Arts organization
Auckland Art Gallery, also known as Toi o Tamaki, is housed in a stunning 1800s château-style building and features a diverse collection of national and international art, including Maori works. Established in 1888, it was the first permanent art gallery in New Zealand. The gallery's four floors showcase over 15,000 artworks, ranging from traditional Maori paintings to European masterpieces and contemporary pieces by New Zealand artists.
Auckland Art Gallery – Where art breathes and the soul listens Stepping into the Auckland Art Gallery feels like crossing into another realm — from the noise of the city into a sanctuary of silence, color, and emotion. You’re never quite prepared for what happens inside. The walls, lined with works that speak every language of the human heart, seem to whisper stories from other times, other eyes, other worlds. Each gallery is its own universe. From powerful Māori portraits to bold contemporary pieces, everything invites you to look deeper — not just at the art, but within yourself. The building itself is a masterpiece: elegant, open, and light-filled. With soaring wooden columns like trees and rooftops that stretch toward the sky, it feels like a cathedral devoted to creativity. A place to feel, reflect, and be transformed. Because here, you don’t just see art — you experience it. 🎨🖼️✨

A great place to visit. This time round went to the 'A Century of Modern Art'. This was exhibition did cost. Other areas are free for you to wonder. Highly recommend. The gift shop has great gifts. There is also a cafe available. Pictures of the exhibition and other parts of the gallery.
Lisa — Google review
Went to go see the “A century of modern art” and it was amazing. Everything was set up well with each paintings given a description that fits perfectly. Though the layout was a little strange with the room connecting to both left and right rooms, giving it not much of a clear direction to go to next. Other part of the art gallery was great with the huge room being the best, especially the cats (tigers). Definitely should visit at least once especially with different exhibitions on all the time.
Shi H — Google review
Recent visit was for the 'A Century of Modern Art' show, it is much more relaxing and enjoyable to visit on a weekday. The gallery isn't too big meaning you can see everything in one visit. There's a small gallery store with a great selection of goods and a nice cafe on the 2nd floor. It does get confusing to navigate and locate the old/heritage site of the building which contains the gallery's owed pieces. Yearly memberships available, prices have gone up a lot for them. I bought a membership with guest pass, it cost over $150 I believe. In the past I recall it was $120 and it was cheaper before that too. But you have unlimited access to paid shows and membership gives you 10% off at gallery store and cafe.
S C — Google review
A lovely visit. The art gallery was vibrant with a family event, Suzi Cato singing, musicians and wonderful art. The Cezanne is magic but there are so many wonderful displays. Lovely cafe as well.

We visited this art gallery close to our accommodation.. it’s free but you have to check in your backpack.. it has a ground floor which has the foyer+ gift shop .. the Mezzanine includes an art land for children ( where they can build cities with a special play dough) , a Tread of time with special portraits.. Level 1 has a section with abstract + surrealism paintings , the Robertson gift paintings, abstract that uses geometry, a section has Mãori treasured portraits, a section with some Pablo Picasso paintings then also a new section “ Pop to Present “ will open Nov 8 ..,Level 2 has Louise Bourgeois ( private view of her art + sculptures) , Nakuru “three scenes “ and the members lounge. We spent over 2 hours visiting.. Keep yourself open to different kinds of art!

Free and beautiful place. You can park your car In from of the gallery just for 2.5 per hour or 10 all the day. The you can go for a walk in the park. I really loved it.
Jesús Z — Google review
I doubt there’s a better free experience in Auckland other than the views of the city. This is a small but might museum, with a great combination of renaissance, European, Māori, contemporary Māori, kiwi, and international art. I was very impressed by how well it was organized and the helpfulness of the staff, who explained some of the intricacies of regalia and pounamu. The Māori gallery with wooden lodge statues was especially impressive. It’s special that the city wants to share its art publicly and freely to all comers.

Nestled conveniently across from the Auckland Art Gallery, Gow Langsford Gallery has established itself as a cornerstone of New Zealand's art scene since its inception in 1987. This esteemed gallery showcases an impressive roster of local talent, featuring renowned artists like Dick Frizzell and Max Gimblett among many others. Over the past three decades, it has hosted more than 300 exhibitions that not only highlight New Zealand's artistic prowess but also include international icons such as Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso.
Amazing exhibition spaces on Queen St. I think there should be more art display there.

Hubby and I visited the gallery in Feb 2016 and they had a exhibition called ONE DAY IN THE AFTERNOON OF THE GODS by artist Max Gimblett which we found very unusual. Also very expensive to buy.

