Museo Casa Montejo is a beautifully restored 16th-century house that has been transformed into a museum, showcasing art exhibitions and hosting cultural events. Built in 1549 by the three Franciscos de Montejo, this stately home stands as the city's oldest and most exquisite example of colonial plateresque architecture. The intricate ornamentation of this Spanish architectural style can be admired throughout the museum.
Beautiful restored building. Elegantly displays the historical nature of the Spanish style. Take your time and enjoy! Be sure to see the evening light show (once a week).
Sherry W — Google review
Entry is free!! And surprisingly hardly any visitors. Guess people got used to paying entrance fee 😉 Nice, well maintained place. Security takes it’s job seriously 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Gee D — Google review
Museo Casa Montejo is a beautifully preserved slice of colonial history nestled in the heart of Mérida, Yucatán. Built in the 16th century by Spanish conquistador Francisco de Montejo, this mansion-turned-museum offers a rare glimpse into the opulence and architecture of the colonial era. The façade alone is worth the visit—ornately carved in the Plateresque style, it’s a stunning example of Spanish colonial artistry. Inside, the museum is divided into historical and cultural exhibits. The historical rooms are furnished with period pieces that recreate the lifestyle of wealthy colonial families, while the gallery spaces often feature rotating exhibitions of contemporary art.
Vello P — Google review
The museum is located in the city center of Merida and we can visit for free. It is a great place to spend the time to know about the history of the city.
Rita — Google review
Free to enter and worth the short visit. Lots of local artwork displayed in the gallery and even a short film in Spanish with English subtitles on the history of Merida. I found this interesting and worth the visit and time it took. Spend a little or a lot of time there is no rush.
Teakeyman — Google review
Very well kept and renovated with some of the original furniture. The rooms were air conditioned and the path well marked. Ask to view the mural, it pictures the hardship and reality of the indigenous people. Free admission.
Jose V — Google review
Former house of the city's governor, which had to be sold by the family after several generations and is now in possession of the Mexican National Bank. The villa was restored and is now available for public for free. Note the exhibition opens at 11am - before only the bank terminal housed inside is accessable.
Emanuel H — Google review
This is a good free museum to visit in Merida. It’s got some fantastic colonial furniture and a helpful video showcasing the history of the house. It’s now owned by a bank, which put the museum on show as a public service I assume. If you are in the main plaza check it out.

Very nice Avenue that you can either by walking or by bike. When we went (sunday), the one side of the street was reserved only for bicycle so it was super Nice

The Palacio de Gobierno del Estado de Yucatán, also known as the Government Palace, is a striking historical building located in the heart of Merida, Mexico. Constructed in 1892, it serves as the executive government offices for the state of Yucatan. The pastel green facade of this architectural gem stands out at the intersection of Calle 60 and 61.
This is a surprisingly great building with outstanding large format murals detailing the artist’s impression of the history of the Yucatan. We didn’t pay an entry fee, and so it’s a great free visit of a museum in Merida (there are a few). We visited with our family, and the kids (13 and 11), thought it was really interesting. Each of the murals also had descriptions discussing what they were about in Spanish, and English. Recommend this place.
Nathan G — Google review
We had a great time during our visit here. It was a historical building in the city center of Merida where we could see murals, artworks, and museum. It was a free entry during my visit. In October, the city is preparing for a carnival. We could see many beautiful decorations inside the city. We managed to see local performances in the other part of the street.
Rita — Google review
Very large artworks depicting historical events, Mayan traditions and folklore ,displayed on two floors. Our Tour Leader took the 3 of us in for a brief viewing. For someone really interested in art ,longer than a brief view essential. Free to enter. Guards at main doors amenable .
Musicians M — Google review
Beautiful museum with incredible artworks. I loved the green colour of the buildings and the lighting throughout the museum was stunning. It’s in a great location and definitely a must see spot when you’re visiting Merida.
Hope O — Google review
This is an exquisite and well maintained palace of the governor. The entry is free and is well guarded by police, however they allow people to view it. The palace has amazing paintings and murals which depict historic events and modern works from a famous Mexican artist.
Devansh — Google review
Merida is the capital of Yucatan state and the biggest city of the entire peninsula. This elegant green edifice is the area's government seat, standing on the main Plaza Grande square. In normal times you can enter it to admire great murals in the arched courtyard. They remind on Diego Rivera murals in Mexico city's City Hall, but here in Merida, Fernando Pacheco is responsible for them. Murals depict Spanish invasion of Yucatan and enslaving and destroying Mayan culture.
Dejan B — Google review
A beautiful building right around the corner from the Cathedral. The building is open to the public with no admission charge. Exceptional murals on the walls and especially in the expansive rooms on the second floor. The building is clean and very well cared for. Definitely worth a visit if you are in this area.
Milton G — Google review
An unexpectedly interesting place, full of huge beautiful murals depicting the struggles of the Maya people and the government establishment in the Yucatán. Definitely a great place for learning and appreciating art.

History Museums
The Museo Regional de Antropología, Palacio Cantón is housed in a magnificent mansion from the early 20th century, showcasing the Beaux Arts style popular in Europe and Mexico during that era. The museum features rotating exhibits that delve into the region's rich cultural heritage. Once the residence of General Francisco Canton, governor of Yucatan, this eclectic architectural masterpiece boasts intricate details such as multicolored marble and elegantly finished ceilings.
Amazing museum! They are renovating the place, so not everything is ready. It is free to enter, there is a fee to be payed if you want to make videos. Great information, also in English. Some fun things for kids too. The entrance is at the back at this moment.
MUSEUM H — Google review
There are a few interesting things to see inside of this very beautiful building, but the collection is quite small and really only the first floor is related to the Mayan culture. The second floor is family history of the house and rather boring. The QR codes for English take you to a broken link in the Google Drive. Staff were unfriendly, on their phones, or just plain sleeping. They won’t let you keep your bag with you or take water, despite the excessive heat. There are much better museums to explore in Cozumel and Valladolid. Overall, it took about an hour and mostly because there’s a lot of reading/translating large information posters.
Ciarra P — Google review
Amazing experience and very pretty building. There are QR codes that guests can scan for the English language option. Apparently, some displays are switched out from time to time, so you can see different artifacts and collections tickets are cheap, and if you have a resident card, they are even cheaper.
Shion “ — Google review
Overall - a good place to learn a little about the past and the present of the region. The way the English translation works is not the most convenient, but functional, I guess. The experience is short, yet fulfilling and the place itself is stunning!
Vlad — Google review
Loved exploring this musuem and learning about the history of Merida and the Yucatan area. The signs have QR codes that pull the English version of the description cards. Great way to spend 1-2 hours in air conditioned comfort.
Traveling P — Google review
Interesting museum currently they have a exhibit about the trade routes used by indigenous peoples and the part rivers and ocean ports played in these historic markets
Bryan H — Google review
Small museum, housed in a beautiful historic mansion on Paseo Montejo. It contains exhibits of Mayan ceramics and other artifacts and id owned by the State of Yucatan. Also, an exhibit about General Canton, the person who had the building constructed as his home, in the early 1900's along with the history of the building. English translations available on line with a QR code. There was one room photographic exhibit of the various religions in the Yucatan. Entry fee is a modest $100Mx.
Roger C — Google review
As others have said, there are little to no explanations in English or other languages so you're pretty much on your own. It's a great museum that's not too expensive, entrance fees are $95 pesos per person. There's no parking inside only on the street so you'll need to go around a few times to find a spot. Lots of really cool things to see in this museum and didn't really encounter the curmudgeon up front that many reviewers were talking about.

