1Mānoa Falls Trail

Hiking area
Mānoa Falls Trail is a popular rainforest trail located just a short drive from Waikiki. This picturesque 1.6-mile hike leads to the stunning 150-foot Mānoa Falls, which has been featured in movies like Jurassic Park and Lost due to its lush green backdrop. The trail offers an easy and kid-friendly trek through native Hawaiian plants and bamboo forests, making it a favorite for visitors looking for beautiful photo opportunities.
To check off a must-do adventure in Honolulu, my wife and I planned a morning hike on the Manoa Falls Trail, and it was such a treat! We researched this one well in advance, wanting an easy, fun hike that would let us soak in Hawaii’s stunning nature. Just a quick 20-minute Uber ride from our Waikiki hotel, the trail was super easy to find, with clear signs pointing us toward the waterfall. The round trip is under 2 miles, but heads-up—it can get a bit slippery and wet, especially since it rains often. Luckily, we had dry weather, which made the trek even more enjoyable. The hike itself was a total delight, winding through a lush forest with towering trees, vibrant native flowers, and plants that made us feel completely immersed in Hawaii’s natural beauty. Every step felt like a little escape into paradise, with greenery all around and the fresh scent of the forest. The payoff at the end was the Manoa Falls, Hawaii’s tallest waterfall, and it was absolutely worth it—just breathtaking! We spent some time taking it all in before heading back, snapping photos and savoring the peaceful vibe. This was the perfect morning adventure, leaving us plenty of time to relax at Waikiki Beach for the rest of the day. Our tip: skip renting a car and just take an Uber to the trailhead—it’s hassle-free and super convenient. The Manoa Falls Trail was everything we hoped for—simple, scenic, and a beautiful way to connect with Hawaii’s natural charm. Big thanks to this trail for making our trip extra special!

Flora, Fauna and Views The trail is distinguished by an impressive biodiversity, which delights visitors with a wide variety of plants and wildlife. Although the waterfall had no water during my visit, the panoramic views that are revealed along the way are spectacular and undoubtedly compensate for the absence of water, making the tour totally worth it. The Rise and the Adventure I decided to venture higher, a 25-minute stretch that is characterized by a dense presence of bamboo and roots that cover the road. This section of the trail offers an additional challenge and a feeling of total immersion in the forest. I chose to return because of the time, but the experience of exploring this higher part was very rewarding. Conclusion In summary, the trail is an excellent choice for nature lovers. It combines an accessible walk with stunning views and the opportunity to explore a rich biodiversity. It is a place that I would definitely visit again to complete the tour.

Beautiful short trail — I really enjoyed it! Once you reach the falls, if you’re up for a little extra challenge, there’s another trail that leads to a stunning lookout. Highly recommend taking it if you have the time, energy, and want a bit more adventure. Overall, my experience was very good. Definitely recommend coming early though — after a certain time it gets pretty crowded, and the peaceful nature vibe fades with all the conversations and people playing music on speakers. Still, it’s a must-do trail in Honolulu and absolutely worth the visit.

Absolutely STUNNING walk to the "falls". You must understand, unless you go during rainy season, you're lucky if you see a steady stream. When I went, there was barely a trickle. However, don't discount the trek there. It is absolutely beautiful. I would highly suggest wearing taller socks and hiking boots as this trail is quite muddy. Beautiful photo opportunities all around.
Casey N — Google review
A beautiful, easy, one-hour round trip hike with beautiful natural surroundings. It only drizzle a little, but it was enough to make the route a little muddy, so you should walk carefully on some steep areas along the trail. While the hike itself is great, we were unlucky on this visit as the waterfall was nearly dry. Probably going after a recent rain will be the best chance to see the falls at its fullest.
Bruno D — Google review
Gorgeous place. But when we went at the end of September the waterfall was very tiny. The saddest waterfall I’ve seen. Hike was easy - moderate intensity. Moderate due to slippery conditions but most people will find it easy. No swimming allowed due to bacteria unfortunately, can’t even approach the waterfall. During the hike you see signs to another harder trail, which I didn’t do.
Olesia P — Google review
Nice trail to hike on. There were lots of other hikers on the trail too. Many resting spots for taking break. It was humid making the hike harder than it should be but still a nice hike. Dress appropriately and be prepared to sweat a lot. Advisable to bring some water too.
Doua M — Google review
This place was fine, but the end water fall was a bit of a letdown. I've seen bigger. The restroom is in the Snack Shack just before the trail, but please be respectful and don't trek mud into the premises. Also don't clean shoes in their sinks. It might be wet so bring either a hat, poncho, umbrella to counter the rain. Bring something to repel mosquitos because those suckers are RUTHLESS. There was a sign saying the water is dirty and can carry diseases. Must bring hiking shoes that are waterproof if you want a smoother trek. The ground has lots of puddles if it's raining.

Diamond Head is an iconic volcanic peak in Oahu, offering hiking trails and historical military fortifications. Visitors can enjoy dinner cruises near the crater, witnessing breathtaking sunsets over the Pacific Ocean. During winter, passengers may also spot humpback whales on their annual migration. Oahu's lush landscapes and crystal-clear waters make it a cherished destination for travelers seeking unforgettable experiences.
Very easy hike but great views when you get to the top. It has 360-views of the beaches, the city and the ocean itself. It can get crowded up there so you will have to wait for your turn to take photos. I would suggest going for an early session and try to catch the sunrise there!!
Masoud A — Google review
Did this with our 4 year old and found it to be a relatively easy hike. We went through a lot of the tracks so it felt worthwhile. It is easy to get to but I would not say the views are the best, the Makapuʻu Lighthouse trail had better outlooks, but it is still definitely worth doing. Just make sure you book early as reservations are required.
Allen S — Google review
We rolled up for the hike around 7:30 AM on a Saturday, and that was definitely the magic hour because parking was a breeze—tons of spots still open right in the crater. The hike itself is a great morning workout. It’s slightly strenuous but totally manageable. You definitely feel the incline and those famous stairs toward the end are a bit of a quad-burner, but just take your time. Once you get through the tunnel and scramble up to the lookout, the effort is instantly worth it. The payoff at the top is just insane. The panoramic view of Waikiki, the deep blue ocean, and the whole coastline is absolutely breathtaking. It’s the perfect reward for the climb. We were coming back down right as the crowds were really starting to pour in, so seriously, lock in that early-morning slot. It's the best way to start your day on O'ahu!
Pavan A — Google review
A moderate but rewarding hike! Make sure to bring plenty of water 💧. The hike takes about 1.5–2.5 hours, and don’t forget—you need to reserve online. The view from the top is absolutely breathtaking, totally worth the effort! 🌄⛰️

Hiked the Diamond Head Summit Trail — 1.6 miles roundtrip, 560-ft climb, and amazing views of Waikiki, Honolulu & the ocean! Trail’s paved with stairs, so wear good shoes. Go early, bring water & sunscreen. Entry $5/person or $10/vehicle. Totally worth it!
Pragya G — Google review
What an amazing place to go. Get your reservations early and go early in the morning because it does warm up and it will take you a while to walk it if you choose to walk the whole way to the top. It’s amazing part of history and if you’re there have encouraged you to take the time and go.
Dave W — Google review
Diamond Head, known as Lēʻahi in Hawaiian, is one of Oʻahu’s most iconic landmarks and a must-visit for travelers seeking both history and breathtaking views. This volcanic tuff cone, formed over 300,000 years ago, offers a moderately challenging hike that rewards visitors with a sweeping panorama of Honolulu, Waikīkī Beach, and the deep blue Pacific Ocean. The trail is well-maintained but includes steep staircases and a few narrow tunnels, so comfortable shoes and water are essential. Along the way, interpretive signs share the crater’s geological and military history, adding depth to the experience. Photographers will find endless opportunities, from capturing the unique crater walls to sunrise or sunset vistas from the summit. Whether for the exercise, the scenery, or the sense of standing atop one of Hawaii’s most famous natural wonders, Diamond Head is an unforgettable highlight of any trip to Oʻahu. --- To get on top of Diamond Head: Start at the Diamond Head State Monument Entrance Located in Honolulu, about a 10-minute drive from Waikiki. Parking is available for a small fee, but spaces can fill up quickly, so arrive early in the morning. You can also walk or take TheBus from Waikiki if you don’t have a car. Pay the Entrance Fee There’s a modest entrance fee for hikers (separate from vehicle parking). Payment kiosks accept credit cards. Begin the Hike The trail is about 1.3 km (0.8 miles) one way, with a 171 m (560 ft) elevation gain. Expect an uneven dirt path, stairs, and narrow tunnels. Follow the Switchbacks The hike starts gently but becomes steeper as you climb. There are several switchbacks that help manage the elevation gain. Navigate the Stairs and Tunnel Near the top, you’ll face a steep staircase, a 70 m (230 ft) dimly lit tunnel, and another spiral staircase. Reach the Summit Lookout At the top, you’ll find a restored military bunker and panoramic views of Waikiki, the Pacific Ocean, and the island’s coastline. Bring water, sun protection, and a camera — there’s little shade. Descent Go back the way you came, watching your step on the steep sections.
Paul P — Google review
Fun must see tourist attraction. The hike isn’t particularly difficult as it is paved the whole way but it has quite an incline and many steps at the top. If you aren’t used to hiking you may need to take a few breaks but there are some nice scenic spots along the way to do so. We had no issue making parking reservations online the same day Labor Day weekend.

Manoa Falls is a renowned 150-foot waterfall located in the Manoa Valley, just a short drive from downtown Honolulu and Waikiki. The trail to the falls winds through a lush rainforest, offering stunning tropical vegetation and an arboretum. This popular hike is accessible to hikers of all ages and experience levels, making it perfect for families. The well-kept trail spans less than two miles round trip, providing an easy stroll through the picturesque Manoa Valley.
Definitely glad I brought hiking shoes possible without but slippery. The accent was tolerable maybe work if out of shape or little kids. Beautiful scenery and definitely one of my favorite waterfalls in Hawaii so far. Nice little swimming hole and places to rest. Fun family hike be patient as the forest keeps the trail wet.
Jon S — Google review
The falls were a bit dry today since there hasn't been much rain but still worth the treck. The whole trail of rain forest is beautiful and and full of native flora and fauna. My mom has arthritis in her knees so it was kind of tough for her to go up through the trails since there are steep steps, slippery muddy trail and uneven rocks but totally worth it!
Roselyne F — Google review
Everybody told us what an amazing place this was and to be honest with you. It was just average. If you wanna go for a muddy hike only to find out that the pool at the bottom of the waterfall is not allowed to swim in this is your place. Having said that it is a gorgeous hike if that’s what you’re looking for.
Darryl S — Google review
Manoa Falls is absolutely stunning and a must see if you’re visiting Oahu. The hike is relatively easy and winds through a lush tropical rainforest that feels like something out of a movie. The scenery is breathtaking from towering bamboo groves to huge ferns and vibrant green foliage everywhere you look. The trail is well maintained and accessible for most people though it can get muddy so wear good shoes. The waterfall at the end is the real payoff cascading down nearly 150 feet into a serene pool. It’s peaceful refreshing and totally worth the walk. Whether you’re a nature lover or just looking for a great adventure close to Honolulu this place is unforgettable
S K — Google review
The Hike was challenging for me and I almost quit. Two beautiful soul ladies gave me the motivation to keep going. The fall was beautiful and the water while it was cold it was refreshing ♥️
Adrienne W — Google review
Really lovely hike. Because it’s an easy one it’s quite busy. You need sturdy shoes as there are rocks, mud and puddles and try to find good mosquitoe repellent. Mine didn’t work and got bitten all over. Have water too, it’s pretty toasty and humid on the trail. Parking was half price for us due to being military.
Adriana Y — Google review
Easy hike but unfortunately the time we went there was not enough rain that month so there was only a little trickle of water at the falls.
Perla ( — Google review
Beautiful hike! There is a paid parking lot at the entrance, and I recommend bringing mosquito repellent — you’ll need it! The trail goes uphill and can get quite muddy, so wear proper shoes. Some rocks along the way are slippery, so be cautious. At the end, you’ll reach a gorgeous waterfall. There is a sign warning not to approach too closely as it can be dangerous — but many people do get closer to enjoy the view. Overall, a great hike surrounded by lush Hawaiian vegetation, mostly shaded, making it perfect for a hot day. Would definitely recommend!

Makapu‘u Point Lighthouse Trail offers a natural hiking experience with a well-maintained paved trail, providing stunning ocean views and the potential for whale-watching. The trail leads to an observation deck with breathtaking views of the historic Makapuu Lighthouse, perched on a rocky cliffside overlooking the turquoise sea.
The hardest part about this hike is the fact that the trail is not shaded. It’s paved all the way but completely exposed. Bring plenty on water for it and for the love of god, don’t bring pets. The pavement gets incredibly hot. I’ve seen people carrying a massive golden doodle as the poor thing could not walk anymore due to the heat.
Adriana Y — Google review
This trail is paved the whole way which is perfect for a trail to bring young ones on. This trail also doesn’t have much shade so make sure to wear lots of sunscreen or come early. Viewpoint at the end of the trail is beautiful with views of the ocean and the lighthouse. Round trip was 2.65 miles and 525 feet elevation gain. Parking can fill up fast.
Jason W — Google review
Awesome paved trail! Pretty steep incline especially for the first half of the trail, but after that it levels out a bit. Also for much of the hike you get the strong winds from the sea breeze which feels amazing! Views from the mountain down to the shore are great from certain parts. Sadly the trail down to the lighthouse is closed, but they have a great viewing spot to see it. Overall, great accessible trail
Colson K — Google review
Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail is one of Oahu’s most scenic and enjoyable hikes. The paved path makes it accessible for most visitors, and the panoramic views of the coastline, offshore islands, and deep blue Pacific are absolutely breathtaking. The historic red-roofed lighthouse adds a picturesque touch and a glimpse into Hawaii’s maritime past. It’s a well-maintained trail that perfectly combines natural beauty, history, and tranquility—a must-visit for anyone exploring the island.
Joshua K — Google review
Fantastic place to go for views, historic sites and even whale watching! There are some rocky tidal pools at the bottom of the cliffs and I saw people in them, but I was not sure how to get to them. The views of the Hawaiian East Shore (Oahu) are unbeatable! Bring water and good shoes. Hiking is on blacktop, so it gets real warm, real fast! We didn’t see any whales, but there was a portly gal wearing blue about midway up and that was close enough. Felt like 5 miles up and two miles back, but the park says it’s under a mile… :/ Have fun!
Luke — Google review
We did this trail with our 4-year-old, so it took us a little longer, but it was still very doable. We caught the bus and then walked about 15 minutes from Sea Life Park to reach the base. It’s a fun, steady walk and the views at the top are absolutely worth it, honestly even better than Diamond Head!
Allen S — Google review
8/15/2025 We went to Makapu‘u Point Lighthouse Trail, that offers an unforgettable blend of panoramic vistas, gentle ocean breezes, and easy accessibility, making it a standout destination on O‘ahu’s southeastern coastline. This paved trail, stretching roughly two miles round trip, welcomes hikers of all skill levels, including families with children and casual walkers. As you ascend gradually along the volcanic slopes, you’re treated to sweeping views of the sapphire Pacific and windward islets, with the iconic red-roofed lighthouse perched dramatically atop the promontory. The path is exposed to the sun, so visitors should come prepared with water and sun protection, but the rewards are manifold: from wintertime whale watching to glimpses of distant Moloka‘i, every bend reveals a new aspect of Hawaii’s natural beauty. The trail’s ease of access, coupled with interpretive signs and resting viewpoints, ensures both education and relaxation. Whether you seek a brisk morning workout, a family outing, or a meditative stroll above crashing waves, the Makapu‘u Point Lighthouse Trail delivers a quintessential island experience that’s both invigorating and restorative.
Lesa R — Google review
Breathtaking views both going up and coming down—well worth the visit for the history, fun, and the chance to experience the island. If this is your first time, I recommend bringing water and wearing comfortable shoes based on your fitness level. The trail is steep but fully paved, leading up above the lighthouse. Pace yourself, and don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and possibly a hat—if the sun is out, you’ll thank me later! Parking is limited, but you can usually find spots along the entrance road leading to the trail.