War memorial
The Auckland War Memorial Museum is a grand Neoclassical building located on the highest point of Auckland Domain. It was built in 1929 as a tribute to New Zealand soldiers who fought in World War I. The museum boasts an extensive collection that spans from the first Polynesian settlers to modern times, showcasing New Zealand's history and natural heritage.
It is also known as Auckland Museum, and is one of New Zealand's most important museums and war memorials. Its neoclassical building constructed in the 1920s and 1950s, stands on Observatory Hill, the site being the remains of a dormant volcano. Museum collections concentrate on New Zealand history (and especially the history of the Auckland Region), natural history, and military history. Its collections are organised into three principal areas: documentary heritage (manuscripts, correspondence and other historical documents in archives, along with pictorial art); the major branches of the natural sciences; and human history (broadly, material culture). Among the areas of significant focus are Māori and Pacific cultures, the human and natural history of the Greater Auckland region, New Zealanders' involvement in global conflicts, and exploration and discovery. Very popular place, lots of tourists and locals. Keep an eye on your valuables. You can get here by public transport or car. We took the car and found it not a problem parking at a paid public car park. Fair bit of walking around this large building under shade. Wear comfy shoes, take water. Toilets available inside the building. Gift/souvenir shop available on site. Fee charged for entry. Book in advance. You can spend several hours here, depending on your interest. Great place for photography.
S V — Google review
I had a good experience at the war memorial museum, though it was somewhat dampened by the museum being approximately half-shuttered due to long-term repairs being made to the building and galleries. The ticket cost was reduced by 50% to compensate, which seems about right. Highlights included the Auckland exhibit, which was very colourful, progressive, and optimistic while also reflecting on more difficult parts of the past. I also really enjoyed the gallery about New Zealand’s flora and fauna. It was especially cool seeing reconstructions of giant flightless birds. WWII scholars will love the reconstructed Zero. When I went on a weekday, it was quite busy with many children, so just be aware!
Eric B — Google review
I would say this museum offers some of the best exhibitions in New Zealand. It features a wonderful collection showcasing Māori art, culture, and New Zealand history- from artefacts, paintings, and carvings to impressive life-sized pieces like the Māori waka (traditional canoe). The museum has also hosted incredible showcases such as the Guo Pei exhibition and, more recently, the DIVA exhibition in collaboration with the V&A in the UK. I travelled all the way from Wellington just to see DIVA! Tickets are reasonably priced (around $25) and include headsets, which is a great touch. The building itself is beautifully designed with sweeping ceilings and a bright, welcoming foyer that houses a café, restaurant, ticket counter, and access to toilets, a drinking fountain, and exhibition spaces. The layout is accessible and easy to navigate, and the facilities (including the toilets) are clean and well maintained. There’s also two floors of undercover parking located downstairs, accessible via lift. Parking payment is made at kiosks by card.
Daezjn — Google review
I highly recommend the Māori experience! It’s not a show but a sharing of culture. So don’t expect a long form of entertainment. I really enjoyed being part of it and being able to ask questions afterwards. The museum itself had a lot of items from many different wars and countries! It was interesting to see whole fighter planes up close! I’m only a bit disappointed that the main Māori exhibit is closed at the moment but it was definitely an informative time!
K W — Google review
They discounted my ticket because so many exhibits were closed but I was still disappointed. I really went out of my way to get here from the cbd and there were only a couple of interesting exhibits. Further, I went here on a weekend and experienced a lot of small children screaming and running around. I believe because admission is free for locals and parents were looking for a way to occupy their children. I enjoyed the war memorial exhibition, but was disappointed parents didn’t explain to their children that the exhibit deserved a little respect. I would recommend avoiding this museum when children are not in school.
Jennifer F — Google review
A well planned out museum for both young and old. The history of New Zealand's people both first nation and the rest are presented to us both visually and physically in items of historic value. Parking is limited especially during school holidays, weekends and public holidays. Excellent 👍 👌
Edward R — Google review
The views of the city from the outside of its building are breathtaking.. inside there is the ground level, level 1 and level 2 to visit. There is an entrance fee, at this moment, the fee has been reduced to $27 due to renovations in progress...Level 1 has a volcano display but their room of a volcano erupting simulation is so magnificently done ..a section of Mãori Natural History facts + display...many more. ... Level 2 is all about War and Remembrance with sections including New Zealand at War, Spitfire, WWI hall of memories, WW2 onwards,, WW2 hall of memories, and many more sections to visit.. All and All, we spent over 4 1/2 hours visiting and we still didn't see all completely.. this museum surpassed my expectations.. I wish they had possibilities of going a second day to fully visit the rest even if they charged a little more....it's a must to see ..
Monique B — Google review
This museum is pretty great and big enough that you could easily spend a whole day wandering. There is a large section that is geared towards kids, which is nice for folks with young kids. One downside is that this isn't a particularly walkable location to reach. We walked from the Parnell train stop and the sidewalks are so nonsensical that we gave up and walked across the grass. The reason that sidewalk business didn't lower the score I'm giving the museum is because the Māori Cultural Experience more than makes up for it. I'd rank this as an absolute MUST see/experience for anyone visiting. The folks from (or involved with) the Tūrongo Collective have crafted a truly memorable experience and I am grateful for having been able to see and experience it.

The Arts House Trust, Pah Homestead is a cultural gem housed in a beautifully restored 19th-century mansion with stunning views of One Tree Hill and the Manukau Harbour. The center features contemporary New Zealand art from an extensive private collection, which is rotated every four to six weeks. Visitors can enjoy lunch at the Homestead Cafe and explore the surrounding park.
The Arts House is a fantastic public space to explore and enjoy. With both indoor and outdoor art galleries, it offers a delightful experience for art lovers. It's a perfect spot to spend quality time with friends and family. We were fortunate to visit during the market, which made our time there even more special.

Cinnamon buns were pretty incredible...in fact all the food looked great. The coffee was top drawer. We hadn't booked so whilst there were tables vacant everywhere they were all reserved unfortunately. I'd like to go back with a booking on the balcony and have a proper meal. Get there early if you're not fussed with a booking.

