The Hakone Open-Air Museum, established in 1966, aims to blend nature and art seamlessly. It spans across 77,000 acres of Japanese countryside and showcases an extensive collection from renowned international and local artists such as Miro, Rodin, and Yoshitatsu Yanagihara. We arrived at the Hakone Open-Air Museum with just 30 minutes to spare before closing—and while the staff at the ticket counter kindly warned us that it wasn’t ideal, I couldn’t pass up the chance to see Japan’s first open-air museum. So, with running shoes on and camera gear in hand, we dashed in at 4:30 PM and made the most of every minute.
Despite the time crunch, we managed to see a surprising amount. The kids loved the interactive sculptures, and we snapped some fantastic photos with our tripod as we raced through the grounds. It was a whirlwind, but totally worth it. If you’re short on time, don’t skip it—just be ready to move fast!
The museum itself is a stunning fusion of nature and art, with over 120 sculptures spread across beautifully landscaped gardens and lawns. Established in 1969, it features works by legends like Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, and even Pablo Picasso, whose pieces are housed in a dedicated two-story pavilion. There’s also a colorful stained-glass tower called the Symphonic Sculpture that you can climb for panoramic views of the park and surrounding mountains.
One tip: find the entrance ahead of time. We spent nearly 10 minutes wandering around trying to locate it, which ate into our already limited time. The museum is just a short walk from Chokoku-no-Mori Station on the Hakone Tozan Railway, but signage can be subtle, especially if you’re in a rush.
If you can, give yourself at least a couple of hours to explore. There’s a foot bath, kids’ play areas, cafes, and rotating indoor exhibitions that deserve more than a quick glance. But even in a sprint, the Hakone Open-Air Museum left a lasting impression—and I’m so glad we didn’t miss it.

Because the museum is in open air you need to choose for a day with good weather ( not a rainy day ).
We especially enjoyed the Picasso Pavilion !
A very clean place and we suggest to spend approx 3 hours for the visit.
By the way if you guys are a little bit tired there is a nice cozy coffee shop , with great Italian Coffee , ice cream , soft drinks and sandwiches.
A huge parking space on the spot which cost 500 yen - we came by car.
A highly recommended place if you are in Hakone.

Wow, wow, wow. They shouldn't call this a museum. It is an art gallery extraordinaire. Beautiful environment, many external installations allow for interaction.
The Picasso and other indoor galleries are equally impressive.

The museum was one of my highlights of a visit to Japan, it is a unique experience with many art pieces in beautiful tranquil surrounds as you wander the gardens with the backdrop of the mountains. There are also some kid friendly areas including the climbing net where many children will spend at least an hour, the maze, and then when tired the pockeT area. Make sure to enjoy the foot Onsen that will rest those weary feet. There is a self serve ticket machine at the entrance so no need to wait in line.
Simply stunning. A lot of thought and effort has gone into making this place special. Loved the mini Picasso museum in the middle.
Top tip - try to arrive as close to 9am as possible to avoid the hoards of day trippers coming in from Tokyo
One of the most incredible museums I’ve ever visited! The installations are so huge and fun to walk through. Even on a cold rainy and snowy day we walked the entire grounds and saw each exhibit. There’s a sweet hot foot soak area about mid way through where there is also a gift shop and little cafe. Don’t miss going inside the tower with all the stained glass, it’s other worldly.
There are a couple of ticket machines to the left side of the entrance, if you’d like to skip the line. Overall it’s an interesting outdoor museum. It was nice to walk around even in the rain. The gift shops are also very nice
Fantastic art exhibits, the Picasso building houses a rather large collection of several of his art mediums, easily worth the 2000 yen to see the many outdoor sculptures. A wonderful couple of hours.

Hakone Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine located in a lush lakeside setting. It features a small museum and is known for its iconic red torii gate that can be spotted from the waters of Lake Ashi. The shrine is believed to bring luck in battle and has been revered by prominent historical figures like shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu and ruler Minamoto no Yoritomo.
It is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Kanagawa Prefecture. The torii gate by the lake is one of the most Instagram-worthy spots for a photo. But be prepared for a long queue, especially on weekends when it gets extremely crowded. The Hakone Shrine itself is huge, with many areas to explore. I recommend setting aside at least half a day to fully enjoy the experience and not miss anything.

Little bit of a climb up the steps, but we'll worth it. There are a few shrines throughout the area, but this is the largest of the bunch. You can go up and make your offerings. Set in the forest, very beautiful. The cedar trees are humongous, just amazing. The parking lot is not that far away. There is also a small path you can follow instead of the steps. It's just so peaceful and scenic, a must stop.
An absolutely beautiful and serene shrine. I loved how the tall trees towered over our heads and the way the green of the forest mixed with the redish orange colors of the shrine. The architecture was simply stunning. And of course the torii gate on the lake is the main celebrity here. Just know that there’s a crazy long line to get a picture with it at all times, some saying it was an hour of waiting. We didn’t wait, we decided to admire the main part of the shrine instead. Don’t forget to get some water from the shrine spring, it’s said to bring good luck.

Tucked between mistdrenched cedars and the still waters of Lake Ashi, Hakone Jinja feels less like a shrine and more like an accidental portal to Studio Ghibli. The iconic red torii gate, emerging from the lake like a spiritual submarine hatch, is Instagram bait but somehow still sacred.
Founded in 757 AD, back when Fuji was still updating her firmware, the shrine once drew samurai warriors seeking divine WiFi before battle. These days, it draws influencers in linen shirts whispering “so zen” before posting a Reel with lofi beats.
The walk up through ancient trees is calming except when the fog gets too thick and you start questioning your life choices and the location of your travel group. Bonus: there’s also a side shrine for a nineheaded dragon deity. Because oneheaded dragons are just too basic for Hakone. 1200 years of vibes and foggy drama, blessed.
📸 Tip: Come early morning for mist, mystery, and minimal humans. Otherwise, enjoy the queue to touch a gate.
Definetely a must stop! Regretted not doing the tour around the lake which included seeing so many more Tori gates. Beautiful place to visit and very spiritual.
Beautiful shrine and definitely worth going, however it’s very busy on most days and the wait to take a photo with the tori gate and lake will be around 20-40 minutes
Very busy shrine but in a beautiful area. There are a few trails and small areas off to the side where you can't find some peaceful moments of reflection. The amulet and goshuin areas were very busy but at least efficient. They have a good sized bathroom facility that unfortunately was in pretty rough shape during our visit. While the grounds are beautiful many of the buildings are undergoing some repairs and scaffolding abounds. Overall if you are in Hakone you will visit it is sort of the point but I hope it's not the only shrine you see in Japan.

Hakone Gōra Park is a stunning Western-style hillside botanical garden located in Hakone. This French-style landscape park offers a picturesque retreat throughout the year, showcasing vibrant azaleas and cherry blossoms in spring, blooming hydrangeas around the central fountain in summer, and a breathtaking display of red and orange maple leaves in autumn. During winter, the park transforms with enchanting Christmas lights. Visitors can also enjoy scenic views of Mt.
A lovely little park—small but charming. Although it’s already winter and most of the flowers and trees are dormant, I can imagine the garden looking even more beautiful in spring and summer.
That said, even in winter, the park still has its own appeal. The fountain is elegant, and there are plenty of cute and picturesque corners to explore. It was a peaceful and enjoyable walk, and I appreciated its quiet beauty despite the season.

Enjoy the silence and peacefulness in the Gora Park! Stopped by as part of the Hakone Free Pass and the place didn’t disappoint! Grab a coffee or lemonade and sit down by the fountain, walk in the green house or just wander around - this place is energising and making the hot weather more bearable!
A very well layed out park with French origins. You don’t have to walk miles to see things but there is much to see and enjoy. Like any park or garden it does depend on the seasons as to what you see. The park is in Hakone high up in the hills which creates for a very unique climate and therefore an opportunity to see things which you would not see elsewhere at that time of year.
It has a really interesting craft centre, properly organised and run to quite a high level.
The shops and restaurants are not tacky in any way or ridiculously expensive.
Loved the rose ice cream real value for money especially with the coupon at the entrance!
Toilets and other facilities are way up to standard nothing old and just about to break or smelly!! And clean!!!

Cute little park with free entrance if you have Hakone freepass. Right next to Hakone open air museum. We had a lovely afternoon tea with a rose theme in one of their cafés.
Small but charming park with many pretty flowers. It is within 5 minute walking distance of the cable car station. Has a ‘treasure box’ with a stamp for children to stamp their books. Closes at 5pm

Nestled in the serene natural beauty of Hakone, Japan, the Pola Museum of Art is a modern museum that boasts a unique underground design and offers visitors a forest trail experience. Established in 2002 by the Pola Art Foundation, this museum showcases an impressive private art collection amassed over 40 years by Tsuneshi Suzuki.
A really beautiful museum surrounded by nature 🌿 They have different exhibitions (depending on when you are coming) and a fixed catalog gallery that is equally amazing!!! The transportation there was easy since they have a shuttle (you can check the schedule in Gora station or from their website).
Obsessed with the nature trail and the outdoor sculptures, makes Pola Museum of Art differ from other museums.

