Hiking Trails
Diamond Head State Monument is a tuff cone crater formed 300,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption. The ridgeline offers stunning panoramic views and is home to one of O'ahu's most scenic hiking trails. The 0.8-mile hike to the summit is steep but rewards hikers with surreal views of Waikiki Beach and the Pacific Ocean. It's an iconic landmark in Hawaii's military history and a popular spot for visitors, offering an epic adventure for families.
Really beautiful place for a rather quick hike. The summit is GORGEOUS and you can see so much of the island from up there. I did see two people being air-lifted out and many many more struggling (people I passed on the way up still had not made it near the top when I was heading back down). So please be mindful and aware and ask yourself are you fit enough to do this hike. Watch a YouTube video before you come. This happens far too often and it's really sheer negligence on the tourists part. I saw people with dress shoes and nice outfits. This is not the time nor place to look cute. Come prepared. I wore hiking boots but you'd be fine with sneakers. Bring sunscreen and water. They do have a food truck onsite with snacks. This is also a nice moped ride from Waikiki. Keep in mind you MUST make reservations and pay online for entry. You may not pay once you enter the park. You will have a reserved time slot that you can enter and they will tell you when you must be out of the park.

Great run of you start at Waikiki Beach, about 8 miles round trip. Running the last part of Diamond Peak is challenging, going up the steps. You’ll have to walk portions of the trail to the peak as there are lots of people in line hiking it, but you’ll get a chance to pass and keep running. Amazing views around the island from the top!
Harry R — Google review
It was not an easy hike, but the views at the end are amazing! Make a reservation online FOR SURE and pay for your entrance and parking ahead. Last time, we didn't do this and we're turned away. The guy at the gate said we could only stay for the 2 allotted hours, but the only way I would get out on time was by helicopter/flight for life. Nobody was checking anyway. Bring plenty of water and a hat. Make sure you have really good shoes, because the trail is steep and uneven in many spots. Sooo many stairs! When you get through the tunnel, go to the left. Less stairs, better views. Everything hurts, but worth it!
Vanessa M — Google review
i’m not a hiker but i do travel around the world a lot and walk a lot and had to hike a few times but man going up was strenuous. maybe had to be because i was dehydrated and didn’t eat anything for breakfast. i had to take quite a few breaks because i was feeling nauseous. i’m glad i did it because it forced me to keep going and that’s what life is about. to keep going and pushing thru the hard things. the view at the top was amazing and worth it. the walk back down is 100x easier. bring water and try not to go mid day or the sun will be beating on u the whole time. i took a bus here from waikiki and it drops you off at the bottom. you have to walk up and thru the tunnel to reach the ticket booth. buy your tickets online early because slots do tend to sell out. it was 6.15 after fees online.
Abu — Google review
A spectacular place to hike at sunrise (make reservations early), the hike is short but steep, be prepared in your fitness level with water and electrolytes. And be prepared for crowds, but folks are good about sharing the trail. I caught a taxi up to the entrance, but walked back to the beach after, about 3 miles downhill from the summit.
Katie H — Google review
Wow! It's a hike to get to the top, but achievable. Just be ready for narrow pathways and a somewhat claustrophobic tunnel, but relax its just a short distance and adds character to the hike. Once up you can see all around and even go into the military pill box located ocean-side top. Just take your time and go at your pace and you'll be up before you know it. 🤙
Jonathon R — Google review
Diamond Head is an absolute must-do hike when visiting Hawaii! The trail itself is relatively short in distance, but don’t be fooled—it does get steep and challenging in sections, especially near the end where stairs and narrow pathways lead you up to the summit. The effort, however, is more than worth it. Once you reach the top, you’re rewarded with some of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Waikiki, Honolulu, and the endless blue Pacific Ocean. On a clear day, you can see for miles in every direction, making it the perfect spot for photos and simply soaking in the beauty of the island. I recommend going early in the morning, not only to avoid the midday heat but also to beat the crowds, since this is one of Oahu’s most popular attractions. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and take your time—the trail is well-maintained but can be uneven in spots. The hike is doable for most fitness levels, and the sense of accomplishment at the summit is incredible. Diamond Head perfectly combines a bit of exercise, history, and world-class scenery, making it a highlight of any trip to Hawaii.
Thomas G — Google review
The total walk is just under 2 miles and the trail is generally well maintained. As you get close to the top you need to be able to climb quite a few stairs. It is recommended to you go early in the morning. The views from the top are great.

Hanauma Bay is a popular nature preserve and marine life conservation district on Oahu. It offers a beautiful beach, opportunities to see green sea turtles and parrotfish, and excellent snorkeling. To avoid crowds and enjoy clear waters, consider arriving before 7am when entry may be free. The bay was previously harmed by human development but has been restored under new conservation procedures.
Beautiful beach with plenty of reef. Got snorkeling gear and was able to see so many varieties of fish even on a very windy day. Felt like we had a better snorkeling experience on left side of the beach. There’s a store where you can rent all the snorkeling equipment you need. Reservations highly recommended.
Akash Y — Google review
Beautiful nature preservation on Oahu. Amazing location for snorkeling! Extremely busy so you have book your registration spots online 2 days in advance or visit in person before 7am the day of just to have a chance at getting in! The earlier you get in, the longer you can stay as they close at 3pm. A must visit if you can get in!
Philip C — Google review
This was my first time snorkeling! Perfect place for it! You can rent or bring your own. There is so much to see undewater! The fish are unbelievable and not at all scared of you, but you have to be careful of where you step. Also, if you're coming to Hawaii for a short time & want yo bisit Maunalua Bay, make sure you visit the website at least 48 hours prior to book a reservation because it goes fast!! However it's absolutely worth seeing and the beach is gorgeous!!
Marta S — Google review
Pay USD25 for tickets to get in. We went with a 'tour' for around USD50 per pax, which included hotel pickup and snorkeling equipment included, and I also added USD10 for a life vest. We arrived the earliest at 6.45 am when the park opens, but the waters were sadly too cold and we decided to enjoy by relaxing on the beach instead. The tour ends at 11:00 More visitors came at around 10:30 when the sun was stronger and a little bit more pleasant. Recommend to come on your own (totally doable) and especially if your hotel already provides snorkelling gear and beach hotels etc for free (as ours did), so you can pick the best time and leave as you wish.
WM — Google review
Good and safe place for snorkeling. Reservations are in place, book early and on time. There is parking fee as well. Saw beautiful fishes but not much as in Shark’s cove. There is a shop to rent out snorkel gears, price ranges from 10-20$. The depth increases as you go away from the beach so it is not random.
Shashank P — Google review
The view was breathtaking. Disappointed by the amount of fish we see while snorkeling, the best place to snorkel is in Sharks Cove. You have to book to get in at 7am 2 days ahead, parking is a bit of a nightmare. The clear water makes up for it. We went in the afternoon just hours before the beach closes and it was very crowded. We managed to take a few pictures of the water without people in it and it’s just heaven on earth.
Portia K — Google review
Bought tickets to snorkel here and had a blast. They brief you on what you can and can't do before you head down so just follow the rules. You can rent gear and equipment if you want. I would highly suggest getting snorkeling gear there is so much to see in the coral reef.
Michael — Google review
We booked an early spot which I recommend as you can get parking and it’s not too hot - there is limited shade at the beach This was a great snorkeling experience - we were in the water over an hour and were able to rinse off with the showers before leaving Could have better snack options - perhaps close to the beach

Ala Moana Regional Park is a 100-acre park featuring a man-made beach with calm surf, tennis courts, and a pavilion. Situated across from the Ala Moana Shopping Center, it offers an alternative to Waikiki Beach with its grassy areas, shady tree zones, and white sandy beaches. The shallow water area is protected by a reef barrier and provides opportunities for snorkeling along the submerged rocks. The park is easily accessible in Honolulu with ample parking and good amenities.
The sunsets here are gorgeous. There are always beautiful people in the park doing some beautiful things like “bubbly therapy” or “dancing as the sun sets”. It’s a great place to run and place for kids. Locals are always around and it makes it an integrative experience. I did Tai Chai one morning. The view of Diamond Head is sweet and the hotel strip. It’s a pretty chill beach and wonderful place to just hang and have some fun in the sun or after sunset.
Darron J — Google review
Our main purpose when we came here was to watch the Friday fireworks. This park is big and has nice views of the city. It’s also a great place to relax, hang out, read a book and walking or jogging It’s a great place for kids to play in the playground or run around. It’s has plenty of parking too and it’s also free but keep in mind that it gets busy during special events like the fireworks. Best to get there early. I recommend bringing picnic blankets and chair if you’re going to hang out for a bit. We were there a couple of hours before the fireworks mainly to get a good spot and get a good view. We brought some food and enjoyed an early dinner. Overall a nice park however just be aware of your surroundings as we’ve seen people with carts and tents on the other side. The public washroom wasn’t as great either, not well maintained but I guess it’s just like any other public park.
Ivee M — Google review
Ala Moana Beach Park is a pretty big and convenient spot right in the heart of Honolulu. One of the best things about it is the location — it’s directly across the street from Ala Moana Center, so it’s super easy to grab something to eat, do a little shopping, and then head over to the beach to relax. I really enjoy picking up takeout from the mall and eating by the water while watching the sunset. The views are beautiful, and the water is calm and nice for swimming or just floating around. However, the beach itself isn’t perfect. The sand is a bit rough and not as soft as some of the other beaches on the island, and there are quite a few rocks when you go into the water, so you might want to wear water shoes. The park area is large and has plenty of space to walk, jog, or picnic, but it’s also known for having quite a few homeless people around. Most keep to themselves, but it can make the area feel a little uncomfortable, especially if you’re by yourself. I definitely wouldn’t recommend coming here alone at night. Overall, Ala Moana Beach Park is great for its convenience, accessibility, and sunset views, but it’s not the most peaceful or pristine beach on Oahu. Perfect for a quick dip or a lunch break by the water, but not necessarily a place I’d spend the whole day
Life R — Google review
Its a beautiful and large park with public access to the beach tough. There are enough slots to park , many people walking, surfing or just sharing a barbeque on the large extension of grass with many big trees shadowing. I was in the second week of June and the only "but" was the incredible amount of flies around.
ALFRED C — Google review
I feel like this is a hidden gem in Oahu. The view is so beautiful here and the park was mostly empty when we went. We didn't go far into the park so we can't attest to the quality of the beach. But the grassy area was gorgeous enough.
LY T — Google review
Memorial Day, Shinnyo-En lantern floating Hawaii 2025. I just wanted to give you all a couple of tips, hope it helps. *There is a separate line for military members which is MUCH shorter. *Bring a beach chair or towel to sit on while you wait for your lantern. *Bring an umbrella or hat for sun protection, sun block, and water. * There is parking at Ala Moana center. * Bring a lighter, the grill ones work best to light the lantern. We pick up our lantern, take it home to write our messages and then come back for the ceremony. Some people prefer to stay all day and enjoy the beach park 🏖🌴
Angelica J — Google review
One of my favorite places to be on the island. It is such a beautiful and lively park, great for taking pictures, walking, picknicking, sports,,, everything. You can even catch a beautiful sunset or sunrise. It is next to ala Moana so you can grab a treat or go shopping as well. Me and my husband recently even carved pumpkins there lol. You can do anything.

Park
Kapiʻolani Regional Park is a historic public park in Hawaii, gifted by King Kalakaua to his people in 1877. Named after the queen, it covers over 100 acres and offers stunning oceanfront views with a backdrop of volcanic scenery. The park is a popular spot for various activities such as jogging, picnicking, soccer, and tennis. Visitors can also enjoy the beach, volleyball courts, and canoeing opportunities.
What a gorgeous and well kept park. This park is massive and seems to go on forever. I'm amazed at the number of unique trees and flowers. The views of Diamond Head are awesome. Pickle ball courts, volleyball courts and a huge field for any number of sports.
Dodd B — Google review
Gigantic park. Close to the beach and perfect for jogging around. It’s got a nice paved walking/jogging path that loops around the park. Plenty of picnic benches, soccer field, shaded trees, and bathrooms.
Rhodes F — Google review
This is a huge, lovely park with great view of the Diamond Head Crater. It's so green and tranquil. Lots of different birds here too. We saw a lot of people having picnics here.

Beautiful park, very clean. Lots of homeless but not one person bothered me at all. Sat and enjoyed the sea for a few hours, very pleasant.

Beautiful green open space. Ample parking during the week when there are no major events going on. A bit crowded on the holidays and weekends. Adequate bathrooms reasonably spaced apart. Easy to swim.

