State government office
The Louisiana State Capitol, opened in 1931, replaced the Old State Capitol and is home to the Louisiana State Legislature. Unlike many state capitol buildings with large domes, it rises dramatically from the ground and stands as the tallest building in Baton Rouge. Nicknamed 'Huey Long's Monument,' it reflects art deco architecture from the Gilded Age and features an observation deck on top.
Tallest State Capitol building in the US! This building is more than just the tallest, it’s also full of beautiful art deco architecture features! Hard to fathom this building being built during the Great Depression. It’s worth researching more about Gov/US Senators Huey P. Long before visiting to understand its significance more. No worries if you don’t have the time, it’s worth the visit just to admire the architecture and great views of the Mississippi River. FYI… it’s free to visit and the top is open to walk around outside so it you’re afraid of heights this might not be for you.
Candace M — Google review
It's a great building. There are 49 stairs coming into the building representing the 50 states. The inside doors were all engraved with carvings of the history. This is where former governor Huey Long was shot. There are still bullet holes in the walls. The state senate and legislators meet. On the 27th floor, you are able to see a 360 view of the area. Another must see stop.
Traveling N — Google review
If I was to say I enjoyed the Louisiana State Capitol and Baton Rouge I would be lying. That is a massive understatement. This towering building lies in a garden just next to downtown Baton Rouge with good parking and bus connections. There’s even a secret second lift to levels 24-30 with a viewing platform off level 27 with breathtaking views of downtown Baton Rouge, sugar mills, the airport, Lousiana State University, and much more. If I could go back to Baton Rouge I’d visit here again.
Trainandbus123 — Google review
I have been to all 50 states and all 50 state capitals. This would be towards the middle or higher end of the bottom. 30 stories tall, which is cool. Observation deck on the top, which is cool it just does not feel like a state capital building. It’s an office building. Not a lot of character. Not a lot of beauty. The grounds of the Building are very nice.
Kevin S — Google review
The Louisiana State Capitol marks our 12th statehouse visit, and so far, it ranks as one of our favorites. While the exterior didn’t exactly wow me—though that’s probably just personal preference, since I’m not a huge fan of the high-rise style Capitol buildings—we found plenty to appreciate once we stepped inside. One of our favorite exterior features was the grand staircase leading up to the entrance, with each step engraved with the name of a U.S. state in the order it joined the Union. It’s a small but very cool detail that connects the Capitol to the broader story of the country. Another standout feature on the grounds is the gravesite of Huey P. Long. He’s actually buried upright, facing the Capitol building—a bold and fascinating tribute. I won’t spoil the details here, because it’s much better to learn more about his story for yourself, either by doing a little reading or, even better, taking the official tour. Inside, the Capitol is absolutely stunning. The artwork, architecture, and numerous monuments and memorials throughout really help bring both the building and Louisiana’s complex history to life. If you can, definitely take the guided tour—ours was led by one of the best guides we’ve had on this whole Capitol bucket list quest. Whether you go the self-guided route or join the tour, this is a statehouse worth visiting. And don’t forget to take in the views from the observation deck at the top—they’re not to be missed!
Wanderfish — Google review
To say we enjoyed our visit to the Louisiana State Capitol is an understatement. This is one awesome building. The tallest of all the state capitols. The inside is impressive to see the House and Senate chambers. Then for FREE, you can take the elevator to the 28th floor observation deck. The view from there is remarkable. You can see for miles and miles. This marks my 24th in my quest to visit all 50.
Brian D — Google review
Amazing exterior and friendly visitor center. The first floor stood out, but the rest of the building didn’t quite live up to the start. The historic elevator ride to the top was the highlight.
Charlie P — Google review
This beautiful national monument is free of charge to also o the observation deck, is free . The car parking is too, which is truly nice. You need to take two lifts, one up to 24th and 24th to 27th. There is also a souvenir shop, visitors log book, and beautiful view of 36 degree view. It's fascinating and stunning observatory view of Louisiana.

The USS KIDD Veterans Museum, located along the Mississippi River in downtown Baton Rouge, is a historic World War II destroyer turned museum. Visitors can explore the ship's decks and inner workings to learn about its role in American naval history. The museum features exhibits on naval history, ship models, and memorials honoring fallen heroes. Named after Rear Admiral Isaac C.
Great place to learn a bit of American history and check out some models of ships used in wars throughout American history. The USS Kidd itself is currently in maintenance, but normally, you can take a tour of the ship. It’s supposed to be available for tours again sometime in 2025 (don't remember the exact date).
ShadyHazeGaming — Google review
This museum is very interesting. It features a display of scale model ships, a tribute to soldiers and officers, weapons, and a lot of history. The tour of the museum can be completed in about 45 minutes. Then you can continue your visit on the museum ship, the USS Kidd (DD-661), a Fletcher-class destroyer that was one of the first ships of the United States Navy. The tour inside the ship can take about an hour to an hour and a half, especially if you follow all the signs and take your time to observe the details. It’s an iconic place where you can take great photos, it’s not expensive, and best of all—pets are allowed in both locations.
Karla P — Google review
We enjoyed the USS Kidd Veterans Museum. This is an average sized, two-story museum with lots of displays. We found the Japanese aviator’s flight suit and the remains of the kamikaze plane to be very interesting. There are also a collection of naval uniforms and two fighter jets on display as well as a small gift shop.
Louis E — Google review
Excellent Museum to visit for the whole family. The museum itself has so much to see, but the actual battleship is a sight to behold. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the entire ship from top to bottom. Honestly you could take a few days to just read all of the info all around the ship. Make sure you were pants and sneakers since there will be a lot of walking in tight quarters. The gift shop also has a lot of cool souvenirs that you will enjoy later. Highly recommend this for families.
Sam K — Google review
Small museum, but packed with memorabilia and a lot of information. First off, since the ship was being dry-docked for repairs, there was a discounted price. Second, all the information in all of the cases and next to the pictures is very informative. One thing I did find confusing was is the pirate exhibit, whose name is the same, Kidd, is that a relative of the ome who had the ship(s) named after him? I understand there is a lineage, given that his wife, after his death wanted the pirate flag flown on the ship. Other than that, it's a cute little place packed with information.