Such a cool museum. We saw the COLOR exhibit and it’s one of the best exhibits I’ve ever seen. So good we had to buy the book. There are lockers to store your backpack and umbrellas if it’s raining. These were especially helpful for the nature walk that was through a gorgeous forest. Art outside is my new favourite thing. Highly recommend if you’re in Hakone.
As with most things Japanese the harmony of the art work, the architecture of the building and the surrounding nature make for a very appealing visit.
There is both a bus stop out front as well as a free shuttle to and from Gora. There are free lockers for personal items as well as cables to secure large suitcases in case this is your last activity on the way out.
The colours exhibition was memorable and well curated. Do also have a stroll in the forest. There are short, medium and long options for the walk and you get to see some of the fantastic supporting structure that makes this building float on the mountain.
The Japanese stewartia trees make a compelling argument that nature is the best artist.

Amazing museum, one of the nicest I’ve been to both because of it’s selection of art, it’s architecture, and it’s natural surroundings. Very convenient free shuttle from Gora station every 30 minutes. Today was a rainy day but the museum is definitely enjoyable anyway, we also walked the natural path around it and it was beautiful in rainy and cloudy weather.
Only downside for me was the restaurants vegetarian/vegan food. Only one option which actually was a plate with meat removed so it was not very filling at all (spent ¥6.000 for 2 people).
We caught the local bus up to the museum which was really easy to do, lovely drive up there through the beautiful lush green vegetation, we had lunch at the restaurant which was absolutely superb before wandering around the museum, amazing artwork very thought-provoking, with modern and classical arts on display

Nestled in a picturesque setting, the Hakone Venetian Glass Museum, also known as Hakone Garasu no Mori or Hakone Glass Forest, is a delightful museum that focuses on Venetian glassware. It boasts an impressive collection of exquisite glass pieces from various periods, with a special emphasis on those from the Venetian Renaissance.
A beautiful museum. Close to a bus station so it is easy to access. We went here on a super foggy day, so the garden was like a fairy tale. However it might be more beautiful on sunny days since the glass would be more beautiful under the sunlight. Indoor things were not that special, but the garden was very beautiful. Worth to visit.

WOW!!! The sparkles here!! You have to go on a sunny day or at least with the sun peaking through the clouds. The way the light hits the outdoor pieces is UNREAL! Loved all the indoor pieces too. Chihuly is always amazing to see in person. We had just been to Venice about a year earlier and it was so lovely to see it replicated so well here in Hakone! You will not regret exploring this museum, absolutely recommend!
Fabulous museum, both indoors and out. A brilliantly varied mix of static glassware indoors, glass sculptures outside, a concert, and an excellent restaurant (ideal for lunch). I was expecting a tourist trap but was very pleasantly surprised.
Whether you're looking for entertainment or just shade and relaxation, you mustn't miss this one.
A museum that displays glass art throughout history. The museum has a spectacular garden and a very large souvenir shop. The place is beautiful and highly recommended for a visit.
We went to this place during the Obon holidays and we completely loved the experience. Despite the poor weather, this place was packed and they had so many exhibitions to explore. Since we were on a time crunch to take our little one back home for his bed time, we were not able to explore everything but we know we will be back again to explore the rest.
The restaurant offered a very good food; my favorite was the scone tea set. But I was told that they have a great lunch menu so we will want to try that next time. Live music is the best part of this restaurant.
This place will be a great place for couples looking for something different but also for families with different interests.
One of the most recommend place when you visiting Hakone sengokuhara. A lot of beautiful glasses here. You can take a lot pic too. Such an aesthetic place. Also, you can find a delicious bread here...
Not for European Tourist. It’s kinda built like Italy/ Venice in particular. But it’s really not impressing if you know Italian countries or have been in in a glas museum in Europe. Best part is the globe inside 😅 and the price is 1800 yen for adults.

An interesting venue to visit when you are in hakone. A variety of different display of glasswork to enjoy.
This isn’t far from the outdoor sculpture museum so can do both on the same day.
There arent many food options around but we had a big breakfast included from our hotel.
Suggest not to expect too much for food around this area.

Nestled in a serene woodland area with streams and hot springs, the Okada Museum of Art showcases an extensive collection of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean cultural treasures. Opened in 2013, this museum houses a diverse array of early-modern Japanese paintings, East Asian ceramics, and Buddhist sacred statues dating back to the 11th century. The modern building seamlessly integrates into its natural surroundings while providing over 5,000 square meters of exhibition space across five floors.
One of the my highlights of visiting Japan. We went late and only toured the first floor. Photos were not allowed there which gave us opportunity to immerse ourselves in the display. Will definitely comeback again.

Superb museum of Japanese, Korean and Chinese art and ceramics. We saw a special exhibition on the 53 stations of the old Tōkaidō which had old versions of 55 woodcuts. Quite special.
We spent 4 hours there, it's quite large. There's an udon restaurant in a lovely setting, and a footbath cafe.
The only problem is that ¥2,800 is quite steep. I think it kept people away, which means it was fairly quiet, even on autumn Sunday. They are also very strict about not bringing in phones or other camera devices, all the way to having a metal detector. There's lots of lockers at the entrance. The building is nice as well but the interior is kept quite dark.
Definitely a top-notch, world-class museum for Japanese, Korean and Chinese ancient works of art worth checking out. No photography allowed inside.

This place is special, far exceeded my expectations. It’s rather nondescript from the outside, but the art treasures it holds inside were tremendous. No photography allowed, which makes the experience more enjoyable, you don’t have the masses snapping endless pics.
Okada Museum of Art is a special exhibit of true ancient artifacts and woodblock painting. Many items exhibited are from centuries ago even some artifacts go back to centuries before BC. The museum is a must visit for any Archaeologists and even Historians meanwhile for tourists who aren’t interested in such area/field, I will recommend to prioritize visiting the Hakone Open Air Museum as it is better suited option and will definitely be more interesting…
It may be noted that mobile phones, cameras and other items are not allowed in Okada Museum of Art. The museum include an open air foot bath which can be accessed separately for 500¥ or included for free as part of your ticket.
Extensive pottery ware from the Han Dynasty, Joseon era, and Edo period. Pottery lovers would love this place. No pictures allowed inside but it’s okay. After visiting the museum, take a soak outside at the Ashi-yu and enjoy a parfait while you are at it. Very enjoyable!
The purpose I visited here was to see the exhibition, “Utamaro and Hokusai ― Creators of an Era ―”. I have often visited Hokusai’s exhibitions many times but I was satisfied with seeing his famous artwork in this museum, “Under the Wave off Kanagawa , from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. In addition, you can enjoy Asian art and craft in the permanent exhibition area.

Onshi-Hakone Park, located on Togashima Island south of Lake Ashi, was once a summer retreat for aristocrats and a state guest house. Covering approximately 15.9 hectares, the park boasts various types of sakura trees, particularly mame sakura, which bloom during spring around Mount Fuji and Hakone. The former Imperial villa on a small peninsula offers stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains, including Mount Fuji.

Nice sightseeing destination. After the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, highly recommend visiting Hakone for some peace. Do be warned, this park is in a very mountainous region and thus is quite a hike. Views of the surrounding mountain forests and lake are absolutely worth it.
There's nothing special about this park, it's pretty normal. We didn't stay there long, maybe on a sunny day it would be better to use it as a place to relax and stay longer. In some parts of it there's a really nice view of the lake next to the mountains.
Taking the coastal path was a little challenging but beautiful views! All worth it! Glad we made it last minute before heading home.
The imperial Island gives you an astonishing view over lake ashi.
The Parc has some steep stairs when choosing the way by the lake. Some paths were closed because of the deep ground caused by the winter spring weather.
Great spot to see a beautiful view of Mt Fuji. Signs are very helpful throughout the park. The grounds crew does an amazing job to keep the park looking beautiful. Easy to access via public transport with a bus station right outside of it. Glad we stopped here!
It is a very nice park with amazing views and some very beautiful hidden spots. I would love to spend more time there. But be prepared to climb some stairs :(
Generally a very worth going to park! There was multiple parts of the park which showed a different view of Mt Fuji or different scenery. The best part was that this park had minimal people and it was pure scenery! Amazing.