May 2025 Beach access is fine but the park sometimes shelters a number of homeless people and the smell of Marijuana can be noticeable even from afar

My Favorite Waikiki Beach park in Hawaii, it's huge and never not enough room to do anything and everything from running your dog to having a picnic to throwing a huge birthday barbecue to playing baseball football soccer volleyball and surfing just a walk away and any other sport you can think of, there is even multiple tennis courts and yes enough bathrooms all around, and WOW!!! One of the best places to watch the sunset and sunrise
Johnn-Johnn P — Google review
My favorite park around the beach. Kapi olani park is really big with green vegetation around it. There also a car park in front for free. The view is amazing and you can see the mountain and beach from a far. Family picnic is well encouraged and there are chairs. The trees are umbrella shaped, green, tall and provide shade when the sun is hot. Also, this park is clean and well maintained. There is a restroom at the corner

Diamond Head is an iconic volcanic peak in Oahu, offering hiking trails and historical military fortifications. Visitors can enjoy dinner cruises near the crater, witnessing breathtaking sunsets over the Pacific Ocean. During winter, passengers may also spot humpback whales on their annual migration. Oahu's lush landscapes and crystal-clear waters make it a cherished destination for travelers seeking unforgettable experiences.
Very easy hike but great views when you get to the top. It has 360-views of the beaches, the city and the ocean itself. It can get crowded up there so you will have to wait for your turn to take photos. I would suggest going for an early session and try to catch the sunrise there!!
Masoud A — Google review
Did this with our 4 year old and found it to be a relatively easy hike. We went through a lot of the tracks so it felt worthwhile. It is easy to get to but I would not say the views are the best, the Makapuʻu Lighthouse trail had better outlooks, but it is still definitely worth doing. Just make sure you book early as reservations are required.
Allen S — Google review
We rolled up for the hike around 7:30 AM on a Saturday, and that was definitely the magic hour because parking was a breeze—tons of spots still open right in the crater. The hike itself is a great morning workout. It’s slightly strenuous but totally manageable. You definitely feel the incline and those famous stairs toward the end are a bit of a quad-burner, but just take your time. Once you get through the tunnel and scramble up to the lookout, the effort is instantly worth it. The payoff at the top is just insane. The panoramic view of Waikiki, the deep blue ocean, and the whole coastline is absolutely breathtaking. It’s the perfect reward for the climb. We were coming back down right as the crowds were really starting to pour in, so seriously, lock in that early-morning slot. It's the best way to start your day on O'ahu!
Pavan A — Google review
A moderate but rewarding hike! Make sure to bring plenty of water 💧. The hike takes about 1.5–2.5 hours, and don’t forget—you need to reserve online. The view from the top is absolutely breathtaking, totally worth the effort! 🌄⛰️

Hiked the Diamond Head Summit Trail — 1.6 miles roundtrip, 560-ft climb, and amazing views of Waikiki, Honolulu & the ocean! Trail’s paved with stairs, so wear good shoes. Go early, bring water & sunscreen. Entry $5/person or $10/vehicle. Totally worth it!
Pragya G — Google review
What an amazing place to go. Get your reservations early and go early in the morning because it does warm up and it will take you a while to walk it if you choose to walk the whole way to the top. It’s amazing part of history and if you’re there have encouraged you to take the time and go.
Dave W — Google review
Diamond Head, known as Lēʻahi in Hawaiian, is one of Oʻahu’s most iconic landmarks and a must-visit for travelers seeking both history and breathtaking views. This volcanic tuff cone, formed over 300,000 years ago, offers a moderately challenging hike that rewards visitors with a sweeping panorama of Honolulu, Waikīkī Beach, and the deep blue Pacific Ocean. The trail is well-maintained but includes steep staircases and a few narrow tunnels, so comfortable shoes and water are essential. Along the way, interpretive signs share the crater’s geological and military history, adding depth to the experience. Photographers will find endless opportunities, from capturing the unique crater walls to sunrise or sunset vistas from the summit. Whether for the exercise, the scenery, or the sense of standing atop one of Hawaii’s most famous natural wonders, Diamond Head is an unforgettable highlight of any trip to Oʻahu. --- To get on top of Diamond Head: Start at the Diamond Head State Monument Entrance Located in Honolulu, about a 10-minute drive from Waikiki. Parking is available for a small fee, but spaces can fill up quickly, so arrive early in the morning. You can also walk or take TheBus from Waikiki if you don’t have a car. Pay the Entrance Fee There’s a modest entrance fee for hikers (separate from vehicle parking). Payment kiosks accept credit cards. Begin the Hike The trail is about 1.3 km (0.8 miles) one way, with a 171 m (560 ft) elevation gain. Expect an uneven dirt path, stairs, and narrow tunnels. Follow the Switchbacks The hike starts gently but becomes steeper as you climb. There are several switchbacks that help manage the elevation gain. Navigate the Stairs and Tunnel Near the top, you’ll face a steep staircase, a 70 m (230 ft) dimly lit tunnel, and another spiral staircase. Reach the Summit Lookout At the top, you’ll find a restored military bunker and panoramic views of Waikiki, the Pacific Ocean, and the island’s coastline. Bring water, sun protection, and a camera — there’s little shade. Descent Go back the way you came, watching your step on the steep sections.
Paul P — Google review
So, a hike, lots of steps, and a rewarding view. Along the way, you will see the spots the military set up for defense, and the lookouts. It's always great to go there and do the hike. However, understand that people are ridiculous, and in today's world, everyone is doing a "photo shoot". Super frustrating as people have no self awareness. Aside from that, the trails are narrow, the tunnel is dark (lit lightly), and it gets hot in the summer. Still an amazing place to see Waikiki. Check it out, and enjoy!!!! Oh yeah, wear appropriate shoes!!! 🤦

Ulupō Heiau State Historic Site is a fascinating and culturally significant place in Hawai'i. Despite being somewhat hidden behind a YMCA with minimal signage, it offers a beautiful view and a nice trail through marshland. Visitors can learn about Hawaiian history, mythology, and the Kailua community while respecting the site's cultural importance. Recent efforts have enhanced its beauty, making it an even more captivating destination for those interested in ancient Hawaiian heritage and culture.
Make sure to take the path to the back of the structure down by the taro fields. What an incredible site...magical. Happy to read about the legendary Menehune. If you enjoy ancient archeology, this site is not to be missed. Park at the YMCA parking lot. Only takes about 20-30 min total visit. Free.

I recommend if you’re in Kailua area stop by here and learn about the Hawaiian history sacred place, clean and they’ll give you a tour and answer any questions you have about the historical place what how it came about. I discovered this place while chaperoning my sons class in a field trip , I believe you have to contact them on how to go about filling up a form before entrance .
Lanu M — Google review
National cultural and historical site. Small, there is not much walking, just one hill. It's impressive to imagine what was once there. Sad it is so destroyed. There is a plaque, but read about it before you go.
Snowyte N — Google review
What an interesting place. It's so beautiful and peaceful. It's a little confusing to get there, but once you're there, make sure to take the path around to the right and go down and take it all in from the side and bottom. I was told that they have been doing a lot of clean-up and making it even more beautiful place.
Jeff P — Google review
This one is kind of weird. It's very cool and feels like it should be a bigger attraction, but the parking and site are hidden behind a YMCA with no signage. I don't know if that's intentional to keep tourist traffic down, but a huge site like this with some pretty interesting history should be a little more popular. Beautiful view with a nice trail running through some marsh land.
Alejandro P — Google review
Sacred to the Hawaiians. Not an easy place to access. You either have to park somewhere in the main road and walk down the trail or park at the YMCA. The site is within a residential community.
Town T — Google review
Very cool to see this bit of ancient Hawaiian heritage and culture. If arriving here via the Shaka app, be aware that you can’t drive in like the app suggests. You’ll need to park at the YMCA but it’s a very short walk.
Michael T — Google review
Came across this cool Hawaiian temple ruin through the Shaka Guy app. I learned something new and the ruins were cool. Not easy to find, walk the road next to the YMCA. It's a quick stop.

Nature & Parks
Waʻahila Ridge State Recreation Area is a forested park offering hiking trails, picnic tables, and stunning views of nearby valleys. It's located near Wahiawa Reservoir, providing opportunities for fishing with a boat ramp available. The area boasts beautiful ridge trail views and a unique pine forest on Oahu. Accessible by TheBus, the entrance is just a short walk away. Visitors can enjoy mountain biking and safe meetups for hikers while families can utilize the picnic areas.
Pretty hard hike but soooo worth it!! There are several flat spots to rest with breathtaking views. There are several sketchy cliffs too so be careful.
Andy B — Google review
The level of calm and serenity experienced here is beyond measure. Everyone needs a forest bath from time to time, and -- despite the winding uphill road to get there -- the forest is immediately accessible the moment you park. It's dog-friendly, and you don't have to go very far to get deep into the trees and access some lovely panoramic views of Diamond Head and the ocean.
Nikki D — Google review
Wa'ahila Ridge State Recreation Area offers stunning panoramic views of Honolulu and the surrounding landscape, making it a hidden gem for outdoor enthusiasts. The area is known for its scenic hiking trails that cater to various skill levels. One of its standout features is that it is free to access, which adds to its appeal for both locals and visitors. The well-maintained trails, combined with the cost-free entry, make Wa'ahila Ridge a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the natural beauty of Hawaii without breaking the bank.
Virtuous S — Google review
This is the ridge between palolo and manoa. Once you get higher, the south shore and airport is comes in view along with diamond head and kokohead. You can stop and turn around at any point, but if you keep hiking, top very top offers great views of the east side of oahu as well. The terrain is rough but not very dangerous. This is not a walk in the park, so better shoes are recommended and I do suggest lots of water.
洋シェーン — Google review
Definitely a challenging hike but worth it. There are several peaks that allow for great views along the way. Trail gets pretty narrow in certain places and some light bouldering is required. Don't recommend for dogs or kids. Make sure to bring lots of water, takes about 4-5 hours.
Sean Y — Google review
This park was so peaceful and scenic! Probably my favorite place on the island when we visited. We loved the disc golf course!
Allison S — Google review
It is a beautiful hiking area but I would say depends how far you want to go up. The base area has a parking lot and picnic tables, very family friendly. But once you start the hike I’d say it is more for advanced hikers. Mainly because it cab be muddy and there are even parts where you use a rope to climb a slippery area. Definitely recommend just depends on what kind hike you are searching for
Andy A — Google review
This state park has a beautiful scenic view and a great place to have a picnic or to camp. It also has a trail that has a bit of everything from hiking through Pine trees to strawberry guava trees, climbing over rocks, dry and muddy paths, etc. Depending on your pace the hike could take up to 5-6 hours round trip. The terrains were a bit challenging and really muddy in certain areas as to be expected with the altitude. The hike to the top is definitely a journey where you'll see all kinds of trees, plants/flowers (some of which are almost completely covered in moss or fungus), and of course scenic views. When you get closer to the top, the path tends to be more windy with passing showers, so be mindful of that and plan ahead. With various terrains and scenery going once is not enough because it's breath taking. Also if you are hiking at the time of year where you see red fruit on the trees, those are waiawi or strawberry guava, in other words edible. I do recommend bring plenty of water as it is a bit of a workout. It tends to be muddy second half of the trail and even muddier if it rained the day of or day before. It could also gets pretty windy towards the second half depending on the day. A good pair of hiking boots/shoes is highly recommended, along with gloves, and spikes.

Magic Island Beach, also known as Ala Moana Beach Park, is a picturesque crescent-shaped beach nestled between downtown Honolulu and Waikiki. The beach is shielded from strong waves by a rock barrier, creating a tranquil swimming environment. While the sand may not be as smooth as neighboring beaches, it offers a peaceful retreat from the bustling Waikiki area.
Great place for an afternoon walk or jog, or to view the sunset without the Waikiki crowds. Lots of free parking, restrooms, showers and trees for a picnic or BBQ. Lots of locals here enjoying the 3 day holiday👍 Located on the far end of Ala Moana Beach park, there is a nice paved concrete path that takes you around the island with a lot of places for you to stop and enjoy the views. 5 stars🤙

This is a beautiful park with plenty of areas of shade. We saw people taking part in scuba school, surfing school, parasailing, surfing, and more. This park also offers amazing views of Honolulu and Waikiki.

This park is a treasured jewel of Honolulu. Many local people enjoy their time with sunshine, wave, ocean, grass, friends and their pets. Their daily life, talking with friends and jogging walking thinking at the bench, it seemed beautiful. Perhaps it felt even more so because it was in the glamorous city Honolulu. I can felt their own time of this city in this park. It also meaningful time for me.

such a beautiful area. first of all you can see diamond head which is so incredibly gorgeous. i’m from the midwest so seeing mountains and volcanoes is so insane. also the water here is so soothing. i love hearing the waves. i also seen crabs which i don’t see often. i saw people surfing for the first time ever in my life. the place is way too jaw dropping. and the sunsets here are one of the best i’ve ever seen

Spur of the moment, quick picnic on a week night, and it wasn't crowded at all. Enjoyed the fresh air, sights, food, and, of course, bonding with the family. We saw some ladies having a BBQ night close to the water, a good idea for the next visit. The picnic area is clean and well maintained. There are trash bins everywhere. It's a place where locals meet tourists. There's something for everyone here - swimming, picnic, work at the beach, run, walk your dog, wedding photography, and so much more. It's also across the street from Ala Moana Center for some dining and shopping spree. Pack your blanket, picnic chairs, food, and relax. I will definitely miss this when I leave the island.