Lanikai Pillbox Trail, also known as Kawai Ridge, is a popular 2-mile roundtrip hike in Kailua, Oahu. The trail offers stunning panoramic views of Lanikai Beach, Kaneohe Bay, Chinamans Hat, and Waimanalo. It features two military bunkers from World War II and is a favorite among locals for its challenging yet rewarding ascent above the beautiful beach.
The trail itself is great! No parking at the trail head so we parked at Lanikai Beach and walked 0.6 miles to the trail head. The trail was dusty so a little slippery but the rock, roots, and ropes made the initial incline doable. Some flat open spaces with fantastic breezes were much appreciated after the rock scrambles. Take sunscreen, water and some snacks and enjoy a little break at the top of the pillboxes.
Tiffany T — Google review
Did this hike with our 4 year old and it was a great experience, though a bit more technical than some others since there are no railings. It was still manageable, just take your time especially on the way down. A lovely local even helped us along the way which made it easier. Easy to reach by bus and afterwards we went to the nearby beach to relax for the rest of the day. Super fun overall!
Allen S — Google review
Amazing views and trail but just a warning there is no shade at all during this hike and some parts are not very safe and there is alot of loose rocks and dirt. Be very careful walking. There are places you will basically have to climb so wear good shoes and make sure quite fit! Parking is limited to nearby roads but it sup super quick
Melzy P — Google review
Not sure what we were getting into, got there early and found street parking available. It is limited, so make sure you follow the parking guidelines. It was dark when we arrived, had to use our phones to see (recommend bring head lamps). If you’re not a true hiker, trail is challenging. My wife made it about 1/2 way up and said that was it, I made it to the top and it is a spectacular view and sunrise was beautiful. Regardless if you make it to the top, my wife said the views were also as wonderful. Make sure you have good shoes if you decide to adventure up.
Craig M — Google review
The Lanikai Pillbox Hike is an unforgettable experience that’s full of those classic Hawai’i vibes with breathtaking ocean views, turquoise waters, and lush greenery everywhere you look. The trail itself isn’t long, it’s a pretty steep incline most of the way up, and definitely not an easy stroll. It’s best for those who are comfortable with hiking and can stably walk and climb. There’s no wheelchair or stroller access, so it’s not the right trail for everyone. Parking can be a bit of a challenge since there’s no official lot. Most people end up parking in the nearby residential areas or even down by Lanikai Beach, which means a bit of a walk uphill before you even start the hike. Just be super mindful of the local neighborhood but don’t block driveways and respect the homes around you. Overall highly recommended this hike if you are able! That said, once you make it to the top, the views are absolutely worth it. You’ll get a stunning panoramic look at the ocean, the Mokulua Islands, and the coastline below. It’s one of those hikes where the reward totally matches the effort, and the scenery at the top feels like a postcard brought to life.
Ms S — Google review
My husband and I read reviews for this hike and were assured by our Uber driver, Tommy, that it was “easy as shit!” Well, Tommy… I’ve got some news. I consider myself semi-active, but I still managed to walk away with a bloody knee and the self-esteem of a turnip after a three-legged dog passed us—not once, but twice. That said, this hike is an absolute MUST-DO! Go early, take your time, and prepare to be blown away by the views. Everyone on the trail was so supportive and encouraging—it felt like we were all in it together. If you spot the three-legged dog, don’t let his smug little trot get in your head. Rumor has it he does the trail a few times a week. 😅 All jokes aside, the views are phenomenal, the vibe is awesome, and it’s worth every slippery step. Just wear shoes with good grip—my old tennis shoes didn’t quite cut it on the way down. Add it to your list when visiting Hawai’i! 🌺🏝️
Meredith L — Google review
Strongly recommend; wonderful short hike with phenomenal views! One of the best for the amount of effort to get to the top for the views you get. Both pillboxes are great, and you could follow the ridge further but the best view is from the pillboxes. Personally I find the hike easy but if you don’t exercise or hike regularly consider it moderate because some folks may find the steep ascent, loose rocks (or mud if it rained), and no shade challenging. For gear it’ll depend on fitness levels; but I usually wear hiking shoes and carry a bottle of water and I’m good. Others might need more water, sun screen, a hat, or poles for mobility. You’ll also see people do the hike in slippers or running shoes, which is fine unless it rains. Then it’s a muddy mess.

Went with 5 people but only 2 of us were able to complete the hike. There was a lot of incline but the view was really nice. You would have to park by the neighborhoods.

Hiking Trails
The Koko Crater Railway Trailhead offers a challenging yet rewarding hike up an abandoned railroad track, featuring stunning ocean and city views. Originally built for transporting supplies during World War II, the railway has now been repurposed as a hiking trail leading to old military bunkers. Known for its grueling 1,048 steps that ascend 1,200 feet above the Hawaii Kai residential area and Hanauma Bay, this trail provides a test of endurance and mental strength.
This hike is so worth it! It’s over 1000 steps so definitely a stair-master workout but the view at the top is stunning. Take it slow and bring lots of water. It took us less than half an hour to get to the top and about 10-15 minutes getting down and we spent about an hour admiring the views at the top. We did it right before sunset which I highly recommend as the heat is much more bearable at this time compared to earlier

A must when you visit Oahu! Definitely recommend doing for sunrise to avoid heat and to see beautiful views as the sun goes up!! Most people take 30-45 mins to go up but budget an hour up just in case! The hike itself isn’t hard, it’s just the quick elevation gain!! Take your time, but no matter what, push through and make it to the top! It’s so worth it. Bring water and go to the bathroom beforehand. I’ve seen people throw up on the way and take over an hour to go up, but I’ve also seen people sprinting it 5 times in row within 2 hours. Seen people do it in the nicest hokas and seen people do it barefoot. Just listen to your body and full send it;) there are pillboxes up top and you can even go down the ridges if you’d like just be careful. Parking is free and there are also free bathrooms a little below the parking.

Best to go early in the morning to beat the heat! This is not a beginner trail — watch your step (literally) as you climb about 1,048 steep steps to the top. 🥵 Expect the hike to take 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes, depending on your pace. The view at the summit is absolutely worth every step. Bring plenty of water and take your time — you’ll earn that view! 🌄⛰️💪💦
Glenn G — Google review
Good hike, roughly 1.5 miles to the summit and back but that incline is no joke. Stairs to the summit are in good condition but I wouldn’t attempt it if it’s raining, there is a section with signs posted not to use it even though most people still do. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and water or at least make sure you’re properly hydrated

This was an awesome hike for my husband and I to accomplish. I will say it's not an easy hike it's moderate. Make sure that you bring water and when you get to the top, take a break you're going to need it! I ended up getting to the top without breaks during the climb but everyone's fitness level varies. Enjoy this because the pictures and views from the top makes this climb worth every step!
Kecia A — Google review
Make sure you have comfortable shoes and lots of water. The trail is definitely a challenge, especially for those who don't hike often. I also recommend sunscreen, and a hat. Besides that it's amazing and getting to the top its like a cherry on top. Great for workout and confidence boost.

Nice hike straight uphill with barely any shade. There is a part that the ones with fear of heights may not like very much. Recommended to wear good shoes and best to go early before it is hot. We went in the afternoon right when there wasn’t any shade. That made the trail more challenging so just in case if anyone is looking to enhanced their hike.

Great hike!! Definitely challenging but the views are worth it 🙌🏽 I saw many different levels of challenge for people. Some were running it like nothing and others were making their way up slowly. 10/10 recommend but probably not the best for young children

Lulumahu Falls is a hidden gem in Oahu, accessible via an unofficial and unmarked trail that takes hikers through a bamboo forest and across a stream. Despite previous restrictions, permits are now issued for this hike by the Honolulu Board of Water Supply. The 2.5-mile round-trip trail offers a mix of beginner-friendly terrain and rewarding sights such as a 50-foot waterfall, secret ruins, and lush rainforest scenery.
This was one of our favorite spots during our trip. We ventured out there twice taking different trails each way and exploring all around! My husband and I even danced in the bamboo forest to our favorite song it was magical. The falls were gorgeous but slippery so be very careful. We wore hiking shoes and clothes over our swimsuits the first time the next time we went we wore water shoes and just our swimsuits and brought water. The less you bring the better! We had no trouble finding a parking spots when we went but there is limited parking.

We hiked this in April. It had been raining most days leading up to this, and we actually got rained on while hiking it. It was a beautiful hike though and I love that the waterfall area was swimable. Not too crowded, with free parking. It gets a bit steep near the last part, with some boulders to climb over, and trail wasn't completely obvious at times.
DD H — Google review
It’s a nice hike, but…The trails can be a bit confusing and slippery in some spots, definitely wear good grippy shoes, and be prepared for mud with any recent amount of rain. There was also one trail towards the back end of the falls that went straight up the side of the steep incline and then basically ended. I turned some kids around who were walking that way because it was truly treacherous in that spot at least. Other than that, it was a pretty decent moderate to challenging hike, which wound back and forth across the water several times, so if you go, wear good water/hiking shoes that you’re not afraid to get wet! We hiked in with a backpack with water and a small picnic lunch, which we enjoyed by the falls which were very pretty and refreshingly cool as well. It’s about 2-3 miles in total depending on how much you switch back and forth as you hike.
Meghan S — Google review
You do need a permit for this hike! Even though it has been raining (not hard or a lot though) days leading up to this hike (its Hawaii it rains everyday lol) it was not overly muddy and we did not find it too difficult to hike or follow the trail with our 1.5 year old and our 3.5 year old (who hiked the whole thing himself!). Warning ⚠️ a woman there told us large rocks fall down from the top of the waterfall so despite how beautiful it is you might not want to stand right under the falls.
Tara B — Google review
This one was fun, a nice bamboo forest, graffiti’d bunker, open field, and a good sized waterfall. Everything you could ask for in a Hawaii hike. Somehow we got lost, and apparently that’s not uncommon. We ran into some other folks that were lost but it’s very easy to find where you need to go once you realize you’re off trail. Download an offline map on all trails if you’re worried about running in circles. Waters deep enough to swim in, fun rocks to climb on. Lovely spot, not obnoxiously crowded either.
Lee S — Google review
A great hike through a bamboo forest, possibly a Hollywood set, and up a hike to a wonderful waterfall. It is approximately two miles and a half. About an hour round trip, but a must see location.
Traveling K — Google review
This was a nice surprise on our trip to Oahu. It was a little rainy the day I went and made it even prettier. Round trip was 1.95 miles and 900 feet elevation gain.

Fabulous hike. One of the lesser known places to hike in oahu but a true hidden gem. The water fall is truly spectacular and refreshing. To reach the water fall is the true reward of the trek

The Diamond Head Crater Trailhead is a must-visit for anyone exploring Honolulu. This iconic hiking destination, set within an extinct volcano, offers a 1.6-mile round trip journey that leads adventurers to stunning panoramic views of both the vibrant cityscape and the vast Pacific Ocean. While the trail can be moderately challenging due to its steep stairs and narrow tunnels, every step is worth it for the breathtaking lookout points along the way.
This was a really great hike! The path itself it’s not that bad until you reach the stairs to get to the top where the lookouts are located (there’s a lot of stairs, so be prepared!). I did not realize I had been inside the volcano crater all along until I reached the top of the hiking path, which I thought it was so amazing and it was incredible to see that the crater itself it’s huge. Be aware that the hiking path does get crowded and depending on the time of the day it can also get really hot. I would recommend doing this hike early in the morning as it would be cooler and probably less crowded. The views at the top are completely worth it. Bring lots of water!!!!!! Also get your tickets in advance as you will not be allowed to hike without it. It’s was easy to get tickets and they were only $5 per person, without paying for parking as I did not have a car. I did order them 30 days prior to coming here as they go really fast!
Claudia D — Google review
A must do trail while in Honolulu as the peak provides unmatched vista viewpoints you will not get anywhere else in Honolulu. This park has various rules that are fully enforced. The approach to the park is unique through a one-way traffic tunnel. The parking fee is included in the ticket and is $10 per vehicle, and entry in park is $5 per person. The trail is categorized as moderate and is more in the easier side. The trail starts off from the visitor center as a paved path, which converts into more rugged dusty trail. Still very easy to grip and walk on. At the end of the trail there are one set of stairs to go up, followed by a tunnel, and then two options are either 99 steep stair steps or a loop. The stairs end up at a spiral staircase which then leads out to vista point. There are still more steps to climb on the watch point. The round trip is probably two miles. The park has a lot of rules and restrictions. You can only buy a timed ticket in advance, and you must arrive within the first thirty minute of your timed zone or they will not allow you entry, please be careful they do turn back people. Similarly the park closes at 6 PM so they need you and your vehicle to be out of the park otherwise you will be locked in and only way out will be through a hefty fine and police involvement. The park rules are really strict and are strictly enforced so please follow the rules as listed on their website. There are public restrooms right behind the visitor center, along with two hydration stations.