One of the must visit locations in Auckland! Great for brunch cafe. We went there for lunch and very happy to be here. I will definitely bring my family and friends to come for a good break. The sandwiches are superb. The pastries are a bit too sweet for me. That is a good reason for me to return for tasting different baked. The staff was wondeful. He tried to get us a table even when we walked in. Excellent!
Chakorn T — Google review
I met my friends at Hill House Cafe and afterwards wandered into the art museum, where I noticed a beautiful piano. Caught by inspiration, I asked a staff member if I could play it. She paused, then said, “Only if you’re a professional pianist.” I replied, “No, I’m not a professional — but yes, I can play.” She frowned and insisted, “This piano is only for people who really can play.” It was one of those painfully awkward moments—standing in front of an instrument I longed to touch, only to be told I wasn’t good enough by someone else’s standards.
Angela K — Google review
**Gallery and Coffee Shop** This art gallery is complemented by a coffee shop downstairs, offering a unique blend of art and refreshments. **Food Quality** The cinnamon bun looked too sweet due to the icing, but it might be enjoyable for those who don't mind extra sweetness. **Ambiance** The space is pretty nice, although there are ongoing renovations that might affect the atmosphere. **Service and Staff** The staff are friendly, adding to the welcoming environment. **Coffee Quality** The coffee was average, not particularly noteworthy. **Pricing** Prices are a bit higher than your average coffee shop, which might be a consideration for budget-conscious visitors.

This award-winning gallery showcases a dynamic array of exhibitions and events throughout the year, ensuring that each visit offers something fresh and exciting. The architecture itself is a masterpiece, designed to harmonize with its stunning natural surroundings—lush native bush and breathtaking views that stretch towards the West Coast beaches.
Te Uru Waitākere Contemporary Gallery is an absolute gem! This is the place to come to if you want to experience new and contemporary art. They change their exhibits and installations often, to make every visit fresh and interesting. Your personal taste will inform the visit. Some contemporary installation are brilliantly inspired and inspiring, and showcases local New Zealand history and artists. Although I could appreciate the passion and effort that went into creating those works of art, I just didn't "get" some of the pieces. The building itself is an architectural marvel. It also offers beautiful outside views, displaying the wooded areas and the harbour as art itself. Well worth a visit!

Te Tuhi is an esteemed contemporary art gallery in East Auckland with a range of public programmes and educational resources. It hosts regular group and solo exhibitions, as well as special scholarships for postgraduate fine arts students. The gallery's sumptuous octagon-shaped auditorium is lovely, right across from Pakuranga plaza.
The best venue for kids birthday parties! We had booked their auditorium for our daughters first birthday party and the whole process from start to finish was seemless. We dealt with Taarn initially for the booking etc and on the day, Jing was at the reception. They were both so accommodating and great! Couldn't recommend them enough. Thw space itself is large so we were able to fit a big bouncy castle and the kids had ample play area ro run and use their ride ons. Comes with tables, chairs, kitchen - everything you need.

Well I am biased, but this is one of the exciting public non commercial galleries in Auckland. If your thing is contemporary Art, check out the website and get yourself there one of the best galleries in Auckland that you need to visit. It commissions and it curates plus it has offsite spaces, the Parnell train station. You have to visit if you’re coming to Auckland.

I Quite enjoyed the art displays, I went as part of a Primary school trip. The kids were able to do some paintings, they reviewed and interpreted a story with visual and audio performances. Got a better understanding of the displays on that day. I think they learnt an immense amount. Be good for children of all ages.

The Corban Estate Arts Centre is a hidden gem for people interested in fine arts and history. They have exhibitions from local artists, classes, and events that are always worth checking out. The venue is well-maintained with ample parking and great facilities.
Last week marked my inaugural visit to the art center, and I was utterly captivated by the enchanting cherry blossoms that greeted us at the entrance. The galleries proved to be a captivating wonderland, where we lost ourselves for a delightful three hours. We savored the serene beauty of cherry trees, basked in the warm embrace of sunlight, and reveled in the gentle caress of the spring breeze. What a splendid day for a leisurely city stroll!

Love what they have done to this place. Very close by. Each week there is something going on that serves the community. I will be very happy if the event organizer can encounter the public to use public transport to get here, espresso when there is an event. This has caused so much trouble for the residents at Corban Estate townhouses. Others, a very purpose built estate for rhe good of tangata whenua. Have attended so many events here as an individual, a group and as a parents and student. Love that the Te Pou theater 🎥 is also sitting here. Totally love it and the Michael church were summary have done their debut acting from. All located in this small corner.

Attended a weekend 2 day workshop on Nature Journaling was absolutely fantastic. Been there previously for a show which was stunning. Our tutor Molly was so helpful, enthusiastic and made it a lovely experience. Lots of renovation/construction but after covid it's so important to support the arts as it brings incredible value into our lives. Now more than ever. The Cafe served super delicious food from scratch with nice twists... brilliant coffee.

This place is a bit of a hidden gem for a mini outing or place to get art gifts. They have art from local artists on display as well as a gift shop selling art from local artists where they'll include a little pamphlet with information about the artist which always adds to a gift. They have events over the year and classes but I haven't experienced those so can't say too much about it.

Located in the heart of Parnell, the Parnell Gallery is housed in a historic building and spans two stories. The gallery showcases a carefully curated selection of contemporary fine arts including original works, sculptures, and limited edition prints. The main floor features monthly rotating exhibits while the street level space displays permanent inventory from artists across New Zealand. Visitors can also look forward to special events like artist Tim Jones' 'Tales of Light' exhibition.
We couldn't be more pleased with our Tony Ogle print from Parnell Gallery. We live in Aus so did the ordering & paying all online. The gallery quote included postage & the print arrived beautifully packed & very promptly, with no issues at all. Highly recommend - all aspects of their service & communication were "top notch" - thank you so much.

I purchased two Rika Nagahata prints from Parnell Gallery over a month ago: I was extremely impressed with this business! The staff (I dealt with Laura and Kata) are clearly very passionate and knowledgeable about the artists and the pieces of their work they exhibit. Customer service was "Gold Star" Kiwi level: Warm, professional and with fast & clear communication. My prints arrived in perfect condition with immaculate packaging and attention to detail. The added info' sheets about the artist in the folder along with the invoice and certificates of authenticity are a really nice added touch. Overall, I can honestly say that my customer experience here was so absurdly good on all levels that it itself felt like a piece of art. LOL 😂🤣 Highly recommended: 10/10 Cheers from Nick in Wellington : )

We are thrilled with our purchase.