Kailua Beach Park is a beloved destination known for its clear waters, fine sand, and excellent facilities. The beach offers a wide arc of powdery sand alongside jewel-colored waters, making it perfect for leisurely walks and family outings. It's a hotspot for aquatic activities such as kitesurfing, windsurfing, swimming, and kayaking. The calm waters are ideal for various water sports year-round.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely stunning beach! Soft white sand, clear turquoise water, and breathtaking mountain views. Perfect for swimming, walking, or just relaxing under the sun. Family-friendly with calm waves and plenty of space. One of the best beaches in Hawaii!
Kim H — Google review
We visited Kailua Beach Park on a Wednesday afternoon. Even though it wasn’t a weekend or holiday, both parking lots were completely full. After driving around for a bit, we luckily found a spot near Buzz’s Original Steak House across the street. Parking here is definitely more challenging than some reviews suggest. The beach itself is gorgeous — super soft white sand and clear blue water. We even spotted a sea turtle! Honestly, while it’s beautiful, it didn’t completely blow me away compared to some other beaches in Oahu. The shallow bay and protection of Popoia Island provide calm waters, great if you have small children not used to the surfing waves of most beaches. Watching people kayaking and sailing turned out to be part of the fun. With the picnic grounds, public restrooms and showers the park is great for a full day outing. One of my favorite parts was the small stretch of rocky shoreline at the southeastern end of the beach, near the Lanikai Monument. It’s peaceful, picturesque, and perfect for photos. From there, you can enjoy sweeping views of Kailua Beach, the nearby Lanikai Beach, and the beautiful offshore islands, Moku Nui and Moku Iki.

absolutely breathtaking — one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever visited. The sand is soft and powdery, the water is a stunning turquoise, and the waves are gentle enough for swimming, kayaking, or just floating around. It feels less crowded and more relaxed compared to Waikīkī, making it perfect for families, couples, or anyone who just wants to enjoy Hawaii’s natural beauty in peace. The park itself is well-kept with plenty of space, shaded picnic areas, and facilities that make it easy to spend the whole day here. Kayaking out to the Mokulua Islands is a must if you’re up for an adventure, and the views from the shore are just as incredible. Highly recommend making this a stop on your Oahu trip!
Sami G — Google review
We enjoyed this park, we visited some other attractions in the area and it was a great place to spend the afternoon. Not a lot of natural shade but there are some trees down the beach. Sand is very soft, Caribbean type, great for walking around the bay, however, when the wind was picking up, the sand was all over the place. Great place for families with kids or older people, waves were fun without being dangerous. Facilities are outdated but working. We didn't see any lifesaving staff around. Close to restaurants and convenience stores.

🌊 5 stars – Absolutely Stunning Beach! This beach is an absolute paradise! The water is a breathtaking shade of turquoise — so clear and inviting. The soft white sand and gentle waves make it perfect for swimming and relaxing Free parking. Restrooms and outdoor showers are conveniently located just steps from the beach, which is a big help if you’re spending the whole day there. Another bonus — Buzz’s Steak House is right nearby! It’s the perfect spot to grab a delicious meal after a day in the sun. Whether you’re a local or visiting, this beach is a must-see. I’ll definitely be coming back!
Ekaterina K — Google review
Went Kayaking for the first time in my life out to the flat Island. Then ontoa secluded beach whose name escapes me. Our friends went to the Mokes. Pictures were few as we were in the water either kayaking or snorkeling. Worth the trip.
Elizabeth W — Google review
Great place to swim, walk the beach and enjoy the scenery. It is easy to find parking b/c there are so many parts to park at. Bathrooms and showers available. The pavilions are great for hosting parties.
Erica K — Google review
Wonderful soft sand feels great under your feet. The beach isn't very deep and is beginning to erode and expose the roots around the trees that outline the shoreline. When you wait into the water it drops off fairly quickly but then it's only up to your waist. There's not a lot here for waves as it is pretty well protected by the reef outside. Plenty of kite sailors here. It's fun watching their multicolored sails. Depending upon what time you get there will determine how much parking there is. Sometimes it's a little tough to find.

The Honolulu Zoo is a 42-acre family-friendly attraction located at the end of Waikiki, towards Diamond Head. It's the only zoo in the US to have originated from a king's grant by King Kalakaua. With over 900 animals, including elephants, orangutans, and komodo dragons, it offers a diverse range of wildlife. The zoo also hosts events and educational programs for visitors to enjoy.
I haven't been to a zoo in eons. This zoo has great exhibits with big animals like tigers, elephants, giraffes, a warthog, gibbons monkeys, huge tortoise and hippos! Very impressed with the reptile and bird exhibits! Wow, very cool. Plenty of shady spots to sit and rest. To the right of the entrance/gift shop and across from flamingos there's a purified refillable water fountain and bathroom. Several clean bathrooms scattered throughout the zoo. Gorgeous trees and 🌺 flowers. The parking lot has kiosks for paying - $1.50/hr. Three hours was the perfect amount of time to walk the entire zoo without rushing.
Shaktidancer — Google review
If you have little ones or just love seeing animals, I definitely recommend spending some time at the Honolulu Zoo! It’s such a fun and relaxing spot right in Waikīkī, and it’s perfect for families, couples, or anyone looking for something enjoyable to do outdoors. We visited in October with our family of 10, including several young kids, and everyone had a great time. The weather was absolutely perfect — warm but not too hot — and there was plenty of shade throughout the zoo to keep things comfortable. The grounds are beautiful and well-kept, and the staff we interacted with were friendly and welcoming. This isn’t necessarily an all-day adventure, but that’s part of what makes it great. You can easily see everything in about half a day and still feel like you got the full experience. There’s a nice variety of animals to see — some of our favorites were the different monkeys, the giraffes, the hippo, the lion, and the tiger. The bird exhibits were also amazing, with so many colorful and unique species. The kids were especially fascinated by the monkeys and loved watching them swing around and play. We appreciated that the zoo was clean, easy to navigate, and not overly crowded when we went. There are spots to grab snacks or drinks, and it’s located near plenty of places to eat if you want to grab lunch afterward. The price of admission is very reasonable, especially considering how much fun and learning it offers for kids and adults alike. Overall, we had such a great experience at the Honolulu Zoo. It’s the perfect half-day outing for families visiting Oʻahu — educational, entertaining, and just the right pace for a relaxing day. Highly recommend adding it to your list of things to do while in Honolulu!
Life R — Google review
Nice staff, clean grounds, and a decent variety of animals. Elephants, giraffes, and African Penguins were some of our favorites. Some spaces were under renovation. We didn’t realize until we were there that they also have a nighttime at the zoo event on some Saturdays. Take sunscreen, a hat, and a water bottle.
Holly W — Google review
This is the cleanest zoo I’ve ever been to and had a lot of variety of animals. I got to take my husband here for his first ever zoo experience. I love the exhibits and how it felt like you were in a world away from the city with the trees and landscape. I can tell the staff really takes care of the animals. Definitely hit up their cafe as they have delicious options that will surely satisfy your hunger. We spent a long time there as we wanted to see everything and get our tickets worth. Make sure to wear comfy shoes as it will take you more than two hours to see everything. We went on a weekday close to opening and it wasn’t too busy.
Savannah K — Google review
For $21 per adult and free for our 18 month old daughter, there is value for what you pay. That said, many exhibits were closed. We were able to enter without any wait. Bird heavy zoo/exhibits. Elephants, Giraffes and lions were my favorite. The highlight was the gibbons being quite lively (see video, volume up)! The giant koi fish were impressive as well. You’re definitely getting your steps in visiting this zoo! Be sure to pay for parking at the pay station before you enter and leave the receipt on your dashboard. Fair amount of parking.

Foster Botanical Garden, located in the heart of Honolulu, has been a tranquil oasis for tropical plants since 1853. This 14-acre garden is home to mature tropical trees and exotic plant varieties from the islands. Visitors can explore rare plant collections including a butterfly garden, conservatory, and an extensive orchid zone with flowering orchids. The garden is open every day except for Christmas and New Years, offering a serene escape from the city.
Years ago I cut through a botanical garden and was amazed at the flowers and plants. Not boring at all! Now I seek them out. Today I looked to see how far I could get on a biki bike and the last station is near Foster botanical garden in Honolulu. Best $5 admission I spent this trip. It’s hard to get it from the photos but the trees - oh the trees!! - absolutely incredible. I had no idea there were so many type of palm trees. The Baobab, cannonball, and candle trees…the pitcher plant and butterflies. Great for families. I spent 2 hours here taking my time. A must see! And as a Christian I have to say that this absolutely brought me closer to God in wonder.

For only $5 for an entry it is a great deal and a great time! Beautiful plants and trees and the LARGEST tree trunk I have ever seen from the baobab tree a great time. Also has the tallest palm tree in Hawaii in the center of it lots of birds and small creatures as well!

It’s got the oldest trees on the island. There’s a small greenhouse with some cool orchids, an outdoor butterfly area with plenty of milkweed, some mammoth baobab trees. It costs 5 bucks for visitors. It’s about a 10 minute walk from Chinatown. It felt more like a park.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Foster Botanical Garden in Honolulu, and it was an unforgettable experience! This hidden gem is a must-see for anyone who loves nature and tranquility. **Stunning Variety of Plants** The garden boasts an impressive collection of tropical plants, many of which are rare and exotic. Walking through the winding paths, I was captivated by the vibrant colors and diverse foliage. The collection of palms, orchids, and flowering trees was particularly stunning. **Peaceful Atmosphere** The serene ambiance of the garden made it the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The gentle sounds of birds and the rustling of leaves created a calming backdrop as I explored. There are plenty of benches and quiet spots to sit and soak in the beauty around you. **Informative Signage** Throughout the garden, informative signs provide details about the various plant species and their origins. This educational aspect added depth to my visit, allowing me to appreciate the botanical diversity even more. **Perfect for All** Whether you’re a plant enthusiast, a casual visitor, or looking for a peaceful place to relax, Foster Botanical Garden has something for everyone. I highly recommend taking a leisurely stroll through the garden, bringing a camera to capture the beauty, and perhaps even packing a picnic to enjoy on the lush grounds. Overall, my visit to Foster Botanical Garden was a highlight of my trip to Hawaii. It's a beautiful sanctuary that showcases the incredible biodiversity of the islands. I can’t wait to return on my next visit!

Lyon Arboretum, nestled in the Manoa valley, is a 194-acre tropical rainforest showcasing over 5,000 exotic plants and singing birds. As part of the University of Hawai'i, it serves as a research facility and aims to preserve Hawaii's rare endemic species. The arboretum offers an extensive network of paths and trails totaling over seven miles for visitors to explore its lush surroundings. Founded in 1918 by Dr. Harold L.
as a landscape architect arboretum is my go to place. this is my first time visit, I was impressed and had such amazing experience to learned about native species of Hawaii and be able to encountered with some native parrots and cardinals. However, some plants are missing IDs, and some paths are missing trail directions which would be helpful for the visitors.

Beautiful place with wonderful views, however if you come during raining season prepare to bring ponchos/rainjackets as it can get pretty rainy at times (more than I was expecting). Also put on bug spray (they sell at the gift shop if you don’t have), it is absolutely a necessity as I got bitten pretty badly on my legs. If you are sensitive to bites, I would also recommend long sleeved clothing. Personally will not be returning due to my sensitivity to bites but definitely worth checking out once for some great nature sights.

An incredible experience! Stunning scenery complemented by a diverse array of indigenous plants. Truly nature at its finest! The staff were warm and welcoming, making the visit even more enjoyable. Highly recommend to anyone who appreciates the beauty of the natural world—definitely worth your time!
Rashmi K — Google review
If Waimea Valley feels like a well-curated garden of Hawaiian endemic plants, this place feels more like nature’s wild side—diverse, lush, and almost primitive. The trails are quieter, more private, and give you the sense that you’re walking closer to nature. Plus, catching glimpses of the mountain range from inside the valley was a nice surprise. But fair warning: the mosquitoes here are thriving! During our whole stay in Oahu, we barely saw any, but today they threw a party. I gave a donation at the visitor center, while my wife ended up giving a “blood donation” to the mosquitoes. 🦟😂
Dongjae K — Google review
This is the most beautiful park I’ve ever been to. If I lived closer and had the time I would go everyday. It is truly a gem. I couldn’t stop taking pictures of this place. There is a parking nearby and a hike to the falls. Originally, I went for the hike, but I preferred this botanical garden.
Austin — Google review
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to enjoy this garden very much. First, the signs throughout the park were very absent or hard to find. Based on the map, there should be a sign at every crossroad with the number and letter that matches the number and letter on the map, so that you know where you are at any given time. However, we barely found any signs at any of the intersections. So navigating through the park was very confusing. Second there were so many mosquitoes, so I would recommend using bug sprays before you enter.