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Hawaii! I loved this hike and everything about it. I brought my family, which consisted of two (2) children under 5. The walkway uphill is very kid-friendly and everyone along the trail was very supportive. There are numerous stopping points for breaks, pictures, etc. Once you reach the summit, it is very busy! There was a huge crowd when we reached the top and there was no room to move around. We got our pictures and made our way down. Some of the best pictures are along the hike. I recommend reserving a parking place in advance because when we left, there was no parking available and there was a line waiting to get in. Overall, we would do this again and this should definitely be on the to-do list for anyone!
Kristin M — Google review
Make sure to go online and book ahead $5. I chose the 4pm hike and definitely a great time to go as this hike is not shaded. I took the bus from Waikiki down, super easy bus ride. It’s kinda a long walk from the bus stop to the park but warms up the glutes and the views are spectacular. Once you enter you show your QR code. From top to bottom I finished in about an hour. Many lookout spots along the way and for me rest spots because I was out of breath. From the lighthouse to the endless ocean views it just never is enough. I would definitely do this again on my next visit to the islands. 🌺

Diamond Head Hike — short, iconic, and absolutely worth it. 🌋📸 If you’re in Honolulu and want that famous view — you know, the one with the full curve of Waikīkī and the ocean behind it — this is where you go. The hike itself? Not too hard. It’s about 2.5 miles round-trip (around 4 km) and takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on your pace and how long you stop to stare at the views (which you will do a lot). You’ll climb a bit, sweat a bit, maybe curse the last staircase — but it’s nothing crazy. I saw people of all ages doing it, and everyone seemed to enjoy it. Once you reach the top? Boom: postcard view. Panoramic lookouts over Honolulu, the Pacific Ocean, the crater walls — it’s one of the most photographed spots in all of Hawai‘i, and for a reason. 📸 Bring water, wear sneakers, and don’t forget your camera (or just your phone — trust me, you’ll want pics). This is one of those hikes that gives maximum reward with reasonable effort. Definitely recommend doing it early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat. And book your time slot in advance — it’s a popular one. — Ilya #CyborgRecommends #DiamondHeadHike #HonoluluViews #HawaiiTrails #BestViewInTown

Way too many people. Good views but the line to get to the views at the top takes a half hour. It's pretty rocky trail because basically this is a big lava rock. Pretty neat tunnels and some military lookouts and stairs. Near the top you have a choice of routes to complete the final segment: wind around or straight up via 99 stairs. My recommendation is to take the 99 stairs! It's not that bad and you will avoid a long line at the top. Plus, you will get to ascend a cool spiral staircase. Basically probably the most appealing part of this hike is to descend the spiral staircase that is part of the military installation at the top, appealing in part because there's almost nobody in there. Go at 6:00 a.m., Uber up there, and the temperature will probably be mild. Don't go in the middle of the day when it is scorching hot because there's not really much shade and the rock will radiate heat.
Tom J — Google review
The hike is actually easier than you'd think. My husband and I are pretty out of shape. My husband is also 69 years old with some back and hip issues. And we still made it to the top without being completely out of breath. Just go very slow and take breaks. You also need to make reservation and they let you make reservation a month in advance. Make reservation early because all the coveted earlier times will be gone quickly. I'd recommend getting the 6am or 7am spots. We got the 8am spot and it was already starting to get really warm midway and we wished we had started earlier. Bring lots of water, we brought 32oz of water between the 2 of us and we completely finished it at the end, so bring more if you can. Go to the bathroom by the visitor center, because that will be your last chance, there's no bathroom or port-a-potty on the trail. But even if you drink a lot of water, you'll sweat them all out, so I don't think you'd even need to worry about going to the bathroom. Also no trash can along the way, so expect to pack all your trash back down with you. It can be hard work but the view at the top is completely worth it.

Great hike! We did this hike as a family on a very sunny and hot day. I definitely recommend bringing plenty of water. The trail is of medium difficulty, but with enough breaks, even beginners can enjoy it. The view from the top is absolutely wonderful — well worth the effort. Highly recommended! 👍

The Mt. Olomana Trail (Three Peaks) in Kailua, Oahu is a challenging and thrilling hike for experienced adventurers. The trail begins in dense forest and steadily ascends with steep sections augmented with ropes, leading to the first peak at 1,644 feet. This hike is considered one of the hardest on the island and should only be attempted by well-prepared hikers due to extreme elevation changes, rope climbs, and sharp cliff drops.
Another hike i did before (2019). This hike is not for anyone and one of the dangerous hikes if you attempt to do all the last peak (The third peak). The first peak is moderate the second peak is hard and the last peak is extreme that means rope climbing your way down to the ground then straight incline up the rocks to the top. Usually hiker with no fear in heights or have rock climbing experience gets to hike the third peak that’s why majority of the hikers end there journey at the second peak but stopping there has the best view of the hike itself. Keep in mind there’s people injured or fall to their death while attempting to rope climb the last peak so don’t attempt if you’re not ready and don’t go over your limits there. Overall only hike it twice while I was stationed there and it was an experience to do all the three peaks and the breathtaking view of the leeward Oahu side. As of now, they put the sign of the history of hikers that died after the first peak so remember to think and plan before attempting to hike this trail. Bring water, sunscreen, bug repellent, and snacks.
Jerome A — Google review
Challenging but views are worth your sweats. 1. Be prepared and wear the right clothing for this hike. Bring water, don’t bring heavy bags, wear the right hiking shoes. 2. Expect muddy trails, sloppy trails, needs rock climbing skills and steep trails. 3. Start early morning and “Take your time” 4. First peak is doable. Second and third is definitely hard. 5. There are ropes that’ll help you but still take your time.
Khando K — Google review
I hiked to the 1st peak at sunrise on July 29, 2025. What a great view at the peak. I did quite some research before I went. Everything went well due to my research, so I like to share what I learned to all future 1st time visitors as you may also have many same questions that I had before I went. First, there is no parking at the actual trail head. It is actually inside a golf course. There are some road side parking spaces at a residence area about 0.8 miles away from the trail head. Search Three Peaks Trailhead in Google map then you will find the location. There is a narrow band of gravel walk path right next to the street. Make sure NOT to park on the gravel or even touch part of it. Park further on the grass. There are sign marked on the pole about this. As long as you follow the sign and warning carefully, you will be fine. From the parking spot you can walk along a driveway for 0.8 miles to the real trail head. There you will see the warning sign of how many hikers accidentally fell to death in the past 10 years. All happened between 2nd and 3rd peaks. I did see people hiked those two peaks in their youtube videos. They are mostly young couples who are obviously experienced in climbing. So I also do not recommend hiking beyond the 1st peak. In the end, the 1st peak is the highest and has the best view anyway. Regarding hiking to the 1st peak, it is not easy and part of it maybe even scary, but it is doable even for someone who is not very experienced in climbing. The requirement is that you need to be fit. If you can do 20 pushup without feeling terrible, I think you will be able to hike the 1st peak. When I did my research, nobody mentioned how hard it is to climb down on the way back. While I climbed up, I debated for a few minutes if I should turn around while I faced the last few vertical climb. I thought it could be much harder to climb down as I will not be able to see where to land my feet and hand at each step. It came out that is not an issue at all. Climbing down is much easier than climbing up. First, climbing up gained quite a lot of confidence. Second, after climbing up, I pretty much know the condition of the ropes, so I have much more confidence in using the rope to sustain part of my body weight so that I can almost pick any spot to land my feet. While climbing up, I do not recommend to rely on the rope as it is not maintained. I only used it as a backup in case I slip. The first time I drove to the trail It was raining hard at night so I passed and went to another location. The following day I went again. It also rained but not as hard. The trail was not too muddy and slippery, so it is not too bad. Still you definitely want to wear a good hiking shoes with great traction. Once I reached the 1st peak, the sun just came out of the cloud after sunrise. I had the full view to myself. It was really amazing. It took me about an hour to hike from the parking spot to the 1st peak in the dark.
Zhiyong W — Google review
Review of Peak One Hike Finding the trailhead was a bit tricky. If you're coming from Kailua, turn left at the traffic light, park nearby, and walk back toward the intersection. Just before the light, you'll notice a paved road on the right—follow it. You'll pass through the gate of a golf club and continue straight. Eventually, you'll see a sobering sign on the left noting recent fatalities on the trail. When I arrived, it was raining heavily. I wasn’t wearing hiking shoes—just regular ones with poor traction—and seriously considered turning back. Ultimately, I decided to go for it. The trail was wet, muddy, and slippery. By the end, my clothes and shoes were trashed, but the experience was absolutely worth it. Surprisingly, I didn’t slip once! The trail is manageable until the final stretch, where you’ll need to climb steep rocks. That last section is the most challenging—and the most rewarding. I hiked solo, and while it was tricky, I made it. The ascent took me about 1.5 hours, moving cautiously due to the rain and slick terrain. Tips for the Trail: - Be mindful of every step and think one move ahead. - Avoid stepping on tree roots or rocks—they’re often slippery. - Shift your balance quickly, lean forward, and watch your rear foot (it’s the one most likely to slip on the way up; going down, it’s the front foot). - Most slips happen when you feel safe—stay alert. - Watch out for sharp branches and rocks. - Wear a hat for protection. - I saw a few mosquitoes but didn’t get bitten (my skin reacts strongly, so I would’ve known). Packing Advice: - You don’t need to bring much. I hiked without water and was fine—just hydrate before you start. At the Summit: - There’s not much to do at the top besides soaking in the view, which is stunning. - Be extremely cautious—the final stretch is narrow, uneven, and can be windy.

Beautiful, yet challenging trail! I would recommend if you feel confident with your climbing skills, strength and endurance. Make your steps intentional and go slow, safety is more important than anything. Super steep, which is where rock climbing skills can be helpful to have (use the ropes and trees as well). This trail took almost 5 hours to complete all 3 peaks and get back to our car - so make sure you time yourself well!
Desaree C — Google review
It is fairly difficult. I went in running shoes and that is not advised. You need the grip of hiking shoes. Bring plenty of water and prepare to push yourself a bit. The last rip to the first peak is pretty frayed. Be extra careful using that one.
Michael G — Google review
Great but challenging hike. If you are looking for a hard hike then this is it. At the same time this might be the best hike you will ever do. Don’t trust the ropes too much.
Olesia P — Google review
I parked at Maunawii Park just to be safe as there were older locals taking their morning walk. It’s a mile walk through the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club to the start of the trail which is clearly marked. I started the hike at around 7am as there was brief rain at 6am that delayed my time. The trail up wasn’t muddy at all. From my parked car, it took me 80 minutes to reach the top at a moderate pace. Stopped at a view places to enjoy the view, record videos, and drink water. There’s plenty of ropes to navigate the cliffs. But overall, it wasn’t as scary as some describe it to be. Overall, most of the trail is at a moderate incline and then you have your brief periods where you are using hands and feet to climb up rocks. If you love nature and are looking physically active, then it’s one of the best places to feel the spirit of the island.

Koko Crater Arch Trail, also known as the Koko Crater Stairs or Nature's Stairmaster, is a challenging yet rewarding hike on the side of a former volcano. The trail follows an old tramway track that once transported military supplies to the summit. With 1,048 steps ascending 1,200 feet, it offers sweeping panoramas and a rigorous workout for hikers.
This is a must-do activity if you’re in the Honolulu area. It’s best to visit in the early morning, as the hike can be quite challenging during the day due to the sun and heat. Once you reach the top of the crater, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning view of Waikiki and its surroundings.

Make sure you have plenty of water, wear sunscreen and have a cap/hat for sun cover. There is no shade. Take your time, enjoy the different views. Knees sleeves are recommended if you have knee issues.

The Koko Crater Arch Trail is a hidden gem for those seeking a short but challenging hike with breathtaking views. The trail is relatively steep, with some rocky sections that require careful footing, but the payoff is worth it. The arch itself is stunning, and the panoramic views of the coastline and surrounding landscape are simply spectacular. Parking: The parking situation is manageable but can fill up quickly, especially during peak hours. Arriving early in the morning is recommended to secure a spot. Trail Details: The trail is not well-marked, so it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings and follow the path carefully. The incline is steep, and there are some narrow spots, so it’s not ideal for beginners or those with mobility issues. Experience: The hike to the arch and back can be done in about 1-2 hours, depending on your pace. The final approach to the arch involves some scrambling, but it’s a rewarding experience for those who enjoy a bit of adventure. Tips: Bring plenty of water, wear sturdy shoes, and be prepared for some sun exposure, as there is little shade along the way. The trail can be windy, so a light jacket might come in handy. Overall, Koko Crater Arch Trail offers a unique hiking experience with stunning views that make the effort worthwhile. If you’re up for a bit of a challenge and love scenic vistas, this trail is definitely worth checking out. It is also a pullover sightseeing.

I wanted to share a review of this awesome hike to warn people about its increasing difficulty. Hike from the road to the bottom of the arch is pretty easy. From the bottom of the arch to the underside of the arch is a scramble. Going over the top of the arch is tricky but doable. Coming back down the arch is what I want to warn you about. It’s steep with not a lot of room for error. One wrong step and you’re going on a trip. Please don’t climb over the arch unless you’re confident in your skills.
Adam C — Google review
A short hike to the arch with a stunning view for a sunrise capture spot. Come here to take my friends who aren’t really into hard hikes but it’s not long and it’s not hard. Just rock climbing a little to the top until you get to the last hill which is the arch itself. Some loose rock so be careful and wear proper shoes to hike there. If you wanna continue hiking, you can hike past the arch to the top of the mountain. You’ll be on a different trail (Koko Crater run trail) that’s connected to Koko stairs (hike left to the stairs) if you wanna be a marathon kind of person to hike all that (I’m one of them 😂). One of the hikes to check out if you’re visiting or been living here that never try it yet. Short and not hard.

Nestled in the heart of Oahu, the ʻAiea Loop Trailhead offers a scenic and leisurely 5-mile hiking loop through lush tropical vegetation, complete with pools and waterfalls. This trail is perfect for those seeking a more relaxed outdoor experience without delving deep into the mountains.
We spent a month on Oahu, did a lot of different things including hiking different trails. I can say for sure; the Aiea Loop Trail is one of the best trails I ever been to. It is so great we visited it 4 times within a month we’ve been in Oahu. The trail is 4.8 miles and will take you about 2 hours. I was wearing sandals all the time, but it might get muddy, so hiking shoes are nice to have. You will walk through different forests, including eucalyptus trees area and the smell just great. It’s very often raining there at least at some part of the trail, sometimes moderate rain, sometimes just drizzle. We never felt cold/wet due to sun. The scenery are great, there is no way to describe it. In addition, there is ALWAYS a RAINBOW somewhere on the trail. We were with kids (13 and 16 yo) and they did just fine. We saw a lot of people with younger kids, but not sure they did a full loop. Aiea Loop Trail is a really great way to spend 2 hours in the rainforest. Highly recommended!

The parking area doesn't open until 7:00 a.m. so make sure you take that into consideration when arriving. also, there's plenty of parking lots to choose from, even if you have to start on the bottom end of the trail. there's several bathrooms as well at the beginning that you can use. like others have said this trail can be pretty muddy even if it hasn't rained. so for those of you who want to be cute on the trails, leave all that clean gear at home because your lower half will definitely get muddy. in addition to being muddy, it's pretty slippery so you have to be very careful with your steps. The mud isn't ankle deep or anything like that but it's just a thin layer that makes things slick. so if you have good sold shoes and maybe some hiking poles, you'll be just fine. overall it isn't too difficult. I'd say it's just the medium just from a couple of the elevation changes and the slipperiness of the terrain there is several beautiful views of the Pearl harbor area and lots of wooded terrain as well. it might not have some of the best views like some of the other trails on the island. however, it's a decent workout and well traveled so safe. I saw people of all ages on the trail and all size dogs so this trail is truly for everyone

Its is a very nice trail, you can smell eucalyptus, it up and down, so many trees along the trail. It more than 5miles and two hours to hike.

Great trail just outside of Honolulu. Moderately steep in sections but overall not too strenuous. Parking was easy on a Saturday afternoon.

