Open air museum
The Hakone Open-Air Museum, established in 1966, aims to blend nature and art seamlessly. It spans across 77,000 acres of Japanese countryside and showcases an extensive collection from renowned international and local artists such as Miro, Rodin, and Yoshitatsu Yanagihara. The museum features outdoor sculptures by notable artists like Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth set against the backdrop of Hakone's lush hills.
We arrived at the Hakone Open-Air Museum with just 30 minutes to spare before closing—and while the staff at the ticket counter kindly warned us that it wasn’t ideal, I couldn’t pass up the chance to see Japan’s first open-air museum. So, with running shoes on and camera gear in hand, we dashed in at 4:30 PM and made the most of every minute. Despite the time crunch, we managed to see a surprising amount. The kids loved the interactive sculptures, and we snapped some fantastic photos with our tripod as we raced through the grounds. It was a whirlwind, but totally worth it. If you’re short on time, don’t skip it—just be ready to move fast! The museum itself is a stunning fusion of nature and art, with over 120 sculptures spread across beautifully landscaped gardens and lawns. Established in 1969, it features works by legends like Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, and even Pablo Picasso, whose pieces are housed in a dedicated two-story pavilion. There’s also a colorful stained-glass tower called the Symphonic Sculpture that you can climb for panoramic views of the park and surrounding mountains. One tip: find the entrance ahead of time. We spent nearly 10 minutes wandering around trying to locate it, which ate into our already limited time. The museum is just a short walk from Chokoku-no-Mori Station on the Hakone Tozan Railway, but signage can be subtle, especially if you’re in a rush. If you can, give yourself at least a couple of hours to explore. There’s a foot bath, kids’ play areas, cafes, and rotating indoor exhibitions that deserve more than a quick glance. But even in a sprint, the Hakone Open-Air Museum left a lasting impression—and I’m so glad we didn’t miss it.

A wonderful open air museum. A great experience walking around through the gardens and enjoying the nature , the art works and the weather. Because the museum is in open air you need to choose for a day with good weather ( not a rainy day ). We especially enjoyed the Picasso Pavilion ! A very clean place and we suggest to spend approx 3 hours for the visit. By the way if you guys are a little bit tired there is a nice cozy coffee shop , with great Italian Coffee , ice cream , soft drinks and sandwiches. A huge parking space on the spot which cost 500 yen - we came by car. A highly recommended place if you are in Hakone. Enjoy !

Wow, wow, wow. They shouldn't call this a museum. It is an art gallery extraordinaire. Beautiful environment, many external installations allow for interaction. The Picasso and other indoor galleries are equally impressive. Child friendly. Lovely places to eat and drink as well as a top class shop. A must visit.
Craig B — Google review
The museum was one of my highlights of a visit to Japan, it is a unique experience with many art pieces in beautiful tranquil surrounds as you wander the gardens with the backdrop of the mountains. There are also some kid friendly areas including the climbing net where many children will spend at least an hour, the maze, and then when tired the pockeT area. Make sure to enjoy the foot Onsen that will rest those weary feet. There is a self serve ticket machine at the entrance so no need to wait in line.
Russell K — Google review
Simply stunning. A lot of thought and effort has gone into making this place special. Loved the mini Picasso museum in the middle. Top tip - try to arrive as close to 9am as possible to avoid the hoards of day trippers coming in from Tokyo
Stephen R — Google review
One of the most incredible museums I’ve ever visited! The installations are so huge and fun to walk through. Even on a cold rainy and snowy day we walked the entire grounds and saw each exhibit. There’s a sweet hot foot soak area about mid way through where there is also a gift shop and little cafe. Don’t miss going inside the tower with all the stained glass, it’s other worldly.
Lauren K — Google review
There are a couple of ticket machines to the left side of the entrance, if you’d like to skip the line. Overall it’s an interesting outdoor museum. It was nice to walk around even in the rain. The gift shops are also very nice
Lei Z — Google review
Fantastic art exhibits, the Picasso building houses a rather large collection of several of his art mediums, easily worth the 2000 yen to see the many outdoor sculptures. A wonderful couple of hours.

Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Hakone Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine located in a lush lakeside setting. It features a small museum and is known for its iconic red torii gate that can be spotted from the waters of Lake Ashi. The shrine is believed to bring luck in battle and has been revered by prominent historical figures like shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu and ruler Minamoto no Yoritomo.
It is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Kanagawa Prefecture. The torii gate by the lake is one of the most Instagram-worthy spots for a photo. But be prepared for a long queue, especially on weekends when it gets extremely crowded. The Hakone Shrine itself is huge, with many areas to explore. I recommend setting aside at least half a day to fully enjoy the experience and not miss anything.
Tanzim K — Google review
Hakone-jinja, located on the shores of Lake Ashi in Hakone, is one of Japan’s most iconic Shinto shrines. Surrounded by towering cedar trees and misty mountains, the shrine exudes a sense of peace and spirituality that blends beautifully with its natural surroundings. Its most famous feature is the bright red torii gate that stands partly submerged in the lake, creating a striking and photogenic scene that has become a symbol of Hakone. For photographers, Hakone-jinja offers multiple perspectives. The lakeside torii is best captured at sunrise or sunset, when the soft light enhances the colors and reflections on the water. The approach to the shrine, lined with ancient cedar trees and stone lanterns, provides atmospheric compositions that highlight both nature and tradition. Seasonal changes also bring unique opportunities—cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, fiery leaves in autumn, and occasional snow in winter. Beyond photography, the shrine is a place of worship and cultural importance, attracting visitors who come to pray for good fortune, safe journeys, and harmony. The serene environment invites slow exploration, making it a rewarding stop for both spiritual reflection and creative inspiration. Hakone-jinja is more than just a shrine—it is a meeting point of history, culture, and natural beauty. For travelers and photographers, it captures the essence of Hakone and remains a must-visit landmark in Japan.

Little bit of a climb up the steps, but we'll worth it. There are a few shrines throughout the area, but this is the largest of the bunch. You can go up and make your offerings. Set in the forest, very beautiful. The cedar trees are humongous, just amazing. The parking lot is not that far away. There is also a small path you can follow instead of the steps. It's just so peaceful and scenic, a must stop.
Anthony C — Google review
An absolutely beautiful and serene shrine. I loved how the tall trees towered over our heads and the way the green of the forest mixed with the redish orange colors of the shrine. The architecture was simply stunning. And of course the torii gate on the lake is the main celebrity here. Just know that there’s a crazy long line to get a picture with it at all times, some saying it was an hour of waiting. We didn’t wait, we decided to admire the main part of the shrine instead. Don’t forget to get some water from the shrine spring, it’s said to bring good luck.
Cody P — Google review
#throwback2016 Tucked between mistdrenched cedars and the still waters of Lake Ashi, Hakone Jinja feels less like a shrine and more like an accidental portal to Studio Ghibli. The iconic red torii gate, emerging from the lake like a spiritual submarine hatch, is Instagram bait but somehow still sacred. Founded in 757 AD, back when Fuji was still updating her firmware, the shrine once drew samurai warriors seeking divine WiFi before battle. These days, it draws influencers in linen shirts whispering “so zen” before posting a Reel with lofi beats. The walk up through ancient trees is calming except when the fog gets too thick and you start questioning your life choices and the location of your travel group. Bonus: there’s also a side shrine for a nineheaded dragon deity. Because oneheaded dragons are just too basic for Hakone. 1200 years of vibes and foggy drama, blessed. 📸 Tip: Come early morning for mist, mystery, and minimal humans. Otherwise, enjoy the queue to touch a gate.
The G — Google review
Definetely a must stop! Regretted not doing the tour around the lake which included seeing so many more Tori gates. Beautiful place to visit and very spiritual.
Yana — Google review
Beautiful shrine and definitely worth going, however it’s very busy on most days and the wait to take a photo with the tori gate and lake will be around 20-40 minutes
Alissa L — Google review
Very busy shrine but in a beautiful area. There are a few trails and small areas off to the side where you can't find some peaceful moments of reflection. The amulet and goshuin areas were very busy but at least efficient. They have a good sized bathroom facility that unfortunately was in pretty rough shape during our visit. While the grounds are beautiful many of the buildings are undergoing some repairs and scaffolding abounds. Overall if you are in Hakone you will visit it is sort of the point but I hope it's not the only shrine you see in Japan.

Nature & Parks
Hakone Gōra Park is a stunning Western-style hillside botanical garden located in Hakone. This French-style landscape park offers a picturesque retreat throughout the year, showcasing vibrant azaleas and cherry blossoms in spring, blooming hydrangeas around the central fountain in summer, and a breathtaking display of red and orange maple leaves in autumn. During winter, the park transforms with enchanting Christmas lights. Visitors can also enjoy scenic views of Mt.
A lovely little park—small but charming. Although it’s already winter and most of the flowers and trees are dormant, I can imagine the garden looking even more beautiful in spring and summer. That said, even in winter, the park still has its own appeal. The fountain is elegant, and there are plenty of cute and picturesque corners to explore. It was a peaceful and enjoyable walk, and I appreciated its quiet beauty despite the season.
Ian L — Google review
Enjoy the silence and peacefulness in the Gora Park! Stopped by as part of the Hakone Free Pass and the place didn’t disappoint! Grab a coffee or lemonade and sit down by the fountain, walk in the green house or just wander around - this place is energising and making the hot weather more bearable!
Dimi R — Google review
A very well layed out park with French origins. You don’t have to walk miles to see things but there is much to see and enjoy. Like any park or garden it does depend on the seasons as to what you see. The park is in Hakone high up in the hills which creates for a very unique climate and therefore an opportunity to see things which you would not see elsewhere at that time of year. It has a really interesting craft centre, properly organised and run to quite a high level. The shops and restaurants are not tacky in any way or ridiculously expensive. Loved the rose ice cream real value for money especially with the coupon at the entrance! Toilets and other facilities are way up to standard nothing old and just about to break or smelly!! And clean!!! Easy to get to with ample parking areas. Station nearby if needed!
Scobie-john L — Google review
Beautiful , small area. Lovely roses and gymnosperm varieties. Glass house / green house should have more varieties.
Anuradha J — Google review
Cute little park with free entrance if you have Hakone freepass. Right next to Hakone open air museum. We had a lovely afternoon tea with a rose theme in one of their cafés.
Evelina — Google review
Small but charming park with many pretty flowers. It is within 5 minute walking distance of the cable car station. Has a ‘treasure box’ with a stamp for children to stamp their books. Closes at 5pm
Luggage O — Google review
Rustic park with an old charm. Picturesque location worth visiting if you enjoy gardens and greenery.

One of most beautiful parks. And not only for Hakone. It not requires any additional words. Just come and see... Tea ceremony also recommended to visit.

Owakudani, also known as Hell Valley, is a geothermic site in Hakone that offers stunning views of Mt. Fuji and the surrounding area. Visitors can take the Hakone Tozan Railway or local buses from Hakone-Yumoto Station to reach this forested and mountainous area. One of the main attractions here is the opportunity to eat black eggs boiled in hot springs, which are said to add seven years to your life for each egg consumed.
The visitor centre comprises of much needed amenities as well as a souvenir shop. Everyone and their mother is buying black eggs (4 for ¥500). If you are wondering where do people get the black soft cream from, it's from a shop (極楽茶屋) further south from the visitor centre, so don't waste time here.
Alvin L — Google review
We had an excellent experience at Owakudani. The landscape is incredible—sulfur vents steaming all around, the smell of the volcano in the air, and if you’re lucky with clear weather, amazing Mt. Fuji views. The highlight was trying the famous black eggs—warm, tasty, and fun to share (plus the local legend of adding seven years to your life makes it even better). Shops and facilities were clean, staff were kind, and everything felt organized. Truly a unique stop in Hakone. Pro tips: • Weekdays are calmer → much less crowded and easier to enjoy the views. • Check the weather → Mt. Fuji is visible only on clear days; worth planning around. • Black eggs → sold in 5-packs, perfect for sharing with family/friends. • Bring a jacket → it’s cooler and windy up here compared to Hakone town. • Ropeway check → sometimes it closes due to volcanic gases or strong winds, so confirm before heading up.
Giovanni A — Google review
This area was originally called the "Valley of Hell" (地獄谷), but was renamed "Owakudani" (大湧谷, literally "Great Boiling Valley") after Emperor Meiji visited. It’s a volcanic landscape with continuous volcanic gas emissions that fill the air with a strong sulfur smell. Give the local specialty, the black eggs, a try, although they taste just like regular boiled eggs.
I-Hsiang C — Google review
This is my second time visiting Hakone. Just a simple stroll around the area this time. I took the Hakone Tozan Railway from Hakone-Yumoto Station to Gora Station, then continued on the Hakone Tozan Cable Car to Sōzan Station. From there, I bought a one-way Hakone Ropeway ticket (¥2000), which allows unlimited stops along the route. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t great this time and very misty, so the view from the ropeway wasn’t clear. Still, it was a relaxing ride through the cool mountain air.
Poppy — Google review
Tourist Tourist Tourist, we were there during the summer and the Japanese school holiday. There place is full to the brim. Restaurants are packed. No place to sit at all. The top there, sulfur smell is quite strong. Got to the try their famous black egg. The was a saying that you eat one black egg, you will be 7 years younger !
Then W — Google review
We were so excited and hungry on our Klook bus tour after arriving to Hakone Ōwakudani Valley. We ordered 4 black eggs pack for ¥500, they accept cash only. Although they tasted like normal boiled eggs it was still fascinating to eat the famous black eggs. We were told eating a black egg prolongs your life 7 years! My favourite was taking the Hakone Ropeway Ōwakudani cable car to see the views of the volcanic valley. It was very windy day and cool seeing it in person.
Jenny T — Google review
Lot of volcanic activity can be seen, from the view point. Main attraction here is the black egg which should give you 7 years of life. Inside of the egg is completely normal, even the taste is close to normal. The souvenir shop accept credit card, but the counter with black eggs which is inside of the shop takes only cash, quite lack of logic.
Michal T — Google review
Stunning view . Landscapes like iv've never seen before and nice view of mount fuji. Make sure to preorder tickets for the tour.