Great stop when traveling through Baton Rouge! The staff was so friendly and super helpful. The museum is perfect for any US Military, naval and maritime history buff. The Large model ships were a huge hit with my kiddos. The destroyer was great and my kids just loved exploring it. Beautiful views of the Mississippi. The grounds were very well kept. Fantastic historical experience.
Manda B — Google review
Really cool! Definitely worth you time and my kids are enjoyed it too. You get to walk through the boat and and go up and down and explore. Sitting on the Mississippi River there are amazing views of the river and some bridges. Lots of history here!

This was such a cool place to visit. After walking through the museum, you can walk through the ship on a self-guided tour. Very neat to see in person and totally worth visiting!

Louisiana's Old State Capitol is a unique museum dedicated to the state's political history. This former statehouse, designed in a Gothic Revival style by architect James Harrison Dakin, resembles a medieval fortress with its towers and stained-glass windows. Although it ceased official government functions in 1932, it now welcomes visitors to explore exhibits such as the multimedia presentation on the ghost of Sarah Morgan, a Civil War-era figure.
The architecture of this building was amazing! They had a movie that is a must-see. It really gave you the history. It's only $2, so it's worth it. They have a room that gives the chronologic dates of the state capital. Very informative! They even have the Merci Train car from France out front. That has its own historical significance. Definitely make this a place to visit.
Traveling N — Google review
We absolutely loved our visit to Louisiana’s Old State Capitol! The building is an architectural masterpiece—every inch packed with incredible craftsmanship and attention to detail. The stained glass dome is truly over the top in the best way, casting colorful light across the ornate interior. We were blown away by the intricate woodwork throughout the space, and even the engraved door hinges stood out as tiny works of art. Some of our favorite features included the grand spiral staircase, the unique exterior pocket doors, and the thoughtfully curated exhibits. Highlights for us were the Hall of Presidents, the beautifully preserved 1861 hand-stitched Confederate “First National Flag,” and the delicate 1850 embroidery on display. It’s not just a building—it’s an experience that celebrates history, design, and storytelling. A must-see if you're in Baton Rouge!
Wanderfish — Google review
Beautifully kept up, so much rich history in this building. I loves that you are able to do a self guided tour and take your time with each exhibit. There were two rooms, however, that seemed like they didn't belong there - the one with children's coloring over the walls was just not really fitting, but I understand why it's there - as an activity for kids to do...and the other with random wedding photos on the walls - my understanding is that they are displaying the wedding that have happened there? I honestly wished that it was opened on Sundays because I wanted to go back to the gift shop and purchased something - as they don't sell any of that stuff online.
Gair B — Google review
We had the BEST time here. Our young kids loved all the children’s areas. The exhibits were so well done and the staff was helpful. Great gift shop as well. It is free and a great use of time!
Kristin M — Google review
We had the pleasure of attending/participating in a lovely wedding. The staff was exceptionally helpful and accommodating. It would be wonderful if the groomsmen's waiting area could be more comfortable, and if there were restrooms available upstairs, rather than only on the first floor.
Felicia C — Google review
This was an awesome site. If you are into architecture at all, you'll love taking a tour through this place. The staircase and the atrium ceiling were stunning. We got there late, so we had to kinda skip through it, but feel we got to take most of it in and enjoy it.

So cool, Very small definitely see why they need a new capital. The wood work inside is gothic but very large.. hard to describe Great that it's free!

Nestled just south of the museum, BREC's Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center is a haven for nature enthusiasts. This expansive facility was established in 1997 to preserve the sprawling swamp and now features live animal exhibits, mineral displays, and photo exhibits showcasing the park's diverse flora and fauna. Visitors can explore scenic swamps, wetlands, and forests teeming with wildlife such as alligators, armadillos, otters, snakes, turtles, and more.
This is a great area to go for a walk. We enjoyed it and may only complain that they didn’t have longer trails. A great shady walk in the swamp. So many species of birds! We saw turtles, rabbits, squirrels and then in the nature center saw snakes and so on. There was a nice picnic pavilion and benches along the walk ways. There is a little gift shop and clean restrooms.
Beth R — Google review
I truly enjoyed my nature walk and seeing the animals inside the museum. It’s good to know the only animals roaming around are squirrels, birds, lizards and rabbits that I saw in my walk. It was very peaceful
Tonya C — Google review
Nice trails, very well maintained and spacious. When you park, walk down the trail that has a sign that says conservation area. You will follow a board walk to the building and that’s where the admission fee can be taken care of. It’s 3 bucks for adults. And they have a few reptiles in there. They also have bird feeders and nest boxes set up near or right across from benches for photographers. I liked that a lot. Great place to take your family for a hike. I prefer more secluded off the beaten path hikes myself, but I’d come back here.
Sevenn M — Google review
It is a beautiful place to walk and relax with the birds singing and if you are lucky you can see some other animals that live there 😍 you can feed the turtles and they have a visitor center where you can admire some snakes, I loved this place.
Evolet M — Google review
I had a great time connecting back to nature here. The scenery was very beautiful and clean. It was peaceful and its always a pleasure to hear the sounds of nature.
Elietta M — Google review
We did the $5 tour as a homeschool field trip. Definitely worth the money. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable and the grounds are beautiful
Clair B — Google review
BREC believes they can close a swamp, lol! WRONG! You can't close outside! That's just silly! Closing it would make it then become "inside" simultaneously making it no longer "outside" and the attempt would only prove to be successful erasing the part of outside from existence. But enough of all that, look at my stick bug friend and his spider buddy!
Colin ( — Google review
Nice family nature walk through the swamp. Was nice to see the wildlife inside the centre.. got to see a baby alligator and a cotton mouth snake. While walking around the swamp we only got glimpse of rabbits and squirrels. Maybe it was the time of year but we will definitely be back and visit again next time we come to Louisiana