Great hike! Terrain was fine, but I imagine it would be very muddy if it rained. Be careful of roots on the ground as you walk, we witnessed someone take a hard trip/fall during our hike. Plenty of viewpoints and pretty things to see along the way! There are a fee benches at viewpoints as well. We parked at the 2nd lot and went clockwise. It was nice to pop out of the trail right at our car rather than having more uphill to hike to the 3rd lot!

The ‘Aiea Loop Trail is 4.8-mile trail that begins and ends in the park. This trail runs along the ridge on the west side of Halawa Valley and offers views of the southern coastline of O‘ahu from Pearl Harbor (Pu‘uloa) and the Wai‘anae Range to Honolulu and Diamond Head (Le‘ahi). We started at 8am and finished by 11 am due to many stops and pics. Along the way we picked lots of wild guavas. Plenty of shade. The highlight was at mid way we hit the lookout point where H3 was for a photo op! #Aiealopptrail🥾 #september192025

4.8 miles hike with great views! Recommend parking at the end of the trail and hiking up to the start point. Took us two hours with some stops for pictures and water.

Wonderful trail however not very easy as there were thick mud on trials that were slippery and should be taken slowly.

Hiking Trails
Ka'au Crater Trail is a challenging yet rewarding hike in Honolulu, offering stunning views of the city and the ocean. The trail takes you through a lush jungle, passing by three beautiful waterfalls, one of which you can climb. As you make your way up-stream, you'll encounter a hidden crater and eventually reach the ridgeline with breathtaking island vistas. This unique hike provides an opportunity to explore volcanic terrain while being just a short drive from Waikiki.
5/14/2025 wild trail! mud and rocks were very slippery, it was a wet day (rained for about 10 minutes just before i started). kind of treacherous climbing the trail beside the 3rd waterfall all the way back and around the crater. the side trail for waterfall #3 is a slick muddy surface. At one point, i spent 10 minutes trying to get up a few steps because i kept sliding back down. plenty of class 2 scrambling, and probably occasionally some class 3. there were a few extra difficult spots for me to climb up from the top of the 3rd waterfall until the summit (short lady). That part is also just mud. The ridge return after the crater was more moderate until it joins back up with the main trail. My legs got all scraped up, i was quite muddy, and very wet. I still wouldn’t choose to wear pants though. Countless stream crossings and ropes. Really is a ‘hard’ level trail, requires some route finding, cautious footing, upper and lower body strength, mental fortitude. It’s got all the typical riskiness of a Hawaiian hike and then a lot more. Saw 7 other people. took me 8h 15 min. Used 2.5L water and ran out about 5 minutes before the trailhead. Saw 1 boar.. it ran away.

Google maps leads you directly to the trailhead. There are probably 6 parking spots available. I only saw 4 other people on the trail on a Saturday, so parking wasn’t an issue. While this trail is not “maintained” I would like to thank the good stewards who have placed and provided upkeep on the ropes throughout the trail. You are the real heroes and make this hike more possible. Overall, this is your standard island hike with mud, ropes, and ridges. If you don’t hike or exercise strenuously at home, and come on vacation here thinking you can do this hike, I would advise against it. The first mile is SLOW as you are going through the rainforest, and having to be precise with your footing. After you get to the first waterfall, things start to pick up and the thrill of this hike begins. Shortly after is the second waterfall, then third. The third waterfall has many tiers you will have to climb. Once you get to the top of it, you are released onto the ridge and views of the crater. You continue to climb, and eventually peak before starting your journey around the crater and down. The way back is much faster as the trail appears to be more groomed as it is out of the rainforest. It took me a bit over 2.5 hours (moving time) to summit, but only 1.5 (moving time) to return to my vehicle. With breaks, close to 5 hours total. Why this is not on AllTrails I don’t know, but I’ve included a screenshot of a hike someone posted on there with a map of it in the past. You won’t need it. The trail is clearly marked and at no point did I ever feel lost. It says it was 5.7 miles, but my Garmin tracked it at 4.5. Additionally, at no point were things too sketch to where I had a thought of turning around. There is a moderate level of thrill the entire time, but not sketch. I would recommend 72oz of water via a Camelbak or backpack. You need all 4 of your limbs consistently for this hike, so don’t bother sacrificing one to carry a water bottle. There are also many opportunities on the way up for water filtration. I would not encourage bringing a small dog because the winds at the top of the ridge can scream, and potentially blow your dog down the mountain (again, not sketch, but precaution). Have fun!

I am moderately fit but come from a flat area at sea level. I love hiking but don't get to do it often. This was a hard hike. Took us 8+ hours to complete the whole crater - 10km. If you want to make it shorter I would recommend going right at the crater, going to the peak and then turning back around. That'll probably save you a kilometer especially bc I don't think the rest of the crater was that interesting. While being hard, it was also incredibly rewarding and fun. Three beautiful waterfalls plus you literally climb up the third one using ropes all long the edges. We had rope the whole way up at the end of August 2025. I had 1L of water on me and it was too little. Carry more than me. You also NEED hiking shoes or at least trail running shoes. I had my Hoka Speedgoats and was fine. I would consider gloves a necessity as well with all the ropes and rock climbing. It rained at the start of the day, trail was moist and slippery at several parts. Would I do it again? Absolutely. If you want to go and turn around at the first waterfall, it took us 2 hours to get there. Posted a video of it.

Wonderful hike! Some info based on my experience. The first viewpoint is about 3.5km in (~2 miles). The surroundings are beautiful but there are no views of the valley or crater on the way up. If you want to do a shorter version of the hike, there won't be any rewarding views, however, you will see a lot of beautiful plants and flowers. The first 1 mile is nice and slow and the trail is well marked (not very dangerous or hard). This part is mostly shaded. The second part is a bit more tricky (lots of climbing up), the third part is actually almost vertically climbing up a waterfall (there are ropes) and the last part is climbing up a mud trail again. The last parts are not really shaded so make sure to bring sun protection. The hike is quite difficult and dangerous. I went on a very dry day and I slipped and fell multiple times. If it is raining or if it has rained a lot before you want to do the hike, I would recommend not doing it. Climbing up the waterfall is not that easy and you really have to watch your steps. I can imagine if the rocks are wet, it will get very dangerous fast. Bring enough water, it is a super intense climb (I had 750ml, about 1/5th of a gallon and it was definitely not enough). Be safe our there and enjoy the views. The photo is taken from the ~2 mile mark (you can go a bit further) but I was happy with the view so decided to stop there.

Unbelievable.. breathtaking views! But boy-oh-boy is it a tough "hike." There's actually a lot of climbing involved, and you have to make sure you have on the right shoes.. hiking boots with a good gripping tread on the soles. Gloves would be useful as well for climbing ropes to pull yourself up over rocks and waterfalls. You will get muddy and wet. It is scary as heck when you get up really high on the waterfall, and there's nowhere to go but further up.. because there is no going back down! 😳 Be sure to bring plenty of water, and maybe some granola bars for snacks. It's going to be a long day. Oh.. and bug spray is a MUST!!! 🦟🦗🪲🐞🐜🦋🐛🦟🐌

There is difficult hiking and there there is Hawaii difficult. As soon as you enter the trail you’re facing giant boulders and river crossings. We planned on doing all 3 waterfalls plus the crater. Got to the second waterfall, went up via ropes but then halfway up we could not find more rope to climb. We tried without but the verticality of the trail and the mud just didn’t allow us to continue. The mud didn’t bother us as dirt but it did make things difficult and slow as we tried to not fall every few meters. What’s not great about the trail is that it doesn’t allow you to take in the scenery. You really have to stop and look around. While walking you really have to focus on your feet so you don’t make mistakes that could hurt you. I don’t recommend the hike to people who are not prepared with good shoes, lots of water, and don’t want to get dirty.

06/11/2025 This was a super challenging yet amazing hike! My mom and I hiked this trail together as our last day activity in Hawaii, and it was definitely a highlight! The trailhead is a little difficult to find, just look for the sign on the tree, and to park, you just have to find somewhere around the neighborhood. It rained pretty much the entire time we hiked, which made the trail a lot more difficult and muddy. It is unmaintained, which means that there will be a lot of bushwhacking through plants of all kinds, and you will most likely get extremely muddy. I would recommend to wear long pants, I wore some leggings that only covered half of my legs and I got really scratched up. At the third waterfall, there’s the option to either rope climb up the waterfall or go on a small, extremely unmaintained path next to it, which is the option that we chose. The trail that we chose is still extremely difficult, though! There was a lot of slipping and I almost fell down the trail at some point, but a log that was jutting out caught me in the small fall. The crater at the top is beautiful, and after seeing the crater, there is the option to either take the return trail back down the ridge, or go on the trail that will have you summit the peak and then hike the entire crater ridgeline. We personally chose to summit the peak and then hike the entire ridge, but I would only recommend that to extremely experienced hikers! Please be safe, it’s a very fun, but also very dangerous hike that people have to get rescued off of every month!! Bring lots of water and wear adequate shoes, even if it hasn’t rained, it will still be muddy! Overall, we hiked around 7.5 miles and it took us around 9 hours, so plan for all day if you’re doing the full thing!

Wiliwilinui Ridge Trail is a challenging 4.5-mile round-trip hike that takes you through koa and guava forests, offering stunning views of local beaches like Lanikai and Kailua. The trail features makeshift stairs built by previous hikers, making it accessible for less-experienced hikers as well.
Great hiking trail. Low key. In a gated neighborhood but if you tell them you're here for a hike, they'll give you a day pass. Not too crowded on the weekends, and good views from the top. Definitely don't go when it rains as the trail can get very slick.
David C — Google review
Well, it was not easy, but we'll worth it! Made it to the top and the 360 views of the island were incredible. A bit technical, but not bad for a medium experienced climber/hiker. Make sure you have really good traction (spikes or nubs) on your shoes. Yes, that's Diamond Head way down there at :07 in the video
JJ — Google review
This hike has some major potential but unfortunately it's pretty sketchy once you get to the top portion. Easy beginning and great views from the middle portion. Super steep up top, with some stairs and then ropes, but a few scary spots. We bailed right at the end, as some fog was rolling over and the footing was lacking. Any moisture and there would be absolutely no traction. Going up isn't too bad, coming down is pretty tricky and not for the faint of heart.
Andrew C — Google review
This challenging hike is hidden behind a gated community. But don't let that deter you from attempting. Parking is limited and controlled by a gate guard when you first enter the neighborhood, so go early to beat the crowds and also guarantee parking at the trailhead. As others have mentioned, if parking is full you could park outside the neighborhood and walk up. But that Hill is absolutely strenuous and you would want to save your energy for the hike. The trail starts off with a steady incline all the way to the actual entrance which is marked by a sign. At that point. It's basically stairs and muddy footholds all the way up. So prepared to get muddy and leave the cute shoes and outfits at home. You would want to carry your water in a backpack or Camelback so your hands are free. On some of the more difficult parts. There are plenty of ropes to get you up and they are all pretty sturdy. If you have gloves that would help. Once you get to the radio tower, it's a short walk to the final end of the trail where you will be rewarded with fuse the entire east side of Hawaii. You definitely don't want to go if it's been raining as the trail is definitely muddy and slippery already enough. And just when you thought going up was difficult the way down is even harder as you have to really be careful with your footing in order to not slip and hurt yourself. Take your time and if need be go down backwards, hands and foot. Just make sure you watch where you put your feet. Although it's a challenging hike, the reward at the top more than makes up for it. It can get crowded as the afternoon goes along so definitely recommend going as early as possible so that you can beat the crowd up and down. And also not have to worry about passing folks on the single muddy trail. On sunny days the trail is fully exposed to the Sun and elements, so make sure you wear sunscreen or long sleeves for my fair skinned friends and bring the lots of water. There was a lady that took her dog all the way to the top but you could tell that dog has been on a lot of trails. So if you're a pup does not used to hard strenuous hikes, definitely recommend leaving them at home.
Kent G — Google review
Not for beginners, says steady incline it was steep. Very steep. It was fun when I wasnt absolutely dying. Had to crawl on hands and knees at one point over a bunch of roots, once I got to the top of the root there were stair that were like 22 inches tall. Thought going down would be easier than going up but it was only faster, came down and almost popped my shocks and slid about a quarter the way down. Overall will be doing again 9/10.
Alexandria H — Google review
This trail is definitely not for beginners once you get to the second half. Absolutely stunning and worth it but it’s definitely for those who have been hiking before. Once you reach the “stairs” just know you’re in for a real treat.
Jason M — Google review
Great hiking experience. Medium difficulty with a steep finish though. Usually sufficient parking available, you will receive a parking permission for free when entering the gated community. If the six standard parking spaces are full, then just proceed to the forest street and park on the side. Bring sufficient water and a snack to enjoy the view on the peak. Good shoes are a must as the finish part can be quite slippery even in dry days.
Ni V — Google review
Lots of fun! It's a bit technical with ropes in a couple spots to help you up the steep areas. It isn't treacherous though. Bring plenty of water and recommend some Claws for drinking at the peak 😉. It's 5 miles round trip and took 5 hours with lots of breaks and summit hangout time.

Hiking Trails
Waimano Valley / Ridge Trail Head offers an adventurous and scenic hike with expansive views along the Mauumae Ridge Trail to Puu Lanipo. The well-worn and marked trail provides a medium difficulty level, with some short difficult sections. While not kid-friendly, it is easy to follow and leads to a picnic table lookout after about 90 minutes. The upper route showcases tunnels and beautiful summit views, but can be slippery in places, especially after rain.
Good loop with nice views. I would call this trail moderately easy. There is some up hill and walking over slippery rocks and roots (esp after rain) that for those with some uncertain footing might mean this trail is harder. The tunnels are fun to go through and help avoid a slightly narrow path. So be away that you have to duck going throug. Kids enjoy the tunnels though. Like any trail here bring plenty of water. Parking is in the dirt off the side of the street. Depending on the day it seems like it fills up quickly.
Elizabeth D — Google review
This trail can be taken either upwards or downwards. Unless you're heading to the summit, it's a continuous path, so either direction is fine. The trail itself is relatively easy, but it's often wet and slippery. Be cautious as falling can lead to injuries. From the midpoint that connects the upper and lower parts of the trail, it's 6 miles to the summit. However, even without reaching the summit, a 1-hour hike on this trail is still enjoyable.
Jinseung T — Google review
Did the upper to lower trail loop. Started with the upper where you get some great panoramic views of the valley. Lower was very muddy and a bit more challenging than the upper, but being next to the flowing water was nice. Overall it was a great hike (8 year old and two 10 year olds did just fine). Definitely recommend good hiking shoes, especially for the lower.
Derrick F — Google review
Great trail tucked away besides a hunting grounds with a security gate. Parking is on the street. Started at 730 right after the sun came up and finished at 0900. Went on the upper trail first which led to the lower trail and completed a full loop. Or you can start on the lower trail and finish with the upper! Only one or few people on the trail when I started. Saw multiple toddlers on the trail, so I’d say it’s kid friendly!
Tiona R — Google review
This is a well worn and marked trail, though I did not make it to the falls as the direction to them was not clearly laid out. I chose the upper route twice as shown in both photos, but ended up at the picnic table lookout after about 90 mins. And turned around then as I had no clear idea what or how much trail lay ahead. Not a bad hike or place to go, just not what I expected. The trail is mostly medium, but well laid out with a few difficult, but short sections. Parking is on the roadside.