Bakery & Table Hakone is a charming cafe and restaurant located by the picturesque Lake Ashi. The establishment offers a delightful selection of sweet and savory pastries, as well as a menu featuring delectable burgers and sandwiches. Guests can enjoy stunning views of the lake while indulging in an array of freshly baked bread, cakes, jams, dips, sauces, and beverages available at the take-out bakery on the ground floor.
Omg I’m going to forever be dreaming of this cafe. HIGHLY recommend. Tried the curry bread, melon pan, matcha horn and the custard tart. BEST curry bread and custard tart of my life, the melon pan and matcha horn were also sooo delicious. Everything was so melt in your mouth and quality and flavours were insane. Wish we could’ve tried everything - do yourself a favour and get some baked goods from here!! Thank you so much!
Georgia F — Google review
Loved this stop during my time in Hakone. The bakery had some many amazing options it was hard to choose - I went for a white chocolate and macadamia bread and a potato bread and both were excellent. I also got a matcha latte with oat milk, which was also excellent, albeit a little pricey (1400¥)! The staff were super friendly, and helpful for me they speak good English too. And the environment with quiet background music and a view over the lake were wonderful.
Kate B — Google review
The café spans three floors, with the first floor being a bakery. I didn't try any of the baked goods, but they looked tasty. The third floor has a lovely view of the lake and is very peaceful. I had a soy latte which was decent, though the soy milk was a bit overpowering. Service was really high-quality and polite. Prices were high and reflected the location and quality of service.
Aris — Google review
Beautiful views from a nice bakery. The bakery downstairs has many breads to pick from. There are table on floor 2 and 3 where you can sit and enjoy a coffee with some breads from downstairs. Recommend the cheesecake and affogato. The chocolate cake was a little dry. Views of the lake and Peace Tori are great. And on a clear day you can see Mount Fuji.
A M — Google review
Varieties of pastries ranging from sweet to savory! It’s a bit of a hustle to find a place to sit. As soon as you enter, you’ll find the bakery area, which is self-service (pick what you want with a tray), then proceed to pay (cash or card). However, there’s no seating on that floor—seating is available upstairs but you must order at least 1 drink . On the second floor and above, you can order drinks or coffee and, hopefully, find a place to sit and enjoy both your pastry from downstairs and your drink. Despite the hustle, we enjoyed what we ate and drank. And if you happen to find a place to sit upstairs, you will get the view of the lake.
Home K — Google review
We arrived late afternoon and the Bakery was essentially sold out, which was disappointing. We ended up on the 3rd floor, where the prices for coffee and matcha were excessively high. We should have sat in the 2nd floor, as the prices were more reasonable, which we noted on the way out. Views were spectacular, can’t fault that. But ultimately, not worth the money. Matcha latte was solid, but not amazing. Cheesecake was as expected. Not bad, not great
Sally L — Google review
This bakery is often recommended and has a lovely location with nice views over the lake, which makes it a popular stop for many visitors exploring Hakone. It’s also one of the few options around the area, so it tends to get quite a bit of attention. 🥐 The Bakery Experience On the ground floor, you’ll find a wide variety of pastries—each one individually wrapped in plastic for hygiene. While this is common in Japan, it can sometimes affect the freshness. For example, my pain au chocolat was unfortunately quite hard, and it felt like it might not have been baked that morning. ☕ Café Seating & Drinks If you’d like to eat in, there’s a second floor where you can sit down as long as you order at least one drink per person. Just note that here they only offer regular milk—no dairy alternatives. I ordered a matcha latte, which came already sweetened (sugar is added by default), so it might be too sweet for some. 🧾 Ordering System You place your order at a vending-style machine, and they’ll call your number (printed on the receipt) when your order is ready. 🥄 Third Floor Option There’s also a third floor café with a slightly different menu—soy and oat milk are available there, but prices are noticeably higher. For example, the drip coffee costs almost twice as much, though it’s intended to be shared by two people, as kindly explained by the staff. 📝 Final Thoughts It’s a convenient stop with lovely views, and the staff were polite and helpful. Just keep in mind that the food and drinks might not match the level of the view, especially if you’ve tried other bakeries in Japan. Still, it can be a nice rest stop during your visit around the lake.
Anna H — Google review
The bakery is right by the lake. Lots of options for bakery, and they all were tasty! The curry bread won the grand-prix award, so I tried it. It was tasty, but I was not so experienced with curry bread, so I couldn't tell if that was up to its name or not 😅

Nestled in a serene woodland area with streams and hot springs, the Okada Museum of Art showcases an extensive collection of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean cultural treasures. Opened in 2013, this museum houses a diverse array of early-modern Japanese paintings, East Asian ceramics, and Buddhist sacred statues dating back to the 11th century. The modern building seamlessly integrates into its natural surroundings while providing over 5,000 square meters of exhibition space across five floors.
One of the my highlights of visiting Japan. We went late and only toured the first floor. Photos were not allowed there which gave us opportunity to immerse ourselves in the display. Will definitely comeback again.
Jenny Z — Google review
Superb museum of Japanese, Korean and Chinese art and ceramics. We saw a special exhibition on the 53 stations of the old Tōkaidō which had old versions of 55 woodcuts. Quite special. We spent 4 hours there, it's quite large. There's an udon restaurant in a lovely setting, and a footbath cafe. The only problem is that ¥2,800 is quite steep. I think it kept people away, which means it was fairly quiet, even on autumn Sunday. They are also very strict about not bringing in phones or other camera devices, all the way to having a metal detector. There's lots of lockers at the entrance. The building is nice as well but the interior is kept quite dark.

Definitely a top-notch, world-class museum for Japanese, Korean and Chinese ancient works of art worth checking out. No photography allowed inside.

Very good museum. If you want to see the whole exhibition, it is recommended to arrange at least 2 hours to view the exhibition.

This place is special, far exceeded my expectations. It’s rather nondescript from the outside, but the art treasures it holds inside were tremendous. No photography allowed, which makes the experience more enjoyable, you don’t have the masses snapping endless pics.

Okada Museum of Art is a special exhibit of true ancient artifacts and woodblock painting. Many items exhibited are from centuries ago even some artifacts go back to centuries before BC. The museum is a must visit for any Archaeologists and even Historians meanwhile for tourists who aren’t interested in such area/field, I will recommend to prioritize visiting the Hakone Open Air Museum as it is better suited option and will definitely be more interesting… It may be noted that mobile phones, cameras and other items are not allowed in Okada Museum of Art. The museum include an open air foot bath which can be accessed separately for 500¥ or included for free as part of your ticket.

Extensive pottery ware from the Han Dynasty, Joseon era, and Edo period. Pottery lovers would love this place. No pictures allowed inside but it’s okay. After visiting the museum, take a soak outside at the Ashi-yu and enjoy a parfait while you are at it. Very enjoyable!

The purpose I visited here was to see the exhibition, “Utamaro and Hokusai ― Creators of an Era ―”. I have often visited Hokusai’s exhibitions many times but I was satisfied with seeing his famous artwork in this museum, “Under the Wave off Kanagawa , from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. In addition, you can enjoy Asian art and craft in the permanent exhibition area.

Scenic spot
Nestled at the foot of Mount Hakone, the Sengokuhara Susuki Grass Fields offer a stunning natural spectacle that captivates visitors with its vast expanses of pampas grass. From late September to early November, this enchanting landscape transforms into a shimmering sea of silver as the grass sways gracefully in the autumn breeze. Just a short 30-minute journey from Hakone-Yumoto Station, it’s an easily accessible gem for nature lovers and photographers alike.
This stunning trail takes you through the Sengokuhara Pampas Grass Fields, one of Hakone’s most scenic natural landscapes. The path gently ascends through rolling hills covered in golden pampas grass, creating a mesmerizing sea of swaying stalks that change color with the seasons—from lush green in summer to golden hues in autumn and winter. The trail itself is relatively easy, making it suitable for all fitness levels. Walking along the well-maintained path, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and forests, especially on clear days when the sky provides a striking contrast to the golden grass. The peaceful atmosphere makes this an excellent spot for a relaxing stroll, photography, or simply soaking in the beauty of nature. Best time to visit: Autumn (September–November) offers the most dramatic golden landscapes, but the trail is beautiful year-round. Tips: • Visit in the early morning or late afternoon for the best lighting and fewer crowds. • Wear comfortable shoes, as the path has a slight incline. • Bring a light jacket, as it can get windy. If you’re in Hakone, this trail is a must-visit for nature lovers and photographers!
Pakorn M — Google review
One the best free attractions in Hakone better than some paid ones. The grass field from autumn until March is quite beautiful with a golden hour gotten it's expanse. Have a jacket at hand as the place gets windy. Also wear comfortable shoes as it is a gravel path with a bit of an incline.
Saurabh — Google review
Pretty scenic short route (probably about 30min return if you take your time) It was a dry, sunny day so not slippery at all. The route itself is slightly steep but nothing too challenging. Strollers definitely not recommended
Jeff W — Google review
Amazing spot - 100% recommend it was definitely one of the most amazing spots we saw around Hakone. The pictures don't do it justice - the grass fields with the forest and mountains in the background are simply splendid. You can only reach out by car so it was also not as crowded as the other popular places around Hakone.
Jenny L — Google review
Expansive field of susuki ( Pampas) grasses. The view can change greatly depending on the weather or time of day. If you're lucky you'll see some kiji (pheasants) flying around. There is one main path to follow up the hill in the midst of the grass which is pretty cool. It's very rocky and uneven so leave those stilettos back home for this trip! There's a Lawson across the road and a few small cafes/ tea shops in the vicinity but not much else. A short walk away is free parking by the sewage treatment centre, with a huge lot. There are other parking spots nearby charging a small fortune, but don't be fooled
JG T — Google review
Visited close to autumn this year, and it was absolutely stunning. The golden pampas grass swaying in the cold, windy breeze, especially near sunset, created a breathtaking and picturesque view. The warm glow of the setting sun made the scene even more magical. It's free to visit and easy to access, making it a must-see spot. Despite the chill, the scenery was completely worth it – a serene escape into nature! Highly recommend for anyone traveling to Hakone in autumn.

Hakone Checkpoint, located in Hakone-Machi, is a replica of a guardhouse from the Edo era used to inspect travelers and goods along the Tokaido Highway. The site also features remnants of the old highway lined with ancient cedars. History enthusiasts will appreciate its significance as an important site for transportation and communication during the Edo period.
A well organized historical fortress to secure this district. You can see lots of heritage stuffs and designated layout and artwork here. Good to take a look at this place after having the pirate boat cruising. Enjoy.

A fascinating glimpse into Japan’s history! Hakone Checkpoint is a well-preserved historical site that gives you insight into the Edo period’s travel and security system. The museum and reconstructed buildings are informative and engaging, with displays that bring history to life. The location by Lake Ashi offers beautiful views, making it both educational and scenic. Perfect for history enthusiasts, families, or anyone exploring Hakone’s cultural attractions!

What an amazing place, it was a shame that the weather was not so great, but you can get the atmosphere of the place. Did go on the ferry, but the trip lasted 15 minutes and went 1.5K, would love a longer ride on the lake. But a beautiful and calm place.

One of the best places in my overall Japan trip. The detailed rebuilt checkpoint buildings are amazing. The woodworking detail and the preservation is something to be proud of. The staffs are very helpful in explaining and the view is stunning!

A rebuilt old checkpoint fort. The old buildings have been reconstructed with care for the historical accuracy. It has brief placards talking about life at the fort, roles and responsibilities for staff members, and the construction of the fort. I would recommend walking up the hill to the watchtower for the view.

