The Bishops canning pork belly was a complete flop for us. The sweetcorn completely over powered the dish and pork belly was nothing to rave about. The Tequila Slammer cleanser was a hit, 10/10 for the theatrics and did what it was suppose to do. But lots of the places I’ve tried do not live up to these myths and I think some Australian Indian restaurants could brag a bit more about their authenticity and fusions. We arrived basically as they were opening for dinner - and we were first through the door. As we left, the place was beginning to fill, but frankly, this place should’ve had a line out the door. In recent years they have been rightly recognised by the Michelin Guide (they held a Michelin Plate, featured frequently there and had once flirted with the Bib Gourmand and other accolades, if I’m not mistaken). But don’t worry about the trendy pretentiousness of those things. The East India Cafe has food that speaks of pride, skill, and heritage. The owners have built a decor, menu and experience inspired by the culinary histories of Anglo-Indian trade routes, Raj-era club dining - obviously not a museum for the moral stains of colonialism, but a culinary celebration of the best parts of the culinary tradition in terms of spice, techniques, and balance of flavours, in a dining space presenting starched linen, formal wait staff and multi-course meals. The food was phenomenal. We opened with the Crab in Three Ways — the textures and flavours made me glad I tried this. The Lemon Duck Tikka followed, it was moist and well marinated - both I would order again. The mains, the Railway Lamb Curry - might be the best curry I’ve had in the UK so far, I can’t think of a better one that is for sure. The Beef Karachi might be the second best one I’ve had - both were the right amounts of rich, complex, and built for savouring and mopping up the sauce with the bread and rice. All mains are accompanied with Afghani Pilaf, Khachumber, and Tomato Chutney and are served for the table to share. Our waiter was friendly and formal and answered our questions and gave us some recommendations. He also made sure we knew that more rice, more paratha, or more anything was only a word away. He embodied the ethos of the place for me, understated, generous, and entirely focused on the guest. While the historical East India Company may have created some of the ugliest chapters of global trade - the culinary legacy of the East India Café has created something beautiful and enduring from this history. We noticed on the way that places like Prezzo were full - after our dinner, I thought more the fool them! We had two courses with several appetisers in-between. So this time I decided to pick a random day just to go and finally try this restaurant and I’m so glad I did it. TLDR: - way too expensive for what you get - would not go back for the spa package - food was amazing - very very slow service - not enough space in the spa, people had to share loungers - can't use the pool - beautiful place, interior is stunning - very poor signage for parking - only one shower and no where to get changed - very nice staff but many felt quite inexperienced/not super proactive (despite genuinely being so nice and seemingly trying their best) - spa was too small for quantity of people I'll start with the good! The location/building/interior etc is all absolutely stunning. The staff were so lovely and it felt like a very luxurious setting which was perfect. And the food was so delicious. The not so good: we started off on a bad foot as the signage was so poor (from 100m before the hotel where there was a misleading sign meaning we took a wrong turn down a narrow country path, all the way to actually just where we were meant to park for the spa - all of which delayed us by about 10 minutes). I know this sounds silly but it meant we were quite stressed and rushed when we arrived and it set us up badly as instead of feeling really excited when we arrived, I was just finding more things than I would usually find wrong, whilst trying to seem like it didn't matter so as not to ruin it for my family. My treatment got cut off short and I got chatting to another lady in the spa who said her's had been shortened by 15 minutes! I really tried to not let it taint the morning but you do really expect high quality when you're paying as much as we did and for me it wasn't there. There weren't enough seats in the spa area so people were having to share loungers, and there's not really enough room to comfortably go in the jacuzzi if other people are in there. Effectively you cannot use the pool (at least in winter and it's not part of/near the spa) - you have to walk about 150m outside around the hotel to get to the pool which was not warm enough for a winter spa morning, and also felt quite embarrassing walking around the hotel in our robes. We waited for at least 20 minutes for our coffee when we could have been using the spa, and it was cold when it arrived. Also at the lunch, our drinks came after our starters and mains despite asking two times, and the mains took over 45 minutes to arrive. The changing rooms were a bit of a joke as there was one shower (at one moment there was 8 of us in the changing room) and genuinely no room to change (I'm not even been dramatic, me and another woman just didn't know how to change in there as there were two stools and about two meter squared floor space). I ended up having to go to the disabled change and she went into the toilet. Only one hair dryer that stopped working when I tried it (it had worked for others though). This is less of a problem, but the lockers weren't working so we couldn't get in to retrieve our stuff - the lady came with a master key but just another thing that takes away from the general feeling of it being high quality. She also was about to leave another person's locker open when she unlocked it thinking it was mine, and my mum and I had to tell her she can't do that. She did then lock it but concerned me that could have happened. Treatment was pleasant but was light even though she asked my preferred pressure level and I asked for strong. We booked after being recommended it and we were not disappointed! The ambience was cosy and had nice chatter. All the food in rich in flavour and unique. The duck boa and wagyu sliders were highlights of the meal. They even made a birthday plate on the house!!
