Authentic Japanese restaurant

Japanese restaurant
Shoushin is a Japanese restaurant in Toronto known for its minimalist interior and hinoki sushi bar offering omakase tasting menus. Chef Jackie Lin crafts authentic Japanese sushi using simple, high-end ingredients to create an outstanding dining experience. The restaurant offers two prix-fixe tasting menus priced at $380 and $520, making it a splurgy spot for sushi enthusiasts. Shoushin specializes in Edomae-style sushi featuring wild-caught fish imported from Japan.
Had a wonderful time and will definitely be coming back soon! I visited with two friends—one of whom is a regular—and she recommended trying the high-end menu for the best dining experience. Everything turned out to be beyond my expectations. Staff: Extremely friendly and attentive, striking the perfect balance between professionalism and warmth. As an introvert, I really appreciated the comforting atmosphere. Food: Unique flavors with an interesting variety. The high-end menu is definitely on the pricier side, compare to the regular ¥520 menu which offers significantly less. I actually loved the slightly larger-than-average Nigiri (lol)—it looked amazing and tasted phenomenal. The only Nigiri I wasn’t a fan of was アカガイ (Akagai), but the uni? Easily one of the best in town. You can tell the chef genuinely cares about quality and freshness. Chef J: Very outgoing, with what I’d guess has a ESTP-type personality. Definitely a skilled chef, also an excellent businessman—he knows how to build his personal brand and run a successful restaurant. This was my second time visiting. I first came when they had just opened, and while I enjoyed the food, the restaurant itself didn’t yet have a distinct personality. At the time, there were so many omakase options available that I didn’t feel compelled to return right away. However, coming back this time, I really liked the place. It has grown into something special. Thanks to my friend’ recommendations. I’d highly recommend this restaurant—especially for those looking to experience the high-end menu!

Shoushin was one of the best Omakase experiences I've had outside of Japan hands down. Excellent service that can rival any fine dining establishment. The sake list was extensive and well thought. The food was perfectly timed and seasoned to perfection. Each piece of nigiri showcased the chef's personality. The perfect rice to accompany the perfectly prepared fish. If you're looking for an intricately prepared sushi roll this may not be your kind of restaurant. If you're looking for more traditional and simple flavors that showcase the fish and seasonality, this is the restaurant for you.
Danny N — Google review
Absolutely mind blowing experience that we had at Shoushin. Thanks chef Jackie and his team taking care of us for the night. Top notch ingredient and amazing presentation on every dishes. Staffs are professional and polite. Highly recommend to try it out.
Alan N — Google review
The best and the most authentic sushi I ever had in Toronto. A bit pricey, but this level of authentic edomae sushi is hard to come by. Definitely worth it if you are looking for the real experience.
Nathan K — Google review
The omakase here was just ok. It's definitely not worth the price. The service, on the other hand, was amazing. They were very attentive. We got the Sakura omakase, which was 350 per person and a bottle of sake, and the bill came out to be around 500 pp after tax and tip. The best piece we probably the uni and the kama otoro. I think the rice lacked a bit of seasoning, and fish quality was just ok. They made their ginger different (vinegar bit strong), and wasabi had a really light color, so I'm not sure how pure it was, not the green that I've seen. I've been to other omakases in the city that I felt was much better for less, so that's what I'm comparing it to. Overall, it was very underwhelming for a michelin Star restaurant. I'm giving it a 3 star based on the value you get for the price you're paying.
Linh N — Google review
I have been lucky enough to have experienced a lot of omakase meals and Michelin locations. This restaurant has blown all of my other experiences out of the water. You can tell Chef Lin loves what he is doing and loves the experience he gives his guests. The staff is ON TOP of everything. Tiny things, like I started eating my sushi left handed, (I am right handed), and so they reset my wet towel placement, something I never would have noticed or thought about. The fish was tasty, and someone at our table loved the soy sauce so much, he drank it 🫣 Will go back when I visit Toronto again!

An unbelievable experience. My wife and I visited Shoushin for our wedding anniversary and we were not disappointed. On the day we went, the restaurant had just recently received a Michelin Star and rightfully so... The quality of fish, the presentation, the flavors, the service and the overall atmosphere were second to none. We tasted things that we have never tasted before and Shoushin just blew ours minds! There were things that my wife and I normally don't eat at any other Japanese restaurants (I usually don't like squid and she does not like Uni)... but here... the taste and quality had us enjoying absolutely everything (even the slice of melon at the end of the meal was like nothing we ever tasted before)! All of the staff were extremely friendly, courteous and knowledgeable in each of their roles and I must say that this restaurant offered some of the best service we have ever received at any restaurant. We will definitely be back to enjoy another incredible meal with all the wonderful people at Shoushin!
Andy — Google review
Food is amazing, season omakase that is authentic. Get the private room with Jackie for the best experience. 10/10 would 100% do it again and again and again. The wasabi and fish is better than anywhere else in Toronto. Jackie travels to personally inspect and acquire rare ingredients that bring out flavors we have never tasted before. It was an immaculate experience. Great presentation and amazing service. Friendly and worth it.

Miku Toronto is a Japanese fine-dining restaurant located in Bay Street's Waterpark Place. The restaurant specializes in Aburi, or flame-seared, Japanese cuisine, offering a variety of dishes from sushi to share plates. One of the highlights is the Aburi Prime Experience, a four-course tasting menu featuring nine nigiri prepared using various techniques such as flame searing, sous vide, fish aging, and marinating.
We were there for the first time today. Due to traffic we were a few minutes late. We were seated relatively quickly. The host was kind a polite. From the moment our server came over to introduce herself and the menu we felt immediately welcomed. She provided wonderful suggestions. Our server was knowledgeable, accommodating, and just an absolute joy to have around. As our food came out plate by plate we were even more impressed with the flavours. We enjoyed the atmosphere and flexibility of the servers. We skipped dessert because we were full from everything we ordered. The dining experience was amazing. We will definitely be back!

came with my boyfriend for my birthday a couple weeks ago, and it was a great experience. we were 15 minutes late but they were very understanding and accommodated us right away. the food was great. the sablefish was so buttery, the otoro was so fresh and the wagyu carpaccio was very flavourful, and the matcha opera cake was one of the best desserts i've had in a while. can't go wrong with any of the items. our server took the time to explain certain menu items and always made sure to check in with us without it feeling too overbearing. one minor setback would be our drinks, we ordered the jasmine punch with an extra shot and the pandan daiquiri, but the pandan daiquiri actually came with the extra shot and so our server came back with another jasmine punch that had the extra shot, but the overall drink with the extra shot tasted different from the original one, and so when the receipt came, we saw that we got charged for a jasmine punch, pandan daiquiri and a dillans gin cocktail or something. other than that, the atmosphere, food and service were great! highly recommend coming here for the sushi.

I had the Late Summer Kaiseki Tasting Menu at Miku, and it was perfect from start to finish. Each dish was beautifully presented, thoughtfully crafted, and full of incredible flavour. The wine and sake pairing was spot-on, enhancing every course and making the experience feel even more special. Service was warm and attentive, and the whole evening felt seamless and celebratory. Miku exceeded my expectations—I’d highly recommend this tasting menu to anyone looking for a truly elevated dining experience in Toronto.

miku gives fine dining energy without being stuffy. the space is modern and polished and you immediately know you’re in for something special. the aburi sushi is the standout. the seared salmon and ebi are rich buttery and melt instantly. every piece is plated beautifully and feels like it was designed for both flavor and aesthetics. the rolls go beyond the usual with unique combinations that are fresh and balanced. service is smooth and professional. staff are attentive without hovering and the pacing of dishes feels effortless. it is on the expensive side but the quality and presentation make it worth it. miku is the type of spot you choose for a date night celebration or when you want to feel like you’re living a little extra. overall food 10 vibe 10 price high but justified

I celebrated my birthday lunch with friends at Miku Toronto and loved every bite. The dishes were beautifully presented and bursting with flavor—especially the aburi sushi, which was melt-in-your-mouth perfection. The vibe is polished yet relaxed, making it great for a special occasion. Staff were warm and attentive, keeping things seamless without rushing us and adding a nice celebratory touch. Between the fresh seafood, thoughtful plating, and smooth service, it was an unforgettable meal. Highly recommend for anyone looking to make a lunch feel like a celebration.
Jianshu C — Google review
Loved Miku! We came here for dinner with my girlies and were treated so well. I would recommend to book reservations so you are seated right away. We were greeted the moment we walked in and was escorted to our table right away. The food was super delicious and tasted so fresh. The aesthetic of the restaurant was so pretty inside. Would definitely come back again to try their other dishes.
Diana — Google review
This was my second visit and the food has been average with a couple hits and misses. Unfortunately, the dessert COMPLETELY missed the mark. It tasted like a poor-quality lactose-free ice cream. highly disappointing. The sablefish, however, was excellent and definitely my favourite.
Jennifer L — Google review
Dined in for the late autumn kaiseki. Although the menu was an overall disappointment for our anniversary celebration, I will commend the service. Our server was attentive and professional; even offering to move us mid-meal away from a louder party. Cocktails to start were a letdown. The matcha punch tasted like the last sip of an iced matcha latte watered down by its ice. The hamaki was a disappointment; boasting homemade hojicha liqueur, it was unbalanced and the citrus was too high. Next round was safer with an Asahi and highball. The amuse was a great start with a great punch. Texture was great and got me excited for the meal ahead. The sashimi was regretfully dressed with overpowering accompaniments. There was no justice done to the fish, just butchered with overexerting toppings. The appetizer trio was a rollercoaster on loose tracks. The lobster in squash soup was fine and set a fair incline. The scallop was the apex of the trio — beautifully cooked, plump, and paired with complementary additions. The tomato medley and burrata is where the nuts, bolts, and tracks came loose — uninspired, misplaced. The sea dish was great. The salmon was cooked beautifully but the tomato sauce was confusing. Mark was missed by not pairing this with an udon or ramen noodle. This dish required a carb and rice was ordered halfway through to compensate. The sushi felt like a coin toss with some bites outshining the others. The uni sushi was beautiful and its specific highlight was the roasted nori. Overall, the sushi falls into the same trap as the sashimi — beautiful fish being treated as otherwise and putting toppings that should have been 1/4 of the amount, if at all. The quality of the fish should speak for itself, though I do applaud the variety of flavours of the toppings achieved. The land course was fine. The wagyu was great, the jus was beautiful (though I wish they were apart). The onion puree was unnecessary. Surprisingly, the mushroom was the highlight of this dish. The dessert was phenomenal. Think a creamsicle cheesecake — playful, refreshing, and a pick-me-up after two hours of a palate let down plate after plate. For a fall menu, I wish I saw some chestnuts and persimmons, maybe even an warm soup or shinmai (or any rice/noodle in general, aside from the sushi). TLDR: Late autumn fixed menu was disappointing, disjointed, and a whirlwind. Top bites: Salmon (order rice with it), maitake, uni and roasted nori. Come for great service, leave with an appetite for Church’s Chicken across the street.