Biciruta Mérida is a popular weekly event where certain roads in the city are closed off to traffic, allowing cyclists to freely explore the area. This family-friendly biking activity takes place every Sunday morning and the first Saturday evening of every month. Participants can rent bikes for a reasonable price or use free solo bikes available at designated spots. The route passes by various neighborhoods and landmarks, including the striking Monumento a la Patria statue.
Enjoyed watching all the people on bikes! We have heard of this and want to do it. The bike route looks like a fun place to go!

Nothing like strolling down the street on a Sunday morning! You can bring your own wheels or rent bikes there! Me and my family go every Sunday! A must visit! You can sight see, shop , eat and exercise at the same time!
Adubb — Google review
We arrived early (0800 hours) and rented bikes for 25 pesos each [about $2.65 USD total] for an hour. Great ride, with streets closed, and monitors at every intersection. Lots of food to buy. It got crowded fast. All ages, including surreys. A great way to see the various neighborhoods and get a feel for the City.

Manjar Blanco is a charming spot located across from the Santa Ana park, offering traditional Yucatecan breakfast. Their breakfast packages include bottomless coffee, fresh-squeezed orange juice, a fruit bowl, and various main dishes like eggs with Valladolid sausage or Chaya Omelette. The restaurant has attracted attention for its traditional Yucatecan cuisine with surprising twists such as smoked pork belly panucho and queso relleno negro.
Nice and spacious. Yucatán's traditional dishes. Outdoor area, but if you prefer there's air conditioner. Food is great and service was awesome. Highly recommend.

We went there twice during our week-long stay in Merida. We like it a lot. Quite, well taken care of, place. The service was great! We have 0 Spanish knowledge 🥲 yet we didn’t feel lost or left out. The food was great and the price is reasonable (the average of that area). Would recommend!

Best food I’ve had in Merida. Run. Don’t walk to try their cochinillo pibil. We had asked locals where they eat and this spot was recommended. I’d make a whole trip to Merida just for this. Also. Fresh squeezed oj and great service. But between the hot sauce, proper tortillas and succulent pig, life is worth living all over again. Updating my review because we kept coming back to eat here. It was THAT DELICIOUS. Oh and they have their own PARKING

Saturday early Lunch. 4 top. Order: Pitcher of Agua de Chaya and Lima. EXCELLENT Ponchos de Cochinta- dry meat, needed flavor Cochinta Pibil. Good but was expecting more after watching Taco Chronicles on Netflix. Sopa the Lima- not what I was expecting. Mid at best. Service. SLOW. My Cochinta plate came out like 30min after everyone got their's. Pretty much everyone was done when I got my food. What's actually hard to get the waiter's attention. Nowhere to be seen. Unfortunately, I cannot say I will be back. Dark interior. Outside beautiful.

Manjar Blanco in Mérida offers a delightful brunch experience that beautifully showcases Yucatecan cuisine. This charming restaurant serves traditional dishes with a modern twist. A lot of Vegetarian options available. The refreshing hibiscus and Chaya juices are perfect complements to the meal. With attentive service and a welcoming ambiance, Manjar Blanco is a must-visit spot for brunch in Mérida

Wow wow wow. The cochinita pibil was outstanding, I want to go back for more already. Wonderful. It's unfair for us to rate the atmosphere because as we were the only ones in there. It was 4pm in 41 degrees. We just wish they were open for dinner.

The Merida English Library is a haven for expats in search of English books and a place to connect with others. It offers an extensive catalog of activities, including home tours, art gallery tours, and wine tasting evenings. The library serves as a valuable resource for English speakers living in or visiting Merida, providing not only books but also opportunities to socialize and engage with the community.
We LOVE all that the English library does for the community as well as the incredible resources it offers. MEL is our "go-to" resource to connect expats with each other, meet new friends, and volunteer. It is not only a wonderful way to bring the community together, it also supports locals. Also, a HUGE THANK YOU to Greg Casisi, president, for attending our recent Mérida Scouting Trip. We appreciate everything you do including your outreach, availability to help and inform others, and your commitment to the expat and local communities! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

This is one of the most beautiful libraries I've ever been! I moved back to the states but when I lived there I would take my students for a school tour and it was fabulous! The atmosphere is wonderful and everyone is so nice! MEL is a must visit place if you're living or planning to visit Merida.

The library is a valuable resource for English speakers who are moving to or just visiting Merida. We were just here for a month, but took advantage of their very expansive and impressive catalog of activities. For example, we took their home tour, art gallery tour, and considered their wine tasting evening. Check them out! Even if it’s just to see the cats on the back patio!

Lovely community library in Merida Centro I can’t believe we found this wonderful place, just around the corner from our hotel, on our last hour in Merida! On our next visit we’ll have to visit sooner to find out what’s going on. There were 2 friendly librarians to answer questions about the library and what it’s like to live in Merida. The facility is beautiful and well-stocked with a wide variety of books and other media. They even have a kids’ and teens’ department. In the back, there’s a little café and outdoor garden space for relaxing and for community events such as yoga classes. They accept donations too, so bring your extra books when you travel here to help their collection grow. A little gem in the center of Merida!

Parque de Santa Lucía, located in central Merida, is a vibrant hub of cultural and nightlife activities. The park hosts the Yucatecan Serenade, an open-air dance with live music that has been a weekly tradition since 1965. On Friday and Saturday nights, locals gather in the square for salsa dancing. While the area can get noisy at times, it's a great spot for those looking to immerse themselves in Merida's lively bar and cantina scene.
Nice place to go and have something to eat. Streets are full of shops on the way. Locals are using the area for different celebrations / festivals so worth popping around specially when you hear music
Orsolya N — Google review
By the work "park" I imagine a lot of greenery, trees and benches to relax on, but there is almost none of that in this park. It's more like a small square with three palm trees and restaurants. What's interesting here are two huge white benches (or more like chairs) that you can sit on if you are able to climb them. However, if you are in luck, you may see the Yucatecan Serenade - an open-air dance with live music - taking place in this park every week. I imagine this event is what makes this park interesting.
Cyntia P — Google review
City park in the historic center of the city. The park has GINORMOUSgossip chairs, the white chairs that face opposite directions for lovers to kiss or gossip to share information. The park is surrounded by restaurants. Once a week there is a city sponsored concert in the park. Get there early to sign a seat for the singing and dancing. The park is easy to get two of you are visiting in the center or the historic center of the city, or a quick Uber ride from the outside of the center. This is a lovely park, but it is just a park. The oldest park in the city of Merida