Visited Hakone Checkpoint and really enjoyed stepping back in time! The reconstructed gates and guardhouses are super well done, and the small museum has lots of interesting historical details. The lookout point offers amazing views of Lake Ashi and the surrounding mountains. Easy to walk around and the staff are friendly. A great stop if you’re exploring Hakone—history buffs and casual visitors alike will enjoy it!

Nestled just a short stroll from Gora Station, GORA BREWERY & GRILL is a chic brewery restaurant that beautifully marries the art of Japanese cuisine with craft beer. Established in 2017 by the illustrious chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa, known for his innovative fusion dishes, this venue boasts an inviting ambiance characterized by modern Japanese aesthetics and striking red walls.
GORA BREWERY & GRILL is a refined yet welcoming spot tucked into the hills of Hakone, and it’s a must-visit if you’re craving elevated Japanese-Western fusion with a side of craft beer. We arrived at 6 PM and, despite the place being packed, the staff graciously seated us with the caveat that we’d need to finish within an hour. That worked perfectly—we were starving and ready to dive in. We ordered a flight of their house-brewed beers, each one distinct and delicious. The garlic-forward pale ale and the smooth amber stood out, but the whole flight was a treat. For food, we stuck to shareable plates—appetizers and small dishes that were beautifully presented and devoured in minutes. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and clearly crafted with care. The bar seating is a highlight. You can watch the chefs prepare meals right in front of you, framed by a serene backdrop of a lush green garden and a minimalist rock garden. It’s a visual feast that pairs perfectly with the culinary one. The bathroom is tiny but spotlessly clean and charming—just another detail that shows how much thought went into the space. Prices are on the higher side, but the quality and atmosphere justify the splurge. The restaurant is part of the Itoh Dining group, and the executive chef behind it—Chef Itoh—has earned acclaim for his creative approach to Japanese cuisine. His influence is evident in the menu’s balance of tradition and innovation. If you’re in Gora and looking for a polished dining experience with great beer and a beautiful setting, GORA BREWERY & GRILL is a standout. Just be sure to book ahead—they fill up fast, and for good reason.

Beautiful restaurant on the Hakone loop. Food was delicious and tasty. Bit of a hike up hill to get to if you walk from the rail station. Might be better to take the incline to the first stop and walk over if you are riding it anyway. Loved dining at the counter and gazing into the zen like rock garden. Food was tasty I really liked the salmon skin salad it was refreshing and the skin was very crunchy with a good meaty taste. The house bread was piping hot and fresh and the tuna hand roll was also delicious . This is a spot that is totally western tourist oriented so don't expect much authentic takes but you don't always need that when dining with such high quality ingredients. Do expect to pay quite a bit they're priced for tourists as well.

This place was exceptional!! Food, service and vibe were top notch. One of the few places that serves lamb in Japan so it was a nice change. The sticky rice was so good, the matcha was amazing and we don’t even really like matcha! Service was good and quick, I’m booking here again for sure!!

We managed to get a walk in spot at around 5pm and got seated straight away. Staff were friendly and sitting at the counter watching the chefs work is a fun experience. There is a large floor to ceiling window that is a great backdrop. Food was excellent and drinks were good.

Dining here was a fantastic experience from start to finish. While the entire meal was delicious, the A4 wagyu was the undisputed highlight. It was perfectly cooked and incredibly tender with a rich flavor that exceeded expectations. The entire restaurant felt special and the panoramic view from the bar created a beautiful, serene atmosphere that made the food and drinks even more enjoyable. On the beverage side, the stout was a standout. This is definitely a place I'd recommend for both the food and the ambiance.
Tony — Google review
The atmosphere and kitchen counter seating are great, but we had a few issues: (1) Two items of our order were apparently forgotten, and it was very difficult to get the focus of the ONE server, who is serving the entire restaurant. One of our “starters” didn’t arrive for 45 minutes, long after we finished the rest of the meal. (2) The vegetarian options are rather limited, and there was not a single vegetarian main dish. (3) The “1 drink per person minimum” was offputting, given that our meal for 2 people was about ¥8000 and more than covered the cost of serving us. Options in Hakone are limited, though, so a less-than-perfect experience seems like it’s par for the course, and with our poor Japanese language skills, we appreciated an English-language menu and a server who spoke English well.

You can’t ask for more in a remote place half way between Hakone Yumoto and Gora. Amazing views, good food, best in class Japanese service and a super dedicated owner who is keeping the legacy of Naraya brand. It’s not very common for caffe’s in Japan to have kids play area, this place have multiple kids play areas and also a small library for reading books. Foot bath/onsen is also a nice attraction…and of course the coffee is one of the best in the area. It is right outside the train station and accessible with baby car…although you cannot move baby car inside.

The tranquil atmosphere of the bamboo forest adds to its majestic appeal. Visitors can stroll through the beautiful garden, which changes with the seasons, and admire the 500 Arhats, each displaying a unique facial expression.
Low-key Zen. Nice one. Acres of wonderful forested walking paths on the hillside behind the temple buildings ... filled with old trees and statuary. We were impressed by the numerous volunteer locals meticulously clipping away at the intruding weeds. Parking, lavatory and cemetery included at no charge!

We began our walk but due to very steep slippery sloped paths we decided to turn back and walk the more accessible Cedar pathway to the Hakone Sekisho Checkpoint

Although it's a short walk, striding amongst these giant ceder trees is an awe inspiring experience. The path is easily accessible from the main road of Hakone. The whole walk is maybe 15 minutes, when walking slowly. The trees are huge, and like all nature places in Japan, the path is super clean, and very well maintained. The easy path is suitable for families with young children, as it's super easy for everyone.

I recommend you to start at Amasake Tea House, then walk towards the lake. Wear good shoes since the copple steps make it really hard to walk on. Small beautiful place; Not a lotto do. Things that you can do here; take the ropeway to the top station to see Mount Fuji which may or may not be in function due to wind etc,A nice walk to the sea side, visit restaurants or stores for souvenirs or visit museum or aquarium or even take the motor boat with the bus there(another foam of enjoying the sea without the ship)etc. Just bear in mind the last time of the bus or the ferry if you will be using those.

This botanical garden is set by the lake and you can be lots of blooms on trees, and on the ground especially in spring. Mostly level terrain but fair bit of walking. Wear comfy shoes, hat, sunscreen, take water. Great place for photography. No entry fees. Cable car station to go up the hill is nearby.

A great outdoor experience. From the boat tour to the cable car ride up the mountain I'm not sure which was more stunning to experience. Exceptional place, with incredible service as well. Chef was willing to open for dinner an hour early for us to accommodate our travel plans, and was very friendly throughout the meal. We had the full course tasting menu and trust me, you really don’t want to miss out on anything. You could say we are quite the foodies and we’ve eaten in a lot of restaurants all across the world (from best of the world to local ramen shops etc). We’ve entered this cosy Japanese restaurant and the service and hospitality is top notch, you take off your shoes upon entry which adds to the experience (as a western person I guess). We roughly had around 7 courses and they were all incredibly well balanced and super tasteful. The sashimi we had was arguably the best we’ve tasted in our lives so far (yes we’ve been to the Tokyo fish market and had dinner the day before at a Michelin star sushi restaurant in Tokyo) and we still think this sashimi was better. The photo’s will speak for itself, if you are anywhere near we would say it’s a must visit. Thank you so much Chef and wife for an incredible evening and experience!! Dōmo arigatōgozaimasu! ♥️ PS: the price quality ratio is amazing as well! (Not expensive at all with the current exchange rate)

We loved the 7 course menu chef Yuughen and his assistant Mikko prepared for us. (I’m sorry if the spelling of the names is not correct!) The combination of ingredients, flavors, textures was perfectly balanced throughout the meal. The tempura was the best I have ever had. The abalone and sea urchin appetizer was definitely the most intriguing dish for my palate. We thought that this restaurant was a real discovery for us. The price of the set menu is more than fair for the experience and for the actual choice of dishes that you can taste. The great thing is that both chef Yuughen and Mikko are fluent in English, so communication for us was easy. I highly recommend this restaurant!

From the former Hakone Port, now known as Moto-Hakone Port, tourists can enjoy stunning sights such as Lake Ashi and Mount Fuji. We took a ship cruise, and it was absolutely amazing. From start to finish, the experience was unforgettable. The vessel itself was spotless—every deck, cabin, and common area was immaculately maintained, which made us feel comfortable and well cared for. As we sailed, the panoramic views were breathtaking. Whether it was the glistening water at sunrise or the distant coastline at sunset, each moment felt picture‑perfect. The gentle rocking of the ship, the fresh sea breeze, and the sound of waves created a serene atmosphere that made it easy to relax and simply enjoy the journey. Overall, everything about the trip—from the impeccable cleanliness to the stunning vistas—came together flawlessly. It wasn’t just a ride on a ship; it was a truly memorable adventure.

A bit cloudy today, but nice boat ride across the lake. Ship is great, if you get seasick easy, I don't think you will have a problem. Didn't feel it rock once. Upper deck is great to take pics and get views. Interior, better for those are afraid of water or worried they might get sick.
Audria G — Google review
The Hakone Pirate Ship from Tōgendai Port is a solid photo-op and a relaxing little ride if you’re already in the Hakone area — but probably not something to plan your day around. Here’s how it stacks up: What’s good: • The pirate-ship design is fun and visually striking, especially from the dock or water, so it makes for great photos. • The views of Lake Ashi, surrounding mountains, and, on a clear day, Mt. Fuji are lovely. • The trip is fairly relaxing; the ship ride is smooth. It’s a nice break from walking, ropeways, etc. What falls short: • It’s mostly just transport (port to port) in a themed ship; there isn’t a lot to “do” on the ship itself. • Crowds can get annoying, especially in non-first-class sections. Seating may be limited or uncomfortable if you don’t upgrade. • The scenery and photo opportunities are weather-dependent. If it’s cloudy or misty, you may not see Mt. Fuji or get clear views. Conclusion: If you happen to be nearby and want a pleasant ride with some nice scenery, it’s worth it. But don’t let this be the highlight of your Hakone trip — it’s pleasant and charming, but not particularly special once you’ve done it.

Great ferry service that connects different parts of Hakone. The tickets are quite affordable (less than 2000 yen) and can be reserved up front which I recommend or bought at the counter. The hakone free pass can also be used here if you have it. I did not upgrade to their premium tier which lets you be on the front section of the ship. It didn't really seem worth it and from all other parts of the ship you have great views as it is.

The Hakone Pirate Ship from Tōgendai Port was such a fun experience! Sailing across Lake Ashi on a pirate-themed cruise felt awesome — the ship looks great and even has a cozy café on board. If you’ve got the Hakone Pass, it’s a total steal since you can ride this (and other attractions) for free. On cruise we are!

We had a Hakone 2 day pass and took the trip on the pirate boat both days. Sunday was very busy with long ques for the rope way. I would highly recoment it. Get a Hakone pass 1 or 2 days and plan you trip for a week day if you can. The day was clear for us and we saw Fuji clearly at the top of the rop way.

It was absolutely fantastic, great views of Mt Fuji. Would recommend doing this trip. It's set im a gorgeous little village.

A good ship tour. The ship was clean and enough place to see the lake. We went on a rainy day so could not see Mount Fuji. The lake and the area around were beautiful and green. The Hakone pass also included the ticket for the tour.

The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise offers a unique experience for travelers looking to explore the scenic landscapes of Hakone. This popular tourist attraction features pirate-style ships that take passengers on a cruise across Lake Ashi, providing stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the iconic Mount Fuji on clear days. The cruise serves as a convenient mode of transport between various stations and townships in Hakone, allowing visitors to enjoy the picturesque scenery while traveling between destinations.
The boats are simple yet, very well designed. If you want to grab a simple meal or a beer, you can do so on-board. The crossing ride is only 15 minutes but it's well worth the travel. Very quiet.
Gabriel — Google review
The ferry service to get from one side of the lake to the other is quite useful. It is much nicer than riding the bus, and the views along the way are great. I could pass on the fake pirate theme, but it doesn't hurt for the kids. They push getting the first class tickets, but I didn't see much of an advantage when we were there with low congestion. It might be worth the space if the ship is crowded.
Bill R — Google review
It's a pretty quick cruise not that expensive. Very nice scenery. Boats are very nice and well maintained. It's a big day from Tokyo on trains, cable car, ropeway, boat, bus and train again. A good day out in the country hills.