Yamato Japanese Restaurant is a delightful culinary gem that has been captivating diners since the 1980s. Renowned for its authentic Japanese cuisine, this establishment features an entertaining teppanyaki grill where skilled chefs prepare meals right before your eyes, creating a vibrant dining experience. For sushi enthusiasts, Yamato also boasts a dedicated sushi bar offering fresh and delectable options. The restaurant's inviting atmosphere makes it perfect for both casual lunches and special occasions.
A 5 star review for ecxellent service. The manager and staff took great care of our group, and we appreciated that a lot. The chef's performance at the grill table was very entertaining, so definitely a good place for a group dinner with some fun experience. The place was not the best place for authentic Japanese foods I must say, the tastes were modified to accommodate western people, as >90% of the guests in and out while we were there were western 😁. Might be because I am not a big fan of grill foods, I found the tepanyaki meals were just above 3.5, while shushi could be 4 (nothing special on the shushi dinner), shasimi 5 (super good!). The desserts we had, Japanese cheesecake, caramel, ice cream, were all excellent!

The prices are amazing considering this is Yorkville. The food was great but hey, we’re here for the experience. I was out solo - and it was still so much fun and delicious! The pickled appetizer went well with the Oysters! I love for Oysters 🤘🏾💙 Near parking and transit, VERY walkable area…espresso or gelato after…
Paul N — Google review
The teppanyaki sirloin steak was good—tender, and juicy. The live cooking show was entertaining, with the chef’s skills adding a fun element to the meal. Service was friendly and attentive. Areas for Improvement: - The lobster was overcooked and overly salty, making it less enjoyable than expected. - The vegetables also leaned too salty. If you prefer lighter seasoning, consider requesting less salt when ordering. - The Dragon Roll was a bit overly sweet, and the eel portion was surprisingly small, which was a letdown. Two people $170 including tax. I would want higher quality food. Need a few tweaks in seasoning and cooking precision.
Yetukalulu — Google review
If you’re in Yorkville and want a slightly old-school Japanese teppanyaki experience, I highly recommend this place. The food isn’t especially remarkable, but given today’s prices, it’s very fair for the service, and watching the teppanyaki show is fun. The staff are friendly, and the chef at the teppanyaki grill is both kind and entertaining. It’s a great experience—especially if you have kids, they’ll absolutely love it.
Daniel — Google review
This teppanyaki restaurant has a elegant Japanese interior style, and the staffs were all warm and friendly. Our chef was super entertaining- he did knife tricks, wrote “I ❤️ U” with egg white, and even teased us by pretending to serve the rice but pulling it away at the last second like a Turkish ice cream vendor!! He also made an onion ring volcano 🌋. It was definitely a memorable experience. That said, the food itself was just average. The fried rice was a bit too oily (the chef put too much butter), the tempura batter was too thick, and while our steak was fresh, the portions were really small. Considering the high price, we felt it wasn’t good value. Overall tho it was a fun and enjoyable experience, perfect for a family or friends gathering.
Shirly — Google review
Food was average in terms of both quality of ingredients and taste. Teriyaki ribeye and fillet mignon were both okay. Scallop and shrimp are also very average. All meat were cooked with heavy sauce, soy sauce and some butter/cream so basically tasted that sauce instead of food. Fried rice was okay also. Overall it’s more like watching the show rather than having really good food. Service was okay. Price of beer tends to higher than most of restaurants in town. Cheese cake was good.
Mia — Google review
This place is such a fun experience! I took my ten year old when we were visiting Toronto and we had a blast. The chef was very talented and entertaining with his tricks. The food was great. We had the sushi and the teppanyaki and both were delicious. I took my son to many fun attractions while in Toronto but lunch at Yamato was the highlight of his trip!
Sarah B — Google review
A Must-Visit Hibachi Experience at Yamato Resort We recently dined at Yamato, located within the Yorkville, and it was an unforgettable experience. The highlight was definitely the hibachi-style dining, where the chefs cook right in front of you with impressive flair—flipping utensils, creating onion volcanoes, and putting on a show that's both fun and skillful. It added so much energy and entertainment to the evening. The ambience is lively and welcoming, perfect for group outings or celebrations. It's always packed on weekends, so reservations are a must, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. That said, the place does get a bit warm inside—the air conditioning could use some improvement. Also, when it’s crowded, the acoustics make it a bit noisy since the sound tends to bounce off the walls. But all of that fades away when the food arrives. The fried rice was outstanding, and every dish we tried was flavorful and satisfying. The overall energy, food quality, and experience make it well worth a visit. Highly recommended if you're looking for dinner with a show!

Kingyo Fisherman's Market is an informal and contemporary Japanese izakaya located in Toronto. It was started by a former Guu and Kingyo cook as a pop-up but now has a permanent home in a former Portuguese sports bar. The menu features small plates created by chef Koji Zenimaru, including standout dishes like sticky wings, corn fritters, beef tataki, and grilled squid tentacle.
5/5. Loved every dish we tried, fish was fresh, everything was tasty although it is on the pricier end. The ambiance was better than expected. Seating was comfortable and spacious, and really liked the “convenience store” they have inside the store. While waiting for food we were able to browse to pass the time and check out the goods. Overall worth a stop if you’re nearby! Will be back.
Cindy H — Google review
Kingyo is my family’s go-to place for a casual special meal with Grandma and my kids. It’s so good and there’s so much variety. We’ve had many birthdays and Mother’s Days here. There is a nice variety of authentic Japanese food, and the decor is fun with pachinko machines in the brick wall. Service is good as well. This visit, we had a kids’ platter, ramen, grilled fish, sizzling agedashi tofu with enoki mushrooms, Salmon Lover, Unagi ikura bara chirashi. After eating, we enjoy browsing the market with curated Japanese treats and Japanese Canadian drinks and food. It can get really busy, so reservations are recommended.

Kingyo Fisherman’s Market is a vibrant and popular Japanese restaurant in Toronto, particularly known for its fresh seafood and izakaya-style dishes. It's a great spot for those who love high-quality, flavorful Japanese food with a bit of a modern twist. The ambiance and food quality here have earned it a solid reputation. The food here is really where Kingyo shines. The menu is packed with an exciting range of Japanese dishes, with a heavy focus on seafood, but also a variety of options for non-seafood lovers. If you love fresh, high-quality Japanese seafood and a lively, vibrant dining experience, Kingyo Fisherman’s Market is an excellent choice. It’s perfect for a night out with friends or a date if you’re looking for something a little more dynamic and fun. The food is consistently praised for its freshness and creativity, while the ambiance keeps things exciting!

Kingyo Izakaya in Toronto is a place that always buzzes with energy, and for good reason—it’s lovely and consistently very busy, creating a great atmosphere. I particularly enjoyed the unique touch of having a small store inside that sells a variety of Japanese goods, letting you pick up some favorites while you're there. The staff were really nice and contributed to a pleasant dining experience. My feelings about the food, however, are a little mixed. One dish was absolutely spectacular: the torched salmon sushi. It was truly out of this world—a must-try that I would recommend without a moment's doubt. On the flip side, the don karaage did not meet the mark. I found it to be sub-par. The chicken itself was bland, and I was definitely not a fan of the accompanying radish puree. It was a disappointing bite, especially compared to the amazing sushi. Overall, while there's a definite hit-or-miss aspect to the menu based on my experience, the fantastic ambiance and the sheer brilliance of that torched salmon make it worth a visit. Just maybe steer clear of the don karaage!

This is a great spot for delicious japanese food! They dont have a lot of sushi roll options but they have soooooo much more. Fortunately, they have a couple of platter options that allowed us to try a bunch of different things. The lotus root, salmon sashimi, crab udon…. I dont know where to begin listing all the delicious items. Cant wait to come back here. Oh and service is amazing.

Food was delicious, but be prepared to wait awhile as they prepare your food. Don't expect to be in and out in 30 mins for dinner here. Portion size were great, and the kids meal they offer are simply amazing. The ramen was also very tasty, as well as the rest of the food we tried.

Pretty good sushi spot, Ill be back. If you order the meal, you'll basically get an experience of a bunch of small dishes. Their fish was fresh and had better value than a lot of the japanese restaurants downtown. Place also gets packed so probably best to get reservations

Praise and only praises. Great service. Great food. Great vibes. Is it expensive? Yeah! But it’s worth it. I felt like I had time travelled back to Japan. With og ads playing in the background. The mackerel sushi…immaculate. Even the drinks were good. Expensive but worth every penny in freshness and taste and service and vibes

Japanese restaurant
Kaiseki Yu-zen Hashimoto is an exclusive, high-end restaurant in Toronto that offers a traditional Japanese kaiseki dining experience. It stands out as one of the first establishments to introduce this culinary art form to the city and possibly even Canada. Nestled within the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, it provides an authentic kaiseki experience without having to travel to Japan. The restaurant's intimate setting features only three tables and includes a tea ceremony as part of the multi-course meal.
What a wonderful once-in-a-lifetime cultural culinary immersion experience at Kaiseki Yu-zen Hashimoto! From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed in a warm and compassionate manner in a peaceful, impeccably decorated space. Step into this authentic dining experience where heart and passion meets top notch culinary talent. Kei took great time and care to educate us on chef Masaki Hashimoto’s works of art. We are so in awe of this special experience and are so grateful for this wonderful space and experience you’ve created. Thank you!

The environment is excellent—although the space is tiny with only three tables, it’s one of the rare spots in Toronto offering private dining for small groups (2–4 people). The decor is refined and thoughtfully arranged—small but complete in every detail. The service is absolutely top-notch. From the initial reservation to the actual dining experience, every detail was handled with care and professionalism. As for the food, it’s undoubtedly a visual feast, beautifully presented with high-quality ingredients. The flavors are on the lighter side—perhaps true to the essence of kaiseki cuisine. While it may not be particularly bold or striking in taste, that subtlety might be exactly what it’s meant to be. Overall, it was a very pleasant dining experience. Thank you to the team for putting so much heart into it!

The restaurants in Japan pale in comparison to this place. The dishes are methodical and handled with precision and care. The waiter is a guide that urges you to pay attention to the food, respecting its origin and enjoying time with the people you love. It’s a one of a kind experience, enhancing your senses, your palette and your appreciation of art and life itself.

Fresh ingredient, beautiful and tasteful dishes. The staffs are very nice. The food are small portion but good enough to make you full. Very happy to enjoy the kaiseki in a quiet environment.

A beautiful and exquisite dining experience. We learned a lot about Kaiseki and different sakes. Our sommelier Kei was wonderful. The dishes are presented delicately and there are many subtle flavours. We also did a sake pairing. Definitely get the tea too. Favourites included the grilled fish, wagyu beef, and the many vegetables. All the broths had a subtle flavour and complemented the dish. The atmosphere felt as if we had been transported to Japan. Lastly the desert was very unique compared to other Michelin establishments. It’s light and sweet the melon is a perfect way to end the meal.

Extraordinary service with authentic Japanese style decoration and furniture. Immersive experience with Japanese culture. The food is very delicious. Thoughtful and creative ideas on the tastes and presentation of each dish. Overall recommending this special experience if you want to try Kaiseki cuisine and enjoy the Japanese culture.