Just been to view there latest exhibit. 60 years of Television in NZ. So nostalgic for me and i especially liked thumbing through the huge program directory book their. Fascinating as many of the programs i watched as a kid in the 60s and later were there, episode titles and dates aired. Highly recommended for avid TV fans and to see and hear how television started in this country from famous faces to what goes on behind the scenes. Also admired the architecture both outside and inside the studio. Great work. Regards, Ian Davies.

Nestled in the lively Viaduct Basin of Auckland, the New Zealand Maritime Museum Hui Te Ananui A Tangaroa offers an immersive journey into the rich maritime heritage of Aotearoa. This captivating museum showcases a diverse collection that chronicles New Zealand's deep-rooted connection with the sea, from ancient Pacific migrations to contemporary yachting innovations like those seen in the America's Cup.
We had been here several times to visit the museum but Today it's our first time to book for the sailing. Even if it's winter time it's still beautiful sailing out in the harbour for an hour. Crew are all awesome. No waiting time. I did book online so it's easier for us to just show our tickets. We did enjoy an hour of sailing. Surely we will be back by summer time. I highly recommend Maritime Museum Auckland to keep kids busy during school holidays. You can stroll at the museum after sailing which is nice with an interactive boat on display in the corridor. My child loves playing on it.

What a fabulous way to spend the day, wet or fine, the volunteers are super friendly knowledgeable and helpful. Now the displays physical and graphic are absolutely first class as are the theatre’s short films, Peter Blake especially good! All the exhibits are neat, and clean as are facilities, souvenir shop has some interesting items at reasonable prices. Of very special interest, ETHEL after a lot of hard toil by dedicated yaghtsmen Kevin & John to restore her from her depths of despair as a site seeing black fake PIRATE SHIP prior to total refit and refurbishment by the team! I would absolutely recommend not missing this well orchestrated easy to manage super interesting attraction to all discerning visitors and residents of Auckland city New Zealand! Arthur C. A fantastic way to spend a day! This museum tells the story of New Zealand's rich history and relationship with the sea, from Maori canoes to yachties to the merchant navy and their successful challenges to the America's Cup! I'd recommend a sailing around the harbour if you can, the volunteers who run the ships are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, really adding to the experience.
David J — Google review
A place to learn the early times of Maori sailing experiences & the migrations. There are canoes which were used and means used for whaling. You can also go for a heritage sailing vessel experience. All the exhibits have been placed carefully with enough information regarding them.
Bindya B — Google review
We booked the Ted Ashby sailing boat to try the experience and then walked around the museum afterward. The lady at reception was very kind and welcoming to both me and my daughter. She was friendly and made my daughter feel happy and special as a young visitor. However, during the boat trip, we felt like strangers—possibly because we were Arab international visitors. While we understand that we were new faces, we had hoped for a warmer and more inclusive atmosphere. Unfortunately, the uncomfortable feeling made me wish the trip would end before the scheduled time. I recommend that anyone planning to try the sailing boat bring some tea or coffee, a few snacks, and small games or activities for the kids, as the ride can get a bit boring—especially for younger children. The museum itself was informative, well-organized, and peaceful. The coffee shop was also nice, and the lovely lady working there was truly the highlight of the entire visit.
Bayan D — Google review
We have been to Maritime museums almost everywhere we go and truly this was one of the best! It not only showed the boats of the Maori but the history of the people as well. We found it to be very interesting. We took the free tour which was incredibly informative. I highly recommend visiting this museum when you are in Auckland.

As a huge America's Cup fan. There is only one thing I go to the Maritime Museum for. And that is my favorite America's Cup yacht and my hero. Sir Peter Blake. The Blue Water Black Magic exhibition is my go to. I have an obsession with the America's Cup and the campaign off San Diego in 1995 is the reason I fell in love with yacht racing. The presentation of what I think is New Zealand's greatest sporting achievement is second to none. I love how there is an interactive section with wheel, grinders and winches. The America's Cup replica placed up the top with models of the legendary America's Cup vessels is an awesome touch.

The gallery is easy to find just behind all the restaurants by the water and was right next to the hotel we stayed in. Fine selection of wood carvings, pottery, paintings and jewelry. Prices may seem high, but they are one of a kind works from local artists, and in the range you should expect. I have been looking for a perfect piece for my apartment for over 6 months. I remembered Mobile Art was next door to my old apartment and I had walked past admiring their pieces. They have a huge selection, I was originally only looking at 1 piece but another caught my eye. Diana and Michael were both incredibly helpful. During install of their pieces they were more than accommodating in moving another piece I already had. Diana is full of advice and doesn't push for a sale advising me a space I thought needed something was probably best to be bare so it wasn't too much in the space.

Being able to both hire and buy the art is great, as it gives my client's lots of options. Mobile Art Gallery also have a great App where you can take a photo of your wall and then place different pieces of art on it to help visualise what it will look like. Dennis and his team are very skilled at hanging the art you select, which makes such a difference to the finished look. I would recommend Mobile Art Gallery to anyone wanting to buy or hire artwork.

I just happened upon the mobile art gallery having dropped a friend off nearby. Also just happened to be thinking about needing colour and light in a small lounge. There happened to be a 50% off sale on! The staff were welcoming and helpful over several days. Tina created several scenarios inserting different paintings into a photo I had e mailed in. We ended up buying a painting from a NZ artist that was not on sale! And are delighted with it. We were able to take it home overnight to try it on the wall. A really positive experience for a couple of non arty people.