Beautiful hike. I arrived at 6:30 am and I was the only person on the trail. Fairly easy, with two really cool, optional tunnels to go through. It took about an hour and twenty minutes to complete.
Veronica H — Google review
I had a blast on the trail. Did the upper trail first. Trail is well marked and easy to follow. I only found about 5 of the tunnels. 2 we're past the place you loop to the lower trail. Headed on to summit for a couple miles and was beautiful. Rained this morning and I am a klutz, so was slippery in a few places and turned around. Heading down toward lower trail was a little muddy but not bad at all. Overall a beautiful hike. Not panoramic view type of beautiful. Simple forested nature. Saw lots of parents with really small kids so must be kid friendly. Parking is easy. As you approach the guard shack, there is a dirt area on the left side of the road.

Moderate to hard lots of shades sun didn't bother me. Some spots are muddy so proper hiking shoes is a must. Koko Crater Stairs, also known as Koko Head Stairs, is a challenging hike on Oahu that offers stunning views of southeast Oahu. The trail consists of approximately 1,048 steep steps built into the hillside, ascending about 1,200 feet above the Hawaii Kai residential area and Hanauma Bay. This short but strenuous hike is often compared to Colorado's Manitou Incline due to its demanding nature.
Great hike! Would be lying to you if I didn't say it was very humbling. Took about 40 mins to get to the very top, with short breaks going up. The views at the top was amazing! Going down was much easier took about 15 mins, wasn't difficult but be weary of the steps so you don't twist an ankle.

What a workout!! We did this in about 2 hours round trip. Started at 730am and there weren’t too many people. Towards the stop there’s some steep stairs but there’s an option to use a side path instead. Had no issues parking in the car lot and there was a security watch for the vehicles.
Nicole B — Google review
The Koko Crater Stairs hike is a tough but absolutely rewarding challenge! With around 1,100 steep steps, it’s definitely not for the faint-hearted, but the breathtaking view over Honolulu from the top makes every drop of sweat worth it. There are no restrooms at the trailhead (at least we didn’t see any), and no ticket is required, which is great. Make sure to bring enough water — it gets hot and there’s no water fountain along the way. If you’re scared of heights, be cautious: there’s a short section that feels a bit unsafe, but you can take a small detour there. The trail is mostly exposed, so starting early in the morning is best to avoid the heat and crowds. Despite the intensity, it’s doable for anyone with average fitness and takes about an hour up and down. Overall, a challenging yet fun adventure that rewards you with one of the most fantastic panoramic views in all of Oahu — highly recommended!
Marco S — Google review
A beautiful hike with rewarding views at the top. The trail includes 1,048 stairs, so a decent level of stamina is needed, but it’s not too long, about an hour and a half round trip. It can get a bit crowded, so arriving early is recommended. Definitely worth the effort for the scenery!
Reza G — Google review
If you made it this far you get to enjoy the incredible views. But this hike is only halfway done. The way down is technical and with jello legs can be difficult. Don’t be fooled by anyone saying this is anything less than difficult. One of the harder hikes I’ve ever done. Enjoy the accomplishment and the views from the top!
B M — Google review
Very challenging, but the reward of the amazing views, the history of the bunkers at the top. WWII soldiers had one hell of a view up here, no doubt a scary situation. I give it an 11 out of 10

Hanauma Bay is a renowned snorkeling spot with diverse marine life and stunning underwater views. However, the Hanauma Bay Ridge Hike offers an equally impressive experience from above. This hike provides breathtaking vistas of the bay, surrounding towns, and distant mountains. Many visitors overlook the Hanauma Bay lookout, which offers panoramic views without the entrance fee. The bay itself features turquoise waters, a vast coral reef, and palm-fringed white sand beaches attracting numerous tourists.
Decided to try this hike in the late afternoon since it was an easier alternative to Koko Head and I was in the area. Late start but not a problem since I wanted to make sunset🤙 Parked at Koko Head District Park and walked up the hill, the entrance is directly in back of the bus stop. **Signage says its on Private Property no trespassing so be forewarned** This hike takes you around Hanauma Bay with virws of Koko Head Crater and Hawaii Kai. Paved road so its an easy hike (around 25 minutes) to the top by the radio towers. This hike is completely open to the elements so sunscreen, water and a nice hat is recommended. Decided to explore off the road and followed the trails down to the Hanauma Bay rim but stopped halfway since I knew I didnt have enough time. Some nice viewpoints and areas for whale watching if you take this route. Climbed back up the mountain and went to the end of the paved road to view the sunset. No green flash but it made the hike worthwhile. 5 stars🤙

Easy walk up to the cell towers and then a treat as you can head out onto the Martian landscape. Hike as far out as you want. I made it right down to the edge of the ocean. There is no shade bring water and a hat. If you head onto the hiking trail poles are recommended as the rock can be slippery in places.

A moderate hike because a two steep incline which include breathtaking views! Scenic vistas of the ocean on one side and the town on the other make it well worth the effort. Be sure to bring water, as there are no shaded areas. Also street parking available and no public restrooms.

This place is beautiful. The only thing to watch out for is the parking! Go early no matter your time. There are other beaches to check out in the area as well so don't be afraid to venture out a little... You don't have to hike the trail to get to the beach, you can catch a trolly for that.

gorgeous views. on the harder side of moderate. quite a bit is paved, but once you go off the paved part, it's pretty hard. I wouldn't do it if it had been rainy. you'll need to park down the street, the folks at the snorkel site will not let you park there.

looks like the "correct" entrance is to enter through Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, which is for the entire Hanauma Bay scenic area and costs $25 for non-locals and you may need to reserve ahead of time alternatively there is a path that starts near a sideroad but there is a “Government Property No Trespassing” sign near the entrance of that path. this looks like the entrance others take pictured: view of Hanauma Bay from Koko head

Lanikai Pillbox, also known as the Kaiwa Ridge Trail, is a popular hiking trail in Kailua offering stunning views of Kailua Bay and the Ko’olau Mountains. The trail is named after old World War II pillboxes that line the ridge overlooking Lanikai Beach and providing panoramic vistas of Mokulua islands and Oahu's windward side.
My husband said it will be an easy hike… it wasn’t LOL too steep for me. Not really for newbies. I would say it was a moderately challenging hike. Great views when you reach the top though!
Hazel C — Google review
Nice views on top! It can be steep though but not that bad. I’m pretty fit so it wasn’t much of a challenge but rather very fun. So if you’re fit, this trail will be fun for you.
Peter K — Google review
Fantastic! Beautiful views! Short hike but steep, took less than an hour to go to pillbox 2 and back down. This is a great trail if you don’t have a lot of time, but want to get good views. You can technically continue along the whole ridge but you can’t cut through the neighborhood to get back. The hike is pretty exposed so I’d recommend sun screen or hats if you burn quick Terrain wise it’s mostly rock and dirt, but if it rains it’s a muddy slip and slide. For footwear you’ll see everything from keiki in slippers to folks in hiking boots. People bring dogs that can handle the rocky portions and a few jumps up too at certain parts. No parking or restrooms nearby, don’t block the people who live there! Pack out what you bring in!
Brandon C — Google review
The Lanikai Pillbox Trail offers a fantastic experience with breathtaking views but starts off quite challenging. The first 20% of the hike is steep, slippery, and requires sure footing, especially after rain. After that, the path becomes much easier with only a few short steep sections. The hike can easily be completed in about 30 minutes, even with brief breaks. At the top, you’re rewarded with an incredible 360-degree view over Lanikai Beach, the ocean, and the Mokulua Islands. There are no restrooms or drinking water available. Parking is best found near the beach, about 500 meters from the trailhead.

short and fun hike, I should’ve read the reviews ahead to bring better shoes for those steep parts of the hike. The views during the entire hike were breathtaking !

This place is awesome!! Such a great hike and free. Bring water with you. There’s no parking there. You have to park about a block to two blocks down depending on how full the street is. You’re basically out in the sun as well. It’s a great experience.

Beautiful overlook at a historic military defense spot. The hike was well worn, be sure to wear shoes with good tread. My shoes were slippery and I fell a couple times despite being careful about slipping.

Lanikai Pillbox rewards every step with panoramic views of turquoise waters, white sand beaches, and the Mokulua Islands. The sunrise hike is legendary, and the photo ops are endless. A short climb with sky-high payoff, this spot captures the soul of Oʻahu’s natural beauty and adventure spirit. 😎

This is not your typical Botanical Garden. It's more like a drive, stop, and view overlook experience. The variety of plants is mind blowing. They have vegetation from all over the world. The Mountains and Foliage is lush and green. The park is free which is great. I would have been happy to pay a few bucks to support better signage and pedestrian pathways. It's definitely worth a visit.

What a beautiful and amazing place to drive through. They made it super accessible by car. This place is perfect for people that aren’t advanced hikers as nothing is too long and everything is very accessible. The beauty is captivating and super picturesque. You can be here for 30 minutes or you can spend 5 hours here. Bring the family or come on a date. You really cannot go wrong.

100% must do when you visit the island. I took the bus from Waikiki to the gardens. Not too bad of a bus ride and I highly recommend going early in the morning. After walking through a beautiful neighbored you arrive at the gates of the garden. Lush greenery with amazing mountain tops and oversized ancient trees. Breathtaking! Once you arrive to the visitor areas, you can view some fun facts and make your way to the lake. Another jaw dropping moment. Ducks, birds, the VIEW......... sit on the bench to take it all in. It's absolutely beautiful. I can't believe you pay nothing to enter. I would go back 100 times.

Opening hours are 9 am to 4 pm. This is free. This is a drive thru botanical garden with a great scenic view of the mountains. You can stop and walk there are parkings. We did not have the best weather but it is stunning. A must do.

Do not come last minute like we did. 40 min is not enough to enjoy this place. They have so many beautiful and unique plants I've never seen before! The area is huge, so there's a ton we missed out on! So come early and take your time enjoying it. If you drive to it, they start booting people with cars out at 3:45pm. Best part is that it's free!

The Ho'omaluhia Botanical Gardens is like a magical place from story books. Driving into it was jaw dropping. It felt like we were going to a tropical version of Rivendell, and there is so much to look at. I do recommend to dress comfortable with good water shoes. There is so much to look at and take in, this beauty is definitely from another world. Put this on your to do list.

Lyon Arboretum, nestled in the Manoa valley, is a 194-acre tropical rainforest showcasing over 5,000 exotic plants and singing birds. As part of the University of Hawai'i, it serves as a research facility and aims to preserve Hawaii's rare endemic species. The arboretum offers an extensive network of paths and trails totaling over seven miles for visitors to explore its lush surroundings. Founded in 1918 by Dr. Harold L.
as a landscape architect arboretum is my go to place. this is my first time visit, I was impressed and had such amazing experience to learned about native species of Hawaii and be able to encountered with some native parrots and cardinals. However, some plants are missing IDs, and some paths are missing trail directions which would be helpful for the visitors.

Beautiful place with wonderful views, however if you come during raining season prepare to bring ponchos/rainjackets as it can get pretty rainy at times (more than I was expecting). Also put on bug spray (they sell at the gift shop if you don’t have), it is absolutely a necessity as I got bitten pretty badly on my legs. If you are sensitive to bites, I would also recommend long sleeved clothing. Personally will not be returning due to my sensitivity to bites but definitely worth checking out once for some great nature sights.

An incredible experience! Stunning scenery complemented by a diverse array of indigenous plants. Truly nature at its finest! The staff were warm and welcoming, making the visit even more enjoyable. Highly recommend to anyone who appreciates the beauty of the natural world—definitely worth your time!
Rashmi K — Google review
If Waimea Valley feels like a well-curated garden of Hawaiian endemic plants, this place feels more like nature’s wild side—diverse, lush, and almost primitive. The trails are quieter, more private, and give you the sense that you’re walking closer to nature. Plus, catching glimpses of the mountain range from inside the valley was a nice surprise. But fair warning: the mosquitoes here are thriving! During our whole stay in Oahu, we barely saw any, but today they threw a party. I gave a donation at the visitor center, while my wife ended up giving a “blood donation” to the mosquitoes. 🦟😂
Dongjae K — Google review
This is the most beautiful park I’ve ever been to. If I lived closer and had the time I would go everyday. It is truly a gem. I couldn’t stop taking pictures of this place. There is a parking nearby and a hike to the falls. Originally, I went for the hike, but I preferred this botanical garden.

Absolutely fantastic area. This is such a magical place. Combine it with Manoa falls and you have an amazing day out. You need reservations, but go to the visitor center and you can probably get in anyway
Remi H — Google review
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to enjoy this garden very much. First, the signs throughout the park were very absent or hard to find. Based on the map, there should be a sign at every crossroad with the number and letter that matches the number and letter on the map, so that you know where you are at any given time. However, we barely found any signs at any of the intersections. So navigating through the park was very confusing. Second there were so many mosquitoes, so I would recommend using bug sprays before you enter.

Olomana is a stunning mountain range characterized by its three distinct peaks, each offering an exhilarating hiking experience that promises breathtaking views. This hike is not for the faint-hearted; it involves hand-over-hand scrambling and some tricky downclimbing, especially beyond the first peak. While the trek can be challenging—particularly after rain—experienced hikers will find it rewarding.
This is no joke hike, be prepared with some water, snacks and shoe with good grip. Don't rush and hurry especially after 1st peak. Most people can easily make to 1st peak after that it gets tricky. 3rd peak that is the killer. It might rain a little so just be prepared, things gets bad when it rains. It's great hike and awesome place to concur fear. Enjoy your time and view out there and please don't go alone.
Milan T — Google review
It was challenging after rain. We lost our way a few times. Park your car at bus stop. But come back before 6pm otherwise they will give you a ticket. Get enough snack and water pls. If you wanna go all three peaks, go early. There are colored sings on the trees, just in case if you lost your way follow them. Be careful when you go through woods. We touched bee net, and we were beaten by bees badly😞. The view is amazing on the top.
Ulziibayar B — Google review
This hike is offer so much! Do not miss it! The hike it's about three hours long (back-to-back). The first 3/4 segment of the trail is relatively easy, nothing extraordinarily. The last 1/4 is more challenging but I believe everyone can make it. The view from the top... oh my! I can't describe what is up there, you must check it out by yourself. Worth it. Trust me! (my girlfriend made it up in a short skirt... so c'mon guys!)