Louisiana Art & Science Museum (LASM) is a museum complex that offers a diverse range of experiences for visitors. The museum features kids' science exhibits, a planetarium, and galleries showcasing the history of art. One of its highlights is the new interactive gallery called The Seed, which provides hands-on activities for children. Additionally, the Pennington Planetarium offers various shows throughout the day, including '3-2-1 Liftoff!' and 'Supermassive Black Holes.'
SO COOL!!!! They had plenty of Egyptian artifacts to look at and learn about. They had an interactive science area with crafts and activities. The Planetarium area had an amazing movie section where yey screen different educational films
Katherine C — Google review
We decided to give this a shot since entry was free for veterans. We were pleasantly surprised. We got to watch a planetarium show on mummies and my kids (5&10) were enthralled with the mummy exhibit and my youngest cannot stop talking about how she got to see a “real life mummy”. We also really enjoyed the kids play area and are now on the hunt for a magnetic marble run wall like they had. I had to peel my son away from it when it was time to go.
Lauralee E — Google review
I had such an incredible time at the art and science museum! 🧪🎨 There was so much to see and learn, I could have spent all day there. 🤩 It's definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. The museum offered so many interactive displays, making it a fun and engaging experience for all ages. Just a heads up, parking is easy to find on the street, but it is metered. Don't forget to pay!
Alfredo O — Google review
I was surprised by how nice the museum was. The number of ancient Egyptian artifacts was stunning and there is even an actual mummy on display. Furthermore, the movie about Egyptian burial practices was both entertaining and informative. We loved it!
George O — Google review
Really cool museum! We brought our 13 month old and one month old and it definitely helped with beating the Louisiana heat! There’s a planetarium that has short movies on the hour. We watched one about space and another about mummies. Both of which were engaging for not only the adults but even our 13 month old was intrigued. Military/Veterans/Fiest responders & family can enjoy for free which is a big plus in my book!
Matt — Google review
We got to explore this museum on the first Sunday of the month and it was Marvelous. I do recommend to get there early to get free parking and it wouldn't be full. Around 3 in the afternoon it got super full but we finished everything around 2-3 hours and we got to see the planetarium shows. The service was perfect, they welcomed us in and were super patient with our questions and they listened.
Yelile T — Google review
We had a great time here with the whole family. My little one LOVED the Sesame Street planetarium show and everyone loved the children’s section. We are looking forward to visiting again when the renovations are done. And I hope the museum will figure out a way to make ticket prices accessible to all!
Rachel S — Google review
Was looking to kill a little time and hoping to learn more about the city and it's historical past. The museum is a converted train station right on the river. I asked the staff at the check in desk for their recommendation on the best way to see the museum and any must sees and they basically just shrugged their shoulders and could not have been less interested in my questions. They handed me a map which did not detail what any of the exhibits were aside from the Egypt one, but was literally just a map of the building; not much help at all. I wandered around and enjoyed the exhibits but there didn't really seem to be any rhyme or reason for what was in each room; there was no cohesion. The planetarium offered a show each hour and while I didn't have an opportunity to take a show in, the attendant at the entrance of the planetarium was very informative and enthusiastic! Next time I will definitely partake. Overall, not a bad value for $15, especially if you're looking to kill a little bit of time (like I was 😉).

The LSU Rural Life Museum is a dedicated institution that preserves and showcases the material culture of 18th and 19th-century rural Louisiana. Situated on the Burden Plantation, it features over 30 historic buildings across four sections, offering a fascinating look at pre-industrial Louisiana. Visitors can explore artifacts, exhibits, and farming equipment while learning about the rich history and heritage of the region from friendly docents.
This is absolutely a must-see Museum and grounds for anyone interested in history. Large indoor space displaying an enormous amount of items regarding rural life in Louisiana. Many large displays of carriages and hearses. The outer grounds are acres Aurora buildings barns outhouses homes that were brought onto this museum's property to display a real life example of what rural life living was like. As a senior, the entry fee was $11. Worth every penny. Unfortunately, a simple map layout is all you are given, some sort of guided tour pamphlet or if we wanted to hit the ball out of the park, an audio tour for the areas that you go through. There is no reason that these items should not be available in a museum of this stature.
John M — Google review
Such a fun, chill experience for the family. So much history and culture explained. I would give it 5 stars but many of the structures were locked; I’d have loved to have been able to go in them and look around!
Lauren H — Google review
20/10. 100% recommend. And please at least you need 2 to 3 hrs if you want to see all the amazing things they have. Basically, it's a small fee to get there. But worthed
Denise P — Google review
This is an amazing museum with the best collection of architecture and artifacts from Louisiana that I’ve ever seen. We used the pre-recorded walking tour, which was excellent and we learned a lot of history of the area and what life was like for people over the centuries. The section on both slavery and slaveowners in the museum was thoughtful, respectful and honest, clearly representing what it was like to live in this area at the time. The museum’s commitment to preserving the past is commendable and a great example to others. I was very impressed and would recommend this to anyone interested in the history of Louisiana.

Great place to visit. Plan on 2 to 3 hours depending on how much time you take to view everything and information you want to absorb. 4 stars 🌟 because some of the structures did not have much information about the structure. Also it would have been nice if there were labels as to what items and artifacts were and used for that they used inside of the dwellings and around the dwellings. They have a variety of plows , tools, housewares etc that it would have been nice for a label and what each item was used for. Also would have been nice to see these items restored and preserved so the rust doesnt further deteriorate the items. The gift shop is nice and has quite a selection of items. Overall I could see myself wanting to visit again as I found it very interesting and enjoyable.