PROS ➕ Pirate ship ➕ Free with Hakone Pass ➕ Great view of Lake Ashi CONS ➖ None Date visited: 05/06/2024 Since this cruise was included with the pass I bought upon arriving in Hakone, I took the opportunity to ride it. The check-in process was quick and easy, though the wait was long due to the ship’s schedule. There were seats and shops around the port—perfect for stocking up on snacks and drinks. Unfortunately, most shops had already closed by the time I finished checking in. I managed to grab a cookie and a coffee drink from a small café nearby. The weather was less than ideal: cold, cloudy, and foggy, which meant we wouldn’t be able to see Mount Fuji from the lake. When our ship finally arrived, it looked even more colorful and festive than it had from afar or in photos. People boarded and disembarked in an instant; I followed suit. Passengers who had purchased first-class seating were led to a separate hall. I was in the standard class, but chose to sit outside near the flagpole to enjoy the lake view. Many others joined me later, while some retreated indoors to escape the chilly wind. I spotted several local attractions peeking through the thick treeline—some I had already visited. The most recognizable were, of course, the Peace Torii and a luxury hotel, just to name a few. Since the ship was actually a ferry and didn’t sway much, I didn’t feel as seasick as I usually do on regular ships or airplanes. The whole trip went smoothly and without incident. We reached the port on the opposite side of the lake in under an hour. All in all, this is a must-do in Hakone—especially if you’ve purchased a pass. Just be mindful of the schedule; I nearly missed the cable car because of it.
Thang — Google review
The view is good even without first class tickets. If you're worried about space and want to make sure you have comfortable seating you can give it a go. But the first class upper deck doesn't have shelter, while the ordinary deck has multiple outdoor tiers, one of which is roofed by the top deck, so you get to sit in the shade while getting a view unobstructed by glass. The ship was pretty clean, but I thought the views pretty ordinary. I didn't see mt Fuji at all. I mostly took the ship as a way to get around. It was a decently comfortable ride, though the chairs on the outside decks were hard and not cushioned. The ship itself is very beautiful though.
Nunia B — Google review
Great cruise. If no clouds over the mountains you can see Mount Fuji. I suggest to get the 2 way pass, since you can get off on the different tourist spots and hop back on again till you see them all.
Dusan G — Google review
Hakone Sightseeing tour is pretty expensive for how short it is. I will say the ships are nice. They offer good drinks and snacks
A S — Google review
The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise is a fun way to see Lake Ashi and the surrounding mountains. The pirate-ship-themed boats are really cool, and the views of the lake and Mt. Fuji (on a clear day) are amazing. For the best experience, I recommend going early, riding on a clear day, and getting first-class seats—it’s less crowded and the view is way better. Relaxing on deck and taking in the scenery was one of the highlights of my Hakone visit.

The Hakone Museum of Art showcases an exclusive collection of Japanese artwork, featuring ancient ceramics from prehistoric times to the Edo Period. The museum's founder, Mokichi Okada, skillfully designed beautiful traditional gardens that perfectly embody the essence of true Japanese aesthetics. These gardens can be best appreciated in November when the vibrant autumn foliage adds a colorful touch to the lush natural surroundings.
Forest shower therapy, you can capture every little detail from the vivid green leaves, sunlit stone path to the tall straight cedar trees. I spent an hour soaking it all in. Highly recommend if you love quiet moments, sunlight through trees, and taking peaceful nature photos #ForestBathing #NatureLovers #ShinrinYoku #QuietMoments #TreeTherapy #JapanNature

A relatively small but calming Japanese style moss garden with exhibit halls showing paintings of a Japanese artist and also some ancient Japanese pottery. Parts of the garden were closed off and there was some repair works when I visited at the end of September 2024. There is also a small tea house where you can buy tea and a small snack to sit and admire the moss garden. As it was empty and looked dark inside, it looked closed and I didn’t go in. I took my time at this garden/museum and stayed around 1 hr 45 minutes. I would say if you’re the check-box type of traveller, an hour would be more than sufficient. There is free parking within 3 minutes walking distance of the entrance.

Chaya Honjin Hotoriya, situated by the shore of Lake Ashi, features several souvenir shops and a spacious Cafe Komon on its second floor. Upon arrival, request a window seat to admire the breathtaking views of Lake Ashi, the encompassing mountain range, and the majestic Mt. Fuji in the backdrop. As you unwind, indulge in grilling dango dumplings and mochi rice cake at your table using a small grill.
❇️ We had lunch at Cafe Komon. The food was truly delicious! ● Esp the roast beef set. ➡️ Lunch = Katsu Set Rice (¥1450) + Roast Beef Salad (¥1650). 🟦 Cafe Kumon has a lovely view of Lake Ashinoko and sitting there eating and staring out at the lake, we felt so at peace and am grateful for everything. 🟧 The Togendai Pirate Cruise Ship had let us alight at Hakone Machi-Ko village's jetty.

Hitsumabushi rice bowl with fresh wasabi was excellent.. Simple, delicious Japanese flavors.. Pork cutlet was also well done with exceptionally crispy breading. View of the lake was a nice bonus.

This place was amazing!! We stopped in for lunch in the middle of our lake cruise and the food was phenomenal! There was a short wait, only about 10 mins at most to get a table for a group of 7. The food was fresh and delicious. The grill your own mochi and build your own daifuku was the coolest and most delicious thing ever! We got both and loved it. We would highly recommend stopping here!

We had the pork cutlet, the seasonal beef cutlet and the crème brûlée dessert. It was the best food we’ve had on our Japan trip so far!! We got there at about 11:30AM and the tables were full but we only had to wait about 10 minutes for a table and the lobby was warm and had seating so it was very comfortable. The staff were really lovely and helpful. The food was incredible, had great portions and the pricing was so reasonable - it only cost us ¥6900 for two full mains and a dessert (at the very least this is very reasonable compared to the prices we have back in Australia!)

The atmosphere was amazing. It was nice and peaceful to just soak in the beautiful scenery. We managed to get a window seat which is a bonus! We ordered 2 desserts and it was amazing. Everything felt nice and fresh. I really like the red bean mochi!

Surprisingly amazing food for a tourist hot spot. Generous size portions, especially for lunch. I had the salmon on seasoned rice as a set. Superb. Lovely views of Fuji if you are lucky enough to get the right seat, which we did. Large establishment, imagine it gets super busy in peak periods.

Service and staff we excellent. We had a beautiful view of the lake. We got lunch here at around 11:00 and it was not busy at all. The food presentation was beautiful and delicious. I would highly recommend it. This cafe is next to the pirate ship sightseeing cruise..

We ordered the rice bowl with steak (Hitsumabushi), stone bowl Hamburg steak with rice, and green salad with 6 kinds of beans. All the dishes were beautiful and tasted great! The stone bowl came over a fire so the rice was crispy underneath. The atmosphere was peaceful and view was outstanding. Would come back again! Would love to try the desserts but want to try other places.

Nestled in a picturesque setting, the Hakone Venetian Glass Museum, also known as Hakone Garasu no Mori or Hakone Glass Forest, is a delightful museum that focuses on Venetian glassware. It boasts an impressive collection of exquisite glass pieces from various periods, with a special emphasis on those from the Venetian Renaissance.
A beautiful museum. Close to a bus station so it is easy to access. We went here on a super foggy day, so the garden was like a fairy tale. However it might be more beautiful on sunny days since the glass would be more beautiful under the sunlight. Indoor things were not that special, but the garden was very beautiful. Worth to visit.

WOW!!! The sparkles here!! You have to go on a sunny day or at least with the sun peaking through the clouds. The way the light hits the outdoor pieces is UNREAL! Loved all the indoor pieces too. Chihuly is always amazing to see in person. We had just been to Venice about a year earlier and it was so lovely to see it replicated so well here in Hakone! You will not regret exploring this museum, absolutely recommend!

Fabulous museum, both indoors and out. A brilliantly varied mix of static glassware indoors, glass sculptures outside, a concert, and an excellent restaurant (ideal for lunch). I was expecting a tourist trap but was very pleasantly surprised. Whether you're looking for entertainment or just shade and relaxation, you mustn't miss this one.

A museum that displays glass art throughout history. The museum has a spectacular garden and a very large souvenir shop. The place is beautiful and highly recommended for a visit.

We went to this place during the Obon holidays and we completely loved the experience. Despite the poor weather, this place was packed and they had so many exhibitions to explore. Since we were on a time crunch to take our little one back home for his bed time, we were not able to explore everything but we know we will be back again to explore the rest. The restaurant offered a very good food; my favorite was the scone tea set. But I was told that they have a great lunch menu so we will want to try that next time. Live music is the best part of this restaurant. This place will be a great place for couples looking for something different but also for families with different interests.

Not for European Tourist. It’s kinda built like Italy/ Venice in particular. But it’s really not impressing if you know Italian countries or have been in in a glas museum in Europe. Best part is the globe inside 😅 and the price is 1800 yen for adults.

Italian restaurant
La Terrazza is an Italian restaurant located in Ashinoko Terrace, offering a variety of wood-fired pizzas, pasta, and salad dishes. Situated by Lake Ashi and close to the boarding pier for cruise ships, it provides stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains. With the option to dine on the terrace during sunny weather, guests can enjoy the picturesque scenery while savoring authentic Neapolitan pizza from a selection of 30 different types.
Stopped here for a quick dinner, we did not have a reservation on a weekday at 5pm but they let us in. We were the first table before the dinner rush, by the time we left at 6pm the place was full. The service was great, our phones battery was very low and the nice server gave us battery packs to charge up while we ate. The food quickly came out, the pastas were wonderful. The mushroom pasta comes with bacon while the tomato pasta is vegetarian. The vibe of this restaurant is great with the view of the lake. Would recommend to seat away from the door as the automatic doors bring in cold air when people come in. Reservations seem to be needed most days specifically for busy dinner time. The washrooms were nice and clean. You pay at the counter when you are done your meal. The service was great and one of the servers even helped us get a cab! Would recommend this nice spot for an Italian dinner!

This is a bright and chic Italian restaurant by the lakeside. We had a pizza, a pasta dish, an appetizer and dessert. The service was efficient and the food was served quick and hot. I found the fried vegetables appetizer not so worthy but overall it was a good meal. They have a canine friendly area (separate room) where you can have your dog join you at the dining table. I'm sure pet lovers would love this place. If the "halal" mention attracts you, just know there are no halal meat options on the menu. This place is worth going to for a decent Italian meal.
Imraan — Google review
Has both indoor and outdoor seating, large parties ok. Reservations preferred. Food was pretty good, decent portions. Prices are a bit high but not unexpected for a touristy area. Desserts were really good, especially the tiramisu and seasonal plum sorbet.

During my trip to Hakone, after a long day of tour, we were super hungry. we went to this restaurant for some italian pizza. Ended up late evening wirhout a reservation almost near to the closing hour but they were kind to let us in. The place was full house. Service staff were very polite and friendly. Ordered pizza and pasta. Both were served pretty fast. Pizza very flavourful and aromatic.. it was perfectly baked with juicy toppings. Definitely a must visit place if you are at Hakone.
J J — Google review
Very good pizza place by the coast. Short opening time in the evening so make a reservation or get there early (as it opens is best). The pizza is good, Italian style and flavourful. They are generous with the toppings. The deserts are nice also but not quite gelato. The staff are pleasant as is expected in Japan, but there is a sense of rush which I think comes with having to deal with tourist groups daily.
Daryl S — Google review
So to be honest, the pizza was really good.It has a really good location right on the water.I'll say it again. The pizza was very good.Unfortunately, the prices are extremely high.Especially for japan, they are banking on tourists. And they are doing it because they can also because, for whatever reason, half the restaurants in the area close at five o'clock, even on a friday makes zero sense with how much money they could be making, I get it, they do what they can.But twenty one dollars for a pizza is outrageous. The waitstaff is really friendly. The service is great. The food is great, but the prices have to be lowered seven dollars for a super dry draft is way high.
A S — Google review
We ordered the recommended Prosciutto Pizza along with a side of fried mozzarella bites. The pizza was delicious—we easily finished the whole thing between the two of us after a long day exploring Hakone. The mozzarella bites, however, were a bit disappointing as they arrived lukewarm; we would’ve preferred them hotter. Unfortunately, the service felt just as lukewarm. Overall, it was still an enjoyable meal, but if given the chance, I’d probably try a different restaurant next time.
Deborah C — Google review
We had dinner here and it was just about the only place open in the evening. The restaurant has a nice view of Lake Ashi and the ambience is modern and inviting. We had a good dinner here.

Narukawa Art Museum, established in 1988, is a private art museum offering a stunning panoramic view of Lake Ashi. The museum houses an impressive collection of over 4,000 modern and renowned Japanese paintings, ranging from works by esteemed artists like Kyujin Yamamoto and Ikuo Hirayama to pieces by emerging talents. The exhibitions are refreshed seasonally to provide visitors with diverse experiences throughout the year.
I believe most tourists visit this place for the stunning window view of Mt. Fuji, and it truly lives up to the hype. The view is absolutely breathtaking and an ideal spot for capturing beautiful photos. The paintings on display are also impressive. I was delighted to find a collection of ink wash paintings, which I personally love. The local artists are incredibly talented, and their work adds a wonderful cultural touch to the experience.

This place has the best views. You need to pay the entrance fee for the cafe but definitely worth it. The museum istels is small but has some amazing pieces. The glass pieces were a nice surprise and fantastic, I wish they had more. People saying it is not impressive clearly have no appreciation for actual art.