Came here on our anniversary and I must say, it is one of the most pleasant, peaceful and relaxing experiences that I ever had at a restaurant. The atmosphere gives a zen and calming vibe. We were seated in a cozy room with tatami flooring with beautiful traditional Japanese decor. In terms of food, great balance of strong and light flavours all around. The portion size is hara hachi bu (腹八分目), a term that means you’ll be 80% full and feel satisfied without over eating and being mindful of your portion. It was perfect amount. The food and menu was carefully curated with a lot of attention to detail. The artistic visuals of the dishes awed me. The taste reminds me of home but there’s just something special and extra in them that makes each dish unique. The service was 10/10, the waiter and waitress were very polite, kind and friendly to us. They described the dishes very well and explained what is in the dish. They also advised us what to eat first and where to start which is something I appreciate. They sent me an email right after the dinner that included high quality pictures of us at the restaurant. It also had the actual food we’ve eaten with a thank you note which was a plus. Overall, I’ve been to a Kaiseki in Kyoto before called “Kikunoi Honten” and it’s very comparable. You can get a similar experience here without having to fly all the way to Japan. I’m glad there’s a restaurant here in Toronto like this. Highly highly recommend if you want a Kaiseki experience.

Amazing first-time kaiseki experience at Chef Hashimoto. The atmosphere is very calm and relaxing. The service is attentive yet not intruding. And the food was delicate, rich in flavour, but not too heavy at all. Favorite dishes include the grilled sanma, the sea bream collar, and the A5 wagyu ribeye. Chef Hashimoto also personally wrote a birthday card for my wife. This act really made our evening truly special. Thanks again for the great dining experience!

Imanishi Japanese Kitchen is a cozy spot that offers homestyle Japanese dishes in a relaxed atmosphere. Executive chef Michael Angeloni highly recommends this restaurant, praising its diverse menu and delicious offerings. The restaurant provides takeout and local delivery through Uber Eats, making it convenient to enjoy their savory gyudon and flavorful ramen from the comfort of your home.
This spot was so cute when I came here for my birthday with my friends! We ordered a little bit of everything off the menu and every single dish just hit. The dessert was probably my favourite part, and would definitely come back again. The service was so friendly and accommodating to our group. She made sure we were good the whole time. Would recommend doing reservations as they seem to get busy especially around dinner time.
Diana — Google review
We were so excited to try this spot. Kept seeing good things about them on instagram and reddit. The food was underwhelming, see below. Hamachi sashimi: I think the portions were crazy, they said 7 pieces but 3/7 were half the size of regular sashimi. For 23$ this was a joke.. Cilantro prawn salad: I enjoyed the flavors of this one, but the stems are so long it really pokes your throat and makes it uncomfortable to eat. Potato and Anchovy Salad: Needed more crisps, the flavor was good. Corn Karaage: People kept posting this one but it’s really just corn + tempura? There was no special seasoning. Didn’t stand out to me. Curry Spring Rolls: I think the flavours here were good but it’s not hard to make with prexisting curry blocks/seasoning. Karashi Ribs: The best thing we had. Good balance of savory/sweet/spicy. The ribs had fall off the bone texture. Tokyo Toast: The taro ice cream had no taro flavour, my friend thought that the ice cream was vanilla.. The bread is just fried. Overall I think this place does texture well but the main star - flavour, is seriously lacking. Also the service was bad, our server ignored us and when they brought us the bill the tip options were 20 and 22% umm..

Wow, just wow! Every dish we tried was a flavour explosion. The small plates are genius—you get to share and taste so much more of the menu. We are already planning our next trip back to try the rest! And the TOAST... I'm still dreaming about it. Do not miss it.

a great cozy spot. Every dish was super solid, and I rly like all the highballs. Yummy sashimi. Wish they had rolls. I love the atmosphere. One wish is that there were a little more fresh options and less fried.

Tapas style Japanese. The corn tempura, beef ribs, pork, sashimi, curry are all winners. Very strong dishes all around with small sharing portions. Exceptional atmosphere really took me back to a cozy Osaka establishment, full of 90s Japanese vinyl and trinkets. Recommended.

The best restaurant in town for me right now! The food is absolutely incredible, and the staff are so warm and friendly—never pushy. Last time we went, Jenny was our waitress and she was amazing: cheerful, attentive to all our needs, and even noticed I was pregnant, so she kindly offered me a more comfortable chair. Also - My friend was allergic to dairy and they were really careful to suggest foods and promptly offered alternatives. 5 stars for me!!!

It was my first time trying Japanese food other than sushi, and I’ve gotta say—OMG, this place has the best food! I wish I could remember everything I ordered, but I just went with all their recommendations. One dish that really stood out was the cold noodles, but the sashimi and chicken wings were outstanding as well. Of course, my favorite part of the meal was dessert: the Tokyo Toast with taro ice cream. Uufff, absolutely delightful. I would definitely come back!
Claudia E — Google review
Amazing food, quick service, and a pleasant and lively atmosphere. So many amazing dishes that it's hard to fit them all in in one sitting, and we've tried... Will definitely be back to try the rest of the menu. Don't you dare leaving without having the Tokyo Toast dessert; it looks simple, but it's insanely delicious. On the menu: • Corn Kakiage: Sweet corn tempura • Ebi Fry: Deep fried jumbo prawn and tartar sauce, 3 pieces • Chicken nanban: Deep-fried and battered chicken, amazu vinegar, eggy tartar • Prawn and cilantro salad: Cilantro, prawns, almonds, cucumber, crispy shallots, nori, fish sauce dressing • Saba miso-ni: Miso braised mackerel, koji • Anchovy potato salad & chips: Served with seaweed salt taro chips • Beef tataki: Seared ribeye, fried chickpeas, red onion, sansho pepper, almond oil • Gailan Gomaae: Boiled Chinese broccoli, yuzu peel, sesame dressing, katsuo-bushi • Tofu & mizuna salad: Silken tofu, avocado, mizuna, shio-konbu dressing • Pickles: Cucumber, rice vinegar, kombu, chili pepper Dessert: • Tokyo toast: Deep fried thick cut sugar toasted Japanese milk bread, topped with ice cream and toasted soba Drinks: • Sesarac: Sesame infused lot 40, dry vermouth, maraschino liqueur, pernod • Yuzu lemonade Instagram: @imanishijapanesekitchen

Kasa Moto is a modern Japanese restaurant and lounge located near the Hazelton Hotel in Toronto's upscale Yorkville neighborhood. It is part of the Chase Hospitality Group, known for creating stylish dining spaces. The restaurant features a vibrant setting with a rooftop patio and an ornate bar, offering sophisticated Japanese cuisine. With its sprawling two-story layout and seating for 410 guests, Kasa Moto boasts artistic works that pay homage to Japan, including cherry blossoms and geisha portraits.
From the moment we arrived at Kasa Moto, the professionalism of the team stood out. Our table wasn’t quite ready, but we were warmly seated at the bar to wait, which set a really nice tone for the evening. The ambiance is beautiful, stylish and vibrant with music that perfectly matches the atmosphere. The food was fresh and flavorful. Garlic shrimp noodles is outstanding. A special shoutout to Bianca, who took excellent care of us. Her recommendations were spot-on, and her energy and positive vibes made the whole experience even better. Overall, a fantastic dining spot in Yorkville. Highly recommended!

The food here was okay, but nothing particularly special. For example, the bun came out cold- maybe it’s supposed to be served that way, but I was expecting it warm, so it didn’t really suit my taste. The chicken also took a long time to come out. There are many better restaurants in Yorkville, so I’m satisfied with having visited this one just once.

This is a great rooftop spot! I would recommend their brunch having tried all of the all you can eat bites available at the time we were there. All you can enjoy brunch! The small plates were excellent and filling it would be hard to eat everything in one setting so we shared each of the dishes. The chicken karaage and waffles were definitely a favorite along with the beef picanha and tempora shrimp. Honestly it was all delicious. Our least favorite were the Sandy's but they weren't bad. Our server was attentive and wasn't shy to make suggestions to get us started.
Brandon B — Google review
kasa moto’s bottomless brunch may seem very pricey, but every. single. dish. was. VERY yummy. like i honestly would’ve ordered five of everything if i could. usually there are some hit or misses on an ayce menu, but that wasn’t the case today. i think the quality was so worth it for the price. aLSo, there is a nonalcoholic option that is $75, SO COME HERE ! even though everything was outstanding, my favourite was the chicken karaage and waffles. the chicken was SO hot and juicy and the seasoning was fantastic, and it paired PERFECTLY with the sweet, eggy, crispy, soft waffle. dip it all into that sweet sticky honey sauce and you have the ultimate brunch dish. i seriously had like four of these. another dish that was really good and i wasn’t expecting to be so blown away by was the broccoli tempura. both tempura dishes were fried to perfection with the perfect crunch, and i loved how the broccoli was kind of like chewy and thick and had a really interesting texture. it was so warm inside and dipping it in the soy sauce enhanced it too. other dishes, in general ranking of enjoyment: chocolate chip pancakes: very thick and fluffy, sweetness from cream and fresh fruits, salty caramel, and sour-ish yuzu oyster mushroom bao: great quality bun, perfect stickiness and pillowyness, crunchy fresh cucumber with a nice sauce picahna: amazing quality steak with good fattiness and not too chewy, lots of salt??? drenched in sweet tomato sauce-like dressing shrimp tempura: again, fried really crispy and crunchy, juicy hot shrimp, lemon flavour in sauce tamago sando: soft and thick bread with nice egg salad filling, light mayo wagyu fried rice: reminded me of my grandmas famous fried rice!! oiliness gave a pleasant fragrant aroma, and it was cooked in a way that ensured the rice grains were 很粒 (separate? not mushy?) mochi ice cream & marscapone : desserts were amazing, but i think i was too full to fully enjoy them — nevertheless, the mochi was perfectly stretchy yet easy to chew, the ice cream flavours included matcha, strawberry, and a yellow one that i didn’t try but i’m assuming was lemon…? the marscapone cream tart had a wonderfully sugary wafer with light creamy filling inside pork katsu sando: really fantastic, soft bread with nice toast, crispy breading on the meat, lean but not too dry, the slaw had a tangy sourness or fruitiness that i can’t describe maki: all very delicious selections that were nice and saucy, i loved the aburi one especially udon: super creamy, with faint hints of truffle taste (but maybe it’s just the mushroom) chili chicken salad: loved the chili flavour with bits of crispy inside
Katelynn C — Google review
I visited Kasa Moto for the first time for a dinner invitation. Finding the entrance was a bit tricky since the road shown on Google Maps wasn’t actually accessible. The restaurant was quite busy even on a weekday evening. We had a table for six, but the side-by-side seating wasn’t ideal for conversation. The food was overall good, and we enjoyed sharing a variety of dishes — especially the karaage chicken and wagyu fried rice, which were delicious. One issue was with the wine: the second bottle we ordered looked different, and there was no explanation at first. Later, we learned that our original wine was sold out, and they had brought a different vintage. We ended up ordering another bottle instead.

Their main door is closed for some reason. You have to find their rooftop patio door on the side but that is not disclosed when you reserve and when you call them it goes straight to a IVR menu and no one picks up. The food is below average. Everything was very. The sushi was falling apart and the grill smelled super fishy. Their service is very friendly but super slow. I waited probably 9 minutes for salt. The Espresso Martini was good.
Naghmeh S — Google review
Food was good, Jamal was very friendly and attentive. They brought out a birthday dessert for my girlfriend which was nice. For food I would recommend the tun tartare and the spicy salmon.