Capitol Park Museum, located in downtown Baton Rouge, is a state museum that delves into the history, industry, and culture of Louisiana. As part of the Louisiana State Museum system, it offers a wide range of exhibits that go beyond fine art to explore various aspects of Louisiana's rich heritage. Visitors can learn about the origins of famous locals like Louis Armstrong and the traditions surrounding festivals like Mardi Gras.
We just had our daughter's wedding ceremony and reception last Saturday at the museum. What an amazing venue! It was beautiful, both outside and inside. The director, Kelly Lee, was so easy to work with. I would recommend this venue for any of your social needs.

A Cool Break and a Thoughtfully Curated Experience This museum was the perfect size for escaping the heat and humidity for one to two hours while picking up some fascinating history along the way. The layout is intuitive and flows effortlessly from one era, region, and topic to the next. Each exhibit offers just the right amount of information—enough to inform and spark curiosity without overwhelming you with walls of text. The variety of displays ensures there’s something to capture everyone’s interest, from artifacts and multimedia to interactive elements. We were especially drawn to the 1812 eighteen-star flag, the mysterious submarine recovered from Lake Pontchartrain in 1878, the impressive 1877 American Eagle stern carving, Louis Armstrong’s bugle, and the stunning Mardi Gras costume displays. Well worth the price of admission and a great way to spend a couple of hours in Baton Rouge!

Excellent facility, parking is easy, well maintained and beautiful structure and grounds. The permanent Louisiana exhibit is really extensive and well done. We actually went to see the Billy Cannon exhibit and it was a superb experience showcasing his historical rise to fame and positive impact for the state. The staff are very helpful and informed. The gift shop is worth a visit as well. Afterwords it is an easy walk to the Capital and Huey Long’s monument. It’s worth a visit.

Wife and I were in Gonzales for a wedding and decided to spend the morning in Baton Rouge. After checking out the different museums on maps, we decided on the Capitol Park museum, and boy, was it a good choice. We had a great time checking out the exhibits and reading about the history and people of Louisiana. Other reviewers say it is only good for an hour but we spent nearly 3 and still had to rush through some of the exhibits upstairs in order to make the wedding on time.
Steven C — Google review
It was nice to see the Louisiana history. Which was on the 1st and 3rd floor. There was no wait, but that's probably because everybody was at the book festival.
Mr J — Google review
Super nice museum. Interactive, well organized, many videos, nice decor, on two floors. Really impressed by the quality of the exhibits but really disappointed with the absence of French, including in sections on Acadie, Cajuns and Creoles. There is even a survey about French context…which was weird because there is none. We are fully bilingual so not an issue but how can you pretend to be inclusive and respectful for the Acadian culture, and Cajuns and Creoles when everything is in English (also in light of the fact that French was banned from school). A few symbolic signs would have helped a lot. But it is a great museum and it was free on the day we visited.

Tiger Stadium, also known as "Death Valley," is a 92,500-capacity outdoor stadium and the home field for the LSU Tigers football team. Since its opening in 1924, it has been a hub of passionate football fans and intense college football games. The stadium has undergone numerous renovations and expansions, now accommodating up to 102,321 spectators. It is not only a venue for sporting events but also hosts special events throughout the year.
A fair amount of ladies' bathrooms and decent concessions. Great game day atmosphere. The scoreboard are great and bright. Good sound system although would like to be able to hear the halftime show s bit better.

Unbelievably, even though we were in full Florida Gator gear, the LSU fans couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating. We arrived with a Gator Alumni Bus, and while setting up our tailgate area, LSU fans welcomed us and shared food and drinks. They were genuinely interested in where we were from, even though we were rooting for the visiting team. This wasn't just the group of LSU fans parked near us; no matter where we roamed, we were greeted and welcomed by so many LSU Tiger fans. It was a truly heartwarming experience. The stadium is huge, and we were seated on the sunny side, so it could get very warm until the sun sets. One heads-up: expect a lot of traffic and difficult parking. That's why we paid to ride the Alumni Bus.

Tiger Stadium was a blast! As a lifelong college football fan, Tiger Stadium was #1 on my bucket list of stadiums to visit, and it did not disappoint! The stadium was loud, energetic, and unlike any other stadium atmosphere I’ve ever experienced. I really enjoyed LSU’s pregame traditions, and I LOVED the music that they played before and during the game. The concourses were a little rough around the edges, and the food choices were a little uninspiring. However, you can just as easily chalk that up to tradition triumphing over corporatism. All-in-all, Tiger Stadium was everything that I thought it would be, and I’m so happy that I got to cross it off my bucket list!

An unbelievable and unforgettable experience!!!! Went to see LSU vs Texas A&M football and it was incredible. The stadium is modern, clean and full of amenities. The security staff were kind and thorough, the staff were very friendly and helpful, parking was plentiful. The stadium has many restrooms, food stands and drinks stations . Every seat is premium. The Club Lounge met and exceeded all of my expectations. An absolutely unforgettable night. Geaux Tigers 🐅

Zoo
Zoos & Aquariums
BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo, established in 1970, is a popular destination for families and animal enthusiasts. The zoo houses over 2,000 animals, birds, and reptiles from around the world. Visitors can explore a wide range of exhibits and enclosures featuring fierce tigers, gentle giraffes, alligators, rhinos, jaguars, big cats, rhinos, fish, otters and more. The zoo offers playgrounds and picnic spots for relaxation.
While the summer might change this, it was so peaceful walking around. Not a lot of people, plenty of leisurely pacing and space. So cool to see (and hear!) the peacocks and peahens. The giraffe is finally out and about. Unfortunately the Flamingo Cafe water fountains weren't working, but we brought our own so plan ahead if you want free water. Otherwise it's a little costly ($4 a bottle.) Also, the playground has a roped off section. Hopefully they are able to fix that area. The family membership is paid by just 3 visits for us (2 adults, three kids) so if you plan on going, get the membership! Also, there are park perks if you go often enough. It's a small zoo, but worth it just for the nature and getting out of the house. The hippos (Spencer and Ginger) were my kids' favorite.