Hakone Checkpoint, located in Hakone-Machi, is a replica of a guardhouse from the Edo era used to inspect travelers and goods along the Tokaido Highway. The site also features remnants of the old highway lined with ancient cedars. History enthusiasts will appreciate its significance as an important site for transportation and communication during the Edo period.
A well organized historical fortress to secure this district. You can see lots of heritage stuffs and designated layout and artwork here. Good to take a look at this place after having the pirate boat cruising. Enjoy.

A fascinating glimpse into Japan’s history!
Hakone Checkpoint is a well-preserved historical site that gives you insight into the Edo period’s travel and security system. What an amazing place, it was a shame that the weather was not so great, but you can get the atmosphere of the place. Did go on the ferry, but the trip lasted 15 minutes and went 1.5K, would love a longer ride on the lake. But a beautiful and calm place.
One of the best places in my overall Japan trip. The detailed rebuilt checkpoint buildings are amazing. The woodworking detail and the preservation is something to be proud of. The staffs are very helpful in explaining and the view is stunning!
A rebuilt old checkpoint fort. The old buildings have been reconstructed with care for the historical accuracy. It has brief placards talking about life at the fort, roles and responsibilities for staff members, and the construction of the fort. I would recommend walking up the hill to the watchtower for the view.
Visited Hakone Checkpoint and really enjoyed stepping back in time! The reconstructed gates and guardhouses are super well done, and the small museum has lots of interesting historical details. The lookout point offers amazing views of Lake Ashi and the surrounding mountains. Easy to walk around and the staff are friendly. A great stop if you’re exploring Hakone—history buffs and casual visitors alike will enjoy it!

A relatively small but calming Japanese style moss garden with exhibit halls showing paintings of a Japanese artist and also some ancient Japanese pottery. Parts of the garden were closed off and there was some repair works when I visited at the end of September 2024. There is also a small tea house where you can buy tea and a small snack to sit and admire the moss garden. As it was empty and looked dark inside, it looked closed and I didn’t go in. I took my time at this garden/museum and stayed around 1 hr 45 minutes. I would say if you’re the check-box type of traveller, an hour would be more than sufficient. There is free parking within 3 minutes walking distance of the entrance.
the museum is not for me, but the garden is worth visiting really pretty. they have a small matcha cafe with matcha sweets.
The museum wasn't interesting for me. It's all about portret etc. But the parc is pretty. Nice to escape for a calming stroll however it was quite small.

Hakone Kowakien Yunessun is a hot spring hotel offering a unique experience with its themed pools and water attractions. Divided into two areas, Yunessun requires bathing suits while Mori No Yu offers traditional hot spring baths without them. The resort features the Rodeo Mountain waterslide, designed to resemble rapids, as well as family-friendly onsen experiences.
We had great time.
The kids loved the slides and the various themed pools.
The outdoor pool in front of the view of the forest is wonderful.
The weather was a bit cold, so sitting in hot water when outside is a bit cold was a great feeling.
We were also lucky that the place wasn't crowded.

Our family of 4 rented a car just to come here for a day. Place was spacious, plenty of lockers and different themed warm pools. Price is relatively cheap. Outside onsen with the view was closed for maintenance which was disappointing. We did the fish nibbling your feet which was fun. Place desperately needed an upgrade though. Everything is so run down, the bottom of the outside cave pool was peeling off as I was walking, scraping my foot. If you are from the US, don’t bother coming here as the water parks are much bigger and newer and kids could actually play like kids. Kids are expected to play quietly here 😂. Place was built in 2001 and seems like they never had an upgrade, just minimal maintenance. I don’t smell any sulfur smell to the pools like a hot spring should though.
Pretty kitschy kind of place for the main waterpark but it was fun to see the different themed areas. Was pretty good for our younger kids but I don’t think teenagers would have as much fun…. The traditional onsen area was much nicer but families have to split up and go by gender , kids are allowed there as well ( younger than 6 can go with either parent I think). Worth half a day if you’re looking for a way to have some fun with younger kids and do a traditional onsen
Gross! We visited the swimsuit pool area as visitors, did not stay at the hotel. It was crammed full of people. Some surfaces were slippery and almost all areas except the rest area upstairs were not clean. Locker rooms were slimy and dirty. If youre from the U.S. and know Great Wolf Lodge, it was like that but worse. The staff at the front were very nice, that was about the only good thing about it. We didnt stay long, even the kids were grossed out.
I felt like the attendant had a bad attitude when I checked in. The first thing they did was rudely tell me I could get towel with my hotel voucher but next time I would need to pay, and understand what she might have been trying to tell me but the way she said it struck me as being unprofessional. I mentioned I didn't have a bathing suit so they said I could just use the onsen which is what I wanted to do anyways, what they didn't tell me is the onsen only opens at 11am, it was 10:15, like why hold back what is contextually valuable information so I don't waste both our times checking-in in the first place.
We came to the water park. It was hideous. For children they can run around and have a good time. It is not for adults at all. So busy and tacky. Not relaxing at all..I did come on a weekend. The staff were very helpful but unless you have small kids don't bother.
It is an amazing experience. Growing up in America I've only ever been to water parks that have giant slides and rides that almost make you vomit. But at "Hakone Kowakien Yunessun" it's completely different. Instead of intense, loud, and chaotic (how an American water park usually feels) it's incredibly relaxing. Being able to chill in pools of coffee, wine, or even MATCHA! It even has its very own hot spring where u can look over into the gorgeous mountains. This place also seems great for the whole family by having easy and cheap dining with delicious meals, and several great areas for kids. It was also incredibly easy access with wrist bands that would let you get food and drinks and some other stuff as well. Once you leave you will pay for your bill, from all the stuff you got with your band, obviously. Overall it was such a peaceful experience I will never forget.
We used a private Onsen room, and it was amazing!!!! Great atmosphere with a view to the mountains full of trees, and privacy! Highly recommended!

Small beautiful place;Not a lotto do. Things that you can do here; take the ropeway to the top station to see Mount Fuji which may or may not be in function due to wind etc,A nice walk to the sea side,visit restaurants or stores for souvenirs or visit museum or aquarium or even take the motor boat with the bus there(another foam of enjoying the sea without the ship)etc. Just bear in mind the last time of the bus or the ferry if you will be using those.
This botanical garden is set by the lake and you can be lots of blooms on trees, and on the ground especially in spring. Mostly level terrain but fair bit of walking. Wear comfy shoes, hat, sunscreen, take water. Great place for photography. No entry fees. Cable car station to go up the hill is nearby.
A great outdoor experience. From the boat tour to the cable car ride up the mountain I'm not sure which was more stunning to experience. I would recommend doing the cable car ride up to explore and hike up a bit. Then do the boat tour as you relax on the lake and enjoy the ride, scenery, and breeze of the waters.

This was soooo fun! I've been looking for a long time for something like this, and it exceeded my expectations. I'll definitely be back. They have English safety videos and don't cancel reservations just because it's raining (we went in the rain and had a fantastic time). If you don't reserve, though, I think that's fine as long as they have room. The course was exciting and challenging, and the staff was kind and accommodating. The ones on shift spoke a little English, but everything was pretty self-explanatory, so if you don't speak Japanese, don't let it keep you from going on this adventure. My only advice though: if it's wet, bring a change of clothes, and DEFINITELY buy the gloves. Also take the bus up from the station. It takes like quintuple the time walking uphill.

A surprisingly adventurous place nestled among the hills. The canopy course is too easy while the adventure course is doable by anyone with a minimal level of fitness. The entire course can be completed in about 2.5 to 3 hours. The sore muscles after workout here can be relaxed in the nearby onsen which also serves some wonderful food. It's a perfect getaway from Tokyo for a day trip.

This was a pretty fun place to spend a few hours. This was the first time I went zip lining and it was a very unique experience. It doesn't take long to learn what to do but some of the obstacles you need to get across can be challenging and exhausting if you aren't ready for it.
The 4 courses will take you maybe 2 hours to finish, but I think you can do them as many times as you like. bring a change of clothes as well, since you may get a bit dirty depending on how you land on the zip lines.
Its a very good place to visit with family… All the Staff are very polite and one of them speaks in English. Videos of activities are shown in English for those who don’t understand japanese.
You must come here if you visit Hakone! Only a short walk from the main strip up from Hakone-Yumote Station, the forest has been transformed into a playground. The courses are super fun and you can enjoy climbing, swinging, zip-lining, and balancing on a variety of styles of obstacles. It's so fun to be up in the trees and it is such a unique experience. We did the Adventure course for 3600 yen/person. It took us two hours to complete and we had a blast! I recommend taking the opening slot. We had the 9:00 AM reservation and got to be the first on the course. It quickly became busy after 10 AM.
We did the easiest course. It was so much fun and still quite high up in the trees. The briefing was in Japanese but there was an English handout available. You’re all time safely connected to the robe and don’t have to switch from one to the other safety robe like in the more difficult course. Therefore, it is very suitable for children.
I would recommend to go to the onsen and relax after the exercise. The fee shuttle buss will bring you there in a three-minute drive.