If you want high quality sushi and sashimi presented with an exquisite aesthetic, then you've come to the right place. Located in the Yorkville core, KasaMoto will revitalize your senses with simple delights and top notch service. Great for business casual, birthday parties and get togethers and, of course, date night, the reason I went (and the date went very well btw) ☺️

Nami Japanese Restaurant is a long-standing upscale dining spot in Toronto, offering an authentic Japanese experience. The restaurant features traditional cuisine served in a contemporary setting, with the option to dine in rooms adorned with paper screen doors and Tatami mats. Known for its sushi bar, Robata grill, and tabletop hot pots, Nami also offers unique dishes like the famous Sushi Pizza.
Without a doubt one of the best japanese restaurants I've ever been to! Their menu is focused around sushi and sashimi but there are a lot of cooked dishes as well. Extremely fresh and high quality ingredients are thoughtfully executed here, and its no wonder why this is one of Toronto's oldest sushi joints. The ingredients are so fresh that I, pleasantly, didn't even recognize the flavors of some fish I often order. The black cod may be the single best cooked fish I've ever tasted and highly recommend! Service is excellent, and the decor is beautiful. Traditional feeling, yet intimate and cozy! The menu is on the pricier side but it's absolutely worth it, considering quality and execution is better than most other places I've had in the same price range. Highly, highly recommend!

I recently visited Nami, and I have to say the sushi was absolutely amazing—authentically prepared and full of fresh, rich flavours. The attention to detail in each dish was spot on, and every bite felt like a true taste of Japan. The atmosphere was also lovely, with a peaceful, traditional setting. However, I was a bit taken aback by the portion sizes considering the high prices. While the quality of the food definitely made up for a lot, I found myself wishing there was a bit more on the plate for what I was paying. For those looking for a hearty meal, the portions might leave you wanting. Overall, I'd definitely recommend it for the incredible sushi, but be prepared for the price and portions not to quite match up.

Decided to try summerlicious at this restaurant for the first time and didn’t have a great experience. First off their AC was broken so it was unbearably hot inside (they did notify us beforehand the day before but we weren’t sure we could find another restaurant in time so still agreed to go). For my courses I ordered the oysters for appetizer, bluefin tuna rice bowl for main, and soy milk Panna cotta for dessert. The oysters did not taste fresh at all and I couldn’t really taste any oyster flavour at all because they were drenched in soy sauce. The soy sauce was overpowering. The main was ok but for the price I paid, I would’ve expected much better quality fish. They gave several different cuts of the bluefin tuna ranging in their fat content. If you’ve had bluefin tuna before you know that fatty tuna parts are meant to melt in your mouth but the pieces they served were chewy and hard to bite through. Likely because the AC was broken, the fish also didn’t taste very fresh. The soy milk panna cotta was probably the best thing I was served that night. The restaurant atmosphere was quite empty and although the servers were very nice, the service was quite slow. I would not come back to this restaurant or recommend it. There are loads more sushi spots in DT that can offer much higher quality and fresh tastes for similar prices.
Jeslyn C — Google review
Overall, the experience was good. I went for Summerlicious and they had a lot of options on their menu. The hamachi carpaccio was disappointing however the main (blue fin Chirashi) was quite good. Dessert was good too (cheesecake) but I just expected more for the price. Also the cocktails were too expensive for the size.

Outstanding experience. Went back for the Tasting Menu twice in a week! Authentic, fresh, delicious, well presented dishes. Much of the fish was flown in from Japan. The black cod was so flavorful, fresh and tender. Tomo’s unique yuzu ice cream is not to be missed! The staff are all gracious, welcoming, and friendly. They are also very conscientious about any food allergies. Highly recommended!

Food is fresh and delicious, everything is presented nicely and the rice used for sushi has an unique flavour! Would recommend to anyone who likes Japanese food.

A top-notch spot for sushi and sashimi lovers—fresh fish, chill vibes, and a lunch menu worth lingering over. It’s on the pricier side though. One dish you can’t miss: the seafood mixture bento—especially if you’re ready to splurge a little.

A very nice Japanese sushi/sashimi-focused restaurant. ("Nami" means "wave" in Japanese, in case you’re wondering.) The food is excellent and very authentic. The restaurant is definitely on the expensive side, and it is à la carte only (no prix fixe or true omakase), but it’s worth it for special occasions. The interior décor could use a bit of a facelift, but I still recommend this place if you’re looking to experience real Japanese cuisine.

Fune is a delightful dining destination that has been charming guests since the 1990s with its unique approach to Japanese cuisine. This casual eatery features an extensive menu filled with traditional favorites and innovative dishes, all beautifully presented on floating boats at the sushi bar. The atmosphere is lively, as patrons eagerly await their orders gliding along a conveyor belt, making it a fun experience for everyone—especially those who might struggle with chopsticks!
Came here for my birthday, was not disappointed! We particularly love the scallops and their salmon here, melts in your mouth, feels really fresh and taste quite a bit nicer than your average sushi place. And of course with great quality and service comes a greater price tag, more on the pricier side, but not outrageously expensive. We sat on the floating sushi boat bar, and the quality of the sushi is still very good, despite not being made right out from the kitchen, still tasted fresh. Also tried the Udon and wasn’t disappointed, the broth especially smells really nice. Would definitely come back on special occasions!
Heyyoumen1 — Google review
Fun experience with decent sushi but lacking in that wow factor for the price. You are paying a premium for the experience of having one of, if not, the only conveyor belt boat sushi restaurant experiences in Toronto. Service was satisfactory and attentive but expected for the price. Sushi variety was average with some exotic options and a range of drink and sake selections at all price points. Each plate is between $4.50 to $8.50 for two pieces, on average. Higher priced items like uni are also available. The uni was tasty enough but not from Japanese waters. I would return annually for the floating boat (Fune) experience, not for the price or quality of fish.
Bryan C — Google review
The service and quality of the food we received was great. It was a little on the pricier side but worth it. The experience was great especially seeing their rotating sushi boat system. I would highly recommend this place if you want fast service and quality food.
Janice J — Google review
Quite an expensive place. But it’s a fun experience to sit around a turning table full of boats on water carrying sushi. They also have a menu where you can order more expensive items like the fatty tuna. The fatty tuna sushi is quite nice, but the sashimi is not that fat. Meaning it’s a lower quality cut of the tuna.
Wen Z — Google review
For sushi that's high quality and consistently good, come here. The floating sushi bar is cool and the selection that comes around is great. And if you want something that doesn't float on by, just order it off the menu. Service here has always been great during all my visits. The waitresses are prompt and attentive and the food comes out quickly. Prices here are reasonable too considering the quality you're getting. This isn't your all-you-can-eat quality here. Overall, one of the best sushi options in the city in my opinion. And considering this place has been around since the early 90s, others must think so too.
Justin S — Google review
Fune is probably the only place I know that has conveyor-belt sushi. Its my first time in Toronto but the sushi was fresh. The only disappointment is that it wasn't busy that day and not much people were sitting at the sushi bar so it was rotating the same kind of sushi. I was waiting for more of the sushi rolls (it was a torched salmon with mayo that melts right in your mouth) Eventually I never got to taste it again. It a good concept but next time I might go when its a bit more busier(maybe Saturday or Friday night) so I get more choices
Maks — Google review
The atmosphere of the restaurant is very cool. It has that dimly lit, mafia look to it but it's very nice. There's 2 rooms. The entrance room which is a Sushi bar where the dishes are pre-prepared and float in water onto of little Japanese boats, chained together. Very charming. The second room is that of your typical dining seating. The waitresses are very nice and polite. Our particular one was very bubbly and had an accent which added to the feeling of authenticity. I ordered from the normal menu so I didn't try anything from the sushi bar. The food itself was quite good, though not necessarily the best for the price point. I've had arguably better meals for much much less. That said, the atmosphere really adds to the experience. It's definitely a good location for a date or fancy meal.
Gianluca L — Google review
Service is mediocre. The location is convenient to a few nearby hotels. The food varies: the scallop sashimi was great, the unagi sushi was good, and the dragon roll was subpar, while the fried gyoza was rather disappointing. I assume they are using lower quality fish in their rolls so I would highly recommend just ordering sushi/sashimi a la carte individually from the menu. The main reason why I came for dinner here, however, was to get some uni, but to my big disappointment they ‘ran out’ of it by 8pm on a non-busy weekday while the restaurant was almost empty... Ooops! unacceptable for a japanese restaurant in city centre. To sum up overall, reasonable prices, spotty quality, not a top-notch sushi place but rather a casual joint.

JaBistro was the first ever set menu I got at a restaurant after I graduated university with my own money. I remember, at the time, the miso marinated black cod was the best dish I had ever eaten in my entire life. That was 8 years ago. Coming back now, after having eaten a ton of amazing food, that cod still lives up to my memory of it and ranks among some of the best food I've ever had.

JaBistro delivers an exceptional dining experience from start to finish. The service is warm, attentive, and perfectly paced, making you feel truly taken care of. Restaurant
Sushi Kaji Restaurant is an upscale and intimate dining spot located in a Queensway strip mall. Chef Mitsuhiro Kaji, often referred to as Toronto's Jiro Ono, offers two tasting menus featuring exquisite Japanese cuisine. The restaurant's cozy ambiance and limited seating of 30 make for an exclusive experience, with the best seats facing the open sushi preparation area where Chef Kaji meticulously crafts each dish.
The food was top notch and while pricey at $120 for the most basic omakase option it was good value for money. The fish is from Japan and other areas and of course this will come at a cost (most expensive went up to $190 including sashimi and wagyu sukiyaki and other more premium items). Each nigiri came well seasoned and balanced. (We had about 14 dishes/nigiri (not all pictured here). This restaurant has been an establishment in Etobicoke for years. While the outside is unassuming; the food and staff will speak for itself. The staff including chef Kaji was welcoming and professional. This place would be excellent for a special occasion!

What an amazing experience from start to finish. Intimate setting with only 20 or so seats and 2 seatings per evening. Attentive service, three choices of omakase to pick from. We opted for the full omakase and every bite was a delight from textures to flavours and the beautiful display. I suggest you sit at the counter or face it to watch the chefs in action to get the full experience.

Food was amazing, a bit pricey, but it’s what you can expect of a ‘tasting’ menu type of place. I would say for people that don’t like wasabi should ask without it as it was a bit too much for my wife’s liking. Definitely going back when budget permits.

The hype for this spot couldn’t be more deserved. My husband and I celebrated our anniversary here last night in lieu of a trip to Japan, and it was an experience we’ll remember for a long time. The service was impeccable—every staff member was friendly, attentive, and intuitive. From the moment we walked in to the moment we paid the bill, we felt thoughtfully cared for without a single detail overlooked. We chose to sit at the counter (highly recommended) to fully appreciate the artistry and precision behind every dish. From the delicate brush of wasabi to the perfectly placed furikake, each bite was meticulously prepared. We began with chicken dumplings, followed by black cod with a traditional Japanese omelette, and tuna tataki—all of which were divine. What followed was an array of the freshest sushi we’ve ever had, each piece presented with just the right amount of wasabi, fresh ginger for cleansing the palate, and helpful instructions on which should be dipped in soy sauce. A highlight was ending the sushi course with BBQ eel and a hand roll personally prepared by Chef Kaji. To close the savoury portion, we enjoyed cold soba noodles in a light broth with tempura flakes—slightly sweeter than my personal preference, but still delicious. Dessert was a creative play on blueberry cheesecake, with cottage cheese, whipped cream, fresh blueberries, and graham cracker crumble. It was the perfect finale: indulgent yet light and refreshing. Overall, Sushi Kaji is an absolute gem. It offers traditional Japanese cuisine and fine dining at its highest level—elevated yet approachable, without unnecessary pretentiousness. I couldn’t recommend it more.