There’s often events going on at this park, like traditional music and dances. This is an iconic little park in the heart of Merida, so it’s a must visit if you are around the area. The place captures the Mexican culture and colors.
Fauna — Google review
Great plaza a few blocks away from downtown with lots of places to sit and restaurant around the park. Don't miss sitting on the large chairs and get your picture taken. In the evenings there is usually live music.
Alexa B — Google review
Beautiful park just blocks from centro. If you're staying on the north side, you can walk past this park every time you're heading to the city center. The park is shaded by beautiful trees, and has 4 restaurants with outdoor seating to relax in the shade. Tucked in the corner is Ki'Xocolatl - authentic Yucatan chocolate that is a must visit, and the perfect place to get some gifts for friends and family when you get back home. Also Grab a few photos at the Sillas gigantes (giant kissing chairs) or wait to get those down in the centro by the Merida sign. One of the favorite things we did was the free walking tour with Gabriel that starts here. This is a great way to see the highlights of the city, the history and a few of Gabriel's favorite places all in 2 hours. Please take my word for it - do this on your first day and you'll feel like you got the insider tour - https://www.freewalkingtourmerida.mx/. Lastly, and maybe most importantly, Yucatecan Serenade, an open-air dance with live music, has been held weekly on Thursday night at 9:00 pm since 1965 right here (now you know what the stadium bench seating is for). Please take my word for it... this is the place to be on Thursday. Locals and travelers alike attend this event and it is always amazing and it is always busy. Get there at 8:00 pm (or earlier) to get a seat at this free event, because it is the place to be! The regional music was played by a full band, and some of the songs were accompanied by traditional dancers. You don't want to miss this on your visit!
Eric M — Google review
This park is full of joy. I went there for the Thursday local dance show which starts at 9 p.m.. The people there are in a really good mood, they are chilling, talking, laughing and just enjoying their time there. Come around 8 to 8.30, find a nice spot to sit. Bring snacks or buy some of the many locals selling snacks, water, coke or buy some food from the food stalls or many restaurants.

Great place to hangout. Several restaurants, little pricey but good food everywhere. Make sure you ask if there are discounts, we got our drinks half price at the Soberana patio.

Parque de las Américas is a vibrant urban oasis in Merida, celebrated for its Mayan-inspired outdoor concert space that comes alive with evening dancing and an array of food trucks. This park serves as a cultural hub, fostering connections among locals and visitors alike. With its recently restored monumental fountain and dedicated children's area, it has become a beloved gathering spot for the community, benefiting over 11,500 residents.
This is really beautiful and special, wish more public spaces in Mexico celebrated our heritage and culture in such good taste

Nice place to visit, dedicated to all south american countries, Dr.Carlos Finlay, Jose Marti ... Visited at Sunday. the acustic shell is awesome. The fountain was out of service - sad In general the park buildings and monuments shoud have more maintanance.

My favorite park in Mérida. Beautiful all year round. Magical at Christmas time.
Mary D — Google review
I think we missed the bulk of the Christmas lights, unfortunately. (We could see many of them a few days ago as we drove by, and a few days later stopped and checked the park out.) This park is situated on 4 city blocks, the design and structures are a nod to the Mayan past. I think the park could use a little TLC and maintenance, otherwise it's a very nice place to go for a walk, a rest, and somewhere to take the kids.
Todd J — Google review
A relaxing walk. There are four blocks; the first block is a children's park, the second is a fountain, the 3rd is a library, and the 4th is an amphitheater. The evenings (especially near the weekend) fill up with local vendors of corn, tacos, tortas, marquesitas, and ice cream. a relaxing historical park that is a part of the Garcia Gineres neighborhood since the early 1940's
Vincent D — Google review
Perhaps the nicest park in Mérida, and that's saying something. It is divided in to four sections including a great park for kids, an amphitheater and enormous neo-maya fountain. Lots to explore, that's for sure. Also tons of great food stands, especially in the evenings and weekends.
Carlos R — Google review
this park consists of 4 sections, I enjoyed all of them! The first section has a playground with games, small cycle track and carts. The second section is the acoustic shell, which is an open-air theater adorned with Mayan elements, around it has 2 corridors reminiscent of the temple of warriors in Chichen Itza, since it is formed by many columns. The night I was there, beautiful music was playing during a dance class. The third is the "Jose Marti" library that has the shape of a Mayan hut adorned with a pheasant and a deer on both sides of the building, in the back, can you find a place to read and admire each shield of the countries of Latin America, The fourth is a frontispiece in the form of a platform, adorned with faces of the rain god and 7 snakes reminiscent of Kukulcan.

La Plancha Park in Merida is a vast and impressive urban park that offers something for everyone. The park features a wading pool, bike lanes, walking paths, an amphitheater, a large lake, restrooms, and a variety of dining options. Visitors can also explore train cars scattered throughout the park that have been repurposed into gift shops and snack bars as a nod to the area's history as a former train station.
Hands down one of the most beautiful and fun parks in all of Mexico, and the “Central Park” of Merida. Modern and well maintained kids playgrounds (5 to choose from!) a wading pool, bike paths, a lake and a good court with amazing options. You could spend multiple days here and not see everything it has to offer, including some old train cars and a train museum with a lot of history. If you have kids, this is THE place to take them for 0 to low cost and form core memories.

I loved this Parque la Plancha. I saw several people doing lots os sport activities, walking, jogging, etc. Perfect for children and older people too. I stopped at a very cute souvenir store, all hand made items. Lots of birds and saw several bird nests too. It must be perfect at night because it was very hot.

This is a beautiful new park built in a former railway yard. You can circumnavigate the whole area in the shade under a former elevated railway track. Absolutely love it.
Bruce L — Google review
It’s very cool. Has various basic outdoors gyms, various super cool kid’s playgrounds, fountains, lots of walking areas with a roof! A food court… Could definitely have recycling stations. Some square minded type of things like wearing a helmet at the skatepark part is mandatory, you can’t “step on the grass” although yeah you can… It’s very secure, clean, there’s a lot of staff. The vegetation and infrastructure are beautifully taken care of.

WOW this is a huge, fantastic park! The city has done an excellent job at creating this park where there is something for everyone. A wading pool, bike lanes, walking paths, amphitheatre, a massive lake, washrooms, a big eating area with many small restaurant options to choose from. As a nod to the past of this area being previously a train station, there are train cars throughout the park. Some have been turned into gift shops and snack bars. Currently there are still some parts of the park underway but they're moving ahead well. Lots of parking, lots of shaded walking areas, shaded playgrounds for kids, picnic tables, you name it...you'll likely find it at La Plancha!
Todd J — Google review
Wow. It's not complete but they are hard at work. The dog park is open, the 2 exercise areas are open, and 5 playgrounds for kids! Wow. The water features, walk around the large pond, very impressive. A nice dedicated bike path. A very peaceful place in the heart of a busy city.

Visitors can enjoy concerts and various events while keeping an eye out for upcoming exhibitions.
We went to see the Matisse exhibit at this facility. It was not busy, was very well laid out, air conditioned, and free admission. It was part of Merida's birthday celebrations, I believe it is here for three months, very worthwhile to see. You are allowed to take pictures but not with a flash.

Cenote Xlacah is a stunning natural limestone pool located near the ancient Maya archaeological site of Dzibilchaltun, making it a perfect combination of history and natural beauty. This cenote is one of the largest and deepest in the Yucatan, measuring 320 feet wide and 147 feet deep. It's often referred to as the best cenote in Merida due to its proximity, being less than 45 minutes away from the city.
Place was great and full of ancient structures to explore, it give a great sense of scale to how the native people lived. Visitors should definitely apply sun screen and bring an umbrella or light clothes because the sunshine is intense!