The paintings on display are also impressive. I was delighted to find a collection of ink wash paintings, which I personally love. The local artists are incredibly talented, and their work adds a wonderful cultural touch to the experience.

This place has the best views. You need to pay the entrance fee for the cafe but definitely worth it. The museum istels is small but has some amazing pieces. The glass pieces were a nice surprise and fantastic, I wish they had more. People saying it is not impressive clearly have no appreciation for actual art.

This is a nice museum if you’re interested in modern Japanese art, and want to sit and view the amazing view of the lake and large Torii gate of Moto Hakone. If you only have time for 1 museum in Hakone area I would skip this one though, as the open air museum is much more impressive. The view here is really amazing though!

It’s a very small aquarium and you can see it all in about 30 mins. But it does have a good range of fish and some seals.
Warning: if you are using the Hakone Free Pass. There’s only one bus every hour and we got stranded as the bus was full and wouldn’t let anyone one. There’s response to well how do we get back was: get a taxi.
Super small. Good place to go when it’s raining. Wanted to shake hands with the otters but we missed the show time. Only available twice a day.
One because I can't give 0. Passed by because I had the free pass hakone which included this. There should be a some ministerial action against this place in order to close it. Never seen animals so poorly treated in an aquarium. 35 days in Japan. Dirty places, penguins looked like they just wanted to die, saw 1 mammal completely abandoned in a room over a counter with absolutely no conditions to hold him and unsupervised. The only negative thing I have on a 35 day trip to Japan. Criminal.
It's a decent small aquarium, however you can feel it's age as the aquarium definitely needs some renovation to look more modern. Price is ok, it's about 1000yen for entry so there is nothing much to complain about it. If you have gone to other Japanese aquarium this will feel small. Overall still worth seeing their seals and baby otters which are newborns and worth coming down to see them.
Our kids had great time there. But the parking fee was too expensive! When we went here last year, the parking fee was free...
Anyway, the aquarium has two buildings. And the new animals "otters" were so cute. I felt their space was too small for them. But my kids were so happy to see them. They have a few show events everyday and you can enjoy. Please check their show schedules before you go!

Hundreds of types of fishes, Tiger fish, clown fish, crabs, salamander, jelly fish, turtle, and may sea creatures. There is a seal show around 15 mins. Beautiful scenery all around. There is a small shopping store with hundreds of souvenirs to take back including wooden carved paintings and special lock puzzle and candies.
Small Due to high winds, ropeway may be closed and you may get a chance to view the aquarium.
Small but fun. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit but it was nice since I was in the area. I didn't find anything too significant about it. But I loved the shark tube and watching them swim overhead.

Old Tōkaidō Road Ancient Cedar Avenue - East End is a 500-meter-long forest path lined with over 400 cedar trees, some of which are more than 350 years old. Planted to provide shade for travelers, these towering trees create a serene and comfortable atmosphere. The avenue stretches from Moto-Hakone to Onshi-Hakone Park and was originally planted in 1618 by Matsudaira Masatsuna.
Beautiful, peaceful and calming walk. Near to main road. Many tall, big cedar trees. We didn't take the complete walk as we were out of time but recommended if there's time.

It's beautiful, but more so if you understand the history. Make sure you take Google Translate along the way, so prepare for spending more time to translate and read the sign posts which are at regular intervals.
A nice short and flat walk that is amongst large cedar trees although can be muddy after rain
We began our walk but due to very steep slippery sloped paths we decided to turn back and walk the more accessible Cedar pathway to the Hakone Sekisho Checkpoint
Although it's a short walk, striding amongst these giant ceder trees is an awe inspiring experience. The path is easily accessible from the main road of Hakone. The whole walk is maybe 15 minutes, when walking slowly. The trees are huge, and like all nature places in Japan, the path is super clean, and very well maintained. The easy path is suitable for families with young children, as it's super easy for everyone.
I recommend you to start at Amasake Tea House, then walk towards the lake. Wear good shoes since the copple steps make it really hard to walk on. Bring a bell?... there were bear warnings but we didn't spot any.
We went during May and there were several rainy days. Luckily, we chose a clear day for this trail and it was beautiful.
This old sequoia alley is beautiful i spent time strolling there after other sightseeing were closed and I do not regret it.

Lovely temple up a shortish climb from Fukuzumiro. Shame there isn't a view across the valley. There is not much there besides a series of gravestones but a very peaceful place worth spending a short walk if you have time on your hands.
For the more adventurous, there is an unkept trail that starts from behind this temple. There is also a near little cave/spring behind the temple. And you can see some more interesting/historical parts of the temple at the back too.
Went for a morning run to the temple. The hill is a bit of a challenge but well worth it when you get to the temple.

Heiwa no Torii is a picturesque and iconic spot in Hakone, located by the shore of Lake Ashi. This big Torii gate offers a photogenic view and is a popular attraction for visitors. The area can get crowded, with queues forming for that perfect photo opportunity. Nearby, the historic Hakone Shrine, dating back to 757, offers visitors the chance to purchase Omamori amulets for protection.

When you arrive at the gate, some people elect to have their picture taken from distance or with people in the background to avoid waiting.
Alternatively, you can queue and then you can have your private time right in front of the torii gate. There are signs to say that you should limit your time to 3 minutes but unfortunately some people do take a bit longer and in the most extreme, there are people that just jump the queue. The Japanese people are too polite to say anything.
We visited on a relatively quiet day but we still had to queue for the best part of an hour. I think it was worth it but I don’t think I would do the same next time.

So beautiful & very easily accessible. It is around a 3 to 5 minute walk from the bus stop and straight forward to get to. The only problem is that once you make it there, there is a huge line. I honestly didn’t expect there to be this long of a wait (I expected a wait, but it was crazy long) - especially given there is a three minute time limit, but I found that most travellers did not honour this. There were also many others who tried to cut the line. I think I ended up waiting over an hour just to take a few photos for around 2 minutes. Love the photos but the wait was crazy. Would highly recommend you go earlier in the morning. 1pm for us was way too late.
What a wonderful Torii to visit. Right in Lake Ashi, so you can pay your respects and get some amazing photos. Nestled in some amazing scenic woods. You take the stairs down. They do have a que area set up, so I imagine its get busy. You also are supposed to have 3 minutes to take your pictures, but imagine that can vary with how busy. There were only a few when we got there, so we had a few extra minutes.
This place is clean, quite and amazing. You can take life time memory photos here. But you have to wait here with patience in queue. I was waited for more than 1 hr as there was long queue.

This Torii attracts a large number of tourists every day—especially during holidays. I made the mistake of visiting during Golden Week.
Just after leaving Hakone Shrine, I immediately noticed a long queue near the Torii, waiting for their turn to snap a photo or two. There were also groups lingering around the area, making it quite loud and chaotic.
Through waves of people, I was able to observe the Torii from a distance. A stone platform protruded from the bank, bringing visitors close to the Torii—but not close enough to physically touch it. This platform was the main photo spot, and people took turns using it because it offered a great view of the gate.
Later on, I saw the Torii again during a cruise on Lake Ashi, and I enjoyed that experience much more. The hour-long wait earlier had definitely ruined it for me.

The torii gate in the lake is one of the most famous sights in Hakone. It's a beautiful place to take photos, especially with the mountains or boats in the background. Even if it's popular, it feels calm and special. A must-see if you're near Lake Ashi.

As we sailed, the panoramic views were breathtaking. Whether it was the glistening water at sunrise or the distant coastline at sunset, each moment felt picture‑perfect. The gentle rocking of the ship, the fresh sea breeze, and the sound of waves created a serene atmosphere that made it easy to relax and simply enjoy the journey.

A bit cloudy today, but nice boat ride across the lake. Ship is great, if you get seasick easy, I don't think you will have a problem. Didn't feel it rock once. Upper deck is great to take pics and get views. Interior, better for those are afraid of water or worried they might get sick.
The Hakone Pirate Ship from Tōgendai Port is a solid photo-op and a relaxing little ride if you’re already in the Hakone area — but probably not something to plan your day around.