Sushi Kaji was worthwhile experience for our friend's birthday celebration. The menu provided a very large portion of select Japanese delicacies for the group with a couple omakase options to suit everyone's preference. There was plenty of nigiri complemented by appetizers and sashimi or sukiyaki if you selected a premium option. They offered complimentary hojicha tea which was perfectly brewed. Every item was prepared with so much care and efficiency by all of the restaurant staff. The squid and tuna were phenomenal and some of the best we've had. Everything else was good but after being to Japan and Vancouver, we have had comparable or better quality at other higher end sushi restaurants. As a larger group we also unfortunately could not sit at the counter which felt a bit less exciting than the counter seats where the other customers got to interact with the chef. Either way, it is definitely worth trying if you are interested in omakase, but the experience may not be for everyone.

I've been looking forward to trying this restaurant since I first laid eyes on the non-descript exterior, when I first moved to Toronto in 09. My expectations were YEARS in the making, so yes, to say they were high is an understatement. Kaji exceeded my expectations (I have no idea how some rated Kaji with low stars). This was an outstanding EXPERIENCE. Thank you to the wonderful staff who made it a truly unforgettable evening. The flavours were unlike anything I've had in Canada - from the zested yuzu, to the homemade soy sauce, to the buttery fresh fish flown in from places like Japan, Scotland and PEI... To be able to sit in front of the kitchen and witness magic and art take place - priceless. Truly wonderful flavours and service. Incredible sushiya. Arigato gozaimasu.

This might just be one of the best Omakase experiences in the GTA. From the moment you sit down, you know you are in for something special. The place is small and cozy and not at all pretentious. Chef Mitsuhiro Kaji oversees the whole operation and you see him at work right in front of you, which is a treat to observe. And the food is out of this world! The fish which is both local and from Japan, is exceptionally fresh and delicate. There is a unique variety as well, great for anyone adventurous who wants to explore beyond the typical sushi options. All in all, I would highly recommend this restaurant. While the price is high, it is much more reasonable than the comparable Omakase places in Toronto. If you want to treat yourself, definitely give Sushi Kaji a try.
Pedram E — Google review
Been wanting to try it for yrrrrrs after Yasu. It certainly does not disappoint - not to exaggerate but this is the true definition of gourmet sushi. Some may argue about its price point but it's still "fair" in comparison. I'd go back again.

Authentic Japanese restaurant
Akira Back Restaurant, located in the Bisha Hotel in Toronto, is a high-end dining establishment offering a unique fusion of Japanese and Korean flavors with a modern twist. The restaurant boasts an extravagant interior design featuring black marble columns, gold detailing, and a striking blue graphic ceiling that creates an underwater ambiance.
We had an amazing time at Akira Back, and it wasnt just because the food and drinks were great, but the service was really good too. Our server was really nice and welcoming and she checked in on us quite frequently throughout our meal. We tried alot of different things from their menu and everything was tasty. I think the only thing we wouldn't get again is the sushi roll and we would try something else more unique on their menu like the king crab fried rice which is okay because it gives us more reasons to come back! The drinks were super unique I recommend everyone try the geisha cocktail at least once and for sure their miso cod dish rivals Nobu's, it was just as tasty. We would also go back for their wagyu tacos alone too those were BOMB.

A perfect asian dining experience- every dish was elegant and delicious, and the quality of the fish and meat was out of this world. A perfect place to get a wide variety of different dishes; you are guaranteed to have incredibly high quality fish and creative creations that balance different flavors perfectly. The presentation on all the dishes here is also amazing, with some of the most picturesque plates and presentations you could ask for. Dining at Akira Back is a delightful experience for every single sense, with everything from the atmosphere down to the drinks elevating the dining experience. If you enjoy asian cuisine, fine dining, and a restaurant that feels modern and popular, this is the place to be. Not a single dish disappointed and I hope to return soon.

From the moment we arrived, the service stood out—gracious, and attentive. The food was outstanding. Each dish was beautifully presented and perfectly balanced in flavour. A special highlight was when the renowned chef made his rounds through the dining room, personally greeting guests. It added a warm and personal touch that elevated the evening. Highly recommended for anyone looking for high-end cuisine paired with impeccable service.

Akira Back is a trendy, upscale restaurant known for blending traditional Japanese flavors with contemporary, global influences. If you’re talking about the one located in Las Vegas, it’s definitely one of those spots that brings an exciting, elevated twist to the dining scene. Ambience: The ambiance strikes a balance between sleek and welcoming—modern decor with subtle Asian-inspired touches. There's a chic, urban feel, with dim lighting setting a relaxed mood perfect for both casual and more refined dining experiences. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re about to experience something special but not overly stuffy. Menu & Dishes: Akira Back’s menu focuses on sushi, sashimi, and inventive Japanese-inspired dishes. The chef's background in both Korean and Japanese cuisines brings an intriguing fusion vibe, combining different textures and flavors in an unexpected yet complementary way. It’s not just sushi; the menu takes creative liberties, with items like the Toro Tartare, Miso Black Cod, or the Wagyu Beef offering a variety of rich, satisfying tastes.

Restaurant was a very nice vibe, amazing food. Definitely would go back for the wagyu beef tacos and sushi. Drinks were aesthetically pleasing but could have tasted better considering it took a while for both rounds to come. Service was a little slow; our server was nice however he didn't come around to check on us often. Overall a good experience but would have expected more on-point service for the price we were paying.

Sometimes you wonder about a restaurant whether the reputation is just hype, or whether the famous golden staircase has just taken social media by storm but the food isn't actually anything to write home about, so you're skeptical about giving the restaurant a chance. But then you finally go there and realize that the food is incredible and the reputation is spot on, and the experience is well worth every penny and you have no complaints about any aspect of the dishes, desserts, drinks and service. And Akira Back was exactly that experience for me.

A fantastic meal and experience. Our waitress was lovely, wine and cocktails were wonderful, food was delicious. Highly recommend the poke and Pop Rocks rolls. I could have lived without the octopus but it was ok. The environment is sexy and beautiful. They finished off our meal with a complementary dessert.

Yasu Toronto is a small, intimate restaurant offering a prix fixe Japanese omakase experience. Chef Yasu creates a daily tasting menu featuring fresh, seasonal, quality fish prepared expertly and thoughtfully. The restaurant celebrates the craft of sushi with its award-winning dishes. The Omakase course consists of approximately 20 items including appetizers, sushi, and dessert for $135 per person. This original location in Toronto offers an authentic and memorable Japanese dining experience that cuts no corners.
First Omakase dining experience, never had quality fish like that before, flavour and texture was mouth watering and fresh. How does one go back to regular fish from here. Service was ok. Atmosphere and vibe of the restaurant was nice. Quiet and intimate mainly because of how small it was but that’s not a bad thing. Dinner was quite pricey which was expected but I wasn’t expecting to be starving after so we went around the corner to get dinner.
ModeParChocolat — Google review
I would say this is one of the more upscale omakase places in Toronto especially with that price range. It’s a very intimate setting and I loved the assortment of dishes we got at the beginning. One thing I was a little surprised was that most of the fish wasn’t from Japan. I think I expected it to be given that price but everything was very fresh and service was excellent

Visited for my second time after trying out another omakase restaurant and nothing beats the food preparation, menu variety and atmosphere at yasu. Was so happy i was able to try the dish served in the beautiful floral dish they've recently been serving. It's gorgeous and tasty plus the aftertaste from that I believe are edible flowers(?) was such a lovely surprise. Hostess was also very friendly and accommodating. Can't wait to dine here again.

We were recommended this place by a family member while we were visiting Toronto and it turned out to be our best meal of the whole trip. The sushi was amazing with some of the courses e.g. the lean tuna really surprising us with how delicious it was. It was well worth the price. Our chef was so friendly and lovely and had a long chat with us about Canada and gave us some great recommendations on things to do. The beer was also amazing (and I’m not a beer drinker) and we would definitely come back if we are ever back in Toronto.

A very personalized sushi experience. Excellent quality and authentic flavors. Loved the sesame ice cream. We did have a scale in one of our sushi which was a bit surprising but they were quick to fix the mistake and spoke to us personally afterwards.

My wife and I went here for our anniversary dinner and we had an excellent experience. The food was, of course, delicious and the chef took the time check in and ask on occasion if everything was too our liking. The entire staff was very friendly overall, but you have to reserve in advance.
Sam N — Google review
As a frequent Japan visitor, this place is top notch. The fish was delicate and the kaiseki was unique. Even after reading the 1-star comments, many of them noted the food was delicious but unhappy about the 18% service charge even though no tipping is involved. Many Omakases in Japan charge this as well.
Ralph C — Google review
Tried the omakase, and the sushi and entrées were excellent—very close to what you get in Japan, though the fish comes from other countries rather than Japan itself. My only negative comment is the smell of the restaurant. The fishy smell was overwhelming. We tried all three caviar add-ons: the best was the toro with caviar sushi, followed by the uni with caviar sushi, and my least favorite was the caviar sushi alone. The chef was highly experienced and executed each dish perfectly. I definitely recommend this experience—but be careful, it’s very expensive; our bill came to around $830. Small place, not many seats available.

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Queen East, Yumei Sushi Japanese Restaurant has been a beloved culinary destination since 1995. This charming eatery offers an extensive menu that caters to sushi lovers and ramen enthusiasts alike, featuring everything from fresh sashimi to crispy tempura dishes. The inviting atmosphere is adorned with decorative fish, creating a cozy ambiance perfect for enjoying a meal. Yumei Sushi stands out not just for its delicious offerings but also for its exceptional service.
Sorry- we were too hungry to take pics of food! It was excellent. Especially the spicy fish soup- my goodness best thing ever. My husband had the vegetarian dragon roll made with tofu on top and eggplant in the centre and it was very good! I had the salmon dragon making- also excellent! But the spicy fish soup was the highlight I will go back just for that!

Had high hopes for this sushi restaurant as it’s one of the more expensive ones available on Queen Street East. Although the inside is beautiful and gave it 5 stars for atmosphere, it didn’t change the fact that the sushi/rolls/ pizza all tasted “off” and extremely fishy. We didn’t even finish a lot of what we ordered unfortunately.

We were in the area and decided to try this place, and it turned out to be a great experience. The food was delicious, and we got a little side table that felt so private and cozy! The waitress was also very knowledgeable and attentive, especially when I mentioned my wheat allergy. If we’re back in the area, we’ll definitely return.

I have to say I was extremely surprised by the quality of food at this restaurant. On average, I would eat sushi once a week and Vancouver and Cabo san Lucas. As you can imagine the seafood there is very fresh. Not only was our meal here spectacular but they had a personalized touch they made. The Ebi Salad was spectacular. The entire meal was excellent. Loved it as much as I did. it’s only the second time I’ve eaten sushi since being here in Toronto and so far is the best. Highly recommend.