There's nothing special about this park, it's pretty normal. We didn't stay there long, maybe on a sunny day it would be better to use it as a place to relax and stay longer. In some parts of it there's a really nice view of the lake next to the mountains.

Highly recommended experience. The seal feeding is once in a lifetime. 800 yen per pax and there are only 15 slots each time.

It’s a very small aquarium and you can see it all in about 30 mins. But it does have a good range of fish and some seals. Warning: if you are using the Hakone Free Pass. There’s only one bus every hour and we got stranded as the bus was full and wouldn’t let anyone one. There’s response to well how do we get back was: get a taxi.

Super small. Good place to go when it’s raining. Wanted to shake hands with the otters but we missed the show time. Only available twice a day.

One because I can't give 0. Passed by because I had the free pass hakone which included this. There should be a some ministerial action against this place in order to close it. Never seen animals so poorly treated in an aquarium. 35 days in Japan. Dirty places, penguins looked like they just wanted to die, saw 1 mammal completely abandoned in a room over a counter with absolutely no conditions to hold him and unsupervised. The only negative thing I have on a 35 day trip to Japan. Criminal.
João S — Google review
It's a decent small aquarium, however you can feel it's age as the aquarium definitely needs some renovation to look more modern. Price is ok, it's about 1000yen for entry so there is nothing much to complain about it. If you have gone to other Japanese aquarium this will feel small. Overall still worth seeing their seals and baby otters which are newborns and worth coming down to see them.
Jun T — Google review
Our kids had great time there. But the parking fee was too expensive! When we went here last year, the parking fee was free... Anyway, the aquarium has two buildings. And the new animals "otters" were so cute. I felt their space was too small for them. But my kids were so happy to see them. They have a few show events everyday and you can enjoy. Please check their show schedules before you go!
Yui A — Google review
Small aquarium at the base of ropeway. Hundreds of types of fishes, Tiger fish, clown fish, crabs, salamander, jelly fish, turtle, and may sea creatures. There is a seal show around 15 mins. Beautiful scenery all around. There is a small shopping store with hundreds of souvenirs to take back including wooden carved paintings and special lock puzzle and candies. Small Due to high winds, ropeway may be closed and you may get a chance to view the aquarium.
Sudershan G — Google review
Small but fun. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit but it was nice since I was in the area. I didn't find anything too significant about it. But I loved the shark tube and watching them swim overhead.

Nestled along the scenic route from Motohakone-ko to the historic Odakyu Hotel de Yama, Salon de Thé Rosage offers a delightful escape that feels as if it’s floating on Lake Ashi. This charming dessert café is perfectly situated near Hakone-jinja Shrine, making it an ideal spot for a well-deserved break after exploring the shrine's beautiful grounds.
The restaurant is located by the lakeside, with floor-to-ceiling glass walls offering a beautiful view . I enjoyed a Western-style afternoon tea, and the highlight were the staffs, they were very polite and attentive. I ordered an apple pie set, and in addition to serving me a pot of English hot tea very gently, one of staff personally prepared a beautiful and unforgettable side dish right in front of me, so amazing, showing her 💖💖💖! Haha! I will definitely come back again👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

If you're looking for some grub after checking out Hakone Shrine or while waiting for the crowd at the Heiwa no Torii (Torii of Peace) to die down, walk abit ahead and you'll find a nice little cafe with a great view of Lake Ashi. Had their egg souffle omurice from their lunch menu that day and was very satisfied. Super wobbly and all fluffy on the inside. Mixing it all up made for an interesting omurice that had a light and airy texture but still rich in flavour. Their signature apple pie was also nice; plated very elaborately and paired very well with a scoop of ice cream.

Flirt with the waves from Lake Ashi, or write a poem for the mountains around her. Don’t forget to eat the apple pie you asked for. Great service. The apple pie plating presentation was amazing, and delicious!

Loved the place - patisserie is delicious, very good coffee and a big selection of loose leaf tea. Serving is very posh - very much like typical high tea. Place is located just at the lake side and by the clear day you have a view on Mount Fuji - has a parking or a 5minute walk from Hakone shrine

Visited 3 November 2023 Had a beautiful afternoon tea at the Salon de the Rosage on our first day at Hakone. We arrived at Hakone around 3pm from Takayama and didnt get to have lunch. Decided to have afternoon tea as we were staying across the road at the Hotel De Yama. My friend and I both ordered the apple pie which was the house specialty. The waitress did the syrup art in front of us and we each got a different display of the sauce. Apple pie was delicious and the lake view was beautiful. Weather was perfect for outdoor seating.

A relaxing tea and a bite to go along with it, with a view second to none. A little on the expensive side, but well worth it for the experience. The apple tart is exceptional, and I can recommend the cheese cake as well.

Nestled in the peaceful mountain forests of Hakone, Daiyuzan Saijoji Temple is a historic complex of Buddhist temples and shrines dating back to 1394. Surrounded by over 20,000 ancient cedar trees, this serene setting offers a tranquil atmosphere for contemplation and communion with nature. In autumn, the temple grounds are adorned with vibrant fall foliage, creating a picturesque scene of rich reds and gold against lush greenery and moss-covered stones.
This is probably the best temple I've seen in Japan which is as form of Buddhism called Soutoushu. In Autumn the colors are amazing and set amongst an amazing forest the trees are incredibly big over 500 years old and really something out of a surreal fantasy movie. The temples and the entire precinct are amazing because they are set on a hillside and there are few steps to climb vut will and truly worth the visit. Again this Temple is set off the normal tourist beaten track and one for the locals but do yourself a favour and see this temple. Set in gold It's amazing and everything you think Japan should be, immaculate, heart felt and beautiful.
Brendan C — Google review
What a gem. Off the beaten path for most tourists this 14th century group of temples nestled in a 400 year old cedar forest is serene, enchanting, and thoroughly peaceful. Take the train to Daiyuzan, then walk through then suburb for about 1.5 miles. Then you get to walk another 1.5 miles but on a path through the 400 year old cedars. Magical. When you are done with the temples continue the short walk to the Only Yu Onsen. The combo makes for a fabulous day in Japan.
Kevin J — Google review
Nice temple with beautiful nature. Not crowed. There are many parking lots for cars.

It's a different world. Up in the mountains away from the crowd and noise of the city. Did zen meditation(坐禅)which was so purifying! The priest had a great sense of humour as well! The young monks were very gentle as well!
Sourabh ( — Google review
The temple is a vast complex to explore - the highlights are the giant red flip flops or geta. The main temple has a very colorful hall with magenta and red decoration along with an ornate gold chandelier, very dramatic. The century old structures are well preserved and intricate. The winged and beak kami is different from other temples as well. Free parking is available. Overall, I will return in the fall, I saw many Japanese maple trees on site and it would be gorgeous during momiji season.
Annie S — Google review
Not too crowded temple in the woods. A bus is going pretty close to the site. The temple area is bigger than i expected.

Literally one of my favourite places in the world. Temples scattered on the hillside among soaring cedar trees and an assortment of streams and water features. Beautiful in any season, but especially autumn for the colourful leaves. Similarly stunning in heavy rain and when covered in snow

Chisuji Falls is a small yet picturesque waterfall located in the forests of Hakone. The falls cascade down a 20-meter-wide stretch of moss-covered rock, creating a delicate and beautiful sight. Surrounding the area are several hiking trails suitable for gentle strolls, offering opportunities to witness fireflies in July and vibrant autumn foliage. Despite its modest size, Chisuji Falls provides a cool retreat during hot summer months and offers a tranquil spot for relaxation with picnic tables available nearby.
Beautiful and peaceful waterfall to visit on a Sunday. The hike to get to the falls is all up-hill, and since we were traveling with a toddler we took a taxi to the entrance which was well worth the money in the summer heat and very convenient since we didn’t see any parking. The walk back was a bit intense in one neighborhood carrying a 25-pound toddler up a steep hill, but it was brief. We caught a bus back to the Gora station with no problems at all and would recommend that if you’re traveling in the summer months or with family who may over heat easily.
Pam L — Google review
A little hard to find, even with Google maps. Lots of possible wrong turns to take. Attached photos of a few places along the way to finding it. Great place, very pretty! Overall, an easy hike. Look for the building/sign in photo with "parking" on it. Follow the road, will pass white chisuji sign. Keep going down main path until you see the wooden sign with 5 on it (see photo), then go down that trail and will see the green arrow sign. Go where the arrow is pointing and it will be there.
Lauren V — Google review
(As of Oct 2025) Ultimately found the waterfall with AllTrails. See pictures - 1, 2) get to the location at the blue dot on map, 3) will see a sign pointing to the falls, 4) first part of walk is next to a construction area on the left and hotels on the right, 5) then will see the sign in middle of the trail and go into the forest, 6) should arrive at falls within 5 minutes
Ling J — Google review
Didn't find a way, so we just crossed through the forest with no road just following the sound of the water falling. Ended up on top of the waterfalls, not where we wanted to arrive 😂 Really nice. It was a rainy hot day in August so nobody was there. We took a quick shower on the waterfall. The ground underwater was really muddy and didn't feel nice 🙂 But great experience. Good luck finding the right way in
Ivan T — Google review
YOU CAN STILL VISIT THE FALLS!! Only one entrance closed! (Probably because the owner of the private land got sick of disrespectful tourists 🙃) Head down Chisujinotaki St in front of the Mikawaya Ryokan. It is a beautiful short walk with a small but gorgeous falls!

It is okay, it was a slight pain to get to so don't highly recommend unless you really like waterfalls.
Arlen C — Google review
To get to the falls, there is only a short hike, but the path can be a bit wet and boggy. If possible, wears boots so you don’t sink in the mud. There is a hiking trail that’s a bit longer if you want to keep going past the falls. The falls is beautiful and quiet; we only ran into a few people.

Steak house
Yoshiike Steak House offers an elegant dining experience with a view of the garden while savoring Japanese Black beef grilled teppanyaki-style. The intimate setting accommodates up to 16 guests, making reservations highly recommended. The full course meal includes appetizers, soup, salad, meat, rice, and dessert - all cooked to perfection. While it's a bit pricey, the top-notch steak makes it worth it.
Can’t get any better. You want steak, just get here. Located In a boutique hotel. I ordered the A4 Sirloin, good for 2 persons, ended with desserts and coffee/tea. If I ever get to Hakone again, I will be there.

Amazing food, cooked right in front of you. The steak melted like butter!
Alina T — Google review
Move over Steak Satou, Kichijoji, there's a new sheriff in town and his name is Steak Yoshiike, Hakone. Double the portion for the same price you would pay at Steak Satou. But what about the meat and chef quality? Check out the photos : A5 Nagasaki Wagyu - check. Perfect medium doneness - check. Fat cut and reduced as a 2nd course with rice - check. My BIL and i had 2 sets EACH just to be able to try both the A5 Nagasaki and A4 Tottori. That's 300gms of pure bliss for only 14800yen per pax. And the superb ventilation system stops your clothes from absorbing the teppanyaki cooking smell. Verdict : i would seriously consider taking either the Keikyu Keihin Kaitoku from Shinagawa or the train from Shinjuku to Odawara Station and then renting a car from the nearby Nissan-Rentacar for a day trip just to go eat here. Reservations are required. If u walk-in and can get a seat, go and buy a lottery ticket while your luck holds. After you finish your meal, drinks are served in a separate seating area overlooking a peaceful pond. I never thought i would find a joint rivalling Satou in quality and beating it in price, all in one package. It took 7 years but Steak Yoshiike - hontou oiishi !

This was an experience! I did the full course meal with appetizer, soup, salad, meat, rice and desert. Let me tell you everything was cooked to perfection! This is a very intimate setting sitting a total of 16 max in the restaurant. I heavily recommend making a reservation and last call is a 7pm so if you can do it early in the day. Anyways back to the food, the appetizer was so good I forgot what all of it was there was a carrot paste and salmon, but it was delicious. Then they brought out a clam chowder and it was amazing, I don’t normally eat chowder but it came with the meal and I couldn’t get it down fast enough. Then came a small salad, nothing to write home about here. It’s a simple salad, got the job done I enjoyed it. Next was the main course which was A4 wagyu sirloin, 300 grams of it. WOW was this cooked to perfection. The chef comes out and first prepares some garlic chips, then he shows you your cut of steak and asks for your temperature. He then cuts off all the fat and starts reducing it down right in front of you, however he doesn’t let those drippings go to waste. He saves them to add extra flavor to the leaner portions of meat. Once it been thoroughly reduced he add that to your plate as per cloth crisped starch bites. He then also uses the remaining dripping to season the Daikon. I ate everything that came with this meal. I also ordered the homemade Ginger ale, not much of a drinker myself, and it was literally the best ginger ale I’ve ever had. The perfect balance between sweet and ginger. Then finally for desert I had a pistachio ice cream with lemon honey moose. The combination of the two was out of this world. Again pistachio ice cream is not my go too but this place just did everything right. So TLDR: if you’re in Hakone go here, make a reservation, do the course meal and enjoy the experience!