What’s good:
• The pirate-ship design is fun and visually striking, especially from the dock or water, so it makes for great photos. 
• The views of Lake Ashi, surrounding mountains, and, on a clear day, Mt. Fuji are lovely. 
• The trip is fairly relaxing; the ship ride is smooth. It’s a nice break from walking, ropeways, etc. 
What falls short:
• It’s mostly just transport (port to port) in a themed ship; there isn’t a lot to “do” on the ship itself. 
• Crowds can get annoying, especially in non-first-class sections. Seating may be limited or uncomfortable if you don’t upgrade. 
• The scenery and photo opportunities are weather-dependent. If it’s cloudy or misty, you may not see Mt. Fuji or get clear views. 
Conclusion:
If you happen to be nearby and want a pleasant ride with some nice scenery, it’s worth it. But don’t let this be the highlight of your Hakone trip — it’s pleasant and charming, but not particularly special once you’ve done it.
Great ferry service that connects different parts of Hakone. The tickets are quite affordable (less than 2000 yen) and can be reserved up front which I recommend or bought at the counter. The hakone free pass can also be used here if you have it.
I did not upgrade to their premium tier which lets you be on the front section of the ship. It didn't really seem worth it and from all other parts of the ship you have great views as it is.
The Hakone Pirate Ship from Tōgendai Port was such a fun experience! Sailing across Lake Ashi on a pirate-themed cruise felt awesome — the ship looks great and even has a cozy café on board. If you’ve got the Hakone Pass, it’s a total steal since you can ride this (and other attractions) for free. On cruise we are!
We had a Hakone 2 day pass and took the trip on the pirate boat both days. Sunday was very busy with long ques for the rope way. I would highly recoment it. Get a Hakone pass 1 or 2 days and plan you trip for a week day if you can. The day was clear for us and we saw Fuji clearly at the top of the rop way.
It was absolutely fantastic, great views of Mt Fuji. Would recommend doing this trip. It's set im a gorgeous little village.
A good ship tour. The ship was clean and enough place to see the lake. We went on a rainy day so could not see Mount Fuji. The lake and the area around were beautiful and green. The Hakone pass also included the ticket for the tour.

The ferry service to get from one side of the lake to the other is quite useful. It is much nicer than riding the bus, and the views along the way are great. I could pass on the fake pirate theme, but it doesn't hurt for the kids. They push getting the first class tickets, but I didn't see much of an advantage when we were there with low congestion. It might be worth the space if the ship is crowded.
It's a pretty quick cruise not that expensive. Very nice scenery. Boats are very nice and well maintained. It's a big day from Tokyo on trains, cable car, ropeway, boat, bus and train again. A good day out in the country hills.

Since this cruise was included with the pass I bought upon arriving in Hakone, I took the opportunity to ride it. The check-in process was quick and easy, though the wait was long due to the ship’s schedule.
There were seats and shops around the port—perfect for stocking up on snacks and drinks. Unfortunately, most shops had already closed by the time I finished checking in. I managed to grab a cookie and a coffee drink from a small café nearby. The weather was less than ideal: cold, cloudy, and foggy, which meant we wouldn’t be able to see Mount Fuji from the lake.
When our ship finally arrived, it looked even more colorful and festive than it had from afar or in photos. People boarded and disembarked in an instant; I followed suit.
Passengers who had purchased first-class seating were led to a separate hall. I was in the standard class, but chose to sit outside near the flagpole to enjoy the lake view. Many others joined me later, while some retreated indoors to escape the chilly wind.
I spotted several local attractions peeking through the thick treeline—some I had already visited. The most recognizable were, of course, the Peace Torii and a luxury hotel, just to name a few.
Since the ship was actually a ferry and didn’t sway much, I didn’t feel as seasick as I usually do on regular ships or airplanes. The whole trip went smoothly and without incident. We reached the port on the opposite side of the lake in under an hour.
All in all, this is a must-do in Hakone—especially if you’ve purchased a pass. Just be mindful of the schedule; I nearly missed the cable car because of it.
The view is good even without first class tickets. If you're worried about space and want to make sure you have comfortable seating you can give it a go. But the first class upper deck doesn't have shelter, while the ordinary deck has multiple outdoor tiers, one of which is roofed by the top deck, so you get to sit in the shade while getting a view unobstructed by glass. The ship was pretty clean, but I thought the views pretty ordinary. I didn't see mt Fuji at all. I mostly took the ship as a way to get around. It was a decently comfortable ride, though the chairs on the outside decks were hard and not cushioned. The ship itself is very beautiful though.
Great cruise. If no clouds over the mountains you can see Mount Fuji. I suggest to get the 2 way pass, since you can get off on the different tourist spots and hop back on again till you see them all.
Hakone Sightseeing tour is pretty expensive for how short it is. I will say the ships are nice. They offer good drinks and snacks
The Hakone Sightseeing Cruise is a fun way to see Lake Ashi and the surrounding mountains. The pirate-ship-themed boats are really cool, and the views of the lake and Mt. Fuji (on a clear day) are amazing.
For the best experience, I recommend going early, riding on a clear day, and getting first-class seats—it’s less crowded and the view is way better. Relaxing on deck and taking in the scenery was one of the highlights of my Hakone visit.

Hakone Craft House offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in traditional Japanese crafts. Visitors can participate in hands-on workshops where they can create their own works of art. The facility provides various experiences such as glassblowing, sandblasting, and pottery making. Even for English speakers with limited Japanese knowledge, it's easy to join the classes and the staff are attentive and helpful.
An amazing gem in Hakone. Took my 11 year old here and did a number of activities—electric pottery wheel, glass blowing and lamp bead making. All which were perfect for her age, as well as adults. For electric pottery wheel, they taught her 1:1 and was patiently working with her in English. I recommend booking online at least a day in advance. Price-wise, note that the price online lists the base price, there’s a lot of add on options once you get there that can add up quickly; but for the most part, the base price will still cover the basic designs.
We will definitely be back when we return to Hakone. Will probably book an experience where our entire family can partake in.

We had soooo much fun here. We didn’t get a reservation before we came and there were none left on the website on the day of, but we took a chance and they were able to fit us in! It does take a lot longer than you think as there are so many options to choose from when making your design. Prepared to be here either all morning or afternoon. We also wanted to do both a hairpin and a phone strap, but time wise we were only able to make 1 bead and just assemble a phone strap from the premade beads. The staff were very accommodating with our limited Japanese and worked very had to communicate with us. Would recommend to anyone.
Today I went to the Hakone park and along the route I saw a cute shop where they sold handmade glass jewelry. They also facilitated a workshop and I signed up for a glass bead workshop. The staff was so nice and explained every single stap. If you had any question, they happily answered. Also the choice of beads to complete your necklace, earring or whatever it is you are making, is huge! So expect to spend some time on designing the final piece of art.
All in all it was a very special event and it got me a very special memory of my visit to Hakone! If you want to make a unique piece of art, then look no further and book yourself a workshop. You won't regret it.
Such a fantastic experience! I’ve always wanted to learn lamp work and the staff were so patient and friendly. You pay for the base cost online (very affordable) when you book and then you are able to select add on options like gold leaf and what type of accessory you would like. 10/10 loved our experience. Walked around the gardens while we waited for the glass to cool down.
So much fun. I chose to upgrade to the earrings and had fun making them. The staff helps you 1 on 1 to make sure it will come out well. They let me do the whole thing but guided my hand when I let my wrist drop. Had fun decorating then with gold flecks too. I was scheduled for 1145a but they got me in right away around 1115a and I was done with the entire process by 1205.
This was a great side trip to Hakone on my Japan trip. Cute little mountain town and after walking up a VERY steep hill there’s the park complex. It does charge to get in. But if you have the Hakone Free pass you get into the park for free as well as a discount on purchases. We showed up without a reservation in a weekday and it was fine. But we made the large glass beads over a burner and it was really fun to do some glass work. 10/10.
Great high quality gifts. The works for sale here are from actual craftspeople and are of very high quality. The staff is friendly and understand a good amount of English. There are also experiences here and the availability seems to be pretty good even day of.
I bought a beautiful mug from this craft house and I loved its simple, yet, elegant design. I purchased this mug on Oct. 3rd 2024: exactly one year ago! Very strange it broke while pouring 95 degree Celsius water in for tea. Really sad this happened.

One the best free attractions in Hakone better than some paid ones. The grass field from autumn until March is quite beautiful with a golden hour gotten it's expanse. Have a jacket at hand as the place gets windy. Also wear comfortable shoes as it is a gravel path with a bit of an incline.