Wow, tropical jungle and huge trees. Flowers galore with the scents to go with them. We went early but not early enough, was already filling up. Go super early!
William D — Google review
I went hiking with a friend on a Tuesday afternoon. She made the ticket reservation for us the Sunday before we visited and entrance was smooth/ no wait, the road driving up to arboretum was a little rough with some pot holes but parking lot already had lovely views. It was overcast during our visit and dew covered a lot of the flowers we saw. Overall very lovely visit, just be prepared to watch your step since the route goes through both root-filled and paved areas. They also have a water spigot at the end in case your shoes get muddy. We sprayed our legs with bug spray before and didn’t get bitten. The Hawaiian section is lovely, but is a bit of an incline, views at the highest part were gorgeous. The visitor center was also very well kept. In case you forget water they sell bottles for $1 and souvenirs/shirts as well.

Keaīwa Heiau State Recreation Area, located about 12 miles from Waikiki, is a 384-acre park featuring temple ruins and a panoramic forested trail. The area is home to the 49m stone temple Keaiwa Heiau, built in the 17th century for healing practices using herbs from the garden. Visitors can explore the entrance to the Aiea Loop Trail and enjoy picnics at the campgrounds and picnic areas.
Low level difficulty, took our 4, almost 5 yr old and a small dog and we did it in about 3 hours with lots of snack and drink stops. I’d say one of my absolute favorite trail hikes when it comes to the views you get for the effort you put in. A couple spots can get muddy if it’s rained, there’s roots and uneven ground but still doable if it’s a rainy day. There are options to do the side hikes to see the waterfall or accidentally go onto a marine base(don’t do it, 1000$ fine easy). The view of pearl harbor isn’t great but still scenic. The biome changes from native large red trees, To strawberry guava trees which are invasive and are outcompeting the local trees, to then the pale white eucalyptus with the incredibly beautiful colors in the bark to then Norfolk pine to back to the red soil and large native Luhas. Such immense beauty.

It's pretty difficult to find more information about Keaīwa Heiau Campground and it doesn't have its own pin on Google Maps therefore I'll try to put some information together here. If you go to Honolulu and you're planning to camp close to the city, this is the spot for you. Camping here is inexpensive, I think $30 per party per night for non-Hawaiian residents. The Campground is in 300m (1000ft elevation). 10 camping spots (one above the parking lot, three in the forest, 6 on the grass lawn). None of them has flat even ground for the tent. Probably the best and level spot for tent is between sites 4B and 3B. Stairs to the restrooms are not on the best shape, steep and narrow. Facilities old, missing mirror, soap, shower head, door for washroom / toilet. There is no power outlet. We camped by ourselves, there was no one else which made the experience little weird. What surprised us is the amount of the cats, they're everywhere, maybe 70 of them. In the morning chickens and roosters.

This main loop in this Area has nicely paved trails that are easy to follow with some aesthetic viewpoints. I believe there are remnants of a crash-landed bomber along the path too (see pictures). There is also a breadfruit tree by the (I believe to be restored) temple.

Great hike that is relatively easy and on level ground. Round trip in less than 2 hours.

Warning: This campground's terrain is not well suited if you have a handicap person in your group. There is an extremely steep descent down steps/stairs so be prepared for lugging your gear up and down, and walking to and from the bathroom, there are lots of roots, slippery leaves. The campsite also had a lot of roots. It is nicely shaded and the breeze was nice but I don't think I will be going back.. We had a fire pit but fire pits are not at each camping area, and the campsite locations are hard to determine so look on the bottom half of your picnic table. That's how you can find your assigned campsite.

This is a great first stop on a vacation. You can stretch your legs while exploring the beautiful jungle and a historical site. Be careful when driving in there are some territorial chickens that cross and stop in the road. Make sure to mind your step and be respectful but it is worth the trip out.

Prepare to be captivated by the breathtaking beauty of this hiking trail, offering an awe-inspiring panorama of gorgeous and beautiful views. The hike is a delightful experience, especially in dry conditions, allowing you to fully appreciate the scenic wonders. However, caution is advised after rainfall, as the terrain can become muddy. To fully enjoy this natural spectacle, it's crucial to wear appropriate shoes that can handle the occasional muddy patches, ensuring a safe and enjoyable trek through the stunning landscape.

Amazing Ridge Hike! Also a nice loop trail if you are looking to do something less strenuous. Beautiful views of the city and ocean along the way. If you do the ridge hike, be prepared to have to break the trail a bit the further you go. Some very narrow areas with ropes, so you need to pay attention. Worth the amazing views!

Puʻu ʻUalakaʻa State Wayside, located on Mount Tantalus, offers breathtaking panoramic views of Honolulu and its surroundings. The park features an observation deck where visitors can admire Diamond Head Mountain and the Waikiki coastal area in the distance. On clear days, it's possible to see Honolulu Airport and Pearl Harbor from this vantage point.
Beautiful view. This mountain top has always been sacred Hawaiian land. There is mana there so be respectful. It was the place where they grew sweet potatoes for the King and his people. The name means " Hill of the rolling sweet potatoes". King Kamehameha's favorite place on Oahu.

🐝 Dropped by Puʻu ʻUalakaʻa State Wayside (aka Tantalus Lookout) on Oʻahu's Round Top Drive – what a serene escape just minutes from downtown chaos! Nestled on an ancient cinder cone at about 1,000 feet, this lush pocket of native forest delivers unobstructed 180° vistas: Diamond Head's iconic crater on one end, Waikiki's glittering beaches and high-rises in the middle, downtown Honolulu's urban buzz, and even glimpses of Pearl Harbor and Mānoa Valley to the west. Clear day? It's like a living postcard of southern Oʻahu's magic! 📸✨ Catch sunset here for that golden-hour glow over the Pacific – pure romance or chill solo vibes. The trails are a gentle win: Short, easy paved paths through koa trees and tropical foliage, with birdsong and cool breezes making it feel worlds away from the beach crowds. Historical nods to WWII remnants add a subtle layer of intrigue, plus interpretive signs for quick lore on the area's volcanic past. Free entry (no fees!), ample parking, and open daily till around 7pm – ideal for a spontaneous hike or picnic break on your Honolulu loop. Minor gripes: Narrow winding roads up can feel sketchy if you're not comfy with curves (drive slow!), and weekends bring locals for workouts, so it gets a tad busy. No facilities beyond basics, pack your snacks. Still, 4.8/5 stars – the best free overlook on the island, hands down. Elevate your Oʻahu adventure: Nature, views, and aloha all in one! 🇭🇮🌅

Nu‘uanu Pali is a historic national landmark located in the Koolau Range on the east side of Oahu, just a short drive from Downtown Honolulu. This mountain cliff features an observation point that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the lush coastline and sheer cliffs. Legend has it that in 1795, King Kamehameha and his forces drove opposition warriors over these cliffs during the campaign for Hawaiian unification.
Love this location towards the evening after 4pm. The sun hitting the mountains is beautiful. The sunrise on this side also is beautiful. It’s very windy so be prepared for that. You can just feel the history and spirit of the place. Love it so much!

Is is a very cool place to look out over the valley. It is a historical place in Hawaiian history, as you can read the story in the picture below. It tends to be windy here and beware of the bees ( I am allergic to them). You can get to the point from either direction you are traveling on the main road. You do need to pay to park and probably will have to use your phone & qr code, as the machines were not in service.

Fort DeRussy Beach, named after an old army installation, offers a relatively undeveloped and calm beach experience. The area features a beach-side park with plenty of shade, a volleyball court, and several beach-side bars. Once an Army station in the 1950s, it is now attractively maintained as a military recreation area open to the public. Visitors can also explore the Army Museum located within the park.
The beach near to my hotel is the Fort DeRussy Beach. It is only less than five minutes walk from my hotel. I was here for a few times. The best time I enjoyed to visit the beach is early in the morning before the sunrise. The views are beautiful. The area is safe and clean. So many people are walking or jogging there every morning.

Fort DeRussy Beach Park was a fantastic spot to unwind during our trip. The park offers plenty of space, making it easy to find a quiet spot to relax, and we felt very safe throughout our time there. We walked and sunbathed here almost every day—it was the perfect place to escape the crowds. The area was consistently clean, and the large grassy space was ideal for lounging or picnicking. Plus, there’s a little bar nearby where we could grab refreshing Mai Tais, adding to the overall laid-back vibe. It’s a great spot for both relaxation and enjoying the natural beauty of Waikīkī. Would definitely recommend it!

This beach offers beautiful views of Diamond Head, with calm waters perfect for swimming. There’s a nearby bar to relax at, and a pleasant walkway along the beach for a nice stroll. The sand is clean and not too rocky. Due to the high foot traffic on the concrete walkway, it’s wise to keep valuables securely stored to prevent theft.

This beach is very beautiful, with many coconut trees, and you can see a beautiful mountain in the distance, but it is not suitable for snorkeling. The water near the beach is very turbid, and you have to swim far away to see a little bit fish. After swimming for nearly an hour the second time, we didn't see any fish, and it was difficult to swim back to the beach because of the waves, which was a bit disappointing.

Moanalua Dog Park, located in Honolulu on the island of Oahu, is one of the oldest dog parks in the area. The park features a spacious grass and dirt area that is fully fenced off, providing ample space for dogs to run and play. With large trees offering shade throughout the day, it's a popular spot for dog owners to bring their furry companions.
I was with someone who ran out of gas on the viaduct overlooking the park. It was nighttime so I couldn't really see the park A very nice police officer stopped and waiting while we went and got gas. Thanks to Brian F who came to our rescue

While some have noted issues with non-functional water fountains, many visitors have enjoyed engaging with other dog owners in this vibrant community space.
I had to stop with my dogs for a few hours after picking them up from the airport quarantine station for their next flight. This was the perfect stop. It's clean and large. Only problem is the water fountains are just a decoration. Make sure you bring some water with you.

Ala Wai Dog Park is a delightful haven for dogs and their owners, nestled near the Ala Wai Canal. Spanning approximately 15,000 square feet, this off-leash park features two separate enclosures—one for larger breeds and another for smaller pups—connected by a gate if needed. The park is fully fenced with a secure double-gate entrance to ensure safety while your furry friends frolic freely.
Great experience. The dog park is split into big and small dogs. But when there's no sports on the adjacent softball field, many owners take their dogs there. The people there are very responsible with their dogs, picking up after them and keeping an eye on their dog. Great opportunity for training and socialize too.

Nice location but the construction destruction in 2005 destroyed the nice secluded area with the highest terrain along the Ala Wai allowing the obtrusive headlights from Waikiki to invade our once beautiful starlit park and now spotlights from Iolani School ruin this secluded starview experience
Rodney E — Google review
Our dog really enjoys this park. We like to go later in the afternoon and there were usually 1-5 other small dogs for him to play with. There is nearby free parking behind the school athletic fields. As others mentioned, the park is small and there is not too much shade. If you are looking for a larger park with more shade, try the park near Diamond Head.
Mark W — Google review
The dog park area has separate areas for large and small dogs. Given the size of Ala Wai Park, they could have made the dog park area much larger. The small dog side had at least 15 dogs in it. While it's great to have a place to let him off the leash, the area is too confined for so many dogs.

A'ala Bark Park is a delightful haven for dog lovers and their furry companions, nestled in a spacious area of about 10,000 square feet. This park features two distinct sections: one dedicated to small dogs and the other for larger breeds, allowing pups to frolic freely off-leash in a safe environment. Visitors can enjoy lounging on the lush green grass under the shade of trees while engaging in friendly conversations or simply soaking up the serene atmosphere.
Wow, A' ala Park! I know this is one of my favorite places. I enjoy lounging in the plush green grass. Often I spend several hours there amongst some trees, resting in the cool shade, sitting around talking story, et cetera, this park is good for a lot of uses. Caution though, as the place is slightly haunted, it might be time to go, still go. I have heard stories of time past. A stage, baseball diamond, and other parts of the park were different during other times, but however I'm sure it would still look, feel this same to me. Cars would be wildly different. I have met all kinds of people there from all over. We are all children of Aala Park, another one of my fine southern homes with scenic views, of large trees, the river, its deep banks that ebb and flows with the tide, with rustic rock walls. I like it!
Jeffry L — Google review
Then park is great for what it is and where it is. I only give it 3 stars because its is often damaged or the fence us broken. There are a lot of homeless at the park its self but they don't often bother you inside the dog park. The only other complaint is that there isn't any water inside of the dog park itself you have to walk out of the dog park and down the sidewalk to find a water fountain at the park itself so can you get water yes do you have to go out of your way to do so yes and if you don't have a bowl of your own then the dog won't have water
Amanda D — Google review
This is not the park in the picture. The one I ended up at looked as if it doesn't get kept up. There were homeless people all around. Dogs can play anywhere, they laid in the dirt here because there's no grass..Not a place I will tell friends about... Not that I have any to tell.... You get it

Magic Island is a fun spot to visit in Honolulu because there’s always something going on - people BBQing, couples taking engagement photos, kids playing, runners, hammock loungers… it’s a vibe. I ran a 5K here and loved it since the path is flat and easy. The sunsets are unreal (think fiery pinks and oranges). Just a heads up though that the park closes at night, so make sure to read the car signs so that your car doesn’t get towed!