Our living space has been transformed by our Donna North original - not only do we love it, but every visitor to our home comments on the beautiful artwork. After having our home staged for sale. We needed some art to finish it off. We phoned Mobile Art and the next day Judy was here to hang the pieces. We were so impressed with the service. They were sent photos of the home, and her choice was just perfect. We felt the furniture and Art helped sell our large home for a premium. We had a sale in 5 weeks with a number of offers and after 45 couples visited the property. When we phoned on the Friday to give notice about our sale, they arrived on the Monday morning to pick it up. We were so pleased with the service and would recommend to our friends and would use them again. Thankyou Bev

Wander through a block of apartments and into what i determine as a home turned gallery, an exciting way finding! Anna introduced us to the works on show. Such a lovely little spot with great natural light, and the exhibition (Neighbours) was a treat. I visited for the work of Samuel Hartnett and stayed for the experience. Really nice stair runners, too.

A quaint art gallery that is nestled neatly at the corner of K' Rd and Newton with lots of beautiful art pieces. My friend and I visited on a Friday morning to see the solo art exhibit of a great Filipino NZ artist, Louie Bretaña's "Someone to watch over me". We were so happy with the decision to see that exhibit. The gallery has ample parking around and at the back and best of all, a nice and very accommodating person by the name of Benny attended to us.

MOTAT Museum of Transport and Technology is a sprawling 40-acre site in Auckland, New Zealand, featuring interactive zones and exhibits that showcase the country's history of innovation. Divided into two locations connected by a heritage tram, it houses an array of items including original 1877 pump house and Kiwi cars. The Great North Road location boasts a diverse collection of fire engines and vintage posters advertising rail travel in New Zealand.
While the first few halls were a bit boring, the Science and Technology Centre (hall 5) was really entertaining to both kids and adults. I was particularly impressed by the periodical table that lights up. The kids had so much fun charging the battery to unleash on that skewer of balls. The slide between the levels provided hours of entertainment. The food was surprisingly decent. The pies were solid and the smoked salmon bagel was better than the one I had at Best Ugly Bagels.
Brian L — Google review
Very good place for the family to spend the day. Plenty of parking and some great activities including the tram ride between the MOTAT locations. The aircraft in the hangers are wonderful as well as the steam pumping stations. There is even some old cars and a R100 rotary Mazda engined car for the lads.
Joe N — Google review
It was pretty good, it opens all year long except on Christmas Day. On that day there were ambulances there for people to explore the insides of the ambulances 🚑, also to experience CPR on plastics figures. We then explored the Science and Technology Centre, it was very nice and fun 🤩. We also rode the train to the Aviation Hall where there were lots of fun games to play. It was Fabulous day!!!
Nina Z — Google review
The aviation section is fantastic, the aircraft are in great shape and Preston an excellent environment with knowledgeable staff. The other section on cars, communication, etc is a bit more basic and more tailored to kids and school groups.
Mark F — Google review
After not having been there for over 40 years I was very disappointed. The Automotive side of things was all but nonexistent. The old buses and machines all gone except for one trolley bus . The science centre was interesting but it wasn’t if you know what I mean. The only up side was the aviation centre. 10 out of 10 for that.
Gary B — Google review
We had a brilliant time at MOTAT with our toddler — it’s one of the few spots in Auckland that truly caters for curious little explorers and keeps adults interested too. There’s a lot more than just old trains and planes here (though those are great too). The exhibitions rotate regularly — during our visit there was an interactive light and sound room, a science corner with bubbles and levers, and a hands-on play space that had our little one zooming around for ages. The aviation hall (MOTAT 2) has life-size aircrafts you can walk beneath — very cool, and surprisingly calming inside. TIP: Don’t miss the heritage tram ride! It runs between the two main MOTAT sites and was an unexpected hit with our toddler. You can hop on and off with your entry ticket. Also, check the website to see if it’s a live steam train day — it’s a huge drawcard and adds a whole extra layer of fun (and noise!) to the day. Parking was easy and free, and there’s a decent café with high chairs and lots of space for prams. Would I recommend it? Absolutely. MOTAT is one of the best toddler-friendly attractions in Auckland, and there’s always something new to see. Perfect for a few hours or a full day out.
Elena S — Google review
Have a lovely family weekend trip to MOTAT. While some of the exhibit are limited in number of items it fell suitable. Since the place is huge and a lot of stuff to see. Well worth the visit. Favorite bit includes the tram ride and aeroplane exhibit. It took us around 4 hours to see the whole place.
Nashaa N — Google review
What a great museum, cheap compared to others too. Love the variety of old and new tech too. Seeing the cars and aviation was amazing! The aeroplanes are technically at a second site which is a few Kms from the other,so we enjoyed the free tram ride (it was packed)

Non Solo Pizza, located in Parnell, Auckland, has been a beloved spot for locals and tourists since 1997. The restaurant offers a charming indoor-outdoor dining experience with a beautiful courtyard and sophisticated main bar. Owned by Antonio Crisci and Vivienne Farnell, the pizzeria and wine bar serves updated versions of Southern Italian favorites alongside an extensive menu of Italian fare.
Our number one go to place in Parnell. Awesome Italian food from appetizers to main to dessert. You just don’t wanna miss any of the courses. It would be otherwise incomplete and short changing ourselves from a perfect dining experience. Wait staff is super friendly and attentive. The Courtyard is cherry on top. Thank you non solo team!