Odawara Flower Garden is a delightful park that has been attracting visitors for almost 25 years. It was created to provide a space where people can appreciate beautiful flowers and lush greenery throughout the year. The garden features over 100 varieties of roses, plum trees, and a tropical greenhouse with around 200 species of plum. Additionally, it includes a Japanese garden that looks particularly stunning on rainy days. This urban greening park spans across 10.
Great Spot near odawara. best for picnics. Peaceful. Nature at its best!!! Depending on season you can see variety of roses , Plum or other flowers. Inside the building their is a waterfall surrounded by Flowers, it’s cool ! FOOD COFFEE is easy to get there . You can spend whole day there !

Roses bloom in a small area, but there are many types, and each type has a written description, which is a good device to stimulate our interest. It is a pity that there is no English description, though. The park is also easily accessible from the neighboring Suwanohara Park, making it a great place for lunch, a walk, or a jog on a sunny day. There are also many kinds of plum trees, and I am already looking forward to the next coming season ❗️ 17 Feb, 2023 : There is still time until all plum tree will be in full bloom. I would especially like to introduce you to Kayoikomachi plum trees. How deceptively beautiful Kayoikomachi are! Ikina na de, koikini shiroi hana sakasu. Kayoikomachi wa haru wo shirasete. It is a neat, single-petaled flower of wild plum nature. The flowers are medium sized (about 2.5 cm in diameter) and have a faint crimson tint. Plum blossoms with a faint crimson color like this give a sense of profundity and fragility. The tips of the petals are lightly wavy, the stamens are yellowish, and the bottom of the flower is yellowish brown. Is the name derived from the song "Kayoi Komachi"? When I look at the flower again with this in mind, it seems to be filled with an ethereal atmosphere. 24 May, 2023 : Lovely roses are in full bloom, dazzling in contrast with the fresh greenery. It is the best time to see them! Also, don't miss the tuberous fruits on each of the plum trees. Moreover, if you sit still for a while along the creek, you will be able to enjoy Orthetrum albistylum speciosum(Shioka Tombo), Cercion hieroglyphicum(Ito Tombo) and Butterflies. Another must-see is Hydrangea(Ajisai), although there are only a few plants, which seem to be eagerly waiting for their season to arrive. Furthermore, in the early morning, Irises and Lotus flowers are also blooming beautifully.

This down-to-earth restaurant prides itself on using only the freshest, high-quality ingredients, expertly prepared to highlight their natural flavors. The standout Kinosuke Set Meal features an exquisite array of dried fish grilled over binchotan charcoal, delivering a delightful umami experience.
One of the few restaurants open in the evening when all the tourists have left the area. It opens for dinner at 5.30pm, we were there a little while before, so we stood in a short queue before it opened. Service very nice, a few basic words in English, we put together. The menu is also in English. Portions large and delicious. I recommend it to everyone who is hungry for travelling in beautiful surroundings. Prices acceptable.

Beautifully cooked steak with perfect accompaniments. You can spend a little or a lot based on your wagyu preference. The sake cup changes colored depending on how you have it served: cold gives you pink sakura and hot gives you blue sakura. So cute! Lovely staff, great service and tasty food. A must if you’re in Hakone, get there early if you don’t want to line up.

unexpected find in hakone! We ordered the salted salmon and steak which was surprisingly very tender and full of flavour! The salmon was cooked so well it literally melts in your mouth. But the skin was a bit burnt so I didnt eat that. They were cooked over charcoal which gave the extra wokhey taste. Their vegetable tempura was really tasty as well. Highly recommend to come here! One slight thing was that the restaurant was very smokey but not hot as there was aircon:)

Guests can indulge in stylishly designed onsen facilities that provide a perfect setting for relaxation after a day of exploration. Hakone Hotel boasts comfortable accommodations, including beautifully furnished Japanese-style rooms that promise comfort and stunning vistas.
Don’t be fooled by the “fortress” front of Hakone Hotel when you drive into the carpark. It looks sturdy and cold but you will see the concierge guys coming to you with a warm welcoming smile to greet you and help you with yr luggages! Such a perfect welcome! When you enter into the modern style hotel, you will be impressed by the interior design and gently greeted by the check in staff. We were very blessed to be upgraded to a junior suite. This being our final hotel stay before flying home, we were absolutely awed by this treat from HH! Thank you indeed from the bottom of our hearts! We loved the view of the lake from our room with a balcony. The beds n pillows are too comfortable & there were plenty of amenities. Very generous. It’s the first for us to be told to switch onsens at different time of the day so that both genders can experience the different features of each onsen. Very good idea! 👍 But I personally find these onsens a tat too hot for my relaxation. I think 2-3 C degrees lower will be ideal. The breakfast buffet was just excellent tho we wondered what happened to Japanese since we are in Japan 🤭. Around the HH there’s plenty to do- Pirate ship cruise down Lake Ashi, Togendai ropeway, hiking on either sides of HH around the lake, walking the skywalk suspension bridge etc… a perfect location. Thanks Hakone Hotel staff for this unforgettable experience! You will be highly recommended!

The hotel is situated in a gorgeous location overlooking lake Ashi wity pirate ships cruising the lake to the ropeway (cable car). Lovely views of the lake, large and comfortable rooms. What let’s them down are the food options - dinner portions are absolutely tiny, not particularly tasty and very expensive, so not a great combination. Also, very limited dining options nearby - more for lunch but hardly anything in the evening

We dined at the hotel restaurant and loved the food, atmosphere, and service. Highly recommend for dinner and/or drinks. Right on the lake with fantastic views.

We spent two nights at the Hakone Hotel and recommend it highly. The location is excellent, lake-side with beatiful views of the surrounding mountains and Mt.Fugi on clear days (we were lucky). The hotel staff is extremely helpful and attentive. Our room was quite large (38m) and well-appointed, though a bit dated. The onsen was lovely. There’s a bus stop at the hotel’s entrance and we found it convenient to the activities and museums on our itinerary. If you’re not interested in eating at the hotel’s restaurants, there are several small places to eat within walking distance.
Ben B — Google review
The location is very scenic, right off of lake ashi. There are restaurants close by. The onsen is very nice. However the rooms are very outdated, and most notably, the hotel controls the AC level, you cannot adjust it. If you are an American and like air conditioning, this isn't a good option for you.

Hakone truly felt like a treasure trove of experiences, and for me, it represented the highpoint, highlight, and even a source of anticipation during my 30-day journey through Japan. My itinerary was carefully crafted to encompass the iconic views of Mount Fuji, the unique volcanic landscape of Owakudani (complete with its famed volcano eggs), a scenic ride on the Odakyu Romancecar, the artistic wonders of the Open-Air Museum, and the serene beauty of Hakone Jinja's Peace Torii Gate. Our arrival at the Hakone Hotel was made especially welcoming by Cheong-san, who thoughtfully ensured we were well-oriented with the hotel's surroundings and the fabulous Onsen facilities, which my wife thoroughly enjoyed. Even on the morning of our departure, the hotel staff went above and beyond; the senior Security Officer kindly facilitated my early 5 am departure to photograph the Torii Gate and was there to greet me with a warm smile upon my 6 am return.

The restaurant boasts meticulous dishes where red snapper takes center stage. With various menus to choose from and even a takeout option available, Youraku is known for its Kyoto-style kaiseki. The dining experience features an array of freshly caught seafood dishes such as Sea Bream Fillet with sesame sauce and Pepper Chirimen.
For a steal of just 4378 yen, this is a kaiseki experience you do not want to miss, especially in spring. There is a cherry blossom tree right beside the restaurant and the entire experience becomes elevated with a cool glass of plum juice and fresh seafood starters. The selection was very filling and each piece had its own unique taste. The sea bream was delicious and the starters taste excellent. Make sure to book in advance online.

We ordered a lunch set menu and it was good. We wanted to order another bigger set lunch however it was sold out so recommend to make a reservation in advance. The outside view is excellent next to the bridge and river! There are few parking spots in front of the restaurant.

The Hotoriya souvenir store provides an enjoyable experience with its delicious food and beautiful view of Lake Ashinoko. The store is spacious and clean, with friendly staff that makes it easy to spend time there. The seats by the window offer a wonderful view of the lake in any season, making it a worthwhile visit no matter what time of year you happen to be in the area.
The special pancake and the self-grilled dango are heavenly. The atmosphere is calm, almost serene. Prices seem above average at first glance, but are actually very reasonable for the food and service you're getting. Staff speaks decent English and will explain to you how to eat the dishes right.

This is a cafe-restaurant located on the shore of Lake Ashinoko. The menu has many appetizing items with pictures, such as curry and seafood rice bowls, and it is hard to decide. There is also a set of dumplings and tea for dessert after dinner, which is very fun because you can bake the dumplings yourself and season them as you like.✨ The store is very spacious and clean, and the staff is very friendly, making it easy to spend time there. The seats by the window overlook Lake Ashinoko, so you can enjoy the seasonal scenery while eating a delicious lunch and sweets. I think it would be a wonderful memory no matter what season you visit, so if you're in the neighborhood, it's worth a visit.

★★★★★ The restaurant inside the hot spring is fantastic! The portions are super generous, and every dish is made with fresh, high-quality ingredients—you can really taste the difference. It’s also very kid-friendly, with options and a welcoming atmosphere that make it great for families. A perfect spot to enjoy a delicious meal after relaxing in the hot springs!

Really lovely experience. We had booked in for a private onsen experience and saw that they had a restaurant. We hadn't booked a table but there was lots of room when we arrived (around 3pm) It was a really unique and lovely experience. I queried regarding the broth to see if it was suitable for a pescatarian diet, the member of staff asked the chef to double check which was really appreciated. It was easy to order and there were lots of choices. My husband tried the sausages which he liked and he also enjoyed his Donburi. A great experience before visiting the onsen.

We ordered set menus and the food was really good. You can try all the specials they have. The price was a little bit high though. The restaurant is part of the hot springs park and you can tell the counter that you just want a meal. You can also try their hot springs if you have free time. Shuttle buses are available between the train station and the restaurant with free of charge.

The service was excellent and there was English instructions on how to enjoy the meal. Highly recommended for visitors to have a meal there after the onsen session.

Food is a but expensive but quite tasty. Options to grill food yourself or just have a pre-cooked set. I opted for a tempura set with sashimi, as well as a fish skewer. Flavors were pleasant with the fish skewer being the best. Service was quick and responsive. Good experience overall.

This was an amazing experience for me and my family. Ordered online with different language options and a wide variety of foods to choose from. Had a children’s menu which was a good portion for my child. I do recommend the beef udon noodles which is what I have had. They also have a onsen and a nearby forest adventure park. Would definitely come here again.

As you step inside, you'll be greeted by friendly service in a quaint setting filled with delightful decorations.
Very cute “mom and pop” cafe and photo studio. Photo studio has been open for more than 100 years. Everything we ate and drank was delicious. The ginger milk tasted like a gingerbread cookie, apple cinnamon tea tasted like what we call apple cider in the U.S. and the snacks were also superb.

Unfortunately the shop next to this was closed at 15:00. I had a ginger ale and a lemon cheese cake. Both were ok.

I will not lie to you, their picture of their cute train shaped pound cake drew me in. I was also looking for good coffee. Not the type of coffee that came out of a machine or a mix, I wanted real coffee with descriptions of where it came from, and roasting profiles. Other than the adorable pound cake that drew me in, the complete place is just cute, something you'd see out of a book. The serving spoons are cute, the cup and saucer used were very soothing. the place was decorated for full cuteness. We got a matcha smoothie, which was very refreshing, especially for being almost 90f outside. I ordered a black coffee, it was roasted to full city, it was very balanced, and smooth, it's of good quality. The train pound cake was not only cute but it was also tasty. An older lady waited on us, she was very sweet, and was attentive. If I'm ever back in the Hakone area I would absolutely stop by Studio Cage Shima.

Nice and cozy place with 4 tables, just 100m from Gora Station. Excellent verbal tea. Cheese cake ok, banana cake - weak, just regular sponge cake with two banana pieces aside.

I was here on 27 Nov evening. It was a very small family cafe with only 3 to 4 tables. Every single person need to order at least one drink here. If you have 4 person, you cannot order 3 drinks. I had cafe latte which was a total disappointment. See the photo. Cafe latte supposed to come with milk foam. But mine was just like coffee with milk or flat white. My friends had the Hojicha latte. Another disappointment. Only can taste the milk and no Hojicha taste. I am not sure if other patrons experienced the same quality drinks. And the price is not cheap. My one Star is for their coffee and latte.