It’s crystal clear and there’s amenities available (toilet, shower, change room etc). The water stays shallow til quite far out, we even managed to find a sunken boat about 3/4 out with tonnes of fish around it. Bring a snorkel if you have one! Moanalua Gardens, located just a few miles northwest of Honolulu, is a 24-acre park with a rich historical background dating back to the Hawaiian monarchy. The site features the Kamehameha V Cottage and is known for its stunning Monkeypod trees, including the famous Hitachi Tree that has been an iconic symbol since 1975. The annual Prince Lot Hula Festival takes place here, adding to the cultural significance of the gardens.
The trees are spectacular, we just walked around for 30 mins or so, and fed the ducks and the koi with food we purchased at the entrance. The public bathrooms are nice. The ducks and the fish were a highlight. There are picnic tables. The admission is for the whole day so you could leave and go get food and come back later to picnic. Has a famous Hitachi tree.

Garden? I would characterize this as a park with some very beautiful large trees and plenty of mango 🥭 trees among them. Although some call this botanical but it is far from it for one, the former royalty 👑 guest house 🏠 or retreat isn't accessible to the public for years as we were told. Just one restroom 🚻 by the main entrance and for our surprise, the restrooms are very clean and neat. Overall a little disappointed not have anything discovered except trees, the freeway right next to this park didn't help with the constant noise. The admission even for locals isn't justified whatsoever, out of state visitors find out the hard way.

Most popular and easiest beach to go in Oahu. It is not the most clean and beautiful but because this beach is right in the front of Waikiki, you can just walk there and enjoy almost everything. The beach is totally city vibe so if you can't stand being crowded you might have to come super early or late night, but you won't see anything or if you rent a car you can go to another beach that more private. Overall, I like it. so lively and festive.

Kūhiō Beach is great, due to the fact that it has a wall that breaks the big waves which makes it very safe for children and for people that can't swim very well. Ther is also a side for experienced swimmers that prefer to catch waves, go farther in the ocean, or surf.

✨ Kuhio Beach is super fun! There are always lots of happenings, music, and activities. Today there was even a competition, and the atmosphere was amazing! 🎶🏖️ Definitely a must-visit spot in Waikiki.

Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden, located in Kaneohe, is a 400-acre tropical paradise featuring a man-made freshwater lake and hiking trails. The garden offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life with its lush greenery and peaceful ambiance. Visitors can explore different geographical regions of the world through the diverse plant collections while enjoying stunning photo opportunities.
Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden – A Peaceful Paradise on Oʻahu Our visit to Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden was the perfect way to slow down and immerse ourselves in Oʻahu’s lush beauty. 🌿 A Scenic Arrival The drive to the garden takes you through a charming residential area, and as soon as you reach the entrance, the scenery opens into something spectacular. We stopped at the park office, where one of the staff kindly explained the importance of this and other parks in the area—sharing insight that made our visit even more meaningful. 🥾 Exploring the Trails The garden offers many trails to wander, and we happily spent hours exploring them. Every path felt like a new chapter in a story, with towering greenery, colorful plants, and plenty of wildlife. We spotted different wild animals and butterflies, which made the experience even more magical. 🍱 Lunch with a View We packed our own lunch and enjoyed it surrounded by nature—an incredibly peaceful break before continuing our walk. 🌦️ Helpful Tips for Visitors • It gets hot here, and at times a little wet—be prepared for changing weather. • Wear shoes with good traction, especially if you’re tackling the muddier trails. • Bring insect repellent, and please make it an environmentally friendly one to help protect the plants and wildlife. 🌸 Final Thoughts Ho‘omaluhia Botanical Garden is truly a perfect place to enjoy nature. Whether you’re here for a quiet stroll, photography, or simply to take in the views, you’ll leave refreshed and inspired.

This is not your typical Botanical Garden. It's more like a drive, stop, and view overlook experience. The variety of plants is mind blowing. They have vegetation from all over the world. The Mountains and Foliage is lush and green. The park is free which is great. I would have been happy to pay a few bucks to support better signage and pedestrian pathways. It's definitely worth a visit.

What a beautiful and amazing place to drive through. They made it super accessible by car. This place is perfect for people that aren’t advanced hikers as nothing is too long and everything is very accessible. The beauty is captivating and super picturesque. You can be here for 30 minutes or you can spend 5 hours here. Bring the family or come on a date. You really cannot go wrong.

100% must do when you visit the island. I took the bus from Waikiki to the gardens. Not too bad of a bus ride and I highly recommend going early in the morning. After walking through a beautiful neighbored you arrive at the gates of the garden. Lush greenery with amazing mountain tops and oversized ancient trees. Breathtaking! Once you arrive to the visitor areas, you can view some fun facts and make your way to the lake. Another jaw dropping moment. Ducks, birds, the VIEW......... sit on the bench to take it all in. It's absolutely beautiful. I can't believe you pay nothing to enter. I would go back 100 times.
Jelica G — Google review
Beautiful free public gardens on the far side of the mountains away from Waikiki. We had a rental car so it was an easy half hour drive. I agree with the recommendations to drive all the way to the end first look around and then work your way back be sure and allow time to stop at the visitor center and get oriented and have a view of the lake and learn more about all the different plants you’ve seen their website has a great detailed map as well. That’s good to preview if you want to see a specific area or species.

Bellows Field Beach Park is a stunning oceanfront park with lush surroundings, offering beach access and picturesque mountain views. The park features 50 campsites divided into two sections: one requiring a military ID and the other open to the public. Both sections provide beachside camping opportunities with soft white sand, shaded areas from ironwood trees, clear blue waters, and breathtaking sunrise views.
One of my favorite beaches on Oahu. Because it requires a military ID not many people have access so we were able to enjoy the beach practically alone. The beach is clean and the water perfectly turquoise. It was a great experience.

Heard about this spot from a friendly army fellah - spot on. The sand was nice n soft, waves surprisingly gentle for the wee ones, and the view was epic. Great spot. We came nice and early, practically had the beach to ourselves. 5 for 5 all day long. 🤙

Fantastic place to spend a beach day. Note: You need a military ID to enter or be with someone who does. Beautiful setting. Good waves for boogie boarding, body surfing. Restroom facilities as well.

Bellows Field Beach Park is a stunning destination for anyone who loves the ocean and fresh air. The beach features crystal-clear water that sparkles in the sunlight, creating a perfect setting for a relaxing swim or a leisurely walk along the shore. The atmosphere is calm and refreshing, with clean sand and plenty of open space to unwind. I truly enjoyed spending time here, as the gentle waves and natural surroundings make it easy to forget the rush of daily life. Swimming in the clear blue water was especially enjoyable—it felt both invigorating and peaceful. Open saturdays and sundays to the public. Went on Sunday and It was busy, but there was still a good amount of parking left. Still spacious enough to feel like you weren’t encroaching in someone else’s space. Bluest water I’ve seen in a while 🩵 so beautiful. Koko Crater Botanical Garden is a unique 200-acre crater featuring a diverse collection of blooming plants, cacti, and foliage. Situated near the renowned Koko Crater hiking spot, the garden specializes in arid, dryland, and Mediterranean climate plants while also showcasing an international array of flora. The micro-climate within the crater creates a desert-like environment where visitors can observe native Hawaiian plants alongside exotic species from Africa, Madagascar, and beyond.
We got here late in the day so didn’t get to see it all, but loved everything that we got to! The plumeria groves were beautifully in bloom and right near the parking lot, so even people who weren’t up to a hike were able to check them out. The park signage said it was a 2 mile loop trail to see the full extent of the gardens, which includes native Hawaiian, African, American, and Pacific plants. The trail itself was rocky and a little uneven, so wear sneakers and plan for that. They had a few picnic tables in the plumeria grove, so even if you don’t want to go into the rest of the garden it’s a great place to sit and enjoy.
Madeline K — Google review
A Hidden Gem Inside a Volcanic Crater! We visited the Koko Crater Botanical Garden during our trip to Oahu, and it was one of the highlights of our vacation! The garden is uniquely located inside the crater of an ancient volcano, which makes for a truly special experience. The 2-mile loop trail takes about 1.5 hours to complete, and along the way, you’ll see a wide variety of rare and exotic plants from around the world. Highlights include: • Plumeria grove with a stunning range of colors and fragrances • Cactus and succulent collection with massive and unusual shapes • Unique trees from Africa, Madagascar, and Hawaii The garden is free to enter, but be prepared — there are minimal facilities (only a portable toilet and no drinking water), so bring water and wear sturdy shoes. It’s also best to arrive early since parking is limited. Highly recommended for nature lovers and anyone looking to explore a peaceful, lesser-known spot on Oahu!
Aleksandr D — Google review
I visited on August 5, 2025. This place features plants adapted to dry climates, and you really get the feeling of being inside a crater. You can see plumerias in various colors, so I think it’s worth visiting as a hiking spot. Don’t forget to bring a water bottle!
Takeyuki N — Google review
High desert area with a lovely plumeria grove, cacti and gardens from several areas were represented. Loop trail is unpaved, rocky and climbs uphill so please wear sturdy footwear and watch your step. Best time is early morning before the heat or late evening for sunset. Lot was almost empty when I went so plenty of parking just don’t leave valuables in your car since the area is a little secluded.
J H — Google review
This is a hidden gem! We were very impressed. So many beautiful plumeria groves and other plants that we did not expect to see from Hawaii and many other tropical places. These gardens are also very secluded with a small parking lot. We ran into less than 5 people while there. Highly recommend over other gardens on the island.
Emily D — Google review
After visiting Foster botanical garden this was a bit of a let down. There are some very interesting trees and the cactus garden is fantastic but lots of empty or dull segments for a non-botanist. The trail is rugged so if you trip easy or have poor balance bring hiking shoes and possibly poles. Bring water. It gets hot! It makes for a nice loop walk though, taking about 1.5 hours. We got our steps in!
Jeff S — Google review
Beautiful garden that has a wide variety of plants & trees from around the world. It took us about 1.5 hours to do the loop that included lots of stops to look at our map & identify plants. The brochure provided was informative & very helpful.
Victoria D — Google review
In addition to flowers such as plumeria, there are various plants from around the world, including cacti. The trail is longer than expected, so I recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes such as sneakers and bringing plenty of water with you.

Lulumahu Falls is a hidden gem in Oahu, accessible via an unofficial and unmarked trail that takes hikers through a bamboo forest and across a stream. Despite previous restrictions, permits are now issued for this hike by the Honolulu Board of Water Supply. The 2.5-mile round-trip trail offers a mix of beginner-friendly terrain and rewarding sights such as a 50-foot waterfall, secret ruins, and lush rainforest scenery.
This was one of our favorite spots during our trip. We ventured out there twice taking different trails each way and exploring all around! My husband and I even danced in the bamboo forest to our favorite song it was magical. The falls were gorgeous but slippery so be very careful. We wore hiking shoes and clothes over our swimsuits the first time the next time we went we wore water shoes and just our swimsuits and brought water. The less you bring the better! We had no trouble finding a parking spots when we went but there is limited parking.
Kristine H — Google review
We hiked this in April. It had been raining most days leading up to this, and we actually got rained on while hiking it. It was a beautiful hike though and I love that the waterfall area was swimable. Not too crowded, with free parking. It gets a bit steep near the last part, with some boulders to climb over, and trail wasn't completely obvious at times.
DD H — Google review
It’s a nice hike, but…The trails can be a bit confusing and slippery in some spots, definitely wear good grippy shoes, and be prepared for mud with any recent amount of rain. There was also one trail towards the back end of the falls that went straight up the side of the steep incline and then basically ended. I turned some kids around who were walking that way because it was truly treacherous in that spot at least. Other than that, it was a pretty decent moderate to challenging hike, which wound back and forth across the water several times, so if you go, wear good water/hiking shoes that you’re not afraid to get wet! We hiked in with a backpack with water and a small picnic lunch, which we enjoyed by the falls which were very pretty and refreshingly cool as well. It’s about 2-3 miles in total depending on how much you switch back and forth as you hike.
Meghan S — Google review
You do need a permit for this hike! Even though it has been raining (not hard or a lot though) days leading up to this hike (its Hawaii it rains everyday lol) it was not overly muddy and we did not find it too difficult to hike or follow the trail with our 1.5 year old and our 3.5 year old (who hiked the whole thing himself!). Warning ⚠️ a woman there told us large rocks fall down from the top of the waterfall so despite how beautiful it is you might not want to stand right under the falls.
Tara B — Google review
This one was fun, a nice bamboo forest, graffiti’d bunker, open field, and a good sized waterfall. Everything you could ask for in a Hawaii hike. Somehow we got lost, and apparently that’s not uncommon. We ran into some other folks that were lost but it’s very easy to find where you need to go once you realize you’re off trail. Download an offline map on all trails if you’re worried about running in circles. Waters deep enough to swim in, fun rocks to climb on. Lovely spot, not obnoxiously crowded either.
Lee S — Google review
A great hike through a bamboo forest, possibly a Hollywood set, and up a hike to a wonderful waterfall. It is approximately two miles and a half. About an hour round trip, but a must see location.
Traveling K — Google review
Not at easy hike. You need a permit, it costs like $2.50. The trail is NOT maintained meaning there are no signs, no restroom. Follow the different-colored ribbons, they’ll take you to the waterfalls if you’re confused where to go (there are millions of different ways to get to the waterfall since it’s literally just forest)
Fira G — Google review
BEAUTIFUL waterfall worth the hike. The trail can be very slippery and hard to follow at times so make sure you are prepared for that.