They made a delicious pasta out of simple ingredients, which was impressive. The Prosciutto Crudo pizza was generously topped and really tasty too. The calamari could’ve been a bit crispier, but dipping it in the tangy mayo balanced out the richness and made it quite enjoyable

Food was delightful. Every single dish was delicious. I took my best friend out for her special birthday dinner and she absolutely loved. I had the porchetta, it’s was super crispy and sauce was beautiful, but the beef carpaccio and the carrots was just amazing, the highlight of the night. Service was good as always, all staff super friendly and helpful.

Absolutely delicious food and decent service. The food couldn’t have been better absolutely chefs kiss as always! Service was good though was a bit disappointed that when the waitress poured our water she spilt quite a bit over the table and said she’d be back to clean it up but never did so we ended up using a serviette. Atmosphere was nice. Overall a really good experience. Definitely recommend if you want good food! Just bear in mind that it is pricey

JACK WAS A LEGEND! From the moment I walked in with a massive cake and he asked if he could take it and put it in the fridge for me, to the absolute banter in helping us decide what to eat and drink to even grabbing the cake and putting candles in it then singing along with my friends, his service absolutely made my birthday elite. Thank you Jack! And the food and drinks were so yum, will 100% be back!

With multiple locations in Auckland, including Parnell, it's a budget-friendly option offering a wide-ranging menu suitable for families. While the restaurant can get busy and noisy at times, the food is described as incredible by patrons who enjoyed dishes like porterhouse steak with mushroom sauce and authentic Italian entrees such as beef ragu and carbonara.
It's been 2 decades since last in Parnell but great to see good food & great hospitality hasn't changed. Greeted & seated immediately, friendly staff, varied menu range, very generous portions. We found our server attentive though she struggled a bit with dietary options. Master 6, enjoyed his pizza 🍕 surprisingly wasn't wood-fired but still very tasty incl the garlic bread & the wedges was bang on beautiful! Enjoyed the relaxed dress- code atmosphere. Highly recommend, we will be returning. Merci

I have not been back here since 2004! It was a regular place for my group of friends back than because the food was great. Unfortunately even though the service was exceptional the food was average this time especially the seafood chowder which was more like a soup and no seafood my husband was very disappointed. Overall 3/5 for the food, service was very good and price was reasonable.

Absolutely devine! Staff were great and the food was amazing! We ordered the pancakes and the chicken tower and what a treat! The pancakes were fluffy and beautiful. Lots of fruits that were fresh and taste so great. The maple syrup that came with it complimented the dish so well. For presentation of food 10/10. Coffee was good temperature was maintained. But the disappointing part is bread was too hard in our both the dish. Somewhere chewy. Veggies in the dish are not that cooked well. But cafe is always busy Staff are nice

Great selection of cabinet food with plenty to choose from. I tried the cheese and chive scone—packed with flavour and (I swear) a hint of sweet chilli or chutney that made it extra wonderful. My coffee was consistent and great—I enjoyed it so much I had two. The space is cool, busy, and popular, with loads of seating. Only downside: there wasn’t much customer service, so the experience felt a little impersonal.

A pleasant café in the heart of Parnell. I ordered the magic mushrooms, which were excellent (and nicely presented). I did not have time for dessert unfortunately but everything in the cabinet was mouth-watering. The slices are huge! I highly recommend!

Really enjoyed this place. Got the big breakfast (pictured) and a cappuccino. Couldn't fault anything, although note that the online menu hasn't been updated to reflect the menu in person. Prices are reasonable too and the food was delicious.

I had the fried chicken tower for $25. I swapped out the croissant for fries….which ended up being curly fries. The service was fantastic, the food average. The fried chicken was oily and tasteless. It lacked seasoning as with the rest of the food. The corn side salad and pickled cabbage was average and the dipping sauce like everything else lacked seasoning, depth and flavor. The hot chocolate was fantastic!
B R — Google review
Service is good. Ordered pork belly sourdough, soft shell w/ poached eggs and smoked salmon. Portion is big. Pork belly is too greasy for me in the morning even served with Korean sauce.
Katherine Z — Google review
Came to WF for a late lunch (as other cafes had stopped serving hot food). Very friendly staff. Great menu choice (including vegetarian options) and delicious green eggs on toast. Took a banana/choc muffin to-go which was huge and so fresh, great texture. Staff were kind enough to give me re-heating instructions and a stick of butter to enjoy it with later! Spacious, light atmophere; toilets available; no wi-fi.

KIWA ART is a great place to buy authentic carvings from New Zealand artists. The owner is very personable and knowledgeable, so you won't be disappointed.
Had our greenstone necklace strings beautifully and carefully repaired at this store ♥️. My partner had a wonderful experience with the friendly and attentive staff. They offer a lovely variety of stunning gems and unique souvenirs—perfect for gifts for your loved ones!

Merchant was helping other customers & acknowledged me as I browsed. He was about to carry a large art piece to the customer's car but before he left he opened the case I was looking at & left me alone in the shop....such trust, so refreshing! I purchased a beautiful pendant by Michael Giradin, a one of a kind piece. Parnell is a charming suburb of Auckland. Definitely worth a visit. Be sure to stop by Kiwi Art for genuine Maori art.

My wife and I visited Kiwi Art on July 5th, 2025, and we were really impressed with the wide range of art that was available. We were so happy to be shopping at a business that offered quality objects, as we were getting tired of seeing the usual tourist souvenirs. Carolyn (I think that was her name?) was great to work with. She answered many questions for us in regards to the art, as well as how to transport the art back to Canada. We are very pleased with our selections. Thank you Kiwi Art for your professionalism and expertise.