Amazing spot - 100% recommend it was definitely one of the most amazing spots we saw around Hakone. The pictures don't do it justice - the grass fields with the forest and mountains in the background are simply splendid. You can only reach out by car so it was also not as crowded as the other popular places around Hakone.
Expansive field of susuki ( Pampas) grasses. The view can change greatly depending on the weather or time of day. If you're lucky you'll see some kiji (pheasants) flying around.
There is one main path to follow up the hill in the midst of the grass which is pretty cool.
It's very rocky and uneven so leave those stilettos back home for this trip!
There's a Lawson across the road and a few small cafes/ tea shops in the vicinity but not much else.
A short walk away is free parking by the sewage treatment centre, with a huge lot. There are other parking spots nearby charging a small fortune, but don't be fooled

Despite the chill, the scenery was completely worth it – a serene escape into nature! Highly recommend for anyone traveling to Hakone in autumn.

That's a very special place, feels very different than anywhere else I went in Japan. When I got there, it was very cloudy, so I couldn't really enjoy the views. But the eerie aura of clouds rolling over silent, forested hills left me really impressed. Getting a boat trip is a good idea (they even have a bar onboard).

Kuzuryu Shrine Shingu, also known as the Nine-Headed-Dragon Shrine, is a vibrant red Shinto site located near Lake Ashi in Hakone. Legend has it that a monk subdued a nine-headed dragon that demanded human sacrifices from villagers, leading to the shrine's establishment in 757. Originally established in the year 757, the Nine-Headed-Dragon Shrine [Kuzuryu-jinja] reveres a nine-headed dragon. According to ancient legend, the dragon who lived at the bottom of Lake Ashi demanded a human sacrifice from the local villagers. A monk named Mangan Jyonin saved the villagers by subduing the dragon causing it to renounce its evil ways. The dragon became revered as a dragon king, and these days, a festival is held every year on July 31st to celebrate the nine-headed dragon king.

Nestled in the highlands of Sengokuhara, The Little Prince Museum is a cheerful tribute to the 100th anniversary of 'The Little Prince' and its author, Antoine de Saint-Exupery. This museum beautifully brings to life the beloved children's tale through a charming French townscape and a picturesque European garden designed by Keiko Yoshiya.
So sad this place is closing March 31st because it truly is spectacular for Little Prince lovers. It's a whole little village and follows along the story line as well as honoring the author. There was a cafe and restaurant and gift shop too that I was not expecting. I'm so grateful I was able to go before they close. It was busier than usual when I went but still enjoyable.

If you are a fan of the Little Prince, this is the museum you should visit. The gardens, buildings, and exhibits well express the world together and made me want to read the book again.
My one-year-old daughter was also happy to be able to freely walk around in the beautiful garden. She got a bit scared though with some dim areas in the exhibition buildings.
Even the information pamphlet is so cute. The menu at the café was also designed with the Little Prince theme, and I highly recommend this museum.
If you are a fan of Little Prince you will definitely like this place. I was not a fan but yet I was quite entertained by the museum. The exhibits were so well made and exquisite. Love the details and secrets they left along the way for visitors to uncover. The only problem was this place was pretty out of the way.
You would NEVER have imagined that such a place can exist anywhere ESPECIALLY in a remote area of Japan. It was just so well- done ; explained & detailed ; books translated in every language and most importantly a full replay of every step of Saint Exupery’s life and the Little Prince book. Something to definitely visit. Prices can also be combined with other visits in Hakone. So think of going there first in order to buy tickets at discounted prices.

Im a huge fan of the Little Prince, but i didnt know much of its creator; Antoine de Saint-Exupery. And this museum tells a lot about him. From his childhood until he went missing on his expedition and never had known that his book(s) bocome the world's darling.
The museum its self is well thought. Entering this museum is like going inside to the Little Prince book. Youll meet him, the fox, the sheep, the king and the other characters - not to mention the iconic well and airplane.
Too bed you cant take any picture inside the exhibition hall. But i really enjoyed my visit to this world's only museum devoted to the most heartwarming story. The ambience made me feel like i was strolling in one of France countryside villages.

The entrance fee is thousand something yen which is valuable to pay among all the museum in Hakone. With a wonderful outdoor area and detail explanation with “the Little Prince”. I post a lot of outdoor area since it is good for photo. However, there are lots of area which is not suitable to take photo, which means you better come to visit.

Very clean place. It was interesting to learn about how fish cakes are made. They have a large gift shop right by the train station, and the museum is just across the street. The museum is free unless you want to take a fish cake making class.

If your in the area, the Kamaboko class was a delight. Although it’s all in Japanese, pretty easy to follow along by just watching the instructor. The two types you make are cooked at different speeds, one at 20 min the other at 70. Unfortunately the 70 min wait was too long but the stick one we made was delicious! Visited Kamaboko museum during my time at 東工大 in 2013 as a trip planned by the school staff. It was pleasant, as we watched the kamaboko production, then contributed, then listened to a lecture, then finally ate some.
A lovely museum explaining everything about fish cakes that turn out to be a very ancient craft in Japan. There are cooking classes that require registration (probably worth it especially with kids), but the rest of the museum doesn't need an advance reservation. There is a frequent bus from Odawara station to the museum. The shop next door is huge and you can try the local fish cakes in a small tasting set there.
What a generous place, it is huge and so many things to do. They even offer free parking. You can do experience here of making kamaboko but you should make a reservation before 2pm.
Loved the super fun Kamaboko making class. Pre-book in advance online or try on the day in person (as we did on a Wednesday). So professionally run, great facilities with helpful instructors. We had limited Japanese skills and we learnt about appreciating the craft. We have never eaten such a fresh Kamaboko.
I did not realize how much history there is for this product and I have a deeper appreciation for it seeing how much they put into sustainable operations, the local area and how much activities there are for both kids and adults to do here. There were walk through exhibits, demonstrations and hands on classes as well a full view of where they make their products.
We bought an assortment of their specialties. Their fish cakes are softer, springier & fluffier than normal ones

It's very beautiful during the autumn season. The atmosphere is great, with cool, refreshing winds. The ancient Japanese architecture is definitely worth the visit.

The gardens are beautiful and the tea room very nice. Id suggest stopping by if you have some free time, but wouldnt suggest going out of your way to see it. The museum itself is small and has some very interesting pottery pieces but definitely not a must see, especially with Gora Park nearby. Still happy we went though.
The pictures displayed on Google Maps are NOT from this museum. They belong to the Hakone Museum of Art. This museum does not have much to see, just a few pictures of Mount Fuji and a random exhibition.
The gardens are extraordinary. Large rocks, a cascading stream, moss lawns tended carefully by hand. Shrubs and trees arranged into a delightful scene. The tea house is a serene place to view the gardens while enjoying refreshment. The museum is 5 large rooms over 2 floors, mostly displaying pottery dating back hundreds of years. No context, explanation, or 'all singing and dancing' multimedia like people want these days, but interesting and often beautiful objects worth seeing. There is a smaller museum hosting more pottery and some historical information about the founder of the museum.

Nestled in the heart of Sengokuhara Onsen, Hakone Botanical Garden of Wetlands, also known as Hakone Shissei Kaen, is a captivating showcase of approximately 200 species unique to Japan's wetlands. The garden boasts an impressive collection of over 1,100 highland plants and various forest and grassland species.
Went during light shower rain but that made it even better!
Staff were kind, ticket buying process was easy, you can park in the car park nearby for free.
Not many flowers when I went, but you see many crawdads, a carnivorous plants section, and can walk around 7 more sections of different themes(swamp, wetlands etc). There is a little shop there too for cute bits and bobs.

If you’re into plants or nature person, then recommend! Depending on the season, there are different flowers blooming. They have few carnival plants, which was cool. Entrance 700 yen.

Loved this place! It was so beautiful with lots of birds and lizards. The wildflowers were stunning in the natural scenery. There was a fantastic carnivorous plant exhibit while I was there. You can spend a lot of time exploring the environments. Great if you love nature and plants. The store has some cute merch and good soft serve.
The botanical garden is very nice but not worth it. No actual flowers are growing and for tourists - you can’t really read any of the descriptions. Wouldn’t advise to pay an entry for that.
The COFFEE PLACE of the botanical garden however is AMAZING. Food is great. Music is great. And coffee is delicious. Very different from anything we’ve had in Japan. We had the ham & cheese; avocado and butter & jam sandwiches and they were all veryyyyy good. Open until 4pm but would advise to go for a nice breakfast or lunch.
A must experience for this who love to hike / walk thru exquisite gardens . Know that this is built into a mountain side so you do climb gradually upwards in areas

The Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Natural History is a large, modern museum with exhibits on the earth's origins, flora and fauna. It's an excellent attraction for those interested in dinosaurs and ancient history, as well as being situated in a beautiful location near Hakone-Yumoto.
Outstanding attraction with massive scale. Entry is surprisingly inexpensive and kids were free which is a huge plus for a museum. Great displays that dwarf the viewer. Highly recommended if you’re in the area, especially on a rainy day. Bathrooms were only on the third floor when we visited.