BEWARE OF THE 20 MINUTE WALK TO THE TRAIL. No parking near the trail and had to walk 20 minutes. If i had known that, woulda started it earlier and got out right before sunset. Also, make sure you bring a map. Trail easy to get lost on, on the way back down.
The C — Google review
Not a hike for those afraid of heights. There is some scrambling, and a beautiful journey for those inclined. Check the weather for rain in advance of attempting.
Avery B — Google review
wear lightweight running or tennis shoes and bring about 1.5L of water (or more if you want). the first peak is the tallest and has a great view. if you want to stop there, that's fine, but getting to the other two peaks isn't bad. you already did 90% of the work getting to the first peak. check out the others if you have time.
Fady C — Google review
Came for the 3 peaks this time. Great hike. The first time we just went to the 1st peak.
Eldon N — Google review
Rising 500 metres over the coastline, this chain of three jagged peaks is an integral part of the landscape on the windward side of Oahu. Olomana is a remnant of the Koʻolau caldera, the western section of which dominates the horizon towards Honolulu (see Nu’uanu Pali below). One look at Olomana and you’ll know that this is a hike not to be taken lightly, requiring a lot of scrambling and a stomach for heights. Ropes are provided to help you tackle the steeper ascents, but you’ll still need to pick your way up a few walls unaided. People have died or been seriously injured attempting the Three Peaks Trail, mostly between the second and third peaks, and it’s best to avoid these on particularly wet days. The trail is 4.4 miles long, but will feel much longer. Be sure to pause at the first peak where you’ll be rewarded with an awesome 360° panorama. Many hikers come this far and then return without attempting the steeper climbs further on.

Likeke Falls Trailhead is a popular and family-friendly hiking trail on Oahu, offering an easy trek to a beautiful waterfall. The trail can get muddy and slippery, so it's important to be cautious, especially during humid weather. Visitors can park for free lower down the hill or pay for parking at the church lot. It's essential to follow the beaten path and keep an eye out for a tree with a painted arrow to ensure you're on the right track towards the waterfall.
My family was able to do this relatively easily on a rainy day. Definitely muddy and can be slippery, but there were no issues for us. We all wore tennis shoes, 7 year old was able to easily keep up and wasn't even tired after. It was pretty "cool" temperatures bc it was a drizzly day in early December. We didn't meet a single other group or hiker on this trail. I definitely recommend this hike! Take your time, enjoy the mostly shaded trek. Follow arrow and go right behind the fallen tree. See my photos
Micah L — Google review
Once you get to the fallen tree make your immediate right there is a sign on the tree pointing you towards the trail for the water fall. If you continue straight down the same trail you'll end up following a trail up the mountainside that doesnt seem to go anywhere and can be dangerous coming back down the mud up there makes it pretty slippery. The hike was easy but it is muddy. My 6yo and I made the hike in crocs.
Michael P — Google review
The only reason we got lost was because of all the Google reviews making it seem like this was a confusing trail to follow. The trail is NOT hard to find, it literally is a big walking (construction driving) trail. The graffiti cylinder thing is no longer there so don't look for that. They are building a new one. But you do have to walk up a bit to see where that used to be located. Just follow the trail and don't overthink it. We ended up on the old pali hwy at first because all the reviews made it seem like we had to bush wack through the jungle. I wore flip flops and was just fine but my husband wore hiking shoes and said he was glad he did. Got a tiny bit slippery but we went at the beginning of Oct. Easy hike. Take bug spray. My daughter and I look like we have a major disease because of all the big bites we got.
Stacy M — Google review
Parking in Church lot is $15/ $10 w military ID. Trail head is top of parking lot, turnright at downed tree, Arrow is spray painted on tree. If you go left, you'll miss falls entirely.

Easy and beautiful hike ! My 4 years old son did it and was super happy. Nice waterfall at the end
Mathilde F — Google review
Easy jungle hike with a good waterfall. Wear Teva style water sandals so you can have traction in the slippery mud and the wet rocks. You can’t swim in the waterfall pool but you can wade in it. Great for little kids.
Nicole C — Google review
Not a trivial hike, but beautiful little fall, it was quite tiring for us, but worth it. Easy to miss the entrance of trail, we missed the first left turn, went behind the water silo, entered the jungle thinking that was the trail, but it sure wasn’t! TURN LEFT BEFORE THE WATER SILO, there is a red tape hanging from a tree.
Huseyin S — Google review
Nice short hike through the woods to a nice waterfall. Look for the fallen tree in the path. This is where you need to turn right. The fallen tree has two faded arrows that indicate the turn. There is also a green arrow painted on the giant tree beyond the fallen tree trunk. It’s easy to miss this turn. If you get to a T-intersection, you missed the turn and need go back down the trail.

Maunawili Falls is a captivating Oahu hike that leads to a stunning waterfall. The trail offers breathtaking views of the valley and immerses hikers in the lush jungle surroundings. While some find it challenging, especially after rain when the trail becomes muddy, others consider it an easy hike. It's recommended to wear proper footwear and be prepared for wet and muddy conditions. Despite its difficulty, many visitors find the experience well worth it, with some even describing it as a real jungle adventure.
Maunawili Falls is beautiful and serene. The private road to the falls is closed, but you can still use the public road. Make sure to bring lots of water and some snacks to keep your energy up. A walking stick would be helpful as well. Parking is also limited, so try to get there early. This was my favorite hike.

About a 1-2hr hike in depending on group ability, bring swim attire and sandals. Rocks are VERY slippery down in the swim/jump area and lots of potential places to hit your head BE CAREFUL. You will get towed if you park in the lookout more than 2 hrs, recommend rideshare from nearby unless youre a VERY fast hiker.
Weston I — Google review
While some have said this was an easy hike, perhaps they are regular hikers. It was just over three hours for us out and back, with about 15 min stop at the waterfall. Good footwear may be the trick to getting you in/out safely. Prepare for wet & mud, and beautiful jungle. Sore today, but well worth the time spent. It was the only thing on this Minnesota Mom's list and I loved it. Thanks to everyone for keeping it clean and taking trash back out. 🤙

A much more challenging hike than my family was expecting, so if you have small children please be prepared to do a lot of work keeping them safe. The trail isn't exactly dangerous, but it isn't well maintained in many areas and after the rain, the entire trail at the base of the hills become super muddy. This trail is beautiful in the fact that it's a true "jungle" trail.. It's literally carved out in the middle of nature without any car noise.. houses.. etc. It's awesome if you want to get outside and get to experience something in a beautiful natural state. The waterfall at the end is awesome too! Please be sure to not litter.. Keep noise pollution down and leash/clean up after your dogs.

Hiked to the falls with our two sons (6 and 9 years old). This hike it more strenuous and longer than we expected, but it was really fun. Just know it's going to take a good 4-5 hours to hike out, hang at the falls for a little, and hike back. My older son and I jumped from the lower part of the falls and that's a memory I'll never forget.

This hike was fantastic. A real hike. Not your nice path / tour. Definitely bring hiking boots no flip flops! It is muddy and slippery. It was a little challenging for me as a novis hiker. 3.6 miles round trip. 3 hours. With some time in the pool at the bottom of the falls.

Challenging hike, but worth it! Many tricky steps, a few river crossings, and steep stairs make this hike a bit challenging but not too bad if your a pretty able bodied person. The jungle views, the waterfall, and the refreshing swim make it all worth it!!

Waʻahila Ridge Trail is a challenging and adventurous hike on Oahu that offers stunning sunset views. The trail is rugged and not recommended for beginners, with steep uphills, downhills, and large rocks to climb. The lower Wa'ahila Ridge section of the trail is well-maintained and mostly shaded. Hikers will encounter mental challenges as they navigate through multiple rest spots and face a steep uphill towards the finish on the way back.
Great trail. About 5.5 miles round trip and took 4 hours. Less crowded than many of the others. The parking alone is amazing, plenty of stalls off the street with a bunch of picnic tables and restrooms as well. There's tons of strawberry guava along the way, and they're delicious! There are a lot of ups and downs over rocks and dirt hills, even in the beginning, but there's plenty of ropes to help. Nothing too challenging, theres just a lot, and it's a longer trail than the other ridge trails. But you get great views of the valley and diamondhead all the way to the airport all along the trail. At the top, you can keep walking along the koolau ridge.
Brandon D — Google review
Really good hike. Took us about 3ish hours round trip. Pretty quiet and straight forward trail. Views at the top are good and you can see most the island. Recommend if you’re fit and not too scared of heights. No real dangerous spots, good one to get into the harder hikes around the island. Definitely bring shoes with traction if you don’t wanna slip 1000 times.🤙🏼
Nate S — Google review
Awesome hike! The trail starts off mild but has a few steep inclines and declines that will require your hands for stability. Definitely an intermediate level hike. Beginners could do it too but expect to encounter steep sections that may force you to turn back. The best view is a look out 4/5ths the way to the end!
Darian Y — Google review
I went for a one hour hike (30 min out and 30 min back) today. The trail was mostly dry with few light muddy areas. I would rate this a medium difficulty as there is a lot of up and down on this trail and areas with rocks that you need to navigate. Hiking shoes is a must. There isn't too much shady areas so a hat and sunscreen are good as well. I only spotted one person during my hike. The parking lot had ample spaces when I arrived at 11:30am. The scenic views don't really start till at least 15-20 minutes into the hike.
Sam L — Google review
October hike, muddy. The trail is about 95% soil, 5% stones. I'd recommend proper hiking boots rather than trainers/sneakers if that's an option, for better grip, and a hiking pole also useful for the steep areas. Extensive views available. Toilets, bootwashing and picnic areas near the parking at the trailhead. Quite steep in parts, an enjoyable hike.
John B — Google review
This NOT a beginner trail. You will need shoes with good grip and a solid walking stick. An ankle brace as well if you’ve had a recent ankle injury. It’s a miracle I made it through the whole thing without twisting g my ankle as I almost did like 4 times. There were some spots too where you had to hold on to rope because it was both muddy and steep. Other than that it was a great trail. I drop it one star because there are no mile markers and I feel like it doesn’t warn how steep certain parts are.
Joseph B — Google review
One of my favorite hikes You get to scenic views very fast in about 10 minutes For me it’s very easy but it’s definitely not accessible for some people as you need to climb down rocks sometimes. But to get to scenic views it’s pretty simple

The Kolowalu Trail is a great option for hikers of all levels. The trail starts from a large parking lot and park, with beautiful views of the entrance. The trail is 4.1 kilometers long, with a mix of gentle and steep slopes. The trail is not technical enough to require ropes, but it does offer some challenging sections. The views from the trail are also incredible, with stunning views of Diamond Head to Honolulu International Airport.

Mauʻumae Ridge Trail, also known as Puʻu Lanipō, is a challenging yet incredibly scenic hike near Waikiki on Oahu. The trail offers expansive views of Waikiki, Diamond Head, and Palolo Valley within minutes of starting. The first two-thirds of the trail feature rolling ridges with breathtaking vistas, while the last portion is a muddy ascent to the summit.
Then end of the trail connected to another trail which you can see from the first photo. But the connect trail is pretty hard and not recommended for city girl or boy. You are walking on the cliff from both side. But the view is absolutely the best I ever seen!
Jinwei Y — Google review
This hike is a beast. Serious hikers only. Bring way more water than you think you'll need. Also, if you think you'll catch the sunset here like I did, know that it gets dark fast - bring a flashlight.
Jairus B — Google review
It was a moderately hard hike. The views were beautiful. The entrance and the sign isn't big or obvious. Look for what looks like a trail to someone's backyard.
Kris H — Google review
Great hike, like the other ridge hikes to the east but longer. Took right around 4 hours of moving time, longer with a couple of stops for pictures and to enjoy the views and breeze at the top. Some area with ropes that aren’t really necessary when it’s dry, would probably be needed in the wet. Some very overgrown areas where you have to watch your footing.
Mira S — Google review
Easy descent hike to the chair spot with no shelter from sun. Established but overgrown trail up & down the ridge with plenty of views of south shore landmarks on the way up to the summit. Need shoes, pants, sunscreen/hat, water & snacks. Helpful things include walking poles & gloves. Comparatively easier of the ridge hikes with only a few rope sections and gradual elevation climb, though a long trip. Great open & grassy summit spot with great views north, kinda blocked view looking towards Makapu’u. Make sure you save some energy for the last stretch after returning for the end of the hike rock climbing. 3hrs up then 2hr down, I took lots of breaks for 6 total.
Not S — Google review
Beautiful views just a short walk (5-10 minutes) from the street parking available. The trails can get quite muddy and slippery after a rainfall, but it's totally worth it. The beginning of the trail is within a residential neighbourhood, please be respectful of your surroundings.
Andrew C — Google review
I am fairly out of shape so this trail was grueling for me, but the peaceful environment and breathtaking views made it all worth while. Wear pants because this trail will wreak havoc on your shins. And wear shoes with good traction - even when there's no mud there are near-vertical climbs that require sturdy foot placement. Do NOT attempt to cross over westward from the summit towards Mount Olympus, as there are several perilous and treacherous cliffs disguised with tall grass and no braches to grab hold of, which had my heart pounding with fear (not in a fun way). We're talking one tumble in either directiob and you WILL fall to your death. Well worth the adventure overall, just be careful! Took me five hours roundtrip.

The first two thirds of this trail are a rolling ridge with spectacular views of Waikiki, diamond head and Pālolo Valley. The last third (or maybe it's half?) of this trail is a muddy ascent into the heavens. The summit is often beclouded, but if you go on a sunny, clear day the views of Waimanalo and Kailua are second only to the Stairway to Heaven. And this trail is legal to hike on.

The Makiki Valley Loop Trail is a short forest hike near Waikiki on Oahu, Hawaii. It's easily accessible and offers a relatively easy trek with about 1000ft of elevation gain. The trail takes hikers through lush greenery, with palms, vines-draped trees, and a small waterfall along the way. Just a few kilometers from the town center, this hidden oasis provides peaceful trails amidst verdant surroundings.
I’m pretty sure my hike was cut short due to some downed trees but I enjoyed nonetheless. The trail was relatively dry… a few slick parts but not too bad. Very tranquil, clean, and not too challenging

This was a great loop hike with a beautiful scenery. The trail features diverse terrain, including steps, rocks, and roots, making it a varied and interesting experience. We enjoyed great, dry conditions. The plant life is a major highlight. While there is a small area with a view of the ocean from the top, the trees cover most part of it making it difficult to see; however, it was a great hike and definitely recommend.

So this trail is a series of trails the main trail is a loop however, there are other trails to go off of it. Be mindful. It’s an easy trail. They advertise 2 1/2 hours, but it took me an hour and 15 minutes. Absolutely beautiful. Walk-through the jungle over a creek that runs through very nice. There’s a lot of people there people with pets people with small kids. It’s a well used trail but don’t kid yourself if you’re gonna get some good cardio in!

Beautiful hike through tropical jungle terrain. The trails here can be a little rough as they alternate between muddy and rocky. But with the right pair of shoes, this should be no problem for intermediate hikers. There are several free parking lots by the trailheads. Hiking here is beautiful. Lots of signs and maps throughout to keep you informed of where you are. You can reach a nice lookout that give you a great view of Honolulu and Oahu at large. Most of the trails are under the jungle canopy out of the sun and follow pretty streams with occasional waterfalls. The area is dog friendly.