Andrew (great name btw) fixed the binding on my and my partner's Greenstone Necklace. Didnt have to wait too long to get them both done and it is well priced. Amazing gentleman to have a chat with too if you're waiting around the area. His shop has a lot of options and all great quality. Honestly the stories is what sold me 😄. Highly recommended! Thanks again Andrew! Until the next time I pop by! I'll try get my coffee quicker, haha 😂.

Thanks for a great Pottery for Beginners course with Jino. So enjoyable that I've rebooked for the next term! Jino is very talented and a great tutor, and the class of six is an easy mix. Delighted. Another year, another review for the Pottery for Beginners course. Jino is so lovely and friendly and such a great teacher that I just keep coming back to learn more!

Uxbridge Arts & Culture is a wonderful local attraction in Howick. They provide a diverse range of classes, from many forms of art, exercise and add live cultural performances, and exhibitions in the gallery. There is also a splendid cafe which has delicious food and an eclectic atmosphere with its period furniture. This modern, we'll appointed facility is well worth a visit in Uxbridge Road. HOWICK.

Attended the beginners' pottery class for five lessons and it was a lovely experience. Our teacher explained as best as he could and he also has an amazing background with pottery. He helped out with my almost disastrous looking pottery 😅 but I managed to make a few that looked alright. The wait for firing the pottery wasnt too long either around 5 days. Will definitely think about attending other classes or continuing practicing pottery.

Really enjoyed the acrylic paint pouring workshop last weekend. We all created two unique pieces and received in depth info on materials etc that work best, so we could give it a go at home too. The instructor was welcoming and very helpful. Relaxed atmosphere in a spacious workshop room with lots of art on the wall to admire, great workshop location!

My 9-year-old daughter thoroughly enjoyed the Drawing & Sketching class (Tue 3:45-5:15) with Maree. Learning to depict objects with pencil sketching added a technical dimension to her artistic skills. It was a great class for a 9-year-old who loves drawing, providing more advanced content rather than simplistic children's drawings. This class is highly recommended for kids who love drawing and want to boost their skills.

Nestled within a charming building that echoes the vibrant spirit of the '80s, Pineapple on Parnell is a hidden gem in Auckland that you won't want to overlook. Marked only by its distinctive brass pineapple doorknocker, this lounge and bar invites you into an opulent world where moody ambiance meets exquisite cocktails. The interior boasts dramatic dark green walls adorned with plush velvet curtains and cozy leather booths, creating an inviting atmosphere perfect for late-night gatherings.
Have been a few times, most recently on Friday night. Service was super fast, the cocktails are all beautifully presented and strong. Love the decor too.

We were doing a tour of 'secret' and trendy cocktail bars that evening, and this was one of our stops. Easy to get to on the bus from CBD, and a really classy spot. We loved the decor and high class jazzy feel to it. It was quiet and comfortable. Free bowl of pretzels I thought was a nice touch. We enjoyed two VERY tasty pineapple themed house cocktails, around $48 total.

I visited here on my last night in Auckland after seeing a show at Spark Arena. The staff were all really attentive even though it was a pretty busy nice. The place was decorated beautifully and there was plenty of places to sit. I had the Kawasawa cocktail and I really enjoyed it! All of their signature cocktails looked fantastic and it was so difficult to choose.

An atmosphere of ease, friendliness, and fun. Here you can meet interesting people, make new friends, and simply have a good time. Live music, an interesting themed evening, or just a friendly chat with the bartender—all this creates a unique atmosphere that makes you want to come back again and again. This is exactly what the bar I visited recently was like. Excellent interior, professional bartender, delicious drinks, and a friendly atmosphere—all this made my evening unforgettable. I can confidently recommend this bar to anyone looking for a place to relax and enjoy life.

This place has such a comfy atmosphere, the music isn't so loud that I need to shout, I can still have a conversation and enjoy the live music. The drinks are very sophisticated and have interesting flavours. I like the fact that it's unassuming and they good with topping up water/pretzels so you don't get wasted. I also like that they do tasters.

Tuitui Museum Bistro & Café offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere with friendly service. The seating is comfortable, and the space allows for a relaxed dining experience. The food is served promptly and beautifully presented. Dishes like the chicken pot pie and duck tacos are described as delicious comfort food and absolutely scrumptious, making it a delightful place to have lunch during a museum visit. The modern environment is nicely decorated, providing an enjoyable setting for dining.
Had a lovely break here for lunch while visiting the fantastic collections of Auckland Museum. Food was fresh and tasty, with many lunch and brunch options. Quite an extensive kids menu as well. We didn’t have much of a wait but came slightly later (1:30pm) but the space is quite small so I imagine it fills up pretty quickly during peak times.

We visited on a Thursday around lunchtime. The food was satisfactory, but the service was disappointing. We had to wait quite a while, and the front-of-house staff did not seem very attentive. Additionally, the beverage server was not friendly at all, which significantly detracted from the overall experience.

We have lunch during our visit to museum. It was busy afternoon but luckily we managed to get table. Staffs are friendly and helpful. Modern environment with nicely decorated. Foods are good. I was very happy with charred chicken skewers with roti and my wife enjoyed her seafood chowder. My son was very excited to have his Trex plate but the portion of dinosaur sandwich was too small that he had to order another meal to make his tummy happy 😆. Overall we are happy with our visit.

After visiting the Bloodsucker exhibition, we ordered lunch and were impressed by the creativity of the kids’ Bloodsucker Platter. However, I was quite surprised to see syringes being used as part of the meal presentation, especially for a children’s dish. The syringes had faded measurement markings, indicating multiple uses, and the ink from these markings is not food-safe. Additionally, the syringes were clearly labeled “single use only,” raising concerns about their suitability for serving food. They also may not be made of food-grade material or designed to withstand high temperatures. I brought this to the attention of the waitress, but no action was taken. I strongly urge the cafe to discontinue the use of syringes for this dish and to inform other customers about this issue.