Fantastic zoo!! Traveling from Texas and been to our fair share of zoos. This is amazing, their enclosures for the animals are outstanding. I love all the scenery and the staff was very kind! Highly recommend a visit!
Diamond K — Google review
I love how they have certain animals such as peacocks, and armadillos just free roaming, I've never seen that at a zoo. They also have a rare rabbit I've never seen, I was hoping to see a full grown alligator, which is an icon of Louisiana. But that's okay because I feel like the tiger exhibit overshadowed the missing alligator. The way they have it set up, it's the next best thing of being up and close and personal with a tiger.
Chris A — Google review
The zoo was nice and the walkways were pretty clean. The landscaping in the parking lot and around the zoo definitely needs some attention. They had overgrown grass all over the parking lot and attractions. Overall we had a good experience
Nicholas C — Google review
It was very nice although more animals are needed for viewing. The food was typical of ball park concessions, but it was good. The gift shop was poor, mostly trinkets and junk. No variety of hats, shirts, and coffee cups with actual park animals. As far as the "natural habitat" for the parking lot is concerned, it is terrible... whoever designed it needs to reevaluate their decision. It looks unkempt and ugly.
Joseph B — Google review
My 3 year old went wild with excitement running from animal to animal. It was a lot of fun. The animal variety wasn't extraordinary, but not every zoo can budget being the Audubon or San Diego zoo. Definitely a fun outing for children.

Step back in time and immerse yourself in the rich history of southern Louisiana at Magnolia Mound. This 1700s plantation home showcases restored French Creole architecture and offers guided tours by costumed interpreters. The site is a rare example of vernacular architecture influenced by early French and West Indian settlers, making it a vital part of the community.
If you want to know about history, this is a good place. The tour is super detailed. Loved 100%recommend

Interesting museum from the Plantation Era. It is conveniently located, though the entrance is a little tricky to see from Nicholson Drive. The property is attractive and the buildings well maintained. We had a couple of staff members cover the tour, and both were excellent. The main house is relatively modestly sized. The decor is from the period, but not necessarily from this family. They did a good job of covering the perspective of the enslaved people.

This is one of the best plantations in Baton Rouge as it’s big trees, and spacious houses are a true historical landmark in the city of Baton Rouge. I came here for free on the first Sunday of the month, most of the time they have tours that cost money but it’s an overall good experience. If you like history and big houses this is the place for you.

My boyfriend and I had a fantastic experience! The tour guide was amazing and gave us so much detail while still making it enjoyable and fun! It was not busy so we got a personal one on one with our tour guide! The gift shop was also great! I’ve been going to college here for 5 years and never even knew this place excited! It’s definitely worth checking out by yourself or with friends and family! ** Please note that there is a difference between self guided and tour guided!! You can’t enter the home without a tour guide! We chose to go with a tour guide. **

David W — Google review
I did the self guided tour for the kids & I. It was five dollars per person, you got a map that had markers that showed where everything on the grounds were located. The lady in the gift shop was very welcoming & also gave me some suggestions on other things to do since I told her I wasn't from around here. It's always interesting to me to see our history & to drop a little unknown knowledge on the kids. If you're in the area stop by no reservations needed. Guided tours are every 45 minutes, I believe that's what was stated.
Mendel J — Google review
We visited Magnolia Mound Plantation on a weekend in June, 2023. We decided to take a guided took, because we feel you get so much more out of it. Although we had to wait a bit since they only do the tours on the hour. So we walked around a bit before an took some pictures. Then we gathered with others to take the tour or the house and kitchen. It lasted an hour and was informative. We were able to get an insight into life back then. The tour told us and showed us things we would have missed if we went it alone. We could ask questions and such. I felt it was a good time spent. I would recommend visiting, but definitely take the guided tour. The visitors center has a nice gift shop with actual decent items. The have rest rooms and a model display of the plantation back in the day. The price ran between $9-12 per adult. So it wasn't overly expensive either. And they give you a nice little fan with the map of the plantation on it. So you can stay cool and have a map all in one item. Then take it with you for use later. Such a deal:)
Sponge B — Google review
The place has a great atmosphere. It's a pity that you can't enter the house without a guide. We declined it because our English proficiency is weak. The entrance fee is symbolic, but there aren't many exhibits. The main highlight is the owners' house, which has restricted access

The Old Governor's Mansion, often called Louisiana's White House, is a replica of the actual White House in Washington, D.C. Constructed in 1930 during Governor Long's tenure, it served as the official residence for nine Louisiana governors until 1963. The mansion reopened to the public in 1999 after extensive restoration and showcases furnishings and artifacts from former governors.
This place is both fascinating and gorgeous. It has quite a history that's worth looking up. Every room is as different, colourful and full of character as the characters who inhabited the mansion over the years, including the man who wrote You are My Sunshine. The architecture makes full use of light and interesting spaces including curved walls and the most beautiful living room. I'm not sure it's called a living room, but the large second floor room with the white furniture and red tiles is stunning. And the bathrooms (some of which are being renovated) are really something else!

Very good job of hitting all the historic points of the Old Governor's Mansion. It's a shame that Governor Huey went to prison for knocking down the old one that was originally on this site. The admission is free and you just walk up to the front door and walk right in like you were invited by the governor! The staff will even take you on a short tour not sure if that's every day as we went on a really bad weather day so not many people dropped by. We'll worth the stop though!

Grandson had a great time. They have very good interactive exhibits. Employees were visible, knowledgeable and friendly. The backyard area needs as much attention as the inside. There was really no reason to go outside. He loved the excavator, dance studio, pumping gas and driving and putting washer fluid in the engine. He had a blast and so did I. On the way out I purchased some binoculars and they were noticeably cheaply made especially for the $16 price tag.