Honestly, I'm leaving very disappointed in this place. I have a 17-month-old baby with allergies, so I have to pack her snacks when we go out. We went to the cafeteria, sat down, and a lady told us that if we didn't buy anything from there, we had to sit outside. It's summer time and it's hot outside; the cafeteria was nearly empty, with about five empty tables. I understand that you want us to buy from you, but this is rude and mistreatment. Honestly, I don't think I'll go back to this place or recommend it.

While there are only a few tables available, the tranquil atmosphere makes it a lovely place to unwind. It’s worth noting that there are no nearby cafes; the closest options are a Safeway and a Starbucks a few miles away, so be sure to bring your own food if you plan to picnic. Overall, I highly recommend He'eia State Park for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy a quiet meal in a beautiful setting.

This park is a hidden gem that will surprise you with its natural beauty. Don’t judge it by its modest entrance or its small parking lot. You have to get out of your car and explore the trails to discover its wonders. 🚶‍♂️ The first time I came here, I didn’t see much and left quickly. But I decided to give it another chance and I’m so glad I did. On my second visit, I followed a trail that led me to a breathtaking view of an ancient fishing pond. It was like stepping into a different world. 🌎 🐟 But that was not all. As I continued down the trail, I saw the magnificent Kaneohe Bay and its famous sandbar, a ring of turquoise water that changes with the tide. 🌊 It was a sight to behold. And there was more. I went back up the hill and found another trail that took me to a secluded beach where kayaks were available for rent. 🛶 You can paddled to the sandbar and enjoyed a marvelous marine adventure. This park is a must-see for anyone who loves nature and wants to escape the city. 🌇 Don’t miss it!

Neal S. Blaisdell Park offers a picturesque setting with cycling and jogging paths, picnic areas, and a grassy space overlooking Pearl Harbor. The park is ideal for family gatherings, picnics, or outdoor activities like flag football. Visitors can enjoy bayside walks or bike rides along the adjacent trail. While the park provides ample parking and spacious grounds for various activities, there have been occasional concerns about homeless individuals in the area at night.
Neil S. Blaisdell Park – A Serene Stop with a Double Rainbow Surprise Sometimes the most memorable experiences are the ones you don’t plan—and that’s exactly what happened at Neil S. Blaisdell Park. 🌧️🌈 A Magical Moment After the Rain We were driving when we spotted something extraordinary: a thick, vibrant double rainbow stretching end to end across the sky. It had just rained, and while rainbows in Hawaii aren’t rare, this one was picture-perfect—bold, full, and glowing like a postcard come to life. It was so beautiful, we had to pull over. 🐓 A Slice of Local Life As we parked, we saw a few wild chickens pecking through the grass—a familiar and charming sight around the island. Others were already standing in awe, phones in hand, admiring the rainbow with the same wonder we felt. It was a shared moment of quiet joy among strangers. 🌴 A Peaceful Pit Stop The park itself is clean, open, and inviting, with grassy areas, trees, and views that make it a great place to just pause and breathe. Whether you’re there for a jog, a picnic, or like us, simply passing through—it offers a peaceful atmosphere to enjoy the moment. 🌅 A Perfect Ending to the Day That rainbow was the perfect sendoff to our day, and the park was the perfect place to witness it. Sometimes nature stops you in your tracks—and this was one of those unforgettable moments. ⭐ Final Thoughts Neil S. Blaisdell Park may not be on every travel guide’s front page, but for us, it became a highlight. If you’re nearby, don’t hesitate to stop, stretch your legs, and see what the sky might show you. You never know when a double rainbow might appear.

It's a great wide open park, great for jump houses, lots of space. Parking is very spacious. There are bathrooms, but it could use some cleaning. Though the custodian do great work, it's when there gone the restrooms get messy. Aside from that it's a great park.

This is a nice park with plenty of space for a family gathering, picnic or game of flag football. So glad we stopped to eat our Arby's here. Tons of green space for running around, frizby, throwing a ball, Tai Chi classes, and more. There's plenty of picnic tables. Two playgrounds, multiple gazebos, and a long, gorgeous, and paved trail. Who could ask for more?

Went walking a dog there around 9am while waiting on someone at a nearby physician's office. Lots of homeless. There also was some cars meeting up for just minutes at a time then leaving. It didn't look like they were trading cookies. Didn't feel welcoming, won't be coming back.

Hiking Trails
Nestled in the lush Manoa Valley on Oahu, the ʻAihualama Trail offers a captivating and invigorating hike through stunning landscapes. This 2.4-mile trail connects to both the Pauoa Flats Trail and the popular Manoa Falls Trail, providing access to Aihualama Falls, also known as Manoa Falls. While slightly more challenging than its counterpart, this trail is less crowded and leads hikers to a picturesque waterfall.
Beautiful nature hike to the waterfall. Parking was $7 and plentiful. Make sure you have hiking boots as some of the hike can get slippery. There is another much longer and challenging hike you can attempt if you’d like at the waterfall which I did not do.

I was looking for an entrance to swim in Mānoa Falls because I thought you could swim in the falls. I got lost so I ended up hiking this trail. Hiked from Mānoa Falls and exited at Kalāwahine trail. So, I am not sure if there is any entry point aside from Mānoa Falls. From Mānoa falls, you would have to pass a steep part where you would have to put you feet in between tree roots to pass. Lots of crouching from fallen trees and some narrow path. It was also rainy.

This is a great trail. Tried getting up to the ridge from the other side on the Judd trail and this is 100% easier. Well traveled and relatively flat the entire way. The manoa falls trail is easy, so this is a great supplement if you want to burn a couple lore hours with a great view up top.
Brandon D — Google review
This is a great trail for those that enjoy hiking, it connects with other trails: Manoa Falls, Pauoa Flats, Nu'uanu, and Pu'u Ohia. This isn't something I'd recommend for your little ones, if you mind getting muddy/dirty, or you're protective of your ankles/knees. There are places where stepping in/thru water is required. Climbing under/over debris may be necessary as well. However, the views and wildlife are worth the mud and sweat.
Micah P — Google review
Good hike. A little rocky and a little wet in areas but definitely enjoyable. The view about 2/3 thé way through was amazing.
Destiny Y — Google review
This trail is more moderate for any experienced hiker... But if you are not that active and or have any pre-existing conditions that make it difficult for you to walk on a steep incline with slippery rocks and mud do not take this hike to avoid injury on your vacation. It will take about 2 hours round trip and be VERY muddy at the top and will ruin your shoes. This is more of a trail for working out as opposed to a tourist trail. While out there were many people were in flip flops/tennis shoes not prepared for the mud and rocks. And also has NO water 😬 There's not many views during the hike but at the end is a nice look out point that's breezy and cool! Note this will NOT take you to the top of the falls!
Kent G — Google review
Beautiful. Easy parking. Trail is paved and largely shaded. Can get muddy after a rain. Highly recommend...beautiful scenery.
Cher — Google review
Not to be confused with the Manoa Falls trail. This one takes you up in the mountain to the Nu’uanu lookout. I went on a rainy day and it took me 4 hours roundtrip since it was very slippery and muddy. Be aware that some parts of the trail are narrow so you have to be careful. The view at the top is pretty nice but you won’t be able to see the ocean that much if that’s what you’re expecting. Don’t take nice shoes, they will get dirty!

Thomas Square is a historic city park established in 1843, featuring a dancing fountain surrounded by banyan trees. It's conveniently located near the Honolulu Museum of Art and offers a large grassy field for kids to play. The park also serves as the start and finish point for events like the Kings Runner 10k. With its beautiful trees, water feature, and a gazebo at its center, it provides a calm and relaxing environment in the midst of the bustling city.

A nice place to camp if you’re homeless. If you’re not, it’s still a nice, safe park in the centre of the city to sit or stroll around. I didn’t venture to the bathrooms, however. Massive and very cool banyan tree gazebo in the middle of the park.

This was the start and finish of the King’s Runner 10k and like most of the parks on the island, it was nice and beautiful. It had those big trees that offered shade and a nice water area. It was quite busy because of the race, but I would think it would be calm and relaxing when not hosting an event.

The Paki Community Park seemed to be in better condition, with no signs of graffiti and relatively new facilities. Despite a few concerns about safety, such as reports of a homeless person causing trouble in the bathroom, the park provided an enjoyable experience for children. It was a fun place where kids could easily find their classmates or make new friends to play with. The park also had impressive climbing trees and several shaded areas near the beach, allowing children to enjoy outdoor activities without being bothered by bugs.
Paki Community Park is a charming, well-maintained park with playgrounds, picnic spots, and sports facilities. Ideal for families and casual outdoor activities.

Decent offerings as far as these places go, and sadly it's pretty much the only option in Waikiki. Pigeon poop all over the benches and play equipment, and one pooped on my stroller today. Unhoused folk hang out in the nearby restroom and could be scary for little ones. So yeah.
Josh T — Google review
The playground appeared to be newer or at least better maintained, no graffiti. There was a bathroom there, but some of the other parents were saying that a homeless person hit one of the kids inside so a bit sketchy.

I love that it is so near and the fire station is literally next to it. The only thing I don't like about this park is that the light post are not working and the ones that are are barely lit. The restrooms needs to be clean too. The bonus is you can hear the monkeys doing monkey business and see the giraffes

Nuʻuanu Pali State Wayside is a popular ridgetop lookout located about 5 miles northeast of Honolulu, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of Windward Oahu from its 1,186-ft.-high vantage point. From this windy perch, visitors can take in the sweeping vista that includes Kaneohe Bay, Kailua, Mokolii Island (Chinaman's Hat), and the coastal fishpond at Kualoa Point.
The view from the lookout is great, as the distance from the parking lot to the lookout is short. Parking is free for Hawaii residents, otherwise it costs $7. The view from the lookout is very good, and it is worth visiting at least once. It is a pity that there are no related tourist attractions.

### Nuʻuanu Pali State Wayside Review: Epic Views & Windy Wonders! 🌬️🏞️ Just hit up Nuʻuanu Pali State Wayside on Oʻahu's Pali Highway – total showstopper! Perched on sheer cliffs at 1,200 feet, the panoramic sweep of the Windward Coast is unreal: lush Koʻolau mountains, sparkling Kāneʻohe Bay, and Kailua beaches stretching forever. On a clear day like ours, it's pure postcard magic! 📸✨ Even cloudy, the misty vibes add drama. Pro tip: Go early to beat crowds and snag prime selfie spots – it's a quick stop from Honolulu, perfect for a road trip break. The wind? Legendary! Trade winds whip through like a natural tunnel, strong enough to lean into (kids will love it, but hold hats tight!). 🌪️ It's what makes this spot feel alive, channeling that ancient energy from the 1795 Battle of Nuʻuanu – where Kamehameha I claimed victory. Historical plaques add cool context without overwhelming the chill factor. Easy access, short paved path to the lookout, and interpretive signs for history buffs. Downsides: $7 parking fee stings a bit (no bathrooms beyond porta-potties, oof), and high winds can close it occasionally – check ahead! Safety first near edges, folks. Overall, 4.7/5 stars – a must-do for Oʻahu's wild beauty. Wind in your hair, history at your feet: Aloha adventure unlocked! 🇭🇮❤️

Nu'uanu Pali Lookout is a site of historical significance that was the location of the Battle of Nu'uanu in 1795. The blustery lookout has an amazing panoramic view of the windward northeast coast of Oʻahu. There is no entrance fee; however, you’ll need to pay for parking at the parking meters unless you’re a local resident or military. There are portable restrooms onsite.

If you like to experience breathtaking views and see the ocean, this is a great spot while you are visiting Oahu. You definitely will need a car or buy a tour to come to this place. Well worth it to be honest and something you want to experience. There are hikes you can do in this area, be ready to pay for parking if you want to hike. I recommend doing this trip on a weekday versus weekend. Hope you go visit and experience this gorgeous views. #chicosreviews

Pearl Harbor National Memorial is a significant site that commemorates the 1941 Pearl Harbor attack. It includes the USS Arizona Memorial, a museum, and galleries. Managed by the National Park Service, it consists of five distinct destinations. The memorial not only tells the story of the devastating Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor but also covers other historical events such as wartime internment of Japanese Americans and World War II battles.
We were there when there was two construction so it was not possible to get advanced tickets. We were able to get there early in the morning and get on the waiting list. Then I'm already outside is very moving. The memorial itself is actually US Navy property and the personnel are very military and expect respect and reverence. The historical visitor center information was interesting. We didn't pay for the guided out of your tour but didn't feel it we were missing anything. There are two other museums that are attached for an additional charge but the national park itself is free. We found the park rangers here to be exceptional and very well versed in their subject matter.

