The 15 best diners to try in Rotterdam

We recently dined at François Geurds, a 2-star Michelin restaurant, and left feeling underwhelmed. Unfortunately, the food, service, and atmosphere did not meet the high standards one would expect from a restaurant of this caliber. The Positives: The sommelier was excellent, recommending a delightful bottle of wine that paired well with our tasting menu. Among the dishes, the duck stood out as the only one deserving of 2 Michelin stars. The flavors were harmonious, with a perfect balance of crispiness and richness, though the sauce was slightly overpowering. The Negatives: • Biet Truffle: A decent dish with simple ingredients and a pleasant taste, though not particularly memorable. • Black Beauty: Overly oily, with unbalanced flavors that didn’t blend well. • Avocado/Banana/Beluga Caviar: A major disappointment. Cooking and blending caviar this way felt like an insult to such a premium ingredient. The cream tasted identical to the first dish, as if the sauce had been reused. • Tuna/Kombu: The sorbet was a surprising highlight, working well with the salty sauce. However, the tuna itself was not fresh, likely defrosted, which was quite disappointing. Atmosphere: The seating arrangement was awkward and uncomfortable. We were placed very close to the neighboring table, to the point where we could hear their entire conversation. This lack of privacy made the experience feel far from the refined and intimate setting one expects at a Michelin-starred restaurant. Service: The staff lacked the training and finesse expected at a 2-star Michelin establishment. Small details and attentiveness, which are critical at this level, were missing throughout the experience. We traveled to Rotterdam specifically to try this restaurant, and sadly, it fell short of expectations. While there were moments of brilliance, significant improvements are needed in the kitchen, service, and ambiance to truly live up to its Michelin status.

Honestly one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. The food was ok. The duck dish was barely edible and the only memorable good food was the beetroot sourdough bread. The service was absolutely horrible except for one kind waiter. It took over 4 hours to get all the food and we skipped a course in order to leave. We were not the only table trying to get out to leave early because the wait was excessive. It took over half an hour to get a drink. Terrible experience and makes me question how this place has any Michelin stars?

€1500 euros for 8 courses and wine with 3 people. Impressive ambiance and presentation, with a wide array of food carts, but the wines fell short and many dishes leaned too heavily on fruit, obscuring the delicate flavours they were meant to enhance. Moreover, the dinner lasted more than five hours, too long. The wine pairing was maybe the biggest disappointment: rushed explanations, poor matches, and nothing remarkable for the price. Sommelier was hard to follow at times, he noticed this and switched Flemish to English, which didn't help much. When we politely asked to change one of the reds, the response by a waiter was defensive — a more open attitude or effort to match our taste would have gone a long way. Attention to detail was lacking throughout: a dish toppled over on the plate and wasn’t replaced; my Opinel knife was poorly maintained, the Japanese knife dull, and the sourdough bread burned black on the bottom and unevenly cut. The tea tray looked nice but its lids were mismatched. Food was served while one of us was in the bathroom, and they never returned to explain the dish. Most staff were professional and courteous, though some were clearly still in training. For this price, you expect precision and a better pacing.

The worst Michelin dining experience we’ve ever had. We visited FG three years ago and had a completely different, positive impression back then. This time, however, it was an enormous disappointment. Having dined at Michelin restaurants all over the world, we expected a high level of quality and consistency, but instead encountered the opposite. The tasting menu of 8 courses stretched over 4.5 hours without coffee or mignardises to close the experience. The food itself was well below average for this level, with some dishes being extremely poor the leek plate, in particular, was simply unacceptable, while others were excessively salty. The service was polite but slow, uncoordinated, and clearly undertrained for this supposed level of fine dining. On top of that, the price was extremely high and completely unjustified for the quality delivered. A place that once left us with fond memories now feels like one of the worst disappointments in our fine dining experiences. I would not recommend it to anyone.

We asked for table allowing us to sit next to each other - they exceptionally changed the configuration for us and granted us our wish - that’s rare! Perfectly friendly staff, very relaxed atmosphere for a 2* Michelin restaurant - not the usual over politeness. Food obviously excellent.

Cutting your meat with your own chosen knife from the chef's collection. That's how it starts here :-). Really comfortable chairs giving a kind of privacy. Menu is served here. Where there is also a part for the waiting staff. Finishing plates, make your blend of pepper, getting bread out of the pan, there is some interaction. Food is really good, coffee was oke (expected this to be superb - seeing the effort they put into it). China was adding a lot - wel chosen and beautiful.