Pastime Restaurant is a long-standing eatery and bar in Baton Rouge, known for its casual atmosphere and delicious food. Established in 1945, it has become a local tradition and even holds historical significance as a landmark. Originally starting as a grocery store in the 1920s, it evolved into a restaurant and cocktail lounge that became popular among LSU students.
There is a place in Baton Rouge—down near the river, Where the past of LSU linger in the damp Louisiana air—where the beer is cold, the neon hums like a hornet’s nest, and the pizza is pure, ungovernable delishiousness. The Pastime—nostalgic in name, but built on something rawer. Here, hunger meets grease, cheese, and heat, no pretense required. Born in the 1920s as a humble grocery, it fed laborers craving hot, fast, and cheap. By 1945, booze arrived, and The Pastime thrived just beyond LSU’s Prohibition zone, drawing students and faculty alike. The law changed, but the legend endured. Pizza is not an afterthought here. It is the thought. Forget the thick, doughy, over-hyped monstrosities you get in tourist traps. The Pastime’s pizza is thin, crispy, and cooked like they mean it—a no-nonsense testament to the beauty of excess, built for survival rather than spectacle. Take the Creole Pizza here, for example. A creation so inherently Southern it could win a parish election on name recognition alone. Their homemade spicy red sauce is a warning shot—bold, unapologetic, and perfectly paired with a reckless heap of Gulf shrimp, fresh-cut red onions, okra, homegrown diced tomatoes, and a righteous blend of cheeses. And yet, you do it anyway. Because when that first bite hits—when the shrimp, the sauce, the cheese, and the crunch of that perfect crust collide in a symphony of excess—you remember why places like this exist. The Pastime is an equal-opportunity enabler. It doesn’t give a damn if you’re a broke college kid, a washed-up gambler, or a Hollywood A-lister slumming it in the Deep South. Angelina Jolie, Billy Bob Thornton, Matthew McConaughey—hell, even Willie Nelson has pulled up a chair here. LSU legends, from Billy Cannon to Simone Augustus, have eaten here. Every Louisiana politician worth their salt—Edwin Edwards, Buddy Roemer, a long line of sheriffs, judges, and senators—has sat in these booths, elbow-deep in marinara, making backroom deals over thin crust and cold beer. Because this is where it happens. The kind of place where fortunes change, where ideas are born, where decisions are made in the hazy euphoria of one too many slices and the promise of another round. There’s no Michelin star here. No farm-to-table nonsense, No gimmicks, no branding nonsense—just The Pastime, standing for nearly a century because people keep coming back. Not just for nostalgia, but for the food, the stories, and the comfort of things that never change. If you’re in Baton Rouge, order the pizza. Extra napkins. Cold beer. No regrets. And when you wake up the next morning—groggy, stuffed, and wondering if it was a dream—you’ll know it wasn’t. The Pastime isn’t just a restaurant. It’s an LSU institution.

You walk up and write your order down. I like that. You pay when your order is done. They were very busy Halloween weekend and with 13 gates across the street, but the food was still fast. We got calzone and burger. The calzone was average. The burger was really good.

Very old college hangout. Very historic feeling with lots of LSU sports memorabilia and photos on the walls. We had a great time eating some great pizza and watching college football!

Place has been around for years, food has declined over the years but there are still a few standouts. Steak and Cheese Sandwhich is good, Cheeseburger never disappoints, and the Calzones are still tasty. Seems like they improved lighting in the dining area and updated the tables and chairs recently. Lots of LSU memorabilia if you're a sports fan. Not what it once was but still worth stopping in if you're hungry.

We stopped here driving through Louisiana and we loved it! Customer service was the best we have received in a long time. Very personable and inviting. The food was just as good too. I ordered a custom pizza and the thin crust was incredible. Would definitely recommend visiting.

My dad, brother, and I use to always come here when we would go to Baton Rouge for LSU games. My brother and I have continued that tradition so this is a very nostalgic place for me. Been a fan of the boudin pizza for over 10+ years.
Jacob C — Google review
We didn't like it here, icky sticky amenities. Some toppings were missing from our pizza and the ones that were in there weren't homogenously spread out, i.e. one slice would be full of olives and the other would be full of banana peppers. I liked the texture of the crust and the tanginess of the sauce. The cheese was texturally unpleasant goop for just coming out of the oven. This establishment could pay more attention to the condition of the non-alcoholic drink station and women's restrooms for instance.

St. Joseph Cathedral, located in downtown Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is one of the city's oldest churches with a history dating back to the 1790s. The exterior of the cathedral boasts traditional symmetrical architecture, while its interior features modern furnishings from a 20th-century renovation, including arched stained-glass windows and a raftered ceiling.
This is a great church. The parking was on the street and a private lot so if you're going to a packed mass get there early. I loved the architecture, stained glass, and stations of the cross. They are all beautifully done. The pews are comfortable and so are the kneelers.

Beautiful Catholic Church both inside and out. When I was there the pipe organist was practicing and sounded fantastic.
Dane — Google review
The windows here are stunning. While St. Joseph is scarcely mentioned in the Scriptures, the windows beautifully capture his important and powerful role in the Holy Family. Beyond highlighting his significance, the windows are impressive works of art. The scriptural citations for the windows really connect the dots if there is uncertainty as to what is depicted. I was particularly moved by the Coronation of Joseph, as I’ve never seen that image (or heard of this event) before. The verse at the bottom though, has it all make sense. The crucifix is off centered which was a little distracting for me, but I was so drawn to the windows so it wasn’t too difficult to pray.

They certainly did a great job with “wreckovating” this Church. Thank you Vatican Council II. Two stars only because the exterior of the Church managed to maintain its traditional beauty. Catholicism deserves better. Visited this Church on 01.26.2023 (From Florida).