Initially, my partner and I, we were going there to swim. None mentioned we werent allowed to do it and we already paid for the entrance, the museum and the arqueological area. We realised we weren't allowed to swim at the very last minute when we got there infront of the cenote and realized it was all closed for the people not to use. Also the museum was close in reparation process, but we got charged for it. I wouldn't mind to miss the swim if is to protect the area and the environment but I would of appreciate to know at the entrance before we pay for 3 different things and only get 1. Just to be fair ans clear, would be nice to advise the visitors on what we really get with the ticket. The arqueological area was beautiful to see and so is the nature around the pyramids. I recommend to get there with your own transport or booked transport to pick you up and drop you off, otherwise there were not public transport available once you exit during week days, I am unsure about weekends so I advice you to researchabout it or to book your transportin advance if.

This is part of the ruins, and a perfect respet from the very powerful sun that cooks you as you explore the ruins. There is a shallow and deep end (44m or 140ish feet) deep. If you don't want to swim, there are also lots of ledges to sit and dangle your feet in the water. As a bonus, there are tiny fish swimming all around you (completely harmless).

Located just off the highway from Merida to Progreso, this is a must do to take in some local history. Parking is about 20 pesos and admission for non locals was 227 pesos. Takes about an hour to see the structures, an air conditioned museum is also on the property Bring your bathing suit and take a dip in a cenote to cool off, definately worth the experience.

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Ateneo de Yucatán MACAY, housed in a former colonial palace, showcases a diverse collection of modern and contemporary Mexican art. Situated in the Plaza Grande near the Merida Cathedral, it is the sole contemporary art museum in Merida featuring works by both national and international artists.
To enter the museum you have to walk through an emblematic passage where we were welcomed with live violin music, which made it even more pleasant. The museum is in an attractive colonial building with a lot of different spaces and a large in door patio, which all carries beautiful artwork of 3 native artist Fernando Garcia Ponce, Fernando Castro Pacheco y Gabriel Ramirez Aznar as well as some other invited artists. Airport
Upon arrival at Mérida International Airport, the scent of guayaberas fills the air, a traditional garment worn by locals. The airport is conveniently located just 8 miles from the city center and serves flights from various destinations including the US, Canada, and other Mexican cities. Despite being small, the airport boasts efficient security checks and a modest food hall with dining options. Currently undergoing expansion, it is well-connected to Mexico City but not as much to other destinations like Cancun.
Super cold airport, the prices are utterly absurd for the food that they provide, but the services of the airport itself are top-notch, clean, and efficient. I walked in through the front entrance to the Aeromexico gate, and it was a fairly simple matter to locate a machine at the head of a line to check-in. They have free wifi so I could find my flight details, and input them into the machine. It was a little awkward when an assistant walked up behind me with a greeting, and then immediately started hitting buttons unsolicited. I didn’t really like that, but that’s kind of the culture here so I’m more or less accustomed to it. People often help eachother here without being asked. I got patted down without explanation, but it was done very professionally and I wasn’t groped in any way. All in all, exactly what I expected from a high class airport, though it’s smaller inside than I expected, or the international airports in the USA are simply crazy massive for no reason haha
Agony A — Google review
Mérida International Airport offers a surprisingly pleasant travel experience. The terminal is noticeably clean and feels modern with recent updates. Navigating immigration was a breeze, thanks to the short lines and the genuinely friendly and efficient personnel. Their welcoming attitude left a positive first impression of Yucatán. Overall, the airport provides a comfortable and stress-free start or end to any trip.

Americans: Stay away from this place Ci Banco when trading your money. Trade it when you get back to the USA. I was trading pesos to dollars and they said they were trading at 21.60 peso for 1 dollar but were giving me less than that back in dollars. They don’t speak any English at all. When I used the translator to speak to them they made no sense in explaining this to me. I also showed them the converters online and how much more they were and they were trading at 20 peso per dollar but they still acted like the amount they gave us was correct. They said they don’t charge to do the money conversion, so if they are not charging then they are pocketing(stealing) the money, because it makes no sense why my mom and I were both cheated each by like $3-4 usd.

Smallish airport. Security check is quick and efficient. Food Hall with a few dining options. Lady photos are of the lounge mentioned below. Only one Priority Pass lounge here when we traveled (Amex Platinum compatible), which is just after security on the right. Not listed on Google Maps and apparently not allowed to add places in this region yet, so I'm mentioning it here. Not a big lounge, minimal food (tiny sandwiches with little contents, chips, granola bars, etc). Bar area with a few free drink options.

Park
Parque de la Alemán, located northeast of central Merida, is a local favorite offering a charming urban space with various attractions. During the day, it's a typical neighborhood park where people walk their dogs or enjoy coffee with friends. The park covers an entire city block and features playgrounds, grassy areas for playing, benches for relaxation, a skate park, and a walking track.
So happy to see they finally cleaned up the dog park!! Nice short grass and new obstacles. It's now a great place to let your dogs run. Love the skate park there, too, although the transitions on the half are way off. Gets steep way too quick.

Dog park, seating, near local eatery Boho's and a Super Aki. Relaxing place to sit and chill
Maryam S — Google review
Great overall experience anytime of the night or day. The park sits in the middle of a bustling neighborhood of restaurants and a few stores. The park itself contains a dog park, skate park, and a huge open area with near workout machines were physical classes are often held during the day and evening. At night the park comes alive with mini carousels and ther rides for the kids, music and lots of skateboarders, joggers, and marquesita vendors.

Almost no one in the daytime because of the sun. But around the time the sun goes down, It looks like almost everyone in the neighborhood is out. Zumba dance class at sunset time, and has a lot of food trucks for local people with local prices.

Parque de La Mejorada is a must-visit in Merida, featuring open plazas with benches, statues, and well-maintained grounds. The park houses 47 buildings used for educational and civilian purposes, including museums, theaters, and libraries. It offers pleasant pathways surrounded by lush trees, green spaces, ponds, and seating areas. Visitors can admire the large bronze sculpture honoring the Ninos Heroes de Chapultepec.
I had read about this place and needed to find out what it was all about. Great little gift shop with a café. Some very nice things that I have not seen before in Merida. Prices are reasonable. Check it out!
William H — Google review
Large platform dominates the square that is dedicated to the Ninos Heros killed by USA Marines in Mexico City in 1848. Only a block away from main Merida police station and across the street from the UADY architecture campus, lots of students hanging out. Unfortunatly drunks, and annoying self-entitled street verdors here selling pure crap. They spoil it for everyone who would like to sit quietly and enjoy the park. This a general problem in parts of Merida. Old church, now closed, on SE corner across from the square. South and west the neighborhood is genteifying. Inside the old walled city, witk classic arched gates to the walled city 1 block south.
William L — Google review
It's a nice parque, with an old church, a statue an old city entrance arch and nice buildings and it offers places to sit and enjoy your drink or snack,

This historic square is an ideal place to take a little break amongst its shady trees. In the center of the plaza is the monument of the Niños Heroes. It features the sculpture of an eagle and six bronze figures that represent the teenage cadets who are reported to have sacrificed their lives in the 1847 battle of Chapultepec against invading U.S forces.