Here’s a roughly 200-word review of Yumei Sushi in Toronto’s Beaches district: ⸻ Tucked along Queen Street East, Yumei Sushi has been a beloved local staple since 1995, helmed by Chef Young Lee, whose experience spans back to 1979 . The restaurant offers a cozy, low-key vibe with decorative touches and intimate seating—perfect for relaxed dinners or casual nights out . The sushi and sashimi here consistently impress with their freshness and thoughtful presentation, drawing praise for standout dishes like spicy fish soup, handcrafted rolls, sashimi omakase, and creative maki . One reviewer raves that “the food and care put into presentation … nothing compares” , while others highlight the “excellent sashimi, tasty rolls, and outstanding spicy fish soup” . Service at Yumei Sushi tends to be warm and welcoming—many patrons feel treated like family by the attentive staff . That said, a few past comments mention occasional slow service or inconsistent waitstaff attentiveness . Overall, Yumei Sushi offers superb quality and value—a harmonious blend of fresh seafood, creative dishes, and friendly hospitality. Whether you’re looking for comforting favorites or chef’s specials, it comes highly recommended for both regulars and first-time sushi aficionados.

If you're looking for an authentic experience you must sit at the sushi bar where Chef Lee will curate the best of the day dishes for you depending on what you're feeling. We love coming here as it feels like a home away from home! Hospitality; check, food; check, vibe; check - there's a reason why it's been a long standing staple in the area!

Izakaya restaurant
Japanese restaurant
Hanmoto is a cozy izakaya with a flea market decor that offers Japanese-style snacks and drinks. The restaurant serves Japanese-American style small plates in a close-quartered dining room with neon signage, creating a raucous late-night atmosphere inspired by the rowdy izakaya of Japan.
One of my favorite dining spots in Toronto. Great for small groups or date nights. Their dyno wings, miso steak, salmon aburi and miso icr-cream are highlights for me but to be honest everything I've had from the menu is delicious. Their cocktails are also on point! The space is small and you can expect a wait list for a table on the weekends as they don't take reservations. But totally worth the wait and they have seating outside as well to accommodate those waiting. If you are driving in on a weekend be wary that street parking is a bit difficult to find but that's Toronto on a typical weekend anyway. Come prepared to drive around a bit before you find a spot. The green P nearby gets full pretty quickly on the weekend as well.

Super easy to miss this place since there’s no sign, and it’s hidden behind another restaurant. it kind of feels like you’re walking into someone’s back entrance by mistake. once you’re in, it’s got a cozy, low-lit vibe with a bunch of tables packed into a pretty small space. We thought the food would be small, shareable bites, but the portions were actually way bigger than expected. The three of us ordered five dishes, but honestly, four would’ve been more than enough - especially since none of us were super hungry. The okra was my favorite: cooked just right, great flavor, and a nice bit of spice. The Dyno Wings were interesting - basically a chicken wing with a pork meatball stacked on top. If you’re into meat, it totally works. The eggplant dish surprised me because it was a lot sweeter than I expected, but still tasty. The karaage was decent, nothing out of the ordinary, but exactly what you’d want if you like classic Japanese fried chicken. All in all, it’s a cool little spot with some fun dishes and good vibes

This spot serves incredible Japanese street-food-style dishes. The menu is small but perfectly curated — and the portions are just right for sharing, so if you come with a group, you can practically taste the whole menu. It’s a tiny space with limited seating and no reservations, so you’ll need to join the waitlist. We waited two hours, but it was absolutely worth it. The moto eggs and dumpling-stuffed chicken wings were fire! I’d definitely come back.

I’ve been here before but came back and it was much better than I remembered! The food was absolutely delicious. I’m not usually a fan of okra but the flavouring of the okra was SO tasty. The emoki mushrooms were incredibly soft. We also got the hand roll and it was so delicious and presented in such a unique way in the little cans. I also just loved how big the portions were it was incredibly filling. We also got the salmon aburi and the moto eggs. The prices were very reasonable and we walked out FULL. The vibe is very small and cozy.

Charming Izakaya spot with beautiful dishes served. You must get the Moto Eggs and Dyno Wings, 10/10 so so good. I wish there were more salmon in the Salmon Aburi especially towards the bottom of the roll, but other than that, it was really good, and beautifully served by the way. The moto bun is quite good but could be better - a crispy chicken paired with the curry sauce would complement the soft bun. The service was really good and the server we had was very friendly. Overall a really great experience and would recommend.

Great spot for Japanese bar food with an elevated twist. My particular favourite was the surf and turf handroll and moto eggs, but everything was delicious! That said, the portion sizes weren’t the biggest for the price point (it might be slightly pricier than you expect). Staff was friendly and educated us on how to eat every dish. Food was served decently quickly. Cool vibes! Would come back.

Japanese restaurant
Ikkousha Ramen Toronto is a popular eatery offering traditional Japanese ramen, gyoza, and fried chicken wings. With two locations in Toronto, one serving pork-based dishes and the other specializing in chicken ramen, it caters to diverse preferences. The chef's recommended dish is the Signature Tonkotsu, known for its rich and creamy broth true to Hakata-style ramen.
The ramen here is solid, especially the soup base, which is packed with flavour. The line can get long, but it’s totally worth the wait. Prices are fair for the portion size, and service is quick with friendly staff. This was my second visit, and the taste has been consistently great. Just a heads-up: if you’re into spicy food, tread lightly with level 4. My husband, who snacks on chilis like nothing, was sweating and couldn’t finish…..it’s seriously intense!
Gilia N — Google review
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Authentic Hakata Ramen That Hits the Spot! If you're craving rich, soul-warming tonkotsu ramen, Ikkousha Ramen is the real deal. Their signature Hakata-style ramen features creamy, collagen-rich broth that’s simmered for hours, every spoonful is packed with deep, porky umami. The thin noodles have the perfect chew, and the melt-in-your-mouth chashu pork is simply divine. If you don’t like thin noodles or you think the broth is too salty, you can definitely ask for thicker one and go for the less salty option! I customized mine with extra garlic meat and egg and vege, which took it to the next level. The soft-boiled ajitama egg was another highlight, gooey yolk perfection. The cozy counter seating adds to the authentic Japanese ramen-ya vibe. Service is efficient, and they’re serious about ramen, no frills, just bowls of pure comfort. One of the best ramen spots in town, I’ll be back for sure!
Diddy L — Google review
Today, I ordered the God Fire Ramen. Choice of 4 levels of heat and I chose level 3. Good choice since anything hotter meant not being able to taste anything else. For most looking for spice, I would suggest level one. The pork broth was really thick and tasty. The ramen came with two large slices of pork cha shu, green onions and a good amount of wood ear mushrooms. The thin straight noodles were firm and held the broth really well. Great selection of condiments as you can see in one of the photos. The ramen sauce is very salty with a touch of vinegar. The garlic is freshly chopped and the ginger is your typical red coloured ginger slices. The Takana pickles is a good addition when ordering one of the lighter tasting ramen bowls. I ordered some gyoza also. Very tasty but unfortunately too small for me. Order came with five pieces that were about half the size I am used to. Nice touch was some umeboshi (pickled plum) that added a good level of additional flavour to the gyoza. Service was good and very fast. If I was to choose between their chicken location only a few doors away, I would choose the chicken location. With that being said, I would have to go back again and try some of their other ramen selections to be sure. If you are in the area, either location is a good choice.
Bob K — Google review
Simple, authentic and delicious ramen without any fuss. The service was quick and easy. The portion is great and there is an option to add more noodles. The gyoza is delicious and light, perfect little appetizer. Recommend adding all the pickled sides for more flavour
Bella M — Google review
This is my go-to ramen restaurant in Toronto, and I’ve probably visited dozens of times by now. I finally tried the black flavour, and it was really good with layered flavours with depth. The only downside was that the soup came out noticeably colder than usual, almost lukewarm. Since this has never happened before, I’m assuming it was a rare mistake, so I won’t take off any points. I really hope it doesn’t happen again because this place has always been such a reliable favourite for me.

Amazing ramen!! Great broth and solid portion of food! Service is great and super friendly and attentive. Able to get in without reservation. Not a ton of pace for bigger groups but 4 or less people should be easy enough to snag a table or with minor waits.

One of the best reman in the city. This brand has two shop - one just serve chicken broth one just pork - what a smart idea. The pork one always supper busy with long lines and less lines in the chicken one but just as goood . Koke Teppanyaki & BBQ is a lively restaurant that offers both teppanyaki and Japanese BBQ under one roof. They proudly serve a variety of meats, including Ontario pork, Canadian beef, high-quality Wagyu, A5 premium Japanese Wagyu, and certified Kobe beef. The skilled chefs expertly grill an array of meats and seafood at the teppanyaki tables. Customers have praised the reasonable prices and excellent service at Koke Teppanyaki & BBQ.
Honestly, this is one of the greatest restaurants that I've ever been to. We did the all you can eat middle menu, which I believe was Beef Lovers. The food altogether is very high quality and fresh, which is important for restaurants where you grill your own food. They don't put sauces all over the meat before they give it to you, and they give you the option to put sesame sauce, BBQ sauce, and soy sauce. You have the choice to eat healthier. The waitress who came to serve us was very kind and taught us how to grill different kinds of meat (thin meats, thicker meats, lamb chops, etc.). They play nice music and the place is clean. We came for a birthday, and they gave us a nice dessert plate with orange slices, a scoop of ice cream, etc. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant, and I will most definitely come back.

Trying Japanese BBQ for the first time was an incredible culinary adventure! What truly stood out was the quality of the meat—exceptional and expertly prepared. The wagyu, in particular, was the star of the show, melting in my mouth with its rich, buttery texture and leaving me wanting more with every bite. The entire experience, from grilling each cut to savoring the bold, umami-packed flavors, was both interactive and deeply satisfying. It’s an absolute must-try for anyone who enjoys premium meats and a unique, hands-on dining experience. I’m already looking forward to my next visit. I actually went back again over Victoria Day weekend, and once again, it didn’t disappoint. The service was outstanding—from the friendly staff to the incredibly kind and attentive owner. Everyone went out of their way to make us feel welcome.

Fun place to come with a big group but also nice for an intimate night out. They have ala carte and ayce options and a teppanyaki section. Meat selections are high quality. You can choose from a couple of ayce sets according to your budget which is good. Our server was very very good. Friendly and super helpful. And if you bring cash, you get a discount!

Excellent service. My first time to a bbq like this. Server was excellent and helped me pick out a good selection of items. Server even took the time to show me how to properly grill on this style of bbq. They were also able to accommodate my shellfish sensitivity. Miso and egg sauces were great. Price for all you can eat bbq setup is a few more dollars on weekends. There is Teppanyaki here but I chose bbq.

My first visit to Koko Teppanyaki left me a mixed impression as to the food quality, services and atmosphere. While it gave us an impeccable experience with their service attentiveness, prompt delivery and impressive chef's skill performance, we were a bit disappointed with the raw beef freshness which seemed to me is below the standard quality of meat. However we were delighted that a Wednesday under advertised 20% cash discount were disclosed to us at the cashier counter.
Charles L — Google review
Once the fan turned on at the teppanyaki, the smell of washroom came out of nowhere. The waitress didn’t provide good customer services. The waitress rushed us in the very rude way when we were looking at the menu, and constantly got into our space to put down food. She didn’t take the order properly and came back multiple times to ask. The chef was in a rush to get food cooked and put salt very off the food. He cooked well but food quality wasn’t very good!