This is listed as a museum on the Google Maps, the link to the website leads to itineraries through the National Park Service. The information signs state that the buildings were built in 1819 and could house 1000 troops. In the 1880s, it was given to Louisiana State University and used as dormitories. They are now registered on the Historic Landmarks and are used by the Louisiana State Government. The grounds are lovely, and the buildings are well maintained.

Magnolia Cemetery, established in 1820, is a haunting yet peaceful final resting place for many of Baton Rouge's prominent residents, including politicians. The cemetery witnessed intense fighting during the Battle of Baton Rouge but now offers a serene setting with soaring live oaks and a reflective atmosphere. It holds numerous burials from the city's Yellow Fever epidemic, with heartbreaking epigraphs adding to its historical significance.
This is a really pretty and peaceful place. Soaring live oaks on a former battleground. Lots of burials from the city's Yellow Fever epidemic. The epigraphs are heartbreaking.

We have always thought that Magnolia Cemetery is one of the prettiest in the city. This was once referred to locally as the protestant cemetery but people of all faiths have been buried here along with many makers and shakers of the city. Historically this is also the site of the battle of Baton Rouge. Many Union troops that died here were interred across the street at what is now the National Cemetery.

Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5) Mall of America is one of the last remaining indoor malls in our area, and it truly stands out. It’s absolutely beautiful—multi-level, well-designed, and impressively clean throughout. The stores officially open at 11 AM, but you’ll notice plenty of people walking the halls earlier in the day to get some exercise, which adds a nice community feel. There are tons of popular stores to choose from, offering everything from fashion and electronics to unique specialty shops. It’s easy to spend an entire day exploring. The food court is another highlight—there’s a wide variety of amazing dining options to satisfy any craving, whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or sitting down for a full meal. Overall, it’s more than just a mall—it’s a destination. Perfect for shopping, dining, or simply walking around and enjoying the atmosphere

Lynsey C — Google review
As I respond to the owner, I must state: honesty is what I live by. Making false claims is not who I am, and those who know me will trust this review. Reviews exist to help consumers make informed decisions. First, the owner never mentioned that the material on my custom ring would fade over time. It faded in just one month. Now, he claims otherwise, but that is simply not true. Second, he did not replace the material even once. We declined his offer to redo the same poor-quality work because we didn’t want to go through the same problem again. He even gave us his word that when the finish came off, he’d replace it — but who spends over $4,000 only to keep running back for repairs? Third, a local jeweler inspected the ring and confirmed the work was faulty. He stated that he has never used that material and would never recommend it. Fourth, the owner claims he sold us a $5,500 ring for $4,000. We had it appraised — it’s worth exactly $4,000. If you are selling that ring for $5,500, you are overcharging customers. Yes, he gave us a loaner, but only because the ring he promised wasn’t ready — not once, but twice. Both promised timelines were broken. That is why we received a loaner. Yes, I returned the certificate for the loaner — why would I keep a 10k certificate when my ring is 14k? Speaking of certificates, after making our final payment, the owner promised to mail ours. A month later, we still have not received it. Because of his lack of professionalism, integrity, and honesty, we went to a local jeweler who appraised the ring, provided a reputable certificate, and applied a plating that shines — and will not come off like the one from The Jewelry Fix. My rating: -1. My advice: Do your research before spending your hard-earned money at The Jewelry Fix.

My daughter's wedding and reception was on the 4th Floor, River Terrace and it was amazing. The venue assigned a person (how I wish I could remember her name), and she was fantastic. My daughter's needs were met in lightning speed, they definitely know what they are doing. The bridal suite area was perfect for our needs. The seating outside was fantastic and well thought out, as everyone wanted to come see the bride and the suite quickly got a little crowded! The venue itself was fantastic. A quick, strong, rain storm came through, and they were so fast to take matters under control, the reception didn't even miss a beat! A huge thank you to everyone at the venue for making my daughter's night magical!

I would so l easily give this place 5 Stars with one exception. In the Manship Theater there a handful of bad seats. 99% of the rest are great! With the exception of those extremely few bad seats. You can see and hear the performances from various angles and you will not be disappointed. I accept responsibility for the seat I selected, because other seats were available at the time. I chose a place in the balcony, furthest toward the end, closest to the stage. Thinking this would put me at a place where I could watch the performance from a great angle. Unfortunately. There are stage lights that block 1/2 to 2/3rds of the view from that spot. If it weren’t for the stage lights at that particular location, the view would be fantastic. Again, it was my choice. Next time, I’ll simply avoid one any those seats next time. There’s only 4 such seats in the arena. So again, all the rest are great. I’ve been to previous shows there and have been greatly satisfied with the seating. My advice to the Manship Theater is to either remove those 4 seats and just have an open space there. Or perhaps rearrange the stage lights in such a way as to not block the view to the stage from that particular location. With that said. The atmosphere, service, access to seating, staff, bartenders, cleanliness and of course the quality of the shows there are 5 Star all year long. There’s plenty of parking right next door. The facility is also conveniently located near restaurants, shops, lounges as well as the eternally scenic Mississippi River. It’s also directly across from the Watermark Hotel. And nearby other 5 star Hotels. My personal favorite is the Watermark. One of the very best hotels in the South.

A great place to understand the history of Louisiana, slavery, agriculture and how this country is built on the shoulders of slaves. I cannot unsee what I saw in this museum. Make sure you have enough time to see everything and read the text. I appreciate the fact that despite this cruel history, they have a good and clear demonstration of the past. We got a house tour from a very knowledgeable guide. She walked through each room and its history and was checking with us to see if had any questions throughout. Took my great neice and nephew here for an outing after the end of their school year. They loved it. My dad took us when we were kids, continuing a long family tradition. Did you know that the LSU Museum of Natural Science has for research the largest collection of neo-tropical songbirds in the WORLD. Football gets so much attention. What about science and academic accomplishments? Let's celebrate the true meaning of LSU!!