Summary: A great place for an elevated bar experience and celebrations. I wouldn't recommend it for an exquisite fine-dining experience. Chosen Menu: 2025 Spring Menu, 5 courses. Positive: I always appreciate extra (from the house) snacks/appetizers, as presented at the restaurant, like the baked bread and lentil snack. Favorite Dish: The dessert of goat yogurt and barberry on the bottom was surprisingly crunchy. Negative: Except for the dessert, the dishes were okay, but lacked the "wow" factor I look for in a fine-dining restaurant. I disliked that they charged for table water. I feel water should be free (especially table water). Issue: There was sand in the Jerusalem artichoke dish. We told the waiter, and they apologized and offered a free coffee, paired with three special snacks. Service and People: Friendly, good service. Restaurant Location and Vibe: The location is perfect; however, the décor and style are not to my taste. Too modern; I prefer something more classic.

I was here today, October 14th, on my birthday, and I was treated incredibly well! I was attended by a lovely girl who speaks Spanish (her mother is Spanish), which made communication so much easier. She was very kind and attentive. Everyone at the restaurant treated me with great respect and warmth — I truly felt welcomed. I’m Brazilian, and I really appreciate when people treat me nicely, because that’s exactly how we treat others back home. The food was delicious, the place is beautiful and cozy, and the service was absolutely perfect. I’ll definitely come back! 🌹

We had a loooovely dinner! We were extremely well followed by a very friendly and professional waiter who suggested perfectly wine and champagne to choose for each dish! The location lovely and the environment cozy without being snob! I adored it! Many options absolutely delicious and tasty also for vegetarian. We will come back for sure!

We enjoyed a really nice dinner in Putaine. We both had oysters, two cold and two warm dishes and desserts. The food was really good and the portions quite inventive. The wine list was well thought out, easy to read and versatile. The service and atmosphere were perfect, cozy but still classy. Taste was close to perfect, but when I compare it to some fine dining restaurants in Rotterdam, I think there was still a little last touch to be given towards perfection. But very close still. As a Rotterdam tour guide I was happily surprised by this all-vegan lunchroom in the city center. The food was pretty good, fairly priced and that staff was kind as well. Though, I am strongly against the trend where the menus are English only (so not in native Dutch). My nephews needed translation help, while they're in their home city. Which is ridiculous in my opinion..

Came here for breakfast but didn’t realise it was a vegan place. The options are good and the coffee is good. Service is friendly and prices are reasonable as well. The space is nicely decorated and quiet. A good spot to come to if you need a vegan place. There are a variety of options that can satisfy everyone’s preferences. Overall a good experience and would recommend.

Awesome place for vegan food my family was impressed! The staff was really friendly and helpful. Even though there was only one chef we were informed that service will be a bit slower so communication was present. Chef smashed it with the food, it was incredible and flavourful

I've been here a few times and they've mostly been pleasant experiences. The service is fine and relatively swift. The menu is diverse and caters to the fried, boiled, cooked, grilled and raw food eaters. The quality and freshness of the ingredients is good and the dishes are proportioned well and taste nice. The drinks are made well and as yet I've tried the hulk smoothie and some others and they've been on point. Prices are fine and I'll visit them again soon.

Super cozy place and great staff. Really nice and cozy for an evening. Can highly recommend it. Also they serve nougat with the tea which was super yummy. Staff is super attentive which is great. There is quite a lot of people but the atmosphere still stays amazing. Deffo a nice place and would come back

A nice place with varied selection of food and drinks. Seems like the restaurant is aiming high but the quality of the dishes we had did not meet our expectations. Hopefully we were just a bit unlucky with our experience. The presentation of the dishes we ordered was great initially, but unfortunately the combination of flavours and textures could be better composed, thus the three star rating. For example carrot garniture served in three versions, both mash, fried and steamed, but all tasting more or less the same. The melted parmesan on the ravioli dish was very salty, with what felt like a layer of lemon juice floating around the pasta. Could then hardly taste the mushroom filling of the ravioli, the sauce drowned the flavour of the pasta. It must be mentioned, though, that the pasta it self was perfectly al dente and seemed like good quality. The service was a bit slow and staff had a somewhat nonchalant approach. The restraurant is located in a lovely quiet area close to Rotterdam centraal, placed in an interjunction next to other restaurants and cafees, with outdoor seating. The area has a lovely vibe to it and seems to get busy for dinner, worth a visit!