Hard not to tear up out here. So many families changed instantly. Eternal respect for all those who serve with honor. Heaven forbid those have to pay the same sacrifice! Word to the wise- don't see anywhere listed that the last boat out to the USS Arizona Memorial is at 330 pm (1530 hrs), though the Park is open until 5 pm. (1700 hrs) The Bowfin is quite an experience to walk through..These guys we're tasked with one of the ultimate risks of a wartime environment. Getting thru the bulkhead doors was something at 65 w two total hips....they ran through them when needed elsewhere in the Sub. Truly astounding. The museum for the submarine service is remarkable. Lots to learn there. Too much to see in one or two visits....we need to return. Reckon this place is a huge linchpin in United States history. Gettysburg, Lexington, and Pearl Harbor; all US citizens should be able to recite their importance in US history. Can I? Not completely, and it's shameful. Sure I learned some in 4th grade, and on. But these events are what our freedoms are founded on; what gave us and the world notice of our ability and intent following those events. We should all know them better.

If you’re planning a trip to Oahu, visiting the Pearl Harbor National Memorial is an absolute must. It’s one of those places that really makes history come alive, and best of all, entry is completely free. The memorial is beautifully maintained, and the exhibits do an incredible job of telling the story of Pearl Harbor and the events of World War II. It’s a powerful, moving experience that gives you a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made by so many. A few tips to make your visit smoother: if you’re driving, pay for parking because spots fill up fast, especially in the mornings. Speaking of mornings, I highly recommend arriving early—the lines for the USS Arizona Memorial ferry can get long. The ferry itself is free, and it’s a serene, respectful way to pay your respects at the Arizona. One important note: no bags are allowed on the ferry, so plan to leave them at home or securely in your car. Take your time walking through the exhibits and reading the plaques—there’s a lot of history packed into the memorial, and it’s really worth absorbing. Whether you’re a history buff or just curious about one of the most significant moments in American history, this visit is both educational and moving. Overall, the Pearl Harbor National Memorial is an unforgettable experience. It’s well-organized, meaningful, and a must-see if you’re on Oahu. Don’t miss it!

This is a large memorial that has various sections spread across the area, and involves a lot of walking. There are several attractions on site, all ticketed separately, or can be combined with one single passport pass. The only free attraction is the Arizona Memorial, for which you actually get on a free 5 minute boat ride, and get to spend 15 minutes at the site. The rest include various plaques, sculptures, memorial boards etc. All ticketing and experience details are listed and priced on the official website. Would highly recommend wearing easy to walk shoes, and bring a hat as most attractions are open air and it’s hot when sunny. There are restrooms located across various points. There is a gift shop and book store at the exit of the memorial. The virtual reality tours are really nice and very decently priced.
Avais S — Google review
A once in a lifetime experience. All that you read about visiting it is confusing. Go and just enjoy the Memorial and gain your own memories. The movie is a MUST see. The trip to the Arizona is a nice boat ride. You only need about 15 minutes on the Arizona Memorial its self. Enjoy the park wander and explore what is interesting to you. Take in what you can and don't feel like you have to do it all. If you have never been on a battleship or submarine experience it here otherwise there is plenty to explore. Nice gift shop lots of unique its specific to Pearl Harbor. I did a self guided tour was there for 3 hour and was happy with my visit. They sell snacks and drinks. Have adequate restrooms. DO NOTE WHAT TYPE OF BAG YOU TRY TO BRING IN. I had a clear see through bag with water and snacks and had no problem.

This is an awesome place to visit if you are wanting an awesome ocean view, to see the sunset, or even playing pickleball with all that has been mentioned above!! This was a gem for my husband and I to find since we always travel with our paddles and are constantly on the lookout for courts wherever we go. We played a couple of games and if we got too hot, we just jump in the ocean!!! We got the perfect trifecta: pickleball, ocean background, and an amazing sunset view!!! Tantalus Lookout, situated within Puu Ualakaa State Park just outside Honolulu, offers a less strenuous yet equally fulfilling experience for visitors. The lookout provides stunning panoramic views of the Diamond Head volcano cone and the Waikiki skyline, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely picnic against the backdrop of a picturesque sunset.
This place is absolutely magical and well worth the drive! The winding switchbacks on the way up and back and filled with all sorts of beautiful trees, plants, and flowering bushes. It's well maintained and there are mirrors on tight curves so you won't hit anyone. The lookout point has plenty of parking and is clean and well maintained as well. It's such a beautiful view of a good portion of the island, and we got to sit in the mist as well. We even saw wild pigs on our way out!

This lookout is great! Takes a while to get there though. You have to drive up some winding roads on the cliff side. But eventually you get to a small parking lot with a nice lookout! May be a bit windy/chilly, but the view is fabulous! Great place to look out at town, diamond head, the airport, sand Island, and Pearl harbor!

The finest of experiences are always the unexpected ones. This is the last minute visit before our flight back to home next morning. Sometimes the best moments come from spontaneous decisions, and this was absolutely one of them. The drive up experience was great 👍 no traffic and easy. Roads were well maintained and clean. And while at the peak, the best sunset was offered right upon arrival - unplanned but unforgettable. One of the hidden gems and it's amazing to see the city and Diamond Head from another angle. 💯♥️🫶

There is a lookout in this park that provides a panoramic view of Honolulu and Waikiki. The view is gorgeous. Also a perfect place to watch sunset. One thing to note is that it does get really windy here. There are two parking lots available near this lookout. The one right next to the lookout is very small. It only holds about a dozen cars. The safer bet is to park at the slightly further parking lot with only a five minute walk to the Vista point.

Tantalus Lookout – A Last-Minute Detour Worth Every Turn Our visit to Tantalus Lookout wasn’t planned—but sometimes the best moments come from spontaneous decisions, and this was definitely one of them. The drive up to the lookout is an experience in itself. It’s a narrow, winding road that snakes through lush forest and climbs steadily up the mountain. Take it slow, be cautious, and don’t worry about the cars behind you—there’s no passing, and your only concern should be your safety and the people with you. Despite the tight curves, the drive is thrilling and beautiful, with sneak peeks of the view as you ascend. When we finally reached the top and parked, the view completely took us by surprise. Stretching out in front of us was a panoramic view of Honolulu, Diamond Head, and the Pacific Ocean, all the way from the east to the west. It was quiet, peaceful, and absolutely stunning. There was plenty of parking when we arrived, and the lookout area offered space to walk around and take in the scenery. Whether you’re into photography, sunsets, or just looking for a moment of calm above the city, this spot delivers. In short: • Unplanned but unforgettable • A careful drive, but worth every curve • Incredible views from mountain to sea • A must-see gem just outside the city If you’re in Oahu and want a break from the beach crowds, Tantalus Lookout is a perfect way to rise above it all—literally.

Kakaʻako Waterfront Park, located on Ala Moana Boulevard, is a picturesque oceanfront park with a promenade and amphitheater. Once a thriving native Hawaiian community known for salt making and fishpond farming, Kakaʻako has evolved into Honolulu's trendiest neighborhood. The park offers opportunities for sunbathing, fishing, and surfing. It also features dog-friendly areas where pets can roam leash-free.
I visited for sunset with some light dinner. Magically, a crew of mostly friendly cats appeared to say hello. They looked well fed with clean coats. They accepted some pettings and watched the sunset with me. (Note for anyone with cat dander allergies!) Plenty of fishing happening along the coastline (many rods with bells, the people were elsewhere). A sunset cruise went by also. Unfortunately, some large black flies appeared so I couldn't snack on my food. Very popular area, many folks stopping for gorgeous sunset photos. Good walking trail. I might have to return to pet the cats, they're much more fun than a cat cafe.

Qianren Z — Google review
My partner and I visited Kaka‘ako Waterfront Park yesterday. The presentation of the park is beautiful—the ocean view is absolutely stunning. This area isn’t exactly a “beach park” but more of a waterfront spot right by the ocean. We noticed that it’s especially popular with locals who come here to surf, boogie board, or even get towed on a board by a boat. There were also many local families and groups celebrating along the shore with food, music, and gatherings, which gave the place a very community feel. We simply laid out a towel on the grass, sat down for about an hour, and just enjoyed the scenery and the sound of the waves. We didn’t swim, though we did see some people bathing near the breakwater area. Personally, the waves looked a bit too strong for me to go in. On the positive side, there was plenty of parking available. However, one thing to be aware of is that the surrounding area felt a little rough, and we noticed some homeless individuals walking around. Overall, it’s a nice spot to relax, enjoy the view, and connect with nature, especially if you’re looking for open space and ocean scenery.

Scenic, stunning ocean and downtown Honolulu skyline views along with the iconic vistas of Diamond Head seemingly protruding up out of the ocean. Seasonal flowers grace the landscape. A place to picnic with members of the entire family. There are picnic tables, bar-b-que grilling facilities and convenient nearby restrooms. Local residents take their refreshing early morning walks, jogs, of bicycle rides along the quite extensive oceanside walkway. Come and enjoy the views and gentle tradewinds.

Super underrated park on the south shore. Way less crowded than Ala Moana and plenty of picnic and shaded bench areas to sit and relax. Flies is an awesome surf break, less crowded than alamoana bowls on the other side of the channel. There are also bathroom facilities and plenty of parking.

One of the best parks on island especially for sunset! It also has tons of friendly stray cats which although it’s a bit sad to see they are well taken care of / fed by the locals! You can also adopt these cats and most are neutered if you are interested

A nice waterfront park where you can walk, run, bike, skate, swim, surf, or just have a nice sit and enjoy the sounds of the surrounding nature. The park could be maintained a bit better as there are areas where trash has accumulated. There are plenty of stray chicken and cats too. The great part is there is a decent amount of parking and it’s free. So if you want to enjoy some near or in ocean time, this is a great area for that.

However, it's important to exercise caution as the location can be dangerous due to slippery rocks and occasional heavy swells.
So wonderful vibe cliff diving spot. Many local guys visit here with music, picnic box, with light wear. This cliff is so good to diving into blue sea. And the wave what hit the cliff is master piece of this place. Music playing and playing, people dive to blue, gorgeous wave hit the cliff with bubble and sounds like thunder..... Can you imagine more perfect diving spot? I absolutely can't!
Micky K — Google review
It is a great spot for watching the sun rise to sun set and has a beautiful diving spot. Be careful though as it usually has big and aggressive waves with no dedicated lifeguard onsite. The parking is also very easy to find for free.
Masoud A — Google review
Great panorama view! The walkway to the cliff has some sand and rock so it is very slippery even I wear hiking shoes but still feel not to secure. The beauty of the scene makes me I look over it. Because it is a site seeing day, so I don't spend long time at China Walls, but it is worth to go and see extraordinary view.
Melissa N — Google review
Awesome spot and phenomenal view of the island! **Dangerous** waves come every few minutes. Easy jump in, not so easy getting out. Read the sign and use caution!!! Never go in the water here alone!¡! Very fun but also literally a deadly location. The waves threw me around and I was sucked under repeatedly. I made it back to the ledge and was slammed against the walls and sucked back out at least 3X. For about a solid minute I genuinely believed I was going to die that day. Google the location before you visit, there have been multiple deaths here.
Joseph B — Google review
China Walls is an amazing place to catch a sunset—look no further! I recommend going down the stairs and going left for the best photos. Go around the cliffs until you walk around a horseshoe-like ledge below the houses. Less people will be in your shot and you'll have awesome angles for the sunset.
Kyle ( — Google review
Amazing place but watch out for those huge waves which could get dangerous if you're not a strong swimmer. No parking nearby as it's on private cul de sac of homes.
Louise B — Google review
Another outstanding place to go jumping in the water, however must be a great swimmer, very rough, I just went to see the sunset and it was spectacular. Highly recommended.
Albert R — Google review
Really chill place! I wish I had brought beers and food and chilled for a while. I didn’t get the idea until I saw others doing it. People were surfing and body boarding and jumping off the cliffs. Great sunset too.

Waiʻalae Beach Park, located 7.4 miles from Honolulu, is a popular oceanfront destination offering a pristine setting for various activities. Visitors can enjoy swimming, sunbathing, picnicking, snorkeling, and walking amidst lush greenery away from the city's hustle and bustle. The park provides amenities such as shade, benches, showers, and restrooms suitable for large groups and individuals with physical disabilities.
This is a lovely and secluded beach, perfect for a relaxing day with family. There are designated areas for picnics, making it easy to enjoy a meal outdoors. The views are stunning, and the sunsets are absolutely breathtaking. A wonderful spot to unwind and take in nature’s beauty!