La Isla Mérida is a shopping center located within the Cabo Norte residential development, featuring architecture and concept similar to Plaza la Isla in Cancun. The mall offers department stores, exclusive brands, a beautiful lake for various activities, green areas, and a wide variety of restaurants and family entertainment zones such as cinemas, playgrounds, and an auditorium. With over 70,000 square meters of space, it provides an eco-friendly environment for continuous hours of fun.
This mall has so many activities, great food, shopping and entertainment. I spent the afternoon watching people enjoying water sports, rock climbing, and lots of shopping as well as enjoying great food. Lots of different shops some brands from all over the world. I also noticed it was pet friendly another plus for this mall.

One of the best malls in Mérida. Has a beautiful lake out back, the Liverpool is huge and has a great selection of international imported goods. The wife enjoys Muy Mucho because is has cute stuff there quite often the Zara home is great for nice niche items also. Only thing La Isla is missing is good food.. the restaurants there are pretty mediocre to be honest. Tatemar was the last good restaurant there and they closed up and moved south of the periferico.

The fact that it is free is awesome, just make sure you go on a day that doesn't have rain in the forecast as they will close the rides if it rains and it takes a while to reopen. There is also an Aqua park next door with inflatables with water but kids must be wearing swimsuits to enter.

"Mérida en Domingo" is a vibrant event that takes place in Plaza Grande from 9 am to 7 pm every Sunday. The area around the plaza is closed to traffic, and it transforms into a lively scene with live music, dancing, and pop-up restaurants. Local vendors set up their stalls, creating an open-air flea market atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy street food, shop for local wares, and immerse themselves in the cultural and artistic ambiance of the event.
A lot of restaurants street food shopping and live music. Definitely worth checking out on Sunday
Nate A — Google review
I thought it would bigger and have more variety. It was mostly vendors and a lot of little kid's stuff. However, I am mainly writing this to complain that the event schedules online for both this event and Merida Fest were inaccurate and completely useless. Nothing that was listed in the program corresponded to what was happening on the ground. It would be nice to have an accurate program of events, so you can attend the ones you're interested in and aren't just wasting your time senselessly walking around the plaza in circles.

Los 7 Cenotes - Sales Office is a collection of natural sinkholes near Merida, once used by the Mayans for freshwater. Today, they are popular swimming spots and offer opportunities for scuba diving and cave exploration. These cenotes are formed when limestone bedrock collapses to reveal groundwater, creating clear pools that were vital water sources for the ancient Maya.

We had an Uber drop us off around 11am today, Sunday February 9th. The door was closed no answer when you rang the bell and the next door neighbour had no idea about any office selling tickets to any cenotes. He told us that all he knows is that they sell material/cloth. Have no idea what this is all about. If you're closed on Sunday then you should reflect that on the web page.
Kyle R — Google review
This was an absolutely amazing experience we had here with Alicia and her wonderful staff in this incredibly beautiful and magical place! First, let me start by saying that you must make reservations in advance. This is not simply visiting a swimming hole, it is an entire experience that includes bike riding, bungee jumping, swimming and snorkeling in a beautiful open cenote, snacks, an amazing “leap of faith” experience in a closed cenote underground, with a wonderful meal at the end to celebrate, with all drinks included. This is suitable for all age groups and even small children; there were a few in our group. I have visited many cenotes in Mexico over the years and this is far and away the most fantastic not to be missed experience. Remember to book in advance and get ready for a unique and unforgettable experience.

I am quite surprised to see the bad reviews. I took my daughter on this tour a few months ago and it was excellent! I own a home in Merida and make sure to send all of my guests. We visited 5 denotes on private property with bikes appetizer's were served as you exit each with a fabulous lunch and entertainment to end. They pick you up and take you back to Merida. It is much less crowded than any of the others and they do offer private tours. I loved every minute of this tour!

If you have visited the Colosseum, the Amazon, Kilimanjaro, Everest. Chichen Itza, the Great Wall of China, etc you are in for a big surprise. This is not a tour or a trip as going to those places. Los 7 Cenotes will become the best Experience of your life and you are going to want to go back with more friends and relatives to share that Experience with them. Without giving out any spoilers, you will connect with nature and the Mayan culture and spirit and be in the center of an environment that has taken millions of years to evolve and is still alive. Nothing compares to this place. Everybody is trying to sell an "Experience", THIS IS IT . This place will connect with your soul and leave a mark. In addition, the quality of service from Ricardo, Alicia and the entire crew is superb, exceeds the 5 stars. La Chaya Maya is a highly recommended and unpretentious restaurant located in the heart of the city. It offers classic Yucatecan dishes at reasonable prices, making it a favorite among tourists and culinary enthusiasts.
I gotta say, this place has got it all when it comes to local cuisine, Mexican atmosphere, fresh tortillas made on the spot and friendly service. We enjoyed the food very much and the drinks too. The tortillas are prepared by a person sitting inside the restaurant by the tables. The service was attentive and friendly. We’d go back! Highlights: cochinita pibil and tamales Not our fave: recado and the people outside trying to lure you in, makes it seem a little shady I must say.

What a great restaurant. Welcoming staff, delicious food, pleasant family friendly atmosphere. We have the cochinita pibil and poc chuc. Both were tender, juicy and delicious. The service was very attentive. We didn't have to wait. It was so good we went back a second timime on our last night in Merida. Delicious!

After all the amazing reviews and coverage this place gets, we thought we had to try it for ourselves and went to two of their locations within a few days. While the atmosphere is nice, feels very authentic, and the corn tortillas being prepared in real-time is great, I found the food to be quite bland. The meals looked delicious but flavor was lacking in most of it. The staff was lovely and helpful.

Great place to get a bunch of typical yucatecan food in one place. This location is quite spacious and indoors if you're looking for AC and fewer mosquitos. La Pigua is a stylish restaurant known for its high-energy atmosphere and international wine selection. The interiors may be unremarkable, but the focus here is on haute Yucatecan seafood, including coconut-crusted shrimp, buttery mojo de ajo fish, and rich pan de cazon. The establishment attracts a lively lunch crowd that enjoys shots of Herradura or sangrita.
The waiters were charming and took good care of us, we couldn’t resiste to eat the oysters and decided to take one octopus to share, they brought two plates of half the order which was very convenient to have rather than one plate at the center, i grew very picky on the margaritas this one was made with sugar instead of Cointreau, still very good, pricy but worth it, the only thing was that the table next to us was very loud on her personal conversation ( i ll spare the detail of her displaying her surgery )

La Pigua was our favorite high-end restaurant in Merida! Great atmosphere, very nice waiter and food, absolutely delicious!!! We ordered coconut shrimp, jumbo size and very tasty! Then we ordered a 650-gram lobster, this was a monster lobster cooked to perfection, melt in your mouth juicy lobster, probably one of the best lobsters I have had and highly recommend!! We followed this with their in-house dessert, coconut cake, this was very good also, if you like Tres Leches, you will love this dessert! All in all, one of the best restaurants in the Yucatan!