Free Museum of Science with a large variety of taxidermied animals and information about local wildlife.

Wonderfully made exhibits with loads of great information. The museum was clean and well kept with lots of attention to details. The Mike The Tiger exhibit was also very cool and definitely worth the time to see it. It's not a very big museum, but for what it is, it's a great place to spend some time.

Fantastic displays of birds, reptiles and insects. A lot to see in such an intimate space. Mike the Tiger is also on display

A great church and welcoming community of all races, ethnicities, faiths, beliefs, and sexual orientations. If you believe everyone is inherently equal and should practice their own spirituality, you would love it. Music and sermons inspire and transform.
Jan D — Google review
Active community and very kind. A group of people who believe in hope and goodness for all no matter your creed.
Kitt K — Google review
LGBTQ Friendly atmosphere, the only church around here that is like this that I know of.
Ottilie Z — Google review
Good people working on transcending antiquated cultural lessons to be inclusive to all people. This Church doesn't have great rhythm haha but I have never met a member who has a negative vibe. Everyone seems to be seeking more and that which is beyond where they started. They believe that you are welcome despite what you consider your religion or beliefs. Community is non-invasive and I felt welcome to not participate, but observe. On the other hand they welcome generally several services to those who need help and counselling.
Johann S — Google review
Only UU church in Baton Rouge, extensive programming, vibrant congregation, beautiful building, long history.
Ryan L — Google review
I love this place. The majority of the people are open and caring. There is great music; and good food, often separated by vegan, keto, gluten free or other special needs. Children's Religious Education is geared towards understanding the values of the Unitarian Universalist Association, including reviewing many truths, beliefs, stories and practices of the Judeo-Christian mores that informed the creation of our faith; as well as Buddhism, Islam, Confuscionism, and others. There's no Sunday School for adults, but there's more than a dozen adult activities from Low Impact Yoga to Lunch Bunch. Downsides I've observed: To my knowledge, there are no programs for homebound members. The church's only permanent picture of an individual is not a religious figure, but that of Yoshi Hatori, a Japanese exchange student shot and killed by accident thirty years ago. Lack of respect for activities and contributions other than in-person Sunday morning attendance.
Kayla S — Google review
Intellectually stimulating but spiritually disappointing. c Congregation is still stuck in the 60s. Its' view of racial history ends with the King Assassination.(A lot has happened since 1968, y'all. ) I was a member for 5 years. UU wasn't really there for me when I was in crisis.

The Museum Of Public Art, also known as Cinq Ombres, is a vibrant mural located on Florida Boulevard downtown. Created in 2012 by local artists Saliha Staib and Clark Derbes, the project was funded through a successful Kickstarter campaign. The colorful grid of squares and parallelograms has attracted attention from art enthusiasts and passersby alike. Visitors have expressed awe at the attention to detail and the mesmerizing outdoor and indoor works of art.
I love seeing graffiti as art. In reality, isn't it all art? Art is so difficult to define. One building I stopped by seemed to be just walls and no roof or anything inside. Such attention to detail! This is amazing. Whoever is behind this is a freaking genius. Take a moment. Look around. Think about the time and effort others have put into this.
Andrea F — Google review
This place is a National Treasure, I hope the owner of the building can protect and pay someone local to keep it open and cared for. From what we were able to find out, the space is in danger of being forgotten. We had the honor and pleasure of meeting Mr. “Diesel” McGee and visiting this amazing place. Special thanks to Mr. Kevin Harris for assisting! Even if you can’t get inside, the murals on the outside, theater across the street, and murals on some other buildings in this neighborhood are well worth the visit. Love!!!!
Catrina F — Google review
See it while you still can. Exterior paint is fading fast. Can't see the interior at all. "Baton Rouge" mural very faded and some of the window coverings have been forcibly removed. Still worth a look as it has some of the best work in town.

No cost street art there isn't very much but the art is absolutely amazing
Zach Z — Google review
I literally stumbled across this amazing space on a Sunday morning while looking for something else. What a trip! I stepped through the hole in the door, almost certain I was trespassing...but I couldn't help myself! The works outside and in were simply too mesmerizing. I had no idea this was actually a place. So refreshing.
Skip R — Google review
It's open to the public because it's abandoned. And the doors are open to ev'rybody & anybody.

Honored to be let inside by Diesal McGee one sunny afternoon. Beautiful, shame it's closed.

Tourist information center
Visitor center
Baton Rouge, a city steeped in history and charm, boasts an impressive 202 years of rich heritage. Nestled along the banks of the Mississippi River, it emerged as a vital trade hub since the late 17th century when French explorers discovered its indigenous landmark known as the Red Stick.
We were visiting from out of town. We stopped in and was very happy we did. We spoke with Ms. Katherine and she gave us some must see places, like the observation deck in the state capital building, and great local places to eat. She also shared the interesting history of Baton Rouge “red stick” with us which was cool.

First visit to Baton Rouge and stopped at the visitor center for information. Fatima was very helpful and she advised of the trolley for a tour of the town, so at 1:00pm we waited at the designated spot where the trolley sign was located. At 1:17pm the trolley blew past us at cruising sped leaving us standing there wondering why it didn't even slow down ? . We waited until 1:45pm for another trolley which Fatima told us ran every 15 minutes. We gave up and just left downtown as the trolley service ends at 2:30pm (and only on weekdays) which is weird because most tourist's I would think are around on weekends and certainly after 2:30 pm during the week. What you sow so shall ye reap.

If you are not a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, this building might just be kind of nice looking. For Latter Day Saints, this is a very important building. Reach out to member or missionaries if you have questions! They will help! My wife and I look for every opportunity to go to this important place!

Beautiful. Just Beautiful. Peace is here. Love is here. God is here. Just walking around the temple and then sitting down and having the chance to pray was an incredible experience.
