ginza. The Methodist church offers morning services on Sundays and midday services on weekdays, lasting about 30 minutes from 12:15.

Some people think that Mitsukoshi and Wako are ringing the bell, but that's not the case, it's the bell of this church. We are pleased to inform you that evening worship will be held on Sunday from 6:00 pm. This is a historic church with a history of over 100 years. (Translated by Google) Today was my first time attending a service at this church. There is an entrance when you go up the stairs, and a reception desk when you go inside. At the reception desk, you can receive a weekly report (a program that describes the flow of worship) and a printout of the Bible passages to be read during today's worship. You can get something to read during the service at the reception, and hymns are placed in front of your seats, so I don't think it's a problem if you come empty-handed. Worship begins with a hymn, and everyone in attendance reads the Psalms and the Lord's Prayer, sings a hymn, and reads the Bible. Then, the pastor will preach on today's Bible passage. The flow of the worship service is a typical Protestant church style, so if you attend the service at this church, you will be able to understand what a Protestant church is like. The inside of the synagogue is quite spacious, with seating up to the second floor, making it large enough for many people to attend. In fact, many people attended today's service. I got the impression that the church was large, as it was located in a prime location in Tokyo. Also, there were about 7 people, including myself, who attended the church service for the first time today. It may have been a coincidence, but I got the impression that there were a lot of new visitors. I think this is a church that is easy for people to attend, including those who come from far away to the Ginza area for business.

(Translated by Google) First of all, I should state that I'm not a Christian. So why did I go out of my way to visit a Protestant church? Well, it was for personal reasons. Small churches don't often have a pastor or priest on site, and it's not uncommon for them to be closed, but this one is located in the heart of Ginza, so it's always open. I'm sure that just seeing the Ginza bell next to the entrance would make a believer's heart flutter. Now, going up to the second floor, the small chapel is immediately on the left. Apparently, Sunday school and other classes are held here. The main chapel is on the third floor. Because it's in the heart of Ginza and is part of a building, it feels a little cramped, but it can accommodate about 300 people at full capacity. Currently, seats are spaced out, so the capacity is about half that, around 150 people. That's all I learned from the guide. Because it's so large, a guide will accompany you, so if you have any questions, why not stop by?

Anglican church
Meijiro Seikokai is a serene church located near Mejiro Station, housed in a retro building dating back to 1924. The interior boasts a 100-year-old stained glass window gifted by an English church, adding to its historical charm. Visitors are welcome to explore the church free of charge and are encouraged to take in the tranquil atmosphere inside. The community is known for its warm and friendly nature, making it a welcoming place for all who visit.
(Translated by Google) The garbage-filled streets of the shopping district are cut open, and the beauty of the church's stained glass window takes your breath away under the darkness of the sky. Ironically, when I turned to get a closer look, I was blocked by the entrance ridge. I wanted to know more and was surprised to see the detailed information on the website: ``This stained glass was originally built in the Abbey of Epiphany (the mother monastery of the Abbey of Nazareth in Tokyo) in Truro, the center of the Conwal region on the southwestern tip of England Island. It was located in front of the chapel in the old building. When the hospital was relocated due to the deterioration of the building, the church took over the building free of charge after the prayers of many people involved.''It must have been a long journey from far away. Moreover, the arabesque patterns used to decorate the stained glass windows were influenced by Japonism, which was popular at the time, so I think there is some kind of connection between people and the world around them. This website is well designed and has good explanations. It says that the Episcopal Church is somewhere between Catholicism and Protestantism, and it seems to be deeply rooted in the local community, with volunteers running cram schools.

(Translated by Google) I have just become a Christian and am still in the process of going to various churches, but Yodobashi Church had a nice building and seemed a bit difficult to enter, so I was nervous at first. When I told them it was my first time, they filled out my name and gave me a booklet. The pastor's talk also had the atmosphere and speaking style of a veteran pastor, which made me nervous. But over time, I got used to it. After the service, a member of staff offered to show us around the building, called the first-timers to the table, introduced themselves, and asked, ``How was your visit to church?'' I was able to talk with you all, which made me even more nervous, and I have been attending these meetings continuously (lol). But I don't get any bad looks, and everyone is so kind! At first, I was nervous because I didn't know much about going to that table, but the church seemed friendlier and gave me a better impression. (Translated by Google) Visited on a tour of Ikebukuro's famous architecture After seeing Frank Lloyd Wright at Jiyū Gakuen Myokokan, I visited Aichi Endo, who designed Myachikan together with Frank Lloyd Wright. The window frame is a design unique to Frank Lloyd Wright architecture. The building is exactly as it was when it was first constructed, but the only thing that has been renovated is actually the window frames. Apparently, the pipe organ was renovated from a wooden frame to an aluminum sash in order to soundproof it. Of course, the distinctive design remains the same and is custom made. The hard work of the sash shop is remembered. Good job sash shop! The large circular window has a wooden frame with a cross design, and is original!