Heiwa no Torii is a picturesque and iconic spot in Hakone, located by the shore of Lake Ashi. This big Torii gate offers a photogenic view and is a popular attraction for visitors. The area can get crowded, with queues forming for that perfect photo opportunity. Nearby, the historic Hakone Shrine, dating back to 757, offers visitors the chance to purchase Omamori amulets for protection.
An impressive torii gate on the edge of lake Ashi. It is a 15 minutes walk from the pier/bus stop. When you arrive at the gate, some people elect to have their picture taken from distance or with people in the background to avoid waiting. Alternatively, you can queue and then you can have your private time right in front of the torii gate. There are signs to say that you should limit your time to 3 minutes but unfortunately some people do take a bit longer and in the most extreme, there are people that just jump the queue. The Japanese people are too polite to say anything. We visited on a relatively quiet day but we still had to queue for the best part of an hour. I think it was worth it but I don’t think I would do the same next time. It is definitely worth a visit. Recommended.
Andrew C — Google review
So beautiful & very easily accessible. It is around a 3 to 5 minute walk from the bus stop and straight forward to get to. The only problem is that once you make it there, there is a huge line. I honestly didn’t expect there to be this long of a wait (I expected a wait, but it was crazy long) - especially given there is a three minute time limit, but I found that most travellers did not honour this. There were also many others who tried to cut the line. I think I ended up waiting over an hour just to take a few photos for around 2 minutes. Love the photos but the wait was crazy. Would highly recommend you go earlier in the morning. 1pm for us was way too late.
Lauren H — Google review
What a wonderful Torii to visit. Right in Lake Ashi, so you can pay your respects and get some amazing photos. Nestled in some amazing scenic woods. You take the stairs down. They do have a que area set up, so I imagine its get busy. You also are supposed to have 3 minutes to take your pictures, but imagine that can vary with how busy. There were only a few when we got there, so we had a few extra minutes.
Anthony C — Google review
This place is clean, quite and amazing. You can take life time memory photos here. But you have to wait here with patience in queue. I was waited for more than 1 hr as there was long queue.
Navjot M — Google review
PROS ➕ Picturesque and iconic CONS ➖ Long queue Date visited: 05/06/2024 This Torii attracts a large number of tourists every day—especially during holidays. I made the mistake of visiting during Golden Week. Just after leaving Hakone Shrine, I immediately noticed a long queue near the Torii, waiting for their turn to snap a photo or two. There were also groups lingering around the area, making it quite loud and chaotic. Through waves of people, I was able to observe the Torii from a distance. A stone platform protruded from the bank, bringing visitors close to the Torii—but not close enough to physically touch it. This platform was the main photo spot, and people took turns using it because it offered a great view of the gate. Later on, I saw the Torii again during a cruise on Lake Ashi, and I enjoyed that experience much more. The hour-long wait earlier had definitely ruined it for me.
Thang — Google review
Iconic and peaceful spot. The torii gate in the lake is one of the most famous sights in Hakone. It's a beautiful place to take photos, especially with the mountains or boats in the background. Even if it's popular, it feels calm and special. A must-see if you're near Lake Ashi.
Marcella S — Google review
felt deeply spiritual, like a gateway between worlds. Standing by the water, I felt calm, connected, and reminded of life’s quiet beauty. It’s not just a photo spot, if u stay at hakone go there in early morning before tourists attack 😅it’s a place to pause, reflect, and feel peace within.

Hakone Yuryo is a mountainside day spa located in Hakone, Japan. It offers traditional onsen baths surrounded by lush forest, including indoor and outdoor pools as well as pottery baths. The facility also features a garden, a restaurant, sauna facilities, and massage services. Visitors can take advantage of the free shuttle bus from Hakone-Yumoto train station to access the spa. Additionally, private baths can be booked in advance for those seeking a more exclusive experience.
The hot spring bath experience was relaxing.the public area has 5-6 baths indoor and outdoor combined for each gender. You can bring your own towel and cosmetics but everything provided there was pretty good. The outdoor bath was not cold at all. Going there took a while but the environment was serene. Private bath needs to be booked in advance.

Visited in December 2023 About a month in advance, I contacted Hakone Yuryo through email and made reservation for a 2 hour private onsen session. On that day, I was running late navigating the various modes of transport in Hakone so I sent an email to inform them I’ll be around 15-30 mins late. Their customer service replied to thank me for informing them, I’m so thankful that they were understanding about it. I took the shuttle bus from Hakone Yumoto station and when I arrived (fortunately I was only 10 minutes late), the staff at the front desk was so nice. He spoke to me in English - going through everything I need to know about my 2 hours private onsen session, I also got to pick out the yukata I wanted. The private room was cozy and I enjoyed the onsen very very much. There were some snacks on the table and hair dryer was also provided in the private room. When my session ended, the sky turned dark and I took the shuttle bus back to Hakone Yumoto station. I’ll definitely be back again with my loved ones ❤️

PROS ➕ Large onsen with nature view ➕ Other amenities ➕ Affordable CONS ➖ None Date visited: 05/06/2024 We arrived at the Hakone Yuryo bathhouse on foot. There were buses running from the train station, but it was already late. According to the staff, we had about an hour to bathe, so we got right to it. For a low price, we were handed a locker key and directed to the men’s section. On the way, I noticed the facility had plenty to offer—souvenirs, snacks, a garden, and a rest area complete with shelves of manga, just to name a few. There were even private baths, which I was glad I hadn’t reserved. It was already dark outside, so I didn’t linger too long. We headed straight to the onsen. After stripping and placing our belongings in a locker, we met a local who explained all the onsen etiquette we needed to know—in fluent English. I’m still grateful for that. I’d recommend looking up the rules before you even consider visiting one of these public bathhouses. Armed with fresh bathing knowledge, we entered the onsen hall. There were several pools with varying temperatures—all hot and steamy, in my opinion. I washed myself at one of the two washing stations before jumping into a pool, which turned out to be the warmest one. I say “pool,” but they were designed to resemble natural hot springs, with rocks and boulders. Fallen leaves from nearby trees floated on the surface, adding beautifully to the ambience. A low fence bordered the onsen. Beyond it was darkness, but I could imagine the view would be stunning in daylight. I soaked for a short while, hopping between pools to find the most comfortable one. I also tried the sauna, which was still running—thankfully. By then, it was just the two of us in there, but I wasn’t about to complain. We spent about half an hour bathing, just as I felt a headache starting to kick in. A variety of vending machines were installed in the locker room, offering snacks and bathing necessities. I bought and drank a small bottle of milk to stay in the spirit of things. We left just as quickly as we arrived. The process was swift and effortless. We returned the key and thanked the staff for their work, then left—but not before picking up some hotspring–boiled eggs. Overall, I highly recommend this bathhouse and any bathhouses if you’re in Hakone. While private services are available, nothing beats bathing butt-naked with strangers in a public pool.
Thang — Google review
A hot spring bath is a must do experience in Japan and there is no better place than in Hakone. Famous for its onsens and Hakone Yuryo is no exception. It was actually the last thing I did on my holiday before heading for the airport and the best way to wind down and relax after 3 weeks of non stop exploring. Check-in was simple and a breeze. Staff welcoming and friendly. Hands down, one of my favourite visits in Japan
Scott K — Google review
Everything about this place I really love! True traditional onsen with possibility of booking a private bath session. It’s great if you’re traveling with your partner. It was easy to make phone reservation because they have staff that speaks English! In the room we found everything that you need, you have option to buy a champagne or other drinks to your room while enjoying onsen. I truly recommend renting traditional kimono for 100yen.
Wer M — Google review
Beautifully done Onsen right in the forest. It's not the biggest establishment but it never felt overly full when inside. Not the cheapest either but then you're paying for the views. Bring your own towels otherwise you'll need to buy from reception.
Stephen R — Google review
Great Onsen. The location is very good, close to the main roads of Hakone but feels isolated and quiet. The onsen is very big and offers plenty of spaces to enjoy the hot springs, in pools of different sizes and different temperatures. The pools are built on the edge of the hill So that you feel you’re surrounded by nature. Also the price is fair and reasonable. Highly recommended.

I love the location of the hotel. It is across from the train station and check in was easy and fast by the time we got to the hotel at 9 pm. We were exhausted and we were so happy that we picked this hotel. The onsen was relaxing. The breakfast was included in our room selection and it was delicious. I love that there were so many choices! Our room was a decent size and twin beds were harder than we typical have in the US but still very nice. I love waking up and looking outside to watch the fog passing the mountains and hear the sound of the river. It was very peaceful and nice here. They also have luggage locks by the front desk that we locked our suitcases and a bag after we checked out. We were able to go into town and visited places by Lake Ashi and come back later in the day and grab our suitcases. We are very happy we chose this hotel and the service was great.

Beautifully located hotel, fully equipped and within walking distance to the train station. The staff is extremely friendly and service-oriented. The Onsen hot water baths are the icing on the cake. What is unfortunate is that the room lacks an English-language information folder explaining the various amenities in the hotel and what equipment is present in the room and how to operate it. The overall score would otherwise have been a 9.

This is a beautiful hotel. It has huge rooms and good facilities. They have three resumes Japanese, Chinese and French style with breakfast included. They might have reasonable charge etc for additional guest per day for stay and additionally breakfast. Place is walkable and very near the train station. They have good views to the water body. We also have good vegetation options in the Chinese restaurant.

My husband and I visited this hotel on our honeymoon from the UK. We love the location and how convenient it is to get to from Odawara. The hotel is quiet and very clean. We used the onsen which was great. Breakfast each morning was very varied and we enjoyed it. The only downside was when we visited the hotel’s pub and karaoke rooms around 7:30pm. Although the restaurant looked empty, a staff member told us it was busy and walked away without suggesting an alternative or inviting us back later. It left us wondering why we weren’t accommodated - perhaps just a language barrier, though it felt unusual.

I came with my families. Facilities is good but they charge even 5 years old kids. For me it’s kind of unfamiliar since kid under 10 years can stay for free but except this place. Some of Front Desk is not really friendly and helpful. So it’s not recommend if you come with child. They will charge you extra.
BY S — Google review
We had a wonderful stay here with our two kids (4 months old / 2 years old) The location is excellent, just a 1-2 minute walk from the station, which was especially helpful on the hot day we arrived. The hotel is incredibly accommodating for families with small children. During dinner, they provided a baby bed that could be attached to a chair, which allowed us to enjoy our meal comfortably. They also brought out the kids’ meals first, which we really appreciated. There is also a kids’ play area, which was a huge plus for parents. The only small suggestion we have is that it would be even better if it opened at 8 am instead of 9. Since breakfast starts at 7am and our 2 years old had already finished eating by 8, they were full of energy and ready to play! I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Hakone with children. It made our stay relaxing and enjoyable. Thanks!

Nestled in the heart of a volcanic landscape, Oowakudani Kurotamagokan is a must-visit destination for those exploring the region. This unique spot is renowned for its signature black eggs, which are boiled using natural hot spring water and boast an impressive umami flavor. Visitors can find an array of souvenirs on the second floor, including delightful treats like black egg buns and shokora, alongside various crafts and cosmetics inspired by this intriguing locale.
Five stars for Owakudani Kurotamagokan (大涌谷 黒たまご館). It’s the perfect combo of quirky and memorable: buy the iconic kuro-tamago (sold warm in a 5-pack), snap photos of the otherworldly sulfur vents, and—if you’re lucky—catch a postcard view of Mt. Fuji. Cracking the black shell to reveal a perfectly normal egg inside is half the fun; the taste is simple and satisfying, and the “eat one, live seven years longer” lore makes for a great travel story. The shop is well run, with quick lines and plenty of souvenirs (look for black-egg-themed snacks). Pro tips: visit on a weekday to avoid crowds, bring a jacket for the wind, and check the Hakone Ropeway status on the day you go in case of weather or gas closures.

Nice but crowded souvenir shop during the weekend. Went for the famous black egg and was hoping for a peek of Mt. Fuji, but we were not fortunate to see a clear view of the volcano. Organized queue at the cashier section. Because I am impulsive buyer, bought a lot of stuff, from ref magnets, a souvenir shirt, and many food they advertised as only sold in this shop.

Loved how organized the cashier line was though! And yes… my impulsive self couldn’t resist — magnets, shirts, snacks… you name it, I bought it. 😅🛍️

Owakudani Kurotamagokan is the go-to spot for local souvenirs! They’ve got tons of goodies to choose from, perfect for bringing a piece of Hakone back home. Don’t forget to grab the famous kuro tamago — the iconic black eggs said to add years to your life. Such a fun and unique stop!

Owakudani Kurotamagokan is a fun and unique spot in Hakone. I loved trying the famous black eggs—they’re cooked in the volcanic hot springs and are said to add years to your life! The views of the steam vents and surrounding mountains are really dramatic and give you a sense of Hakone’s volcanic landscape. It can get crowded, especially on weekends, but it’s worth the visit for the experience and the photos. A quick stop that’s both tasty and scenic!