The place looks great. We entered at a time that wasn't so busy. Nothing to criticize about the service. I ordered the personal 3 cheese with chicken which was phenomenal. I tried the grilled chicken and beef that my peers ordered and they were both tender and juicy. I also ordered the oreo cheesecake desert which wasn't anything too crazy- if you like cheesecake and chocolate then it'll taste good. each meal was around 200 Pesos. highly recommend. An okay dining experience. The music was a bit loud for our taste, and at first we had serious communication issues with our server, but we were given our food order very quickly...2 drinks, a half order of guacamole, and 5 tacos el pastor to share....all served and finished within 20 minutes. Handy location right on Calle 59 and 60. All the staff were welcoming and friendly.

Stopped in here based on menu and reviews. Great place in a good location. The food was delicious and the Poc-Chuc was excellent. We had this in tacos and burritos. Oh boy! So i was wondering why there was no al pastor pizza instead of the normal Hawaiian. And although i had an early dinner, I decided to check out the menu!! This pizza is the best mexico-talien fusion dish. Pineapples, al pastor, make sure to add some lime juice, spicy salsa and onions and coriander on top. Absolutely delicious. Even got my italian gf to eat some! She wont admit it was good. But ate half the pizza! Also the staff were dancing and cheering with the live band playing. Service was super quick and generally the place was packed but the mood was really good!

This zoo showcases over 1,000 animals, including both local wildlife and exotic species like tigers and lions. The park is thoughtfully designed with pleasant wooded paths that invite leisurely strolls, alongside playgrounds and picnic areas perfect for relaxation.
More of a kids place than expected. Still very nice. It was February when I visited and a weekday so not everything was open but it's free, nice walking trail and plenty of shade and ice cream. Not really a fan of animals in small pens but they seemed content. Lots of animals lions & Tigers no bears lol.

Wonderful Zoo with LOTS of shade!! Both my kids (9 & 2) had a great time here. The animals overall look like they are in good health. My toddler even wanted some of the food that the birds had 😅 (fruit salad). I appreciate the playgrounds and food stalls. Makes it easy to spend a few hours here. I came on a weekday both times so it wasn’t very busy.

Amazing Free Zoo – A Fun and Family-Friendly Day Out! We recently visited this zoo and had an absolutely wonderful experience. One of the best things about it is that admission is completely free, making it a fantastic option for families, students, or anyone looking for an affordable day of fun. The zoo offers a wide variety of animals to see, from exotic species to local favorites. There are plenty of exhibits and enclosures that are well-maintained and engaging for visitors of all ages. Kids especially enjoyed seeing the animals up close, and there were plenty of opportunities for photos and learning. In addition to the animals, the zoo features many food vendors offering a range of delicious snacks and meals, so you’ll never go hungry during your visit. Whether you're craving a quick bite or a sit-down meal, there's plenty of choice. A standout feature is the free train ride that takes visitors around the zoo. It’s a great way to cover more ground and enjoy the scenery without getting too tired, especially for little ones or those who prefer a more relaxed experience. The layout of the zoo is thoughtfully designed, with lots of shaded areas scattered throughout the grounds. This was a huge plus on a warm day, as it kept us comfortable and protected from the sun. There are also many benches and picnic spots if you want to take a break or enjoy a packed lunch. Another important convenience is the abundance of free bathrooms, which made our visit much more comfortable and hassle-free. It’s always nice to see such thoughtful amenities provided for visitors. Overall, this zoo exceeded our expectations. It’s a clean, well-organized, and family-friendly destination that offers a lot for free. We left with great memories and a desire to return soon. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a fun, educational, and budget-friendly outing!

This zoo has a lot of animals and isnt just a zoo. It is a park for the little ones too. There are a lot of vendors for food and plenty of bathrooms. Restrooms are free but tips are asked for at the door. Most important thing I can say is that alot of the reviews and write-ups online are incorrect or deceiving. All that I saw said the zoo opens at 8AM, that is incorrect. The zoo opens at 9AM on most days amd the park opens at 8AM. The vendors were starting to open around 8:30 for food but most were still closed when I left around 1030 on a Wednesday. The entire time I was there there was someone cleaning enclosures. The enclosures are old zoo style, maybe think private collection? There are some indictments for some of the animals and others that you would find roaming the plains they basically have an open area to move around in. I had a great experience and the animals on display seemed happy and well maintained.

Nice park to walk around. I cannot say much, we went at quite times, not sure how it is when all the stalls are open, but looks like good fun for kids

Very nice family zoo! Free. All the animals you would see at a pay zoo. Hippos lions tigers jaguars giraffes birds monkeys etc. There is a small train that goes through the zoo. takes about 3 hours to walk through if you would like to see it all. Photo is the entrance at night.

Loved this place. Free access to the park and the train is $1peso per ride. Takes you all around the park. There are tiendas that sell souvenirs, toys, treats and a little cafeteria area with picnic tables and washrooms. We were very impressed by the number of animals as well as the type. There were so many cool ones and the way the areas are setup, you can see the animals clearly. The park is pretty outdated but well worth the visit. We spent a very nice afternoon here for about 1-2hrs. I would definitely recommend!

Parque Zoológico Animaya is a unique zoo and play space located on the outskirts of Merida, Mexico. The park aims to provide a safari-like experience for visitors, with large recreation spaces for the animals designed to mimic their natural habitats. Divided into three prairies - American, Euro-Asian, and African - the zoo is set in an abandoned ancient Mayan city that has been reclaimed by wildlife.
This is a beautiful zoo. Very large and very scenic. The animals have lots of space and are very well cared for. There are lots of banos, small taco and ice-cream stands, carnival type games, a train to ride around the park in, a boat ride on the lake, tonnes of car parking. And, it's free! What's not to like!
Ernie Q — Google review
It's always nice to visit Animaya, the trails are relaxing and seeing all the animals (very well kept) is always special. They recently finished the big cat area which is gorgeous, they did an awesome job creating the tree shades for all their resident felines.

We visited with 2 adults, 1 senior, and 3 children (ages 7, 9, and 11), and it was enjoyable for all ages. My elderly father, who has some difficulty walking, was able to complete the entire loop even in the afternoon heat by taking breaks on the shaded benches along the way. I heard there may be free wheelchair rentals available near the front entrance, which could be a good option for those who need extra support. A big tip: wear pants! We made the mistake of wearing shorts and got bitten a lot by mosquitoes, even after applying repellent. When you enter through the main gate and walk toward the tall lookout tower, there’s a booth on the right where you can buy tickets for the train and catamaran. We arrived at 11am, but the earliest train tickets available were after 2:30pm, which is also the time it often rains in late September. Tickets are just 5 pesos per person, but I saw some guests trying unsuccessfully to get refunds when rides were canceled due to rain. The catamaran boat ride was not operating on the day we visited. If you take the right-hand path from the entrance (facing the lookout tower), you’ll see the animal enclosures first. If you go left, you’ll reach the train station, water park, amusement rides, games, and food area. If you’re visiting during rainy season, it’s smart to head toward the large food hall at the sight of rain, which has plenty of covered seating and washrooms. Beyond that area, by the amusement rides, there’s also one larger shelter with benches. These covered spots are lifesavers for families with young kids or seniors who can’t dash quickly when the rain starts

It is a really amazing zoo with a lot of beautiful animals with exhibits that let you get very close up to some of the large cats.

We adore this zoo. The very well cared for animals roam free, while the humans are behind the fences. All the plains animals are free to interact with each other, and seem very comfortable and well fed.