Best food so far into the Netherlands, been here for 9 days and the service was amazing the food was great the location was easily accessible. Keep up the good work, special mention to our waiter who visited Cape Town, couldn't remember his name. He did well. Best service from him. Love it.

Great place to grab a drink and food near the Rotterdam station. Wide selection of beers and great food platters, good fries. The ambience is also really great. The outdoor seating is what I would recommend.

Have booked a table for two to meet with a friend of my. She lived in London and now moved to Amsterdam, so have been to many nice restaurants. So, we were nicely impressed by the great service, nice menu and quality of all the dishes we've ordered. Amazing choice of wines!! Pay attention to a cheese menu, goes accompanied by fig bread and jam. Highly recommended

I took a chance on the restaurant after having read the reviews. The food is excellent, no questions here. But the service is disappointingly deplorable. While the waitresses were very nice and understanding, the food was veeeery (excruciatingly) slow and the owners next to us were acting as if the restaurant was their playground; I’m guessing for an interview/social media. I personally regret having come all the way out of Zeeland just to witness this. But it’s alright. Food is decent but I wouldn’t go out of my way anymore for a joint like this.

Amazing oysters. The shrimp croquette was good but not amazing and definitely not worth the price. Personnel is very friendly, also the food and drinks come quickly. The atmosphere is really good, in general the furniture decorations etc all look very nice. Definitely a must visit especially on Sunday for the discounted oysters.

A former colleague of mine recommended this place, so we decided to try it out on a Friday. It was a really good time! Staff are very friendly, patient and knowledgeable. Quite a substantial part of the menu seems to change periodically. Which I think is really fun and definitely encourages me to return there. Food was quite good, we shared a tuna steak salad, a plate of duck and a plate of fish (forgot what it was, but it was one of the periodical dishes). Dessert was a lot! Really tasty, and not too sweet.

We had a dinner for 2 at Cafe Marseille, a place that's been on our list for a long time. The "specials" menu at the entrance is tempting, so we had the anchovies starter and halibut main from there. Anchovies were nice and the halibut was cooked well, still flaky and had a fresh sea aroma. Halibut comes with a pumpkin puree and hollandaise sauce, I also picked mashed potatoes on the side. I love it when restaurants serve a slice of lemon with fish, but in this case, it wasn't necessary. The halibut was well-seasoned and the hollandaise sauce had enough acidity to complement it. I'd highly recommend it if you see in their menu again. We also tried their bouillabaisse, the broth was fresh, and it was one of the better fish soups I've had here so far. You could tell the ingredients were fresh. For dessert, I went for the special of the day: tarte a babeurre. A French take on pastel de nata, as our waiter described it. I liked that it wasn't as sweet as that, and the plating of the dessert was my favorite of the night. I wish they had more options for wine by glass. While they did have some more interesting natural wines, I'd like to see more French varieties available on their menu. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere with plenty of French elements in the decor, but I guess there're too many tables inside, and it can get loud when it's packed full. Adding to that point, while we were happy with the service, keep in mind that it can take a while for the food to arrive, especially if it's a busy night. Overall, we enjoyed our dinner there, and we'll come back to try out the rest of their menu.

The food was amazing, brought me back to my holidays in France. The place is really cute and so French. The service was great, the waitress was really lovely and helpful. The only thing is I find it a bit overpriced, the food is amazing but some items like the pulpo is a bit overpriced in my opinion. But it’s a great dinner place for special occasions.

Fantastic little restaurant serving traditional bistro style french food. It serves classics the way they're supposed to be done. We started out with some 'oefs mayonaise' and 'rilletes de canard', all home made. As mains we had bouilabaisse, 'steak frites' - of course with a real sauce bearnaise - , and skrei accompanied by grilled green asparagus with white bean and lemon creme fraiche. Everything was done simple and delicious. To round up the evening we tried the 'tarte aux citron' which was great! The whole ambiance breathes 'France' up to and including the French cinema classic 'La Piscine' playing in the background. Very happy with this experience!

I thoroughly enjoyed the traditional ambiance of this establishment. Their extensive beer menu thoughtfully included a glossary of terms, which was very helpful. I was delighted to find Tripple Karmeliet on the menu and, despite the early hour, ordered a bottle. Wishing to sample some traditional Dutch cuisine, I selected the Bitterballen. These were served with a mild mustard dipping sauce and were truly delicious. I shall certainly order them again. The serving contained nine, though I only managed half, so I took the remainder with me. I can confirm that they remain quite palatable even when cold.