Nestled in the charming area of Gora, "COFFEE CAMP" is a delightful cafe brought to life by TENT Inc., which also runs a popular guesthouse for international travelers. This inviting spot features a cozy cafe on the first floor and an aromatic roastery above, where you can indulge in authentic coffee and espresso drinks.
I stopped by Coffee Camp while exploring Hakone and ended up really liking it. I got the cafe latte and the cheese hot dog set with soup and everything was really good. The hot dog was cheesy and savory, the soup was warm and comforting, and the latte was smooth with a nice roast flavor. Quick, attentive service despite the large amount of patrons. Order using a QR code. The place was fairly busy when I went, but it still had a really chill vibe. The music playing in the background made it feel cozy and relaxed, even with the crowd. It’s a great spot to take a break and enjoy something warm before heading back out into the cool Hakone air. Definitely a spot I’d come back to.
Miffy — Google review
Cute spot in Gora and one of the only to take card, it seems. Also appears to be full of tourists! Really glad they are now open for dinner and super enjoyed their 5-piece appetizer plate and taco rice. Flavors great and presentation excellent! Had high hopes for their coffee the next morning and it was not good. Both the espresso and pour over were dark and bitter; needed milk to make it drinkable, which was a bummer. Definitely more of a coffee and milk shop than straight pour over/espresso. Service great, atmosphere great, food great, prices great. Would go again for food! Would not suggest coffee if you are hoping for the good coffee you might have experienced elsewhere in Japan.
Jana H — Google review
A nice place, offering excellent espresso. Apparently they have their own roastery. They offer food too, all nicely made and western style. The only drawback seems to be the popularity of this place. So you might have to draw a number and wait patiently, half an hour for us.
Peter U — Google review
It is probably easier to walk here rather than driving as the place doesn't provide a parking lot. Totally recommend the egg on egg and tiramisu. The interior has a relaxing ambience and overall a comfortable experience.
W. N — Google review
This one is a solid 3.5. The service was great and the servers were very accommodating even when we had a large party with kids. The coffee was pretty good however the food was only decent. The selection was pretty limited and they only had very basic items. That being said, this is a coffee shop so in the end the drinks and service/atmosphere triumph the food in ratings. Very cool coffee shop to visit if you are in Hakone!
Tn23 — Google review
Best latte in Japan! Food is excellent. We enjoyed both the pumpkin and the egg on egg open face sandwiches. Definitely the place where all of the cool kids hang out 😉
Jane S — Google review
This Western cafe opens early and serves excellent coffee, conveniently located within walking distance of Gora Station. It's a perfect place to stop by before beginning your day of exploration. While the food was average with limited choices, the overall atmosphere was pleasant. Drinks were great.

definitely a must visit if you're in the area. good food (5 stars). good service (5 stars). nice place to sit and relax. Last order is at 4pm, they close at 4:30, plan your trip well! Highly recommended. Will visit this place again!

Nestled in the captivating Hakone region of Japan, Lake Ashi is a picturesque caldera lake that offers a serene retreat from urban life. The crystal-clear waters reflect the iconic Mt. Fuji, adding an ethereal touch to the landscape. Visitors can enjoy boat tours on the lake and explore hot springs while taking in breathtaking views of the surrounding nature. The area also offers accommodation options for those looking to extend their stay and immerse themselves in this idyllic setting.
I was having a pirate boat ride here and the atmosphere surrounding is amazing. The flow of water and freezing weather was amazing. Amazing view from the middle of lake and watching all around places is amazing.

Lovely weekend. Breathtaking views on the cable car the rope cars and the pirate ship. Plenty to see around the lake with walking trails and a great bakery.
Eddy W — Google review
Lake Ashi is an absolute gem nestled in the heart of Hakone. The stunning lake views, with Mount Fuji often visible in the background on clear days, create a picture-perfect scene. The serene waters are perfect for a boat cruise, and the surrounding trails offer a refreshing nature experience. The iconic Torii gate of Hakone Shrine by the lake—it’s a sight to behold! A must-visit spot for anyone seeking tranquility and breathtaking landscapes.

Relaxing visit, nice picturesque view, cool breeze while aboard the ship. Given the opportunity, will definitely return.
Ben S — Google review
That's a very special place, feels very different than anywhere else I went in Japan. When I got there, it was very cloudy, so I couldn't really enjoy the views. But the eerie aura of clouds rolling over silent, forested hills left me really impressed. Getting a boat trip is a good idea (they even have a bar onboard).

Nestled in the stunning Sengokuhara region of Hakone, Forest Adventure Hakone is an exhilarating outdoor park that invites visitors to immerse themselves in nature while enjoying a variety of physical activities. This eco-friendly adventure park features a ropes course, climbing wall, and zip-line, all designed to engage with the towering trees that define the landscape.
This was soooo fun! I've been looking for a long time for something like this, and it exceeded my expectations. I'll definitely be back. They have English safety videos and don't cancel reservations just because it's raining (we went in the rain and had a fantastic time). If you don't reserve, though, I think that's fine as long as they have room. The course was exciting and challenging, and the staff was kind and accommodating. The ones on shift spoke a little English, but everything was pretty self-explanatory, so if you don't speak Japanese, don't let it keep you from going on this adventure. My only advice though: if it's wet, bring a change of clothes, and DEFINITELY buy the gloves. Also take the bus up from the station. It takes like quintuple the time walking uphill.
Sydney S — Google review
A fun way to spend a couple of hours. Perfect for teens. The guides were helpful with explaining how everything worked. It felt very safe
Sue J — Google review
A surprisingly adventurous place nestled among the hills. The canopy course is too easy while the adventure course is doable by anyone with a minimal level of fitness. The entire course can be completed in about 2.5 to 3 hours. The sore muscles after workout here can be relaxed in the nearby onsen which also serves some wonderful food. It's a perfect getaway from Tokyo for a day trip.
Jeremiah S — Google review
Very professional. Not too difficult. Few options with varying degrees of difficulty. Overall a good place to spend about 90 minutes with kids
Yaniv A — Google review
This was a pretty fun place to spend a few hours. This was the first time I went zip lining and it was a very unique experience. It doesn't take long to learn what to do but some of the obstacles you need to get across can be challenging and exhausting if you aren't ready for it. The 4 courses will take you maybe 2 hours to finish, but I think you can do them as many times as you like. bring a change of clothes as well, since you may get a bit dirty depending on how you land on the zip lines.
John A — Google review
Its a very good place to visit with family… All the Staff are very polite and one of them speaks in English. Videos of activities are shown in English for those who don’t understand japanese.
Sarita V — Google review
You must come here if you visit Hakone! Only a short walk from the main strip up from Hakone-Yumote Station, the forest has been transformed into a playground. The courses are super fun and you can enjoy climbing, swinging, zip-lining, and balancing on a variety of styles of obstacles. It's so fun to be up in the trees and it is such a unique experience. We did the Adventure course for 3600 yen/person. It took us two hours to complete and we had a blast! I recommend taking the opening slot. We had the 9:00 AM reservation and got to be the first on the course. It quickly became busy after 10 AM.
Katie W — Google review
We did the easiest course. It was so much fun and still quite high up in the trees. The briefing was in Japanese but there was an English handout available. You’re all time safely connected to the robe and don’t have to switch from one to the other safety robe like in the more difficult course. Therefore, it is very suitable for children. I would recommend to go to the onsen and relax after the exercise. The fee shuttle buss will bring you there in a three-minute drive.

Lodging
Fukuzumiro is an upscale hot spring hotel with streamlined rooms and a cozy bar. The multi-storied three-story wooden building, Kyoto Fushin, showcases the aesthetic sense of craftsmen from the past and is particularly known for its exquisite use of high-quality bamboo. This traditional Japanese inn, founded in 1890, has been recognized as one of the top 20 Japanese heritage sites for its architectural design and appreciation of 'the beauty of bamboo.'
Anyone who would give any part of Fukuzumiro anything less than five stars has no sense of magic, whimsy, culture, history. From the moment you step through the doors it's like you've been transported to another time, even another place--it really does feel like magic, how the building unfolds as you walk down the halls. I've been fortunate to travel extensively in my life but I've never been anywhere so richly meaningful, and I loved everything about it: all of the unique and thoughtful design flourishes, the patient and generous staff, the beautiful private and public baths, the sound of the river right outside my room. I'm vegetarian, and I'd come from a stay somewhere renowned for their vegetarian cuisine; the food at Fukuzumiro was better, and it wasn't close. I hope everyone who visits truly appreciates what an immensely special place it is. And I hope someday I'm able to return :)

A Unique Step Back in Time—But Not Without Its Flaws Staying at this ryokan truly felt like stepping into 1800s Japan. The traditional atmosphere and architecture were immersive—almost like historical glamping. The tatami rooms, sliding doors, and garden views created a peaceful, nostalgic charm that I genuinely appreciated. Service was absolutely impeccable. The staff were gracious, attentive, and clearly take pride in maintaining the spirit of omotenashi (Japanese hospitality). Every interaction felt thoughtful and warm. However, the onsen was a disappointment. While I understand and even value preserving original character, cleanliness should never be sacrificed for authenticity. Moss growing on the walls and an overall lack of hygiene made it difficult to enjoy what should have been a relaxing experience. There’s a fine line between rustic charm and neglect, and unfortunately, the onsen crossed it. With some attention to cleanliness, this ryokan could be truly exceptional. It's worth trying once but not again
Franklin P — Google review
My wife treated me to a night in this fantastic ryokan for my birthday. If you’re looking for a conventional hotel stay, you will be disappointed. If you’re looking for an authentic experience following in the footsteps of travellers from a bygone era, you will have an incredible time here. Convenient location, a short walk to the bus stop (which had space for our luggage). Outstanding hospitality & an unforgettable kaiseki dinner. I recommend trying different onsens at night & in the morning so you can compare them (much more exotic than a boring shower in your room). Restorative, restful, relaxing.
Seth B — Google review
Wow! We went way above our daily accommodation budget but it was so worth it! The place is incredibly beautiful, quiet and offers an amazing Japanese experience. They have beautiful rooms overlooking the river, the onsen (hot baths, 3 private and 2 shared) are open 24h and are a great way to start/finish the day. I could write 2 pages about the food! They prepared us a delicious kaiseki dinner and breakfast with lots of different things and every single one was delicious. The food gets served in your room so you have a very private and cozy experience. 6 stars to the lady (sorry, forgot the name) that looked after us serving the food and preparing the room. She was friendly, kind and very patient in explaining all the food and the way to properly enjoy it. Without a doubt one of the best hotel experiences I’ve ever had. Thanks!
Mattia M — Google review
Absolutely amazing and a highlight of our trip to Japan. Traditional style rooms, waking up to a river view, excellent service, they are willing to cater to dietary requirements and made me feel the safest I've felt in Japan with food. The onsens were beautiful, and everyone gets at least 50 + 25 mins in the private onsens, with extra time bookable if available. The attention to detail is fantastic - right down to asking for your height at check in so that you get a yukata of perfect length - a treat for 4'11 me and my 6' partner who can struggle with such things.... Did it blow out accommodation budget? Yes. Is it good value for money? Also yes. Once you've factored in the multi course dinner and breakfast, and onsen, it's really very reasonable. One thing to note though - it's a traditional style roll up mattress. If you like a very firm mattress you'll like it, but I did struggle a bit. Not the hotel's fault I have a bad back of course! Also worth knowing that if you come by train then it's a 5 minute walk up a hill and steps back to the train station - no fun with big bags. Either leave them in a coin locker and bring an overnight bag, or use Yamato to get your luggage delivered to your next hotel, or come by bus which drops you right outside.

This was such an amazing place to stay! The ryokan is gorgeous, the staff were all very kind and helpful, and the food was delicious. Our room came with a private bath, which was incredible. A wonderful experience!

What an incredible place! We were looked after the moment we stepped into the Ryokan and all the staff were very kind and patient as we tried to speak to them in Japanese. The room was absolutely incredible, such a quiet and beautiful place to rest place in the middle of our trip. Our private onsen bath with all the amenities was just what we needed and it was wonderful to be able to go in whenever we wanted. The private garden which came with the room was beautiful and had a fantastic view of the river. The food we were served in our room was delicious and we ate everything! It was the best place we stayed on our trip. I'm so glad we booked this immersive traditional Japanese experience. どうもありがとうございます!

The Hatajuku Parquet Hall museum is a place where people can see traditional woodworking techniques in action. The hall is filled with intricate patterns that are created using different types of wood.
Very cute little museum and gift shop with a space to do workshops as well. Just five minutes away from the Hatajuku busstop. We chose to make our own coasters from pieces of wood, you have the choice between 18 or 30 pieces and you can follow a few example designs or think of one by yourself. A very sweet lady gave us instructions for the coaster as well as lots of context information about the woodworking traditions in Hakone (in Japanese, although I think the instructions are demonstrated clearly enough to follow along even if you don't speak the language). She also showed us her coin tray that she's been using for decades as well as how to work some of the beautiful wooden puzzle boxes. We ended up with our own cute coasters, as well as two puzzle boxes and few keychains ae souvenirs. Overall would highly recommend a visit!