El Fabuloso Pez is a must-visit for food enthusiasts. The tortilla de queso is highly recommended, as it promises to redefine your love for corn or flour tortillas. The pulpero and Chile relleno tacos are described as fantastic and amazing, while the lobster taco with rice is also a standout dish. Visitors express eagerness to return and explore more of the menu, especially for the tortillas de queso.
The food is always delicious and the service was good.

I am almost am too full to write this review. What a delicious mean. The shrimp cocktail was filled with shrimp in a sauce that included diced onion and avocado. The tacos were like small, indivdual meals. We had octopus, shrimp and fish. One was better than the last. Can't wait to return. All the servers were terrific.

The food was amazing, it’s just that simple. You have to order the tortilla de queso, corn or flour will never be the same ever again. The pulpero was fantastic, cooked just right and perfect. The Chile relleno taco was amazing as once the lobster taco with rice! I assume everything has to just be amazing here. I can’t wait to return and try more, but only with the tortillas de queso!

Excellent food, you should go often to try each of the seafood tacos, but contain yourself as their portions are big. Great atmosphere, and amazing kids zone.

Best shrimp tacos ever. The shrimp are huge. Crunchy and Flamenco are fabulous. The first time we went they did not honor the special offer for the day, 3 tacos x 2, but we didn’t notice until after we left. Got gringo’d, which was unexpected as we have been there several times in previous years and it never happened! Next time we went, we confirmed ahead of time and all was well. Check your bill!

Stupendous food, stupendous service, everything stupendous!! Waiters are super nice and attentive, the place is nice and clean and the ceviche with avocado is to die for. "itS a BiT nOisY" my brother in Christ, what on this good Earth did you expect from a seafood taqueria in Mexico? You come here to eat good food, have a good laugh and an even better time! Of course it's gonna be noisy, that doesn't mean it's bad!

Specialty Museums
The Railroad Museum in Merida, known as Museo de Ferrocarriles de Yucatan, is a charming destination that offers visitors an engaging look into the region's industrial past. Housed in a historic train station, this museum highlights the significant impact of railroads on Yucatán’s economy and its connections to Mexico during the 19th and 20th centuries.
This museum is small but has something for everyone: kids who love trains, adults who love trains, people who are interested in the history of Mexico, people who love trippy immersive art. The trains are interesting and the history is informative but the real highlight was the immersive video experiences. One chronicles the history of the rope industry in Yucatan, the other is a wildly avant garde rendition of the history of the land through the galaxies from dinosaurs to Mayans to trains. It was absolutely awesome 11/10
Emma S — Google review
We went here by accident, it was pouring down and we needed shelter. But what followed ended up being a memorable experience we would highly recommend anyone. The entire complex, the park, the shops, all of it were amazing. The museum was the cherry on top, it was fun entertaining and although we have little interest in trains it was great learning about the history of the trains station. The relation to the Maya’s and the construction of said museum. Of tour in the area, don’t miss this!
Victor K — Google review
Probably the best train museum in the world! Very interesting modern features, including a simulation of a steam train ride with outside views and an hologram telling you a story which by itself is worth the price of the ticket. It also tells lots of interesting facts about the train history for Mexico, including songs dedicated to trains. Also, the Parque around it is very nice, super curated. The photos on Google don't give it justice! Trains are all around the park, and there is a huge food hall and a gigantic Mexican flag which is quite impressive!
Marta M — Google review
Very little information about trains. Not a traditional train museum. Very artistic and advanced exhibition but a bit misguided. You are chaperoned by guides through the whole thing one per room and they are not too knowledgeable in English at least. A missed opportunity in such an historical site
Erik J — Google review
Showed up, place had been closed for a while but the security guard after speaking with a co-working let us in for a bit more than the ticket price. The grass was pretty tall around the train cars and the wife didn't have the shoes on to be climbing around a big boy toys so I had at it for a while. The museum of course wasn't open, neither the caboose with the train set. But I got to climb around things and take lots of pictures. If you do get in you very much have to be careful of falling through a rotted floor or having a staircase or ramp fail. Normal for the area. One of the cooler things we did in Merida. Could of spend 1/2 a day hear easily
Rick P — Google review
Definetely to visit. Entrance is 20 pesos. It has parking. Toilet has problems (at the time didnt work). It is situated in opened area, field, so it is hot to walk around, when sun is up high. The museum has like 50 wagons of different kind, from different times. You can climb in, sit, touch- everything is allowed, except climb to the roof (for safety reasons). Some wagons is from USA. Some look alike. Some look like from cartoon. And the oldest one is from 1890, the private one, is under reconstruction, you cant see what's inside. Worth visiting.
O Z — Google review
It's interesting to look at the trains, and there is also a train that imitates movement a little, and there is also a 3D projector inside
Dmitrii K — Google review
This was a good way to spend a day. The entrance is through a guarded gate that seems like it is closed but is not. The guard will point you to the ticket stand / table and staff. You will need small cash as there may not be a great deal of change with the staff. The site can be warm so a water or refreshment is advisable. There was nothing there during our visit. We chose to take a taxi to the site and the bus back to Centro at the Mercado in Centro. I enjoyed walking around and inside many of the train cars that have been collected. The cars and engines are from Canada, USA and Mexico. Some are in poor shape, others are accessible for viewing. The volunteer staff were helpful and provided a starting point for our self directed tour. There are photos in one car and a large model HO train track being built with lots of interesting miniature buildings, lights, people and more. This is a train buffs delight for sure. Enjoy.

Parque de San Juan is a bustling city space in Merida, featuring a monument to former president Benito Juárez and an elegant fountain brought from Paris. The park is always lively with tourists and locals, offering a variety of food vendors and trinkets from carts around the square. Visitors can enjoy people-watching, live music, and local entertainment while exploring the historic surroundings. Izamal's rich history can be discovered through its narrow streets, traditional homes, and businesses.
a bit rough around the collar but this becoming one of my favourite parks. Different from some of the other parks but it has grit and uniqueness.
David B — Google review
Another park in Mérida which doesn't really look like a park - there is not much greenery here. It's definitely a nice place to see when you are already in Mérida, but it's not exactly the kind of park where I'd sit down, eat some grits, and relax. It's more of a place you just walk through, take a picture, and walk away again. However, there are couple of food and drink stands, so you can buy something if you want to.
Cyntia P — Google review
If you're looking for a captivating experience during the Día de Muertos celebration, the Walk of the Souls at Parque de San Juan is an absolute must-see. This annual event offers a beautiful homage to the traditions and customs surrounding this cherished holiday, and it certainly lives up to its reputation as an unforgettable experience. From the moment you arrive, you’re greeted by a vibrant atmosphere filled with colorful displays that pay tribute to those who have passed. The decorations are nothing short of stunning, showcasing intricate altars adorned with marigolds, photographs, and candles, all arranged masterfully to honor loved ones. Each display tells a unique story, merging creativity with the rich tapestry of Mexican culture. What truly makes the Walk of the Souls exemplary is the dynamic blend of activities available. The food stalls are a culinary delight, offering traditional treats like pan de muerto, tamales, pib, and various street foods that will make your taste buds go wild. Alongside this, the lively music that fills the air, from mariachi bands to traditional folk tunes, adds a joyous backdrop that enhances the overall experience. They have areas to get your face painted for 25 pessos, allowing visitors to embrace the spirit of the holiday by transforming into calaveras (sugar skulls). It’s not just fun; it’s a way to immerse yourself in the celebration and express the blend of reverence and joy that characterizes Día de Muertos. Entertainment is beautiful, with performances ranging from comedy to live music to storytelling that enrich the cultural experience, drawing you deeper into the heart of the holiday. The energy is palpable, as families, friends, and visitors come together to celebrate and reflect, making it a truly communal event. I highly recommend visiting Parque de San Juan during this time of year. The Walk of the Souls is not just an event; it's a beautiful cultural experience that leaves a lasting impression. The vibrant colors, enticing flavors, and rich traditions to be breathtaking. This is a celebration of life, love, and remembrance that should not be missed!