Went for the weekday lunch all-you-can-eat beef lover Japanese BBQ, $26 per person. Seating feels very private, with all separate booths. The food was nicely presented and of pretty good quality. Service was exceptional. Granted that the restaurant wasn’t too busy, all the servers were friendly and attentive. Had a fantastic experience. I recommend this restaurant. 5% discount for cash payment. Plenty of parking!

We have a splendid lunch experience with set lunch for quality beef and all you can eat on the other side of the menu with salad/ sides dishes/ dessert, shrimp, fish and etc. lunch was 26 plus tax and tips ended up 32.5 each so full I didn’t need dinner. Will return and highly recommended

Yuzuki Japanese Restaurant is a popular spot for sushi lovers, with a wide selection of a la carte sushi and sashimi. The chefs at Yuzuki come from different regions in Japan, bringing their expertise to create authentic and delicious dishes. One standout dish is the sake steamed clams, which captures the pure flavors of Japan. The restaurant also offers traditional New Year foods called osechi, with options for two-person or four-person meals.
I absolutely love Yuzuki! Every time I come here, the food is incredibly fresh and beautifully prepared — you can really taste the quality of the ingredients. The sushi is delicate, the flavors are well-balanced, and the presentation is always thoughtful. The staff are warm, attentive, and make you feel genuinely welcome, which adds so much to the experience. The atmosphere is calm and authentic, perfect for enjoying Japanese cuisine without feeling rushed. It has quickly become one of my favorite places in Toronto, and I always look forward to coming back. Highly recommended for anyone who loves real Japanese food!

The menu has many interesting options to choose from, several of which I haven’t had before, so I ordered the ones that I have not yet tried in other restaurants. While the selection of fish is indeed interesting, the final result isn’t good. The rice was dry and crumbly, which took away the taste a lot and made the experience unpleasant. The cut of the fish itself isn’t that great either, but the rice was the main issue for me. Shirako Grilled I’ve had this in ponzu, and on sushi, but not yet as tempura or grilled, and grilled seemed interesting to me, so I gave it a try. Indeed, ponzu is better. The grilling seemed to make it shrink, and I just don’t like the texture as much. The shirako here seems really overpriced, when I could have gotten good tasting shirako for less elsewhere. Iwagaki Deep Fried Tastes alright, nothing special. I ended up paying ~$150 at the end for this lunchtime meal. Not worth it…

Some of the best sushi I’ve had in Toronto. Prices are on the higher side, but the quality mostly reflects that. They have a bunch of unique dishes and fish options that you can’t find anywhere else! Staff were super friendly too

Recently discovered this “hidden gem” and I’ve already been twice in one week. Quality of food is excellent and the fish is very fresh (you can taste the difference). Price is fair and service is friendly. Some of the dishes that I’ve tried that I would recommend: - sake steamed clams - fried squid - shrimp tempura - seafood udon noodle soup - seafood don (donburi)
Ray L — Google review
The most expensive prices I’ve ever seen. Ordered Sushi & Salmon Teriyaki and Tuna Maki - the best part was the salad. The salmon was dry, edamame not salted and the sushi mediocre. I appreciate the charming presentation, decorations and attire, but it’s not worth the hefty price tag for average quality food and puny portions.

Fast and friendly service. The restaurant and staff are designed and dressed in traditional Japanese attire making for an authentic feeling experience. Unfortunately, this is what makes a subpar meal cost as much as a higher end restaurant. The food tasted average. My teriyaki salmon was overcooked (almost dry) and I think there might have been a small piece of hair in one of my dish. 🤣
Nikko T — Google review
I'll keep this review objective--but brutally honest. Pros: The ambiance is admittedly excellent: a clever mix of western bar and Japanese izakaya. The sushi counter, manned by actual Japanese chefs, delivers fresh ingredients with obvious skill and respect for the craft. And of course, the location--Bloor and Yonge-couldn't be more convenient. Cons: And now the ugly truth: 1. If you're dining solo, prepare to be invisible. My food took an eternity to arrive. Yes, even something as basic as a grilled mackerel. At some point, I wondered if they were waiting for the fish to swim back from Japan. 2. The open-kitchen chefs clearly know their art. The back-kitchen? Not so much. My mackerel came with the bile sac broken--rookie mistake 101--so one side tasted like a spoonful of bitter medicine. Anyone who has ever grilled mackerel knows how amateur that is. 3. The waitress serving me deserves a special mention--for sheer arrogance. After making me wait an age, she dismissed my complaint with a straight face, claiming this was "normal." Translation: either she doesn't know her job, or she thinks the customer is an idiot. When I pressed, she refused an exchange, refused even a token refund, and finally walked off pretending I didn't exist. For context: I was a single diner spending over $100. If Hermes down the street treated customers this way, they'd go bankrupt in a week. You are more condescending than the SA in the Hermes fair lady! Verdict: This place could be worth it--if only the back kitchen and floor staff cared half as much as the sushi chefs. Maybe it was a bad night, maybe it was bias against solo diners. Either way, it turned what should have been a good meal into a lesson in patience and bitterness. TLDR: What a pity! まあ、仕方ないですよね(笑)

Great service and amazing quality sushi. Unfortunately, I found a huge fish scale in one of our sushi pieces. I understand it is fish so there are scales but at this price point there should be better quality control.

Authentic Japanese restaurant
Yukashi Japanese Cuisine offers a colorful and playful dining experience, with an omakase menu that showcases dishes crafted with intricate attention to detail. The restaurant's executive Chef Daisuke Izutsu creates creative and evolving plates, featuring favorites like fatty tuna belly and Wagyu beef. Yukashi has gained recognition, including a Michelin star, for its beautiful, fresh, and delicious tasting menu.
We tried Yukashi on a heavy snowy night but the whole experience made us forget about the hassles and troubles the snow brought. Love the cozy and super clean environment this little place offered which made us feel like we were in Japan for a second. Even the detailed decors on the way to washroom worth a photoshoot. The food tasted amazing and the presentation made each dish into an art piece!! We really appreciated the dedication and creativity Chef Izutsu and his team put into their work. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Chef Izutsu is a super professional , friendly and funny guy who has his own unique humour that we enjoyed a lot during the entire dinner :) Will definitely come back in spring when they change the menu. Highly recommended!

I love that somehow eating freshly torched foie gras on A5 Hidagyu wagyu beef, doesn’t seem crazy and pretentious and the chef makes you feel absolutely at home at his bar as he serves up delicious dish after dish. The chef has a great sense of humour, is so incredibly knowledgeable and the staff are very attentive. I also very much appreciated that I got stuck in traffic and while my friends did start without me, he waited until I was there to freshly prepare the couple of dishes I was behind on. I admit I was nervous to go eat there having not liked uni before at other places and seeing on reviews them used in a few dishes - I was thankfully wrong and I loved it. Fresh food and their origin does make that much of a difference! It is a pricy experience and if you have a big appetite you might want more but it was absolutely worth it. Sake menu very extensive as well (I can’t recall what I tried, one light and one deeper flavour - both were delicious!). Small differences like freshly grating the wasabi, even salt, made such lovely touches. Some dishes are so beautiful (the most complex matcha cookie, a smoked tomato flavour bomb, freshly puffed wheat dish was quite something!) while others are less picturesque but no less yummy. Also: having now had the crown musk melon, all other melon will be spoiled for a bit but wow what a lovely last bite (and epic knife to carve it).

A wonderful and unique Japanese restaurant. We had our meal at the counter and had great conversations with the chef as he prepared the courses. The food was spectacular. I've had Japanese cuisine many times (including in Japan), and this was special. Highly recommended. It's become a favourite of ours, and we feel fortunate to have picked this place to celebrate our anniversary.

Elevated Michelin-quality fine dining featuring the rich Japanese cuisine culture. Yukashi is definitely not your typical omakase restaurant. Most omakase restaurants in Toronto offer only sushi and sashimi. The rare ones offer a full omakase meal built around their tempura dishes. However, you are treated to a full 9-course meal at Yukashi conceived and constructed by executive chef Daisuke Izutsu. Chef Izutsu was brought to Toronto from Japan as a private chef for the Consulate General of Japan in 2001. He served the Japanese royal family, heads of government and celebrities from all over the world in that role. When we were at his restaurant last weekend, he was quick to point out that he was a Japanese Kaiseki (formal meal) chef, not a sushi chef. And the 9-course meal we enjoyed that evening was inspired by Kaiseki and interpreted by Chef Izutsu. All the ingredients were flown in from Japan, from yuzu to musk melon, wasabi plant to sea urchin. The evening started with an appetite constructed around sea urchin served over egg custard. The mixed textures and tastes of the two elevated the sea urchin to the next level. Then a soup was prepared fresh in front of our eyes, with Chef Izutsu explaining the ingredients and how to enjoy it. And enjoyed the soup we did. The taste was delicate and layered. The soup was followed by a deep-fried fish with very small and delicate scales providing the texture of batter, and the dish was outstanding. Thinly slices Wagyu beef were torched with foie gras, sea urchin and freshly prepared wasabi together. The concoctions just melted in the mouth when consumed rolled up with a sprig of shiso. The main course was a smorgasbord (I know I am mixing cultures here…) of delicacies from tempura to eggs, with copious number of interesting touches in between to cleanse the palate. I will not go into details to describe each item as they could only be experienced together for full effect. We were the treated to the chef's interpretation of shabu-shabu and it was followed by Japanese style risotto with a mix of rice and barley. Needless to say, both were outstanding. Chef Izutsu was friendly and hospitable. He was also precise and exacting. It was apparent that he loved his art, and he was a tremendous artist. If you are looking for a Michelin-star meal that is out of the ordinary, you should give Yukashi a try. You will gain a memorable experience and new appreciation for Kaiseki.

Chef is the coolest guy, had great conversations with him. Also food is top notch, by far better than other Michelin places like shoushin and kappo. Hands down the best Toronto. The chef’s extensive background is definitely reflected in his dishes.

Our experience at Yukashi was incredible. It was sophisticated, yet intimate. The staff were helpful when ordering drinks, describing the dishes, and were there waiting to serve us. The food was beautiful, unique, and very flavorful. The texture of the fish, meat, vegetables and sauces, paired well together. I tried new things I have never had, and found out I liked things I never thought I liked. The chef was funny, kind, and extremely passionate about his craft. You can tell he has created and cultured an incredible team to support his vision in the restaurant. There was not one dish we didn't like. It was all, perfect. All different. All pairing well together. And... To top it off, this is a unique non-Torontonian restaurant. Thank goodness. We have been trying to find something different. This is the perfect place for a date, a celebration, a business meeting. It is worth every penny. And don't be like me, get the drink pairing. I definitely missed out. My gf forgot to take pictures of everything, but I'll share what we did take. Definitely a failure on our part. So beautiful. The food was so breathtaking, we were in the moment and forgot to take pictures.