This was my fourth time visiting. I had come three times just for drinks, and this time I tried the unlimited mussel dishes. Unfortunately, the first waiter didn’t explain the details about the food and drinks clearly. We didn’t know that only tap beer was included with the meal, so we were later charged extra for our drinks. Also, the side dish can be chosen between bread and fries, but we weren’t given the option and were simply served fries. Despite these issues, I still enjoyed my time there. I noticed many of the staff working hard, though a few seemed tired and less friendly. I hope the service can be a bit better next time.

A great and cozy place to enjoy some good food and drinks together with some friends, family or by yourself. I was here on a Monday afternoon around 5.45PM, it was not busy and there were a lot of tables to choose from. The personnel is welcoming, friendly and proactive. I had the Grilled Diamond Bavette, with roasted vegetables, bearnaise sauce and chimichurri. It was tasty, although I did add some salt because it was a little bit under seasoned for my taste. The fries were nice and crispy and added the little bit of salt, which was definitely needed to provide some balance to the dish.

The lunch was nothing special and the coffee not really good. We have ordered a croque madame and the croissants as well Americano and cappuccino. The service was completely disorganised. They came to our table two times with a wrong order. An avocado sandwich instead of the croissants and a croque Madame which was actually sth like ham and kaas tosti without bechamel sauce in brown Bread and not in white as I requested. I expected the staff to be more careful and attentive when they take and bring orders. The coffee nothing special. I am not coming here again for breakfast or lunch.

One of our favourite Bars in Rotterdam. We love this cozy and charming atmosphere like in an old Pub 😊. Very good selection of fresh draught beers 🍻. Nice spot to stop & have a coffee, beer and to try some Bitterballen! They offer decent brunch/lunch menu and there is plenty of seating both outside & in. This is a great location between the train station and city centre, perfect stop-off is you are exploring the city.

What an amazing bar! The view is just stunning, and it feels so lively with so many people around. Honestly, it’s like being in Barcelona, Spain — but you’re actually right here in the Netherlands. I also loved that they had a mojito option without alcohol, which was a great option!

Came to rotterdam as a tourist and found out about this. I was told their hamburger was the best on the menu. And i tell you it has to be one of the best restaurants i have ever visited. The staff were really nice, you get a nice view of the dock and service was great. Would advise to come here if coming as a tourist. If you want a mouth watering burger, get the hamburger, a thing of beauty.

Kade 4 in Rotterdam offers a cozy spot by the Oude Haven with a lovely waterside terrace, friendly staff, and tasty food—service can be a bit slow when it’s busy.

There is nothing better to do on a sunny summer's day when you get off work around 5 and there's still about 5 hours worth of sun. You're off for a feed with your colleague and your throat is conveniently thirsty. Something that a nice glass of homebrew beer would fix. De Gele Kanarie checks all these boxes, with surprisingly good bar food, predictably good beer and just a chill atmosphere. There's also a bunch of whacky decor of humans with yellow canary heads, which I think is the Dutch name of the joint. I think if you drink enough beer in here you might end up with a yellow canary head yourself. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing who knows.

We had a great experience at the Gele Kanarie. The place is nice, we sat outside because the weather was really fine. The service was great and friendly staff. The beers made by them were really good and I think the price was reasonable. The food was more for ok, I think the French Fries missed a little bit of sauce/salt. No sure if it is possible to pay a visit to the place they brew their beers.

MY HONEST review: - Nice atmosphere and good looking people - Service is quite fast - Warm inside - Portions were nice, although I expected a bit more of the nachos (the guacamole did not have that much of a taste), they were decent. - Very nice location, even though in Rotterdam city, you can easily park on the street

A nice restaurant especially for the upscale and intimate atmosphere, but you certainly pay a premium for it. The food and drink were good, but not amazing and priced well above what they would normally be in any other restaurant.