We came here each night as it was bustling with excitement and fun. Tones of vendors for food... sweet and treats to tacos and more! We sat down all evening and enjoyed people watching. We got serenade and listened to some local favorites. We watched a concert in the corner. They have lots of porta-potties but bring your own toilet paper... many had none! Lots of people selling clothing and trinkets as well! If you are in the area, take a look at my other listing for places we visited in the area! Enjoy 😉

Great place to relax and local to meet people waiting for combies to nearby towns. Food stands are OK, but limited food choices. This is the local alternative to the main plaza a few blocks to the north. Nice fountain. Overall, great place to relax in the shade large, old trees wherep hundereds of grackles roost at night. A few vendors, folks begging, but not aggresive like at the main square. This is a historic location, surrounded by 100+ year old architecture. Historic arched gate to the old walled city on SW corner. No problemos aqui.

This is the spot you’ve been looking for! Tacos were amazingggg. These are right up there with the best tacos we’ve had during our 4 trips to Mexico. Castakan con queso, pollo con chile poblano and chilibul were our favourites but all 6 tacos we had were great. Everyone was also so ridiculously nice and welcoming. Parque de los Hidalgos is a small, charming park located in the heart of Merida. It offers a green space for relaxation and shade from the sun with numerous benches hidden under palm and other trees. Adjacent to the park is Rectoria El Jesus Tercera Orden, a large Catholic church. The park hosts bawdy comedy acts at 11:30 am and lively music performances in the evening.
This is one of my favorite parks in Merida. Park is pretty small but with a Catedral de Mérida right next to it, it's a spot for a perfect pictures. Interesting park. Even though it is colloquially known as Parque Hidalgo, that apparently isn’t its official name. The Hidalgo soldiers used to train here in the past, and this is where the name comes from. The parque is simple and not that big, but it is surrounded by a few very historically significant buildings - the Jesuit built church, the first gender-mixed club in Mexico, and the region’s first hotel.

Participants appreciate the informative and engaging nature of the tour, which provides insights into Merida's history and culture while allowing for questions and photo opportunities along the way.
We had a great tour with Luisa! She knows a lot about the city, culture and food ;) I read some other reviews that you should give a (much) bigger tip, but that was not the case with this tour. Just give what you can miss and think the tour is worth :) Definitely recommend it!

Grocery store
Mercado Y Plaza Santiago is a traditional market located in Yucatan, offering a variety of local dishes at reasonable prices. The plaza features vendors selling typical meals, including Yucatan staples like cochinita pibil and rollo negro. While some visitors note the presence of homeless individuals and occasional odors, others praise the venue as a great place to experience authentic local cuisine.
The vendors have been so nice to us, explaining local foods and traditions and tolerating my poor Spanish. We've gotten great fruits, cheese and spices so far and will go again.

Experience a taste of Merida. Fresh produce, great prices and friendly service.
Stacie — Google review
More restaurants than food stalls, and a good place for lunch although most places offer their version of the same meals. Great place to try Yucatán staples like cochinita pibil and rollo negro.

Sometimes smelly and homless People. Good food and the strange Churchill is always lightingoff fireworks in the morning

Parque de Santa Ana is a charming city square that serves as a delightful hub in Merida, perfect for travelers seeking both relaxation and local culture. This picturesque park features inviting benches and shade trees, making it an ideal spot to unwind while enjoying views of the stunning pastel-yellow church that shares its name. Surrounding the park, you'll find the vibrant Santa Ana Mercado, where you can indulge in authentic Yucatecan street food like tacos and cochinita pibil.
Great place for breakfast. Fun place to visit during the day. Excellent place to be for día de Muertos.

Cute city square (not an actual park) with a statue and a church. There is an adjacent market and lots of shoppe and bars around it. This is. A great park to have your kids run around freely. About 6 blocks from the main plaza of Mérida.
Alexa B — Google review
With not as much shade as other plazas, and a lot of shops closed, my first visit was pretty uninspiring and hot. However, this plaza CAME ALIVE for the Oaxaca y la Guelaguetza festival. Came here every night just to soak it in.
Joshua G — Google review
Great little corner of Merida. Fun to watch the food vendors compete for your business in a friendly way. Be sure to try the fresh juices.

Beautiful and very historic if you’re historian or someone who likes history, this would be a great place for you to visit

Came here for the Sunday Market. Usually held in Plaza Grande due to construction it has been moved here. Much smaller park but still many vendors and food choices. Beautiful walk and views of the near by church.

Park
Nature & Parks
Parque de Santiago is a charming tree-filled park known for its vibrant atmosphere and local experiences. The park hosts a bustling fruit and vegetable market, as well as food stalls offering authentic Mexican cuisine. Adjacent to the park, Taqueria La Lupita and the street food mecca offer an array of tantalizing dishes, including tortas and ceviche. Visitors can also explore the Museo de la Gastronomia Yucateca to delve into the region's culinary history.
We were recommended by a local to check out the park for its food and dancing on Tuesday; so we did, and it was a great experience. The atmosphere was super lively and fun. We received great service from the restaurant, and the food was plentiful and delicious. It's definitely a must for anyone visiting the area.

Cute square, giving you plenty opportunity to observe everyday life. Just be mindful of random locals starting casual conversations and talking to you about sites and stuff you need to check out, then casually leading you to select stores. It’s a trick mostly used by store owners to attend clients. They will tell you lines along the lines of ‘everything else is from China, this is the only real Mayan store’ etc. this happened to us on our first day and we fell for it. The person in question was friendly, spoke English and German and was very smooth in luring us.
Viktor M — Google review
I have been there several times, food is good, the icecream is ok, just not clean enough at the restaurants facing the playground.
Carlos A — Google review
It's ok. There are eating places and am ice cream place. I have seen nicer parques in Merida.
Maryam S — Google review
Nice plaza with a Mercado next to it that has food stands with fresh fruit vegetables, beans, also fresh chicken and pork stands. Also small prepared food stalls with open air seats and a tortilleria.
Roger C — Google review
Lovely park with many great restaurants on the park and others within a few meters. Spectacular at night with all the lights and lanterns lit. Yucatecan Serenade, an open-air dance with live music, has been held weekly since 1965 at this park on a Thursday evening around 9pm
Rod H — Google review
Santiago Park is a pleasant park with lots of shady trees and a fountain. The park shares a space with its namesake church, market, and lots of inexpensive little restaurants. During the day there are street vendors and on Tuesday nights, an old school band plays and many locals come to dance.