Skippa is a stylish Japanese restaurant located in Harbord Village, known for its innovative approach to traditional Japanese cuisine. The menu features a variety of sushi, small plates, and tasting menus, with an emphasis on using lesser-known fish varieties. The restaurant offers a weekly 'Skippa at Home' menu, including the 'Trust Skippa' option with optional add-ons and sake and wine pairings.
Incredible hospitality and good food. We came here for dinner last week and I'm still thinking about how good the whole experience was. We went for the omakase option and our server (Tomo?) was attentive and explained each and every dish to us. Everything was so fresh and well presented. I'm not a huge fan of veggies but the delicate and respectful way they treated each dish won me over. My favorite dish was the wagyu with edamane. The umami was seeping through every bite of it. Truly a dish to remember for the ages.
Claire H — Google review
Our experience at Skippa was very good overall. We decided to got for the Trust Skippa menu at $120 pp. Our favourite part of the menu was definitely the sushis. The rest was also tasty but not as great. I would say that overall out of the 13 bites we loved 5, we liked 5. In our opinion 120$ is a bit too expensive also because if you add extra bites to taste their special it becomes a 200-240$/pp meal with alcohol. The goods: high quality of products mainly coming from Japan, and not just the fish, take time to taste the rest and smell your bite before eating it :) The staff is attentive; your tea and water is always full. Sit at the bar; it’s great to see them work and pay so much attention to details. All of them. Some things they could improve: they remove the plates too fast. Sometimes as we were eating our bite, the waitress was behind us ready to pick up the plates. The wine selection is too limited. I know... we should drink sake, but offering only 3 choices of white wines by the glass compared to a good list of beers & sake. And finally, we were very cold in the restaurant (they are aware of this issue): they should put extra heat in wintertime as this is affecting our experience. If we go back, we will go eat sushi.

6 stars! Some of the freshest fish and best presentation I've ever seen. On par with high end places we've been in NY and SF at a fraction of the price. Was really fun to sit at the bar and watch the prep. The mushrooms over Japanese charcoal is incredible and has so much depth of flavor. Chef is super kind and shared cool stories about how the restaurant came about. Definitely a gem in Toronto and deserving of many accolades!

We chose the "Trust Skippa" - tasting menu. I am unsure if this number changes, but this will run you around $150 per person Pair your entire meal with a bottle of sake (we chose a fruity and light flavour from Fukuoka). The selection sent to us was absolutely delicious from first course to last. They timed everything perfectly. I would go again.

We ordered the full tasting menu and it was great! Its dimmer atmosphere than you might expect and 1 piece of sushi was oversalted, but overall a very satisfying meal. Very attentive and friendly service!

Nice omakase with some novel dish. A little bit crowd if you sit at the bar but hey have the open kitchen you can see how they working on your food. Love their sushi, they also explained where is the fish from. One of my tip for the sushi is eat that when it comes to you do not take a photo because the rice will get cold and kill the flavor. You can try my tips with one sushi and take photo will another one then you will know what I am saying:)

Went to Skippa for the last seating of the evening. A small but cozy place, and easy to miss if you're not paying attention. We both had the omakase (there is no regular menu) and everything was delicious. This place is great and not as pretentious as other Toronto omakase sushi places ( yasu, shoushin) Great stuff.

Skippa is wonderful. Fresh wild caught fish, amazing local ingredients, inspired modern takes on Japanese cuisine. We had a truly wonderful experience dining at Skippa. We enjoyed the "TRUST SKIPPA" tasting menu which basically equates to a thoughtful journey through the majority of the menu. Starting out with several rounds of appetizers, each dish was delicately prepared and tastefully presented. By the time the sushi courses began, we were already nearly satisfied. Thankfully each piece of Nigiri was fresh and light, delicate and delicious. The peaches and cream ice cream to finish the meal was a true delight. If I had to name one must-try piece of fish, it would definitely be the amberjack!

The Michelin-starred establishment is known for its Kyoto-style elevated tasting menus curated by esteemed Chef Nakagawa. The modern interpretation of Kyo-Kaiseki, a traditional Kyoto-style course menu, embodies and elevates the tradition to create a distinctively contemporary experience.
Super sad as this will be the last review I do of this phenomenal restaurant. Wife and I attended the final dinner service and it was fantastic. Fantastic dinner service. we settle in for the 8-course tasting menu ($300 per person) and 6-drink pairing ($150 per person) as different staff come and went to present items. Everyone was polite and friendly but also seemed to be regurgitating a well rehearsed script. It’s felt oddly formal even as I tried cracking jokes with them. Oh well, I’m here for the food. The meal starts with the lobster usuimame a piece of barely cooked lobster wrapped around a delicate fish paste that’s well… fishy. A swig of water helps dissipate the bad taste in my mouth as does drinking the silky sweet pea infused dashi at the bottom of the bowl. I even admire the cute bird carved from an heirloom carrot before popping it into my mouth and enjoying the sweetness. The meal improves as the otoro and caviar sushi monaka is presented. The crispy mochi wafer is filled with a layer of well vinegared sushi rice and topped with tuna belly, pickled daikon, creamy dollops of uni (?), and of hefty teaspoon of caviar. Each bite is deliciously fresh and flavourful. It’s then a glass of hot sake is poured for the lamb yuba, a cube of four-hour braised lamb belly topped with silky layers of yuba mixed with Japanese mustard. It’s a dish that goes well with the theme of the “early spring” menu: a reminder that sometimes in the spring, a hit of winter comes back, and you’ll want something hearty. I’ve never liked flowers, but the maguro flower is one I’d love to get. The rose petals, made from two type of lean tuna, sit on a bed of grated radish. The tender aged tuna goes wonderfully with the thickened daikon soy and scallion oil that surrounds the plate. I can see why this is considered a timeless dish, beautiful to look at and a treat to eat. Every restaurant seems to be doing the flash fried scale-on amadai. Don’t get me wrong, I love the dish and am not complaining, but it’s such a fan favourite that it’s gracing everyone’s menu. Aburi Hana creates an amadai cauliflower, where the tilefish is charbroiled then flash fried. We’re told that if we want a spoon to enjoy the dashi and cauliflower sauce at the end to just ask. I got it right at the beginning and was glad that I could have a spoon of the savoury sauce with every taste of the fish. My heart went a flutter seeing the kamo akamiso containing two of my favourite ingredients – roasted duck and maitake mushroom – on one plate. While the fowl is a touch chewy, it’s nonetheless flavourful from being smoked and the skin having lovely crispiness. You really need a strong protein to hold up against the deep rich miso sauce, that gives the dish a savoury taste that’s balanced off by a sweet burst from the honey pearls. My only complaint is the wine pairing, which tasted off and was much too light for the dish. This is a long review head to Gastro World for the rest.
Gastro W — Google review
Great service and the menu was very well crafted. The duck and mushroom dish left a bit to be desired and was quite tough. I would say overall the Japanese dishes were extremely well crafted while the more Canadian inspired dishes felt a bit unrefined. Would definitely still come back to try it again.

Dined at Aburi Hana prior to head chef departing. Food was excellent. Unfortunately, the desserts did not meet the standards of the other dishes. Ordered tea but had to ask repeatedly to have the teapot refilled with hot water…perhaps the hot water kettle should be left for the diners to refill themselves while in a private room.

Such an incredible kaiseki experience. Chef Ryusuke Nakagawa put so much creativity and thoughtfulness into each dish. Gorgeous display of the early summer seasonality. Also big shout out to Pastry Chef Aiko Uchigoshi who despite we hadn’t met in person but her Miyazaki Mango Young Ginger dish and olive oil cucumber ice cream are both so fun and delicious to eat. Thank you! Can’t wait for the new season menu already. Looking forward to the next food adventure with Aburi Hana.
Wx Z — Google review
I recently dined at Aburi Hana and left very underwhelmed. The food presentation was beautiful, but the taste did not live up to the visuals. The uni somen was mediocre, the texture between the uni and the thin noodles just didn’t work well together. My favorite dish was the ayu tade. Their signature maguro flower is certainly eye-catching, but unfortunately more presentable than it tastes. Overall, the food met expectations for a corporate-style fine dining spot: polished, elegant décor and plating, but nothing memorable in flavor. What really disappointed me was the service. I found a dead bug in my water (at a Michelin one-star restaurant, no less). I discreetly waved over the server, showed it to her, and she simply took the glass away. Ten minutes later, she brought me a new one. no apology, no acknowledgment. Later, when I mentioned it again to another staff member (who seemed more senior) while she was introducing the next course, her overly theatrical reaction felt 200% fake. Both my friend and I found it rude and insincere, as though she was performing an apology instead of genuinely offering one. For a restaurant of this caliber, I expected attentive, authentic service and thoughtful handling of situations like this. Sadly, Aburi Hana fell far short of that standard.

Koyoi is a cozy restaurant in Toronto that offers a menu of Japanese comfort foods and a full bar. It's known as a local hangout spot for Japanese people in the restaurant industry, offering an authentic taste of home and a wide selection of sake. The staff is hospitable, and the atmosphere is beautiful, especially in the summer. Customers recommend trying their delicious Japanese bar food, such as karaage and curry fries, which pair perfectly with their drinks mixed with calpico.
Probably a great place for drinks but their food doesn't disappoint either. Many fares are geared towards tapas style, and the service is great. With the amount of space they occupy inside, it's surprising they have that many items in their menu. There's a patio during the warmer days.

authentic Japanese food but the portions were small to share amongst three people (except for the curry fries — which were delicious). we found ourselves continuing to order food because we were still hungry. however, everything was seasoned well, and the fish cakes were particularly good. they offered a seasonal maze udon which was light and refreshing. great selection of drinks and happy hour made it better. worth a try!

My boyfriend and I stopped by for what was supposed to be a quick beer and ended up dropping 2 bills because we were enjoying ourselves so much! Koyoi is a no frills, cozy spot for delicious cold plates and deep fried tapas plates and a great selection of sake, beer and cocktails. The menu is creative with weekly specials. Our server was extremely sweet and attentive. We ordered a variety of cold and hot small dishes, such as the chicken karaage, deep fried oysters, squid, udon, the tako and ikura cold plates with seaweed, cold udon with poached egg, and the beef tongue. The flavours of every dish exceeded our expectations! The cold udon was a bit over cooked and so was the beef tongue, and those are my only complaints (not like it matters) - Go on Tuesday-Thursday night for really good deals (10 karaage + pitcher of Sapporo for 32$!).

Authentic izakaya food in a bright little restaurant. One of the best, most authentic Japanese meals in the city. The food is incredible; get an assortment of small dishes to try a bunch of things. The beef tataki with ponzu was my favorite dish of the night. The curry rice was identical to what I've had in Tokyo. The udon was delicious with a mild but pleasant broth. The karaage was hot and crunchy with a little salt and was super satisfying. The staff were all kind and attentive and all spoke fluent Japanese so it was fun practising my language skills. Highly recommended restaurant. We'll undoubtedly be back.

It's a cozy, clean restaurant with a friendly staff and a great authentic menu. The cuisine brought back wonderful memories of the food I had eaten in Tokyo back in May. It was hot, delicious and I knew I was eating authentic good with every bite. I also tried the curry. It was distinctively Japanese in texture, flavour and presentation. It is not as spicey as Indian or Thai, and was a rich brown sauce. Came with nice fluffy rice. I totally an going to come back here.

I had to try it because I was told the food is the closest version of Japan. We dined during the evening of Tuesday January 29; our waiter was very polite and hospitable. He made sure to fill our drinks and cleared empty dishes promptly. Never once did we have to wave him down, unlike most Toronto restaurants. In terms of food, I think I have found my new go-to comfort food spot. I can’t recommend a favourite because it was all very delicious! For my next visit, I would love to try their infamous Motsu Nabe!!

Hidden gem. Low key atmosphere with a great Izakaya style menu and drink list. (House specialty is motsunabe. Min. order 2 people, limited quantities) Latest menu items include: basashi and grilled OR deep fried pork intestine (yum)