A calm clean beach with excellent views for sunset. I didn't care for Waikiki beach; however this beach reminded me of those in chill West Maui beach vibes. There were also bench area and picnic tables, as well as a restroom
Jamie — Google review
Love coming here early morning The park is so well taken care of by the city Only a few homeless Not so bad Couple car dwellers but it’s alright I love the accessibility to the beach and the views are amazing. Easy to park and not to busy mid week !
Hillary J — Google review
Pretty mid. Beach looks fairly nice with a little bit of black sand mixed in carved off the rocks around Hunama Bay and China walls. Water is not that clean or friendly to use. River is drainage from golf course and the neighborhoods pollution. Water is just a hundred yards or more of broken coral to walk on. If you want to hang out on the beach, it's okay. If you want to get in the water, skip it.
Christian C — Google review
My husband and I just had our wedding vow renewal ceremony there. It was the perfect backdrop for a wedding. It was perfect for photos, for my dress and the train that the trade winds just naturally took and blew for photo ops, and it was just breathtaking. I am so glad it was all captured on film. I couldn’t be happier about the location.
Carmela L — Google review
Great view, beach sand is a bit more course and has branches, etc all over. Beach itself is a bit rocky but you can walk pretty far out without being submerged so some might like it for that.
Jahnoi A — Google review
Nice quiet, uncrowded beach located in a residential neighborhood. I guess very few tourists know about this place. The water is calm and the shoreline is shallow so it is the perfect family spot. The kids will enjoy themselves, swimming, sand toys, and snorkeling. Coarse sand and a few rocks sprinkled in so be careful wading and wear beach shoes. Decent shower facilities and rest rooms. There are a few shaded picnic tables along the grassy field adjacent to the beach. Limited amount of free parking. There is a sign saying don’t leave your valuables in the car, so be warned.
Henry C — Google review
A nice small beach away from the busy Waikiki beach. We like to come to this beach for a lunch picnic. No stores, shops, or vendors at this beach so bring your own snacks. There's a small free parking lot that can be tough at times to find a parking spot. There's a typical park building (nothing fancy) with restroom, changing area, and shower to rinse off. There's also an outside fresh water rinse off and 5 picnic tables in a row under the shade from a tree growing on a trellis overhead. The beach is a mix of sandy and some rocks. Nice beach just not the fine sand. Every time we've been here there's less than 10 people on the beach or swimming. Nice beach if you don't like crowds...

Queen Kapiʻolani Garden is a tropical garden located near the Waikiki Zoo in Honolulu. It features well-maintained walking paths surrounded by a variety of plants, shrubs, trees, and flowers. The garden hosts free concerts, festivals, and sporting events and is also the finishing point for the Honolulu Marathon. Visitors can enjoy 'Art On The Fence' on weekends by the backside of the zoo.
A cute *little* park that is walking distance from the beach and the main strip of hotels in Waikiki. When I saw it late summer, it was not super manicured and it's quite small, but it had a few varieties of my favorite flower: HIBISCUS!!! For this reason, and the chickens walking around, I loved it.
Imaan — Google review
Tiny but cute park near Kapi’olani Park and the zoo with an assortment of flora that will make you feel even more thankful to be in Hawaii. It is quite small, so much that you could extensively explore the entire garden in 5 minutes, but it is certainly a nice spot to stumble upon on your way to or from another destination. My favorite part is the little gazebo covered in vines and flowers in the center!
Ben R — Google review
The Queen Kapiolani Garden is located in the Kapiolani Regional Park, between Montsarrat, Paki and Leahi avenues in Waikiki, Oahu. The garden is also called 'Queen Kapiolani Rose and Hibiscus Garden' for its collections of those magnificent flowers. Hawaii is famous for its hibiscus, which was declared the state flower in 1988. This spectacular botanical garden features an outstanding collection of these sweet-smelling, colorful flowers, as well as a nice selection of roses. Opened in 1972, the garden and adjacent park once belonged to King David Kalakaua who donated the land for public use in 1877. He named the 133-acre park in honor of his wife, Queen Kapiolani.
Doug H — Google review
This quiet low key garden, which is situated adjacent to the well-known Kapiolani Park and behind the Honolulu Zoo, boasts a unique character of it's own. The approach to this garden is one of my favorite, roadway and walking paths, elegantly lined with Monkey Pod trees. Today, May 28th, 2024, I woke up with a resolution. It began with an interesting thought along with a compelling set of questions, which I was intent upon investigating. So, Queen Kapi'olani is one of Hawai'I's famous, beloved queens. After all, a large, well-known park, which sits at the foot of Diamond Head, carries her name. And, adjacent to this park, is a less well-known, but beautiful garden, which is named after this locally beloved, popular queen. I believe, the queen would be honored to know of the vegetation and beautiful flowers, which adorn this quiet, relaxing, somewhat removed garden.
Ken K — Google review
There’s a beautiful flowering tree at the center of the park that blooms with vibrant yellow flowers each summer. I proposed to my girlfriend under the tree so this park will always have a special meaning for us. The garden itself is small, but lush and private. There are many plants and hens with chicks during spring. I’d highly recommend taking a stroll through the garden if you’re walking by.
Adam L — Google review
We love stopping by this gorgeous mature and lush garden everytime we are on the island of Oahu. It's definitely nostalgic for my husband and I, considering we first came here many years ago on our honeymoon. Views of Diamond Head surround the area. If you have been to Oahu, and not yet strolled through here, you are truly missing out. The garden even smells like paradise. Flowers and birds everywhere; even a wild chicken here and there too, alongside some of the most fascinating trees you will lay eyes on. Seriously, take some time out of your stay on this beautiful island, and go here. Literally smell the flowers along the way, and take in the clean fresh air. This garden never disappoints. 🌺

Queen Kapiʻolani Garden is a wonderful tropical garden near the zoo in Honolulu. The garden is well maintained with easy walking paths. There are many plants, shrubs, trees, and flowers to see. On this visit, we spotted an Egret, and it was not shy. It seemed to follow us along our visit as though it were an old feathered friend. Maunalua Bay Beach Park, located across from the Hawaii Kai shopping center, is a popular spot for various activities such as diving, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and picnicking. While some may not actually hit the sand or water here, it's known for offering epic views of Oahu sunsets. The park features a boat ramp and a large parking lot with easy access to the water.
It’s such a peaceful place and perfect for going out to the ocean by boat. It’s also a wonderful spot for kayaking.

I mean, it’s a beach in Hawaii so it’s hard to give it less than that, but it was the rockiest of all the beaches I went to during my week on Oahu. It’s a real locals spot and not the place to go surfing, but if you want a chill day in some calm waters with some stunning views, Maunalua Bay has it.

This is a great beach and it’s rarely crowded. The views are great as well with lush in the background and volcanic on the other side. This is one of the best places on the island to watch the sunset from. Breathtaking.

Practically had the entire beach to ourselves. Warm sands and nice breeze. The surf and waves are thrashing. Be prepared for a workout swimming in the water. Watch out for the rocky areas. Surf crashes up and will sweep an adult away.

All I can say is this is one of the best beaches on the island. Water was amazing. The sand felt like you were walking on carpet. The drive from Wakiki Beach was very scenic. Amazing visit to the beach.

Place is nice n clean, its more of a park than a beach. Good for get togethers, BBQ or just to hangout n enjoy the scenery.. The bay itself have numerous watersports like canoeing, jetsking, kayaking, surfing, snorkeling, parasailing etc...by businesses operating from the marinas. However, the highlight of this beach park and the reason i go there besides some fishing is because I believe this is the only place during low tide that you can walk out pretty far out onto the reefs that are mostly made up of sand. I've even seen people walk with their dogs out there. Its Awesome!

Always a nice view. Not a great place to swim or sunbathe, but great to have lunch or just enjoy the atmosphere. Birds seem to be looking for food handouts, so some have gotten a bit overly friendly, but they are ready to ignore if you don't like them.

Mākālei Beach Park is a hidden gem located just 5.2 miles from Honolulu, nestled between the bustling Diamond Head and Waikiki beaches. This charming oceanside park features a small beach favored by surfers and offers shaded picnic areas under lush trees, making it an ideal spot for relaxation away from the crowds. The pristine stretch of white sand and crystal-clear waters surrounded by vibrant greenery creates a serene atmosphere that invites visitors to unwind in nature's embrace.
A nice and quiet beach park that is located in the middle of the residential area. Seaside of the park is a pathway going down right will have a small beachside in front of the residential houses. There is a washing station up in the green area so you may wash off the sands. It is relatively quiet so it seems to be a nice place for a picnic under the trees looking at the beach or you may go into the sand and enjoy the water.

A very small strip of sand next to billion dollar homes. It has a nice view of Diamond Head and Waikiki as well. We were there on Wednesday and there were about 20 beachgoers and a couple of dogs. The wave was gentle, but windy on the day we were there. It warrants a 5* but for its lack of parking. It had no services nearby, but it’s pretty close to Waikiki. There’s a pretty walkway right on top of the water that takes you yon the next park (also no bathroom or parking).

State park
Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is a stunning state park on Oahu, known for its sandy beach and excellent snorkeling opportunities. The bay features a coral reef and an education center, making it a marine sanctuary with vibrant marine life. Visitors must watch an entry video before accessing the park and beach areas. The crescent-shaped beach is protected by cliffs and offers beautiful coral beds, colorful fish, and other fascinating marine creatures.
I got a say, I was nervous about parking for Hanauma Bay, however, it wasn't as bad as people say. First off the parking does not open until 7am and the line starts on the shoulder before you even come up to the entrance. We arrived at 645 and hung out at the lookout just past the entrance until 7. Then we went back and it was easy and plenty of parking was available. Now for the Cove. Outstanding!! The staff gives you a video of where the undercurrents are and where to avoid. The water was so clear and even for my non-snorkeling people there were plenty of fish close to shore swimming around them. The only time it seemed over crowded was checking out gear. It probably took 45 min, so bring your own gear. If I ever come back, I will definitely be going to Hanauma Bay.
Michelle B — Google review
Tickets sell out online crazy fast, so my family tried our luck at showing up in the morning to get in. We arrived around 8:15 am and were able to get tickets for a 10:30 am entry time, but were actually let in around 8:45/9 am. After being let in, you are required to stand in several other lines for no apparent reason, which gave the air of an amusement park and damped the experience. There was also an exhibit about the park’s wildlife but we were shooed right passed it to stand in yet another line. We were then supposed to watch a video detailing safe practices in the park but the projector was broken, so a volunteer who sounded bored with his life delivered a brief and haphazard talk instead. All that being said, the park is truly breathtaking to behold. Just gorgeous. As a coral reef ecologist, I found the snorkeling to be a bit underwhelming due to the lack of coral (there is some but it is sparse). There was a great diversity and abundance of fish though, which was nice. My three non-scientist family members really really enjoyed it and thought the snorkeling was epic! We only spent about an hour snorkeling because the water was so cold (about 75 degrees at the beginning of February). There are facilities to shower and change in, which we took advantage of. There is also an on-site snack bar, which was decent but nothing to write home about. Overall, a good experience, but $25 per person to snorkel seems a bit steep (plus more if you need to rent gear). It is going to a good cause I suppose…
Sarah L — Google review
Hanauma Bay is gorgeous. But even though you have to make reservations, we waited over an hour to get to the beach. And there’s still a lot of people. You can read the details on our web page…But you’ll see colorful fish as soon as you enter the water. And if you’re lucky, you might see a seal on the beach!
Workingfamily T — Google review
Reservation is strongly recommended. Walk in is possible. We went there 6:40am as walking without reservation. Got in around 8:45. Great place to visit with kids and family.

Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay was absolutely incredible! We saw so many colorful tropical fish, and they swam right up to us — it felt like being inside an aquarium. The water was calm and crystal clear, perfect for exploring. We really appreciated the Bay’s focus on education and preservation. Learning about the delicate ecosystem and how visitors can help protect it made the experience even more meaningful. It’s wonderful to see such care taken to maintain the natural beauty of this place. Snorkeling gear, umbrellas, beach chairs, and lockers are all available to rent, which made the day easy and enjoyable. This experience is truly a treasure and worth every penny — a must-visit for anyone coming to Oʻahu!

Be there early (7:30am), otherwise it is full and you won't get a shady place. The max capacity is limited. Before entering you will have to watch a short video about the rules in the bay.

Located in the picturesque Manoa Valley, Mānoa Heritage Center spans 3.5 acres and serves as an immersive educational space dedicated to preserving Hawaii's rich natural and cultural legacy. The center is home to Kukaoo Heiau, an ancient temple linked to the Menehune, as well as a diverse array of native Hawaiian plants and Polynesian-introduced gardens.
Stunning! The views and everything was beautiful and mesmerizing. Couldn't get enough of the beauty here, just wow! You can drive through the botanical free of charge. Just remember to respect the rules and beauty of the land. If you're not a local, it's best to rent a rental for the day instead of paying an uber, this way, you can also visit the near by beaches and drive the island.

A Hidden Treasure in Mānoa! My tour at the Mānoa Heritage Center was absolutely amazing! The grounds are stunning—filled with native Hawaiian plants like the beautiful ʻōhiʻa lehua, which I especially appreciated as someone who practices lei making. Walking through the gardens felt deeply inspiring, like reconnecting with the roots of our island traditions. The history of the property was fascinating. Seeing old photos of Mānoa and hearing how the land was transformed gave me such a deep appreciation for this place and the people who care for it. As a special treat, we were offered fresh-picked ʻulu, juicy mountain apple, and a refreshing cool cup of tea at the end. The groundskeeper was so warm, welcoming, and knowledgeable—it truly felt like visiting extended ʻohana. If you're looking for something meaningful, peaceful, and rich with Hawaiian culture, this tour is an absolute must. I’ll carry the mana of this experience with me in every lei I make.