Fabulous breakfast in a beautiful light space. The three of us agree. Very reasonable prices. Perfect scrambled egg on ciabatta with delicious garlic mushrooms. Coffee 10 out of 10. Lovely and professional staff. I am not a habitual reviewer. I only bother when I am very impressed! I would come back for breakfast when I’m next in Auckland. Try it out and visit the museum at the same time.

We had lunch here today & the first thing that impressed us was the friendly service. We were welcomed like old friends, which was a very pleasant start to our meal. Seats were comfy & the table not too close to others. It took very little time between ordering & arrival of food & it was beautifully presented. Our choices were the chicken pot pie & the duck tacos. The pie was complete comfort food, tasty, hot & nutrious. The duck tacos were absolutely scrumptious. I could eat them every day for the rest of my life! The hoisin had a kick of chilli/spice which balanced beautifully with the duck & salady bits. A very delicious meal experience. Thank you team Tuitui!

Amazing place, beautiful gardens and sculptures. Definitely give yourself a an hour or two to take everything in. The indoor gallery was sensory overload, but in a good way 😅 just so much to take in all at once.

This is a unique family outing. The kids enjoyed the quirky art and open spaces, while the gardens provided an interesting backdrop. Some pieces were genuinely thought-provoking. Worth a visit if you're in the vicinity and looking for something different. Do check online for potential ticket discounts beforehand. Overall, a pleasant experience, but not a destination I'd go significantly out of my way for.
Binky T — Google review
We had seen Sculptureum advertised and made it our mission as a birthday treat to visit from the south island. Having been to a handful of other sculpture parks and being very interested in sculpture, I would say we had certain expectations. The place is set out in two halves with a lovely shop and restaurant in the middle. We were recommended to visit the front outdoor area first. A beautifully laid out garden that twists and turns with different areas within it to reveal art. However it would be fair to say we were extremely disappointed by what was in there, very generic items and an awful lot of boards with art quotes on. More of a quotetorium!)keep reading!) Having come through there we came out a little flat, and not so hopeful about the indoor gallery, but we were wrong. This included a large and eclectic array of mostly but not exclusively 3d objects. Fascinating and interesting, and we would highly recommend it. If you are expecting to see the usual names, don’t go, but if you are open to something else, I’m sure there is something for everyone there. I would liken it to the victorians who would go on the grand tour and buy art they liked. That seems to be what has happened here and it is quite refreshing and a little bit different. Go see for yourself.
Dave T — Google review
It was an awesome & very calming experience. Great weather for meandering around the palm groves to admire all the brilliant sculptures. Finally inside to view the art shop & gallery then more fun gardens for both adults and children outside. A delicious Rośe to top it off! Highly recommend

Sculptureum Matakana is hands down one of the most captivating art destinations I’ve experienced in New Zealand! This enchanting blend of sculpture gardens, galleries, and lush landscapes offers a feast for the senses, leaving visitors in awe at every turn. The sprawling grounds feature over 300 artworks seamlessly integrated into vibrant tropical gardens. From bold contemporary pieces to whimsical classical sculptures, the diversity is astounding. The mirror and reflection based installations were a standout playing with light and perspective in the most mesmerizing way. One of my favorite spots was the vineyard-facing sculpture area, where gleaming metallic artworks cast dreamy reflections against the greenery. The indoor galleries are equally impressive, showcasing vivid avian sculptures, surreal paintings, and thought-provoking modern art. The staff were incredibly welcoming, offering insights into the stories behind key pieces (like the giant pink snail an unexpected highlight!). Practical tips: ✔ Allow 2–3 hours to fully explore—every corner holds a new surprise. ✔ The onsite café is perfect for a coffee break amid the art. ✔ Photography lovers will adore the interactive installations. The only "downside"? I didn’t want to leave! The ticket price is reasonable for the quality and scale of the exhibits, and the gift shop offers unique artistic souvenirs. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or simply seeking inspiration, Sculptureum delivers magic. Already planning my return!

Of Hand & Heart Art Gallery is a small yet impressive gallery filled with unique and inspiring art pieces. The owner, Rick, is a dedicated artist himself, specializing in pottery. Visitors can find gorgeous artworks from New Zealand and other places, including pieces created by Japanese artists. The variety of art may be overwhelming at first, but each piece is mesmerizing upon closer inspection. Customers appreciate the helpful and interesting assistance from Rick without feeling pressured to make a purchase.
I am a long time supporter of this unique and very special business. Now living in the UK, I return to NZ every year and never fail to visit Of Hand & Heart Art Gallery. The reasons are numerous although if I choose just two reasons they are the skill, knowledge and enthusiasm of Rick for his craft of pottery and the other reason is the quality and range of art work on sale. The challenge is always to leave the gallery without making a purchase. Small businesses deserve our support and our purchases in order for us to retain the option of buying from the artist and other artist who have work in this gallery. Photo of recent purchases.

I love finding 'hidden' Gems of a shop, or restaurant or an art gallery, and today I was lucky to encounter [of Hand & Heart] art gallery - it was raining, and I followed a trail of yellow brick road hidden between two cafes out of whim, and it was a magical experience getting away from hustle and bustle of everyday life, stepping into a world of it's own. Owner Rick (shown in photos) was not just a gallery owner, he was a creator of art himself and showed us various works he created - my mom loved elegant hues and organic shapes of his pottery, some created with very clay from building's foundation, adding story and life into his works. If you chance upon a yellow brick road when you visit Warkworth, don't hesitate to follow it - it will be magical.