A fairly easy hike with plenty of public parking. City buses drop you fairly close to the trailhead. There are restrooms and a drinking fountain at the trailhead. The trail is well maintained and follows a stream(if going clockwise). There are small waterfalls and pools even during the dry season. You’ll be greeted by native birds the deeper you hike into the forest. The total time with breaks should take you less than 3 hours at a leisurely pace. Wear good gripping shoes, bring repellent, hiking sticks(not necessary). Just be wary of exposed roots and wet(slippery/mossy)rocks. A couple of nice glimpses of Honolulu. Dog friendly(on a leash).

I was in Waikiki for 8 days and this was by far my favorite part of the whole trip. it may be a short distance but everywhere I looked was so stunningly beautiful...I stopped over and over again to take more pictures... to breathe, to do yoga, and to just listen to the surround sound of the wind, rain, and waterfalls. I spent several hours enjoying myself deep in the solace and beauty of forest, mountains, waterfalls. it was the most luscious three dimensional green I have ever experienced: walls made of leaves, floors coated with flowers, forests that soar to the sky. I worried that with it's close proximity to Waikiki Beach that this hike would be crowded with tourists seeking adventure and shade from the hot Hawaiian sun. not so. I went ten, fifteen minutes at a time between passing hikers and it never felt the least bit crowded or overrun with sightseers and selfie sticks. on the flip side, there were enough people hiking I never worried that I would be completely alone in the woods with an injury and no help to be found: there were enough hikers to feel confident on the cliff sides and mud that if I fell I would be rescued. (!!! there are some really steep sections of trail!!!!) I read lots of reviews about crowded tourists but realized afterward many of them were for the nearby Moana falls hike from Jurassic Park. I am assuming that hike is more crowded with tourists....also diamond head is a crowded hiking spot and requires reservations. I would not feel comfortable taking my three year old on this hike, the terrain is way too steep, slippery, rocky, and treacherous along the cliffs for a toddler. it is relatively short mileage wise but it is very steep incline and decline--- you essentially climb up one mountain, down into a valley by a waterfall, up another mountain and then follow the water down from the top of that second mountain. so I think the mileage makes the hike sound much easier and more accessible than it actually is. my older kids would be fine, happy, adaquately challenged by the terrain, so I would gladly bring my teenagers. I think 7 or 8 years old is about the youngest I would want to bring here. (with some hiking experience and stamina-- this is not a first hike if you ever want them to come hiking again) however. having said all that. the first trail from the parking lot is accessible for even the littles, it's even stroller or wheelchair friendly with a ramp and bridge to the first water fall. you could go 20 minutes up the trail and turn around. but I do not recommend attempting the entire loop with young preschool age children.

The Pali Puka hiking area is a fun and moderately challenging hike that starts from the Pali Lookout. The views of the windward side of Oahu are incredible, but be warned - the hike is an uphill slog with slippery tree roots and some steep drop-offs.
Did it in 2020 so past hike. A short steep hike to the top of the puka. Rated hard and the hike trail is next to the cliff but there’s a secondary trail on the left you can do to avoid the cliff. There’s rope that help you get up the trail and once you get to the end you’ll see a carved rock like a puka window showing the views of windward Oahu 🤙

Didn’t have time for the hike but the lookout views are amazing as well. This has a paid parking lot.

This was an awesome hiking experience. Only for people that don't mind heights and can walk on edges of the cliff with little to no fear. The cross winds are crazy, and the ledge was narrow in spots but worth it overall. There are two paths to get there, one on the edge while the other was a little off the edge. I will definitely do this again.

Amazing hike. Not too long but the elevation change more than makes up for it. The views at the end are an incredible reward for the effort and risk
Bee T — Google review
**DURATION: Slowly but surely! This hike is a pretty quick hike, about 20-35min (Start - PUKA) **DIFFICULTY: Easy-Moderate **PARKING: Free for locals. Honestly, I don't even know how they can tell who's car is local but just in case have something that is visible on your car to show you are truly local, something that doesn't reveal any sensitive information thou. Again, just in case, you may never know.. Notes: ~Word of warning takes your time on this hike as it is literally near the edge of death. Do not underestimate the winds because it is really strong up there. ~On some of the paths throughout this hike you can take a safer one which is through the brush/trees/bushes (it's a visible path) or the more adventurous but dangerous route (on the edge of the ridge (there lots of room to walk but just go with caution) **GEAR: Most of you! yes I mean you are probably wearing nonhiking shoes such as a Nike free run or some type of running shoes that have been worn out or has no grip at all. Honestly, that's perfectly fine because I use my Free Runs all the time for hikes! But as you may know, those shoes can easily cause you to slip especially on the dry dirt footpath, so make sure you have something to grip or hold on to going down/back especially. ~Gloves if you don't want to get your hands dirty, regular hospital or those types are ok. I was fortunate enough to have some in my car so it was easy for me to use my hand going back down using the backward crawling method. ~Water of course lol **TERRAIN: I don't recommend going when its very saturated and rainy.. the muddy terrain is not a safe and comfortable one to hike. Super dry days the dirt can get very slippery so just be always on your feet and be near something you can grab on too to be safe. ~Heights, literally zero tolerance! Your on the edge of the mountain any buffoonery while hiking could be deadly. So please be safe, and have fun.. just no fooling around. **PUKA STOP: So as the hike is called Pali Puka it could end there but as you can see when you're at the Puka the hike can continue on. It gets pretty steep as you go further. As you can see in my photo, which is the cover photo currently (As of July 9, 2017) that spot is actually past the puka and past the elevated/steep part after the Puka. Again go with caution and if you are going with people advise them that if they are going to the steeper (past the puka) hike that as they go up rock may become dislodged and the people below could be affected to just be careful. Anyways have fun! I recommend this hike, sometimes when I have time to kill going between windward or town side I just come to this hike and do it quickly. It's fun, quick and the views are one to be seen

Blocked as of 10/14/2023 Update: path is blocked, trail still accessible, park personell monitoring parking tickets didn't give a single bit and when I asked about it and said, yeah someone just went up. That being said, it is quite difficult and not for small children, or the faint of heart.

This hike is CLOSED to the public. We went anyway because all the reviews were excellent. Here's the deal though: this is a VERY steep and treacherous hike. Do not go if its wet/rainy or extremely windy. Don't go if you have literally any health problem. Maybe consider not going if you value your life. It's pretty dangerous and the chances of falling/slipping are high. This is definitely not appropriate for kids or older adults. The views are amazing, sure, but you can see mostly the same view from the overlook.

This is a must hike to spot fir anyone who wants a classic vacation photo. The hike is short but it will challenge you. There are many slick areas and anfew spots where other hikers generously placed ropes. The ropes are helpful in the really steep spots but make sure you test them before you trust the. Take care along the cliff edge and before long you will make it to the puka. Round trip can be accomplished in under an hour.

Pali Notches is a challenging yet rewarding hike in the Koolau Range of Oahu, offering breathtaking views of the island's windward side and the surrounding Koolaus. The trail includes two 18th-century man-made notches and continues along the ridge to The Chimney, a vertical wall leading to the highest peak in the range.
Did a couple of times at this hike but straight hard this hike. Requires rope climbing down and up the rocks and hiking the chimney part is advanced. There’s already someone died from attempting to climb the steep rope section of the hike which is the chimney so if you want to do that part it’s your risk. Other than that straight steep short hike but worth catching the sunset view of this nature. Had fun hiking with friends who owned a drone and capturing the video of us at this trail and the final result was stunning. Will visit this hike again with them since they be hiking their chimney more than anyone on this island.

This hike is super rugged and a little dangerous. The views are absolutely insane as a good chunk of the hike is on a ridge (I am not a geologist). If you are a super adventurous hiker I would highly recommend this hike. I believe there is also some rock climbing on this trail. I would recommend doing some research if you are interested in that.
Hudson H — Google review
Be careful, the trail up is treacherous as are the climbing sections. I wouldn't attempt if you aren't an experienced hiker/climber. Also be careful when trusting your life to a rope tied to a rusty old piece of rebar. If you have the skills (and it's dry) then go check it out, this is a simply incredible place to watch sunrise over Kailua!

Took us 7.5 hours to hike. Just a caution: do not park in the parking lot as you will be fined if you're only a trail user. Go on the side street instead. Weather was unpredictable. It started out as sunny/partly cloudy...6 hours in and rain started pouring. Definitely bring a rain coat. Plants were overgrown, so I also suggest wearing pants. The park also has a place to wash your shoes (it will get muddy depending on the weather) and has washrooms.

Wow what a beautiful tucked away Neighborhood park, I can see why they got strict about trespassers when closed. We did use it to access the hike, but if I lived in the neighborhood I’d bring my son there all the time!
Sioeli L — Google review
There used to be a bridge at the plsy structure and when it got damaged they took it off and boarded up the openings so now it's two small stand alone things. But it's usually pretty clean, not very crowded, and the people that go there tend to be pretty respectful of one another.
Nani C — Google review
I’ve been there many times either with children (I’m a nanny) or on my own. But today, I just went for another stroll on the trail and got back to have tickets on my car stating that the stalls are for park users only and they didn’t see anyone around. I walked maybe a mile in the trail; which I believe it’s part of the park. It started raining and I waited it out under the hala leaves. When I got back I had two tickets on my car! What a shame! I actually prevented 3 inexperienced kids (on their early twenties) from going up to the stairs because they were clearly clueless about their hiking abilities, the legality of it and trail conditions. And what I got was a ticket for parking at the park while enjoying it. Yes, because for me; and most people who use it, the trail is part of the park. The city should fine the people making money and taking over 10 people up to the stairs on a weekly basis! Not the island residents who are simply enjoying the state/city parks/trails resentfully.
Ma S — Google review
Unfortunately, me and 15 other people were using the park, also locals and we all got tickets on a Sunday 1:25pm parked at a park. How can you get a ticket parking at a park. Need to worry about the people that climb the haiku stairs and are not fined. This is a joke. Does not state only residents, no signs and your website states families for hiking and picnic. No aloha here. Should be ashamed. Lucky I dont live here. 😔

Ka'au Crater hike on Oahu is a challenging 4-5 hour adventure that includes waterfalls, rope climbing, and offers panoramic views. The trail can be quite muddy, especially after rain, making it essential to wear shoes that can withstand the conditions. The climb around the crater is particularly demanding due to the mud. Despite the challenges, hikers are rewarded with stunning views from the peak.
Spectacular views, very difficult hike. To make it up the third waterfall, you definitely need some upper body strength. Challenging but very rewarding!
Gwendolyn H — Google review
Difficult trail with many steep scrambles and rope climbs. The three waterfalls through the valley are beautiful but require some upper body strength to get up and down the steep ridges. Bring good shoes, plenty of water, sun protection for the Ridgeline if you circle the crater rim, and sturdy gloves and micro spikes if it has been raining. The mud gets pretty intense up there. The views are awesome and worth it! It's ideal after some heavy rains so you can see the waterfalls flowing. Do not go alone and have communication methods like multiple smart phones and backup navigation and light sources if you get lost or stay out past sunset. We were going slow and did the 6 mile loop in 7 hours ending around dusk.
Ron C — Google review
One of the muddiest hikes I've ever been on. We went up in the month of February - it rained and had rained. Doing the first three waterfalls is very doable. Climbing around the crater is more challenging, especially if there's a lot of mud. Bring shoes you don't mind throwing in the washer or completely hosing down. We had so much mud all on our bodies. Quite a few slips and even some falls. However, the views are wonderful being able to see both sides of the island from the peak. I'd also recommend perhaps bringing some gloves for all the ropes that you use to maneuver up and down the mountain. Definitely worth the effort and the mud - get out there and do it!
Caleb W — Google review
Very hard trail. Don’t go alone. Make sure you are physically prepared. Find at least one person who’s done it before. Long trail along the forest with beautiful waterfalls. Take water, snacks, sunscreen and wear hiking boots. Bring extra clothes and a towel if swimming at the waterfalls. Start the hike early in the day, so you will be back before the sunset. You don’t wanna be there in the dark.

A very challenging hike and so worth it. It took us almost 5 hours. I did it with my adult son and my two teenage kids. My youngest is 14. Alot of mud, stream crossings, and at the last climb to the top is steep and you have to bear crawl. I'm not an experienced hikers but I think I'm in fairly decent shape. The mud can be slippery and the terrain very uneven so you have to exert caution. The waterfalls are amazing! It was one of the best hikes I ever did. I think we will all be sore tomorrow. You are not too far from the city but you feel miles and miles away.
Elizabeth W — Google review
Fantastic hike! You're in for a treat, particularly with how accesible this type of terrain is! Took us around 3 hours in good conditions, though we are hiking fit. Beautiful setting following a stream with lush thick forrest. Points to note: It is very muddy even though we had the 'good conditions' There are 3 waterfalls that you will have to scale the side of. These are particularly steep and there are ropes that you will have to use a good part of the way. It is a loop track so you only have to worry about going up however this is certainly only reccomended for able boddied individuals.

Pearl Harbor National Memorial is a significant site that commemorates the 1941 Pearl Harbor attack. It includes the USS Arizona Memorial, a museum, and galleries. Managed by the National Park Service, it consists of five distinct destinations. The memorial not only tells the story of the devastating Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor but also covers other historical events such as wartime internment of Japanese Americans and World War II battles.
Rich in history, and gives you a strong sense of what the bombing of Pearl Harbor was like. Enjoyed the boat ride to see the Arizona. The movie at the theater was informative. Highly recommend getting the audio since it goes into more details. The staff were helpful and informative. Remember to bring a clear back pack otherwise, you will have to put your purse and backpack into a storage area. Bring a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated. Just snacks to purchase at the store.

We were there when there was two construction so it was not possible to get advanced tickets. We were able to get there early in the morning and get on the waiting list. Then I'm already outside is very moving. The memorial itself is actually US Navy property and the personnel are very military and expect respect and reverence. The historical visitor center information was interesting. We didn't pay for the guided out of your tour but didn't feel it we were missing anything. There are two other museums that are attached for an additional charge but the national park itself is free. We found the park rangers here to be exceptional and very well versed in their subject matter.

Hard not to tear up out here. So many families changed instantly. Eternal respect for all those who serve with honor. Heaven forbid those have to pay the same sacrifice! Word to the wise- don't see anywhere listed that the last boat out to the USS Arizona Memorial is at 330 pm (1530 hrs), though the Park is open until 5 pm. (1700 hrs) The Bowfin is quite an experience to walk through..These guys we're tasked with one of the ultimate risks of a wartime environment. Getting thru the bulkhead doors was something at 65 w two total hips....they ran through them when needed elsewhere in the Sub. Truly astounding. The museum for the submarine service is remarkable. Lots to learn there. Too much to see in one or two visits....we need to return. Reckon this place is a huge linchpin in United States history. Gettysburg, Lexington, and Pearl Harbor; all US citizens should be able to recite their importance in US history. Can I? Not completely, and it's shameful. Sure I learned some in 4th grade, and on. But these events are what our freedoms are founded on; what gave us and the world notice of our ability and intent following those events. We should all know them better.