I should have taken my.son early. He loves all the exhibition here. Same quality as national museum in Tokyo. They have 2 floors and you can see all the creature and geography. They also have a library. You can spend at least half day.
Great for both adults and kids! The space is large with lots to see and explore. Tickets are extremely affordable, and free parking is a big bonus. Even during peak season, it wasn’t too crowded, which made the visit really enjoyable. Don't expect many English descriptions though..

Low-key Zen. Nice one. Acres of wonderful forested walking paths on the hillside behind the temple buildings ... filled with old trees and statuary. We were impressed by the numerous volunteer locals meticulously clipping away at the intruding weeds. Parking, lavatory and cemetery included at no charge!

This is a wonderful temple to visit. It was a lot of fun to wander the hill covered in statues, and look at their expressions. They ranged from joyful to angry; bored to pleased, and every emotion in between. It was also nice and quiet to sit down and meditate for a while.

If you are trying to visit Hakone you shouldn't miss this place. Very peaceful environment. You can enjoy Autumn leaves in November or snow in winter.We visited in November so we could see Autumn leaves🍁. Some bamboo trees are there. Statues are great. They are built from stones. If you are hungry you can enjoy noodles near this temple as soba noodles restaurant is at the entrance of the temple. From this temple pompass field is also near.
A historical Buddhist Temple. Worth visiting during your Hakone trip. It's very close to Ashi Lake. Besides, it's on the way back to Tokyo.

Beautiful Buddhist temple hidden amongst the suburb. My brother and I went around 5pm, and we were the only ones there. It's small, quiet, and so peaceful. Definitely come in and have a moment of peace to yourself here ♡

The Hakone Geo Museum is a small but informative museum that tells the story of the volcanic forces that created Hakone. Kids and adults will enjoy learning about volcanoes and the rocks and minerals they are made of here. The staff is helpful and able to speak English, making it easy for visitors to understand what they're seeing. The museum also has exhibits on the history of Hakone, as well as onsen (hot spring) baths.
You need to go here on your ropeway journey, it's super informative and allows you to better appreciate Hakone as a whole. They give insight into the history of the volcanic activity and the hot spring sources of local onsen. ¥100 entry for enjoyable information. Also a lot of the tourists don't go in, so it's more private and allows a moment of reprieve during the rush to "see it all."

A hit. We loved the cute stamps, two interactive stations, and back room with videos and lots of dioramas. I think it would be a fun place for any families or a field trip for a classroom.
A perfect place to stop by to get the context of the area ( what is this steam and tools we're taking pictures with, how volcanos are created, and what's up with black eggs) and look at hot springs with better understanding and appreciation ( there is a great interactive display on that). A lot of information is in English, to get the most of it up to 1 hour might be needed. For the price of 100yen I can't complain about anything.
The Hakone Geomuseum is honestly such a hidden gem! I wasn’t expecting it to be this fun, but it’s super interactive, and I learned a ton about the local rock formations and the crazy volcanic history around Hakone. There are hands-on exhibits, which make it way more interesting than your typical museum. And get this—it's only 100 yen to get in! Totally worth it for what you get. If you're in the area, it’s definitely worth checking out.

Hakone Tozan Cable Car Sakumoyama Station is a convenient way to travel up the steep mountain, offering smooth and effortless rides for up to 18 people at a time. The cable car provides stunning views of Mount Fuji and Tokyo on clear days, although clouds and fog may obstruct the scenery. At the station, visitors can relax at the cafe or observation deck upstairs, enjoying reasonable prices for coffee and craft beer.
We stopped at Sounzan Station before hopping on the Hakone Ropeway and ended up spending more time than expected—in a good way. Grabbed some coffees to go, a cotton candy smoothie (yes, it’s as photogenic as it sounds) and soaked our feet in the outdoor foot onsen while taking in the mountain views. Honestly, the scenery from the foot bath alone was worth the stop—clear skies gave us a stunning look at the valley.
Getting tickets was easy, and we boarded the gondola right away. Everything ran smoothly and felt well-organized. The station itself is clean, with a few shops, snack options and a relaxed vibe. If you’re passing through, definitely take a few extra minutes to enjoy the foot bath and the view—it’s one of those small moments that sticks.

Long long line, waited 40 minutes in outside then inside line for a 10 minute ride on gondola. Not worth it, if there is a line outside just take the bus to the next station where the volcano egg is.
The lines for this cable car throughout every station were crazy, this is on a weekend in late March.
Avoid weekends here. Go weekday and very early right when it opens. Noon is too late. If you are staying local in Hakone check that your hotel shuttle starts early enough to get you to gondola station for 845AM when it opens. Possible with a day trip from Tokyo.
Did not see Mount Fuji even though was a 10/10 visibility online so that was disappointing. If you do a day trip, check visibility before going.
You don’t need to buy a ticket, you can tap your Suica card to board. We did not know that and bought a day pass in Odawara which was not worth it as the gondola lines were so crazy everywhere we ended up taking the buses which were not covered by the pass and a taxi in the evening as the gondola also stops running early. Consider just tapping your Suica card for the routes you need.
The Hakone Tozan Cable Car up to Sōunzan Station was a really enjoyable experience! The ride itself is fun — you get to climb through lush forested mountain terrain, which feels peaceful and scenic. Once you reach Sōunzan, the views are lovely: you can see valleys, hills, and in clear weather Mount Fuji in the distance.
The station facilities are pretty nice, clean and well maintained, and there are a few shops and vantage points to take photos. The staff were friendly and helpful, which added to the overall good impression.
If I had to pick one downside: it’s a bit crowded at peak times, and the views depend heavily on the weather. But overall, definitely worth doing if you’re exploring Hakone or want a relaxing outing.

Awesome view of the valley at the outdoor gallery which even has a footpath for you to relax at while soaking in the view. The indoor area is spacious too.

Now this station has it all really. I mean, you take a cable car ride from Gora up the side of a steep mountain - which was a smooth & effortless way up. We saw people walking it...I suggest you don't.
Now before you gat on the ropeway, be sure to spend some time on the patio, where you can soak your feet and take in the amazing alpine-esque views.
This is part of the journey on the Hakone circular route. It is a relatively short journey serviced by a single cable car going up and down. If you cannot get on because it is full or you missed it, you have to wait for the cable car to come back before you can board. For this reason the wait can be quite long as other people have commented and when the cable car arrives, everybody squeeze in there like sardines. The journey itself is pleasant and the view is nice if you’re at the front. During peak season, I expect the wait to be quite long. It may be worth exploring other modes of transport for this short journey to avoid spending valuable time waiting. It was a very nice experience and I would recommend.
This google location is labeled incorrect. The “cable car" specifically refers to the Hakone Tozan Cable Car, a short, steep-gradient vehicle running on tracks between Gora and Sounzan stations, while "ropeway" refers to the Hakone Ropeway, which uses gondolas to travel over a longer distance. The ropeway is actually a cable which just adds chaos to naming situation. Please be aware that the “Cale Car” can get very hot as it doesn’t have air conditioning.

Roses bloom in a small area, but there are many types, and each type has a written description, which is a good device to stimulate our interest. It is a pity that there is no English description,though.
The park is also easily accessible from the neighboring Suwanohara Park, making it a great place for lunch, a walk, or a jog on a sunny day.

How deceptively beautiful Kayoikomachi are!

It is a neat, single-petaled flower of wild plum nature. The flowers are medium sized (about 2.5 cm in diameter) and have a faint crimson tint. Plum blossoms with a faint crimson color like this give a sense of profundity and fragility. The tips of the petals are lightly wavy, the stamens are yellowish, and the bottom of the flower is yellowish brown. Is the name derived from the song "Kayoi Komachi"? When I look at the flower again with this in mind, it seems to be filled with an ethereal atmosphere.

Lovely roses are in full bloom, dazzling in contrast with the fresh greenery. It is the best time to see them!
Also, don't miss the tuberous fruits on each of the plum trees.
Moreover, if you sit still for a while along the creek, you will be able to enjoy Orthetrum albistylum speciosum(Shioka Tombo), Cercion hieroglyphicum(Ito Tombo) and Butterflies.
Another must-see is Hydrangea(Ajisai), although there are only a few plants, which seem to be eagerly waiting for their season to arrive.
Furthermore, in the early morning, Irises and Lotus flowers are also blooming beautifully.
not easy to find the car park. the road signages are poor. there are plenty of car park lots. the garden is pretty and there is a good view to the city below. Quite a good place to spend an hour.

An amazing experience. Not a museum in the traditional sense. More of a walkthrough experience reflecting on historical pieces laid out in a beautifully constructed space with the most gorgeous views of the sea. Went in early December, mikan and yuzu trees were in full bloom. Must buy tickets in advance. Would advise going on a sunny day.