A nice place to sit down for a drink, however the food (starters) is not that good especially for the price. The Passionfruit Mojito was a great cocktail. It was refreshing, well made and not too strong. The Pornstar Martini was also done as it should be. So the cocktails are worth it, even if they are on the pricier side ~€16. The food was not that good though. We ordered the Yakitori, and we thought that it was a bit off and asked for it to be changed. The staff complied with no questions asked. We then ate the Crispy Chicken which you couldn't really taste because of its sauce. The sauce is very numbing, so you can't really get the flavor of the starter because your taste buds are kind of numbed. We also had the Boneless Iberico Ribs, which was perfectly cooked. It was tender and juicy. However, it was smothered in sauce so the flavor is again of the sauce. It is a tasty sauce but there is too much of it and it is strong. The service is really good though. We were greeted and seated by the hostess quite quickly. The staff was friendly and explained the sharing menu they have. The fact that they didn't make a fuss and changed our dish when we asked was also commendable. 04.2025

Definitely one of my fav restaurants, they have quality sushi, their seafood starters are finger licking good! From oysters, to caviar and my fave the gratinated scallops 😍 and they serve veuve rich and amarone by the glass which is very seldom in Rotterdam. I will definitely come back to check out their new menu.

I’m shocked at how rude your entrance staff was during our visit on Friday, May 30th at 22:16. The lady at the door told us the inside was full no problem. But when I politely asked to see the interior, she bluntly said “No, not allowed.” When I asked about using the restroom, she said she’d escort me but repeated that I wasn’t allowed inside otherwise. Her tone was cold, dismissive, and completely unprofessional. We felt unwelcome and left immediately. If this is how you treat potential customers, your staff seriously need retraining. An insulting and disappointing experience.

Great historical spot in Rotterdam. My grandparents and their kids set foot on Dutch soil in this area of Rotterdam's port in 1951. Pictures of all those ships that departed to and arrived from far away places are on the walls inside the pub. It was a warm day when we visited this place, so we only went inside to check out the pics. Then we looked for a table outside to enjoy our food and drinks. We ordered the spareribs from their daily specials menu. The meals came rather swiftly and were of good sizing. Sorry, no pics of the spareribs, too hungry 😄😄 The ribs were prepared well, with the meat falling off the bone as it should. The bill was reasonable as well and the service was professional and with a smile. Hope to return here again soon!

Nice location with great vibe and a bit slow service. We had blue cheese fondue which was served with bread, vegetables and salad. Salad was really bad with lots of onions, marinated garlic and dressing. Two espresso martini cocktails were OK, but definitely very sweet. Recommended if you want to sit next to the cubic houses and to the channel.

Really nice experience at this steakhouse. The concept of cooking your own steak on a hot granite stone is fun, interactive, and makes the meal feel unique. The quality of the meat was good but not great, and the fondue was tasty and well prepared. Service was friendly, but a bit on the slower side and the team seemed not very experienced, which held things back slightly. That said, they were kind and attentive once available. Overall, a great place to go if you enjoy a hands-on dining experience and quality food. Worth trying for the steak on the stone!

Horrible! Rude waitresses, scrolling through social media, rather than attending to you, dirty, trash everywhere, pigeons on tables and when I asked what's happening here, they replied rudely that it's nature. Cigar butts, wraps from sugar and cookies and more... veeery nature indeed, silly me. The cups were all chipped. Profiteroles have nothing to do with the desert, I even suspect it was expired judging by the aspect and taste, I asked to see the validity and the waitress took her time to find an empty box with a validity ok... I do not recommend, their current score is honestly too good. When our server asked if I wanted sides, I clarified that the beef cheek dish came with rice and veggies, and she confirmed it did. So, I opted out of additional sides. The appetizers arrived promptly and were excellent, as was my husband’s Paloma. However, things went downhill quickly. We waited a full hour for our mains, during which we grew increasingly frustrated. At one point, we asked our server for an update around the 50 minute mark, but she never returned with an answer. Instead, I saw her chatting with coworkers and setting tables while we sat there, hungry and starting to feel disappointed with the service. Finally, another server brought out our mains just as we were about to leave as we said we would ask for our bill at the one hour mark which is when the food arrived. Easy to find. Great food. Great staff. I LOVED this place. It was clean and tidy, not to much noise and not to many people which is nice. They had some very nice vegan options. Oh and you have to try their milkshakes not only do they do vegan but they taste so nice.

Good and not so expensive place to have simple standard American burgers. If there are a lot of people and crowded it might be tricky to have attention from the staff. There was bad ventilation when we were there so after spending an hour there for lunch we were all smelling fat deep in our clothes.

Service was a little on the slow side at times, but the food and drinks were well worth the wait. The peanut soup is a must-try and the portions of the shared platter will leave you rolling out fat and happy. 10/10 will be coming back again :)