If you’re planning a trip to Oahu, visiting the Pearl Harbor National Memorial is an absolute must. It’s one of those places that really makes history come alive, and best of all, entry is completely free. The memorial is beautifully maintained, and the exhibits do an incredible job of telling the story of Pearl Harbor and the events of World War II. It’s a powerful, moving experience that gives you a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made by so many. A few tips to make your visit smoother: if you’re driving, pay for parking because spots fill up fast, especially in the mornings. Speaking of mornings, I highly recommend arriving early—the lines for the USS Arizona Memorial ferry can get long. The ferry itself is free, and it’s a serene, respectful way to pay your respects at the Arizona. One important note: no bags are allowed on the ferry, so plan to leave them at home or securely in your car. Take your time walking through the exhibits and reading the plaques—there’s a lot of history packed into the memorial, and it’s really worth absorbing. Whether you’re a history buff or just curious about one of the most significant moments in American history, this visit is both educational and moving. Overall, the Pearl Harbor National Memorial is an unforgettable experience. It’s well-organized, meaningful, and a must-see if you’re on Oahu. Don’t miss it!

A Truly Humbling Experience, But Plan for the Costs This is an incredibly humbling and powerful place to visit. Standing there and reflecting on the history is a profound experience that every American should have. The main memorial itself is incredibly well done, respectful, and moving. My only real issue is how the pricing is structured. It's a bit messed up that you have to pay so much to see all the historic sites. It doesn't make sense why the main memorial is covered, but seeing everything else like the battleship and the other museums are pay to see. I think it was close to a hundred bucks a person to see everything, which feels unreasonable. Outside of the sticker shock for the full tour, the experience itself is absolutely not bad at all. It's a five-star piece of history, without a doubt. Just be prepared for the extra costs if you want to see more than the main memorial.

This is a large memorial that has various sections spread across the area, and involves a lot of walking. There are several attractions on site, all ticketed separately, or can be combined with one single passport pass. The only free attraction is the Arizona Memorial, for which you actually get on a free 5 minute boat ride, and get to spend 15 minutes at the site. The rest include various plaques, sculptures, memorial boards etc. All ticketing and experience details are listed and priced on the official website. Would highly recommend wearing easy to walk shoes, and bring a hat as most attractions are open air and it’s hot when sunny. There are restrooms located across various points. There is a gift shop and book store at the exit of the memorial. The virtual reality tours are really nice and very decently priced.
Avais S — Google review
A once in a lifetime experience. All that you read about visiting it is confusing. Go and just enjoy the Memorial and gain your own memories. The movie is a MUST see. The trip to the Arizona is a nice boat ride. You only need about 15 minutes on the Arizona Memorial its self. Enjoy the park wander and explore what is interesting to you. Take in what you can and don't feel like you have to do it all. If you have never been on a battleship or submarine experience it here otherwise there is plenty to explore. Nice gift shop lots of unique its specific to Pearl Harbor. I did a self guided tour was there for 3 hour and was happy with my visit. They sell snacks and drinks. Have adequate restrooms. DO NOTE WHAT TYPE OF BAG YOU TRY TO BRING IN. I had a clear see through bag with water and snacks and had no problem.
Shannon L — Google review
It’s definitely worth spending a few hours here remembering those who fell in WWII. The memorial comprises of 4 main “attractions”: the USS Arizona, USS Missouri, the US Bowfin Submarine and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. The USS Arizona is by far the most popular and iconic and this one is free but there are options to buy tickets so you don’t have to wait in line either through a private company like Viator or the government sponsored site recreation.gov. Cheaper to use recreation.gov but tickets are first come first served. If you missed reserving tickets for the Arizona, you can try your luck waiting as a stand by. It’s hit or miss but you have to go early (preferably arrive to line up before 7am). The other 3 sites you can either buy a combined passport or do a la cart. They have done a remarkable job preserving the history in a respectful way. Lots to see, not much by way of food on site or nearby. Public restrooms available. One thing to remember, no purses or bags are allowed unless they are see through.

Hanauma Bay is a popular nature preserve and marine life conservation district on Oahu. It offers a beautiful beach, opportunities to see green sea turtles and parrotfish, and excellent snorkeling. To avoid crowds and enjoy clear waters, consider arriving before 7am when entry may be free. The bay was previously harmed by human development but has been restored under new conservation procedures.
Beautiful beach with plenty of reef. Got snorkeling gear and was able to see so many varieties of fish even on a very windy day. Felt like we had a better snorkeling experience on left side of the beach. There’s a store where you can rent all the snorkeling equipment you need. Reservations highly recommended.

Beautiful nature preservation on Oahu. Amazing location for snorkeling! Extremely busy so you have book your registration spots online 2 days in advance or visit in person before 7am the day of just to have a chance at getting in! The earlier you get in, the longer you can stay as they close at 3pm. A must visit if you can get in!
Philip C — Google review
This was my first time snorkeling! Perfect place for it! You can rent or bring your own. There is so much to see undewater! The fish are unbelievable and not at all scared of you, but you have to be careful of where you step. Also, if you're coming to Hawaii for a short time & want yo bisit Maunalua Bay, make sure you visit the website at least 48 hours prior to book a reservation because it goes fast!! However it's absolutely worth seeing and the beach is gorgeous!!
Marta S — Google review
Pay USD25 for tickets to get in. We went with a 'tour' for around USD50 per pax, which included hotel pickup and snorkeling equipment included, and I also added USD10 for a life vest. We arrived the earliest at 6.45 am when the park opens, but the waters were sadly too cold and we decided to enjoy by relaxing on the beach instead. The tour ends at 11:00 More visitors came at around 10:30 when the sun was stronger and a little bit more pleasant. Recommend to come on your own (totally doable) and especially if your hotel already provides snorkelling gear and beach hotels etc for free (as ours did), so you can pick the best time and leave as you wish.
WM — Google review
Good and safe place for snorkeling. Reservations are in place, book early and on time. There is parking fee as well. Saw beautiful fishes but not much as in Shark’s cove. There is a shop to rent out snorkel gears, price ranges from 10-20$. The depth increases as you go away from the beach so it is not random.
Shashank P — Google review
We went there last year and it was truly a heavenly experience. It was quite a struggle to reserve a spot online a couple days in advance and we went there early in the morning (7 am) and waited in a long line of cars to get in. Everyone is directed to watch an educational video about preserving the wild life in the bay and safety. You can take trolley or walk down there (which is what we did) to meet a transcendent scene down the bay. The sand, the crescent hill surrounding the bay, the tranquil emerald/blue water and the blue sky put together a surreal scene that makes you remember this as the most beautiful place on Earth! Adding in the fish you see during snorkeling makes the experience even more vivid. There isn't much shade except for a handful of palm trees. Put ample amount of coral-safe sunscreen and multiple times if you want to be there for more than two hours. We all got sunburn despite the sunscreen we put on early in the morning, which probably got washed out as we stayed in the water. The burgers and fries in the park are pretty good and reasonably priced. The staff took good care of the visitors and managed the park very well. The beach closes at 2pm but you can stroll around on the top of the bay to take in more scenes. Definitely a must-go place if you are visiting Oahu.
Ling H — Google review
The view was breathtaking. Disappointed by the amount of fish we see while snorkeling, the best place to snorkel is in Sharks Cove. You have to book to get in at 7am 2 days ahead, parking is a bit of a nightmare. The clear water makes up for it. We went in the afternoon just hours before the beach closes and it was very crowded. We managed to take a few pictures of the water without people in it and it’s just heaven on earth.
Portia K — Google review
Bought tickets to snorkel here and had a blast. They brief you on what you can and can't do before you head down so just follow the rules. You can rent gear and equipment if you want. I would highly suggest getting snorkeling gear there is so much to see in the coral reef.

Kailua Beach Park is a beloved destination known for its clear waters, fine sand, and excellent facilities. The beach offers a wide arc of powdery sand alongside jewel-colored waters, making it perfect for leisurely walks and family outings. It's a hotspot for aquatic activities such as kitesurfing, windsurfing, swimming, and kayaking. The calm waters are ideal for various water sports year-round.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely stunning beach! Soft white sand, clear turquoise water, and breathtaking mountain views. Perfect for swimming, walking, or just relaxing under the sun. Family-friendly with calm waves and plenty of space. One of the best beaches in Hawaii!
Kim H — Google review
We visited Kailua Beach Park on a Wednesday afternoon. Even though it wasn’t a weekend or holiday, both parking lots were completely full. After driving around for a bit, we luckily found a spot near Buzz’s Original Steak House across the street. Parking here is definitely more challenging than some reviews suggest. The beach itself is gorgeous — super soft white sand and clear blue water. We even spotted a sea turtle! Honestly, while it’s beautiful, it didn’t completely blow me away compared to some other beaches in Oahu. The shallow bay and protection of Popoia Island provide calm waters, great if you have small children not used to the surfing waves of most beaches. Watching people kayaking and sailing turned out to be part of the fun. With the picnic grounds, public restrooms and showers the park is great for a full day outing. One of my favorite parts was the small stretch of rocky shoreline at the southeastern end of the beach, near the Lanikai Monument. It’s peaceful, picturesque, and perfect for photos. From there, you can enjoy sweeping views of Kailua Beach, the nearby Lanikai Beach, and the beautiful offshore islands, Moku Nui and Moku Iki.

absolutely breathtaking — one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever visited. The sand is soft and powdery, the water is a stunning turquoise, and the waves are gentle enough for swimming, kayaking, or just floating around. It feels less crowded and more relaxed compared to Waikīkī, making it perfect for families, couples, or anyone who just wants to enjoy Hawaii’s natural beauty in peace. The park itself is well-kept with plenty of space, shaded picnic areas, and facilities that make it easy to spend the whole day here. Kayaking out to the Mokulua Islands is a must if you’re up for an adventure, and the views from the shore are just as incredible. Highly recommend making this a stop on your Oahu trip!
Sami G — Google review
We enjoyed this park, we visited some other attractions in the area and it was a great place to spend the afternoon. Not a lot of natural shade but there are some trees down the beach. Sand is very soft, Caribbean type, great for walking around the bay, however, when the wind was picking up, the sand was all over the place. Great place for families with kids or older people, waves were fun without being dangerous. Facilities are outdated but working. We didn't see any lifesaving staff around. Close to restaurants and convenience stores.

🌊 5 stars – Absolutely Stunning Beach! This beach is an absolute paradise! The water is a breathtaking shade of turquoise — so clear and inviting. The soft white sand and gentle waves make it perfect for swimming and relaxing Free parking. Restrooms and outdoor showers are conveniently located just steps from the beach, which is a big help if you’re spending the whole day there. Another bonus — Buzz’s Steak House is right nearby! It’s the perfect spot to grab a delicious meal after a day in the sun. Whether you’re a local or visiting, this beach is a must-see. I’ll definitely be coming back!
Ekaterina K — Google review
Went Kayaking for the first time in my life out to the flat Island. Then ontoa secluded beach whose name escapes me. Our friends went to the Mokes. Pictures were few as we were in the water either kayaking or snorkeling. Worth the trip.
Elizabeth W — Google review
Great place to swim, walk the beach and enjoy the scenery. It is easy to find parking b/c there are so many parts to park at. Bathrooms and showers available. The pavilions are great for hosting parties.
Erica K — Google review
Wonderful soft sand feels great under your feet. The beach isn't very deep and is beginning to erode and expose the roots around the trees that outline the shoreline. When you wait into the water it drops off fairly quickly but then it's only up to your waist. There's not a lot here for waves as it is pretty well protected by the reef outside. Plenty of kite sailors here. It's fun watching their multicolored sails. Depending upon what time you get there will determine how much parking there is. Sometimes it's a little tough to find.

Tantalus Lookout, situated within Puu Ualakaa State Park just outside Honolulu, offers a less strenuous yet equally fulfilling experience for visitors. The lookout provides stunning panoramic views of the Diamond Head volcano cone and the Waikiki skyline, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely picnic against the backdrop of a picturesque sunset.
This place is absolutely magical and well worth the drive! The winding switchbacks on the way up and back and filled with all sorts of beautiful trees, plants, and flowering bushes. It's well maintained and there are mirrors on tight curves so you won't hit anyone. The lookout point has plenty of parking and is clean and well maintained as well. It's such a beautiful view of a good portion of the island, and we got to sit in the mist as well. We even saw wild pigs on our way out!
Athena S — Google review
This lookout is great! Takes a while to get there though. You have to drive up some winding roads on the cliff side. But eventually you get to a small parking lot with a nice lookout! May be a bit windy/chilly, but the view is fabulous! Great place to look out at town, diamond head, the airport, sand Island, and Pearl harbor!

The finest of experiences are always the unexpected ones. This is the last minute visit before our flight back to home next morning. Sometimes the best moments come from spontaneous decisions, and this was absolutely one of them. The drive up experience was great 👍 no traffic and easy. Roads were well maintained and clean. And while at the peak, the best sunset was offered right upon arrival - unplanned but unforgettable. One of the hidden gems and it's amazing to see the city and Diamond Head from another angle. 💯♥️🫶

Tantalus Lookout – A Last-Minute Detour Worth Every Turn Our visit to Tantalus Lookout wasn’t planned—but sometimes the best moments come from spontaneous decisions, and this was definitely one of them. The drive up to the lookout is an experience in itself. It’s a narrow, winding road that snakes through lush forest and climbs steadily up the mountain. Take it slow, be cautious, and don’t worry about the cars behind you—there’s no passing, and your only concern should be your safety and the people with you. Despite the tight curves, the drive is thrilling and beautiful, with sneak peeks of the view as you ascend. When we finally reached the top and parked, the view completely took us by surprise. Stretching out in front of us was a panoramic view of Honolulu, Diamond Head, and the Pacific Ocean, all the way from the east to the west. It was quiet, peaceful, and absolutely stunning. There was plenty of parking when we arrived, and the lookout area offered space to walk around and take in the scenery. Whether you’re into photography, sunsets, or just looking for a moment of calm above the city, this spot delivers. In short: • Unplanned but unforgettable • A careful drive, but worth every curve • Incredible views from mountain to sea • A must-see gem just outside the city If you’re in Oahu and want a break from the beach crowds, Tantalus Lookout is a perfect way to rise above it all—literally.

very winding road going up so be careful especially after sunset. i also got a flat tire going up which is unfortunate. views were amazing especially at sunset. you can see mountains diamond head the ocean and the city all in one

Beautiful stop with a stunning view of Diamond Head and the Pacific Ocean. Definitely worth the drive up. The road wasn’t too complicated, though a bit tight on some hairpin turns, but a midsize vehicle made it up just fine. There’s also a nice picnic area nearby, perfect for enjoying lunch while taking in the aloha surroundings.

When you want to see every shade of blue, come here. It’s stunning. I could have stayed there forever. Parking is close by, easy to get to, there’s a trail on the other side that goes up to the top of the ridge.

Wonderful, peaceful spot to visit the lookout or have a picnic. Plenty of parking in the main lot with an easy 3mins walk to the lookout or a small lot available at the lookout point. For wheelchair accessiblility at the lookout point, park at the small lookout lot. Otherwise the main lot offers wheelchair accessibility to the restrooms and the rest of the park with picnic tables and grassy shady areas. All places have fantastic views of Diamond Head.