It is difficult to categorize this facility with anything. The facility itself is art, the location is art, the ancient Japanese artifacts are art, and the fusion of these elements makes for a special experience. The cherry blossoms and rape blossoms were in full bloom, creating an Amazing landscape. The three hours are in the morning and afternoon, but the three hours go by quickly. Reservations are required through the website.
This place is tucked away in the countryside about 1.5hrs drive from Tokyo. It's best to book in advance for admission and free shuttle bus or parking permit, 3300 yen each person. It's closed at 4:30pm and the access to the bamboo forest is closed at 4pm. Some very exquisite architecture details, as well as spaces (Mies and Philip Johnson glass house vibe), displaying works by the designer/photographer himself. It's quite a little gem esp. if you can manage to visit during a cooler day.
Calm, zen oasis for those wanting a break from Tokyo. Imagine art but in the form of land-based installations and structures. Visited on a Saturday and it wasn’t crowded. Take your time to walk around the grounds, sit on any open benches and just soak in the moment. Wonderful views of the ocean, but like many others mentioned, pray your day of visit is bright and sunny. A leisurely walk around the entire ground would probably take 1.5-2 hrs. There’s a cafe right at the entrance that sells citrus-based drinks (since there’s a citrus grove there).
Directions: definitely reserve your tickets online, together with the shuttle bus that will pick you up from Nebukawa Stn. Don’t get confused by the other shuttle bus which is for the Hilton Resort. Not advisable to walk from the train stn to the observatory since the road is narrow, hilly and it’s quite a distance away. If travelling from Tokyo Stn, can take the Shinkansen to Odawara Stn (33mins) before changing to a local train to Nebukawa Stn - this would be the fastest route but pricey due to the Shinkansen ticket.
Amazing art experience! Only wish i could have stayed longer as the session is only 3 hours and I go slowly. Brings art and architecture together dexigned by hiroshi sugimoto. Elements of japanese garden throughout and one of my favourite art places - reminded me of naoshima and chichu.
There are 3 shuttle bus for each entry from the closest JR station and make sure you book online 2 days in advance to get the discount. I was not so organised and called up on the day for walk up ticket which was 3850 yen but very easy.

Hiryu Falls, also known as Hiryu no Taki, is a hidden gem in Kanagawa Prefecture. It is one of the largest waterfalls in the area and holds cultural significance as a power spot. The falls consist of two tiers, with the upper tier measuring 15m and the lower tier at 25m. Accessing this natural wonder involves hiking along a steep nature trail that stretches from Hatajuku to Ashinoyu.
Wear proper shoes and bring water. I went on this hike because Google Maps said the trail to the falls was only 4 minutes, it’s more like 25-30 minutes. From the West side, it’s all downhill (and thus from the East side, it’s all uphill).

You'd better have nerves of steel for not every movement in the woods is wind. The waterfall itself is ok but the hike is what's worth.
Nice walk between Ashinoyu and Hatajuku. It was around 2km from Ashinoyu to Hiryu Falls and then another 2km onto Hatajuku. It's fairly step, rocky and slippery in places. In this direction it was all downhill. Beautiful waterfall and a very peaceful walk in the forest. We didn't see another soul for the whole walk. Definitely a nice walk that isn't too far.
We took the H bus (Stop2) from Hakone Yumoto Station to stop 143 - Yusakamichi-iriguchi. Then walk down the road a bit to the corner and the path is clearly marked from here.
Such a beatiful place. Wear hiking shoes. Not for anyone with walking difficulties due to the irregularity of the path and water running over it at times. Didnt meet a single person on this trail, more need to go!

公園と言っても、ホタルが自生しているところなので特に設備はなく、砂利道&無照明なので歩きやすい靴と眩しくない照明が必要です。
箱根湯本駅前の赤い橋を使い早川を渡り右に行き湯本富士屋ホテルのエレベーターの前を通り過ぎるとすぐに看板が現れます。
そこから150メートルほどが「公園」と思われます。
19時頃からぽつりぽつりとホタルが出てきて20時半頃まで見ることができます。
ざっと50くらいのホタルを見ることができました。
飛んでいるホタルの近くに手を差し出したら手にとまって優しく光ってくれて癒やされました。

I'm vegetarian, and I'd come from a stay somewhere renowned for their vegetarian cuisine; the food at Fukuzumiro was better, and it wasn't close. A Unique Step Back in Time—But Not Without Its Flaws
Staying at this ryokan truly felt like stepping into 1800s Japan. The traditional atmosphere and architecture were immersive—almost like historical glamping. The tatami rooms, sliding doors, and garden views created a peaceful, nostalgic charm that I genuinely appreciated.
Service was absolutely impeccable. The staff were gracious, attentive, and clearly take pride in maintaining the spirit of omotenashi (Japanese hospitality). Every interaction felt thoughtful and warm.
However, the onsen was a disappointment. While I understand and even value preserving original character, cleanliness should never be sacrificed for authenticity. Moss growing on the walls and an overall lack of hygiene made it difficult to enjoy what should have been a relaxing experience.
There’s a fine line between rustic charm and neglect, and unfortunately, the onsen crossed it. With some attention to cleanliness, this ryokan could be truly exceptional.

We went way above our daily accommodation budget but it was so worth it! The place is incredibly beautiful, quiet and offers an amazing Japanese experience. They have beautiful rooms overlooking the river, the onsen (hot baths, 3 private and 2 shared) are open 24h and are a great way to start/finish the day.
I could write 2 pages about the food! They prepared us a delicious kaiseki dinner and breakfast with lots of different things and every single one was delicious. The food gets served in your room so you have a very private and cozy experience.
6 stars to the lady (sorry, forgot the name) that looked after us serving the food and preparing the room. She was friendly, kind and very patient in explaining all the food and the way to properly enjoy it.

Absolutely amazing and a highlight of our trip to Japan. Traditional style rooms, waking up to a river view, excellent service, they are willing to cater to dietary requirements and made me feel the safest I've felt in Japan with food. The onsens were beautiful, and everyone gets at least 50 + 25 mins in the private onsens, with extra time bookable if available. The attention to detail is fantastic - right down to asking for your height at check in so that you get a yukata of perfect length - a treat for 4'11 me and my 6' partner who can struggle with such things....
Did it blow out accommodation budget? Yes. Is it good value for money? Also yes. Once you've factored in the multi course dinner and breakfast, and onsen, it's really very reasonable.
One thing to note though - it's a traditional style roll up mattress. If you like a very firm mattress you'll like it, but I did struggle a bit. Not the hotel's fault I have a bad back of course! Also worth knowing that if you come by train then it's a 5 minute walk up a hill and steps back to the train station - no fun with big bags. Either leave them in a coin locker and bring an overnight bag, or use Yamato to get your luggage delivered to your next hotel, or come by bus which drops you right outside.
This was such an amazing place to stay! The ryokan is gorgeous, the staff were all very kind and helpful, and the food was delicious. Our room came with a private bath, which was incredible. A wonderful experience!

The park is honestly not that amazing if you count that you pay 500yen to enter (which is super expensive for a park in Japan) the only good place is the shrine in the middle of the water. I went there early in the morning, no people and super quite, such a good walk. 芦ノ湖から逆走して湯本の温泉を目指しました。半分雪道でトレッキングシューズでも滑ります。ほとんど下り坂なので芦ノ湖の標高が高いのがよくわかります。10:30元箱根ローソンスタート、甘酒茶屋で休憩とお弁当タイムを抜かせば3時間半ぐらいで吉池旅館まで行けました。

箱根でハイキングデビューです。
いつもはクルマで通る1号線を、今日は歩いて須雲川バス停を10時に出発⇒芦ノ湖まで13時20分に到着したのは、おしゃべりが出来るぐらいの足並みで甘酒茶屋を休憩地として歩きました。
石畳はコケがあり凸凹してるので登山靴で正解でした。1号線のヘアピンカーブを直線で階段を上がるのでそこは難所。峠を過ぎればなんとか穏やかに歩くことが出来ました。
途中トイレは1ヵ所と甘酒茶屋にあるので困ることはありません。
メジャーな割にハイカーは少なかったです。
芦ノ湖でﾗ･ﾃﾗｯﾂｧ芦ノ湖でpizzaが食べたかったのですが当日はすでにいっぱいで入れませんでした。次回同じコースをハイキングするなら到着時間に合わせて予約をするつもりです。

Just beneath its grounds lies "Soyu," Hakone's oldest hot spring source, revered as Yuya Gongen—the god of hot springs.
We came here as someone said the shrine is dedicated to the God of hotspring which helps kill the illness. Small and peaceful!!
